Nicklas Sonne (Facebook/Homepage) hat sich abseits seiner Hauptband DEFECTO mit seinem eigenen Projekt beschäftigt. Das erste Ergebnis dieser Selbsterfahrung ist das Album „Resonance“ (Review) und ist seit heute (11.11.’22) erhältlich. Und wir können nur jedem dringend empfehlen, sich dieses Album von diesem Ausnahmemusiker anzuhören. Erste Resonanzen

MH: Hallo Nicklas! Schön, dass du dir die Zeit genommen hast, mit uns über dich als Person und Musiker, sowie über dein neues Album „Resonance“ zu sprechen. Die Veröffentlichung des Albums ist nun ein paar Tage her. Auf ‚metal-heads.de‘ wurde das Album sehr gut aufgenommen. Wie waren die Reaktionen bis jetzt?

NS: Hey Leute, danke, dass ihr euch die Zeit genommen habt, euch mit meinem Album zu beschäftigen, und für das fantastische Review, das ihr diesem gegeben habt!
Die Reaktionen auf die Songs waren bisher überwältigend. Ich habe so viele nette Kommentare und Nachrichten erhalten, dass ich vor Freude ständig jubelnd die Arme in den Himmel recken könnte. Den Leuten scheint wirklich zu gefallen, was ich geschaffen habe, und bisher tun das auch die Kritiker, was natürlich wunderbar ist!

Vielseitigkeit ist Trumpf

MH: Bevor wir näher auf das Album und den Hintergrund eingehen, lass uns mehr über dich als Künstler sprechen. Eigentlich bist du der Sänger und Gitarrist der Band DEFECTO. Du hast auch einige Coversongs gemacht. Jetzt hast du ein Soloprojekt. Ich habe auch gesehen, dass du mit einem Sinfonieorchester aufgetreten bist. Das ist eine ganz andere Erfahrung als Sänger.
Wie war das für dich? Wo bist du sonst noch musikalisch vertreten?

NS: Oh Mann, ich bewege mich die ganze Zeit in so viele Richtungen. Ich liebe einfach gute Musik, ich liebe die Kreativität dahinter und die Gefühle, die ich damit ausdrücken kann. Es war eine tolle Erfahrung, mit einem Symphonieorchester zu singen, und ich werde das auf jeden Fall wieder tun, wenn sich die Gelegenheit ergibt.

Ich liebe es, verschiedene Arten von Covers zu machen, um mich als Sängerin in verschiedenen Genres herauszufordern, das macht Spaß und ist lehrreich. Ich habe auch das Hauptthema des neuesten Pokemon-Films auf Netflix auf Dänisch gesungen. Wenn die richtige Zeit kommt, werde ich auch versuchen, ein Musical zu machen, das würde Spaß machen!

MH: Würdest du dich als neugierigen und vielseitigen Menschen beschreiben?

NS: Sehr. Ich habe keine Genregrenzen und bin für so ziemlich alles offen, solange es Spaß macht und die Musik/das Projekt gut ist.

Alles ist möglich

MH: Was ist das Verrückteste, was du je als Musiker gemacht hast?

NS: Das Verrückteste war wohl, als ich mir auf der Bühne das Bein brach und es selbst wieder notdürftig zusammenflickte. Den Sanitätern sagte ich, dass sie warten sollen, bis unsere Show vorbei sei. Ich saß auf der Bühne, in der einen Hand das Mikrofon, in der anderen einen Beutel mit gefrorenem Eis auf meinem Knie.

Wir setzten die Tournee am nächsten Tag, am übernächsten Tag und am dritten Tag fort. 14 Tage später spielten wir mit Metallica, und ich konnte nicht wirklich laufen, also nahm ich vorher Schmerzmittel und humpelte durch die größte und wichtigste Show meines Lebens.

MH: Gibt es Herausforderungen im Bereich der Musik, die du nicht angehen würdest, oder bist du ein Typ, der sagt: „Alles ist möglich!“ ?

NS: Alles ist möglich!!!!

