Nachdem mir das aktuelle Album der Herrschaften on MINDTECH sehr gut gefallen hat, habe ich die Chance genutzt und ein paar Fragen an Drummer Ole Devold gerichtet. Hier kommt das Interview…

MH: To tell you the truth, I´ve not heard of your band before! But our goal is, to promote all kinds of rock and metal, especially the upcoming talents and bands not so much in the focus so far. They need the support. My review is already up on our homepage (it´s in German though). If I was asked, you and your music deserve more attention and so I wanna give you the chance today, to give the people out there chance to learn about your band and music.

OD: We truly appreciate it !

How it all began – MINDTECH

MH: let´s start quite in the beginning. I´d be interested to know, how you got you into starting this band? Who´s idea was it and how did it begin and develop? Maybe you can give our readers a short summary of that.

OD: The band was started as a project by Thor Axel. We had played together in another Norwegian Progressive metal band called TRITONUS before and he just wanted me to track drums for a few songs he had written. This project evolved into the first album „Elements of Warfare“. For this album we had Aslak Johnsen, the bass player/singer of another band I play in, do the vocals and a session bass player. Things slowly evolved and the project turned into a band with the current line up. We released the EP „Edge Of The World“ in 2016 and four years later we now have a new album that we’re very proud of.

MH: I was very positively surprised when hearing the material of „Omnipresence“. And so I’m happy, that I got in touch with your music, which is not so easy in the numerous releases coming out every week. I you would like to convince people to gibe it a try or even buy your album. What would you say is special and makes „the difference“?

The idea behind „Omnipresence“

OD: Thank you for the kind words. Well, we’re big fans of heavy and energetic music but with strong melodies so if you’re of that disposition then our „Omnipresence“-album is for you. In short we tried to make an album that we ourselves would really dig and the hope is that we’re not the only ones 😉

MH: what was your intention to start with this kind of music? In how far have youreached your goal already or what are the upcoming plans fort he future?

OD: As mentioned we just want to create music that we really like ourselves. In terms of goals, they’re constantly moving so who knows what the future will bring. Again, our main objective is to create the best metal songs that we can.

MH: how do you split up the jobs, when it comes to the writing of new material? Who is in charge of the music and who mainly contributes the lyrics?

The songwriting and sending files around

OD: It is a fairly democratic process but in general the riffs and basic structure of a song usually come from Thor Axel and Marius (guitars). Then, we usually start a process of adding things, removing things, playing with the arrangement and adding lyrics and melodies. The song writing phase is mostly done digitally with files being sent back and forth. 

MH: what are your main influences and how do you balance the various kinds of input like from prog to metal?

OD: We have a butt-load of influences, ranging from classical music to the most brutal death metal. Inspiration is everywhere. When it comes to writing songs, we seldom think about influences, it is just a case of letting the inspiration flow as see what comes out.

MH: I find your music very melodic and overall easy to approach. Many progressive bands are quite hard to deal with, as the songs are to complex etc. – is it your intention to keep it „easy“ or did it just develop that way without purpose?

OD: As mentioned above, we don’t really think that much about it. However, we’re all big fans of strong melody hooks so it kind of comes naturally.

Sad to hear…no touring plans…

MH: are there any plans for some touring, maybe even in Germany or the Netherlands? Festival appearances in 2020?

OD: No plans as of now. It is kind of hard getting gigs for a relatively unknown band, unless you catch a support act slot on a tour (which usually involves some kind of investment).

MH: what musicians would you love to share the stage with and/or what band would you like to tour with and why?

OD: In general we would like to tour with any band.

MH: yes I know, your experiences may me just a few so far. Still I´d like to know: festival, club gig or big venue? There are various kinds of gigs to play for a band to play. Small sweaty club gigs, big venues or even stadiums and then these 3-day-festivals in front of 50.000 to 120.000 people. What kind of performances do you prefer and why?

OD: Again, in general we’re happy just to get to play. The different kind of gigs have their own pros and cons. A smaller club gig is awesome, because you get closer to the audience and the energy is in some sense more intense. Playing in front of a lot of people in a festival setting is fun, because there are usually a lot more people, but there is also more of a distance to the audience so the interaction is different.

