Weltweiter Erfolg von NUCLEAR

MH: Hallo NUCLEAR ! Ihr habt jetzt ganz frisch Euer Album „Murder Of Crows“ auf die Menschheit losgelassen. Es ist ein hartes, wütendes Album geworden, eine gnadenlose Abrechnung. Weltweit habt ihr bisher viele hervorragende Kritiken erhalten. Aufmerksamkeit ist Euch also garantiert und eure Botschaft wird gehört!

Matías (Vocals): Es ist eine Freude, wieder mit euch zu plaudern, zumindest virtuell. Wir haben immer noch frische Erinnerungen an das allererste Mal, als wir uns auf dem Rage Against Racism Festival in Duisburg trafen und miteinander sprachen. Vielen Dank für eure netten Worte zu unserer neuen Veröffentlichung, wir sind begeistert von der Resonanz, den vielen positiven Rückmeldungen in den Medien und – natürlich – von den Metalheads, die unsere Musik mögen. „Murder Of Crows“ repräsentiert die neue Realität von Nuclear, und die Musik spricht für sich selbst: wütend, schwer und roh.

Ideen und Gefühle über die Entstehung von „Murder Of Crows“

MH: Die Entstehung eines jeden Albums oder Songs ist immer etwas Besonderes. Es basiert auf bestimmten Umständen und Stimmungen und spiegelt oft die persönlichen Gefühle eines Musikers wider.

Unter welchen Bedingungen ist Ihr Album „Murder Of Crows“ entstanden?

Francisco (Guitars): „Murder Of Crows“ ist aus der Idee heraus entstanden, wieder bei Null anzufangen. Wir hatten in der Vergangenheit viel gearbeitet, um eine Art Stabilität zu erlangen und ein Haus zu haben, dem wir vertrauen und auf das wir uns mit unserer Musik verlassen konnten. Plötzlich war dieses Haus weg und wir mussten wieder bei Null anfangen. Wir arbeiteten als Freunde und mit absolut keinen musikalischen Grenzen, wir hatten niemanden, der nach dem neuen Material fragte oder uns eine Deadline für die Lieferung setzte. Wir haben uns viel Zeit gelassen, aber ich denke, das war es definitiv wert. Sobald wir mit der Arbeit begonnen hatten, ging es einfach weiter und das Ergebnis, 3 Jahre später, kann als einer der Höhepunkte der Band angesehen werden.

MH: With which idea or which song did the creation of the album start?

Francisco (Guitars): Der erste Song, den wir für das Album geschrieben haben, war „Hatetrend“. Es war eine Art Fortsetzung von „Formula For Anarchy“ (vielleicht ein bisschen wütender), aber trotzdem der erste, aber erst als wir mit „No light After All“ aufkamen, begannen wir wirklich mit der Arbeit an „Murder Of Crows“. Dieser Song fühlte sich richtig an, fühlte sich neu und frisch an, wir fühlten uns wirklich wohl dabei, ihn zu spielen, also würde ich sagen, das war der eigentliche Startschuss für das Album.

Veränderungen für NUCLEAR

MH: Sind es immer noch die gleichen Umstände, die Euch auf den letzten Alben begleitet haben?

Francisco (Guitars): Nein, sind sie nicht. Die früheren Alben wurden unter anderen Szenarien und Stimmungen geschrieben. Wir lebten damals in einer anderen Zeit. „Murder Of Crows“ hat uns individuell in einer schlechten Verfassung erwischt (ich kann zumindest für mich sprechen) und deshalb ist es wahrscheinlich so wütend. Wir haben nie über das Ergebnis nachgedacht – wir sind einfach den Weg gegangen. Vielleicht gaben diese anderen Umstände dem Album den nötigen Funken, wer weiß.

NUCLEAR – Die Abrechnung

MH: Mit was oder wem rechnet Ihr ab? (Vielleicht wissen viele Leute nicht, wie die aktuelle Situation in CHILE ist? Könnten Sie also aus Ihrer Sicht kurz zusammenfassen, worum es geht und wo die Probleme liegen).

Francisco (Guitars): Chile hat sich verändert. Chile war vor dem Oktober 2019 ein Land und danach ein ganz anderes. Wir haben erkannt, dass es über die Jahre zu viel Mist und Missbrauch gegeben hat und das muss gestoppt werden. Es ist schwierig, mit dem Finger auf jemanden zu zeigen, es war eine Summe von vielen Dingen, die über die Jahre den Bach runtergegangen sind. Die Politiker sind die ersten, die schuld sind. Ihr Egoismus und ihre Arroganz haben das Land in die Abwärtsspirale geführt, die wir heute sehen. Fehlende Gesundheitsversorgung, niedrige Gehälter, die extrem hohen Lebenshaltungskosten, es ist fast unmöglich, es hier zu schaffen, aber unsere Politiker werden sagen, dass alles großartig ist und Chile das stabilste, produktivste und nachhaltigste Land in Südamerika ist. Leider ist das nur eine weitere schwachsinnige Ausrede, um weiter die Fäden zu ziehen.

