Progressive Metal

Ein sehr weitläufiges Feld stellt der Progressive Metal dar. Denn was diese Kategorie auszeichnet, ist die Tatsache, dass diese Bands bei ihrer Musik bewusst über Grenzen gehen und verschiedene Dinge in ihrer Musik vereinen und meist von einem hohen technischen Anspruch geprägt sind. Mein Kollege Doc Rock ist in diesem Genre mehr zu Hause als ich es bin, aber dennoch finden sich immer wieder Alben, die mich ebenfalls sehr begeistern. Und somit finden sich in METALHEADs Toplist 2022 folgende Bands:

ODDLAND

spielt progressiven Metal mit einer gesunden Härte und ohne sich allzu sehr in extreme Spielereien zu verrennen, obwohl ihre Kompositionen als kunstfertig zu bezeichnen sind. Ein Markenzeichen von ODDLAND (Facebook) sind die extravaganten melodischen Klangwelten, die hier neben dem Piano unter anderem mit einem Sopran-Saxophon erzeugt werden. Dieses wird von vom Gitarristen Jussi Poikonen selber gespielt. Von den Fähigkeiten der Band durfte ich mich auch schon live überzeugen.

„Vermilion Oceans“ ist ein kleines Kunstwerk geworden und offenbart die genialen Fähigkeiten der Band, die sich abseits von standardisierten Wegen bewegen. Die Band vermag es verschiedene Stimmungen zu erzeugen, die von mystischen über dystopischen bis hin zu harmonischen und sogar epischen Klangwelten geprägt sind. Dementsprechend facettenreich tritt auch Sänger Saki auf. Mit viel Gefühl oder aber auch Härte passt er sich den Stimmungen an. Viel Gefallen habe ich auch an dem fett schwingenden Bass gefunden, getreu dem Motto: Der Bass ist krass!

ARDARITH

ist ein ambitioniertes Metalprojekt (Facebook), an dem sage und schreibe 5 Sängerinnen und Sänger zusammen mit 11 Musikern mitgewirkt haben und das Album „Home“ erschaffen haben, welches eine bewegende Geschichte zu erzählen hat. Das Konzept beruht dabei auf einen Hauptcharakter namens „Me“, der aufgrund von Krieg und Verderben seine Heimat verlassen muss, um ein neues Zuhause zu finden.

Ein intensives Wechselbad der musikalischen Eindrücke erwartet den aufgeschlossenen Hörer. Die Songstrukturen sind teils herausgefordernd, bringen jemanden aber auch dazu sich das Album wieder und wieder anzuhören. Denn jedesmal gibt es etwas neues zu entdecken und die Songs entfalten mehr und mehr ihre Wirkung. Man könnte das Album als buntes Kaleidoskop der Klänge mit immer anderen neuen Eindrücken beschreiben. Genauso könnte man die Musik mi einem guten Buch vergleichen, das mit tollen Spannungsbögen und wechselhaften Szenarien unterhält. Von der Vielfalt der musikalischen Ideen wäre ARDARITH auf Platz 1.

AMORPHIS

AMORPHIS (Facebook) haben mal als Death Metal Band begonnen, sich aber im Laufe der Zeit der Fesseln entledigt und ihrem Sound immer mehr Facetten verpasst. Und so kommt es, dass das neue Album „Halo“ hier in der Kategorie Progressive Metal gelandet ist. AMORPHIS haben sich schon länger zu einer progressiven Band entwickelt. Die Arrangements sind nicht immer vohersehbar, neigen zu Überraschungen und man scheut sich auch nicht exotische Sounds einzubauen.

So wird man beispielsweise mittig im Song „Northwards“ von einem chilligen Part überrascht, der mit einem schönen melodischen Gitarrensolo garniert und anschließend völlig cool von einer Hammondorgel abgelöst wird, die man vorher schon im Hintergrund vernehmen konnte. Es gibt ein traumhaftes Duett mit „My Name Is The Night“. Ein zärtlicher Song mit der Sängerin Petronella Nettermalm, die hier eine hinreißende Leistung mit ihrer wunderschönen Stimme abliefert und im Duett mit Tomi Joutsen einfach nur wundervoll erklingt. Alles in allem ein hervorragendes Album, dass wieder einmal bestätigt, warum die Band so weit oben steht. Ein Album von AMORPHIS ist immer ein Erlebnis. Und wenn es nur um den Hymnenfaktor ginge, wären AMORPHIS an erster Stelle. (Review)

Aber für mich hat es eine Band geschafft, die immer wieder für Überraschungen sorgt und das sind….

OSYRON

aus Kanada sind für mich eine der Bands, die unbedingt viel mehr Aufmerksamkeit verdienen. Es ist nicht nur der hohe spieltechnische Level, der mich begeistert. Es ist auch die scheinbar grenzenlose Kreativität, mit der OSYRON (Facebook) ihre Songs erschafft. Ihre bisherigen Werke zeigen, dass sie sich in vielen Bereichen wohlfühlen. Das neue Album „Momentous“ war für mich deshalb schon wieder eine Überraschung.

Denn nun verpassen sie ihrem Sound einen Anteil authentischer Folk Musik. Genau solche Klänge bestimmen den Beginn vom Opener „Anunnaki“, die von der Band PERCIVAL SCHUTTENBACH (Facebook) stammen. Dabei handelt es sich um die Musiker Mikołaj Rybacki und Katarzyna Bromirska. Diese sind hin und wieder auf dem Album zu hören und das hört sich tatsächlich ziemlich cool an. Sie schenken der Musik eine ganz spezielle Atmosphäre. Und das neue Album ist härter und düsterer geworden als das, was man bisher gehört hat. Ein ganz neues Level, auch was die technischen Fähigkeiten angeht.

Die Range von Sänger Reed Alton ist außergewöhnlich und bemerkenswert. Diese zarte klare Stimme im Vergleich zu den kraftvoll gesungenen Parts bis hin zur totalen bösen Eskalation sind sehr eindrucksvoll. Neben dem fabelhaften Gesang von Reed glänzen alle Instrumentalisten der Band mit ausgezeichneten Skills. Die technischen Fähigkeiten sind auf einem sehr hohen Level und man kann nur Füllhörner voll des Lobes über sie ausschütten. So schaffen es OSYRON progressive Strukturen mit vielen Details zu erschaffen ohne den Hörer zu überfordern. Sie bewahren sich trotzdem mit großartigen Melodien und epischen Chören eine Eingängigkeit, die Euch immer wieder einfängt. Es entsteht eine atemberaubende Dynamik und man gerät immer wieder ins Staunen, was OSYRON alles in einem einzelnen Song aus dem Hut zaubern.

Und damit sind sie für mich das Highlight in diesem Jahr. Glückwunsch!

Progressive Metal is a big cosmos . Because what distinguishes this category is the fact that these bands deliberately sometimes more and sometimes less go beyond boundaries in their music and combine different things in their music. Mostly these albums are characterized by a high technical standard. My editor colleague Doc Rock is more at home in this genre than I am, but nevertheless there are always albums that also inspire me very much. And those would be this year:

ODDLAND

plays Progressive Metal with a healthy hardness and without getting too lost in extreme gimmicks, although their compositions can be described as artful. A trademark of ODDLAND (Facebook) are the extravagant melodic soundscapes, which are created here besides the piano among other things with a soprano saxophone. This is played by guitarist Jussi Poikonen himself. I was already able to convince myself of the band’s abilities live.

