Bereits im Dezember 2022 haben wir auf ‚metal-heads.de‘ über den Künstler Giannis Nakos und seiner Cover-Artwork-Schmiede REMEDY ART DESIGN berichtet und ein Interview mit ihm geführt. Wir haben seine Arbeit natürlich weiter verfolgt und seine hochkarätige Kunst sorgt weiter für Aufsehen.
Also hatten wir von ‚metal-heads.de‘ irgendwann irgendwie einen fixen Gedanken, wie es wäre, wenn er ein T-Shirt Design für uns machen würde. Aus dem Samen eines Gedankens wurde mehr und erblühte schließlich zu einem tollen Artwork, das nun auf unserem ‚metal-heads.de‘ T-Shirt verewigt wurde. Wir sind von dem Ergebnis überwältigt und sind unheimlich stolz darauf, dass wir uns geehrt fühlen dürfen ein originales individuelles Motiv von Remedy Art Design bekommen zu haben. Denn es war eine Premiere für ihn. Es war der erste Auftrag etwas für ein Metal-Magazin zu entwerfen.

Keine halben Sachen

Man muss sagen, dass die REMEDY ART DESIGN bei den Bands sehr beliebt und er eigentlich völlig ausgelastet ist. Trotzdem hat er unseren Auftrag nach einer eigentlich spontanen Idee dankbar angenommen, was wir wirklich wahnsinnig zu schätzen wissen. Nachdem das Motiv nun vor wenigen Wochen vollendet wurde, mussten wir es noch auf einem Shirt verewigen lassen. Da wir auch dabei keine halben Sachen machen und etwas qualitativ hochwertiges haben wollten, haben wir uns an Martin Sosna und seine Firma Merchendise-Service gewandt. Er hat mit seiner Firma bereits langjährige Erfahrung in diesem Bereich gesammelt. Wir hatten vor dieses supergeile Shirt in einer sehr kleinen Auflage von 100 Stück aufzulegen und werden es auf dem Rage Against Racism Festival anbieten, sofern die Produktion und Lieferung des Shirts bis dahin noch rechtzeitig erfolgen würde. Und wir können nun mit viel Freude verkünden…. Es hat geklappt!

Quasi in letzter Sekunde….

wurden die Shirts fertig. Für diese Punktlandung möchten wir uns von ‚metal-heads.de‘ bei Martin und seinem Team ganz ganz herzlich bedanken. Denn sie haben es trotz sehr engem Terminplan möglich gemacht unser Shirt quasi in einer „Nacht-Und-Nebel-Aktion“ dazwischenzuschieben, so dass wir unser Shirt am jetzigen Wochenende auf dem Rage-Against-Racism-Festival präsentieren können. Das Shirt wurde in einem hochwertigen Siebdruck-Verfahren hergestellt und würdigt somit das erstklassige umwerfende Motiv von REMEDY ART DESIGN mit einer bestechenden Qualität. Martin Sosna hat mir versichert, dass dieses Druckverfahren das Beste ist, was man bekommen kann. Und nachdem wir das Ergebnis nun in Händen halten, können wir das nur bestätigen. Ein absolut geiler Druck, der das wunderschöne Motiv von Remedy-Art-Design in all seinen Details und Farbenpracht zur Geltung bringt. Das Interview mit Künstler Giannis

MH: Hallo Giannis. Es ist schon eine Weile her (Dezember 2022), dass wir miteinander gesprochen haben. Du bist auch ein echter Metal-Fan. Du gestaltest nicht nur gerne Artworks für Bands, sondern hörst auch gerne Musik. Welche Band oder welches Album hat dich im Jahr 2023 besonders inspiriert und was hörst du gerade? Hast du dieses Jahr schon Konzerte besucht?

Giannis: Hey hey! Es ist in der Tat schon eine Weile her, und es läuft gut, um ehrlich zu sein! Dies ist bereits ein sehr arbeitsreiches Jahr und es sieht so aus, als würde es nicht langsamer werden. Kann mich nicht beklagen! Ich hoffe, euch geht es auch gut.

Ich bin in der Tat ein Nerd, wenn es um diese Musik geht. Ich konsumiere sie ständig. Ich füttere ständig meine CD- und Vinylsammlung und halte immer Ausschau nach neuen Underground-Acts, die meine Aufmerksamkeit erregen könnten. Also ja, ich lebe und atme Metal rund um die Uhr. Und mag es auch noch so klischeehaft klingen: Es ist die Wahrheit! 2023 hatte so viele tolle Veröffentlichungen. Ich mag das Album von AETHERIAN sehr, PERMUTATION und DEVANGELIC haben auch tolle Veröffentlichungen herausgebracht. IMMORTAL und MARDUK zusammen mit SORATHIAN DAWN, SOMNIATE, ON THORNS I LAY….ich könnte stundenlang weitermachen, 2023 hatte so tolle neue Musik herausgebracht.

