SIGNUM DRACONIS (Facebook) haben für mich mit „The Divine Comedy: Dantes Inferno“ das Album des Jahres 2021 erschaffen (Review). Der Anlaß diesen Artikel zu schreiben, ereignete sich nun am 05.02.2022. Ich bekam Post aus Italien, und zwar von Oscar Grace (Gründer und Gitarrist von SIGNUM DRACONIS).

Wir von ‚metal-heads.de‘ gestalten dieses Magazin mit purer Leidenschaft und reinem Herzblut für den Rock und Metal. Wir verdienen damit kein Geld. So freuen wir uns natürlich, wenn wir umsonst auf Konzerte gehen dürfen, über die wir dann natürlich auch einen Bericht schreiben. Genauso freuen wir uns den Arsch ab über physische Exemplare unserer rezensierten Alben, die man uns als Dank zusendet. Dies ist aber auch nicht immer der Fall. Es ist also nicht so, dass unsere heimische Musiksammlung nur aus Geschenken besteht.

Dann gibt es aber auch die Momente, die über das oben erwähnte hinaus gehen. Und einen dieser besonderen Momente möchte ich gerne mit Euch teilen.

Ein Meisterwerk

Ich entblößte also den Inhalt dieses Paktes und es kam zweierlei Dinge zum Vorschein. Zum einen das Digipack von „The Divine Comedy: Dantes Inferno“ und zum anderen ein zweiseitiger Brief von Oscar Grace, dem Gründer von SIGNUM DRACONIS. Wow! Da war ich schon mal platt! Persönliche Briefe erhält man als Redakteur nicht allzu oft.

Das optisch eindrucksvolle Digipack

Qualitativ hochwertig auf Hochglanz getrimmt macht es von außen schon mal einen hervorragenden wertigen Eindruck.

Aufgeklappt fällt mir zuallererst die persönliche Widmung in der Mitte auf, wo auch das Booklet drinsteckt. Die Unterschrift von Oscar bei der Widmung ist schon ein Kunstwerk an sich. Wie lange er dafür wohl geübt hat? Aber damit hört es nicht auf.

Entnimmt man die beiden CDs aus den Halterungen, so offenbaren sich hinter dem transparenten Kunststoff weitere schöne Bilder. Also man hat hier jede Fläche genutzt, um die Verpackung optisch aufzuwerten.

Der Teufel steckt im Detail

Nachdem ich nun schon mal mit der ersten CD den Player gefüttert habe, wende ich mich dem Booklet zu. Das ist der absolute Wahnsinn. Neben den Songtexten (und davon gibt es ja einige bei einer Spielzeit von über 90 Minuten) gibt es eindrucksvolle Illustrationen, die das imposante poetische Werk dokumentieren. Das macht richtig was her und macht echt einen tollen optischen Eindruck.

Mir kam sofort der Gedanke, dass dies die perfekte Vorlage für ein großformatiges Earbook wäre. Das würde ich mir sofort kaufen. Denn dieses Booklet verdient eigentlich ein größeres Format und würde so noch mehr Eindruck schinden. So sind die Schrift und die Bildchen leider aufgrund des Formats sehr klein geraten. Aber hey… SIGNUM DRACONIS stehen am Anfang und so etwas erfordert dann doch im Vorfeld etwas finanziellen Aufwand, den man in dem Stadium einfach nicht leisten kann. Nichtsdestotrotz ist dieses Digipack eine optische Augenweide. Und der musikalische Inhalt ist ohnehin unvergleichlich genial. Nicht umsonst wurde „The Divine Comedy: Dantes Inferno“ mein Album des Jahres 2021.

Geheimnisse

Und nun zum zweiten Teil des Unboxings! Der Brief! In den ersten Zeilen des Briefes wurde meine Herz durch emotionale Dankesworte erwärmt. Davon war ich sehr gerührt. Dazu muss ich sagen, dass ich vor Zusendung des Promomaterials von dieser Band noch nie etwas gehört habe. Woher auch? Aber das war mir noch nie wichtig! Ich höre mir alles an, was ich in die Finger bekomme. Es müssen nicht immer die großen Namen sein, die mich begeistern. Entweder es packt mich oder eben nicht! Scheissegal, ob es bekannte Bans sind oder eben nicht!