NUCLEARs Botschaft für das Volk

MH: Warum haben Sie den Song „Abusados“ auf Spanisch geschrieben?

Francisco (Guitars): Weil es dem chilenischen Volk gewidmet war und wir wollten, dass alle die Texte verstehen.

Die Umstände von „Murder Of Crows“

MH: Die politische Situation in Chile ist alles andere als entspannt und die sozialen Missstände sind allgegenwärtig. Bitte erzählen Sie uns etwas darüber! Habt ihr persönlich oder als Band jemals Schwierigkeiten mit dem System gehabt?

Matías (Vocals): Es sind in der Tat harte Zeiten. Politisch und gesellschaftlich gesehen. Seit letztem Jahr durchläuft Chile eine der schlimmsten Krisen seit dem Ende der Militärdiktatur in den späten 80er Jahren. Letztes Jahr waren Millionen von Menschen in ganz Chile auf der Straße, um gegen jahrzehntelangen Missbrauch, Ungleichheit und Korruption zu protestieren. Harte Tage, brutale Repression gegen Demonstranten, Verletzte, von der Bereitschaftspolizei verstümmelte Menschen, einige Tote und das ganze Land schien wie eine große Bombe kurz vor der Explosion.

Danach hatten wir es mit einer der schlimmsten Pandemien in unserer Geschichte zu tun. Hohe Ansteckungsraten, viele Tote, Ausgangssperre, Quarantäne, Arbeitslosigkeit, die Wirtschaft in einer Abwärtsspirale. Ich weiß nicht, ob es positiv oder korrekt ist, „Inspiration“ zu sagen, aber all diese Situationen schufen eine Atmosphäre voller Gewalt und Wut, auch eine dunkle Mischung aus Traurigkeit und Verzweiflung. Das war die Umgebung von „Murder Of Crows“.

Das kranke System

Matías (Vocals): Um es gleich auf den Punkt zu bringen, was Deine Fragen betrifft: Als Einwohner Chiles hatten, haben und werden wir immer Probleme mit dem ungerechten System haben, in dem wir leben. Der „chilenische demokratische Weg“ bedeutet Ungleichheit, Missbrauch durch Konzerne, politische Korruption und wirtschaftlichen Raubbau. Alles in unserem Land wurde an multinationale Konzerne verkauft, sogar das Wasser. Können Sie das glauben? Das Wasser! Es ist erschreckend. Niedrige Löhne, ein völlig zusammengebrochenes öffentliches Gesundheitssystem, miserable Renten für ältere Menschen, Geschäfte und schmutziger Profit im Bildungswesen, Politiker, die sich wie Lobbyisten für das Großkapital verhalten, Polizeibrutalität, um nur ein paar Dinge zu nennen. Das ist Chile im 21. Jahrhundert. Und es ist traurig, denn wer will schon in die Zukunft denken, wenn die eigene Gegenwart so deprimierend, so negativ ist?

Wir sind keine politischen Aktivisten, aber als Bürger haben wir unsere Standpunkte, und wir versuchen, diese Gedanken in unserer Musik zu repräsentieren. Und anderen Leuten, die vielleicht nicht wissen, wie die Dinge auf dieser Seite der Welt laufen, etwas von unserer eigenen Realität zu zeigen. Und das ist es, was Musik für uns bedeutet: ein Ausdruck von Brutalität in wirklich harten Zeiten, das Leben ist nicht einfach in Südamerika, und die letzten zwei Jahre waren auch für Chilenen sehr schwierig.

Metal-Szene in Chile

MH: Lass uns ein bisschen über die Metal-Szene in Chile sprechen. Ihr macht jetzt schon seit einigen Jahren Musik und ich denke, ihr habt eine Menge durchgemacht. Wie steht es um die chilenische Metal-Szene? Unterschiede von damals zu heute?

Seba (Guitars):  Für mich macht es keinen Sinn, die frühen Jahre mit der heutigen Situation zu vergleichen, weil sich alles drastisch verändert hat. Internet und Kommunikation haben die Art und Weise, wie Menschen sozial interagieren, neu gestaltet. Es ist wirklich schwer, Leute zu finden, die wie früher Alben, Kassetten oder Fanzines austauschen. Heutzutage haben Spotify oder YouTube diese Treffpunkte ersetzt, aber ich denke, es ist auch cool, weil mehr Menschen Zugang zur Musik haben.