Dieses Jahr war auch sehr produktiv, das neue VITRIOL, SKELETAL REMAINS, IHSAHN, das neue HAMFERO war sehr emotional, das MIDNIGHT-Album rockt wie die Hölle. Ich hatte kürzlich das Glück, sie live zu sehen. Wo wir gerade dabei sind, ich war in der Tat auf vielen Shows. MISERY INDEX, TERROR, EMPEROR, STICK YOUR GUNS, VIO-LENCE, AS I LAY DYING sind einige davon und es kommen noch viele weitere. Ich hoffe, dass mein Rücken mit meinem Bedürfnis nach Live-Musik mithalten kann.

MH: Der Sommer steht vor der Tür! Wo verbringst Du eigentlich Deinen Urlaub, wenn Du eigentlich schon in einem Urlaubsland lebst? Bleibst Du in Griechenland und fährst an die Küste oder zieht es Dich woanders hin?

Giannis: Die Wahrheit ist, dass ich in den Sommerferien lieber in Griechenland bleibe. Jeden August widme ich diese Zeit meiner Familie, also geht es nur um Strände und Entspannung. Abtauchen und so viel wie möglich entspannen für die neue Saison harter Arbeit, die vor mir liegt. Im Oktober werde ich allerdings nach Deutschland reisen, um IN FLAMES zu sehen! Also werde ich hoffentlich ein paar Freunde im Ausland sehen können.

MH: Wenn man Deine Website aufmerksam verfolgt, hat man den Eindruck, dass es mit REMEDY ART DESIGN weiter bergauf geht und mittlerweile international bekannt ist. Kannst Du das bestätigen? Würdest Du sagen, dass Du dich mit Deinem Label in der Szene etabliert hast?

Giannis: Oh wow, ich weiß gar nicht, was ich dazu sagen soll. Sicherlich habe ich in den letzten Jahren mehr und mehr für internationale Acts und Labels gearbeitet. Ich weiß wirklich nicht, ob „etabliert“ das richtige Wort ist, aber für Bands zu arbeiten, die ich gerne höre, ist etwas, das ich liebe und hoffentlich auch in Zukunft in größerem Umfang tun werde.

MH: Welches war die berühmteste Band, für die du Artwork gemacht hast?

Giannis: Um ehrlich zu sein, bin ich mir nicht sicher, wie man das messen kann. Vielleicht EMPEROR? Ich habe ein Poster für eine griechische Show gemacht und wurde von der Band darauf angesprochen. Sie wollten es für Merchandise-Artikel verwenden, aber auch Kunstdrucke anfertigen, und ich war sehr froh, dass es eine physische Umsetzung erfuhr. Das war auf jeden Fall ein Highlight!

MH: Würden Sie jemals eine Zusammenarbeit mit anderen Künstlern in Betracht ziehen, wenn die Arbeitsbelastung zu groß wird? Oder ziehen Sie es vor, die alleinige kreative Kontrolle über die Arbeit bei REMEDY ART DESIGN zu haben?

Giannis: Insgesamt ziehe ich es auf jeden Fall vor, die Kontrolle über die ganze Sache zu haben. Ich kann nicht wirklich sagen, was die Zukunft bringen wird, aber im Moment möchte ich mein Auge und meine Hand auf allem haben, was unter dem Label „Remedy Art Design“ herauskommt. Wenn das Arbeitspensum zu groß wird, würde das bedeuten, dass ich etwas richtig gemacht habe, so dass eine Zusammenarbeit mit einem anderen Künstler wahrscheinlich nicht in Frage käme, ha ha!

MH: Nun kam es zu unserer Zusammenarbeit bezüglich eines Artworks für ‚metal-heads.de‘. Kam diese Anfrage für Dich überraschend und was hast Du gedacht, als die Anfrage kam? War das Dein erster Auftrag dieser Art, d.h. ein Artwork für ein Metal-Magazin zu entwerfen?

Giannis: Das war auf jeden Fall eine tolle Überraschung! Mir gefiel die Idee, etwas zu machen, das ein bisschen anders ist als das Übliche. Ich weiß nicht, ob es am Ende so anders war, aber ich habe die Freiheit genossen, mich auszutoben. Ich kann mich nicht erinnern, ob ich schon einmal etwas Ähnliches für eine andere Zeitschrift gemacht habe, vielleicht war das tatsächlich mein Debüt, ha ha!

