Nun haben wir zwei Musiker am Start, die THE CIRCLE repräsentieren. Stanley Robertson und Alex Wirt stehen bisher als Gründer hinter THE CIRCLE. Für die Vocals auf diesem Album konnte dazu noch kein Geringerer als Asim Searah gewonnen werden. Asim dürfte den Fans von WINTERSUN oder DAMNATION PLAN ein Begriff sein. Er leistet auf diesem Album ebenfalls eine fantastische Arbeit und veredelt die Songs auf seine ganz spezielle Weise.

Das Projekt THE CIRCLE

MH: Hallo und willkommen zu dem Interview. Ihr seid in der Tat eine der großen Überraschungen in diesem Jahr bisher und habt mich mit Eurem Album „Metamorphosis“ absolut begeistert. Erzählt doch bitte den Lesern von `metal-heads.de´ ein wenig über Euch!

THE CIRCLE: Danke, dass wir heute hier sein können und das du dir die Zeit nimmst! Wir sind The Circle, kommen aus Norddeutschland und stilistisch bezeichnen wir uns als Art Metal, eine Mischung aus Black/Death Metal mit cinematischen und progressiven Elementen.

MH: Was habt Ihr bisher so musikalisch getrieben?  Wie und warum habt Ihr Euch zu THE CIRCLE zusammengeschlossen!

THE CIRCLE: Bevor wir uns dazu entschlossen haben THE CIRCLE so in der Form ins Leben zu rufen, hießen wir noch VAGRANT. Nebenher ist Stan ebenfalls noch Gitarrist bei ASENBLUT. Nach dem letzten VAGRANT Album haben wir uns dann entschieden stilistisch in eine andere Richtung zu gehen. So hat sich dann auch das Lineup geändert und Alex kam als Bassist und Visual Art Designer Mitte 2019 dazu. Schnell war klar, dass wir mit dem neuen Image und Stil auch einen neuen Namen brauchen und so entstand dann THE CIRCLE.

Das Album „Metamorphosis“

MH: Bei „Metamorphosis“ handelt es sich um ein Konzeptalbum, dass sich mit dunklen Emotionen beschäftigt. „Angst“, „Verzweiflung“, „Zorn“ und „Erlösung“ sind die vier Teile der Geschichte.

Wie geht man vor, wenn man über diese dunklen Dinge der menschlichen Existenz Lieder schreiben will?

THE CIRCLE: Als erstes braucht man ein Konzept oder eine Idee worüber man ein Album schreiben will. Die Idee und Inspiration kommt da meistens aus dem Nichts und kann alles sein; so z.B. alte Gedichte, Bilder oder aber auch persönliche Erlebnisse, die einem die zündende Idee bringen. Wenn das Konzept steht wird die Musik passend zum Konzept geschneidert, sodass alles schlüssig ist. Und von da an kommen dann schon die Texte und Vocals. Planung ist hier sehr wichtig.

MH: Wie taucht man in eine solche Welt ein? Könnt Ihr intensive persönliche Erlebnisse mit den Themen dieser Songs verbinden?

THE CIRCLE: Absolut! Anders geht das nicht! Das Album beschreibt persönliche Erlebnisse und das ist unsere Art solche Dinge zu verarbeiten. Hinter jedem Stück steckt also eine Geschichte. Generell taucht man am besten in diese Welt ein, wenn man nachts alleine die Songs schreibt, wenn alles still ist und man sich auf sich selbst fokussieren kann. Dann lässt man sich in eine eigene Welt tragen und vergisst alles andere wie Zeit drum herum.

Gastsänger Asim Searah

MH: Wie lief die Suche nach einem Sänger für so ein außergewöhnliches Projekt?

THE CIRCLE: Erstmal haben wir uns Gedanken gemacht, in was für eine Richtung die Vocals gehen sollen und was wir für die jeweiligen Songs an Gesang brauchen. Dann sind wir die Bands, die  wir privat so hören, durchgegangen und haben geschaut wer potentiell passen könnte oder auch Bock auf das Projekt hat.

MH: Wann habt Ihr Euch darüber Gedanken gemacht?

THE CIRCLE: Nachdem die ersten Songstrukturen und groben Arrangements standen für alle Stücke. Das müsste Ende 2019 gewesen sein. Ab da wurde recht schnell klar in welche Richtung der Gesang gehen sollte. Und dann haben wir uns überlegt wie wir das am besten handhaben und wo wir jemand passenden finden.

Anforderungsprofil für den Sänger

MH: Was für Kriterien sollte dieser erfüllen?