„Vermilion Oceans“ has become a work of art and reveals the band’s ingenious abilities to move away from standardized paths. The band is able to create different moods, ranging from mystical to dystopian to harmonic and even epic soundscapes. Accordingly, singer Saki also appears multifaceted. With a lot of feeling or but also hardness he adapts to the moods. I also liked the bass player ???? because the bass is really cool.

ARDARITH

is an ambitious Metal project (Facebook) in which no less than 5 singers have collaborated with 11 musicians to create the album „Home“, which has a moving story to tell. The concept is based on a main character named „Me“ who, due to war and ruin, has to leave his homeland to find a new home.

An intense roller coaster of musical impressions awaits the open-minded listener. The song structures are partly challenging, but also make someone listen to the album again and again. Because every time there is something new to discover and the songs unfold more and more their effect. You could describe the album as a colorful kaleidoscope of sounds with always new impressions. But in the same way the music is as interesting as a good book with great suspense arcs and changing scenarios. From the variety of musical ideas ARDARITH would be on place 1.

AMORPHIS

AMOPRPHIS (Facebook) once started as a Death Metal band, but in the course of time got rid of the shackles and gave their sound more and more facets. And so it comes that the new album „Halo“ has landed here in the category of Progressive Metal. AMORPHIS have been developing into a progressive band for quite some time. The arrangements are not always predictable, tend to surprises and they are not afraid to include exotic sounds.

For example, in the middle of the song „Northwards“ you are surprised by a chilling part, which is garnished with a beautiful melodic guitar solo and then completely cool replaced by a Hammond organ, which could be heard in the background before. There is a dreamlike duet with „My Name Is The Night“. A tender song with singer Petronella Nettermalm, who delivers a ravishing performance here with her beautiful voice and sounds just wonderful in the duet with Tomi Joutsen. All in all, an excellent album that once again confirms why the band is so succesful. An album by AMORPHIS is always a great experience. And if it was only about the hymn factor, AMOPHIS would be at first place. (Review)

But for me, one band has made it, always providing surprises, and that’s….

OSYRON

from Canada are for me one of the bands that absolutely deserve much more attention. It’s not only the high technical level that inspires me. It’s also the seemingly limitless creativity with which OSYRON (Facebook) creates their songs. Their previous works show that they are comfortable in many areas. The new album „Momentous“ was therefore already a surprise for me again.

Because now they included authentic folk music to their sound. Exactly such sounds determine the beginning of the opener „Anunnaki“, which come from the band PERCIVAL SCHUTTENBACH (Facebook). These are the musicians Mikołaj Rybacki and Katarzyna Bromirska. They can be heard now and then on the album and it actually sounds pretty cool. They give the music a very special atmosphere. And the new album has become harder and darker than what you’ve heard before. A whole new level, also in terms of technical skills.

The range of singer Reed Alton is exceptional and remarkable. This delicate clear voice compared to the powerful sung parts to the total evil escalation are very impressive. Besides the fabulous vocals of Reed, all instrumentalists of the band shine with excellent skills. Thus OSYRON manage to create progressive structures with many details without overwhelming the listener. They still keep a catchiness with great melodies and epic choirs that catches you again and again. A breathtaking dynamic is created and you are always amazed at what OSYRON conjure everything out of the hat in a single song.

And that makes them the highlight for me this year. Congratulations!

ARDARITH (Facebook / Homepage) als großes Metal-Projekt hat jüngst das Album „Home“ auf den Markt gebracht. Unter der Leitung von Max Pfaffinger ist ein progressiver Leckerbissen entstanden. Nein, eigentlich ist es kein Leckerbissen, es ist eher ein opulenter Hörgenuß, der sich aus verschiedensten erlesenen Musikerlebnissen zusammensetzt. Wer mehr über die Soundwelten von ARDARITH erfahren möchte, der möge sich bitte das Review (hier) durchlesen. Dazu kommt noch eine bemerkenswerte Idee hinter diesem Projekt, die sich in der wertvollen Lyrik widerspiegelt.

Für ‚metal-heads.de‘ war es daher natürlich ein Muss mehr über den Mann hinter dem ganzen Projekt und über die Hintergründe zu erfahren. So ist dank der persönlichen ausführlichen Antworten von Max ein sehr interessantes Interview entstanden, welches zum Nachdenken anregt.

Blockflöte als klassischer Einstieg

MH: Hi Max! Dein Metal-Projekt ARDARITH ist ein gewaltiges Unterfangen. So ein umfangreiches und anspruchsvolles Projekt schüttelt man ja nicht mal eben so aus dem Ärmel. Wo hast Du Deine musikalischen Erfahrungen bisher sammeln dürfen bzw. können?

Max: Servus Dirk. Ja, das kannst Du laut sagen. Ich habe den klassischen Werdegang eines jeden Rockstars durchlaufen: Blockflöte als Kind, dann ein paar Jahre Klavier und dann viele Jahre Gitarre. Hier habe ich schnell eine Band gegründet und bin so ins Songwriting gerutscht. Allerdings war die Band eine Hardcoreband und das Songwriting bestand aus fetten Akkorden und vielen Screams. Ein bisschen was aus diesen Einflüssen ist auch in Ardarith.

Die Kompositionen von „Home“ war dann viel Ausprobieren. Ich vergleiche das gerne mit dem Bau eines Hauses: wenn man das ganze Haus sieht, denkt man: heilige Mutter Gottes, sowas krieg ich nie zustande. Wenn man aber Stein für Stein zu Bauen anfängt und auch mal bereit ist, eine Mauer wieder einzureißen, kann man es schaffen. Und ganz genau so war es bei Ardarith auch (OK, ein Grundverständnis von Harmonien hilft).

Musikalisches Vorbild

MH: Wenn man ein musikalisches Vorbild nennen müsste, dann könnte man sicherlich die Band AYREON nennen. Was fasziniert Dich an dieser Band insbesondere? Hast Du ein Lieblingsalbum von der Band?

MH: Ja, Ayreon ist sicherlich eines der größten Vorbilder. Mein unangefochtenes Lieblingsalbum ist „The Human Equation“. Das hat mehrere Gründe: zum Einen war die damalige Liveaufführung des Albums (es hieß da „The Theater Equation“) für mich die Initialzündung, mit dem Projekt „Ardarith“ zu starten. Zum anderen verbindet „The Theater Equation“ aus meiner Sicht perfekt die Geschichte, die Musik und die unterschiedlichen Sänger.

Es kann für mich nicht voneinander getrennt werden. In dieser Ausprägung habe ich das so zum ersten Mal gehört und gefühlt. Abgesehen davon hat mich die Geschichte abgeholt. AYREON (oder auch das Zweitprojekt STAR ONE) hat ja häufig irgendwelche Sci-Fi Inhalte. Das ist schon OK, aber es catcht mich nicht so, wie Geschichten, die nah am Leben sind (deshalb mag ich auch „The Theory of Everything“ sehr gerne). Das war auch der Grund, warum ich für „Home“ eine (leider) sehr aktuelle Thematik gewählt habe.

Die dunkle Seite

MH: Doch der Sound von ARDARITH hat noch mehr zu bieten. Der Sound schlägt mitunter auch richtig hart und düster zu. Hast Du auch eine dunkle Seite? Was würde man noch so in Deiner Musiksammlung finden? Welches würdest Du als da extremste Album Deiner Sammlung bezeichnen?