MH: Ich habe vor einiger Zeit mit deinem Bandkollegen Frederik gesprochen. Er hat auch an einem Soloprojekt namens SUMR gearbeitet. Müssen wir uns Sorgen um DEFECTO machen?

NS: Überhaupt nicht! Wir haben Defecto vor 12 Jahren gegründet und haben viele tolle Sachen zusammen gemacht. Es ist eine natürliche kleine Pause, in der die Hauptsongwriter (Ich und Frederik) einige andere kreative Dinge hatten, die wir loswerden mussten und die nicht in Defecto passten.
Ich hatte einige sehr persönliche Songs und das Bedürfnis, ein Album ganz allein zu machen, ohne dass jemand etwas in Frage stellt, und Frederik hatte ein ganz anderes Genre, mit dem er experimentieren wollte.
Ein neues Defecto-Album ist aber definitiv in Planung!

Ich mache keinen Metal, den man jeden Tag hört!

MH: Frederiks Projekt hat einen sehr modernen Sound und geht neue Wege. Aufgrund deiner gesanglichen Fähigkeiten hätte Dein Album ein Melodic Death Metal-Album werden können. Siehe z.B. auch die letzten Singles von DEFECTO, die sehr düster und hart wurden. Warum hast Du dich also für Heavy Metal entschieden, zumal es um dunkle, ernste Themen geht?

NS: Ich tue das, was ich gerne tue, und das lässt sich nicht ändern. Ich mache kein Metal-Genre, das man jeden Tag hört, sondern ich habe definitiv meine eigene Note darin. Ich bin kein Fan des neueren Metals, der auf den Markt kommt, ich denke, er ist zu sehr auf Computer getrimmt und mit zu vielen Takes versehen, gekrönt von kleinen Jungs, die nicht schreien, und ich denke nicht, dass er noch bahnbrechend ist.
Die letzten Defecto-Songs waren in der Tat sehr düster, ich glaube, es war eine demokratische Zusammenarbeit, weil wir alle in der Band die aktuelle Situation mit Covid und Kriegen hassten.

MH: Wann hattest du die Idee, ein Soloprojekt zu machen?

NS: Vor vielen Jahren. Es ist eine längst überfällige Sache, die einfach in meinen und Defectos Zeitplan gepasst hat. Ich hatte schon immer den Drang, neben Defecto und anderen Projekten „mein eigenes Ding zu machen“. Ich mag es, die Kontrolle zu haben und alles selbst zu machen, das gibt mir ein gutes Gefühl.

Eine persönliche Sache

MH: „Resonance“ ist ein sehr persönliches Album geworden, auf dem du nicht nur gesellschaftliche Themen ansprichst, die dir persönlich wichtig sind, sondern auch Erfahrungen, die dir selbst widerfahren sind und dich geprägt haben. Der Song „Misery“ zum Beispiel handelt von einem prägenden Erlebnis in Ihrer Kindheit, als es einen Streit zwischen Ihren Eltern gab. Du beschreibst in einigen Songs, dass du durch sehr schwierige und harte Zeiten gehen musstest. Ist die Musik und insbesondere dieses Album auch eine Art Selbsttherapie?

NS: Auf jeden Fall, es ist extrem therapeutisch. Es ermöglicht mir, Dinge laut auszusprechen und sie aus meinem System herauszuholen. Ich habe Musik und ihre Kreativität schon immer genutzt, um meine Gedanken zu kontrollieren und aus der Welt zu verschwinden, wenn es weh tat.
In Resonance könnte ich sogar noch tiefer eintauchen, denn es ist meine ganz eigene Musik.

Depression als Volkskrankheit?

MH: Was sind Deine Erfahrungen? Glaubst Du, dass die Zahl der Menschen mit Depressionen zugenommen hat? Wenn ja, was könnte der Grund dafür sein?

