Zombeast – zurück nach einer langen Pause

Natürlich kam ich nicht umhin zu fragen, was es mit der langen Pause seit dem Debüt auf sich hat. Immerhin hat es fast zwanzig Jahre gedauert und wie es dann dazu kam, dass mit Fiend Force Records ausgerechnet ein deutsches Label Feuer und Flamme für „Heart Of Darkness“ war. Zu unser aller Glück waren sie es und Jared gibt ein paar Details preis. Positiver Nebeneffekt, mit einem deutschen Label im Rücken waren Zombeast nun schon zum zweiten Mal innerhalb eines Jahres auf deutschen Bühnen unterwegs. Selbstredend, dass wir da neugierig waren und ein wenig über die Unterschiede im Vergleich zu den USA hören wollten. Und natürlich gab es auch noch einen Exkurs zu den Einflüssen von Zombeast und einen kleinen Blick in die Zukunft. Aber schaut einfach mal selbst.

Zombeast setting the tone

Zombeast rallied the crowd and set the tone for the night with their blend of punk, thrash, and horror; before the show they were gracious enough to grant metal-heads.de an interview where they explained their origins and influences, which include Motörhead and Glenn Danzig. Their enthusiasm and energy was infectious to the already mostly-full venue, showcasing great new songs from their highly-anticipated 2024 release, „Heart of Darkness“.

Nekromantix and the coffinbass

Fog rolled across the stage as Nekromantix appeared, ready for an energetic set from across their expansive catalog of graveyard punk. Animated frontman Kim Nekroman drove the crowd into a bloodthirsty brain-eating frenzy twirling his signature coffinbass, sometimes plucking it sideways or sitting on it. Their intensity was matched by their precision, never missing a beat while calling out to the audience if we’d like to hear something even faster. To play on one of their hits, Life is a grave and the crowd dug it.

The Other thrilling and chilling for decades

From the right side of the stage, a group of costumed ghouls ran out into the crowd to ravenous applause; German horrorpunk legends The Other have been thrilling and chilling for more than 20 years and 9 studio albums, and the local gorehounds were ready to knock over some graves that night with a band that clearly was just as excited to bring some theatrical mayhem.

Goth rockers The 69 Eyes included Hell Nights on their 2 month tour celebrating the 20th anniversary of their classic album „Devils“; a perfect final act for the night, they brought their mix of glam, goth, and rock to the stage and an audience well-familiar with the songs, singing along with the horror cinema-inspired lyrics.

Just a few months ago Zombeast released their second album „Heart Of Darkness“ (click here for our review)and played their first shows ever in Germany. Unfortunately we missed them, but Jared (guitars) was so kind to answer some questions. And for all who missed Zombeast this time too. We are lucky, they will be back soon in Germany. And now first have fun with the video to „Red Ripper“ and then with the interview.

Zombeast – Jared explains the 20 year hiatus

metal-heads (MH): Hello Jared and thanks for taking the time. Your new album „Heart Of Darkness“ is out now for about two months and we really liked it. It is nearly 20 years since your first and self-titled  album. So what happened in between and what can you tell us about the band?

Jared: We all kinda just got caught up in the day to day grind of life. Some of us also lived two hours apart. We played with the idea in 2014 of doing Zombeast again and as soon as we were open to it, things got in the way. The initial plan with this reunion was a 3 song EP and a final show. Then Mario kept asking for more songs to write to, and here we are. It took longer than we wanted for „Heart Of Darkness“ to come out, but that’s largely due to the pandemic. 

MH: „Heart Of Darkness“ got some great reviews  and many mentioned Danzig as an influence and of course Mario really reminds of him. But with the way of the storytelling I also see King Diamond / Mercyful Fate as an influence. Am I right in that interpretation or can you tell me more about your influences?

Jared: Mario and myself are definitely MF/King Diamond fans. As for how much that influences Mario’s writing, I don’t really know. I suppose subconsciously everything we love musically influences something. That said, Mercyful Fate played a big influence on our song „Night Demon„. I’ve always dug how MF wasn’t afraid to use melodic riffs, even if it’s next to one of the heaviest riffs you’ve ever heard. But our influences are pretty typical. It can vary from Samhain to Slayer. I have a bit more of a post punk/goth taste whereas Mario digs The Animals, The Doors, and other older bands.

Zombeast and their connection to Fiend Force Records

MH: „Heart Of Darkness“ is released by Massacre Records, but licensed by Fiend Force Records, the label owned by Rod Usher (singer of The Other). How did you get together?

