Interview mit MASTERS OF DISGUISE

Hallo, ich bin Uwe von metal-heads.de (Mh) und freue mich euch, dass ihr euch Zeit nehmt, mir einige Fragen zu beantworten.

Die Entstehungsgeschichte

Mh: Eure Entstehungsgeschichte ist sehr interessant und steht ganz wesentlich mit einer kurzen Reunion der US-Band Savage Grace in Zusammenhang. Könnt ihr unseren Lesern kurz schildern, wie das aus eurer Sicht gelaufen ist?

Master Of Disguise (MOD): 2009 nahm Chris Logue, Bandgründer und –chef der 80er US Speed Metal Heroes SAVAGE GRACE, Kontakt mit unserer NWOBHM-Tribute Band ROXXCALIBUR auf, weil er SG reformieren wollte und für die geplante Show auf dem Keept It True-Festival eine Backing Band benötigte. Chris selbst, der früher zuerst nur die Lead-Gitarre und später auch noch die Vocals übernahm, wollte oder konnte nur noch singen. Schnell wurde aus der Show eine Europatour, da das Interesse an SG sehr hoch war. Wir wollten gegen Ende des Jahres 2010 ein neues Album in Angriff nehmen, doch es gab persönliche wie auch –nun ja- juristische Differenzen und Chris musste untertauchen, um nicht belangt werden zu können. Seitdem ist er von der Bildfläche verschwunden. Da es aber schon Material für das neue Album gab und wir wussten, dass Chris nicht mehr mit SG in Erscheinung treten konnte, beschlossen wir, aus der Not eine Tugend zu machen und fragten einfach unseren Shouter bei ROXXCALIBUR, Alexx Stahl, ob er mit uns „diese SG-Sache“ weiterführen wolle. So erblickten die MASTERS OF DISGUISE das Licht der Welt, angelehnt an das Debütalbum „Master Of Disguise“ von SAVAGE GRACE aus dem Jahr 1985.

Das neue Album „Alpha / Omega“

Mh: Eure Wurzeln liegen im Speed Metal, aber auf dem neuen Album Alpha /Omega zeigt ihr euch sehr variantenreich, nehmt auch mal den Fuß vom Gas und spielt Songs, die eher dem Power Metal zugeordnet werden können. Habt ihr euch bewusst dazu entschieden, euer Spektrum zu erweitern?

MOD: Wir hatten ja schon in der Vergangenheit versucht, die engen Vorgaben des SG-Backkatalogs aufzuweichen und hier und da Nummern platziert, die sich auch im Midtempo-Bereich bewegen oder gar Akustikgitarrenparts besitzen. Auf Alpha/Omega sind wir aber noch einen Schritt weiter gegangen und haben die Herangehensweise beim Songwriting geändert. Es ging diesmal eher darum, den eigenen Vorlieben und Stärken mehr Gewicht zu verleihen, als zu versuchen, SAVAGE GRACE-Songs ins Jahr 2017 zu transportieren.

Mh: Beim Song „Knutson III: Nemesis (I Am The Law)“ habt ihr eine Gastsängerin mit an Bord. Könnt ihr uns verraten, um wen es sich dabei handelt?

MOD: Es handelt sich dabei um die Ehefrau unseres Gitarristen und Songwriters Kalli, der bis dato auch alle Alben produziert hat. Heike besitzt eine Gesangsausbildung und verleiht mit ihrer Stimme gewissen Songs das nötige Etwas. Es ist übrigens nicht ihr erster Einsatz, sie hatte in der Vergangenheit auf dem „The Savage And The Grace“-Album der „Scavenger’s Daughter“ ihre Stimme geliehen. Desweiteren war sie aber auch schon bei ROXXCALIBUR- oder ABANDONED-Produktionen zu hören, alles weitere Bands aus dem MOD-Umfeld.

Lieblingssong und Coverversion

Mh: Mein persönlicher Favorit auf Alpha /Omega ist der Titel „Shadows Of Death“. Habt ihr Stücke, die euch besonders gut gefallen oder habt ihr alle eure „Kinder“ gleichermaßen lieb?

MOD: „Shadows“ wird auch bandintern als Highlight angesehen, obwohl es „nur“ ein Midtempo-Song ist, haha. Aber wahrscheinlich stechen die langsameren Songs bei einer Band, die normalerweise Vollgas gibt, besonders heraus. Natürlich hat jeder seine Favoriten, was einerseits mit dem persönlichen Geschmack, aber andererseits auch mit dem Schwierigkeitsgrad zu tun hat, den jeder einzelne Song besitzt. Bei manchen Riffs kann es da schon mal zu Krämpfen kommen, wenn man nicht ordentlich warm gespielt ist.

