Vor einigen Tagen hatte ich Sänger David und Gitarrist Johan von der schwedischen Band VITTRA (Facebook/Homepage) im Interview (Link). Dort haben wir sowohl über die Debüt-EP „Wardens“ gesprochen als auch über das neue Album „Blasphemy Blues“, welches am 11.11.’22 erscheinen wird. Schon auf er EP „Wardens“ zeichnete sich ein gewisser Grad der Verrücktheit ab, den die Band in ihrer Musik verkörpert. Vor allem die Single „Necrotic Apocalypse“ machte dies sehr deutlich. Und das ist durchaus positiv gemeint, denn diese Verrücktheit versprüht eine

Lebendigkeit und Frische.

Somit hat man ein Merkmal, dass aus der Masse hervorsticht. Auf dem neuen Album hat sich der Sound ein wenig verändert bzw. entwickelt. Obwohl die Songs auf „Wardens“ schon von erlesener Qualität waren, so hat man den neuen Songs mehr Geradlinigkeit und einen dynamischeren Flow verpasst. Soll heißen, dass der peitschende Thrash-Metal-Anteil zugenommen hat. Es gibt viele Songs, die ein hohes Tempo fahren. Dazu zählt auch die erste Single „Samatra“. Hier kommt wieder einmal die Verspieltheit zum Ausdruck, indem der Beginn durch ein lebendiges Akustikgitarrenspiel eingeleitet wird und die Melodien dann von der E-Gitarre übernommen werden. Und schon beschleunigt der Song mit einer ungemeinen Energie, die Sänger David in sich aufnimmt und durch seinen Gesang noch weiter verstärkt. Die melodisch auffälligen Leads sind ebenso ein prägnantes Merkmal, das sich wunderbar hervorhebt.

Das Feuer brennt

VITTRA merkt man an, dass sie unter Feuer stehen. Sie haben einen unglaublichen Tatendrang, der sich in einer mitreißenden Energie manifestiert. So entfesseln VITTRA mit dem Bonustrack „Undead“ ein wildes bissiges Biest, das einfach teuflisch abgeht. Die Struktur ist eher klassischer Natur, eben so, wie man es von früher kennt. Einfach stur geradeaus mit Vollgas durch die Wand.

Anonsten ist der Sound strukturierter geworden und alles läuft harmonischer ineinander. Darüber hinaus zeigen sich tatsächlich rockige Vibes im Gitarrenspiel und auch die Soli sind hervorragend. Außerdem bieten die Songs eine schöne Varianz und haben ihre jeweiligen charakteristische Züge. Mir gefällt auch der Sound der Produktion. Die Tracks sind klar ausgearbeitet und der Sound hat trotzdem verdammt viel Druck, so dass der mitreißende melodische Flow und der starke Groove super rüberkommen.

Ein Hauch von Black

VITTRA vermögen es allerdings auch ohne Vollgas zu überzeugen und sind immer wieder für eine Überraschung gut. Was „Necrotic Apocalypse“ auf dem letzten Album war, ist „Sommerfödd“ auf dem neuen Album. Ein absolut spezieller Song, den ich genial finde, weil er eben anders ist. Das gilt auch für den lyrischen Inhalt, der die Hassliebe zum schwedischen Wetter thematisiert. Ich mag es, wenn man als Band auch mal ungewöhnliche Ideen umsetzt.

VITTRA liebäugeln zudem gerne mal mit Elementen des Black Metal, was bei diesem Song deutlich zum Ausdruck kommt. Kontrastierend schmückt sich der Song mit feinem zierlichen Frauengesang und anderen coolen Ideen. Alles ist vortrefflich miteinander verwoben worden, so dass auch diese Spezialität zu einem echten Highlight geworden ist.

Auch der Werwolf im Song „Lykantropi“ marschiert in einem ähnlichen Tempo los, versprüht witzigerweise durch die recht heiteren Leads eine gewisse Fröhlichkeit. Das Solo klingt sogar sehr unbeschwert. Dafür knurrt und beißt sich Sänger David standesgemäß durch den Song und füllt die Rolle des Werwolfs sehr gut aus.

Fazit

VITTRA haben ihr tolles Debüt noch übertroffen. „Blasphemy Blues“ strotz nur so vor lebendiger Energie, die den Hörer mitreißt. Die anregenden ideenreichen Songs wirken homogen ohne eintönig zu wirken und begeistern mit einer tollen Dynamik. Im grundsätzlich harten Sound entfaltet sich eine lockere beschwingte Art, die mit einer dämonischen Verrücktheit einhergeht. So bewahren sich VITTRA ihre Originalität.