Max: Haha, das ist eine gute Frage! Ich habe eine sehr düstere Seite (zumindest musikalisch). Für mich muss Musik, gleich welches Genre, vor Allem einen Zweck erfüllen: sie muss mich emotional fesseln (weshalb auch 98% der Popmusik für mich leider rausfallen). Gerade düstere und harte Musik, die es schafft, eine Atmosphäre zu kreieren, spricht mich deshalb total an. Deshalb stehen in meiner Sammlung neben den klaren Einflüssen wie AYERON, AMORPHIS, OPETH auch Scheiben wie SHINING – Halmstad (die ich für eine der besten und emotionalsten Black Metal Scheiben halte) oder Death – Individual Thought Patterns. Aber genau daneben stehen dann THE DOORS (die ich auch sehr düster finde) oder Amy MacDonald. Naja, es muss mich packen.

Das extremste Album meiner Sammlung…puh… Gar nicht so leicht zu beantworten. Ich nehm einfach BLOODBATH – ‚Nightmares made Flesh‘ (das meiner Meinung nach beste Bloodbath Album überhaupt).

Der Syrienkrieg

MH: Das Thema, welches dein Vorhaben zugrunde liegt, entsprang dem Syrienkrieg 2015. Kannst Du Dich noch an den ausschlaggebenden Moment erinnern? Welche Situation hat es genau ausgelöst und welche Gedanken gingen Dir in diesem Moment durch den Kopf?

Max: Ja, das war auf einer Party bei einem Freund von mir, der Menschen aus Syrien bei sich aufgenommen hatte. Ich habe mich mit einem unterhalten und er hat mir erzählt, wie das Leben in Aleppo (dort kam er her) war und was der ausschlaggebende Punkt für ihn war, zu fliehen. Und das spannende für mich war, dass er ganz normal gearbeitet hat und ein ganz normales Leben geführt hat. Wenn ein Angriff war, hat er sich unter dem Tisch versteckt bis der Angriff vorbei war. Aber als er auf dem Weg in die Arbeit im Stau stand und neben seinem Fenster eine Leiche auf der Straße lag, wusste er, dass er gehen muss.

Mich hat das damals tief beeindruckt, denn es ist nicht so, als wäre dort Krieg und alle würden die Koffer packen. Es ist so, dass man die vertraute Umgebung, die Freunde und Familie und die Kultur versucht zu halten, obwohl man vielleicht weiß, dass es besser wäre zu gehen. Und die inneren Kämpfe, die man hier mit sich ausfechtet, unterscheiden sich im Grundsatz nicht von allen inneren Kämpfen, die zwar meistens weniger drastische Auswirkungen haben, aber im Prinzip gleich funktionieren.

Und da war mein erster Gedanke: wir sind alle gleich und trotzdem maßen wir uns an, andere Menschen über einen Kamm zu scheren, zu verurteilen oder zu diskriminieren. Das hat mich sehr beschäftigt und ich habe Kontakt zu weiteren Menschen gesucht, die etwas Ähnliches erlebt haben (nicht nur Syrer, sondern auch im Familienkreis. Meine Schwiegermutter ist mit meiner jetzigen Frau und ihrer Schwester damals aus der Slowakei geflohen). Aus vielen Gesprächen habe ich dann den Hauptcharakter „Me“ und seine Emotionen entwickelt.

Eine Mammutaufgabe

MH: Das Projekt hat sich zu einem sehr großen Unterfangen entwickelt. Hast Du das vorher geahnt oder wuchs diese Mission mit jedem weiteren Schritt? Gab es Momente, in denen Du dachtest, dass es Dir zu viel wird?

Max: Ganz klar nein! Ganz im Gegenteil. Am Anfang, als ich aus dem Theater Equation Konzert kam, dachte ich: das kann doch nicht so schwer sein… Ist es doch. Vor Allem wachsen mit steigendem Umfang auch die Bedürfnisse.

Ein Beispiel ist der Song „Lay down to sleep“. Ja, ich wollte unterschiedliche Traumphasen musikalisch interpretieren. Aber wäre es nicht schön, wenn er von Zuhause träumen würde, mit einem arabischen Instrument? Also musste eine Oud her. Und wäre es nicht schön, wenn er seine Mutter ein arabisches Lied singen hören würde? Suche eine arabische Sängerin…. Und so weiter….

Und manchmal sitzt Du dann da, mit einer großen Liste an To-Dos und denkst Dir: das wird nie was. Für mich war der Vorteil, dass ich dann einfach mal sagen konnte: F… you! Ich mach irgendwann später weiter. Und dann ruft Dich Angela Gossow an und sagt Dir, dass sie eine Sängerin weiß, die perfekt für die Rolle der Guilt wäre. Und dann entzündet sich das Feuer wieder und brennt und brennt und brennt.

MH: Wie ist das optisch sehr schöne Cover-Artwork entstanden? Gab es Vorgaben von Deiner Seite? Welcher Künstler hat es entworfen?

Max: Das Cover stammt von Colin Winkler (www.mommono.de) der ein befreundeter Künstler ist. Dem habe ich bei einer Pizza gesagt, worum es im Album geht. Ich habe ihm alle Lyrics gegeben und als einzige Vorgabe gesagt, dass es an ein Ölgemälde angelehnt sein soll. Den Rest hat er gemacht. Spoiler: der erste Entwurf war perfekt.

Tolkien und das gemogelte ‚h‘

MH: Was bedeutet der Name ARDARITH? Ich nehme an, dass dieser auch eine bestimmte Bedeutung besitzt.

Max: Ja, in der Tat. Ich finde es immer unglaublich schwer, einen Bandnamen oder Projektnamen zu finden, der zur Musik passt, eine Message hat und nicht zu austauschbar ist. Ich habe mich dann für Ardarith bei Tolkien bedient. Arda heißt dort die Welt. Ich habe das Wort dann mit dem englischen „Spirit“ kombiniert, also Geist der Welt wenn man so will. Und weil ich fand, dass Ardarit wie Chemie klingt, hab ich das ‚h‘ dahintergemogelt, dass es besser klingt. Ist ja eh ein Kunstwort, also ist man da ja ziemlich frei. Positiver Nebeneffekt: wenn man es googelt, bin ich immer auf Platz 1, weil es das Wort sonst einfach nicht gibt.

Ein hochwertiges Produkt

MH: Die Kompositionen auf dem Album sind sehr anspruchsvoll. Das Vinyl-Packet ist von vorne bis hinten sehr hochwertig gestaltet. Das fängt beim Material der Gatefold-Hülle an, setzt sich beim Booklet und den zwei toll aussehenden farbigen Vinyls mit ihrem super Sound fort und vollendet sich mit der beigelegten CD und einem schönen großen Poster. Und das alles zu einem mehr als fairen Preis. Bis Du perfektionistisch bzw. detailverliebt veranlagt?

Max: Eigentlich gar nicht so. Oftmals bin ich so ein schnell, schnell Typ. Aber wenn ich für etwas brenne, dann will ich am Ende auch, dass es geil ist. So, dass ich mir denken würde: ist mir egal, was es kostet, ich will es haben. Letzten Endes muss das Gesamtpaket am Ende für mich stimmig sein. Und zur Musik und der Story passt das Cover und die Platten. Würde ich jetzt Deutschpunk machen, würden genauso viele Gedanken in allem stecken, es würde aber sicherlich ganz anders aussehen.

Das Ergebnis in Händen

MH: Beschreibe doch mal die ersten Gedanken und Gefühle, als Du nach jahrelanger Arbeit Dein Werk auf Schallplatte in Händen gehalten und gehört hast!