Der Brief offenbarte nicht nur herzerwärmende Worte. Er enthielt auch Geheimnisse über das Album. Diese unterstreichen nur die Tatsache, mit welcher Akribie Oscar Grace an die Umsetzung des poetischen Jahrhundertwerks herangegangen ist. Sage und schreibe 11 Jahre des Schaffens sind in dieses Projekt geflossen. Und dies merkt man dem Album in jeder Faser an. Aber auch mir sind sogenannte Easter Eggs entgangen, die bei dem Album eingebaut wurden. Also steigen wir mal tiefer in die Materie ein:

Der Teufelsgeiger

Bei einem der legendären Konzerte des großen Geigenvirtuosen Niccolò Paganini (Wikipedia) saß ein völlig blinder Zuschauer im Publikum und genoss diesen Abend. An einem bestimmten Punkt des Konzerts bemerkte ein anderer Zuschauer, der direkt neben dem blinden Mann saß:

„Was für eine wunderbare Musik von diesem Geiger!“

Worauf der Blinde erwiderte:
„Ja! Zweifellos ist der Violonist fantastisch! Aber auch der Flötist, der ihn begleitet, ist sehr gut.“

Verblüfft antwortete der Mann dem Blinden:
„Welcher Flötist? Nur Maestro Paganini ist auf der Bühne.“

Verärgert antwortete der blinde Mann:
„Das kann nicht sein. Ich garantiere dir, dass ich den Klang einer Flöte genau gehört habe. Bitte versichern Sie mir, dass nur ein Geiger auf der Bühne steht.“

Der Mann erwiderte erneut:
„Und ich garantiere, dass nur Paganini auf der Bühne steht. Ich kann ihn genau sehen. Er steht ein paar Meter von mir entfernt, und der Rest der Bühne ist leer.“

In diesem Moment wurde das Gesicht des blinden Mannes sehr ernst. Er nahm seinen Blindenstock, stand auf, ging zum Ausgang und drehte sich kurz vor dem Verlassen des Raumes um und wandte sich mit lauten Rufen an alle Anwesenden:
„Dieser Geiger ist kein Mensch. Er ist der Teufel selbst!“

Widmet man sich nun dem Song „Lucifer“, dann stellt man folgendes fest: Wenn man sich dieses Lied im Intro anhört, wird man eine Flöte und eine Geige hören. Hört genau auf den langen Ton, den die Geige macht, und Ihr werdet erkennen, dass der Klang der Geige mit dem einer Flöte verwechselt wird, was auf die eben erzählte Geschichte anspielt.

Der Pakt mit dem Teufel

Auf der anderen Seite haben wir die Geschichte von Meister Guiseppe Tartini (Wikipedia) und seinen berühmtesten Kompositionen „The Devil’s Trill“ auf „The Devil’s Sonata“.
Offenbar träumte er eines Nachts im Jahr 1713, dass er im Austausch für seine Seele einen Pakt mit dem Teufel selbst geschlossen hatte. Alles verlief nach seinen Vorstellungen, denn der Teufel erfüllte alle Wünsche, die Tartini verlangte: Unter anderem bat er den Teufel darum, dass er für ihn auf der Geige spielen solle, um zu sehen, ob dieser dazu in der Lage sei. Wie groß war das Erstaunen, eine so wunderbare und schöne Sonate zu hören, die mit solcher Kunst und Intelligenz gespielt wurde. Der Teufel entlockte dem Instrument unmögliche Melodien und Klänge, die Tartini sich nie hätte erdenken können oder auch nur hätte erträumen können. Tartini war ekstatisch, entrückt und verzaubert. Er war so aufgeregt, dass ihm der Atem stockte und er aus seinem Traum erwachte.

Sofort nahm er seine Geige in die Hand, um wenigstens einen Teil dessen, was er im Traum gehört hatte, festzuhalten und aufzuschreiben. Aber vergeblich. Tartini ging so weit, in einem seiner Manuskripte zu erklären, dass die Musik, die er damals komponierte, zweifellos die beste war, die er je geschrieben hatte. Aber sie war so minderwertig im Vergleich zu dem, was er in seinen Träumen gehört hatte.

Unmögliche Töne

Noch einmal zurück zu SIGNUM DRACONIS und dem finalen Gitarrensolo des Songs „Lucifer“. Wenn Sie es sich anhören, werden Sie erkennen, dass es eigentlich das Werk vom Meister Tartini „The Devil’s Trill“ ist. Ich stellte mir vor, dass Tartini in der Zeit zurückreisen und den Klang einer elektrischen Gitarre oder moderner Musik hören könnte. Die Klänge würden ihm unmöglich erscheinen. Also habe ich einige Teile seines berühmtesten Werks extrahiert, sie geschnitten, modifiziert, einige Melodien durch die E-Gitarre ersetzt, um die bekanntesten Teile zu verschleiern. Schließlich habe ich alles zusammengesetzt und aufgenommen, wobei ich die Violine durch eine E-Gitarre ersetzt habe.

