Wer hätte gedacht, dass ich zu VOLBEAT (Homepage / Facebook) noch mal ein Review verfassen würde. Ich habe die ersten beiden Alben „The Strength/ The Sound / The Songs“ und „Rock The Rebel / Metal The Devil“ geliebt. VOLBEAT hatten damals einen ganz neuen Sound erfunden, zu dem diese ungewöhnlich geile Stimme von Michael Poulsen einfach hervorragend passte. Mit dieser Kombination aus Rockabilly und Metal hatte man in der Form ein Alleinstellungsmerkmal. Der Erfolg stellte sich für VOLBEAT schnell ein.

Tja, und mit wachsendem Erfolg verflog meine Liebe zur Band. Die Songs wurden immer softer und fröhnten dem Mainstream. Natürlich war man mit diesen Songs mehr im Radio vertreten und VOLBEAT konnten immer mehr Fans um sich scharen. Vielen Fans der ersten Stunde erging es wie mir. Die einst so geschätzte Persönlichkeit der Band ging immer mehr und mehr verloren.

Und nun? Totgesagte leben länger….

Jetzt fragt man sich natürlich, warum ich mich daz habe hinreißen lassen, nun doch etwas über das neue Album „Servant Of The Mind“ zu schreiben, was seit dem 03.12.2021 erhältlich ist. Nun, es lag jedenfalls nicht an den ersten Singles, die bei YouTube zu sehen und zu hören waren. Bei der Singleauskopplung „Wait A Minute My Girl“ und “ und „Dagen Før (feat. Stine Bramsen)“ fühlte ich mich direkt bestätigt, dass die neue Scheibe wieder mal nix für mich sein wird.

Dann begab es sich jedoch zu der Zeit der Veröffentlichung von „Shotgun Blues“. Unser Redaktionschef postete im Chat das neue Video und zeigte Begeisterung für den neuen Song. Nachfolgend wurde der Song zwiegespalten von der ‚metal-heads.de‘-Redaktion aufgenommen. (siehe Bericht hier)

Comeback der heavy Riffs

Als ich „Shotgun Blues“ das erste Mal hörte, dachte ich zunächst: Hey, die Gitarrenriffs sägen heftig kräftig. Dazu noch ein flottes Marschtempo. Gar nicht so schlecht! Aber dann passiert im Song zunächst nicht mehr viel. Rhythmus und Gesang wiederholen sich ein ums andere Mal. Kurz bevor ich mich begann zu langweilen, werde ich glücklicherweise durch den Solopart wieder aufgeweckt und dann schüppen VOLBEAT tatsächlich noch mal einige Schaufeln Kohle in den Heizkessel und der Song trommelt noch entschlossener nach vorne. Dabei dachte ich: Boa, jetzt kommt richtig krasser Scheiss! Aber dann verpufft dieser gute harte Ansatz im Nichts, als der Song einfach wieder in den anfänglichen Rhythmus mit den gleichen Gesangslinien übergeht. So bleibt er für mich im Ansatz stecken. Allerdings gibt es für den Song aber noch eine angenehme Überraschung, doch dazu später mehr….

Mit dem nächsten Streich

„Becoming“ haben mich VOLBEAT dann schon erheblich mehr überzeugt. Plötzlich wird der Sound heftig unter Strom gesetzt, so dass man hier nicht mehr von VOLBEAT, sondern von ‚VOLTBEAT“ reden könnte. Der Song haut Dir am Anfang mit dem energiegeladenen aggressiven Sound schön das Toupet von der Glatze. „Becoming“ kommt mit einer bösen Metalwalze herangebraust. So was kenne ich von der Band gar nicht. Ich war begeistert und war neugierig auf den Songverlauf. Und in der Tat werde ich an gute alte Zeiten erinnert. Der Song ist wirklich gut! Insgesamt geht der Song noch einen Schritt weiter als „Shotgun Blues“ und stimmt mich fröhlich.

Die Highlights

„The Sacred Stones“ hat mich sofort total überzeugt. Eine düstere Atmosphäre steigt auf und mächtige Riffs bahnen sich ihren Weg. Die Drums spielen wuchtig auf und dann zeigt Michael glücklicherweise mal wieder mehr seine dunklere Seite. Hierbei kommen die Vibes seiner einzigartigen Stimme schön zum Vorschein. Auch der Chorus weiß zu gefallen. Außerdem ist der Solopart zum Ende mal was besonderes. Herrlich rockig und fetzig im abgedrehten Style setzt er ein Feuer der Freude in mir frei.

