Am 26.08. ist das neue Album aus dem Hause Vicious Rumors „Concussion Protocol“ erschienen. Wie ihr HIER nachlesen könnt, war ich davon ziemlich angetan. Umso größer daher die Freude. als sich die Gelegenheit zu einem Interview mit Bandgründer und Gitarrist Geoff Thorpe ergab. Lest im nachfolgenden, was uns Geoff zum neuen Album, Neu-Sänger Nick Hollemann, Besetzungswechseln, den deutschen Fans und zukünftigen Tourplänen zu sagen hat.

Vicious Rumors – Das Interview

Hello, I’m Uwe from metal-heads.de (MH) and I’m glad to have the possibility to ask you a few questions.

Geoff Thorpe (GT): Sure…bring it on!!

MH: I just listened to your new album “Concussion Protocol” and I like it very much. The sound is very good and the songs have much power, but it also offers a lot of variety. Are you happy with the result?

GT: Definetly. It took us nearly 1 1/2 years to write and produce the album but it was worth it. The reactions are unbelievable.

Progressive Einflüsse und der neue Sänger

MH: There are a lot of very good songs, but for me one song is very special. While hearing “Circle Of Secrets” I thought about Queensryche. What do you think about this comparison?

GT: Oh, you are the first one who says that. But you are right there are some progressive elements in the song. I always liked Queensryche or Fates Warning, so perhaps I had them in mind while writing the song.

MH: With Nick Hollemann you have a new singer in the band. I did not know him yet, but his voice harmonizes very well with the sound of Vicious Rumors. Where and how did you find him?

GT: A dear friend of mine in the Netherlands who plays in a band called My Big Brother Jake recommended Nick to me. I saw his natural talent and abbility right away. After he send in two songs on video he became the first member of Vicious Rumors which I hired immediately without an audition. Now he’s our lead singer for three years and with this chemistry we made one of the most powerful and exciting albums of our career.

30 Jahre Vicious Rumors – Erfolgreich in Deutschland

MH: Vicious Rumors exist for more than 30 years now. In this time the members of the band changed very often. Could that be a reason, that the success of Vicious Rumors is not like you would deserve it?

GT: We were really on a roll but then Carl Albert died and we have to reform and try to continue. Sometimes it’s not easy to find the right people..it takes time. So I’m more than glad now that now we have the umltimate line-up again.

MH: In Germany there are a lot of Vicious Rumors-fans. What do you think is the reason for being popular especially in Germany?

GT: We toured a lot in Germany beginning of the 90s..with Forbidden, Megadeth, Savatage, Metal Church and many others…more than we toured in the US..:-) The german fans are loyal and with the new album we entered the Top 100 charts in Germany for the first time which is FUCKING awesome!!!

MH: If you think back in the history of Vicious Rumors, is there something you´d like to change if you could?

GT: When Carl Albert died I said to myself carl would like to want us to continue so I checked different singers. But nobody really could sing the songs like Carl did. So I said..okay I will do it. Now I would said that I should have waited to find the right singer but at that time I thought it was the right thing to do. I mean the album got mixed reviews but we toured through Europe on a massive tour with ACCEPT which also helped us to bring the name Vicious Rumors back to the fans.

Mit Dirkschneider auf Europatour

MH: It’s 30 years ago since you released your first album “Soldiers Of The Night”. Have you planned something special for this anniversary-year?

GT: No but we will play some songs on our European Tour with Dirkschneider im autumn 2016. This is a hell of a tour and I can’t wait to start.

MH: Final question: Do you have a message for your fans and the visitors of metal-heads.de?

GT: Thanks so much for your support and believing in Vicious Rumors. The ball is definetly rolling again!!!!!

Kaum zu glauben, aber wahr! 30 Jahre ist es her seit mit „Soldiers Of The Night“ ein Album das Licht der Welt erblickte, dass in der Metal Szene einschlug wie eine Bombe! Der Begriff Power Metal wurde durch dieses Album quasi definiert. Es ist wohl den vielen Besetzungswechseln geschuldet, dass Vicious Rumors nie den ganz großen Erfolg hatten, der ihnen vom Potential her gebührt hätte. Mit wieder einmal leicht geänderter Mannschaft macht sich VR daran, ein neues Kapitel in der Bandgeschichte aufzuschlagen.