Letzte Worte

SIGNUM DRACONIS haben etwas Großartiges vollbracht. Für mich ist es die beindruckendste und ausgefeilteste Vertonung der ersten großen Geschichte ‚Dantes Inferno‘ als Teil der monumentalen göttlichen Komödie. Und ich bin so sehr gespannt, was die Band sich für die nächsten beiden großen Kapitel ausdenken wird. So könnte es zum Schluß es die monumentalste musikalische Umsetzung der ‚Göttlichen Komödie‘ aller Zeiten werden. SIGNUM DRACONIS (Facebook) have created for me with „The Divine Comedy: Dante’s Inferno“ the album of the year 2021 (Review). The occasion to write this article happened now on 05.02.2022. I got mail from Italy, namely from Oscar Grace (founder and guitarist of SIGNUM DRACONIS).

We from ‚metal-heads.de‘ create this magazine with pure passion and pure heart blood for Rock and Metal. We don’t earn any money with it. So of course we are happy when we are allowed to go to concerts for free, about which we then of course write a report. We are totally freak out when people send us physical copies of our reviewed albums as a thank you. But this is not always the case. So it’s not like our home music collection consists only of gifts.

But then there are also the moments that go beyond the above. And one of these special moments I would like to share with you.

A masterpiece

So I uncovered my box and two things came to light. One was the digipack of „The Divine Comedy: Dante’s Inferno“ and the other was a two-page letter from Oscar Grace, the founder of SIGNUM DRACONIS. Wow! I was floored by that! You don’t get personal letters too often as an editor.

immediately makes a very good qualitative impression.

When opened, the first thing I notice is the personal dedication in the middle. Oscar’s signature on the dedication is a work of art in itself. I wonder how long he practiced for that? But it doesn’t stop there.

If you take the two CDs out, more beautiful pictures reveal themselves behind the transparent plastic. So every place has been used to visually enhance the packaging.

Lovely details

After I have already thrown the first CD into the player, I turn to the booklet. This is the absolute madness. In addition to the lyrics (and there are quite a few of them with a playing time of over 90 minutes) there are impressive illustrations that document the impressive poetic work. This is beautiful!

It immediately occurred to me that this would be the perfect template for a large-format earbook. I would buy that immediately. Because this booklet actually deserves a larger format and would make even more of an impression. As it is, the font and the little pictures are unfortunately small due to the format.

But hey… SIGNUM DRACONIS are at the beginning and something like this requires some financial effort in advance, which you just can’t afford at this stage. Nevertheless, this digipack is a visual highlight. And the musical content is incomparably ingenious. Not for nothing „The Divine Comedy: Dante’s Inferno“ became my album of the year 2021.

Secrets

And now for the second part of the unboxing! The letter! In the first lines of the letter my heart was warmed by emotional words of thanks. I was very touched by this. To this I must say that I have never heard of this band before receiving the promo material. But that has never been important to me! I listen to everything I can get my ears on. It doesn’t always have to be the big names that excite me. Either it grabs me or it doesn’t! It doesn’t matter if it’s well-known bands or not!

The letter revealed not only heartwarming words. It also contained two secrets about the album. These only underline the fact with what meticulousness Oscar Grace approached the realization of the poetic work of the century. A whopping 11 years of creative work went into this project. And this is noticeable in every fiber of the album. But even I missed so-called Easter Eggs that were built into the album. So let’s get deeper into the matter:

The devil violinist

At one of the legendary concerts of the great violin virtuoso Niccolò Paganini (Wikipedia), a completely blind spectator was sitting in the audience enjoying the evening. At a certain point in the concert, another spectator sitting right next to the blind man noticed:

„What wonderful music from this violinist!“

To which the blind man replied:
„Yes! Without a doubt, the violonist is fantastic! But the flautist who accompanies him is also very good.“

Puzzled, the man answered the blind man:
„What flautist? Only Maestro Paganini is on the stage.“

Annoyed, the blind man replied:
„That can’t be. I guarantee you that I heard exactly the sound of a flute. Please assure me that there is only a violinist on the stage.“

The man replied again:
„And I guarantee that only Paganini will be on stage. I can see him clearly. He’s standing a few feet away from me, and the rest of the stage is empty.“

At that moment, the blind man’s face became very serious. He took his guiding stick, stood up, walked to the exit, and just before leaving the room, turned around and addressed everyone present with loud shouts:
„This violinist is not human. He is the devil himself!“

Back to SIGNUM DRACONIS and the theme „Lucifer“. If you listen to this song in the intro, you will hear a flute and a violin. Listen carefully to the long sound the violin makes and you will realize that the sound of the violin is mistaken for that of a flute, alluding to the mentioned story.