Playing live versus „Youtube-musicians“

MH: the final words is always to our interview partners. Here YOU get the chance to tell the people out there something, that you think is important, regarding music in general, the latest album or whatever. So, here weg go…

OD: Hmmmm …. I think it is important for musicians to get together and play in bands, get out and play live. There’s a lot of „Youtube musicians“ these days, amazingly talented, nothing wrong with that, but it is a totally different ballgame getting out there and playing for people … and it can be incredibly rewarding interacting with a live crowd. Also, I think it would be good, if one could shed the „everything needs to be perfect“ idea. I mean, do the work and make sure, that your performance is as good as it can be, but the idea that „everything needs to be perfect“, can be a real killer …. shit is probably going to happen, deal with it and move on.

MH: thanx for sharing your time and all the info. I wish you all the best with the album and the future efforts and hope to see you perform live on stage at some point

OD: Thank you very much, my pleasure.

Wir von metal-heads.de sind ja unermüdlich auf der Suche nach Bands, die noch nicht so im Fokus stehen und dennoch oder gerade deswegen unsere und eure Aufmerksamkeit besonders verdienen. Heute fällt unser Blick nach Oslo im hohen Norden Europas. Von dort kommt eine Formation, die schon 2007 gegründet wurde und das eine oder andere Release veröffentlicht hat. Es gab zahlreiche Line up-Wechsel, die das Vorwärtskommen teilweise erheblich erschwert haben. Jetzt aber ist es endlich soweit.

Die neue Scheibe mit dem prägnanten Titel „Omnipresence“ steht Mitte März in den Regalen. Ich bin darauf gestoßen und dachte mir, das Album stelle ich euch mal vor.

Gefahr bei kurzem Anchecken!

Das ist die Gefahr, wenn man nur kurz ‘reinhört oder einzelne Tracks als Maßstab nimmt. Man bekommt einen völlig falschen Eindruck. So auch hier. Wenn man nur mal kurz den Opener oder auch die ersten Takte von „The lotus eyed“ hineinlauscht, bekommt man das Gefühl, hier steht Heavyness im Vordergrund. Wobei schon ansatzweise ‘rüberkommt, dass MINDTECH auch durchaus mit melodischen Elementen arbeiten können. Man muss halt erst einmal den ersten Schwung an Härte überstanden haben…

Es geht auch mit Gefühl…

Aber mit Songs wie „These are the days“ zeigt man auch seine gefühlvollere Seite. Nur weil man sich dem Progressive Metal verschrieben hat, präsentiert sich die Truppe um Sänger Mathias Molund Indergard da wandlungsfähig. Es rockt noch richtig gut, aber man wird nicht gleich so erschlagen…Hahaha! Wenn man sich das Album so immer wieder in seiner Gänze anhört, dann wäre vielleicht eine etwas andere Reihenfolge der Songs günstiger gewesen. Da gibt es nämlich echt eingängige Tracks, die den Erstkontakt möglicherweise etwas vereinfachen. Diese gemischt mit den härteren Nummern würde den Hörer bei Laune halten und dabei die Vielseitigkeit unterstreichen. So sehe ich die Gefahr, dass manch einer nach den ersten beiden Songs „aussteigt“.

Mit Track 7 geht es wieder etwas gemäßigter los, um dann aber loszurocken. Beim letzten Song ist dann genau andersherum. Der Einstieg ist heavy und dann geht es etwas zurückhaltender weiter. Tempowechsel in der Songstruktur und der variable Gesang dazu. Prima gemacht!

Ein starkes Album – unbedingt antesten!

Fazit: besser spät als nie. Ich bin immer wieder erstaunt, wie es so manche Band schafft, trotz einer schon beeindruckend langen Existenz so komplett an mir vorbeigegangen zu sein. Aber irgendwann ist ein Anfang gemacht. Und ich freue mich, denn der Fünfer aus Norwegen liefert dem Hörer abwechslungsreiche Songs. „The journey“ hat richtig Mitsingqualitäten und macht sich bestimmt gut auf einem Live-Konzert. Wieder heavy, aber getragen von Thor-Axel Eriksen und Marius G. Belseth an der Saitenfront ist auch genug Melodie dabei. Klasse! Der Gesang gefällt mir und er bildet eine Ergänzung, wenn nicht gar manchmal einen Gegenpart zu den schweren Gitarrenriffs. Insgesamt eine starke Langrille, die ich Fans des Progressive Metal echt sehr ans Herz legen möchte. Antesten!!!