In Chile sind viele Leute Metal-Fans, große Konzerte sind gut besucht, aber ehrlich gesagt glaube ich nicht, dass wir eine Metal-Szene haben, oder vielleicht ist es heutzutage anders als früher… Wir haben Bands, aber wir haben keine starke Bewegung rund um Metal und das Genre ist immer noch eine Art Subkultur für die meisten Leute. Metal-Musik ist weit weg von den Kulturmedien und wir haben keine spezialisierten Medien, professionelle Medien rund um Metal zum Beispiel. Es ist hier immer noch eine Art Underground-Sache.

Die Kindheit

MH: Gehen wir weiter zurück in der Zeit. Welches Erlebnis kommt Euch spontan in den Sinn, wenn Ihr Euch an Eure Kindheit und Jugend erinnert?

Punto (Drums): Ich habe sehr gute Erinnerungen an die Zeit, als ich ein Kind war und ich begann, viele Dinge wie Musik kennenzulernen. Es fällt mir ein, als ich 11 Jahre alt war und bereits Bands wie IRON MAIDEN und METALLICA hörte, aber als ich SEPULTURA oder SLAYER hörte, war das eine neue Welt.

Es war das Jahr 1992 und in unserer Stadt gab es einen Laden, der Metal brachte und wir konnten die extremste neue Welle des Stils entdecken: Death Metal und entdeckten Bands wie MORBID ANGEL, DEATH, OBITUARY, ENTOMBED, DISMEMBER, NAPALM DEATH und andere. Diese Jahre halfen mir, Bands und Leute zu treffen, denen es genauso ging wie mir, und mehr Kontakte mit Leuten innerhalb und außerhalb von Arica (meiner Heimatstadt) zu knüpfen. Schließlich gefiel uns die Idee, Musik zu machen und zwar mit Freunden, die wir in der Schule hatten und die von unseren Lieblingsbands beeinflusst wurden. Daraus entstand die Idee, eine Band zu gründen, und sie hat bis heute nicht aufgehört.

Punto´s Familie

MH: Habt Ihr Kinder?

Punto (Drums): Ja, sein Name ist NUCLEAR, hahaha. Nein, habe ich nicht. Ich persönlich habe als Kind beschlossen, keine Kinder zu haben, weil ich immer eine Band haben wollte und das war mein Projekt des ganzen Lebens.

Erinnerungen an die ersten Songs

MH: Wer oder was hat damals und im weiteren Verlauf Ihr Interesse für Musik, speziell für Metal-Musik, geweckt?

Matias (Vocals): Meine älteste Erinnerung ist, dass ich als Kind zum allerersten Mal AC/DC hörte. Ich glaube, ich war vielleicht acht Jahre alt und hörte mir „Who Made Who“ auf einem lokalen Radiosender an. Es war etwas Gewaltiges, die Gitarren, Brian Johnsons Stimme, das Schlagzeug. Unbeschreiblich. Danach habe ich immer wieder meine Mutter gebeten, mir „Who Made Who“ zu schenken. Und so war es dann auch. Danach begann die Suche nach härterer Musik wie Thrash oder Death Metal und hörte nie wieder auf. Mit den Jungs lieben wir es, neue Musik zu hören, bei jeder Probe empfiehlt jemand eine neue Band, ein Album, eine Single, was auch immer. Ich denke, man kann immer von der Musik, ihrer Vielseitigkeit oder ihrer Abwechslung überrascht werden. Und das ist großartig, denn sie ist ein Universum in ständiger Expansion.

MH: Was haben Eure Eltern von dieser Idee gehalten, als Ihr Euch für Metal-Musik entschieden habt und eine Band gründen wolltet?

Seba (Guitars): Zu Hause hatten wir immer eine gute Beziehung zwischen Musik und Kunst. Auch meine Brüder haben sich in künstlerische Berufe hineinentwickelt. Dann entschied ich mich, Tontechnik zu studieren und mich voll und ganz der Musik zu widmen, als Musikproduzent und Musiker. Ich denke, das war für meine Familie nicht ungewöhnlich. Mit Francisco und Punto haben wir die Band gegründet, als wir noch Schulkameraden waren, sehr jung. Eigentlich denke ich, dass meine Familie mehr Angst vor den Plattencovern hatte, die wir damals ausgetauscht und gehört haben, hahahaha.