The pact with the devil

On the other hand, we have the story of Master Guiseppe Tartini (Wikipedia) and his most famous compositions „The Devil’s Trill“ on „The Devil’s Sonata“.
Apparently, one night in 1713, he dreamed that he had made a pact with the devil himself in exchange for his soul. Everything went according to his wishes, because the devil fulfilled all the wishes Tartini asked for. Among other things, he asked the devil to play the violin for him to see if the latter was capable of doing so. How great was the astonishment to hear such a wonderful and beautiful sonata played with such art and intelligence. The devil elicited impossible melodies and sounds from the instrument that Tartini could never have imagined or even dreamed of. Tartini was ecstatic, entranced and enchanted. He was so excited that his breath caught and he awoke from his dream.

Immediately he took his violin to record and try to write down of what he had heard in the dream. But in vain. Tartini went so far as to declare in one of his manuscripts that the music he was composing at the time was undoubtedly the best he had ever written. But it was so inferior to what he had heard in his dreams.

Impossible tones

Once again back to SIGNUM DRACONIS and the final guitar solo of the song „Lucifer“. If you listen to it, you will realize that it is actually the work of the master Tartini „The Devil’s Trill“. I imagined that Tartini could travel back in time and hear the sound of an electric guitar or modern music. The sounds would seem impossible to him. So I extracted some parts of his most famous work, cut them, modified them, replaced some melodies with the electric guitar to disguise the most familiar parts. Finally, I put it all together and recorded it, replacing the violin with an electric guitar.

Last words

SIGNUM DRACONIS have accomplished something great. For me it is the best and most polished setting of the first chapter ‚Dantes Inferno‘ as a part of the ‚Divine Comedy‘. And I am so excited to see what the band will come up with for the next two big chapters. So in the end it could become the most monumental musical realization of the ‚Divine Comedy‘ ever.

SIGNUM DRACONIS (Facebook) aus Italien haben sich für ihr Debütalbum ganz schön was vorgenommen. Dabei geben sie sich nicht mit einem normalen Album zufrieden. Nein, sie haben etwas gigantisches erschaffen. Es ist ein Doppelalbum geworden, was mit einer unglaublichen Spielzeit von 95 Minuten auftritt. Wovon handelt dieses monumentale Album?

Die göttliche Komödie

Dantes Inferno dürfte jedem ein Begriff sein, denn diese Geschichte war schon Inspiration für viele Musiker und gilt als Meilenstein der italienischen Literatur. Dies ist ein Epos des italienisches Schriftstellers Dante Alighieri, der die „Die Göttliche Komödie“ erschuf. Er teilte sie in drei Abschnitte ein. Hierbei ist „Inferno“ der erste Teil und beschreibt Dantes Reise durch die neun Kreise Hölle. Darauf folgen die weiteren Kapitel „Purgatorio“ (Fegefeuer) und das „Paradiso“ (Paradies). Auch wenn sich schon einige in der Vergangenheit bereits der Thematik angenommen haben, so dürfte das Werk von SIGNUM DRACONIS eines der ambitioniertesten musikalischen Umsetzungen sein.

Gründer Oscar Grace von SIGNUM DRACONIS zu der Entstehung des Projekts:

Die Geschichte von SIGNUM DRACONIS beginnt 2010, als ich nach zwei Jahren, die sich wie eine persönliche Hölle anfühlten, in meinem Auto saß und in den Himmel starrte, als eine Botschaft zu mir kam, eine Vision, so klar wie der Tag: ‚Vertone die Göttliche Komödie!‘ In diesem Moment war SIGNUM DRACONIS geboren. Ich kehrte sofort nach Hause zurück und kramte ein altes Exemplar von Dantes Meisterwerk hervor, das ich schon seit Jahren besaß, und begann, es wütend zu lesen. Es folgten zwei volle Jahre des Studiums und der Recherche, in denen ich alle drei Bücher mehrmals las und sogar nach Florenz reiste, um das Haus des Dichters aus dem 13. Jahrhundert zu besuchen und zu versuchen, mir vorzustellen, wie es gewesen wäre, er zu sein, und wie die Welt aussah, in der er seine Geschichte lebte.

