Hi Jonas, thanx fort he chance to do this interview. My name is Amir, I´m a  drummer myself and interested into music, as long, as I can think back. Here at metal-heads.de, I´m doing basically everything and as I´m into prog music and associated styles, I got stuck with THE SEA WITHIN. So let´s get this started.

MH: first question…how and where do you like to spend your summer?

Ein Sommer mit Open Air Konzerten und Autocruisen…

Pretty much the way I´ve spend this summer so far. I did a lovely Italian/French/Spain tour in July with Steve Hackett, only outdoor shows. Nice weather. Then I spend a week in Corsica, drove around and decided on the day where to go and sleep. Then I have a few recordings to do, when I´m fed up with the sunshine. Recording bass for the upcoming Jordan Rudess-album.

MH: how did the idea to do THE SEA WITHIN come up and whose idea was it (who was the driving force)? When did you join in?

It was Thomas Waber (CEO Inside Out Music) and Roine Stolt who started to discuss if the world needed one more „supergroup“ They decided to go for it and asked me to participate. I got Tom Brislin, Marco Minnermann and Daniel Gildenlöw onboard. We started to compose individually and gathered the songs and met up in London in October 2017 and recorded the album.

MH: some oft he musicians involved (like Marco Minnemann or Roine Stolt) have been part of different bands and projects in the past. What was the interest to do another thing in cooperation with other musicians? What was your own motivation?

Wenn der FC Barcelona anruft…

My own motivation was that this was a chance to collaborate with great talents both instrumentally and compositional. It´s like you are a footballer and Barcelona FC asking you to join, you don´t turn that down, do you?

MH: how was the process in writing and recording all the songs, who had which part in that?

Everybody contributed to the project. Marco send me and Roine 25 tracks or something like that. Me and Roine wrote a bunch of songs even before asking the others, so we had plenty of material to choose from. I went to Daniel in Sweden to write a few days together. Then we tried to have democratic process choosing the songs. I think we picked like 90 minutes of music before going to the studio in London. Then we kind of produced it together on the fly.

THE SEA WITHIN – Interview mit Bassist Jonas Reingold

MH: of course one question, if a band or project releases a debut album is, whether there is a future together, meaning a second album in the future (I know, it´s hard to tell so shortly after the birth of number one, but how were the feelings and impressions!?)?

I think everyone is keeping the door open for a continuation of this band. We played the Loreley Nights of the prog in July and we´re booked for the Cruise to the edge 2019 in Feb. We are also currently looking into a European tour spring 2019 so after all that activity, we can make a decision, if we´re going to record a second one or not.

MH: can we expect a larger amount of live appearances around Europe in the coming months to see you guys and here all that music live on stage?

That will most likely happen yes. Spring 2019 

MH: what are your personal plans for the next months to come regarding the aspect of music?

Viel zu tun und keine Langeweile…

Right now I recording some bass tracks for a few albums. Then I have two releases to prepare on my Reingold Records, Lalle Larsson´s trio album and the Swedish band Carptree´s upcoming album. They will be released later this autumn. I´m also putting a Karmakanic box together. It´s been a demand for the first 2 albums and I will throw in a few extra cd´s with live takes, demos, unreleased tracks etc etc. I´ll start a tour with Steve Hackett in the last week of September. We´re doing a tour in the UK with a symphony orchestra, that will be exciting.

MH: finally our interview partners always have the last words and so now you can send out a message to all our readers out there…

Support live music by coming to the shows. Buy the stuff from your favourite artist. It´s important that people understand that shows/records/merch is the only income we can get to do, what we do. Spotify and all that is great for the consumer and to get the band out there, but it really kills the income for the bands, unless you have a billion streams.

Verderben viele Köche den Brei? Also hier haben wir bei THE SEA WITHIN (mit ihrem selbst betitelten Debüt „The sea within“) mit einer Ansammlung illustrer Musiker aus der einmal weit gefassten Rockszene zumindest einige Personen, die den bildlichen Kochlöffel in die Hand nehmen könnten. Was dabei herauskommt und ob das was taugt? Mal schauen…und mehr dazu erfahrt ihr im dazugehörigen Interview (siehe unten!).

THE SEA WITHIN – The sea within

Illustre Auswahl von Musikern und Sängern

Das Potenzial ist da. Der deutsche Drummer Marco Minnemann sitzt hinter der Schießbude. Den Bass spielt Jonas Reingold (u.a. THE FLOWER KINGS) und sein Bandkollege Roine Stolt zockt an der Gitarre. Für die Tasteninstrumente konnte man Tom Brislin gewinnen. Für den hauptsächlichen Gesang und die Bedienung einer weiteren Gitarre ist PAIN OF SALVATION´s Daniel Gildenlöw zuständig. Zu diesen Bandmitgliedern konnte man noch namhafte Gäste verpflichten. So setzen u.a. Casey McPherson und Jon Anderson ihre Stimme und DREAM THEATER-Tastenwizard Jordan Rudess seine besonderen Fingerfertigkeiten ein.

Musikalisch geht es eher gemäßigt los. Ein wenig bluesig, mehr jazzig. Aber es rockt auch noch genug. Gemächlich geht es auch mit Track 2 weiter. Aber bevor wir mit dem dritten Song – „The void“ – in die Sorge verfallen, dass es das schon gewesen sein soll, geht es mit Rock-Power und viel Drive mit dem nächsten Stück vorwärts. Sehr erfrischend. Es geht erst ziemlich straight los, aber es gibt in den 7 Minuten auch ruhiger Passagen. Dann nimmt das Ganze aber wieder Fahrt auf – teils dominieren längere Instrumentalpassagen. Ein starker Song. Daumen hoch! Dann geht es eher etwas allgemein weiter und plätschert vor sich hin…bevor das Material über eine etwas „dramatische“ und gut gelungene Überleitung in „Broken cord“ mündet. 14 Minuten hat dieser Track zu bieten. Da ist natürlich Raum für verschiedene Stimmungen. Es ist schwer, einen solch langen Song so zu gestalten, dass keine Langeweile aufkommt.