Weihnachten steht vor der Tür

MH: Weihnachten steht bald vor der Tür. Was denkt Ihr dieses Jahr darüber? Wie wird Weihnachten in Chile gefeiert?

Matías (Vocals): Es wird dieses Jahr eine ganz andere Weihnachtszeit sein. Wir sind immer noch unter Pandemie und alle Arten von Einschränkungen. Ich weiß nicht, ob es so sein wird wie in den anderen Jahren, aber ich persönlich werde eine Art intime Feier mit meiner Frau und meinem Sohn haben, ein paar Platten auflegen und ein paar Biere trinken. Um Deine Frage zu beantworten, in Chile wird Weihnachten sehr groß gefeiert, überall gibt es viele Grillfeste und Familientreffen. Der Unterschied zu Deutschland ist, dass wir im Sommer sind und man sich die ganzen langbärtigen Weihnachtsmann-Kostümtypen vorstellen kann, die in ihren Anzügen bei 32° Grad kochen, kein Schnee, keine Rehe und keine Elfen.

Der Affenschwanz

MH: Was sagt Euch der „Affenschwanz“ ( „Cola de Mono“)? Gibt es eine Geschichte dazu?

Matías (Vocals): Ja, „Cola de Mono“ das höllische Getränk. Man beachte: Milch, 50-prozentiger Alkohol namens „Aguardiente“, Kaffee und Zucker. Alles gemischt in einem Glas oder einer Flasche und serviert mit irgendeiner Art von süßem Brot. Milch mit Alkohol? Verdammt! Ich kann nach meinem Trinkversuch nicht empfehlen, davon einen Kater zu riskieren. Für mich war es eine Nahtoderfahrung, buchstäblich gesprochen hahahaha.

Ich erinnere mich noch an diese Nacht: Wir hörten mit meinem damals besten Freund einige Alben von Metal-Bands, wir waren Teenager, hatten nicht viel Geld in der Tasche. Die einzige Möglichkeit, das zu lösen, war, eine Flasche „Cola de Mono“ aus dem Kühlschrank der Oma meines Freundes zu nehmen. Falsche Entscheidung. Die ältere Frau pflegte das Getränk mit hochprozentigem Aguardiente in der Mischung zu „verbessern“. Das Endergebnis war katastrophal, wir waren buchstäblich in wenigen Minuten betrunken und es war einer der schlimmsten Kater, an die ich mich erinnern kann, hahahaha, wir fühlten uns den ganzen Tag danach wie gerädert. Sommer, Kater, Milch mit Alkohol. Eine schlechte Entscheidung, absolut!

NUCLEAR beim Rage Against Racism 2019

MH: Welche Erinnerungen habt Ihr noch an das Rage Against Racism Festival 2019?

Francisco (Guitars): Die Besten, und das sage ich nicht nur so. Wir hatten wirklich einen Riesenspaß an diesem Tag. Es war ein Samstag und wir kamen von einem anderen Festival. Seit wir am Morgen ankamen, funktionierte alles perfekt: die Leute, die Crew, die Stimmung, das Essen, die Getränke, alles war an seinem Platz. Es fühlte sich wie zu Hause an und wir genossen jede Sekunde. Es war wie eine große Metal-Familie, wo alle für das gleiche Ziel arbeiteten, und wir wären an diesem Abend gerne noch länger auf der Afterparty geblieben, aber wir hatten am nächsten Tag eine Show in London, also mussten wir gehen.

Wir unterhalten uns oft untereinander und erinnern uns an RAR. Wir haben das Bedürfnis, eines Tages zurückzukommen und alles noch einmal zu erleben. RAR war eines dieser Dinge im Leben, die für immer hängen bleiben, denke ich. Nochmals vielen Dank, dass wir ein Teil davon sein durften.

Letzte Worte von NUCLEAR zu „Raise your horns“

MH: Was denkt Ihr über die folgenden Bilder? Kommt Euch irgendwas bekannt vor?

Matías (Vocals): Hahahaha, ist vielleicht nicht das Gleiche, aber erinnert mich an die letzten Minuten, bevor wir Rage Against Racism auf dem Weg zum Hotel verließen. Biere, Shots und noch mehr Biere und Shots. Am nächsten Tag mussten wir frühmorgens den ganzen Weg nach London für den nächsten Gig fahren. Ich kann wetten, dass sich niemand mehr gut daran erinnern kann, wie wir im Hotel ankamen, aber wir hatten eine coole Zeit in der Bar im Backstage-Bereich. Und ja, hebt die Hörner hoch! Aber anstelle von Hörnern hatten wir Bierdosen und Schnapsgläser hahahahaha.