Ein gewagtes Unterfangen,

wenn man ein Debütalbum mit solchen Ausmaßen erschaffen möchte. Denn eine solch immense Spielzeit muss spannend und interessant befüllt werden, um den Hörer fesseln. Dies ist eine gewaltige Aufgabe und Herausforderung, zumal man sich im Vorfeld mit dem Werk selber auch erste einmal befassen muss, wenn man es musikalisch entsprechend würdigen möchte. Hierbei handelt es sich auch nicht um leichte literarische Kost. Alles beginnt

im tiefen dunklen Wald,

wo Dante mit seiner verirrten Seele umherstreift. Dort lauern ihm drei Bestien auf, die ihn weit ab in den ewig dunklen Teil des Waldes treiben wollen, wo er schließlich von Vergil (Geist des berühmten römischen Dichters) gerettet wird. Vergil wird zum Führer von Dante und geleitet Dante durch den Wald zum Tor, durch welches man die Kreise der Hölle betreten kann. Doch Dante ist zunächst nicht so ganz entschlossen diese Reise anzutreten. Warum sollte er auch? Doch die Rettung seiner großen Liebe Beatrice ist letztlich Grund genug, dieses Wagnis einzugehen.

Mit „In The Midway Of Live’s Journey“ wurde diese Einleitung in einem monumentalen Powersong verewigt. Dies ist ein epischer mit klassischen Chören verzierter Track, der mit einer bedrohlichen Stimmung spielt und eine dramatische Spannung aufbaut.

In der Hölle ist kein Platz für Balladen

und von daher findet sich die einzige Ballade in dem Kapitel, bevor Vergil und Dante die Hölle betreten. Im Song „The Mission Of Vergil“ erfährt Dante, der noch ein wenig zögert und zweifelt, dass er diese Reise für seine große Liebe Beatrice auf sich nehmen soll. Gastsängerin CHIARA MANESE übernimmt hierbei die Rolle von Beatrice, der großen Liebe von Dante. Sie bereichert das Ereignis mit einer unglaublich gefühlvollen Darbietung, die ihren Höhepunkt in dem zauberhaften harmonischen Duett mit den männlichen Vocals entfaltet. Daher beschert der Song mit dieser wunderbaren Sängerin insgesamt ein sehr inniges Erlebnis.

Eintritt in die Hölle

Eine männliche Stimme als Geschichtenerzähler (Renato Carrozzo) eröffnet die Reise des Dante in italienisch gesprochenen Worten. Hört sich sehr mystisch an und schafft schon mal die richtige Atmosphäre. Darauf folgt eine eindrucksvolle epische instrumentale Brücke, bis Sänger Max einsteigt. „Gate Of Hell“ ist kein einfacher strukturierter Song, sondern eher eine mit vielen spannenden Ideen getränkte musikalische Offenbarung.

„Gate Of Hell“ wird zu Beginn rein symphonisch eingeleitet und Ihr werdet direkt tief in die Atmosphäre hineingezogen. Die langsam einsetzenden Trommeln leiten den Übergang zur Herrschaft des Metal ein und der Song lässt brachial die Fetzen fliegen. Die Stimme von Max Morelli gesellt sich kraftvoll und ekstatisch dazu.

Kapitel III von „Inferno“, einer der bekanntesten Gesänge der gesamten Göttlichen Komödie, spiegelt den Moment wider, in dem Dante und Virgilio an der Pforte der Hölle ankommen und jene berühmten Worte lesen, die als Warnung auf die Tür geschrieben sind. Diese Verse wurden mit besonderem Interesse behandelt, wobei das Gewicht zurückgenommen und dem klassischen Orchester der absolute Vorrang eingeräumt wurde.  

Als Kuriosum muss ich sagen, dass mich die Inspiration für die Melodie des Intros in meiner Freizeit überrascht hat, und da sie mir perfekt erschien, war ich gezwungen, sie auf eine Serviette zu schreiben.  Während des Liedes werden wir ein weiteres Duett hören können, dieses Mal von unserem Sänger Max Morelli in der Rolle des Dante und Herrn Mark Boals als Virgil.  Am Ende des Liedes betritt Charon, der Fährmann, die Szene, gespielt von unserem Gaststar Ben Jackson, den sicher jeder als Gitarristen der mythischen Band CRIMSON GLORY kennt.