Den Geist von Elvis…

ist auf ewig ein Bestandteil der Musikwelt. Nun hat Michael sich mal wieder von diesem Geist beseelen lassen. „The Devil Rages On“ ist für mich einfach der Burner auf dem Album. Das ist richtig heißer Scheiss. VOLBEAT brechen damit aus der Komfortzone aus und besinnen sich ihrer Qualitäten für außergewöhnliche Darbietungen. Dieser Song ist wie geschaffen für Michael, der hier geile Elvis-Vibes aufleben lässt. Das klingt megacool! Der Song überrascht an jeder Ecke und versprüht einen dunklen Westernstyle mit ausgefallenen Gitarrenklängen. Das ist ein Song, der auf jeden Fall im ‚Titty Twister‘ aus dem Film „From Dusk Till Dawn“ das Publikum zum Ausrasten gebracht hätte. So will ich VOLBEAT hören!

…und mit hartem Stahl gearbeitet

Neben „Becoming“ wird auf dem Album noch andere Songs aus reichlich hartem Stahl gegossen. Hierunter fallen z.B. so Songs wie „Say No More“ oder auch „Lasse’s Britta„. Da kommen harte Metallica-Vibes zum Vorschein. Apropos METALLICA…. Dazu gibt es ebenfalls ein coole Überraschung, doch dazu gleich mehr. VOLBEAT lassen aber auch noch ne

Gute-Laune-Rakete

steigen. „Wait A Minute My Girl“ ist das genaue Gegenteil der letztgenannten Songs. Eine spritzige Rock’n Roll-Nummer, zu der man das Tanzbein schwingen kann. Harmlos, aber unterhaltsam ist es schon, wenn Klavier und Trompete zum Einsatz kommen. Kann man machen und tut keinem weh. Im Gesamtkontext Hinblick könnte man es als nette Auflockerung durchgehen lassen. Dasselbe gilt für den arglosen Song „Dagen Før (feat. Stine Bramsen)“, der sich halt nett anhört, aber dieser Style flasht mich persönlich nicht. Ganz im Gegensatz zu den Songs auf der Bonus CD der Limited Edition.

DELUXE ist Pflicht

Ich kann jedem nur anraten, sich die Deluxe-Edition zuzulegen, denn dort sind noch zusätzlich granatenmäßige Songs drauf. Zumal die Deluxe-Edition nur zwei oder drei Euro mehr kostet.

Insgesamt gibt es dort drei Cover und alternative Versionen von „Shotgun Blues“ und „Dagen Før“. Letztgenannter wird hier einfach solo von Michael vorgetragen. Nicht weiter wild, also schnell zum nächsten. „Shotgun Blues“ hat durch den Gastgrowler Dave Matrise von der amerikanischen Deat-Metal-Band JUNGLE ROT eine echte Aufwertung erfahren. So hat der Song die richtige Würze. Noch nicht perfekt, aber schon echt gut. Dann wäre da noch das steinharte Brett „Return To None“ (WOLFBRIGADE Cover), das verdammt gut abgeht. Darüber hinaus rocken VOLBEAT ein Cover vom METALLICA-Song „Dont’t Tread On Me“, das meiner Meinung nach sehr gut gelungen ist.

Der irrwitzigste und abgefahrenste Song ist „Domino“ (The Cramps/Roy Orbison cover).

Es müssen nicht immer die harten Riffs sein, denn VOLBEAT können auch einfach mit purem Rock’n Roll eine geile Show liefern. VOLBEAT haben dem Song einen guten Schliff und ne Dosis Power verpasst. Das Ding macht super Laune. Mega!

Fazit

Diese Bonus-Songs heben das ganze Album noch mal auf ein höheres Level, so dass ich sagen muss: „Servant Of The Mind“ ist das eines der besten Alben in der ganzen Diskografie von VOLBEAT.

VOLBEAT kehren auf ihrem neuen Album „“Servant of the Mind“ wieder mehr zu ihren Wurzeln zurück, aber mit einem modernen kraftvollen Sound. Endlich mal wieder ein Album, dass die Qualität der Band aufzeigt und bis auf wenige Ausnahmen nicht zu weichgespült ist.

