Progressive Metal

Finnland hat mir dieses Jahr schon ein absolutes Highlight (DIABLO-„When All The Rivers Are Silent“) beschert. Nun habe ich das Vergnügen die Band ODDLAND (Facebook) und ihr Album „Vermilion“ vorzustellen. Die Band spielt progressiven Metal mit einer gesunden Härte und ohne sich allzu sehr in extreme Spielereien zu verrennen, obwohl ihre Kompositionen als kunstfertig zu bezeichnen sind. ‚Vermilion‘ ist übrigens der englische Begriff für die Farbe Zinnoberrot, was sich auch in der optischen Gestaltung des Covers und der Vinyl wiederfindet. Wie ihr auf dem Bild links sehen könnt, ist die Scheibe eine optische Augenweide.

„Vermilion“

als Magnus Opus des Albums besteht aus fünf Teilen. Die Einleitung „Arrival“ führt den Hörer sanft in das Geschehen ein. Hier werden allerdings schon gewisse Markenzeichen der Band deutlich. Es sind die extravagante melodischen Klangwelten, die hier neben dem Piano unter anderem mit einem Sopran-Saxophon erzeugt werden. Dieses Instrument wird nicht digital erzeugt, sondern wird vom Gitarristen Jussi Poikonen selber gespielt.

Finde ich persönlich außergewöhnlich und daher bemerkenswert. Außerdem fällt direkt das prägnante Bassspiel von Joni Palmorth auf, dass eine tragende Rolle im Sound von ODDLAND innehat. Er beherrscht sein Instrument vorzüglich. Von allen Fertigkeiten der Band konnte ich mich auch schon live (Konzertbericht) überzeugen.

In die Düsternis

Der zweite Track „Below“ macht unmissverständlich klar, dass es nicht nur bei schönen harmonischen Klängen bleibt. Die harten Töne lassen nicht lange auf sich warten und die musikalische Welt von ODDLAND wird dunkel. Die Band vermag es verschiedene Stimmungen zu erzeugen, die von mystischen über dystopischen bis hin zu harmonischen und sogar epischen Klangwelten geprägt sind. Dementsprechend facettenreich tritt auch Sänger Saki auf. Mit viel Gefühl oder Härte passt er sich den Stimmungen an. Die hervorragenden stimmlichen Qualitäten gefallen mir z.B. in besonderem Maße beim Song „Feed The Void“ mit seinen vorzüglichen Gesangslinien.

„Emancipator“ klingt anders,

indem er nicht so düster wirkt. Gesanglich wohl der anspruchsvollste Song, der teilweise etwas sperrig daherkommt. Ein Song, auf den man sich einlassen und den Zugang finden muss, um sich von ihm einfangen lassen zu können. Ein extravaganter Song!

Im ruhigen bedächtigen Zwischenspiel „Pathway“ gibt es keine Überraschungen. Man kann in seelenruhe dem wunderbaren Gesang lauschen, den Saki hier mit glasklarer Stimme vorträgt. Er hat eine super Kontrolle über seine Stimme. Einfach traumhaft! Die klangliche Oase ist ein schöner Ruhepol, bevor es mit dem kräftigen „Resonance“ weitergeht, der mit eigenwilliger Dynamik und Rhythmik auftritt. Aber das ist ja eben auch ein stilistisches Mittel von ODDLAND. Ein Lob gilt auch dem Drummer, denn hier ist nicht das Motto: einfach die Double-Bass zünden und los gehts. Bei ODDLAND ist alles andere als Standardrhythmik angesagt.

In die Vollen

tritt dann noch einmal der Schlusstrack „Unity“ und ODDLAND bieten noch einmal alles auf, was ihr Repertoire hergibt und ist vom Stil dem Song „Below“ nicht unähnlich. Es geht mit viel Djent zur Sache. Der dominante Bass und das frickelige Gitarrenspiel sind ein echtes Prädikatsmerkmal. Zusammen mit den harmonischen Gesangslinien ergibt sich immer wieder ein spezieller faszinierender Sound.

Fazit

„Vermilion Oceans“ ist ein kleines Kunstwerk geworden und offenbart die genialen Fähigkeiten der Band, die sich abseits von standardisierten Wegen bewegen. Das ist Musik, die ein genaueres und aufmerksames Zuhören erfordert, um den Sound von ODDLAND erfassen zu können. Aber es ist so was von lohnenswert sich in die Welt von ODDLAND fallen zu lassen.

Progressive Metal

Finland has already given me an absolute highlight this year (DIABLO-„When All The Rivers Are Silent“). Now I have the pleasure to introduce the band ODDLAND (Facebook) and their album „Vermilion“. The band plays progressive Metal with a healthy harshness and without getting too lost in extreme gimmicks, although their compositions can be described as artful. The color ‚Vermilion‘ is reflected in the visual design of the cover and the vinyl. As you can see on the picture on the left, the disc is a visual highlight.

„Vermilion“

as the magnus opus of the album consists of five parts. The introduction „Arrival“ introduces the listener gently into the action. Here, however, certain trademarks of the band already become clear. It is the extravagant melodic soundscapes, which are created here in addition to the piano, among other things, with a soprano saxophone. This instrument is not digitally generated, but is played by guitarist Jussi Poikonen himself.

I personally find this extraordinary and therefore remarkable. In addition, the impactful bass playing of Joni Palmorth is immediately noticeable, which has a fundamental role in the sound of ODDLAND. He masters his instrument excellently. I could already convince myself of all skills of the band live.

In red darkness

The second track „Below“ makes it unmistakably clear that it does not remain only with beautiful harmonic sounds. Hard tones are not long in coming and the musical world of ODDLAND becomes dark. The band is able to create different moods, ranging from mystical to dystopian to harmonic and even epic soundscapes. Accordingly, singer Saki appears multifaceted. With a lot of emotion or harshness he adapts to the different moods in the songs. The excellent vocal qualities please me, for example, in particular in the song „Feed The Void“ with its exquisite vocal lines.

„Emancipator“ sounds different,

by not seeming so gloomy. Vocally probably the most demanding song, which comes across a bit bulky in parts. A song that you have to get involved and find the access to be able to be caught by it. An extravagant song!

In the quiet thoughtful interlude „Pathway“ there are no surprises. You can listen in peace to the wonderful vocals that Saki performs here with a crystal clear voice. He has a super control over his voice. Simply dreamlike! The sonic oasis is a nice resting place before it continues with the powerful „Resonance“, which appears with idiosyncratic dynamics and rhythms. But that’s just a stylistic device of ODDLAND. Praise also goes to the drummer Ville Viitanen, because here it goes not like: just ignite the double bass and go. With ODDLAND everything else than standard rhythms is announced.

With power

arises the last track „Unity“ and ODDLAND putting everything on the line. It is not dissimilar in style to the song „Below“. It goes to the point with a lot of djent sound. The dominant bass and the frickelige guitar play are a real predicate feature. Together with the harmonic vocal lines it always results in a special fascinating sound.

Conclusion

„Vermilion Oceans“ has become a work of art and reveals the band’s ingenious abilities to move away from standardized paths. This is music that requires a closer and more attentive listening to be able to grasp the sound of ODDLAND. But it is so worthwhile to let yourself fall into the world of ODDLAND. By the way, the vinyl of this great album is also a visual treasure as you can see on the picture on the left.