Matías (Vocals): It is a pleasure to chat with you guys again, at least virtually. We still have fresh memories of that very first time that we met and talk each other at Rage Against Racism Festival in Duisburg. Thanks a lot for your kind words on our new release, we’re stoked with the reception, a lot of positive feedback on media and -of course- from the metalheads whose like our music. „Murder Of Crows“ represents the new reality of Nuclear, and the music speaks by itlself: angry, heavy and raw.

Ideas and feelings about „Murder Of Crows“

MH: The making of every album or song is always something special. This means that it is based on certain circumstances and moods and often reflects the personal feelings of a musician.

Under which conditions was your album „Murder Of Crows“ created?

Francisco (Guitars): „Murder Of Crows“ was created out of the idea of going back to zero again. We had worked a lot in the past to obtain some sort of stability and to have a house where we could trust and rely our music on. All of a sudden that house was gone and we needed some start from scratch again.

We worked as friends and with absolutely no musical boundaries, we did not have anyone asking for the new stuff or setting a deadline to deliver. We took some serious time, but I think it was definitely worth it. Once we began working, things just kept on going and the result, 3 years later, might be considered as one of the band’s highest points.

The birth of „Murder Of Crows“

MH: With which idea or which song did the creation of the album start?

Francisco (Guitars): The first song we wrote for the album was „Hatetrend“. It was some sort of continuance of „Formula For Anarchy“ (maybe a little bit angrier), but nevertheless, the first, but it wasn´t until we came up with „No light After All“ that we really started working on „Murder Of Crows“. That song felt right, felt new and fresh, we were really comfortable playing it so I’d say that was the real kick off of the album.

Changes for NUCLEAR

MH: Are they still the same circumstances that accompanied NUCLEAR on the last albums?

Francisco (Guitars): No, they aren’t. Prior albums were written under different scenarios and moods. We were living a different time then. „Murder Of Crows“ caught us in a bad shape individually (I can speak for myself at least) and that is probably why it is that angry. We never thought about the outcome – we just went with it. Perhaps those different circumstances gave the album the spark it needed, who knows.

NUCLEAR ´s reckoning

MH: What or who do you settle up with? (Maybe many people don’t know what the current situation in CHILE is like? So from your point of view, could you briefly summarize what it’s all about and where the problems are).

Francisco (Guitars): Chile changed. Chile was one country before October 2019 and a totally different one after that. We realized there have been too many fuck ups and abuse over the years and that must be stopped. It is difficult to point a finger at someone, it has been a sum of many things that went down the drain over the years.

Politicians are the first to blame. Their selfishness and arrogance led the country to the downward spiral we see nowadays. Lack of health care, low salaries, the extremely high cost of living, it is barely impossible to make it here but our politicians will say everything is great and Chile is the most stable, prolific and sustainable country in South America. Sadly that is just another bullshit excuse to keep pulling the strings.

NUCLEAR ´s message for the nation

MH: Why did you write the song „Abusados“ in Spanish?

Francisco (Guitars): Because it was dedicated to the Chilean people and we wanted all to understand the lyrics.

The envirement of NUCLEAR ´s „Murder Of Crows“

MH: The political situation in Chile is anything but relaxed and the social grievances are omnipresent. Please tell us something about it! Did you personally or as a band ever have any difficulties with the system?

Matías (Vocals): Tough times indeed. Political and socially speaking. Since last year Chile passes through one of our most definitory trances since the end of military dictatorship back in the late 80s. Last year millions of people across Chile were on the streets protesting against decades of abuse, inequality and corruption. Tough days, brutal repression against protesters, people injured, people mutilated by riot police, some dead and the entire country seemed like a big bomb near to explode.

After that, we had to face one of the worst pandemic blasts in all our history. High contagion rates, many deads,  curfew, quarantine, disemployment, the economy in a downward spiral. I don’t know if is positive or correct to say „inspiration“, but all those situations created an atmosphere full of violence and anger also a dark mix of sadness and despair. That was the enviroment around „Murder Of Crows“.

The sick system

Straight to the point regarding to your questions: as inhabitants of Chile we always had, always have and always will have problems with the unfair system we live on. The „chilean democratic way“ means inequality, corporate abuse, political corruption and economic predation. Everything in our country was sold to multinational corporations, even the water.

Can you believe that? The water! It is frightening. Low wages, a totally collapsed public health system, miserable pensions to elder people, business and filthy lucre on education, politicians acting like lobbists for big business, police brutality, just to name a few things. That is Chile in the 21st century. And it is sad, because who wants to think in the future if our own present is so depressing, so negative?