Enorme Songs – teils fast eine Viertelstunde

Aus meiner Sicht ist es gelungen. Und nicht zuletzt der Einsatz der Gastsänger wertet das Stück auf. Dann geht der reguläre Silberling mit „The hiding of truth“ zu Ende. Es hat für mich einen leichten Retro-Touch…jedoch ohne dabei angestaubt zu wirken. Man konnte ja – bei der Auswahl der mitwirkenden Musiker – die Sorge in sich tragen, es könnte zu proggig werden…dies ist nicht der Fall. Vielleicht – aus Sicht eines Prog-Fans – hätte es noch etwas mehr Progressivität sein dürfen…aber nun ja.

Umfangreiches Bonusmaterial von meist hoher Qualität

Das Special Edition 2CD-Digipak enthält 4 Bonustracks, die es immerhin auf eine Spielzeit von insgesamt 25 Minuten bringen. Manchmal ist so ein Bonusmaterial ja nicht so „wertig“, aber in diesem Fall ist es nicht einfach Masse, sondern hat auch die Klasse, die sich nicht vor den Songs auf dem eigentlichen „ersten“ Silberling verstecken muss.

Schon der erste Song ist sehr harmonisch und trotz 8 Minuten Dauer nicht langatmig. Das nachfolgende „Where are you going?“ gefällt mir fast noch besser. Es reiht sich ein und greift die bestehende Stimmung auf. Alles ein wenig nachdenklich, aber das ist ja in der heutigen von Eile und Tempo bestimmten Welt nicht verkehrt, oder!? Bei „Time“ schaltet man dann noch einen Gang zurück und es beginnt sehr andächtig, wobei da auch im Songverlauf keine große Steigerung eintritt.

Der letzte Track ist dann doch ein wenig gewöhnungsbedürftig. Und wenn man etwas als „verzichtbar“ beschreiben will, dann vielleicht „Denise“.

Insgesamt – eine klare Kaufempfehlung!

Fazit: großartige Musiker, die uns abwechslungsreiches Material servieren. Viele hochwertige Sachen sind dabei, aber – das muss man realistischerweise sagen – es gibt auch Kleinigkeiten, die keiner vermisst hätte, wenn sie gefehlt hätten. Alles in allem aber eine klare Kaufempfehlung!! Wir wollen für euch noch mehr zu THE SEA WITHIN in Erfahrung bringen. Deshalb ist auch ein Interview geplant und wir wollen Bassist Jonas Reingold auf den Zahn fühlen…also schaut mal wieder vorbei und lest, was er zu sagen hat.

Es dauert nur noch wenige Tage, bald kann man in Stunden rechnen. Dann ist es soweit und der geneigte Musikfan kann es endlich in Händen halten. Das Erstlingswerk von THE SEA WITHIN. Von wem? Tja, die Frage ist berechtigt. Ich erwarte nicht zwingend, dass ihr mit dem Namen der brandneuen Formation etwas anfangen könnt.

Wer sich für die einzelnen beteiligten Musiker interessiert könnte aus deren Dunstkreis schon etwas erfahren haben, ansonsten erfolgt jetzt hier bei metal-heads.de die Aufklärung. THE SEA WITHIN verorten sich im Art-Rock. Da sind einige echte Größen der aktuellen Musikszene gemeinsam am Start. Das heißt ja erst einmal nichts. Aber da kommt die geballte Kompetenz zusammen und verschiedene Einflüsse treffen aufeinander.

Art-Rock auf hohem Niveau

Von THE FLOWER KINGS Roine Stolt, PAIN OF SALVATION-Gitarrist Daniel Gildenlöw, aus dem Hause Steve Hackett oder THE TANGENT Jonas Reingold, ergänzt von Tom Brislin und nicht zuletzt der großartige deutsche Drummer Marco Minnemann. Da darf man mal gespannt sein, ob das eine Eintagsfliege wird, oder ob die vielen Musiker ihre Terminkalender auch in Zukunft aufeinander abstimmen können…

THE SEA WITHIN – und wieder ein neues Projekt!?

Es gibt auch schon erste Songs vorab, damit man sich einen Eindruck vom bald erhältlichen Material verschaffen kann. Zunächst wurde uns „Ashes of dawn“ vorgestellt. Hier könnt ihr euch selber mit eigenen Ohren eine Meinung bilden:

Und jetzt gibt es auch schon einen weiteren Track namens „Goodbye“ als Lyric-Video. Das Coole dabei ist, dass kein Geringerer als FLYING COLORS-Frontmann Casey McPherson die Lead Vocals übernommen hat. Hier könnt ihr euch das Stück zu Gemüte führen:

Viele Köche…wie schmeckt der Brei?

Jetzt habt ihr also schon einen guten Einblick in das kommende Material. Ich finde es stark, nicht zu proggig (trotz der beteiligten Musiker!), schön rockig und emotional. Dabei mit einem hohen Qualitätslevel…das ist große Klasse! Wir bemühen und darum, das gesamte Material für eine Review anhören zu können und vielleicht gelingt uns auch ein Interview…