THE CIRCLE: Für uns war wichtig, dass der Gesang nicht eintönig wird. Er sollte erzählend wirken und in eine theatralische Richtung gehen. Von Growls zu hohen Screams oder aber auch druckvolle Clean Vocals. Vor allem ging es uns aber darum jemanden zu finden, der auf Details und Aussprache achtet und die Texte mit der nötigen Delivery rüberbringt und schreibt. Ansonsten wären die Vocals recht monoton geworden und ohne Abwechslung.

MH: Wie seid Ihr letztlich auf Asim Searah gekommen?

THE CIRCLE: Asim kannten wir schon von einigen Festivals, auf denen wir gemeinsam gespielt hatten mit unseren anderen Bands. Er war so der erste, der uns in den Kopf kam und auch der erste, den wir dann auf Facebook angeschrieben haben.

Gemeinsame Visionen

MH: Wie war die erste Reaktion von ihm auf Eure Einladung und wie gestaltete sich die Zusammenarbeit?

THE CIRCLE: Er war offen für das Projekt und gespannt auf die ersten Demos nachdem er erstmal das lyrische Konzept gelesen hatte. Als er die ersten Songs gehört hatte war eigentlich klar, dass es mit uns passt und sowohl Asim und wir hatten Bock gemeinsam an den Vocals für das Album zu arbeiten.

MH: War das Songwriting bis zum Einstieg von Asim komplett abgeschlossen oder hat er sich dahingehend noch eingebracht?

THE CIRCLE: Das Songwriting war bereits fertig. Asim musste sich nur um die Texte und die gesamten Vocals kümmern. Wir teilen das gerne strickt auf, sodass jeder seinen eigenen kreativen Part im Projekt hat. Also Asim macht die Texte und Vocals, Alex kümmert sich um Videos & Fotos und Stan schreibt die Konzepte und Songs.

MH: Wie konntet Ihr Asim für Euer Projekt begeistern? Ich wähle das Wort „begeistern“, weil er auf dem Album wirklich einen wahnsinnig guten Job gemacht hat. Er verleiht den Songs genauso viel Facetten wie es die instrumentalen Kompositionen vermögen und dadurch gelingt es eine fantastische emotionale Tiefe zu erreichen.

THE CIRCLE: Ich denke es hat auf vielen Ebenen gepasst, wir kamen persönlich gut aus und haben ähnliche Visionen geteilt für die Texte. Und am Ende hatte Asim durch die vielseitigen Songs sehr viel Spielraum sich mit den Vocals in jeder Hinsicht auszutoben. Das ist ja besonders an solchen Passagen wie z.B. den gesprochenen Parts in „Chapter II: Verzweiflung“ zu hören.

Drummer gesucht

MH: Welche Instrumente wurden von Stan eingespielt? Auch die Drums?

THE CIRCLE: Alle Instrumental Parts wurden von  Stan geschrieben. Er hat den Bass und Gitarre gespielt und die Orchestration übernommen. Die Drums wurden von ihm programmiert, da wir keinen passenden Drummer gefunden haben. In Zukunft wollen wir aber echte Drums auf den nächsten Alben. Sobald wir da die Ressourcen haben, wird es da echte Drums geben.

MH: Neben der Violine sind noch Klänge eines Zupfinstruments zu hören, welches mich sehr an eine Mandoline erinnert hat. Aber irgendwie passte es nicht zu 100%. Welches Instrument ist es denn?

THE CIRCLE: Das Saiten Instrument, welches häufig im Hintergrund zu hören ist, ist eine Ghuzeng. Das ist ein asiatisches Zupfinstrument und erinnert klanglich sehr an eine Mandoline. Die Inspiration zu diesem Instrument kam durch den Soundtrack aus dem Videospiel Silent Hill, indem eine Mandoline vorkommt, die ähnlich gespielt wird. Für mich fängt dieses Instrument die dunkle Atmosphäre des Videospiels super ein und passt deswegen auch gut auf das Album.

Pläne

MH: Stanley ist noch als Gitarrist bei ASENBLUT tätig. Ist THE CIRCLE nun eine einmalige Sache oder als längeres Projekt geplant?

THE CIRCLE: Für The Circle ist noch viel geplant in den nächsten Jahren. Die nächsten Projekte und Konzepte sind schon in Arbeit. Da wird auf jeden Fall noch viel kommen. Wir wollen schauen wie weit wir dieses Projekt bringen können und so viele Leute wie möglich dafür begeistern . Da bleibt es nicht nur bei diesem einen Album!

MH: Wollt ihr Eure Band erweitern oder soll es bei einem Duo bleiben?