Max: Ui, das ist jetzt sicher ein Downer für viele. Man erwartet das absolute Glücksgefühl und Endorphine, die durch den ganzen Raum schwirren. Die Wahrheit ist: ich habe mich eine Minute gefreut, dass es so geworden ist, wie ich es mir vorgestellt hatte. Danach habe ich mir gesagt: so, jetzt müssen die Menschen auch erfahren, wie geil es ist

MH: Welches Erlebnis während der Entstehung des Albums ist Dir besonders in Erinnerung geblieben?

Max: Gute Frage. Es ist eigentlich kein singuläres Erlebnis, wo ich sagen würde: das war besonders. Vielmehr ist es das Erlebnis, mit so vielen Menschen in Kontakt zu kommen, die allesamt an einer Idee arbeiten, ohne sich zu kennen. Ich habe so viel telefoniert, konzipiert und gemanaged und es war einfach schön zu erleben, dass mein Feuer alle anderen angesteckt hat.

Struktur ist alles

MH: Welchen Musiker bzw. Sänger hast Du als erstes mit ins Boot geholt? Wie waren die ersten Reaktionen? Wie gestaltete sich die Zusammenarbeit mit so einer großen Gruppe von Leuten?

Max: Der erste Musiker war mein guter Freund Alex Göhs von Dante. Den hab ich abends zu mir auf ein Bier eingeladen, er saß auf der Couch und ich habe ihm die ersten Takte gezeigt. Er hat damals etwas in der Musik gesehen bzw. gehört und wir haben gemeinsam lange darüber gesprochen, wo das alles hinführen kann. Er war dann auch immer up to date was die Fortschritte anging und hat mir die Guide Vocals für die anderen Sänger eingesungen. Das hat er auch im Interview (ist auf Youtube) angesprochen.

Die Zusammenarbeit insgesamt ist eigentlich ganz einfach. Das liegt aber daran, dass ich eine sehr gute Idee vom Endprodukt im Kopf hatte und sehr zielgerichtet nach passenden Musikern suchen konnte. Danach geht es vor allem darum, alle Aufnahmen zu organisieren und immer sehr direkt zu schauen, ob alles passt. Es klingt eigentlich komplizierter, als es ist. Aber man muss schon sehr strukturiert sein, sonst verliert man irgendwann die Kontrolle.

Die Herausforderung

MH: Welche Passagen oder Momente auf dem Album haben Dir am meisten Kopfschmerzen bereitet bzw. waren besonders schwer umzusetzen?

Max: Musikalisch eigentlich keine. Klar gab es mal komplexere Passagen, wie zum Beispiel das Ende von Disclosure mit dem Chor aus allen Sängern. Aber in Summe ging das sehr organisch vonstatten. Und wenn ich mal bei einem Übergang oder einer Melodie in eine Sackgasse geraten bin, habe ich woanders weitergemacht.

Richtig herausfordernd waren die Lyrics und der Spannungsbogen der Geschichte. Es ist ja hier so, dass man über 9 Songs etwas erzählt, was auch einen Anfang und ein Ende haben muss, das sich logisch aus der Erzählung ergibt. Hier habe ich sehr viele Stunden geschrieben und gestrichen, geschrieben und gestrichen usw….

Etwas über sich selbst lernen

MH: Hast Du bei der Entstehung des Albums etwas über dich selber gelernt oder bestimmte Erkenntnisse gewonnen?

MH: Ja, definitiv. Um genau zu sein, war das ein andauernder Prozess. Meine Grundidee war eigentlich, in einen Menschen zu schauen, der seine Heimat verlassen muss. Beim Texten habe ich mich dann sehr stark mit den Emotionen auseinandergesetzt. Natürlich fragt man sich dann laufend, wie man selbst im Leben mit diesen Emotionen umgeht und was sie für einen als Menschen bedeuten.

So hat sich die Geschichte des Albums auch in gewisser Weise dahin entwickelt, dass die Suche nach dem „Zuhause“ weniger als Ort zu begreifen ist, sondern als Zustand. Es war nicht von vornherein geplant, dass das so kommt. Vielmehr war es eine innere Entwicklung von mir, die diese Richtung vorgegeben hat.

Am Ende steht für mich und auch für den Hauptcharakter des Albums die Erkenntnis, dass man sich ab dem Moment innerlich zuhause fühlt, wenn man akzeptiert, dass alle Emotionen ein Teil der eigenen Persönlichkeit sind. Dass auch Verzweiflung etwas Positives hat. Dass Schuld auch ein Antrieb ist usw… Das ist mir in dieser Ausprägung erst während des Schreibens so richtig bewusst geworden. Und ich bin da, behaupte ich, persönlich daran gewachsen.

Das Paradoxon Mensch

MH: Angesichts dessen, dass der Syrien-Konflikt den Anstoß für Dein Projekt gegeben hat, ist die Thematik des Albums aktueller denn je. Was empfindest Du bei den letzten Entwicklungen auf der Welt und insbesondere bei dem russischen Angriffskrieg auf die Ukraine? Ich persönlich betrachte die Entwicklungen mit großer Sorge. Es bereitet mir großes Unbehagen und mein früher unbeschwerter Optimismus ist angesichts der globalen Entwicklungen ehrlich gesagt größtenteils verschwunden.

MH: Das ist eine komplexe Frage. Zuerst einmal ist der Krieg in der Ukraine nur einer von vielen, der uns diesmal nur direkter betrifft. Natürlich war ich extrem schockiert, als das losging, aber sind wir ehrlich: Die ganze Welt ist immer wieder von Kriegen und Krisen betroffen, die teilweise deutlich schlimmere Auswirkungen haben bzw. hatten. Und es trifft immer diejenigen, die gar nichts damit zu tun haben. Deren Kinder verhungern, deren Familie von Bomben zerfetzt wird, die gefoltert oder vertrieben werden. Manchmal fragt man sich schon, ob das alles einen Sinn hat. Gerade wenn ich meine Tochter anschaue (die ist jetzt 8), frage ich mich, in was für eine Welt sie da gerade hineinwächst.

Auf der anderen Seite sehe ich, zu welchen Leistungen die Menschen fähig sind. Wir fliegen zum Mond, entwickeln Lösungen zur Energiegewinnung, können viele Krankheiten besiegen oder eben, wie in meinem Fall, gemeinsam Kunst erschaffen, die anderen Menschen Mut macht oder sie zumindest unterhält. Und das ist der Grund, aus dem ich weiter optimistisch bleibe. Ich kann keinen Putin ändern, ich kann keine AfD ändern, ich kann noch nicht mal mein enges Umfeld ändern. Aber ich kann selbst so leben und so handeln, dass ich die Welt in meinem kleinen Kreis zu einem besseren Ort mache. Und ich hoffe inständig, dass ARDARITH auch für andere einen kleinen Teil dazu beiträgt.

Wunschdenken?

MH: Die Erkenntnis des Charakters „Me“ in der Geschichte ist die, dass wir Menschen doch eigentlich alle die gleichen Emotionen und Bedürfnisse haben. Ist dies angesichts der ganzen gesellschaftlichen Konflikte und kriegerischen Auseinandersetzungen nicht doch leider reines Wunschdenken? Zeigt dies uns nicht, dass das eben genau nicht der Fall ist?

Oder sind manche Menschen einfach zu blind für diese Erkenntnis bzw. wollen sie diese Erkenntnis gar nicht haben? Denn es ist doch immer eine fanatischen Minderheit mit dem Streben nach Macht oder die extremistische Umsetzung von Religionen einiger Gruppen, unter denen das Gemeinwohl leidet, oder?