Mh: Mit „Blackwitch“ von Exciter ist eine Cover-Version als Bonustrack enthalten, die euch wie auf den Leib geschnitten ist. Wie seid ihr auf diesen Song gekommen?

MOD: Bart Gabriel fragte uns letztes Jahr, ob wir nicht für seinen „Tribute to Exciter“-Sampler einen Song beisteuern wollen. Da Exciter als Kanadas Antwort auf Motörhead naturgemäß ziemlich räudig rüberkommen, wollten wir einen Song machen, bei dem Alexx mit seiner Stimme punkten kann, daher haben wir uns „Blackwitch“ ausgesucht. Ganz nebenbei ist dieser Song aber auch das wahrscheinlich ungewöhnlichste und zerbrechlichste Stück der kanadischen Rabauken und stellt für viele schon seit jeher ein Highlight dar.

Powermetal: Schlager mit Stromgitarren

Mh: Das Genre Speed-Metal führt mittlerweile – insbesondere in Deutschland – eher ein Schattendasein. Glaubt ihr, dass eine Wiederbelebung möglich ist?

MOD: Der klassische Speed Metal ist ja eigentlich nix Anderes als flott gezockter Heavy Metal, melodischer als Thrash und mit Klarstimme versehen. Das machen ja schon viele, heutzutage wird das aber als Power Metal verkauft, höchst Klischee-überladen und erinnert mich meistens an Schlager mit Stromgitarren. Grauenhaft. Insofern hast Du Recht, es bedarf einer Wiederbelebung von Bands, die das ganze aus Überzeugung machen und nicht, um auch ein Stück vom großen Kuchen abzubekommen. Aber ich denke, es gibt da einige Bands vor Allem auch in Deutschland, die dieses Feeling und diese Herangehensweise transportieren und einfach ihr Ding durchziehen. Ich denke, dass wir mittendrin und gerade Zeuge dieser „Wiederbelebung“ sind.

Zukunftspläne

Mh: Wie sehen eure Pläne für die nahe Zukunft aus? Sind Live-Aktivitäten geplant und könnt ihr uns schon Termine nennen?

MOD: Wir haben dieses Jahr noch zwei Gigs geplant, am 04.11. im Saarland bei der „Schlacht um Otzenhausen“ sowie am 16.11. in Mannheim mit den Senkrechtstartern von NIGHT DEMON. Ansonsten müssen wir gigtechnisch gerade kleinere Brötchen backen, da unser Shouter Alexx mittlerweile auch noch bei einer größeren deutschen Band (Anmerkung der Redaktion: BONFIRE) singt und da doch sehr viel zu tun hat. Daher fällt leider auch eine Tour zum Album flach. Aber wir bemühen uns, so viele Gigs wie möglich zu spielen.

Jack Starr im Interview

Hi, I’m Uwe from metal-heads.de (Mh). I’m glad that you take time to answer me a few questions.

Mh: Your new album “Stand Your Ground” will be released in a few days. I think it has the breath of the golden 80´s Power Metal-Sound. Is this right? And do you think there’s still a market for that kind of music?

Jack Starr (JS): Hi Uwe and a big hello to the metalheads reading this. You are right this is stylistically an 80’s metal album that happens to be released in 2017 but the truth is, I think that the engineering by Kevin Burnes and the production of Bart Gabriel is sonically much more complex and interesting than most of the heavy metal music from the 80’s including my own work from that time period. As far as whether there is a market for this kind of music? My answer is YES!

This is a style of music that will always remain alive. When I started the band Virgin Steele in 1981 I was one of the creators of what we now call Power Metal and I believe there will always be fans for this intense and melodic style of metal and I am proud to continue to make this music that I love and gratified that are many people who still want to hear it.

Musikeinflüsse

Mh: I’m a child of the 80’s and I absolutely like your new album very much. One of my favorites is the main title “Stand Your Ground” which is with over 10 minutes also the longest song of the album.  It has so much variety and reminds me of the long tracks from Iron Maiden. Can you live with this comparison?