Die neun Kreise der Hölle

gilt es für Dante zu durchqueren. Dementsprechend wird es eine lange Reise und tatsächlich vertonen SIGNUM DRACONIS jede einzelne Etappe.

Es ist eine Reise, welche mit einem grundsätzlichen Thema versehen ist, aber die unterschiedlichen Kreise der Hölle schlagen sich auch in musikalischer Varianz nieder, wobei jeder Song versucht die Stimmung und das Thema bestmöglich umzusetzen. SIGNUM DRACONIS würdigen das Epos in allen möglichen Facetten.

„Under Eternal Rain“ ist beispielsweise ein wahrer Power Metal Song! Flinke Leads und ein dramatisches Orchester bestimmen den Song, die von einem rasenden Schlagzeug getrieben werden. Demzufolge ein Song, der nicht viel Zeit zum durchatmen lässt.

„In The Hands Of Titans“ ist dagegen ein höchst erhabener Midtempo-Song mit verdammt geilen Riffs und irren Keybordsolos. So was hört man nicht alle Tage. Der damit einhergehende melodische Gesang und die majestätischen Chöre machen den Song zu einem fantastischen Erlebnis. Insgesamt bestechen SIGNUM DRACONIS durch einen

spannenden Aufbau des Albums.

Dies liegt nicht nur an der Vielseitigkeit der Darbietungen und der damit verbundenen Aura des Albums, sondern auch an den geschickt eingewobenen super dargebotenen Hörspieleinlagen, die zusammen mit den stimmungsvollen Synthies die Atmosphäre zusätzlich verdichten ohne den musikalischen Fluß zu unterbrechen.

Die orchestralen Elemente werden zielgenau eingesetzt. Soll bedeuten, dass sie mal dominant oder in reiner Form dargeboten werden, dann wieder nur als Untermalung dienen oder auch mal ganz fehlen.

Zum Thema Orchester gibt’s es auch noch ein Statement von Oscar Grace:

Ich glaube, dass Dantes Inferno perfekt zum musikalischen Stil des Heavy Metal passt. Aber angesichts des epischen Ausmaßes und der kulturellen Bedeutung von Dantes Büchern wollte ich etwas anderes in die Musik einbringen, etwas, das ihr Erhabenheit und Eleganz verleiht. Zu diesem Zweck begann ich, Teile für ein Symphonieorchester zu schreiben, auf altmodische Weise, mit einem Füllfederhalter und Notenblättern und ohne neue Technologie, die mir die Hand führte.“

SIGNUM DRACONIS sprachen mit dem Dirigenten David Hernando Rico. Dieser zeigte sich sehr begeistert von dem Projekt und so entschied man sich für die Zusammenarbeit mit dem Symphonieorchester Bratislava. Das Ergebnis dieser professionellen Zusammenarbeit ist deutlich hörbar und vermittelt einen wahren Hörgenuß. So sind meine anfänglich leichten Zweifel

vom Winde verweht.

Das Projekt ist mit einer unfassbaren Freude am Detail umgesetzt worden. Es wurde an so viele Dinge gedacht und ein ungemein großer Aufwand betrieben, um den einzelnen Rollen in dieser Geschichte gerecht zu werden und das ganze Drama würdig zu vertonen. Für einen weiteren Vorgeschmack auf das Album begeben wir uns zu Kapitel 5 der Geschichte, „Whirlwind Of Lovers“. Hierzu noch einmal ein Kommentar von Mastermind Oscar:

Wir sind beim Gesang V der Hölle angekommen, der für viele der schönste Gesang der gesamten Göttlichen Komödie ist… die Hölle, die den Liebenden vorbehalten ist. Dante lädt uns in diesem Gesang ein, darüber nachzudenken, wie eine falsche Leidenschaft zur Dekadenz führen kann und dass sie nicht mit wahrer Liebe verwechselt werden sollte. Unser Gaststar, die wunderbare Sopranistin Ksenia Glonty, die die Rolle der Francesca spielt, betritt die Szene. Es ist ein Thema mit einem etwas kommerzielleren Stil, mit einem tragisch-romantischen Hauch, bei dem sowohl das Intro als auch das Outro einen fast gotischen Stil andeuten oder teilen, mit einem interessanten ersten Duell zwischen Keyboard und Gitarre im Solopart.

Willkommen in der Hölle der Wollust!