Das Album begeistert mit teils mutigen und außergewöhnlichen Songs. Michael Poulsen brilliert facettenreich mit seinen einzigartigen Vocals und die Gitarrenfront habe ich schon lange nicht mehr so vielseitig und spielfreudig gehört. Wenn man die Highlights dieses Albums aufgreift, weiter verfolgt und ausbaut, dann könnten VOLBEAT in Zukunft wieder für flammenden Rock’n Roll-Metal stehen.

VOLBEAT sollten den Mut aufbringen und den nun eingeschlagenen Weg weitergehen, denn mit diesem Album haben VOLBEAT mich wieder voll eingefangen und in mir die Hoffnung geweckt, dass sie in Zukunft wieder richtig die Sau rauslassen. Und ich bin davon überzeugt, dass VOLBEAT mit dem Spirit von früher sehr viel Spaß an der Musik haben. Fans der früheren Alben sollten dem Album auf jeden Fall Aufmerksamkeit schenken.

Ich jedenfalls habe mir nach langer langer Zeit wieder ein VOLBEAT Album gekauft, denn mein Herz für die Band hat abermals Feuer gefangen. Darüber freue ich mich sehr und von daher gibt es fette 9 von 10 Punkten, wobei ich bei der normalen Standard-CD-Version Abstriche machen würde.

Metal meets Rock’n Roll

Who would have thought that I would write a review about VOLBEAT again. I loved the first two albums „The Strength/ The Sound / The Songs“ and „Rock The Rebel / Metal The Devil“. VOLBEAT had invented a whole new sound at that time, to which this unusually horny voice of Michael Poulsen just fitted perfectly. With this combination of Rockabilly and Metal they were unique. Therefor the success came quickly for VOLBEAT.

Well, and with growing success my love for the band evaporated. The songs became softer and softer and were more mainstream. Of course, with these songs they were more represented on the radio and VOLBEAT could gather more and more fans around them. But many fans of the first hour had the same experience as me. The once so appreciated personality of the band was lost more and more.

And now? There’s life in the old dog yet….

Now you ask yourself of course, why I’m writing something about the new album „Servant Of The Mind“, which is available since December 3, 2021. Well, it was not because of the first singles, which could be seen and heard on YouTube. With the single „Wait A Minute My Girl“ and „Dagen Før (feat. Stine Bramsen)“ I felt directly confirmed that the new album will once again be nothing for me.

But then it happened at the time of the single release of „Shotgun Blues“. Our chief editor posted the new video in the chat and showed enthusiasm for the new song. Subsequently, the song was received ambivalent by the ‚metal-heads.de‘ editorial . (see report here)

Comeback of heavy riffs

When I heard „Shotgun Blues“ for the first time, I thought at first: Hey, the guitar riffs saw powerful and sharp. In addition, a brisk marching tempo. Not bad at all. But then not much happens in the song at first. Rhythm and vocals repeat themselves one after the other. Just before I started to get bored, I am fortunately woken up again by the solo part and then VOLBEAT actually shovel some more coal into the boiler and the song drums forward even more determinedly. Thereby I thought that this part would be the heater for really awesome shit in this song. But then this approach fizzles out into nothingness as the song just goes back to the initial rhythm with the same vocal lines. So it gets stuck in the approach for me. However, there is still a pleasant surprise for the song, but more on that later….

The next step

With „Becoming“ VOLBEAT have then already convinced me much more. Suddenly the sound is heavily electrified, so that you could talk here no longer of VOLBEAT, but of ‚VOLTBEAT‘. The song hits you at the beginning with the energetic aggressive sound that blows you away. „Becoming“ comes roaring in with an evil Metal roller. I don’t know anything like that from the band. I was excited and curious about the song progression. And indeed, I’m reminded of good old times. The song is really good and would be even better if the chorus wasn’t so easy cheesy again. There I would have wished for more boom. But that can be neglected here. Overall, the song goes one step further than „Shotgun Blues“ and makes me happy.

More highlights

„The Sacred Stones“ has totally convinced me. A dark atmosphere rises and powerful riffs pave their way. The drums play on heavily and then Michael shows fortunately once again more his darker side. Here the vibes of his unique voice come out beautifully. Also the chorus knows how to please. In addition, the solo part at the end is something special. Wonderfully rocking and groovy in fancy style It sets a fire of joy in me free.