NS: Die Menschen verlangen immer mehr von den Menschen. Es gibt immer mehr Regeln für alles: Du darfst dies nicht sagen, du darfst jenes nicht sagen. Egal was du tust, tust du etwas, wofür du dich schlecht fühlen musst. Die Leute auf Social Media zeigen ihr perfektes Leben mit einer Million Schönheitsfiltern und ihrem breiten Lächeln. All diese perfekten, unrealistischen Dinge, die jeder anstrebt, machen den Sturz noch schwerer, wenn die Leute merken, dass es unwirklich und unmöglich ist.
Das ist meine Meinung dazu, warum Depressionen häufiger geworden sind. Depressionen werden auch mehr „respektiert“ als früher, wie viele andere psychologische Dinge auch, was ich für wichtig halte.

MH: Gibt es einen bestimmten Song, eine Band oder ein Album, das Ihnen in schweren Zeiten Kraft gegeben hat?

NS: Nicht wirklich! Das einzige, was mir Kraft gibt, ist etwas selbst zu machen.

Eine Gitarre als Glücksfaktor

MH: Auf dem Cover ist ein Kind zu sehen, das zwischen zwei Welten hin und her läuft, einer wunderschönen paradiesischen Welt und einer toten Einöde. Man könnte es auch Himmel und Hölle nennen. Nenne mir doch bitte ein Beispiel für ein schönes Erlebnis aus Deiner Kindheit oder Jugend, an das Du Dich heute noch gerne erinnerst!

NS: Ich erinnere mich daran, wie ich meine erste Gitarre bekam. Es war eine billige BC Rich Warlock. Eine schreckliche Gitarre, aber ich war glücklich, und es war meine eigene! Von diesem Tag an habe ich nicht mehr aufgehört zu spielen.

Der Vinylboom

MH: Warum hast Du „Resonance“ nur auf Vinyl und nicht auf CD veröffentlicht? Wie viele Vinyls wurden von der ersten Auflage gepresst?

NS: 200 Vinyls in der ersten Auflage! (Anm. d. V.: Sollte man sich ranhalten. Sind bestimmt bald vergriffen.)
Ich wollte CD’s haben, aber das Interesse an CD’s ist nicht groß und ich wollte das Geld sparen und nur die Vinyls haben, da wir vor allem in Dänemark heutzutage einen großen Vinylboom erleben.
Wenn ich ein bisschen weiter bin und Mitarbeiter in Form einer Booking-Agentur habe und mehr aus Dänemark herausholen kann, werde ich CDs machen lassen.

Ein Video mit Spaßfaktor

MH: Das Video zum Song „Spit Out Your Pride“ ist trotz seiner kritischen Aussage eher lustig und überdreht. Ich habe auch Musiker von DEFECTO gesehen. Es sieht so aus, als hättet ihr eine Menge Spaß gehabt. Waren die Schauspieler alle persönliche Bekannte von euch? Wie war der Videodreh? Habt ihr nach den Dreharbeiten eine große Party gefeiert?

NS: Ich habe Fans und Follower eingeladen, mit einer Vorankündigung von 4 Tagen in mein Studio zu kommen. Es wurden 25 Personen ausgewählt, von denen ich nur einige kannte, z.B. aus Shows oder von Facebook.
Das Shooting hat so viel Spaß gemacht! Ich hatte alles sorgfältig geplant, so dass es sehr effektiv war, so dass wir etwa 6 Stunden lang gedreht haben. Ich habe das Video am Tag danach geschnitten und das war’s!
Wir haben keine Party gefeiert, aber ich habe alle Leute, die gekommen waren, eingeladen, zu bleiben, bis wir fertig waren, und sie zu mir ins Studio eingeladen, um sich den ganzen Song anzuhören. Dann haben wir ein Glas Wein, Soda oder irgendwas getrunken und das war’s.
Gute Leute! Ich bin sehr dankbar!

MH: Das Musikgeschäft kann sehr hart sein und ist manchmal ein Haifischbecken. Hast du Erfahrungen mit Leuten im Musikgeschäft gemacht, die arrogant und ohne Einfühlungsvermögen gehandelt haben?

NS: Ja, mehrere Male. Vor allem Leute, die wissen, dass sie in einer Machtposition sind. Das ist frustrierend.

Zukunftsmusik

MH: Wirst Du mit Deinem Album auf Tour gehen?