MH: Wie bist Du bei der Gestaltung vorgegangen? Was waren für Dich wichtige Kriterien oder Elemente, die das Bild enthalten sollte und welche Ausstrahlung sollte es vermitteln?

Giannis: Jedes Mal, wenn ich an einem neuen Projekt arbeite, versuche ich, in dessen Identität und Charakter einzutauchen. Ich möchte, dass jedes Stück, das ich kreiere, zur Ästhetik und Grundidee des Kunden/der Band passt. Dieses Mal wollte ich etwas, das „Power!“ schreit. Ihr wisst schon, alles, wofür Metal steht, aber ohne die typischen Totenköpfe usw. Etwas, das Bewegung und eine gewisse Dynamik mit sich bringt. Und ich denke, die Kunst hat all das. Das Geräusch eines Vorschlaghammers, der auf den Amboss schlägt, ist genau das, worum es geht.

MH: Genau das ist die Essenz dessen, was Metal ausmacht. Giannis hat es perfekt getroffen. Und von daher sind wir riesig stolz darauf, was Giannis für uns gezaubert hat. Aber ihr müsst euch noch gedulden, was die Betrachtung des Gesamtkunstwerks angeht. Die Redakteure von ‚metal-heads.de‘ haben das Shirt noch nicht gesehen. Denn es soll morgen als Überraschung zum Start des Rage Against Racism Festivals dort vorgestellt und übergeben werden. Morgen wird an dieser Stelle das fertige Shirt zu sehen werden, welches wir auch auf dem Festival für schlappe 20 Euro anbieten werden. Hier aber nochmal die Running Order des Festivals.

A premiere

Back in December 2022, we reported on the artist Giannis Nakos and his cover artwork studio REMEDY ART DESIGN on ‚metal-heads.de‘ and conducted an interview with him. We have of course continued to follow his work and his top-class art continues to cause a stir.
So at some point we at ‚metal-heads.de‘ somehow had a fixed thought about what it would be like if he did a T-shirt design for us. The seed of a thought grew into something more and finally blossomed into a great artwork that has now been immortalized on our ‚metal-heads.de‘ T-shirt. We are overwhelmed by the result and are incredibly proud that we are honored to have received an original individual motif from Remedy Art Design. Because it was a first for him. It was his first commission to design something for a metal magazine.

It has to be said that REMEDY ART DESIGN is very popular with the bands and he is actually working at full capacity. Nevertheless, he gratefully accepted our commission after a spontaneous idea, which we really appreciate. Now that the motif was completed a few weeks ago, we had to have it immortalized on a shirt. As we didn’t want to do things by halves and wanted something of high quality, we turned to Martin Sosna and his company Merchendise-Service. He has many years of experience with his company. We were planning to produce this super cool shirt in a very small edition of 100 pieces and will offer it at the Rage Against Racism Festival, provided that the shirt is produced and delivered in time. And we can now happily announce…. It worked!

Almost at the last minute….

the shirts were ready. We at ‚metal-heads.de‘ would like to thank Martin and his team for this precision landing. Despite a very tight schedule, they made it possible to push our shirt through in short time so that we can present our shirt this weekend at the Rage-Against-Racism-Festival. The shirt was produced using a high-quality screen printing process and thus honors the first-class, stunning motif by REMEDY ART DESIGN with an impressive quality. Martin Sosna assured me that this printing process is the best you can get. And now that we have the result in our hands, we can only confirm this. Interview with Giannis

MH: Hello Giannis. It’s been a while (December 2022) since we’ve spoken. You are also a real metal fan. Not only do you like designing artwork for bands, but you also like listening to music. Which band or album has particularly inspired you in 2023 and what are you currently listening to? Have you been to any concerts this year?

Giannis: Hey hey! It’s been a while indeed and it’s going well, to be honest! This is already a very busy year and it looks like it’s not going to slow down. Can’t complain! Hope you guys are doing well too.

I am indeed a nerd when it comes to this music. I consume it all the time. I’m constantly feeding my CD and vinyl collection and always on the lookout for new underground acts that might catch my attention. So yes, I live and breathe metal around the clock. And no matter how cliché it may sound: It’s the truth! 2023 had so many great releases. I really like AETHERIAN’s album, PERMUTATION and DEVANGELIC also put out great releases. IMMORTAL and MARDUK along with SORATHIAN DAWN, SOMNIATE, ON THORNS I LAY….I could go on for hours, 2023 had such great new music coming out.