The soul of Elvis…

is eternally a part of the music world. Now Michael has once again let himself be inspired by this spirit. „The Devil Rages On“ is for me simply the burner on the album. This is really hot shit. VOLBEAT break out of the comfort zone and reflect on their qualities for extraordinary performances. This song is just made for Michael, who brings horny Elvis vibes to life here. It sounds mega cool. The song surprises at every turn and exudes a dark Western style with fancy guitar sounds. This is a song that would have definitely freaked out the crowd in ‚Titty Twister‘ from the movie „From Dusk Till Dawn“. That’s how I want to hear VOLBEAT!

… and hard steel!

In addition to „Becoming“, the album contains plenty of hard steel. This includes songs like „Say No More“ or „Lasse’s Britta“. There hard Metallica vibes come out. Apropos METALLICA…. There is also a cool surprise, but more about that in a moment. But VOLBEAT also started some

Good mood missiles

„Wait A Minute My Girl“ is the exact opposite of the latter songs. A lively Rock’n Roll song to which you can shake a leg. Harmless, but entertaining it is, when piano and trumpet are used. In the overall context it could be considered as a nice loosening up. The same applies to the harmless song „Dagen Før (feat. Stine Bramsen)“, which sounds just nice, but this style does not flash me personally. Quite in contrast to the songs on the bonus CD of the limited edition.

DELUXE Edition is a must

I can only advise everyone to get the deluxe edition, because there are additional great songs on it. Especially since the deluxe edition doesn’t cost much more.

In total there are three cover songs and alternative versions of „Shotgun Blues“ and „Dagen Før“. The latter is simply performed solo by Michael here. No big deal, so quickly move on to the next one.

„Shotgun Blues“ has been given a real boost by guest growler Dave Matrise of American death metal band JUNGLE ROT. With his sinister voice the song get the right spice. Then there would be the song „Return To None“ (WOLFBRIGADE cover), which goes off damn strong. In addition, VOLBEAT rock a cover of the METALLICA song „Dont’t Tread On Me“, which in my opinion is very well done.

The most insane and wacky song

is „Domino“ (The Cramps/Roy Orbison cover). It doesn’t always have to be the hard riffs, because VOLBEAT can also simply deliver an awesome show with pure Rock’n Roll. VOLBEAT gave the song a good polish and a dose of power. Awesome!

Conclusion

These bonus songs raise the whole album to a higher level, so that I have to say: „Servant Of The Mind“ is one of the best albums in the whole VOLBEAT discography. The old sound played up in a modern way without having too much softener (apart from a few exceptions.)

VOLBEAT return on their new album „“Servant of the Mind“ again more to their roots, but with a modern powerful sound. Finally again an album that shows the quality of the band. The album inspires with partly courageous and unusual songs.

Michael Poulsen shines multi-faceted with his unique vocals and the guitar front I have not heard so versatile and playful for a long time. If the highlights of this album are picked up, followed up and expanded, VOLBEAT could stand for blazing Rock’n Roll Metal again in the future.

VOLBEAT have fully captured me again and awakened the hope in me that they will really burn for awesome music. And I am convinced that VOLBEAT have a lot of fun with the spirit of the past. Fans of the earlier albums should definitely pay attention to the album.

I bought a VOLBEAT album after a long long time, because my heart for the band has caught fire again. I am very happy about this and therefore there are fat 9 of 10 points, although I would cut back on the normal standard CD version.

C: Passend auf den Mainstream zugeschneidert und genau deshalb wieder absehbar kommerziell erfolgreich. METALLICA haben es vor exakt dreißig Jahren vorgemacht. O-Ton Lars Ulrich: ok, wir verlieren 10 oder 20 Tausend alte Fans, aber gewinnen Millionen neue Fans hinzu.

D: Ist der Song bei 3:10 zu Ende?

E: Kommerzielle Nummer, klar, aber ich finde sie trotzdem gut. Dagegen finde ich das neue Album von MAIDEN total langweilig. Na zum Glück sind die Geschmäcker verschieden.

Also lange Rede, kurzer Sinn: als VOLBEAT-Fanboy mag ich es; was die Kollegen schreiben, ist aber nicht ganz von der Hand zu weisen. Entscheidet einfach selbst:

Das neue Album „Servant of the Mind“ erscheint am 03.12.2021 bei Universal Music. Neben der Standardversion mit 13 Tracks wird es eine Deluxe-Version mit vier weiteren Titeln als 2 CD/2 LP Pack geben. Und natürlich die derzeit unvermeidlichen Limited Edition Vinyl-Versionen.