NS: Es gibt Pläne in Dänemark für das Frühjahr, und ich bin im Gespräch mit einigen Bookern in Europa. Ich hoffe, dass ich ein paar Festivalshows und ein paar Supportshows im Jahr 2023 in Europa spielen kann, dann ein neues Album herausbringe und später ein paar eigene Shows in Europa spielen. Das ist es, worauf ich zumindest hinarbeite.

MH: Möchtest du uns verraten, welche musikalischen Dinge für das nächste Jahr geplant sind?

NS: Ich werde mich ein wenig auf mein Soloprojekt konzentrieren. Dann werde ich mich auf ein neues Defecto konzentrieren, vielleicht etwas von Hank Shermans Soloprojekt (Mercyful Fate), wo ich singe, und dann werde ich mich auf mein Studio konzentrieren, wo ich für andere Bands produziere, mische und mastere.

First resonances

MH: Hello Nicklas! Nice that you took the time to talk to us about you as a person and musician, as well as about your new album „Resonance“. The release of the album is now a few days ago. At ‚metal-heads.de‘ the album was received very well. How were the reactions so far?

NS: Hey guys, thanks for taking your time focusing on my album, and for the fantastic review you gave it!

The reactions on the songs so far have been overwhelming. I have received so many kind comments and messages, that my arms are stuck up in the air of excitement. People seem to really enjoy what I’ve created and so far, so do the reviewers, which is always nice!

Versatility is the key

MH: Before we go into more detail about the album and the background, let’s talk more about you as an artist. Actually you are the singer and guitarist of the band DEFECTO. You have also done some cover songs. Now you have a solo project. I also saw that you performed with a symphony orchestra. That is a completely different experience as a singer.

How was that for you? Where else are you represented musically?

NS: Oh man I’m moving so many directions all the time. I simply love good music, i love the creativity behind it and the feelings I can express through it. It was an amazing experience to sing with a symphony orchestra, and something I will definitely do again, should the occasion rise. I love doing different kinds of covers to challenge myself as a singer in different genres, it’s fun and teaching. I’ve also sung the main theme of the newest Pokemon movie on Netflix in Danish. If the right time comes I’ll also be trying to do a musical, this would be fun!

Anything is possible

MH: Would you describe yourself as a curious and versatile person? What is the craziest thing you have ever done as a musician?

NS: Very. I don’t have genre boundaries and I’m open to pretty much anything, as long it’s fun and the music/project is good.

The craziest thing must’ve been when I broke my leg on stage, bend it back in place myself and told the medics to wait until our show was done. I was sitting on the stage with the mic in one hand, and bag of frozen ice on my knee in the other. We continued the tour the day after, 2 days after and 3 days after. 14 days later we played with Metallica, and I couldn’t really walk, so I took painkillers prior and was limping around through the biggest and most important show of my life.

MH: Are there challenges in the field of music you wouldn’t tackle, or are you a guy who says : „Anything is possible!“ ?

NS: Anything is possible!!!! 

DEFECTO still alive?

MH: I talked to your bandmate Frederic some time ago. He has also been working on a solo project called SUMR. Do we have to worry about DEFECTO?

NS: Not at all! We started Defecto 12 years ago, and have done many great things together. It’s a natural little break, where the main songwriters (me and Frederik) have had some other creative things we needed to get out of our system, that didn’t fit in Defecto.

I had some really personal songs, and a need to make an album all by myself, with no one to question anything, and Frederik had a whole other genre he wanted to experiment with.

A new Defecto album is in the cards!

I’m not making a metal genre you hear every day!

MH: Frederic’s project has a very modern sound and breaks new ground. Because of your vocal skills your album could have been turned out as a melodic death metal album. See also, for example, the last singles of DEFECTO, which became very dark and hard. So why did you choose heavy metal for your album, especially cause it’s about dark serious themes?

NS: I’m doing what I love doing and there’s no changing that. I’m not making a metal genre you hear everyday, I definitely have my own twist on it. I’m not a fan of the newer metal that’s coming out, I think it’s too computer-polished with too many takes put together, topped with little boys vocals when there isn’t screaming vocals, and I don’t really think it’s ground breaking anymore. 