This year has also been very productive, the new VITRIOL, SKELETAL REMAINS, IHSAHN, the new HAMFERO was very emotional, the MIDNIGHT album rocks like hell. I was lucky enough to see them live recently. Speaking of which, I’ve actually been to a lot of shows. MISERY INDEX, TERROR, EMPEROR, STICK YOUR GUNS, VIO-LENCE, AS I LAY DYING are some of them and there are many more to come. I hope my back can keep up with my need for live music.

MH: Summer is just around the corner! Where do you actually spend your vacation if you already live in a vacation destination? Are you staying in Greece and going to the coast or are you going somewhere else?

Giannis: The truth is that I prefer to stay in Greece during the summer vacation. Every August I dedicate this time to my family, so it’s all about beaches and relaxation. Diving off and relaxing as much as possible for the new season of hard work that lies ahead of me. However, in October I will be traveling to Germany to see IN FLAMES! So hopefully I’ll be able to see some friends abroad.

MH: If we follow your website closely, we get the impression that REMEDY ART DESIGN is continuing to grow and is now internationally renowned. Can you confirm this? Would you say that you have established yourself in the scene with your label?

Giannis: Oh wow, I don’t even know what to say about that. I’ve certainly been working more and more for international acts and labels over the last few years. I really don’t know if „established“ is the right word, but working for bands I enjoy listening to is something I love and hope to do more of in the future.

MH: What was the most famous band you’ve done artwork for?

Giannis: To be honest, I’m not sure how to measure that. Maybe EMPEROR? I made a poster for a Greek show and was approached by the band. They wanted to use it for merchandise but also make art prints, and I was very happy that it got a physical realization. That was definitely a highlight!

MH: Would you ever consider collaborating with other artists if the workload becomes too much? Or do you prefer to have sole creative control over the work at REMEDY ART DESIGN?

Giannis: Overall, I definitely prefer to be in control of the whole thing. I can’t really say what the future will bring, but for now I want to have my eye and hand on everything that comes out under the Remedy Art Design label. If the workload gets too big, it would mean I’ve done something right, so working with another artist would probably be out of the question, ha ha!

MH: Now it came to our collaboration regarding an artwork for ‚metal-heads.de‘. Did this request come as a surprise to you and what did you think when the request came? Was this your first commission of this kind, i.e. to design an artwork for a metal magazine?

Giannis: It was definitely a great surprise! I liked the idea of doing something a bit different from the usual. I don’t know if it ended up being that different, but I enjoyed the freedom to let off steam. I can’t remember if I’ve done anything similar for another magazine before, so maybe this was actually my debut, ha ha!

MH: How did you approach the design? What were important criteria or elements for you that the picture should contain and what aura should it convey?

Giannis: Every time I work on a new project, I try to immerse myself in its identity and character. I want every piece I create to fit the aesthetic and basic idea of the client/band. This time I wanted something that screams „Power!“. You know, everything that metal stands for, but without the typical skulls etc. Something that has movement and a certain dynamic to it. And I think art has all that. The sound of a sledgehammer hitting the anvil is exactly what it’s all about.

MH: That’s the essence of what metal is all about. Giannis has captured it perfectly. And that’s why we’re so proud of what Giannis has conjured up for us. But you’ll have to be patient when it comes to seeing the complete work of art. The editors of ‚metal-heads.de‘ have not yet seen the shirt. It will be presented and handed over tomorrow as a surprise at the start of the Rage Against Racism Festival. Tomorrow you will be able to see the finished shirt here, which we will also be offering at the festival for a modest 20 euros. But here again the running order of the festival.

Musik und visuelle Kunst

gehen oft Hand in Hand. Cover Artworks zieren die Hüllen der muikalischen Medien, ob es nun Schallplatten, CD’s oder moderne Earbooks sind. Dazu kommen noch Merchandise Artikel in jeglicher Form. Ein Künstler, der seit einige Zeit mit aufregenden Artworks immer mehr von sich reden macht, ist Giannis Nakos. Er hat sich mit REMEDY ART DESIGN (Facebook) selbstständig gemacht.

Es ist sehr interessant, dass Künstler teilweise sehr unterschiedlich an ihre Werke herangehen. Wir von ‚metal-heads.de‘ beleuchten auch mal gerne abseits der Bands als Hauptakteure die anderen Bereiche des Musikbusiness, ohne die ebenfalls nichts laufen würde. Also freut Euch auf unser Interview mit Giannis Nakos von REMEDY ART DESIGN.