THE CIRCLE: Das steht noch offen. Wenn sich die richtigen Leute finden, dann wären wir auch offen das Projekt als vollwertige Band aufzuziehen. Das ist aber zur heutigen Zeit mit solcher Musik leider sehr schwer.

MH: Plant Ihr trotzdem schon für zukünftige Live-Auftritte?

THE CIRCLE: Live Auftritte sind noch nicht geplant aufgrund der fehlenden Mitglieder und der Distanz zu unserem Sänger. Wenn die Nachfrage da sein sollte, würden wir auf jeden Fall Live Shows mit Session Musikern in Betracht ziehen. Bis dahin ist aber noch ein langer Weg

But after I was allowed to enjoy this album, I will have this band for sure on the screen. I really like the new modern way some bands or artists implement metal music. Boundaries blur and reveal whole new worlds of sound to dive into. (Review here )

Now we have two musicians representing THE CIRCLE: Stanley Robertson and Alex Wirt. They are the founders behind THE CIRCLE. For the vocals on this album they could find none other than Asim Searah. Asim might be known to fans of WINTERSUN or DAMNATION PLAN. He also does a fantastic job on this album and refines the songs in his own special way.

Project THE CIRCLE

MH: Hello and welcome to the interview. You are indeed one of the big surprises this year so far and have absolutely thrilled me with your album „Metamorphosis“. Please tell the readers of `metal-heads.de‘ a little bit about you!

THE CIRCLE: Thank you for having us here today and for taking the time! We are The Circle, come from Northern Germany and stylistically we describe ourselves as Art Metal, a mixture of Black/Death Metal with cinematic and progressive elements.

MH: What have you been up to musically? How and why did you form THE CIRCLE!

THE CIRCLE: Before we decided to start THE CIRCLE in this form, we were still called VAGRANT. Stan is also the guitarist of ASENBLUT. After the last VAGRANT album we decided to go stylistically into another direction. So then the lineup changed and Alex joined as bassist and visual art designer in mid 2019. It quickly became clear that with the new image and style we also need a new name and so THE CIRCLE was born.

Album „Metamorphosis“

MH: „Metamorphosis“ is a concept album that deals with dark emotions. „Fear“, „Despair“, „Wrath“ and „Salvation“ are the four parts of the story.

How do you go about writing songs about these dark things of human existence?

THE CIRCLE: First of all you need a concept or an idea what you want to write an album about. The idea and inspiration usually comes out of nowhere and can be anything; for example, old poems, pictures or even personal experiences that bring you the igniting idea. If the concept stands, the music is tailored to the concept, so that everything is coherent. And from there come the lyrics and vocals. Planning is very important here.

MH: How do you immerse yourself in such a world? Can you connect intense personal experiences with the themes of these songs?

THE CIRCLE: Absolutely! There is no other way! The album describes personal experiences and this is our way to process such things. So there is a story behind every piece. In general, the best way to dive into this world is to write the songs alone at night, when everything is quiet and you can focus on yourself. Then you let yourself be carried into your own world and forget everything else like time around it.

Guest vocalist Asim Searah

MH: How did the search for a singer for such an extraordinary project go?

THE CIRCLE: First of all, we thought about what direction the vocals should go in and what we need for the respective songs. Then we went through the bands that we listen to privately and looked at who could potentially fit or who would be interested in the project.

MH: When did you start thinking about this?

THE CIRCLE: After the first song structures and rough arrangements were in place for all the pieces. That must have been the end of 2019. From then on it became quite clear in which direction the vocals should go. And then we thought about how best to handle it and where to find someone suitable.

Requirements for the singer

MH: What criteria should he fulfill?

THE CIRCLE: For us it was important that the vocals don’t become monotonous. It should have a narrative effect and go in a theatrical direction. From growls to high screams or even powerful clean vocals. Above all, we wanted to find someone who pays attention to details and pronunciation and who can deliver and write the lyrics with the necessary delivery. Otherwise the vocals would have become quite monotonous and without variety.

MH: How did you ultimately come up with Asim Searah?

THE CIRCLE: We already knew Asim from some festivals we played together with our other bands. He was the first one who came to our mind and also the first one we wrote to on Facebook.

Common visions

MH: What was his first reaction to your invitation and how did the collaboration develop?

THE CIRCLE: He was open for the project and excited about the first demos after reading the lyrical concept. When he heard the first songs it was actually clear that it fits with us and both Asim and we were up for working together on the vocals for the album.

MH: Was the songwriting completely finished by the time Asim joined or did he still get involved in that respect?