Jared: Much to my surprise Rod was a pretty big fan of the first Zombeast album. So during recording of „Heart Of Darkness“, he expressed interest. Once we finished the video for „Red Ripper“ we sent it over to him and I think his response was that it gave him chills or something along those lines. He then sent it over to Flo V Schwarz, and from there we started having web meetings. We really liked what they had to say, and organically it really kinda just flowed from there.

Jared about playing with Zombeast in Germany

MH: Recently you played some shows in Germany, starting in Cologne at the Valhalla Metal Pub. When I’m right those were your first shows ever in Germany or Europe. How was the experience for you and did you feel welcome?

Jared: Germany ruled straight up. It’s pretty insane to go to a country you’ve never been before and play to a crowd that knows your songs. Valhalla was more of a smaller intimate warm up show but it was full of people familiar with Zombeast. The next night was WGT in Leipzig and we played to massive crowd of 1500ish people. Not as many knew Zombeast – but it was an amazing experience and we made a lot of new friends that weekend. Seriously, we didn’t want to come home. Shout out to We’rewolf and The Die Die Darlings for all the help/back line.

MH: Are there differences in between playing here and in the US, aside from the shorter distances?

Jared: From our impression it seems that Europe, or at least Germany are a bit more appreciative of live music. The venues, the crowds, they’re so respectful. Everyone’s really invested in making the live show a success. There’s many great venues and clubs in the US but some of the crowds in the US could learn a thing or two. 

MH: For those who missed you in May, there are three upcoming shows around Halloween this year at the Hell Nights 2024. Do you have anything special planned?

Jared: We’re so stoked for these shows. We’re still new to the people of Germany, so the goal right now is to have a fun and diverse setlist. 

 MH: What are your plans for the future besides from this? We’re looking forward to hearing more from you.

Jared: I’m starting the process of working on new material at the moment. Most of „Heart Of Darkness“ was written with Mario and myself. This current line up of Zombeast are absolute monsters, so I look forward to writing new songs from the ground up with these guys.

Vor ein paar Monaten haben Zombeast ihr zweites Album „Heart Of Darkness“ veröffentlicht (unser Review gibt es hier) und ihre ersten Shows überhaupt in Deutschland gespielt. Leider haben wir sie da verpasst, aber Jared (Gitarre) war so freundlich uns einige Fragen zu beantworten. Und für alle die Zombeast auch verpasst haben, wir haben alle Glück. Bald spielen sie wieder hier in Deutschland. Und jetzt erst einmal viel Spaß mit dem Video zu „Red Ripper“ und dann mit dem Interview.

Zombeast – Jared erklärt die 20jährige Pause

metal-heads (MH): Hallo Jared und vielen Dank, dass du dir die Zeit nimmst. Euer neues Album „Heart Of Darkness“ ist nun etwa für zwei Monate draußen und hat bei uns großen Anklang gefunden. Aber seit eurem selbstbetiteltem Debüt sind nun fast zwanzig Jahre vergangen. Was ist in der Zwischenzeit geschehen und was kannst du uns über Zombeast erzählen?

Jared: Wir waren einfach im täglichen Trott gefangen und zum Teil leben wir zwei Stunden voneinander entfernt. 2014 spielten wir mit dem Gedanken wieder mit Zombeast anzufangen und sobald wir offen für die Idee waren, nahmen die Dinge ihren Lauf. Der ursprüngliche Plan mit dieser Reunion war eine3 Song EP und eine finale Show. Aber dann wollte Mario mehr Songs schreiben und hier sind wir nun. Es hat länger gedauert als wir wollten bis „Heart Of Darkness“ erschien. Aber das war hauptsächlich der Pandemie geschuldet.

MH: „Heart Of Darkness“ hat einige großartige Reviews bekommen und viele haben Danzig als Einfluss ausgemacht und Mario erinnert auch an ihn. Aber mit der Art und Weise wie ihr Geschichten erzählt, sehr ich auch King Diamond / Mercyful Fate als Einfluss. Liege ich damit richtig oder kannst du mir mehr über eure Einflüsse erzählen?