Max: Nochmal ein komplexes Thema. Du hast völlig Recht, dass die Geschichte lehrt, dass manche besser sind als andere. Dass Minderheiten unterdrückt werden können. Dass Gewalt ein adäquates Mittel ist, um Konflikte zu lösen usw.

Aber was würde passieren, wenn wir in aller Konsequenz beginnen, uns mit unseren Mitmenschen auseinanderzusetzen? Würden wir beim Dschihadisten nicht eine Liebe zu seiner Familie sehen, wie bei uns? Würden wir beim Nazi nicht das Bedürfnis sehen, geliebt zu werden, wie bei uns? Würde der russische Soldat nicht feststellen, dass der Ukrainer mit seinen Kindern auf den Spielplatz geht, wie er selbst zuhause auch?

Michelle Obama hat einmal gesagt

„Es ist schwer, aus der Nähe zu hassen. Es ist einfacher, wenn man eine Person durch einen Filter hasst“.

Das spiegelt sehr genau wider, was ich mit der Aussage, wir wären im Inneren alle gleich, sagen möchte: beschäftigt euch miteinander. Sprecht miteinander. Dann werdet ihr feststellen, dass die Gemeinsamkeiten deutlich schwerer wiegen, als die Unterschiede.

Und bevor jemand schimpft: Ja ich weiß, dass das kein Weg ist, den man mal eben so beschreitet. Aber wie ich vorhin beschrieben habe, kann ich selbst für mich diesen Weg gehen und mit meiner Kunst und meinem Album versuchen, den einen oder anderen da draußen damit zu erreichen.

MH: Gibt es bereits Ambitionen und Ideen für eine Fortsetzung Deines Projekts?

Ja, gibt es. Es gibt auch schon die Geschichte. Aber wann und wie ich damit starte, kann ich heute nicht sagen.

ARDARITH (Facebook / Homepage) as a huge metal project has recently released the album „Home“. Under the direction of Max Pfaffinger a progressive feast has been created, which is composed of the most diverse exquisite musical experiences. If you want to know more about the sound worlds of ARDARITH, please read the review (here). In addition, there is a remarkable idea behind this project, which is reflected in the valuable lyrics.

For ‚metal-heads.de‘ it was therefore a must to learn more about the man behind the whole project and the background. So thanks to the personal detailed answers of Max a very interesting interview was created, which makes you think about some things.

A classic career

MH: Hi Max! Your metal project ARDARITH is a huge project. It’s not easy to plan such a big thing. Where have you been able to gather your musical experiences so far?

Max: Hi Dirk. Yes, you can say that loudly. I have gone through the classic career of every rock star: Flute as a child, then a few years of piano and then many years of guitar. Here I quickly formed a band and slipped into songwriting. However, the band was a hardcore band and the songwriting consisted of fat chords and lots of screams. A little bit of those influences is also in Ardarith. The composition of „Home“ then was a lot of trial and error. I like to compare it to building a house: when you see the whole house, you think: holy mother of God, I’ll never get something like that done. But if you start building brick by brick and are willing to tear down a wall, you can do it. And that’s exactly how it was with Ardarith (OK, a basic understanding of harmonies helps).

Musical role model

MH: If you had to name a musical role model, you could certainly name the band AYREON. What fascinates you about this band in particular? Do you have a favorite album of the band?

Max: Yes, Ayreon is certainly one of the greatest role models. My undisputed favorite album is „The Human Equation“. This has several reasons: on the one hand, the live performance of the album at that time (it was called „The Theater Equation“) was the initial spark for me to start the project ARDARITH. On the other hand, from my point of view „The Theatre Equation“ perfectly connects the story, the music and the different singers. It can’t be separated from each other for me. In this form I have heard and felt it like this for the first time.

Apart from that, the story picked me up. Ayreon (or the second project STAR ONE) often has some kind of sci-fi content. That’s OK, but it doesn’t catcht me like stories that are close to life (that’s why I really like „The Theory of Everything“). That was also the reason why I chose a (unfortunately) very current topic for „Home“.

The dark side

MH: But the sound of ARDARITH has even more to offer. The sound sometimes hits really hard and dark. Do you also have a dark side? What else would one find in your music collection? What would you call the most extreme album in your collection?

Max: Haha, that’s a good question! I have a very dark side (at least musically). For me, music, no matter what genre, has to serve one purpose above all: it has to captivate me emotionally (which is why 98% of pop music falls out for me, unfortunately). Especially dark and hard music, which manages to create an atmosphere, therefore appeals to me totally.

That’s why in my collection, besides the clear influences like AYREON, AMORPHIS, OPETH, there are also discs like SHINING – Halmstad (which I consider one of the best and most emotional Black Metal discs) or Death – Individual Thought Patterns. But right next to them are THE DOORS (which I also find very dark) or AMY MAC DONALD. Well, it has to grab me.

The most extreme album of my collection…puh… Not so easy to answer. I’ll just take BLOODBATH – Nightmares made Flesh (in my opinion their best album ever).

The Syria War

MH: The spark that ignited your project came from the Syrian war in 2015, can you still remember the decisive moment? What situation exactly triggered it and what thoughts were going through your head at that moment?

Max: Yes, it was at a party at a friend of mine’s house, who had taken in people from Syria. I was talking to one of them and he told me what life was like in Aleppo (that’s where he came from) and what the decisive point was for him to flee. And the exciting thing for me was that he was working normally and living a normal life. When there was an attack, he hid under the table until the attack was over.

But when he was stuck in a traffic jam on his way to work and there was a dead body in the street next to his window, he knew he had to go. It made a deep impression on me at the time, because it’s not like there’s a war going on and everyone is packing their bags. It’s like trying to keep the familiar surroundings, the friends and family and culture, even though you might know it would be better to leave.

And the inner struggles that you fight with yourself here are no different in principle from any inner struggles, which usually have less drastic effects, but basically work the same way. And there was my first thought: we are all the same and yet we presume to lump other people together, to judge or discriminate. This has kept me very busy and I have sought contact with other people who have experienced something similar (not only Syrians, but also in the family circle. My mother-in-law fled Slovakia with my current wife and her sister at that time). From many conversations I then developed the main character „Me“ and his emotions.

Tolkien and the cheated ‚h‘

MH: What does the name ARDARITH mean? I assume that it also has a certain meaning.

Max: Yes, indeed. I always find it incredibly difficult to find a band name or project name that fits the music, has a message and is not too interchangeable. So for Ardarith I helped myself with Tolkien. Arda means the world there. I then combined the word with the English „Spirit“, so spirit of the world if you will. And because I thought Ardarit sounded like chemistry, I added the ‚h‘ to make it sound better. It’s an artificial word anyway, so you’re pretty free there. A positive side effect: if you Google it, I’m always at number 1, because otherwise the word simply doesn’t exist.

A huge project

MH: Did you anticipate this beforehand, or did this mission grow with each step? Were there moments when you thought it was getting too much for you?

Max: Clearly no. Quite the opposite. In the beginning, when I came out of the ‚Theater Equation‘ concert, I thought: this can’t be so hard… But it is. Above all, as the volume grows, so do the needs. An example is the song „Lay down to sleep“. Yes, I wanted to interpret different dream phases musically. But wouldn’t it be nice if he dreamed of home, with an Arabic instrument? So an oud was needed. And wouldn’t it be nice if he heard his mother singing an Arabic song? Looking for an Arab singer…. And so on….