Ein intensiver Song, der perfekt passend von der o.g. Sopranistin Ksenia Glonty eingeleitet wird. Sie beginnt das Lied mit intensiv gesprochenen Worten, um dann fließend in den klassischen Soprangesang überzugehen. Das ist ganz großes Kino! Es folgt ein Schnitt in den melodischen Metalpart, wobei das instrumentale Duell zwischen Keyborder Filippo Martignano und Gitarrist Oscar einen wahren Höhepunkt darstellt. In seiner irren und schon fast chaotischen Ausstrahlung symbolisiert es für mich eindrucksvoll die Folgen von unkontrollierter Wollust und verhängnisvoller Leidenschaften, welche weit abseits der wahren Liebe existieren.

Fazit

SIGNUM DRACONIS haben mit „The Divine Comedy: Inferno“ ein großartiges Monument erschaffen. Sie haben der anspruchsvollen Herausforderung getrotzt und überzeugen auf ganzer Linie mit ihrer Vertonung eines Klassikers der Weltliteratur. Dies ist ein erhabenes Kunstwerk, welches für mich auf jeden Fall einen Platz in der Reihe der besten Konzeptalben gefunden hat. Ein Album voller Spannung und Drama, dass mit mit kreativer Vielfalt und künstlerischem Geschick durchtränkt ist. Eine intensive tiefgreifende Reise, die Euch mit einer faszinierenden Atmosphäre begeistern wird.

Symphonic Power Metal

SIGNUM DRACONIS (Facebook) from Italy have set themselves quite a task for their debut album. Thus they are not satisfied with a normal album. No, they have created something gigantic. Consequently this work has become a double album, which occurs with an incredible playing time of 95 minutes. What is this monumental album about?

The Divine Comedy

Dante’s Inferno should be familiar to everyone, as this story has been an inspiration for many musicians and is considered a milestone of Italian literature. The Italian writer Dante Alighieri created „The Divine Comedy“ and divided it into three parts. „Inferno“ is the first part and describes Dante’s journey through the nine circles of hell. It is followed by the other chapters „Purgatorio“ (Purgatory) and the „Paradiso“ (Paradise). Even if some have already taken up the subject in the past, the work of SIGNUM DRACONIS might be one of the most ambitious musical realizations.

Founder Oscar Grace of SIGNUM DRACONIS on the genesis of the project:

The story of SIGNUM DRACONIS can be said to begin in 2010, after two years crossing what felt like a personal hell, I was sitting in my car gazing at the sky when a message came to me as it were, a vision clear as day: ‘Put The Divine Comedy to music!’ At that moment SIGNUM DRACONIS was born. I returned home immediately and hunted out an old copy of Dante’s masterpiece I had owned for years and began furiously reading. Two full years of study and research followed, reading and re-reading all three books many times and even traveling to Florence to visit the 13th Century poet’s own house, trying to envisage what it would have been like to be him and the world in which he lived his story.

A daring endeavor,

if you want to create a debut album with such dimensions. Because such an immense playing time must be filled exciting and interesting to captivate the listener. This is a huge task and challenge, especially since you have to deal with the work itself in advance, if you want to appreciate it musically accordingly. And it is certainly not light literary fare. It all begins

in a deep dark forest,

where Dante wanders around with his lost soul. He is ambushed by three beasts who want to force him far away into the eternally dark part of the forest, where he is finally rescued by Vergil (ghost of the famous Roman poet). Vergil becomes Dante’s guide and leads Dante through the forest to the gate through which one can enter the circles of hell. But Dante is not quite determined to make this journey at first. Why should he? But saving his great love Beatrice is ultimately reason enough to take this risk.

With „In The Midway Of Live’s Journey“ this introduction has been perfectly implemented in a massive power song. An epic track adorned with classical choirs that plays with an ominous mood and builds up a dramatic tension.

In hell is no place for ballads

and therefore the only ballad is found in the chapter of the story before Vergil and Dante enter hell. In the song „The Mission Of Vergil“ Dante, who still hesitates a little and doubts, learns that he should take this journey for his great love Beatrice. Guest singer CHIARA MANESE takes on the role of Beatrice here, the great love of Dante. She enriches the event with an incredibly soulful performance, which unfolds its climax in the wonderfully harmonious duet with the male vocals. Therefore, the song with this wonderful singer gives a very intimate experience overall.

Walk into hell

A male voice as a storyteller (RENATO CARROZZO) opens the journey of Dante in Italian spoken words. Sounds very mystical and already creates the right atmosphere. An impressive epic instrumental bridge follows until singer Max enters. „Gate Of Hell“ is not a simple structured song, but rather a musical revelation soaked with many exciting ideas.