JS: Yes I think it is a fair comparison but I am not influenced by Iron Maiden though I do think they are a great band, what is important to understand is that if there are any similar aspects in the music it is because I have been influenced by some of the same music that also influenced them, so I can say that we have this in common.

On the song that you mention the title track entitled „Stand Your Ground“, this song is quite long and has many different musical movements and time signatures and this is something that Iron Maiden also does but before Iron Maiden did this, the band Deep Purple was creating epic songs with different parts and time signatures in the same song and before Deep Purple there was a band called The Vanilla Fudge who were a big influence on Deep Purple who also recorded epic songs. So the point I am making is that everyone in music is standing on the shoulders of those that came before.

Europatour in Aussicht?

Mh: A lot of the songs seem to be written for a stage performance. Is there a chance that we can see you live on stage with Jack Starr’s Burning Starr here in Europe and especially in Germany soon?

JS: This is my dream to come back to Europe with Burning Starr and play these songs alongside our classic songs from the past albums as well and yes you are right, often when I am writing a song by myself or with Ned Meloni we try to envision the crowd at a concert and how they would react to different parts of the song and we will in some of the songs create parts that we know that an audience would want to sing along with as they did on our tour when the audience would sing along to the songs we played. For me the sound of an audience singing along to one of our songs is one of my favorite parts of playing a concert.

Das Line-Up

Mh: In the past your band line-up has changed very often. So are you satisfied with the status quo? Or can you even say that the recent line-up is one of the best you ever had?

JS: This lineup is a great, we have one of the best drummers in rock Rhino who was formerly in Manowar, we have one of the best singers in rock Todd Micheal Hall who also sings for Riot, we have one of the best bass players in rock Ned Meloni who played in bands with Joe Lynn Turner and Steve Whitman from Kix and on guitar some guy named Jack Starr who keeps playing better and better lol.

Musik-Business früher und heute

Mh: You can look back on a very long career in metal music. What do you think is the biggest difference between the business when you started playing music and these days?

JS: The biggest difference is that there are many more bands now and much more product because it has become easier for bands to make and produce albums but before this, the record companies decided who was good enough to make an album and so there was a certain standard that had to be met, for instance the first time I was on record was when the American guitar magazine Guitar Player put together a compilation album looking for the best unknown guitar players in the US and they choose me. I was contacted by the magazine and they told me that I had been picked to appear on the album and this opened the door for my band Virgin Steele to be signed by a record Label.

Verhältnis zu David De Feis

Mh: You became famous by playing with Virgin Steele. Do you have still contact with the bandleader David De Feis?

JS: No sadly I don’t and it’s not my decision. I think so much time has gone by that it’s time to forget all this and have a drink together. Also most of the time I can not be angry at some one for more than an hour. So to be angry at someone for more than 40 years is not something I can do and if Dave reads this, than I would say to him contact me and let’s talk and let’s remember all the good things we did and the great music we created and the many fans thru out the world that we made happy because this is what is really important.

Immer noch ein Meister an der Gitarre

Mh: Back to the presence:  on the new album your guitar play is still so impressive. What is your secret to remain in shape?

JS: Thanks for the compliment. I play everyday and like to perform as often as I can and I think that for a guitar player it is important to keep playing and this way you can grow as a player and perfect your art. I also feel that the more I play the more natural it feels and can be able to not think of the specific notes but instead just let the music flow from me in a more natural and organic way and lastly I really think that in the world of electric guitar playing. One of the most important things is having a good vibrato and the more you play, the better and more focused your vibrato will get.

For me if a guitar player does not have good vibrato I will not enjoy listening to that Player. Clapton, Brian May, Tony Iommi, Blackmore, BB King, Gary Moore, David Gilmore all have great vibrato. I have been working on my vibrato since I first started to play guitar. And I am just starting to be happy with it lately.

Zukunftspläne

Mh: A last question: what are your plans for the near future?

JS: My plans for the near future are to make this album as well publicized and promoted as possible and than go to Europe and do concerts. I am happy that the last Album „Land of the Dead“ did very well for us and I am sure this one will continue to help us grow our audience. So in closing I hope to see many of you on tour and hope we can raise a glass or two.