We’re not political activists but as citizens we have our points of view, and we try to represent that thoughts in our music. And show some of our own reality to other people whom maybe don’t know how the things are going in this side of the world. And that is what music means to us: an expression of brutality in really though times, life isn’t easy in South America, and the last two years being very difficult to Chileans as well.

Metal-Szene in Chile

MH: Let’s talk a little bit about metal scene in Chile. You have been making music for several years now and I think you have been through a lot.

Seba (Guitars):  For me, it make no sense to compare the early years with the current situation, because everything changed drastically. Internet and communications has rebuilt the way people interact socially. It is really hard to find people sharing albums, tapes or fanzines like before. Nowadays Spotify or YouTube replaced that meeting points, but I think is also cool because more people have access to music.

In Chile many people are metal fans, big concerts have big attendances but honestly I don’t think we have a metal scene or maybe nowadays. It is different than the past. We have bands, but we don’t have a strong movement around metal and the genre is still some kind of sub-culture for most of the people. Metal music is far away from culture media and we don’t have specialized media, professional media around metal for example. It’s kinda very underground thing still here.

The Childhood

MH: Let’s go further back in time.  What kind of experience comes to your mind spontaneously when you remember your childhood and youth?

Punto (Drums): I have very good memories of when I was a child and I began to know many things such as music. It comes to mind when I was 11 years old and I was already listening to bands like IRON MAIDEN and METALLICA, but when I heard SEPULTURA or SLAYER, it was a new world.

It was the year 1992 and in our city there was a store that brought metal and we were able to discover the most extreme new wave of the style: Death Metal, discovering bands like MORBID ANGEL, DEATH, OBITUARY, ENTOMBED, DISMEMBER, NAPALM DEATH among others. Those years helped me to meet bands, people who were in the same way with you and to generate more contacts with people  inside and outside of Arica (my hometown). Finally, we liked the idea of making music and with friends that we had at school and influenced by our favorite bands. It was born from making a band and it has not stopped until now.

MH: Do you have kids yourself?

Punto (Drums): Yeah, his name is NUCLEAR, jejejeje. No, I dont. Personally I took a decision when i was child don´t have any kids, because I always wanted to have a band and this has been my project of whole life.

Memories of first music listening

MH: Who or what awakened your interest in music at that time and in the further course of time especially for metal music? 

Matias (Vocals): My oldest memory is when i was a child and listened to AC/DC for the very frist time. I think i was eight years old maybe and listened to „Who Made Who“ on a local radio station. It was something powerful, the guitars, Brian Johnson’s voice, the drums. Undescriptible. After that i repetidely started to ask my mom to give me „Who Made Who“ as a gift. And so it was.

After that the search for heavier music like thrash or death metal started and never stopped. With the guys we love to listen to new music, every rehearsal someone recommend a new band, an album, a single, wathever. I think you can be always suprised by music, its versatility or its variety. And that’s great because it is a universe in contant expansion.

MH: What did your parents think about this idea when you decided to play metal music and wanted to form a band?

Seba (Guitars): At home we always had a good relationship between music and arts. My brothers also deveoloped themselves into artistic careers. Then, I decided to study sound engineering and dedicate myself to music full time, as music producer and musician. I think it wasn’t weird for my family. With Francisco and Punto we started the band when we were schoolmates, very young. Actually I think my family was more frightened for the cover art of the records that we exchanged and listened to back in those times hahahaha.

Christmas is coming

MH: Christmas is coming soon, also for the hard guys of NUCLEAR. What are your thoughts about it this year? How is Christmas celebrated in Chile?

Matías (Vocals): It will be a very different Christmas time this year. We’re still under pandemic and all kind of restrictions. I don’t know if will be the same like other years, but I personally will have some kind of intimate celebration with my wife and son, spinning some records, and grabing some beers.  Replying your question, in Chile Xmas is widely celebrated, lot of barbecues everywhere and family meetings. As difference with Germany, we’re in summer and you can imagine all those long bearded Santa Claus costume guys boiling inside their suits with 32° degrees, no snow, no deers and no elfs.

„Cola de Mono“ the hellish beverage

MH: What does the „Cola de Mono“ tell you? Is there a story about it?

Matías (Vocals): Yes, „Cola de Mono“ the hellish beverage. Take note: milk, 50% proof alcohol called „aguardiente“, coffee and sugar. Everything mixed in one glass or bottle and served with some kind of sweet bread. The first thing is milk with alcohol? damn! I cannot recommend to survive a hangover after drinking that, for me was a near-death experience, literally speaking hahahaha.

