Hell Nights 2024
A plague doctor grabbed his beer from the bartender and took his place behind a cheerful man with an axe through the top of his head; a sea of mummies, vampires, ghouls, zombies, Frankenstein’s monster and Beetlejuice looked on in excitement as the lights dimmed. A lurking hangman threw his noose around members of the crowd as Zombeast took the stage, the first act for the annual Hell Nights at Carlswerk Victoria in Cologne. This year’s lineup for the beloved yearly Halloween event included aforementioned punk/horror/thrash metal favorites Zombeast, all the way from Arizona in America’s Southwest, psychobilly horror statesmen Nekromantix from the US by way of Copenhagen, Cologne local horrorpunk heroes The Other, and Finnish goth rockers The 69 Eyes, as well as a number of costumed walking acts to entertain and terrify crowdgoers.
Zombeast setting the tone
Zombeast rallied the crowd and set the tone for the night with their blend of punk, thrash, and horror; before the show they were gracious enough to grant metal-heads.de an interview where they explained their origins and influences, which include Motörhead and Glenn Danzig. Their enthusiasm and energy was infectious to the already mostly-full venue, showcasing great new songs from their highly-anticipated 2024 release, „Heart of Darkness“.
Nekromantix and the coffinbass
Fog rolled across the stage as Nekromantix appeared, ready for an energetic set from across their expansive catalog of graveyard punk. Animated frontman Kim Nekroman drove the crowd into a bloodthirsty brain-eating frenzy twirling his signature coffinbass, sometimes plucking it sideways or sitting on it. Their intensity was matched by their precision, never missing a beat while calling out to the audience if we’d like to hear something even faster. To play on one of their hits, Life is a grave and the crowd dug it.
The Other thrilling and chilling for decades
From the right side of the stage, a group of costumed ghouls ran out into the crowd to ravenous applause; German horrorpunk legends The Other have been thrilling and chilling for more than 20 years and 9 studio albums, and the local gorehounds were ready to knock over some graves that night with a band that clearly was just as excited to bring some theatrical mayhem.

Goth rockers The 69 Eyes included Hell Nights on their 2 month tour celebrating the 20th anniversary of their classic album „Devils“; a perfect final act for the night, they brought their mix of glam, goth, and rock to the stage and an audience well-familiar with the songs, singing along with the horror cinema-inspired lyrics.