The latest Defecto songs were very dark indeed, I think it was a democratic collaboration on how much we all in the band hated the current situation with Covid and wars.

MH: When did you get the idea to create a solo project?

NS: Many years ago. It’s a long overdue thing that just finally happened to fit me and Defectos schedule. I’ve always had the urge to “do my own thing alone” besides Defecto and other projects. I like being in control and do it all myself, it makes me feel good.

A personal mission

MH: „Resonance“ has become a very personal album, on which you not only address social issues that are personally important to you, but also experiences that have happened to you yourself and that have shaped you. The song „Misery“, for example, is about a formative experience in your childhood, when there was a fight between your parents. You describe in some songs that you had to go through very difficult and hard times. Is the music and especially this album also a kind of self-therapy?

NS: Definitely, it’s extremely therapeutic. It makes be able to say things loud and get it out of my system. I have always used music and its creativity to control my thoughts and to disappear from the world when it hurt. I could dive even deeper in Resonance, as it is my very own.

Depression pains more people

MH: Do you think that the number of people with depression has increased? If it is, what could be the reason?

NS: People require more and more of people. There are more and more rules about everything: you can’t say this, you can’t say that! No matter what you do, you’re doing something to feel bad about. People on Social Media are showing all their perfect lives with a million beauty filters and their big smiles. All these perfect unrealistic things that everyone is striving, makes the fall harder when people realise that it’s unreal and impossible.

That’s my take on why depression has become more common. Depression is also becoming more “respected” than it was before, like many others psychological things, which I think is important.

MH: Is there a particular song, band or album that has given you strength in past hard times?

NS: Not really, the thing that gives me strength, is to make it myself.

Guitar provided joy

MH: The cover artwork features a child walking between two worlds, a beautiful paradisiacal world and a dead wasteland. You could also call it heaven and hell. Please give me an example of a beautiful experience from your childhood or youth that you still remember fondly today!

NS: I remember when I got my first guitar. It was a cheap BC Rich Warlock. Horrible guitar, but boy was I happy, and it was my own! Didn’t stop playing from that day forward.

Only vinyl

MH: Why you release “Resonance” only on vinyl, not on CD? How many vinyls were pressed in the first edition?

NS: 200 vinyls in the first edition!

I wanted to have CD’s but the interest for CD’s are not great and I wanted to save the money, and just have the vinyls, as we especially in Denmark see a huge vinyl boost these days. When I’m a bit further and have collaborators in terms of a booking agency and can get more out of Denmark, I’ll have CD’s made.

A video with fun factor

MH: The video for the song „Spit Out Your Pride“ is rather funny and exaggerated despite its critical statement.  I have also seen musicians from DEFECTO. It looks like you guys had a lot of fun. Were all the actors personal acquaintances of yours? How was the video shoot? Did you have a big party after the shoot?

NS: I invited fans and followers to come to my studio with a 4 day notice. 25 people were selected and only knew some of them, from shows, Facebook etc.

The shoot was so much fun! I had everything planned carefully so it was very effective, so we shot for about 6 hours. I edited the video the day after and that was that!

We didn’t have a party, but I invited all the people who came to stay until we were done, and let them join me in the studio to listen to the full song. We then had a glass of wine/soda/something and that was that.

Good people! I feel grateful!

MH: The music business can be very tough and a shark tank at times. Have you had experiences with people in the music business who acted with arrogance and lack of empathy?

NS: yes, multiple times. Especially people who know that their in a position of power. It’s frustrating.

Future visions

MH: Will you go on tour with your album?

NS: There are plans in Denmark for spring, and I’m in dialogue with some bookers around Europe. Im hoping to get some festival shows, and some support shows in 2023 in Europe, then release another album, and THEN do some shows on my own around Europe. That is what I’m pushing for at least.

MH: Do you want to tell us what musical things are planned for next year?

NS: I’m gonna focus on my solo project a bit. Then there will be focus on some new Defecto, maybe some of Hank Shermans solo project (mercyful fate) where I sing, and then I’ll focus on my studio, where i produce, mix and master for other bands.

