Nattverds authentischer 1990er-Jahre-Black-Metal ist das Ergebnis einer ungewöhnlichen Gründungsgeschichte. Denn ursprünglich wurde die Band bereits in den 1990er Jahren in Bergen, Norwegen, ins Leben gerufen. Jedoch hinderten verschiedene äußere Umstände die tatsächliche Umsetzung. Es dauerte bis 2014, bis die Band wirklich aktiv wurde. Das neue Album ist ein guter Anlass, einmal nachzufragen.

MH: Auch wenn Ihr erst 2014 richtig aktiv geworden seid: Die Geschichte Eurer Gründung reicht bis in die 1990er Jahre zurück. Was verbindet Ihr mit dieser Epoche des Black Metal? Inwiefern hat Euch das beeinflusst?

Nattverd: Unser gesamter Einfluss stammt aus dieser Zeit. Es war mysteriöser, mehr Underground. Alles
war physischer. Um an die Musik zu kommen, musste man Tonbänder tauschen. Und man musste Briefe von Hand schreiben. Nicht mehr wie heutzutage, wo man einfach auf dem Handy auf „Play“ drücken muss und schon Zugriff auf alles hat, was es gibt an Musik. Es ist wahrscheinlich ein zweischneidiges Schwert mit Vor- und Nachteilen. Aber hiervon ist Nattverd beeinflusst. Wir versuchen nicht, etwas neu zu erfinden, sondern schreiben Musik, die sich für uns natürlich anfühlt.

MH: Welche Kontinuitäten seht Ihr in Euren vier Alben? Was macht das neue Album besonders?

N: Musikalisch ist es ganz wie immer. Der Unterschied besteht darin, dass wir wissen, dass wir live gespielt haben. Und wir haben ziemlich viel zusammen geprobt. Das macht die Musikalität auch viel dichter. Ich würde alles sagen, alle Alben sind etwas Besonderes. Sie repräsentieren, was Nattverd zu dieser Zeit und an diesem Ort war.

Interview: Nattverd – neues musikalisches Niveau dank neuem Studio und Tontechniker

N: Der größte Unterschied beim neuen Album besteht darin, dass wir das Studio gewechselt haben. Wir haben im Caliban Studio mit Tontechniker Ruben Willem aufgenommen. Das Studio liegt tief im Wald in Norwegen, an einem großen See. Düster, ruhig. Und Ruben brachte auch einige seiner Ideen mit, die die Musik und das musikalische Können auf ein neues Niveau hoben. Ich würde sagen, das ist der größte Unterschied. Auch auf dem neuen Album hat unser neuer Gitarrist Aven einiges geschrieben. Musik, die das Album auch abwechslungsreicher machte.

N: Wir werden in die Caliban Studios bereits im November dieses Jahres zurückkehren, um unser nächstes Album aufzunehmen. Es ist eine Fortsetzung von I Helvetes Forakt, da das Material von beiden Alben im gleichen Zeitraum geschrieben wurden. Aber es waren zu viele Songs, um sie auf nur einem einzigen Album unterzubringen.

MH: In Deutschland seid Ihr nicht so bekannt wie in Skandinavien. Wie schätzt Ihr Eure Fans hier ein? Sind in diesem Land Auftritte oder eine Tournee geplant?

N: Ehrlich gesagt, ich habe keine Ahnung, wie viele Fans wir irgendwo haben. Ich weiß, dass Deutschland sehr wichtig ist für den Black Metal im Allgemeinen. Ich hoffe sehr, dass wir bald in Deutschland spielen werden. Im Moment ist nichts geplant, aber hoffentlich wird in naher Zukunft etwas geplant.

Interview: Nattverd Is Back In the Studio This Fall

Interview: Nattverd have just released their fourth album, I Helvetes Forakt. Although they are well known in Scandinavia, they still fly a little under the radar in Germany. But Nattverd’s style offers a musical journey through time that will delight fans of old-school black metal.

Nattverd’s authentic 1990s black metal is the result of an unusual founding story. The band originally formed in Bergen, Norway, back in the 1990s. However, various external circumstances prevented the actual implementation. It wasn’t until 2014 that the band really got active. The new album is a good reason to ask here.

MH: Even if you only became really active in 2014: the history of your founding dates back to the 1990s. What do you associate with this epoch of Black Metal? To what extent did that influence you?