And then sometimes you’re sitting there with a big list of to-dos and you think to yourself: This is never going to happen. For me, the advantage was that I could then just say: F You, I’ll continue later on. And then Angela Gossow calls you and tells you that she knows a singer who would be perfect for the role of Guilt. And then the fire ignites again and burns and burns and burns.

High quality product

MH: The compositions on the album are very sophisticated. The vinyl package is very high quality from front to back. It starts with the material of the gatefold sleeve, continues with the booklet and the two great looking colored vinyls with their super sound and finishes with the enclosed CD and a nice big poster. And all this for a more than fair price. Are you a perfectionist or detail-oriented person?

Max: Actually not at all like that. Often I’m a quick guy. But when I’m on fire for something, I want it to be awesome in the end. So I would think to myself: I don’t care what it costs, I want it. At the end of the day, the whole package has to be coherent for me. And the cover and the records fit the music and the story. If I were to do German punk music now, there would be just as much thought put into everything, but it would certainly look completely different.

The result in your hands

MH: Describe your first thoughts and feelings when you held your work on record in your hands and listened to it after years of work!

Max: Ui, that’s certainly a downer for many now. You expect the absolute feeling of happiness and endorphins buzzing all over the room. The truth is: I was happy for a minute that it turned out the way I had imagined. After that I said to myself: so, now people also have to experience how awesome it is

MH: What experience during the making of the album do you remember most?

Max: Good question. It’s not really a singular experience where I would say: that was special. Rather, it’s the experience of coming into contact with so many people, all working on the same idea, without knowing each other. I did so much phoning, conceptualizing, and managing, and it was just nice to see my fire infect everyone else.

Good planning is important

MH: Which musician or singer did you bring on board first? What were the first reactions? What was it like working with such a large group of people?

Max: The first musician was my good friend Alex Göhs from Dante. I invited him over for a beer in the evening, he sat on the couch and I showed him the first ideas. He saw / heard something in the music at that time and we talked together for a long time about where it could all lead. Then he was also always up to date about the progress and sang me the guide vocals for the other singers. He also talked about that in the interview.

The collaboration as a whole is actually quite easy. But that’s because I had a very good idea of the final product in my head and was able to search very purposefully for suitable musicians. After that, it’s mainly about organizing all the recordings and always looking very directly to see if everything fits. It actually sounds more complicated than it is. But you have to be very structured, otherwise you lose control at some point.

MH: Which passages or moments on the album gave you the most headaches or were particularly difficult to realize?

Max: Musically, actually none. Sure, there were some more complex passages, like the end of Disclosure with the choir of all the singers. But all in all it went very organically. And if I got into a dead end with a transition or a melody, I continued somewhere else.
The lyrics and the tension of the story were really challenging. It is so here that you tell something over 9 songs, which must also have a beginning and an end that logically results from the narrative. Here I have very many hours written and deleted, written and deleted etc….

Learning about yourself

MH: Did you learn anything about yourself or gain certain insights while making the album?

Max: Yes, definitely. To be exact, it was an ongoing process. My basic idea was actually to look into a person who has to leave his home. Then, when I was writing the lyrics, I was very much dealing with the emotions. Of course, you then constantly ask yourself how you deal with these emotions in life and what they mean to you as a human being. So the story of the album has also developed in a way that the search for „home“ is to be understood less as a place, but as a state. It wasn’t planned from the beginning that it would turn out that way. Rather, it was an inner development of mine that gave this direction.

In the end, for me and also for the main character of the album, there is the realization that from the moment you accept that all emotions are a part of your own personality, you feel at home inside. That even despair has something positive. That guilt is also a drive, etc… I only really became aware of this to this extent during the writing process. And I have, I claim, personally grown from it.

The human paradoxon

MH: Given that the Syrian conflict was the impetus for your project, the subject matter of the album is more topical than ever. What do you feel about the latest developments in the world and especially about the Russian war of aggression on Ukraine? I personally look at the developments with great concern. It causes great discomfort and my earlier carefree optimism has honestly largely disappeared in the face of global developments.

Max: This is a complex question. First of all, the war in Ukraine is one of many, except that it definitely affects us more directly. Of course, I was extremely shocked when it started, but let’s be honest: the whole world is repeatedly affected by wars and crises, some of which have much worse consequences. And it always affects those who have nothing to do with it. Whose children starve, whose families are torn apart by bombs, who are tortured or displaced. Sometimes you wonder if there’s any sense to it all. Especially when I look at my daughter (who is now 8), I ask myself what kind of world she is growing into.

On the other hand, I see what people are capable of. We fly to the moon, develop solutions for energy generation, can conquer many diseases or, as in my case, create art together that encourages other people or at least entertains them. And that is the reason why I remain optimistic. I can’t change Putin, I can’t change AFD, I can’t even change my close environment. But I can live and act in a way that makes the world a better place in my small circle. And I sincerely hope that ARDARITH will play a small part in that for others, too.

Only a dream?

MH: The realization of the character „Me“ in the story is that we humans actually all have the same emotions and needs. In view of all the social conflicts and armed conflicts, isn’t this unfortunately pure wishful thinking? Does this not show us that this is exactly not the case?

Or are some people simply too blind for this realization or do they not want to have this realization at all? Because it is always a minority with the striving for power or the fanatical conversion of religions of some groups, under which the public welfare suffers, or?

Max: Again, a complex issue. You are absolutely right that history teaches that some see themselves as superior to others. That minorities can be oppressed. That violence is an adequate means to resolve conflicts, etc. But what would happen if we began to deal with our fellow human beings in all consistency? Would we not see in the jihadist a love for his family, as we do in ours? Would we not see in the Nazi a need to be loved, as we do with us? Wouldn’t the Russian soldier see the Ukrainian going to the playground with his children, as he does at home?

Michelle Obama once said:

„It is hard to hate up close. It is easier when you hate a person through a filter.“

That very accurately reflects what I’m saying with the statement that we’re all the same on the inside: engage with each other. Talk to each other. Then you’ll find that the similarities outweigh the differences.
And before anyone grumbles: yes, I know that this is not a path to be taken lightly. But as I described earlier, I can walk this path for myself and try to reach one or the other out there with my art and my album.

MH: Are there already ambitions and ideas for a continuation of your project?

Max: Yes, there is. There is also already the story. But when and how I start with it, I can not say today.

Ein ambitioniertes Metalprojekt

Am 09.09.2022 wird das Album „Home“ von dem Metalprojekt ARDARITH (Homepage) erscheinen. Nun wird sich jeder fragen, wer und was denn nun dahintersteckt. Eine ganze Menge würde ich meinen. Sage und schreibe 5 Sängerinnen und Sänger zusammen mit 11! Musikern haben an diesem Konzeptalbum mitgewirkt, welches eine bewegende Geschichte zu erzählen hat. Ideengeber und Initiator des Projekts ist Komponist und Texter Max Pfaffinger. Er sagt zu dem Projekt folgendes:

Das ist für mich mehr, als nur einen Traum zu verwirklichen. Es ist für mich eine Möglichkeit, die Zuhörer zum Nachdenken zu bringen und etwas zu bewegen – für eine Message, die mir wichtig ist.