I still remember that night: we were listening to some albums of metal bands with my best friend of that times, we were teenagers, no much money in our pockets. The only way to solve that was to take a bottle of „Cola de Mono“ from my friend’s grandma fridge. Wrong decision. The elder woman used to „improve“ the beverage with high percentages of aguardiente in the mix. The final result was catastrophic, we literally got drunk in minutes and it was one of the worst hangovers i have memory hahahaha, we felt ablaze all the day after. Summer, hangover, milk with alcohol. Bad decision, absolutely!

NUCLEAR at Rage Against Racism 2019

MH: What memories do you have of the Rage Against Racism Festival 2019?

Francisco (Guitars): The best and I am not saying this just because. We really had a blast that day. It was a Saturday and we were coming from another festival. Since we arrived in the morning everything worked perfectly: the people, the crew, the vibe, food, drinks, everything was in place. It felt like home and we enjoyed every second of it. It was like a big metal family working for the same goal and we would’ve loved to stay longer that night at the afterparty but we had a show in London the next day so we had to leave. We often chat between us and remember RAR. We NEED to come back one day and relive everything once again. RAR was one of those things in life that got stuck forever, I guess. Thanks again for letting us be a part of that.

NUCLEAR ´s last words on „Raise Your Horns“

MH: What do you think about the following pictures? Does anything look familiar to you?

Matías (Vocals): Hahahaha maybe is not the same, but remembers me the final minutes before we left Rage Against Racism on our way to the hotel. Beers, shots, and more beers and shots. Early in the morning the next day we had to travel all the way to London for the next gig. I can bet nobody remembers well how we arrive to hotel, but we had a cool time in the bar at the backstage. And yes, raise the horns up! But instead of horns we had beercans and shot glasses hahahahaha.

in a very brutal manner is played by the South Americans NUCLEAR (Facebook) from Chile. The band was founded under a different name in the mid 90’s, disbanded in 2001 and resurrected under NUCLEAR in 2003. In the course of its history the band has been on stage with many famous bands such as TESTAMENT, VOIVOD or DESTRUCTION. In 2017, they even took part in the „Rage Against Racism“ festival in Germany and heated up the audience. They were interviewed by ‚metal-heads.de‘ in 2019 (look here). On 2020-11-13 NUCLEAR will now release their new work „Murder Of Crows“ onto the world.

Not for tender minds

The album is free of any romance or harmony, because here hard reality is the inspiration for the lyrics and the sound. Here you are shaken up, your red blood cells sweep moshpitlike through your body and the pulse accelerates immediately to 180! And that in a raw and impetuous way, that it blows the wax out of your ears. Here you’ll find classic Thrash-Metal, which for example is based on the earlier SLAYER-albums and of course has parallels to for example EXODUS and KREATOR. It is an angry album with many important hard-hitting messages that deals with the difficult political situation in the country.

The cruel reality in Chile

The situation is very difficult and has become increasingly heated in recent years. Although Pinochet’s dictatorship ended in 1990, the country has not been able to find peace in 30 years. The rule of elites is one of the greatest abuses. Wealth and power are concentrated in a small part of the population, while half of the population lives in poverty. Politicians in particular are the target of criticism, who enrich themselves at the expense of the population. Oppression, corruption and violence characterise everyday life. The core issue now is the adoption of a new constitution. People demand fundamental reforms and the anchoring of basic rights such as health and education in the constitution for example. The state uses all possible force against demonstrators. Even the military was sent to the streets for the first time in 30 years. You have to watch the latest video of the song

„Abusados“ (Abused)

that the current situation in the country is very impressive. The pictures are very harsh and frightening. But it is (unfortunately) real. The song itself is accordingly hard. At first it stomps forward brutally furious, only to unload itself completely with all its power in a speedy finale. The crazy and precisely played guitar solo cuts directly into your brain.

And this is exactly what you can expect on the rest of the album. The maxim is:

No restraint, just full throttle!

You can convince yourself of this directly with the second song „No Light After All“. This is the uncompromising unleashing of thrashy energy, simply pure frenzy.