Nattverd: All of our influence comes from this period. It was more mysterious, more underground. Everything was more physical. You had to tape trade to get to the music. And you had to write letters by hand. Not like these days, where you can just press play on your phone, and you have access to all there is of music. It’s probably a double edged sword, with good and bads. But this is where Nattverd is influenced by, we’re not trying to re-invent anything, but write music that feels natural to us.

MH: What continuities do you see across your four albums? What makes the new album special?

N: Musically it’s quite the same as always. The difference is that we know we have played live, and we have rehearsed together quite alot. That makes the musicianship also much more tight. I would say all albums are special, they represent what Nattverd was in that time and place.

Interview: Nattverd – New Musical Level Thanks To New Studio And Sound Engineer

N: Biggest difference on the new album is that we changed studios. We recorded at Caliban Studio, with engineer Ruben Willem. The studio is located deep in the forest in Norway, at a big lake. Somber, quiet. And Ruben also came with some of his ideas that lifted the music and musicianship to a next level. I would say that is the biggest difference. Also on the new album, our new guitarist Aven also wrote some of the music, that also made the album more varied.

N: We will already enter Caliban Studios in november this year to record our next album, which is a continuation of I Helvetes Forakt, since the material of these albums where written in the same timeline, but to many songs to put on just one album.

MH: In Germany you are not as well known as in Scandinavia. How do you rate your fans here in Germany? Are there any performances or a tour planned in this country?

N: Honestly, I have no idea how many fans we have anywhere. I know Germany is very important for black metal in general. I sure hope that we will play in Germany soon. At the moment nothing is planned, but hopefully something will be planned in the near future.​

Denn die aus Bergen, Norwegen, stammende Band wurde ursprünglich schon in den 1990er Jahren gegründet. Unterschiedliche, äußere Umstände verzögerten die tatsächliche Gründung jedoch bis ins Jahr 2014. Denn die Band war über weite Strecken also inaktiv. Und sie hat in ihrer Geschichte einige Line-up-Änderungen durchlaufen. Einige, erste Titel wurden in dieser frühen, inaktiven Zeit von den Gründern Ormr (Gesang, Gitarre) und Atyr geschrieben (Gitarre).

Diese Tracks gingen später in das Debütalbum „Vi vet gud Er En Løgner“ aus dem Jahr 2017 ein. Der Albumtitel lässt sich in etwa übersetzen mit „Wir wissen, dass Gott ein Lügner ist“. Und spätestens jetzt dürfte die Laufrichtung der Musik von Nattverd klar sein…

„I Helvetes Forakt“ von Nattverd: Es lebe der Black Metal der 1990er Jahre

Nattverd ist musikalisch und textlich stark von der norwegischen Black-Metal-Szene der 1990er Jahre beeinflusst. Die Musik und die Stimmung dieser Zeit greifen Nattverd auf außergewöhnlich präzise Weise auf. Gleichzeitig ist das Album abwechslungsreich, vielfältig und überrascht hier und da mit variantenreicher Kreativität. Die Norweger spielen rohe und aggressive Musik, die von dunklen und okkulten Themen geprägt ist. Die in norwegischer Sprache gehaltenen Texte von Nattverd behandeln erwartungsgemäß satanische und antichristliche Themen. Man könnte sagen, Nattverd konservieren den norwegischen Black Metal der 1990er Jahren in einer eiskalten Dose aus Schwarzblech.

Nattverd (Norwegian for night ride) have an unusual founding history. This is worth telling. Because the band from Bergen, Norway, was originally founded in the 1990s. However, different external circumstances delayed the actual founding until 2014. Thus, the band was inactive for long periods of time. And they went through quite a few lineup changes in her history. Some first titles were written in this early, inactive time by the founders Ormr (vocals, guitar) and Atyr (guitar).

These tracks later went into 2017’s debut album, Vi vet gud Er En Løgner. The album title can be roughly translated as „We know that God is a liar“. And by now at the latest, the direction of Nattverd’s music should be clear…

Musically and lyrically, Nattverd is heavily influenced by the Norwegian black metal scene of the 1990s. Nattverd captures the music and mood of this period with exceptional precision. Nattverd’s Norwegian-language lyrics, as you might expect, deal with satanic and anti-Christian themes.