Vicious Rumors wollen es noch mal wissen

Dem Bandchef und Gitarristen Geoff Thorpe und langjährigem Drummer Larry Howe haben sich Nick Hollemann (Gesang) und Tilen Hudrpa (Bass) angeschlossen. Zudem sind die Gitarristen Steve Smyth, Brad Gillis und Thaen Rasmussen als Gastmusiker dabei. Hoffentlich gelingt es Geoff, diese Truppe für eine längere Zeit zusammen zu halten, denn die Musiker liefern mit „Concussion Protocol“ einen beeindruckenden Beweis ihres Könnens ab. Insbesondere Sänger Nick Hollemann kann vollauf überzeugen. Er kann seine Stimme den Songs entsprechend aggressiv einsetzen, beherrscht aber genauso die ruhigen Töne. Ein echter Gewinn für Vicious Rumors.

Power, Härte und Abwechslung

Überwiegend geht es bei den 11 Songs auf „Concussion Protocol“ mächtig zur Sache. Dabei wird trotzdem eine Menge Abwechslung geboten, da sowohl das Tempo variiert wird, als auch der Sound der Songs durchaus Unterschiede aufweist. Mal geht es mehr in Richtung Teutonen Rock à la ACCEPT, mal ist typischer NWOBHM-Sound im Stile von Judas Priest zu hören. Dann wiederum geht es in Richtung Bay Area Thrash. Die größte Überraschung des Albums ist für mich aber der Song „Circle Of Secrets“. Er zeigt Vicious Rumors mal von einer neuen Seite und erinnert mich ganz stark an Queensryche. Fantastisch, dass die Band nach so vielen Jahren noch in der Lage ist, neue musikalische Seiten aufzuschlagen!

Vicious Rumors – Stronger Than Ever

Abschließend lässt sich festhalten, dass sich Vicious Rumors auf „Concussion Protocol“ stärker denn je zurück melden. Wer die Band bisher zu seinen Favoriten zählte, braucht gar nicht lange zu zögern, um den nächsten Plattenladen (gibt es den überhaupt noch?) zu stürmen. Für alle übrigen Freunde des Power Metal gilt, hört in die Scheibe rein und gibt der Truppe um Geoff Thorpe unbedingt eine Chance. Ihr werdet es nicht bereuen!!!

Vicious Rumors – Neues Album im August

Die kalifornischen Power-Metaller von Vicious Rumors haben für den 26. August 2016 ihr neues Album angekündigt. Das Werk wird den Namen „Concussion Protocol“ tragen und via SPV/Steamhammer als DigiPak mit CD und Poster und als Doppel-LP in rotem Vinyl mit CD erhältlich sein. Neben Bandleader und Gitarrist Geoff Thorpe und Drummer Larry Howe sind dabei erstmals auch der neue Sänger Nick Hollemann und Neu-Bassist Tilen Hudrpa zu hören. Als Gastmusiker sind die Gitarristen Steve Smyth, Brad Gillis und Thaen Rasmussen mit an Bord. Das Album soll alle Trademarks liefern, die Vicious Rumors seit jeher auszeichnen, als da wären: melodischer und kraftvoller Gesang, fette Gitarrenriffs und Solos, Double-Bass Schlagzeug Donner, verrückte Bassläufe und Songs im traditionellen Vicious Rumors Gewand.

Vicious Rumors – Die Bandgeschichte in Kürze

Die US-amerikanische Power-Metal-Band wurde im Jahr 1979 von Geoff Thorpe in Santa Rosa, Kalifornien gegründet. Thorpe ist in der von häufigen Umbesetzungen geprägten Geschichte der Band die einzige personelle Konstante. Bei ihrer Gründung bestand die Band neben Thorpe aus Sänger Mark Tate, Gitarrist Jim Cassero, Bassist Jeff Barnacle und Walt Perkins am Schlagzeug. Mit Sänger Gary St. Pierre, Bassist Dave Starr, Schlagzeuger Larry Howe und dem später vor allem als Sologitarrist tätigen Vinnie Moore erschien im Jahr 1986 das Debütalbum „Soldiers of the Night“, das vor allem in Europa einige Beachtung fand. Mit ständig wechselnder Besetzung nahm die Band bisher 11 Studioalben auf. Die häufigen Besetzungswechsel sind sicher mit ein Grund dafür, dass Vicious Rumors zwar einen gewissen Kult-Status besitzen, der ganz große Erfolg aber bisher ausgeblieben ist.

Hoffen wir darauf, dass der Nachfolger von „Electric Punishment“ aus dem Jahr 2013 so richtig einschlägt. metal-heads.de wird das neue Album jedenfalls einer genauen Prüfung unterziehen!