MH: Hallo Giannis. Viele Leute werden dich nicht unter deinem richtigen Namen kennen. Aber es könnte sein, dass einige REMEDY ART DESIGN kennen. Aber es ist sicher, dass viele Leute dich indirekt kennen, weil sie deine Arbeiten gesehen haben, denn viele Cover-Artworks von Metal- und Rock-Alben sind mittlerweile aus deiner kreativen Kunst entstanden.

Das Bild steht im Focus

Giannis: Hallo! Danke, dass ich in Eurem webzine dabei sein darf!

Das stimmt, mein Name ist nicht der erste, den man sieht, denn in meiner Branche steht das Bild an erster Stelle, und mit „Bild“ meine ich natürlich meine Arbeit. Es ist ein bisschen seltsam, aber ja, Giannis ist mein Name! Ich ziehe es aber vor, dass jeder meine Kunst kennt, unabhängig von meinem „Namen“!

Dunkle Anziehungskraft

MH: Wann hast du dein Talent zum Malen und Zeichnen entdeckt? Wie hat es bei dir angefangen?

Giannis: Auf diese Frage gibt es eigentlich eine doppelte Antwort: Ich erinnere mich, dass meine Eltern mich in eine örtliche Kunstschule mitnahmen, als ich 7 Jahre alt war. Nichts Besonderes, nur um meine Nachmittage kreativ zu verbringen und die Grundlagen des Zeichnens zu lernen. Erst als ich ein paar Jahre später mit Metal in Berührung kam, habe ich angefangen, mich mehr mit der künstlerischen Seite der Dinge zu beschäftigen. Diese dunklen und geheimnisvollen Bilder haben mich immer angezogen. Der Einfluss, den sie auf mich hatten, hat mich dazu gebracht, Kunst in diesem Stil und dieser Ästhetik zu machen.

MH: Hast Du Kunst studiert? Wenn ja, wo?

Giannis: Ich habe Grafikdesign an einer öffentlichen Schule hier in Athen, Griechenland, studiert. Der Schwerpunkt lag allerdings auf der Software und dem technischen Aspekt der Dinge. Einige Kurse umfassten auch Kunstgeschichte und Fotografie, aber es war mein eigenes Interesse an diesem Bereich, das mich dahin brachte, wo ich heute bin. Ich habe die Arbeiten vieler Künstler studiert, vor allem die, die diese Art von Arbeit gemacht haben. Dan Seagrave, Seth Siro Anton, Travis Smith und unzählige andere. Ihre vielfältigen und einzigartigen Stile haben mich definitiv beeinflusst.

Gründung von REMEDY ART DESIGN

MH: Wann hast Du Dein eigenes Unternehmen REMEDY ART DESIGN gegründet? Warst Du vorher schon woanders angestellt?

Giannis: Ich habe 19 Jahre lang in einer Druckerei gearbeitet, so dass ich einige Erfahrungen im technischen Bereich sammeln konnte. Eine Erfahrung, die sich in der Zukunft als hilfreich erwiesen hat. Etwa 2006 habe ich angefangen, Kunst für Bands zu machen. Ich wollte mir ein Portfolio aufbauen, also habe ich mich an Bands aus der lokalen Szene gewandt, um mir einen Namen zu machen. Anfangs waren die Dinge natürlich viel lockerer und unprofessioneller. Aber mit der Zeit habe ich es geschafft, meine Arbeit etwas zu verbessern und etwas Aufmerksamkeit zu erregen. Es hat sicherlich einige Zeit gedauert, bis ich ein Niveau erreicht hatte, bei dem ich mich in dem, was ich tue, sicherer fühlte.

Künstlerische Bandbreite

MH: Entwirfst du ausschließlich Cover für Rock- und Metalbands oder erstreckt sich deine Arbeit auch auf andere Bereiche? Kann man deine Arbeiten auch als Privatperson kaufen? Gibt es gedruckte Poster von deinen Bildern?

Giannis: Ich entwerfe alles, worum ich gebeten werde, wenn ich das Gefühl habe, dass es zu meinem Stil passt und mir gefällt. Ich bin bereit, alles zu entwerfen, ein Buchcover, ein Filmplakat usw., aber es muss auf jeden Fall etwas sein, das zu meinem Stil passt.

Was den anderen Teil der Frage betrifft… Ich muss wirklich etwas unternehmen. Irgendwann einen E-Store oder so etwas einrichten, denn ich werde häufig nach Drucken gefragt. Ich habe von Zeit zu Zeit welche gemacht und habe einige auf Lager, aber ich habe keine offizielle Seite, um sie zu verkaufen. Irgendwann wird das aber passieren, denke ich, ha ha!