Heavy Metal

Nicklas Sonne (Facebook/Homepage) aus Dänemark dürfte den Fans von der Band DEFECTO auf jeden Fall ein Begriff sein, denn Nicklas Sänger dieser Band. Ich schätze diese kreative Band sehr und warte sehnsüchtig auf ein neues Album. Nun gibt es aber erst einmal ein Soloalbum von Nicklas Sonne. Was uns auf seinem Debütalbum „Resonance“ am 11.11.’22 erwarten wird und ob es uns die Wartezeit bis zum nächsten DEFECTO Album versüßen wird, werdet Ihr in unserem Review erfahren.

Ein schmaler Grat

Das optisch wunderschön gestaltete Cover Artwork versinnbildlicht ein gefährliches Szenario. Ein Kind balanciert auf einem Seil zwischen zwei Welten; der paradiesischen Natur auf der einen Seite und einem zerstörten Ödland voller glühender Lava auf der anderen Seite. Das Bild lässt verschiedene Interpretationen zu. Das Kind könnte allgemein für die naive Menschheit stehen, die auf dem schmalen Grat zwischen Leben und Zerstörung wandelt.

Es könnte aber auch den Menschen Nicklas symbolisieren, der in seinem Leben zwischen diesen Welten wandelte, sowohl mit schönen als auch schmerzhaften Erfahrungen und Erlebnissen. Warum ich darauf komme? Jeder einzelne Song auf dem Album ist ein sehr persönlich und hat in irgendeiner Form mit Nicklas zu tun, mit seinem Leben und seinen Erfahrungen. Wer sich näher mit den Texten beschäftigt, wird eine Menge über Nicklas erfahren, vielleicht auch sich selbst irgendwo wiederfinden und sogar etwas für das eigene Leben mitnehmen.

Ein sehr persönliches Album

Vor zwei Monaten stolperte ich bei YouTube über die erste Single „Misery“ und war total begeistert. Und dann wurde schon ein Album angekündigt. Nicklas wollte sich mal richtig selbst verwirklichen. Zudem könnte es auch als eine Art Selbsttherapie gedient haben. Denn „Resonance“ ist es ein sehr persönliches Album geworden, in dem Nicklas uns unter anderem mit den Dämonen seiner Vergangenheit, aber auch der Gegenwart konfrontiert. Hierzu ein Kommentar zur Single „Misery“:

Ich war 6 Jahre alt und wurde von meiner Mutter in die Wohnung gezerrt. Sie und mein Vater hatten sich heftig gestritten, und mein Vater war immer noch dabei, unten einen Tumult zu veranstalten, während unsere Mutter mir Gute-Nacht-Lieder vorsang, damit ich einschlief.
Am frühen Morgen des nächsten Tages wachte ich auf, weil sie in mein Zimmer kamen und sich anschrieen. Meine Mutter holte mich aus dem Bett, aber mein Vater zog mich schnell von meiner Mutter weg und schrie „er gehört mir“, dann zog mich meine Mutter zurück und schrie „Nein, er gehört mir!“

Kommentar von Nicklas Sonne auf seiner Homepage

„Misery“ ist ein astreiner Heavy Metal Song, der nach kurzer synfonischer Einleitung die Reifen qualmen lässt. Scharfe Riffs und treibende Drums prügeln den melodischen Song voran. Die Power Voice von Nicklas hat einen unglaublichen Wiedererkennungswert. Der Mann ist ein wahres Kraftpaket. Ansonsten fällt das sehr freudige lebendige Gitarrenspiel auf, dass in einem genialen Solo seinen Höhepunkt findet. Dieser Song verschafft dem Album sofort ungeteilte Aufmerksamkeit. Geil!

Moderner Heavy Metal

Auf seinem Album lebt Nicklas den Heavy Metal! Das musikalische Gericht ist nicht neu, aber das muss es auch nicht sein. Die Hauptsache ist, dass es verdammt schmackhaft serviert wird und zu einem Festmahl wird.

Das Album bietet durchweg tolle Songs, auch wenn persönliche Geschmäcker wie immer den einen oder anderen favorisieren. Es ist ein modernes Heavy Metal Album geworden, dass man von vorne bis hinten in Dauerschleife hören kann. Die Songs sind ausgewogen gestaltet.