Jared: Mario und ich sind definitiv Mercyful Fate / King Diamond Fans. Inwieweit das Marios Songwriting beeinflust, kann ich nicht sagen. Ich denke, das unterbewusst alles was wir lieben uns musikalisch beeinflusst. Und ja, Mercyful Fate hatten einen großen Einfluss auf unseren Song „Night Demon“. Ich habe schon immer geliebt, dass Mercyful Fate sich nie gescheut haben ein melodisches Riff direkt einem der härtesten Riffs, die du je gehört hast, gegenüberzustellen. Aber unsere Einflüsse sind ziemlich typisch. Das kann von Samhain zu Slayer variieren. Ich komme mehr aus der Post Punk / Goth Ecke, während Mario auf The Animals, The Doors und andere, ältere Bands abfährt.

Zombeast und die Verbindung zu Fiend Force Records

MH: „Heart Of Darkness“ Massacre Records ist bei erschienen unter der Lizenz von Fiend Force Records, dem Label, welches Rod Usher (Sänger bei The Other) gehört. Wie seid ihr zusammengekommen?

Jared: Sehr zu meiner Überraschung ist Rod ein großer Fan des ersten Zombeast Albums. Daher hat er während der Aufnahmen zu „Heart Of Darkness“ sein Interesse bekundet. Und als wir das Video zu „Red Ripper“ fertig hatten, haben wir es ihm geschickt und ich glaube seine Antwort war, dass er Gänsehaut oder so bekommen hat. Er hat es dann an Flo V Schwarz weitergeleitet und von da an hatten wir dann web meetings. Wir mochten sehr, was sie zu sagen hatten und von da an ging es ganz natürlich und automatisch weiter.

Jared erzählt wie es war mit Zombeast in Deutschland zu spielen

MH: Kürzlich habt ihr einige Shows in Deutschland gespielt. Angefangen mit dem Valhalla Metal Pub in Köln. Wenn ich richtig liege waren das eure ersten Shows überhaupt in Deutschland oder Europa. Wie war es für euch und habt ihr euch willkommen gefühlt?

Jared: Deutschland war der Hammer. Es ist schon der ziemliche Wahnsinn in ein Land zu kommen, wo du nie vorher warst und dann dort zu spielen und die Leute kennen deine Songs. Im Valhalla war es mehr eine kleine, intime Warm Up Show, aber so viele Leute kannten uns schon. In der nächsten Nacht haben wir dann auf dem WGT in Leipzig vor einer großen Menge von etwa 1500 Leuten gespielt. Da kannten uns nicht so viele, aber es war eine atemberaubende Erfahrung und wir haben an dem Wochenende viele neue Freunde gefunden. Ernsthaft, wir wollten gar nicht zurück nach Hause. Shout Out auch zu We’rewolf und The Die Die Darlings für all die Hilfe / Backline.

MH: Gibt es große Unterschiede zwischen den Shows hier und in den USA? Abgesehen davon, dass die Entfernungen viel kürzer sind.

Jared: Wir haben den Eindruck gewonnen, dass die Leute in Europa oder zumindest in Deutschland Live Musik mehr zu schätzen wissen. Die Clubs, die Besuche, sie alle sind so respektvoll. Jeder bringt sich ein um die Show zu einem Erfolg und einem Erlebnis zu machen. Es gibt viele tolle Hallen und Clubs in den USA, aber einige der Besucher dort könnten ein oder zwei Dinge lernen.

MH: Für alle die euch im Mai verpasst haben. Um Halloween herum spielt ihr drei Shows bei den Hell Nights 2024. Habt ihr da was Besonderes geplant?

Jared: Wir freuen uns so auf diese Shows. Wir sind immer noch Neuland für die Leute in Deutschland und so ist das Ziel einfach Spaß zu haben und die Setlist zu variieren.

 MH: Was sind davon abgesehen eure Pläne für die Zukunft? Wir können es kaum erwarten mehr von euch zu hören.

Jared: Jetzt gerade habe ich schon angefangen neues Material zu schreiben. Der größte Teil von „Heart Of Darkness“ wurde von Mario und mir geschrieben. Das derzeitige Line-Up von Zombeast ist der absolute Killer. Daher kann ich es gar nicht erwarten zusammen mit den Jungs neue Songs zu erschaffen.

Heute stellen wir euch mit „Heart Of Darkness“ das Album der Band ZOMBEAST (Facebook) vor, welches mit Sicherheit am 17.05.’24 in der Metal Szene super einschlagen wird. Es sei kurz erwähnt, dass ich noch mit Bands wie DANZIG groß geworden bin. Glenn Danzig hatte als Sänger eine sehr charakteristische Stimme, die mich bis heute nach wie vor fasziniert. Die Songs „Mother“ oder auch das spätere „Dirty Black Summer“ liefen damals in den Clubs rauf und runter und nicht nur diese Songs haben einen Ehrenplatz in meiner persönlichen Hit-Historie.