Throughout the whole album the partly death-heavy sound goes on with a force and wildness that will fill you through and through with this energy. When you’re lying on the floor completely exhausted, the sound should give you a boost like three shots of adrenaline directly into your heart to get you back up and keep fighting. NUCLEAR live up to their name and shine on their album „Murder Of Crows“ with an almost uncontrollable energy that will directly take possession of you and push you to the end. An angry honest album in a very difficult time with a message that cannot be ignored. This is raw unadulterated Thrash Metal straight to your face!

vom allergemeinsten bieten die Südamerikaner NUCLEAR aus Chile. Die Band wurde unter anderem Namen schon Mitte der 90´er gegründet, löste sich dann 2001 auf, um dann 2003 unter dem aktuellen Namen wieder aufzuerstehen. Die Band stand im Laufe ihrer Historie schon mit vielen großen Bands auf der Bühne, so z.B. TESTAMENT, VOIVOD oder DESTRUCTION. Im Jahre 2017 gaben sie sich sogar auf dem „Rage Against Racism“-Festival (übrigens `metal-heads.de´ supported) die Ehre und heizten dem Publikum ordentlich ein. 2019 standen sie in einem Interview bei `metal-heads.de´Rede und Antwort (Link). Am 13.11.2020 lassen NUCLEAR nun ihr neues Werk „Murder Of Crows“ (Mörder der Krähen“) auf die Welt los.

Nichts für zarte Seelen

und Schmusefreunde ist der rohe ungestüme Sound, der einem den Schmalz aus den Ohren ballert. Das Album ist frei von jeglicher Romantik oder Harmonie, denn hier steht die harte Realität Pate für die Texte und den Sound. Hier werdet Ihr wachgerüttelt, Eure roten Blutkörperchen fegen moshpitmäßig durch Euren Körper und der Puls beschleunigt umgehend auf 180! Klassischer Thrash-Metal ist angesagt, der sich z.B. an frühere SLAYER-Alben anlehnt und natürlich auch Parallelen zu beispielsweise EXODUS und KREATOR aufweist. Es ist ein wütendes Album mit vielen wichtigen knallharten Botschaften, die sich mit der schwierigen politischen Lage im Land beschäftigen.

Die harte Realität in Chile

ist omnipräsent und heizte sich in den letzten Jahren immer weiter auf. Die Diktatur Pinochets ist zwar seit dem Jahre 1990 beendet, aber dem Land gelang es in 30 Jahren nicht zur Ruhe zu kommen. Die Herrschaft von Eliten ist eines der größten Missstände. Der Reichtum und die Macht konzentriert sich auf einen kleinen Teil der Bevölkerung, während die Hälfte der Bevölkerung in Armut lebt. Vor allem die Politiker sind Ziel der Kritik, welche sich auf Kosten der Bevölkerung bereichern. Unterdrückung, Korruption und Gewalt prägen den Alltag. Im Kern geht es nun um die Verabschiedung einer neuen Verfassung. Das Volk fordert grundlegende Reformen und eine Verankerung der Grundrechte wie z.B. Gesundheit und Bildung in der Verfassung. Der Staat geht mit aller Gewalt gegen Demonstranten vor. Sogar das Militär wurde seit 30 Jahren das erste Mal wieder auf die Straßen geschickt. Dazu müsst Ihr Euch das neueste Video von dem Song

„Abusados“ (Missbraucht)

ansehen, dass die derzeitige Lage im Land sehr eindrucksvoll darstellt. Die Bilder sind sehr hart und erschreckend. Aber es ist (leider) real. Der Song „Abusados“ selber geht dementsprechend hart zur Sache. Er stampft zunächst brutal wütend voran, um sich dann vollends mit aller Gewalt in einem speedigen Finale zu entladen. Das irre und präzise gespielte Gitarrensolo fräst sich direkt in die Gehirnwindungen.

Und genau das ist es auch, was Euch auf dem Rest des Albums erwartet. Das Motto lautet:

Ruhepausen Fehlanzeige, dafür umso mehr Vollgas.

Davon könnt Ihr Euch direkt bei dem zweiten Song „No Light After All“ überzeugen. Das ist die kompromisslose Entfesselung von thrashiger Energie, einfach pure Raserei.

Auf dem gesamten Album geht der teils deathlastige Sound mit einer Wucht und Wildheit voran, dass er Euch mit Energie bis zum Anschlag vollpumpen wird. Wenn Ihr völlig fertig am Boden liegt, dürftet Ihr bei dem Sound einen Schub bekommen wie bei drei Spritzen Adrenalin direkt ins Herz, um wieder aufzustehen und weiter zu kämpfen. Fazit

NUCLEAR machen ihrem Namen alle Ehre und strahlen auf ihrem Album „Murder Of Crows“ mit einer kaum zu bändigenden Energie, die direkt von Euch Besitz ergreift und Euch bis zum Ende puschen wird. Ein wütendes ehrliches Album in einer sehr schwierigen Zeit mit einer Botschaft, die nicht zu überhören ist. Das ist roher unverfälschter Thrash-Metal direkt in die Fresse!