Lieblingsbilder

MH: Wie viele Cover hast du entworfen? Hast du irgendwelche persönlichen Favoriten aus deiner bisherigen Schaffensperiode?

Giannis: Oh, schwer zu sagen! Ich habe schon mit über 200 Bands gearbeitet. Nicht jede Arbeit ist ein Cover, es kann auch ein Logo oder ein Shirt-Design sein, aber ja, ich habe bis jetzt viele, viele Arbeiten gemacht. Zu meinen Favoriten gehören das Cover für Evergreys „The Atlantic“, das neue Cover für Anova Skyways „Reset“, die neuesten Cover für Xenobiotic, Hexed, Ashen und Maladie. Ich könnte ewig so weitermachen, also werde ich mich erst einmal auf diese beschränken.

MH: Gibt es eine thematische Richtung, die dir besonders gut gefällt?

Giannis: Ich mag es, an so vielen verschiedenen Stilen und Themen zu arbeiten, aber ich bin etwas mehr in alles verliebt, was mit Death Metal zu tun hat. Düstere Landschaften und eine düstere Atmosphäre sind das, was ich gerne erschaffe. Alles, was mit Totenköpfen, verbrannter Erde usw. zu tun hat. Man kann sehr kreativ mit dem Thema umgehen. Also wäre das meine Vorliebe. Ich habe sogar ein paar unveröffentlichte Werke in dieser Richtung, die bald veröffentlicht werden sollen.

Künstlerische Freiheit

MH: Wie gehst Du an einen solchen Auftrag heran? Weißt Du im Voraus, wie die Musik klingen wird, oder bekommst Du die Texte? Worauf stützt Du Dich bei Deinem Entwurf? Gibt es vielleicht sogar detaillierte Vorgaben, wie es auszusehen hat?

Giannis: Gute Frage! Detaillierte Vorgaben sind das Letzte, was ich für den Anfang möchte. Ich finde es sehr einschränkend, nach den Ideen von jemand anderem zu arbeiten. Meine Arbeit basiert auf künstlerischer Freiheit, daher verlange ich von den Musikern normalerweise die Freiheit, das zu tun, was ich am besten kann, immer in Übereinstimmung mit dem Musikgenre, ihren Texten, einem Arbeitstitel oder sogar einer sehr allgemeinen Idee.

In manchen Fällen gibt es keine fertige Musik und man sagt mir, dass es hilfreich ist, wenn die Kunst fertig ist, weil es die Kreativität fördert. Um ehrlich zu sein, finde ich das sehr schmeichelhaft, und natürlich bin ich immer bereit, mit einem Minimum an Informationen in meinem Kopf an einem Albumcover zu arbeiten. Man muss eine Herausforderung lieben!

MH: Wie lange arbeitest Du im Durchschnitt an einem Kunstwerk?

Giannis: Das hängt von der Stimmung, der Art der Kunst und allen möglichen anderen Faktoren ab. Sicherlich ist die Zeit nicht immer auf meiner Seite, also würde ich sagen, dass es im Durchschnitt ein oder zwei Wochen von dem Tag an dauert, an dem ich es zum ersten Mal in die Hände bekomme. Aber es gibt auch Zeiten, in denen es länger dauert oder sogar noch früher als das.

MH: Mit welchen Programmen und Utensilien arbeitest du bei der Erstellung deiner Bilder?

Giannis: Ich arbeite ausschließlich mit Photoshop. Das ist immer meine erste Wahl. Als Grafiktablet nutze ich XPpen Pro.

MH: Hast du einen Künstler, den du schätzt oder der dich inspiriert hat?

Giannis: Ahh, da gibt es eine Menge davon. Wie bereits erwähnt, Travis Smith, Dan Seagrave, Seth Siro, Eliran Kantor, Adrian Smith, Dan Goldsworthy, mein Freund Gary Ronaldson, meine griechischen Freunde John Toussas, Manthos Stergiou, Vaggelis Petikas, Par Olofsson und unzählige andere. Ich liebe es, zu sehen, wie sie immer wieder mit brillanten Ideen aufwarten, und ich fühle mich sehr inspiriert!

MH: Welche Bands sind deine musikalischen Favoriten? Hörst du beim Zeichnen Musik oder bevorzugst du eine ruhige Atmosphäre?