Max Pfaffinger

Die Story

Für seinen Traum hat Max eine Reihe fantastischer Musiker gewinnen können. Das Konzept beruht dabei auf einen Hauptcharakter namens „Me“, der aufgrund von Krieg und Verderben seine Heimat verlassen muss, um ein neues Zuhause zu finden. Der Zündfunke für diese Idee ist der Krieg in Syrien gewesen, der viele Einwohner zum Verlassen der Heimat gezwungen hatte. Was geht in den Menschen vor, die diese Reise auf sich nehmen müssen? Diese und ähnliche Fragen haben Max nicht losgelassen. Er hat sich mit diesem Thema vor allem auf der psychischen Ebene beschäftigt. Und wie aktuell dieses Thema leider immer noch ist, zeigt nicht nur der Krieg in der Ukraine. Es gibt auch Zustände an vielen Orten der Welt, die dramatische Folgen für die Einwohner haben.

Auf seiner Reise wird Me von 4 Emotionen begleitet, die alle von unterschiedlichen Sängern und Sängerinnen verkörpert werden. Die Reise zu einem „Zuhause“ führt zu der Frage, was „Zuhause“ eigentlich bedeutet. Der Hauptcharakter ist bewußt neutral gewählt und es könnte auch viele andere Betroffene repräsentieren.

Als Sänger und Sängerinnen haben mitgewirkt: Rob Lundgren (Reveal), Alina Lesnik, Daniel de Jongh (Textures, Crown Compass), Liv Jagrell (Liv Sin, Sister Sin), Alexander Göhs (Dante). Musiker von Megaherz, Haggard, Subsignal, Dante, Ayreon, Aeneas u.v.m. komplettieren das Ensemble.

Eine beschwerliche Reise

steht bevor, die vor allem seelisch viel abverlangt. Die Geschichte wird in neun Kapiteln erzählt. Ich bin mehr als gespannt auf diese Reise, denn das Konzept und die Gruppe der Mitwirkenden hört sich mehr als interessant an. Alles andere als ein progressives Gerüst wäre mit der Idee wohl auch kaum möglich, denn alleine die Idee mit den verschiedenen sehr gegensätzlichen Emotionen erfordert ganz unterschiedliche musikalische Stimmungen. Die Reise des Protagonisten sollte auf diesem Album weniger als eine physische, sonder mehr als spirituelle Reise verstanden werden, bei der es vor allem um den inneren gedanklichen Kampf emotionaler Wesenheiten geht, die ein Verlust von einer vertrauten Heimat nach sich zieht. Dieser Kampf eröffnet nach und nach eine andere Sicht auf sich selbst und bringt eine wichtige Erkenntnis mit sich.

Ein intensives Wechselbad

der musikalischen Eindrücke hat mich fast eine Stunde lang gefangengenommen. Nach dem ersten Hören war ich erst einmal fix und fertig. So viele Eindrücke sind auf mich eingeprasselt, dass ich mich erst einmal sortieren musste. Zu folgender Erkenntnis bin ich zunächst gelangt: An dieses Album muss man angesichts der Thematik und dessen Umsetzung mit Zeit und Aufmerksamkeit herangehen. Man muss aktiv zu hören! Nicht nur, um in die Gedankenwelt von Me einzutauchen, sondern auch um die ganze verschiedenen Facetten ausreichend wahrzunehmen. Die Songstrukturen haben mich teils herausgefordert, mich aber auch dazu gebracht das Album wieder und wieder zu hören. Und jedesmal entdeckte ich etwas neues für mich und die Songs entfalteten mehr und mehr ihre Wirkung. So möchte ich nun etwas näher auf die Reise von Me eingehen.

Die Entscheidung

Der erste Track „Prologue“ behandelt das grausame Dilemma von Me mit seiner Situation. Das Album beginnt ruhig und wehmütig mit Wellenplätschern, wobei diese Idylle plötzlich von unschönen Geräuschen abgelöst werden. Düsenjets, Bombenexplosionen, Schüsse und Alarmsirenen sind zu hören. So wird schon einmal verdeutlicht, warum Me seine Heimat verlassen muss. Krieg, Tod und Verderben vertreiben ihn aus seiner Heimat. Eine Alles-oder-Nichts-Situation entsteht. Entweder er schafft es loszulassen oder er wird untergehen. Er muss das Wagnis eingehen in die Fremde zu gehen. Das Finale des ansonsten eher bedächtigen Songs wird dann auch dramatisch und der harte Sound unterstreicht die Schwere der Entscheidung.

Leere hält Einzug

in die Gefühlswelt von Me. „Enter The Void“ startet mit spacigen Synhties (Ben Eifert), die sich auf dem ganzen Album finden und ein tolles Merkmal darstellen. Erinnert mich an die Band ACOLYTE aus Australien. „Enter The Void“ entpuppt sich als rifflastiger Power-Metal-Song mit sehr düsterer Attitüde, doch im Verlauf öffnen sich ganz andere musikalische Blüten von wunderbarer Schönheit. Die Gitarren verschwinden und der Song wird von klassischen Kompositionen bestimmt.

Hier hat auch die Violine ihre Premiere, wunderbar gespielt von Lisa Hellmich, welche mit ihren charmant traurigen Klängen den Hörer verzaubert. Progressiver kann man es kaum gestalten und es verlangt dem Hörer schon einiges ab. Ich war fasziniert von den überwältigenden Eindrücken und konnte mich immer mehr und mehr in die Geschichte fallen lassen und fieberte mit Spannung dem weiteren Verlauf entgegen. Das Finale in diesem Song mit der Hammond Orgel und dem Gitarrensolo kann man nur als genial bezeichnen.

Immer wieder neue Dinge

zeigen sich in den Kompositionen. Hier wiederholt sich wirklich mal überhaupt nichts. Jeder Song ist eine Perle, die immer wieder einen anderen Glanz erscheint… mal heller, mal matter oder auch schwarz. Alles ist wohldurchdacht, mit viel Geschick und musikalischem Gespür erschaffen worden. Ich könnte zu jedem Song eine ganze Rezension schreiben, weil es so viele Eindrücke zu verarbeiten gibt.

Es ist ein herausragendes Merkmal dieses Albums, dass die Songverläufe nicht einzuschätzen sind. Ich finde das sehr aufregend, wenn Songs den eingeschlagenen Weg verlassen, sich querfeldein bewegen ohne den Hauptweg aus den Augen zu verlieren und irgendwann wieder dorthin zurückzukehren. Nicht leicht umsetzbar und deswegen eine

hohe Kunst.

Exotisch wird es beispielsweise bei „Lay Down To Sleep“ mit seinem orientalischen Gesangseinstieg. Einfach irre, wenn nach traditionellen folkloristischen Gitarrenklängen diese verrückten Synthieparts erklingen.

Es soll allerdings nicht der Eindruck entstehen, dass die Songs keinen Flow haben und jegliche Eingängigkeit missen lassen. Dem ist nicht so. Es gibt genügend Passagen, die melodisch leicht zu erfassen sind oder wo es auch einfach bretthart zur Sache geht. „The Key“ ist beispielsweise trotz progressiven Aufbaus weniger experimentell ausgefallen als andere Songs. Er beginnt recht harmlos, entwickelt sich aber zu einem stürmischen Ritt.

Vor meinem Fazit möchte ich noch anmerken, dass die alle Beteiligten auf einem verdammt hohen Niveau abgeliefert haben. Jede Stimme und jedes Instrument bereichert den Sound auf seine eigene Weise.

Fazit

ARDARITH haben mit ihrem Album „Home“ musikalische Kunst erschaffen. Kunst, die vielleicht nicht für die Massen konzipiert ist, aber gerade deswegen ein besonders wertvoller Schatz ist. Nicht nur die Idee hinter der Geschichte ist lobenswert, sondern auch die Liebe und Akribie, mit der Max Pfiffinger als Komponist und seine Musikerschar aus Vocalisten und Instrumentalisten der Idee Leben eingehaucht haben.