THE CIRCLE: The songwriting was already done. Asim only had to take care of the lyrics and all the vocals. We like to divide it strictly, so that everyone has his own creative part in the project. So Asim does the lyrics and vocals, Alex takes care of videos & photos and Stan writes the concepts and songs.

MH: How could you inspire Asim for your project? I choose the word „inspire“ because he really did an insanely good job on the album. He adds as many facets to the songs as the instrumental compositions can, and that’s how it manages to achieve a fantastic emotional depth.

THE CIRCLE: I think it fit on many levels, we got along well personally and shared similar visions for the lyrics. And in the end, Asim had a lot of room to let off steam with the vocals in every way because of the versatile songs. This can be heard especially in such passages as the spoken parts in „Chapter II: Despair“.

Search for a drummer

MH: Which instruments were played by Stan? Also the drums?

THE CIRCLE: All instrumental parts were written by Stan. He played the bass and guitar and did the orchestration. The drums were programmed by him because we couldn’t find a suitable drummer. But in the future we want real drums on the next albums. As soon as we have the resources there, there will be real drums.

MH: Besides the violin, there are also sounds of a plucked instrument, which reminded me very much of a mandolin. But somehow it didn’t fit 100%. Which instrument is it then?

THE CIRCLE: The stringed instrument that is often heard in the background is a Ghuzeng. This is an Asian plucked string instrument and its sound is very reminiscent of a mandolin. The inspiration for this instrument came from the soundtrack of the video game Silent Hill, which features a mandolin played in a similar way. For me, this instrument captures the dark atmosphere of the video game super and therefore fits well on the album.

Plans

MH: Stanley is still active as guitarist with ASENBLUT. Is THE CIRCLE now a one-time thing or planned as a longer project?

THE CIRCLE: There is still a lot planned for THE CIRCLE in the next few years. The next projects and concepts are already in the works. There will definitely be a lot more to come. We want to see how far we can take this project and inspire as many people as possible. It will not remain only with this one album!

MH: Do you want to expand your band more besides a drummer?

THE CIRCLE: That is still open. If we find the right people, then we would also be open to start the project as a full-fledged band. But that is unfortunately very difficult at the present time with such music.

MH: Nevertheless, are you already planning for future live performances?

THE CIRCLE: Live shows are not planned yet due to the lack of members and the distance to our singer. If the demand would be there, we would definitely consider live shows with session musicians. But there is still a long way to go

Emotionen

sind ein wesentlicher Bestandteil der menschlichen Existenz, verantwortlich für Glück und Leid gleichermaßen. Entsprechend der musikalischen Erscheinung haben sich THE CIRCLE auf ihrem Album den dunkleren Emotionen gewidmet. Das Album besteht aus den vier Teilen „Angst“, „Verzweiflung“, „Zorn“ und „Erlösung“. Zu den ersten drei Songs gibt es bereits entsprechende Videos. Trotz der deutschen Titel sind die Texte der Songs in englisch verfasst.

Angst

ist eine Emotion, die negativ behaftet ist. Doch Furcht oder Angst sind auch notwendig zum Überleben. Nur darf man sich von ihr nicht auffressen lassen. Ängsten muss man sich stellen und sie überwinden. Der erste Akt „Angst“ malt mit dunklen Farben ein erstes Bild der Melancholie und Düsternis. Doch mit Einsatz des gutturalen Gesangs von Asim nimmt die Erscheinung eine ganz andere Dimension ein. Diese Growls sind hervorragend. Intensiv düster und trotzdem so deutlich vorgetragen, dass man dem Text ohne Probleme folgen kann. Das ist wahre Kunst. Der Wechsel in die sehnsüchtigen cleanen Vocals gelingt butterweich und fügt sich einwandfrei in das Gesamtkonzept ein. Der Gesang ist sehr variabel ausgestaltet und bereichert die Songs mit einer wunderbaren Präsenz. Ich kann mir vorstellen, dass die gesangliche Herausforderung für Asim keine geringe war.