Geile Vibes

Und als ich mit ZOMBEAST das erste Mal in Berührung kam, hatte ich genau diese Vibes und war umgehend in freudiger Erregung. Bei der Single „Red Ripper“ drängen sich die Erinnerungen an frührere DANZIG Zeiten förmlich auf. Und das ist beileibe keine schlechtes Zeichen. Sänger Mario Montechello hat eine ähnliche Stimme wie Glenn Danzig. Kraftvoll, lässig und einfach cool! Dazu gesellt sich der erdige düstere Rocksound und fertig ist ein super ausdrucksstarker Song, der einfach volle Kanne reinhaut. Die von Mario Montechello geschriebenen Texte behandeln verschiedene Themen: von den echten Schrecken des Lebens, vom okkulten Dingen und von Lykanthropie.

Bei „Red Ripper“ geht es um folgende Geschichte, wie Jared Smith erzählt:

In Marios Text geht es um die mörderischen Tiraden von Andrei Chikatilo (The Red Ripper), der über ein Jahrzehnt lang die sowjetische Wildnis terrorisierte. Die Musik für den Song hatte von Anfang an eine düstere Stimmung. Sie kam ganz natürlich aus mir heraus, und es machte Sinn, dass Mario sich dem Song textlich aus der dunkelsten Perspektive näherte, die ihm möglich war. Die Art und Weise, wie die gedämpfte Strophe und der treibende Beat die Spannung erhöhen, bis der Song in seinen donnernden Refrain ausbricht, ist einer meiner Lieblingssongs auf dem Album.

Tempomäßig hält sich das finstere „Red Ripper“ zurück, doch ZOMBEAST können auch anders. Und dies bekommt man auf dem Album direkt beim Opener „Devil’s Whore“ zu spüren. Die erste Minute wird mit einem melodisch Gitarrensolo eingeleitet, aber der „brave“ Modus wird dann umgehend abgestellt und es wird erheblich abgedrehter. Der Song galoppiert drauflos und die Leadgitarre macht zwischendurch ihre kleinen geilen Spielchen. Hier befinden wir uns volle Möhre im Punk-Modus. „Call Of The Wild“ tritt noch mehr aufs Gaspedal und wirbelt euch durcheinander. Der Song macht richtig Laune. Die Gesangslinien gefallen mir richtig gut.

Mitreißend und elektrisierend

Und wenn man denkt, das wäre schon alles geil und voll auf die Zwölf, dann fetzen plötzlich so absolut geile Trasher wie „Night Demon“ oder „The Cycle“ durch die Ohren. Die Songs haben richtig Pfeffer und grillen euch mit heißer Flamme schön knusprig durch.

Jared Smith kommentiert zu diesem Song:

Textlich geht es in diesem Song um Lykanthropie und die Raserei, die sie verzehrt. Der Gesang von Mario Montechello ist der aggressivste auf dem Album. Es ist der schnellste Song, den wir je geschrieben haben, und die Double-Bass-Aktion von Kyle Smith während des Pre-Chorus erzeugt einfach eine massive Soundwand, die an Metallicas „Dyers Eve“ erinnert“. Der Duell-Gitarren-Breakdown wurde ebenfalls in der Nacht vor dem Studiobesuch geschrieben, und ich denke, wir haben ihn gut hinbekommen, wenn man bedenkt, dass er in der elften Stunde geschrieben wurde. Die Musik auf meiner Seite wurde stark von AFI’s „Black Sails In The Sunset“ inspiriert.

„Heart Of Darkness“

tritt zwar nicht so aufs Gas, aber wir haben ja schon festgestellt, dass das auch gar nicht notwendig ist, damit ZOMBEAST einen intensiven charismatischen Song rauszuhauen. Im Vergleich zu den schnellen punkigen bzw. thrashigen Songs hat der Titeltrack einen eher doomigen Charakter, wirkt er genauso lebendig und verfehlt ebenfalls nicht seine elektrisierende Wirkung. Wenn man genau hinhört, bemerkt man auch hier die feinen Spielereien der Leadgitarre, die immer wieder für den melodischen Feinschliff sorgen.