„Gate Of Hell“ is introduced purely symphonic at the beginning and you are directly pulled deep into the atmosphere. The slowly starting drums introduce the transition to the reign of metal and the song is pushing forward. The voice of Max Morelli joins in powerfully and ecstatically.

Chant III of Inferno, one of the best-known chants in the entire Divine Comedy, reflects the moment in which Dante and Virgilio arrive at the gate of Hell and read those famous words as a warning written on the door. These verses were treated with special interest, the weight falling and leaving the absolute prominence to the classical orchestra. 

As a curiosity, the inspiration for the creation of the melody for the intro, I have to say that it caught me by surprise in my free time and since it seemed perfect I was forced to write it on a napkin. During the song we will be able to listen to another duet, this time carried out by our singer Max Morelli in the character of ‘Dante’ and Mr. Mark Boals as ‘Virgil’. At the end of the song, ‘Charon’ the ferryman enters the scene, played by our guest star Mr. Ben Jackson, who everyone will surely remember as the guitarist of the mythical band Crimson Glory.

The nine circles of hell

is what Dante has to cross. It will be a long journey and indeed SIGNUM DRACONIS set every single stage to music.

It is a journey, which is provided with a basic theme, but the different circles of hell are also reflected in musical variance. For that reason each song tries to implement the mood and the theme in the best possible way. SIGNUM DRACONIS pay tribute to the epic in all possible facets.

„Under Eternal Rain“, for example, is a true Power Metal song! Nimble leads and a dramatic orchestra define the song, driven by frenzied drums. A song that doesn’t leave much time to breathe.

„In The Hands Of Titans“ on the other hand is a highly sublime midtempo song with damn awesome riffs and insane keyboard solos. You don’t hear something like this every day. In this case the accompanying melodic vocals and majestic choruses make the song a fantastic experience. All in all SIGNUM DRACONIS captivate with a

exciting structure of the album.

This is not only due to the versatility of the performances and the associated aura of the album, but also to the cleverly woven super performed narrative interludes, which together with the atmospheric synths additionally condense the atmosphere without interrupting the musical flow.

The orchestral elements are used precisely. This means that they are sometimes dominant or presented in pure form, then again only serve as background or are sometimes missing completely.

On the subject of orchestras, there’s also a statement from Oscar Grace:

I believe Dante’s Inferno perfectly suits the musical style of Heavy Metal, but given the epic scale and cultural importance of Dante’s books, I wanted to bring something else to the music, something that lent grandeur and elegance, and to that end, I began to write parts for a symphony orchestra, in an old-fashioned way, with a fountain pen and sheet music and no new technology to guide my hand.

SIGNUM DRACONIS spoke with the director of the Bratislava Symphony Orchestra. David Hernando Rico was very enthusiastic about the project and so it was decided to cooperate with them. The result of this professional collaboration is clearly audible and conveys a true listening pleasure. So my initial slight doubts before listening the album were

gone with the wind.

The project has been realized with an incredible joy in detail. So many things have been thought of and an immense amount of effort has gone into doing justice to the individual roles in this story and setting the whole drama to music in a worthy manner. We arrived at Chant V of Hell, which for many people is the most beautiful chant of the entire Divine Comedy… Hell reserved for lovers. Dante in this chant invites us to reflect on how a false passion can lead to decadence and that it shouldn’t be confused with true love. Enter the scene our guest star the amazing soprano Ms. Ksenia Glonty who plays the character of ‘Francesca’. It is a theme with a somewhat more commercial style, with a tragic/romantic air in which both its intro and its outro suggest or share an almost gothic style, with an interesting first duel between keyboard and guitar in the solo part

Welcome to the hell of lust!

An intense song that is perfectly appropriately introduced by the aforementioned soprano Ksenia Glonty. She begins the song with intensely spoken words, then smoothly transitions into classical soprano singing. It’s cinematic! A cut into the melodic metal part follows, with the instrumental duel between keyboarder Filippo Martignano and guitarist Oscar being a real highlight. In its mad and already almost chaotic charisma it symbolizes for me impressively the consequences of uncontrolled lust and fatal passions, which exist far away from true love.

Conclusion

SIGNUM DRACONIS have created a great monument with „The Divine Comedy: Inferno“. They have defied the demanding challenge and convince all along the line. This is a sublime work of art, which for me has definitely found a place in the ranks of the best concept albums. An album full of tension and drama that is imbued with creative diversity and artistic skill. An intense profound journey that will enthrall you with a fascinating atmosphere.