Giannis: Eigentlich beides. Es gibt Zeiten, in denen ich die brutalsten Sachen höre, Bands wie Putridity oder Gorgasm, dann wieder abenteuerliche Sachen wie Disillusion und dann gibt es Jazz oder Soundtracks. Es hängt alles von der Stimmung oder sogar von der Kunst ab und von den Vibes, die ich erzeugen möchte.

MH: Hast du derzeit Kapazitäten und kannst Aufträge annehmen oder bist du ausgebucht?

Giannis: Für die nächsten Monate bin ich auf jeden Fall ausgebucht, aber ich bin immer offen für Gespräche über zukünftige Kunstprojekte. Zum Glück gibt es immer noch Bands, die sich für Kunst interessieren, die von Menschen geschaffen wurde.

Ein Sammler

MH: Ich habe auf einem Deiner Fotos auf Facebook im Hintergrund gesehen, dass du eine beachtliche Anzahl von CDs hast. Hast Du einen Überblick wieviele es sind? Hast Du auch Vinyls?

Giannis: Ich liebe meine Sammlung und ich versuche, sie auf dem neuesten Stand zu halten, also ja, CDs, Vinyl, Kassetten, Boxsets. Es ist alles da! Im Vergleich zu anderen Sammlern, die ich kenne, habe ich nicht viel, etwa 2300+ Stück laut Discogs, aber ich schätze sie. Ich sammle schon seit vielen Jahren, aber ich entscheide mich immer für Sachen, die ich wirklich höre, anstatt nur eine große Anzahl von Stücken zu besitzen.

MH: Hast Du die Tattoos auf Deinem Körper selbst entworfen? Hast du eventuell auch ein eigenes Tattoo-Studio?

Giannis: Ich besitze kein Tattoo-Studio, obwohl das etwas wäre, das mich interessieren würde, wenn ich mich jetzt nicht für die Album-Kunst entschieden hätte. Ich habe allerdings einige meiner Tattoos entworfen. Einige wirklich schlechte, ha ha!

gehen oft Hand in Hand. Cover Artworks zieren die Hüllen der muikalischen Medien, ob es nun Schallplatten, CD’s oder moderne Earbooks sind. Dazu kommen noch Merchandise Artikel in jeglicher Form. Ein Künstler, der seit einige Zeit mit aufregenden Artworks immer mehr von sich reden macht, ist Giannis Nakos. Er hat sich mit REMEDY ART DESIGN (Facebook) selbstständig gemacht.

Es ist sehr interessant, dass Künstler teilweise sehr unterschiedlich an ihre Werke herangehen. Wir von ‚metal-heads.de‘ beleuchten auch mal gerne abseits der Bands als Hauptakteure die anderen Bereiche des Musikbusiness, ohne die ebenfalls nichts laufen würde. Also freut Euch auf unser Interview mit Giannis Nakos von REMEDY ART DESIGN.

MH: Hello Giannis. Many people will not know you by your real name. But it could be that some know REMEDY ART DESIGN. But it is sure that many people know you indirectly, because they have seen your art. Many cover artworks of metal and rock albums have sprung from your creativity

The image is the focus

Giannis: Hi! Thanks for having me on your e-mag!

That is true, my name is not the first you see since in my line of work it’s the image that comes first and by „image“ I mean my work of course. It’s kind of odd but yeah, Giannis is my name! It’s much prefered though that anyone know my art no matter the „name“!

MH: When did you discover your talent for painting and drawing? How did it start for you?

Giannis: That question has a 2 sided answer actually: I remember my parents taking me to a local art school when I was 7. Nothing much, just to spend my afternoons creatively and to learn the basics of drawing. It wasn’t until I got into metal a few years later that I started exploring the artistic side of things more though. I was always drawn by those dark and mysterious images. The impact they had on me drove me to start doing art on that style and aesthetics.

MH: Did you study art? If it is, where was that?

Giannis: I studied Graphic Design at a public School, here in Athens, Greece. It was mostly focused on the software and the technical aspect of things though. Some courses included Art History and Photography but it was my own interest in the field that brought me to where I am today. I studied the work of so many artists, especially the ones that did this kind of job. Dan Seagrave, Seth Siro Anton, Travis Smith and countless others. Their diverse and unique styles definitely had an affect on me.

MH: When did you start your own business REMEDY ART DESIGN? Were you employed somewhere else before?

Giannis: I was working in a printing company for 19 years so I gained some experience on the technical field. Experience that proved to be helpful in the future. I started doing art for bands around 2006. I wanted to create some portfolio so I was reaching out to bands from the local scene in order to start building my name. At first things were a lot more loose and unproffesional of course. But in time I managed to somewhat improve my work and draw some attention. It surely too some time to get to a level where I felt more confident in what I do.