„Dark Path“ als Schlusstrack ist übrigens ebenfalls ein feiner Song, der wie dunkle Zartbitterschokolade kräftig schmeckt und doch zart dahinschmilzt. Gefällt mir richtig gut, wenn der Sound zurückfährt, der Bass schwingt und der großartigen Stimme von Mario mehr Raum lässt.

Fazit

ZOMBEAST klingen old school und das ist gut so! Gerade in der heutigen Zeit schätze ich auch die Bands, welche den alten Sound bewahren und das Kunststück vollbringen diesen so dermaßen geil und mitreißend abzurocken. Dies ist ZOMBEAST mit „Heart Of Darkness“ hervorragend gelungen. Neben der elektrisierenden Gitarrenarbeit und den lebendigen Drums trägt auch gerade die charakteristische Stimme von Sänger Mario Montechello dazu bei einen rundum starken und individuellen Sound zu erschaffen.

Today we present „Heart Of Darkness“, the album by the band ZOMBEAST (Facebook), which is sure to be a big hit in the metal scene on May 17th. I should briefly mention that I grew up with bands like DANZIG. Glenn Danzig had a very characteristic voice as a singer, which still fascinates me to this day. The songs „Mother“ and the later „Dirty Black Summer“ were played up and down in the clubs back then and it’s not just these songs that have a place in my personal hit history.

Cool vibes

And when I came into contact with ZOMBEAST for the first time, I had exactly these vibes and was immediately in a state of joyful excitement. The single „Red Ripper“ brings back memories of DANZIG. And that is by no means a bad sign. Singer Mario Montechello has a voice similar to Glenn Danzig. Powerful, casual and simply cool! Add to that the earthy, dark rock sound and you have a super expressive song that simply kicks ass. The lyrics, written by Mario Montechello, deal with various topics: the real horrors of life, the occult and lycanthropy.

Red Ripper“ is about the following story, as told by Jared Smith:

Mario’s lyrics focus on the murderous tirade of Andrei Chikatilo (The Red Ripper) that terrorized Soviet wilderness for over a decade. The music for the song had a darker mood right from the start. It naturally flowed out of me and it made sense for Mario to approach the song lyrically from the darkest perspectives that he could. The way the palm muted verse and driving beat increase the tension until the song erupts into it’s thunderous chorus, it’s one of my favorite songs on the album

In terms of tempo, the sinister „Red Ripper“ holds back, but ZOMBEAST can do things differently. And you can feel this on the album right from the opener „Devil’s Whore“. The first minute is introduced with a melodic guitar solo, but then immediately things get a lot more crazy. The song gallops along and the lead guitar plays its cool little games in between. Here we are in full punk mode. „Call Of The Wild“ steps on the gas pedal even more and whirls you around. The song is really fun and I really like the vocal lines.

thrilling and electrifying

And just when you think it’s all awesome stuff, suddenly awesome trashers like „Night Demon“ or „The Cycle“ blasting through your ears. These songs are really hot and will make you freak out.

This song lyrically focuses on lycanthropy and the frenzy that consumes. This is some of Mario Montechello’s most aggressive singing on the record. It’s the fastest song we’ve ever written and the double bass action of Kyle Smith during the pre-chorus just creates a massive wall of sound reminiscent of Metallica’s „Dyers Eve“, The dueling guitar breakdown was also written the night before the studio and I think we nailed it considering it was written in the 11th hour. The music on my end was heavily inspired by AFI’s „Black Sails In The Sunset“.

„Heart Of Darkness“

doesn’t really step on the gas, but we’ve already established that it’s not necessary for ZOMBEAST to produce an intensely charismatic song. In comparison to the faster punk or thrashy songs, the title track has a more doomy character, it is just as lively and does not fail in having an electrifying effect on the listener. If you listen closely, you’ll notice the subtle playfulness of the lead guitar, which repeatedly provides the melodic finishing touches.

„Dark Path“ as the final track is also a fine song, by the way, which tastes strong like dark chocolate and yet melts away gently. I really like it when the sound is reduced, the bass swings and Mario’s great voice is given more space.

Conclusion

ZOMBEAST sound old school and that’s fantastic! Especially in these days, I appreciate bands that preserve the old sound and manage to rock it out in such a refreshing and rousing way. ZOMBEAST have achieved this brilliantly with „Heart Of Darkness“. In addition to the electrifying guitar work and the lively drums, the very charismatic voice of singer Mario Montechello also contributes to creating an all-round strong and individual sound.