Kunstvoll

ist auch das instrumentale Konzept. Die Atmosphäre ist spürbar. Sie dringt in Dich ein und zieht Dich in ihren Bann. Ein Detailreichtum, der in seiner Art fasziniert ohne dabei die Songs zu überladen und zu belasten. Die Arrangements sind wohldurchdacht und die Elemente in ihrer Intensität an den richtigen Stellen platziert. So höre man das zarte Streicherensemble, die dem Sound eine besondere Melancholie verleihen. Eine ganz spezifische Aura erzeugen mandolinenartige Klänge, die dem ganzen noch eine gewisse Dramaturgie injiziert. Man wird von Nebelschwaden umgeben, verliert sich aber nicht in einer dichten Nebelwand. Das Licht der Nacht verschwindet nicht völlig…

Progressivität

ist eine Eigenschaft, die dem Sound von THE CIRCLE auf jeden Fall zuzuschreiben ist. Diese Wellen wunderschöner Melodien tragen den Hörer sanft über das Meer der Melancholie und man gerät ins Träumen, bis die Wellen an dunklen massiven Riffs brechen und stürmische Blastbeats das Meer aufpeitschen. Die Kompositionen haben es in sich und strotzen vor Ideenreichtum. Trotz der vielfältigen Stimmungswechsel und Schwankungen im Rhythmus und Tempo ist ein in sich harmonisches Gesamtkunstwerk entstanden. Auffällig ist auch die hervorragende Gitarrenarbeit von Stanley, der immer wieder mit virtuosen Solos und krachenden Riffs der Sache den letzten Schliff verpasst.

Fazit

Ein wirklich faszinierendes Kunstwerk haben THE CIRCLE erdacht und realisiert. Mit der Wahl des Gastmusikers Asim Searah als Vocalist haben sie voll ins Schwarze getroffen. Ohne die Hintergrundinformationen im Vorfeld wäre ich nur beim Hören der Songs nie auf die Idee gekommen, dass es sich um ein Debütalbum handelt. Denn es ist mit sehr viel Kunstfertigkeit zu Werke gegangen worden, so dass „Metamorphosis“ es zu einem wahren Highlight in diesem Bereich erstrahlen lässt. Fans der dunklen melodischen Künste werden dieses Album lieben!

Death-Doom-Metal

Meanwhile, bands can no longer be categorized as easily as they were 30 years ago. This typical pigeonhole thinking is no longer in vogue, because many bands let the boundaries blur. Thinking outside the box is part of the modern business. THE CIRCLE (Facebook ) from Hameln also walk on such paths and will let their debut EP „Metamorphosis“ rise from the darkness on 23.04.2021. THE CIRLCE currently consists of the two founders Stanley Robertson and Alex Wirt, with Stanley responsible for the songwriting. For the vocals on this album they were able to win guest musician Asim Searah (DAMNATION PLAN, WINTERSUN).

Emotions

are an essential part of human existence, responsible for happiness and suffering alike. In accordance with the musical appearance THE CIRCLE dedicated their album to the darker emotions. The album consists of the four parts „Fear“, „Despair“, „Wrath“ and „Salvation“. There are already corresponding videos for the first three songs.

Fear

is an emotion that is mentioned negative. To But fear or anxiety is necessary to survive.. But you must not let it consume you. Fears must be faced and overcome. The first act „Fear“ paints with dark colors a first picture of melancholy and gloom. But with the use of Asim’s guttural vocals, the appearance takes on a deeper dimension. These growls are outstanding. Intensely gloomy and yet delivered so clearly that you can follow the lyrics without any problems. This is true art. The switch to the longing clean vocals succeeds buttery smooth and fits perfectly into the overall concept. The vocals are very variable and enrich the songs with a wonderful urgency. I can imagine that the challenge for Asim was no small one.

Artful

is also the instrumental concept. The atmosphere is palpable. It goes through you and pulls you under its spell. A wealth of detail that fascinates in its way without overloading and burdening the songs. The arrangements are well thought out and the elements are placed in their intensity in the right places. So you can hear the delicate string ensemble in the background which give the sound a special melancholy. A very specific aura is created by mandolin-like sounds, which injects the whole thing with a certain dramaturgy. One is surrounded by clouds of fog, but does not lose orientation in a dense wall of fog. The light of the night does not disappear completely….

Progressivity

is a quality that can definitely be attributed to the sound of THE CIRCLE. These waves of beautiful melodies carry the listener gently over the sea of melancholy and one falls into dreaming until the waves break on a dark massive riff and a typhoon breaks in. The compositions have it in them and are bursting with inventiveness. Despite the diverse mood changes and fluctuations in rhythm and tempo, a harmonious work of art has been created. Also noticeable is the excellent guitar work of Stanley, who again and again gives the final touch with great solos and riffs.

Result

A truly fascinating work of art THE CIRCLE have conceived and realized. With the choice of guest musician Asim Searah as a vocalist, they have hit the bull’s eye. Without the background information in advance, I would never have come to the idea that it is a debut album only when listening to the songs. Because it has been done with a lot of meticulousness that makes „Metamorphosis“ shine to a true highlight in this field. Fans of the dark melodic arts will love this album!