Artistic range

MH: Do you exclusively design covers for rock and metal bands or does your work extend to other areas as well? Is it possible to buy your work as a private person? Are there printed posters of your images?

Giannis: I design whatever I’m asked if I feel that it fits my style and is to my liking. I’d be down to design anything, a book cover, a movie poster, etc but it surely has to be something within the spectrum of my style.

As for the other part of the question…I really need to do something about this. Make an e-store or something at some point as I’m frequently asked for prints. I’ve made some from time to time and I have some stored but don’t have an official page to sell them. It will happen eventually I guess though ha ha!

Favorite images

MH: How many covers have you designed? Do you have any personal favorites from your creative period so far?

Giannis: Oh, tough one! I’ve worked with over 200 bands already. Not all the work is cover art, might be logo work or a shirt design but yeah, I have done lots and lots of work until now. Some of my favourites include the cover art for Evergrey’s “The Atlantic”, the new one I did for Anova Skyway’s “Reset”, the latest cover arts for Xenobiotic, Hexed, Ashen and Maladie. I could go on forever so I’ll stick to these for now.

MH: : Is there a thematic direction that you particularly like more than others?

Giannis: I like working on so many different styles and themes but I’m slightly more in love with anything death metal oriented. Bleak landscapes and grim atmosphere is what I like to create. Anything with skulls, scortched earth, etc. You can get very creative with the topic so that would be my preference. In fact I have a few unpublished pieces in that vein that are soon to be revealed.

Artistic freedom

MH: How do you approach such an assignment? Do you know in advance what the music will sound like or do you get the lyrics? What do you base your design on? Are there maybe even detailed specifications how it has to look like?

Giannis: Good question! The detailed specifications is the last thing I want for starters.  I find it very limiting to work around someone else’s idea. I base my work on artistic freedom so what I usually ask from the musicians is the freedom to do what I know best, always according to the music genre, their lyrics, a working title or even a very general idea.

In some occasions there’s no music ready and and I’m told that it helps to have the art finished because it helps boost the creativity. I find that very flattering to be honest and of course I’m always ready to work on an album cover with minimum info in my head. Gotta love a challenge!

MH: : How long do you work on an artwork on average?

Giannis: It depends on the mood, the type of art and all sorts of different factors. Surely time is not always on my side so I’d say one or two weeks from the day I’ll firstly get my hands on it. But there’s also times it took longer or even sooner than that.er als das.

MH: Which programs and utensils do you work with to create your pictures?

Giannis: I work on Photoshop exclusively. It’s always my no 1 preference. I use XPpen Pro as my graphics tablet.

MH: : Do you have an artist you appreciate or who has inspired you?

Giannis: Ahh there’s tons of them. Like mentioned earlier, Travis Smith, Dan Seagrave, Seth Siro, Eliran Kantor, Adrian Smith, Dan Goldsworthy, my friend Gary Ronaldson, my greek pals John Toussas, Manthos Stergiou, Vaggelis Petikas, Par Olofsson and countless others. I love seeing them come up with brilliant ideas all the time and I feel very inspired!

MH: : What bands are your favorites musically? Do you listen to music while drawing or do you prefer a quiet atmosphere?

Giannis: Both actually. There’s times I’m blasting the most brutal tunes, bands like Putridity or Gorgasm, others I’m more into more adventurous stuff like Disillusion  and then there’s jazz or soundtracks. It all depends on the mood or even the art itseld and the vibes I want to get.

MH: Do you currently have capacity and can accept orders or are you booked up?

Giannis: I’m booked up for the next couple of months for sure but I’m always open to discussing future art projects. Thankfuly there’s still bands that go after art created by humans.

A collector

MH: : I saw at one of your photos on Facebook in the background that you have a considerable number of CD’s. Do you know how many? Do you also have vinyls?

Giannis: I love my collection and I try to keep it updated so yeah, cds, vinyl, cassettes, boxsets. It’s all there! I don’t have much compared to other collectors I know, around 2300+ pieces according to Discogs, but I cherish it. Have been collecting for so many years but I’m always opting for stuff I really listen to rather than just have large numbers of items.

MH: Did you design the tattoos on your body yourself? Do you possibly also have your own tattoo studio?

Giannis: I don’t own a tattoo studio though that would be something I’d be interesting in if I wasn’t into the album art thingy. I have designed some of my tattoos though. Some really bad ones ha ha!