Ich weiß, dass Nicklas ein fantastischer Allrounder ist. Er kann alles singen, von melodischen Harmonien bis hin zu den extremen Vocals wie Growls. (Dazu muss man sich nur die letzten Singles von DEFECTO anhören.) Auf seinem Album nimmt er aber von Experimenten oder groben stilistischen Wechseln wohl bewusst Abstand. Allerdings hätte ich mir angesichts der Thematiken noch ein oder zwei Songs gewünscht, die eine etwas wütendere dunklere Seite offenbart hätten.

Rundum-Sorglos-Paket

Beim Song „Carrier of Extinction“ zeigt Nicklas ansatzweise diese dunkle Seite. Anfänglich stampft der Song machtvoll voran, doch das soll sich später noch ändern, wenn der Song vorangepeitscht wird und wieder eines der fantastischen Solos durch den Song fegt. Nicklas nutzt auch gerne symphonische Keys wie in diesem Fall eine gewaltige orchestrale Bläserwand, die den Dramafaktor noch intensiviert. Doch man sollte erwähnen, dass es sich hier keinesfalls um Symphonic Metal handelt, bevor ein falscher Eindruck entsteht. Nicklas setzt alles sehr akzentuiert ein, eben genau da, wo es Sinn macht und dem Song dienlich ist.

Bei Songs wie „All Thanks To You“ (Ein herzliches Dankeschön für eine ganz besondere Person.) oder „Breathe“ (Ein sehr bewegender Abschied von einem geliebten Menschen am Sterbebett.) ist Nicklas mehr auf höchst gefühvollener Ebene unterwegs ohne das es zu aufgesetzt bzw. künstlich wirkt.

Er hat zudem ein Händchen für dynamische temperamentvolle Nummern, die dem Hörer sofort ins Blut gehen und im Kopf bleiben. So z.B. auch beim Song „Keybord-Warriors“, der die hässliche Mentalität der Internet-Hater anklagt, die unter dem Deckmantel der Anonymität ihre Schmutz verbreiten.

Ein weiterer Knaller

ist die dritte Single „Spit Out Your Pride“. Das Video zum Thema Arroganz und Überheblichkeit, fehlender Empathie und Toleranz anderen gegenüber ist hervorragend umgesetzt und Nicklas ist sich auch für ein wenig Selbstironie nicht zu schade und repräsentiert als Hauptdarsteller in seinem Video genau die oben genannten charakterlichen Hässlichkeiten , die er verabscheut. Unter allen Darstellern haben sich auch die Bandkameraden von DEFECTO gemischt. Trotz des ernsten Themas ein amüsantes Video.

Der Song selber geht nicht zimperlich zur Sache, sondern rennt schnurstracks nach vorne und glänzt mit einem epischen Chorus, wobei das ausgiebige Solo mal wieder erstklassig gerockt wird.

Fazit

Es gibt keinen Grund, dass Album „Resonance“ von Nicklas Sonne nicht zu lieben. Es ist ein Heavy Metal Album, dass mit fantastischen Songs aufwartet, die modern und frisch klingen. Die Songs erblühen alle mit einer leuchtenden berauschenden Kraft, die den Hörer durchströmt und das Herz mit Freude und Stärke erfüllt. Vielen Dank an Nicklas Sonne für dieses sehr persönliche Debütalbum! Eine ganz tolle beachtliche Leistung und umso bewundernswerter, weil es ein Soloalbum ist.

Heavy Metal

Nicklas Sonne (Facebook/Homepage) from Denmark should be known to the fans of the band DEFECTO. Because Nicklas is the singer of this band. I appreciate this creative band very much and wait eagerly for a new album. But for now there is a solo album from Nicklas Sonne. What we can expect on his debut album „Resonance“ on 11.11.’22 and whether it will sweeten the waiting time until the next DEFECTO album, you will find out in our review.

a thin line

The visually beautifully designed cover artwork symbolizes a dangerous scenario. A child balances on a rope between two worlds, the paradisiacal nature on one side and a destroyed wasteland full of glowing lava on the other. The image allows for various interpretations. The child could generally stand for naive humanity, which walks the fine line between life and destruction.