Am Ende steht die Erkenntnis, dass jeder Mensch die gleichen Bedürfnisse und Emotionen in sich trägt („Inside we’re all the same“). Das Debütalbum ist damit Appell und Inspiration gleichermaßen, für Offenheit gegenüber jedem anderen Menschen.

Man könnte das Album als buntes Kaleidoskop der Klänge mit immer anderen neuen Eindrücken beschreiben. Genauso ist die Musik aber auch so interessant wie ein gutes Buch mit tollen Spannungsbögen und wechselhaften Szenarien. Dies mag Freunden geradliniger Musik und einfachen Strukturen zu viel des Guten sein. Doch ich finde es faszinierend. Man fiebert voller Neugierde der nächsten Seite, dem nächsten Song, dem nächsten Kapitel entgegen, ohne zu wissen, was einen erwartet, um sich schließlich von unvorhersehbaren Handlungssträngen überraschen zu lassen.

Ich empfinde das gesamte Konzept als äußerst stimmig und spannend umgesetzt. Nach ca. 20 intensiven Durchläufen des Albums finde ich keinen Grund einen Punkt abzuziehen. ARDARITH haben mit „Home“ eine wahre Perle im Prog Metal erschaffen.

Jeder Fan von progressiver Musik, die keine Grenzen kennt, muss einfach zugreifen. An ambitious metal project

On 09.09.2022 the album „Home“ of the metal project ARDARITH (Homepage) will be released. Now everyone will wonder who and what is behind it. As many as 5 singers together with 11! Musicians have collaborated on this concept album, which has a soulful story to tell. Idea giver and initiator of the project is composer and lyricist Max Pfaffinger. He says the following about the project:

For me, this is more than just making a dream come true. It’s a way for me to make the audience think and make a difference – for a message that’s important to me.

Max Pfaffinger

The story

For his dream, Max has been able to recruit a number of fantastic musicians. The concept is based on a main character named „Me“, who, due to war and doom, has to leave his homeland to find a new home. The spark for this idea has been the war in Syria, which had forced many inhabitants to leave their homes. What is going on in the minds of the people who have to make this not wanted journey? Max was very interested in these and similar questions. He dealt with this topic primarily on a psychological level. And how topical this subject unfortunately still is is not only shown by the war in Ukraine. There are also conditions in many places in the world that have dramatic consequences for the inhabitants.

On his journey, Me is accompanied by 4 emotions, all embodied by different singers. The journey to a „home“ leads to the question of what „home“ actually means. The main character is deliberately chosen to be neutral and it could also represent many other people concerned.

As singers have participated: Rob Lundgren (Reveal), Alina Lesnik, Daniel de Jongh (Textures, Crown Compass), Liv Jagrell (Liv Sin, Sister Sin), Alexander Göhs (Dante). Musicians from Megaherz, Haggard, Subsignal, Dante, Ayreon, Aeneas and many more complete the ensemble.

An arduous journey

is imminent, which will demand a lot from the inside in particular. The story is told in nine chapters. I’m more than excited about this journey, because the concept and the group of contributors sounds more than interesting. Anything other than a progressive framework would hardly be possible with the idea, because the idea alone with the various very contrasting emotions requires very different musical moods. The journey of the protagonist should be understood less as a physical, but more as a spiritual journey, which is mainly about the inner mental struggle of emotional essentials, which a loss of a familiar home entails. This struggle gradually opens up a different view of oneself and brings with it an important realization.

An intense emotional roller coaster

of musical impressions captivated me for almost an hour. After the first listening I was first of all somekind of confused. So many impressions have poured in on me that I had to sort myself out first. I came to the following realization: You have to approach this album with time and attention in view of the subject matter and its implementation. One must listen actively! Not only to dive into the world of Me’s thoughts, but also to perceive all the different facets sufficiently. The song structures partly challenged me, but also made me listen to the album again and again. And each time I discovered something new for me and the songs unfolded more and more their effect. So now I would like to go a little deeper into the journey of Me.

The decision

„Prologue“ deals with Me’s cruel dilemma with his situation. The album begins quietly and wistfully with waves lapping, though this idyll is suddenly replaced by unpleasant noises. Warjets, bomb explosions, gunshots and alarm sirens can be heard. Thus it is already made clear why Me has to leave his home. War, death and destruction drive him out of his home. An all-or-nothing situation arises. Either he manages to let go or he will perish. He must take the risk of going abroad. The finale of the otherwise rather thoughtful song then also becomes dramatic and the hard sound underlines the gravity of the decision.

Emptiness comes along

„Enter The Void“ kicks off with spacey synhties (Ben Eifert) that are found throughout the album and are a great feature. Reminds me of the band ACOLYTE from Australia. „Enter The Void“ turns out to be a riff-heavy power metal song with a very dark attitude. As the song progresses, the guitars disappear and the song is dominated by classical compositions.

Here also the violin has its premiere, wonderfully played by Lisa Hellmich, who enchants the listener with her charmingly sad sounds. As I said before crazy synths are also part of the game. You can hardly make it more progressive and it already demands a lot from the listener. I was very fascinated by the overwhelming impressions and could let myself fall more and more into the story and feverishly awaits the further course. The finale in this song with the Hammond organ and the guitar solo can only be described as ingenious.

Always new things

show themselves in the compositions. Here really nothing repeats itself at all. Each song is a pearl, which appears again and again another shine… sometimes brighter, sometimes darker or even black. Everything is well thought out, created with a lot of skill and musical sense. I could write a whole review to each song, because there are so many impressions to process.

It is an outstanding feature of this album that the song progressions cannot be estimated. I find that very exciting, when songs leave the chosen path, move cross-country without losing sight of the main path. Not easy to realize and therefore it’s a

high quality of art.

It gets exotic for example with „Lay Down To Sleep“ with its oriental vocal entry. Simply crazy, when after traditional folkloristic guitar sounds these crazy synth parts are coming in.

However, the impression should not arise that the songs have no flow and lack any catchiness. This is not so. There are enough passages that are melodically easy to grasp or where it goes also simply hard to the point. „The Key“, for example, is less experimental than other songs, despite its progressive structure. It starts quite harmless, but develops into a stormy ride.

Before my conclusion, I would like to note that all participants have delivered on a damn high level. Every voice and every instrument enriches the sound in its own way.

Conclusion

ARDARITH have created musical art with their album „Home“. This is perhaps not designed for the masses, but nethertheless it is a particularly valuable treasure. Not only the idea behind the story is commendable, but also the love and meticulousness with which Max Pfiffinger as composer and his band of vocalists and instrumentalists have breathed life into the idea.

In the end, there is the realization that every human being carries the same needs and emotions inside („Inside we’re all the same“). The debut album is thus an appeal and inspiration in equal measure, for openness towards every other human being.

You could describe the album as a colorful kaleidoscope of sounds with always different impressions. Equally, the music is as interesting as a good book with great suspense arcs and changing scenarios. This may be too much for friends of straightforward music and simple structures. But I find it fascinating. You eagerly await the next page, the next song, the next chapter, without knowing what to expect, only to be surprised by unpredictable plot lines.

Every fan of progressive music that knows no boundaries simply has to grab it. Thus, you should not wait too long with an order of the strictly limited vinyl package (500 pcs.).