Traditioneller Heavy Metal mit Qualität

Chrystal Viper liefern auch auf ihrem neuen Album traditionellen Heavy Metal mit Tendenz zum Power Metal und dies – soviel sei vorweg verraten – in bester Qualität. Den Autakt macht – nach einem Eröffnungsschrei – mit dem programmatischen „The Witch is Back“ eine starke Midtempo-Nummer, die bereits Appetit auf mehr weckt. Hier könnt ihr euch selber davon überzeugen:

Starke Songs mit Gaststars

Weiter geht es mit „I Fear No Evil“, einer flotten Power-Metal Hymne mit coolen Screams, die nicht nur wegen des weiblichen Gesangs an die frühen Warlock erinnert. „When The Sun Goes Down“ ist ein getragener und superb gesungener Stampfer, der richtig reinhaut. Die folgende Ballade „Trapped Behind“ kann vor allem wegen des – wieder einmal – starken Gesangs von Sängerin Marta überzeugen. Bei „Do Or Die“ ist Ex-Manowar Klampfer Ross The Boss mit einem seiner typischen Gitarrensolos beteiligt. Entsprechend handelt es sich bei dem Song um eine echte True-Metal Hymne in bester Manowar Tradition.

Das Niveau bleibt hoch

Auch bei den weiteren Songs bleibt das Qualtätsniveau hoch. Zunächst folgt mit „Burn My Fire Burn“ eine weitere schnelle und eingängige Power-Metal Nummer, bevor uns mit „Flames And Blood“ ein schneller Nackenbrecher vorgesetzt wird, den Venom Legende Mantas mit einem Solo vereedelt. „We Will Make It Last Forever“ hingegen ist eine klassse Powerballade mit tollem Gitarrensolo, bei der Marta von Steve Bettney (Saracen) gesanglich unterstützt wird. Der reguläre Abschlusstrack des Albums ist mit „Rise Of The Witch Queen“ wieder eine schnelle und harte Nummer.

Verschiedene Versionen

Auf der mir vorliegenden CD-Version folgt mit „See You In Hell“ die Cover-Version eines Grim Reaper Songs als Bonustrack. Die fette Nummer mit dem eingängigen Refrain fügt sich perfekt ins Gesamtbild des Albums ein. Bei der Vinyl-LP ist als Bonustrack stattdessen eine Coverversion des Exciter-Klassikers „Long Live The Loud“ enthalten.

Crystal Viper mit triumphaler Rückkehr

Mit „Queen Of The Bitches“ feiern Crystal Viper eine geradezu triumphale Rückkehr. Das von Bart Gabriel hervorragend produzierte Album bietet eine große Anzahl erstklassiger Metalsongs. Für mich stellt das Album im Genre des traditionellen Metals ein echtes Highlight des noch jungen Jahres 2017 dar. Auf diese Formation kann Polen wirklich stolz ein! Würde mich wirklich freuen, die Truppe bald mal live sehen zu dürfen!

Chrystal Viper sind zurück! Nach 4 jähriger Pause, die gesundheitlichen Problemen der Frontfrau und Bandgründerin Marta Gabriel geschuldet war, geht es jetzt mit Volldampf weiter! Das Comebackalbum der polnischen Heavy Metal Band wird am 17. Februar 2017 erscheinen und den Titel „Queen Of The Witches“ tragen. Das Album befasst sich mit Hexen und dem wahrhaft Bösen und soll alle Elemente beinhalten, nach denen sich die Fans sehnen. Großartige Melodien, beeindruckender Gesang, klassische Metalriffs und Harmonien, eingängige Refrains und treibende Drums sollen uns geboten werden. Auf dem Album werden Headbanger Hymnen, Speed Metal Granaten und Power Metal Balladen enthalten sein.

Produktion und Cover

Produziert wurde das neue Werk der Polen von Bart Gabriel (Cirith Ungol, Sacred Steel, Mythra), der für einen klasssischen Metalsound gesorgt haben wird. Das Cover Artwork wurde von niemand geringerem als Andreas Marschall (Blind Guardian, Running Wild, Kreator) gezeichnet. Hier stellen wir es euch vor:

Es ist schon liebgewordene Tradition, dass Chrystal Viper den klassischen Metal Bands der 80’er Tribut zollen, deren Vermächtnis sie fortsetzen möchten. Auch auf dem aktuellen Album wird es nicht anders sein und man hat sich dafür einige bsondere Gäste eingeladen. Manowar Gründungsmitglied und Gitarrenhero Ross The Boss und der legendäre Jeff Dann (aka Mantas) von Venom sind mit Gitarrensolos bei 2 Songs vertreten. In einem Song wird zudem ein Duett von Marta mit Steve Bettney (Sänger der NWOBHM Cultband Saracen) zu hören sein.