But it could also symbolize the man Nicklas, who walked between these worlds in his life, with both beautiful and painful experiences and adventures. Why do I come to this? Every single song on the album is a very personal one and has to do with Nicklas in some way, with his life and his experiences. If you take a closer look at the lyrics, you will learn a lot about Nicklas, maybe find yourself somewhere and even take something for your own life.

a very intimate album

Two months ago I stumbled across the first single „Misery“ on YouTube and was totally excited. And then an album was already announced. Nicklas wanted to realize himself. In addition, it could also have served as a kind of self-therapy. For „Resonance“ it has become a very personal album, in which Nicklas confronts us, among other things, with the demons of his past, but also the present. Here is a comment on the single „Misery“:

Misery

I was 6 years old, and was being tugged in by my mom. She and dad had had a huge fight, and dad was still making a turmoil downstairs as our mom sang me goodnight lullabies to make me sleep.
Early morning the next day, I woke up by them entering my room, screaming, and shouting at each other. My mom took me out of bed, but dad quickly grabbed me from mom and yelled “he is mine”, then my mom  pulled me back and yelled “no, he is mine”.

„Misery“ is a straight heavy metal song, which lets the tires smoke after a short symphonic introduction. Sharp riffs and driving drums beat the melodic song forward. The power voice of Nicklas has an incredible recognition value. The man is a true powerhouse. Otherwise, the very joyful lively guitar playing stands out, which finds its climax in a brilliant solo. This song immediately gives the album undivided attention. Awesome!

modern heavy metal

On his album Nicklas lives the heavy metal! This musical dish is not new, but it doesn’t have to be. The main thing is that it is served damn tasty and becomes a feast.

„Resonance“ offers consistently great songs, even if personal tastes as always favor one or the other. It has become a modern heavy metal album that you can listen to from front to back in continuous loop. The songs are well balanced.

I know that Nicklas is a fantastic all-rounder. He can sing everything from melodic harmonies to the extreme vocals like growls. (You only have to listen to DEFECTO’s last singles for that.) On his album, however, he probably consciously refrains from experiments or rough stylistic changes. However, given the themes, I would have liked one or two songs that would have revealed a somewhat angrier darker side.

On the song „Carrier of Extinction“ Nicklas starts to show a little of his dark side. Initially the song stomps powerfully forward, but that is to change later when the song is whipped forward and again one of the fantastic solos sweeps through the song. Nicklas also use symphonic keys like in this case a massive orchestral wall of brass that intensifies the drama factor. But it should be mentioned that this is by no means Symphonic Metal before a wrong impression is created. Nicklas uses everything very accentuated, just exactly where it makes sense and serves the song.

In songs like „All Thanks To You“ (A heartfelt thank you for a very special person.) or „Breathe“ (A very moving farewell to a loved one on his deathbed.) Nicklas is more on a highly emotional level without it being too artificial.

He also has a knack for dynamic spirited numbers that immediately get into the listener’s blood and stay in the head. This is also the case with the song „Keybord-Warriors“, for example, which accuses the ugly mentality of Internet haters who spread their filth under the guise of anonymity.

another banger

is the third single „Spit Out Your Pride“. The video on the subject of arrogance and arrogance, lack of empathy and tolerance towards others is excellently implemented and Nicklas as the main actor is not too shy for a little self-irony and represents in his video exactly the above-mentioned character ugliness, which he can not stand at all. Mixed in with all the performers are the bandmates of DEFECTO. Despite the serious topic an amusing video

The song itself is not squeamish, but runs straight forward and shines with an epic chorus, while the extensive solo is also first class.

conclusion

There is no reason not to love the album „Resonance“ by Nicklas Sonne. It is a heavy metal album that comes up with fantastic songs that sound modern and fresh. The songs all blossom with a bright intoxicating power that flows through the listener and fills the heart with joy and strength. Many thanks to Nicklas Sonne for this very personal debut album! A very great remarkable achievement and all the more admirable because it’s a solo album.