English review

melodic death/thrash-metal

A few days ago I had singer David and guitarist Johan from the Swedish band VITTRA (Facebook/Homepage) in an interview (Link). There we talked about the debut EP „Wardens“ as well as about the new album „Blasphemy Blues“, which will be released on 11.11.’22. Already on the EP „Wardens“ a certain degree of craziness emerged, which the band embodies in their music. Especially the single „Necrotic Apocalypse“ made this very clear. And that is quite positively meant, because this craziness radiates a

vitality and freshness.

Thus, one has a feature that stands out from the crowd. On the new album, the sound has changed a little or better said developed. Although the songs on „Wardens“ were already of exquisite quality, so they have given the new songs now more straightforwardness and a more dynamic flow. That is to say that the whipping thrash metal influence has increased. There are many songs that drive a high tempo.

This also includes the first single „Samatra“. Here once again the playfulness is expressed, as the beginning is introduced by a lively acoustic guitar playing and then the melodies are taken over by the electric guitar. And already the song accelerates with an immense energy that singer David absorbs and amplifies even more through his vocals. The melodically striking leads are also a striking feature that stands out wonderfully.

The fire burns

VITTRA you can tell that they are under fire. They have an incredible drive, which manifests itself in a rousing energy. So VITTRA unleash with the bonus track „Undead“ a wild biting beast that just goes devilishly off. The structure is rather classic in nature, just as you know it from the past. Just stubbornly straight ahead to break down walls.

Otherwise, the sound has become more structured and everything runs more harmoniously together. In addition, actually rocky vibes show up in the guitar playing and also the solos are excellent. Moreover, the songs offer a nice variance and have their respective characteristic traits. I also like the sound of the production. The tracks are clearly worked out and the sound still has a hell of a lot of pressure, so that the rousing melodic flow and strong groove come across perfectly.

a touch of black

However, VITTRA are able to convince even without full throttle and are always good for a surprise. What „Necrotic Apocalypse“ was on the last album, „Sommerfödd“ is on the new album. An absolutely special song, which I find ingenious, because it is just different. This also applies to the lyrical content, which deals with the love-hate relationship with the Swedish weather. I like it when a band implements unusual ideas. VITTRA also like to flirt with elements of black metal, which is clearly expressed in this song. Contrasting the song is decorated with fine dainty female vocals and other cool ideas. Everything has been excellently interwoven, so that this specialty has also become a real highlight.

The werewolf in the song „Lykantropi“ also marches off at a similar pace, funnily enough exuding a certain cheerfulness through the quite joyful leads. The solo even sounds very light-hearted. Therefore singer David growls and bites his way through the song and fits the role of the werewolf very well.

Conclusion

VITTRA have even surpassed their great debut. „Blasphemy Blues“ is bursting with lively energy that carries the listener along. The stimulating songs full of ideas seem homogeneous without being monotonous and inspire with a great dynamic. In the basically very hard sound unfolds a loose buoyant nature, which is accompanied by a demonic craziness. Thus VITTRA preserve their originality.

Erst bunt, dann düster

MH: Hallo David und Johan. Im Frühjahr letzten Jahres habt ihr mit VITTRA (Facebook) die Debüt-EP „Wardens“ (Review) veröffentlicht, die großes Aufsehen erregte. In einem Interview (Link) habt ihr damals verraten, dass euer Bandname auf einer Romanfigur basiert, die die schwedische Autorin Astrid Lindgren in „Ronja Räubertochter“, geschaffen hat. Außerdem habt ihr euch von mythischen Kreaturen aus schwedischen Volksmärchen inspirieren lassen.
Euer Cover-Artwork von „Wardens“ ist ziemlich bunt und könnte auch ein Kinderzimmer schmücken. Das würde ich mit dem neuen Cover-Artwork von „Blasphemy Blues“ nicht mehr empfehlen. Jetzt ist es sehr dunkel und gruselig.

Was hat es mit dieser geheimnisvollen dunklen Hexenkreatur auf sich? Gibt es ein Märchen oder eine Legende darüber?

David: Für mich persönlich war es sehr schwer, einen roten Faden während der gesamten Entstehung des Albums zu behalten, und als wir dann versuchten, alles zusammenzufügen, dachte ich an einen Engel namens Cherub. Das sind hybride Engel mit verschiedenen Kreaturen, die zu einer Einheit verschmolzen sind, und so ist auch unsere Musik, metaphorisch gesprochen. Ein Song handelt von einem Werwolf, einer von der Waldnymphe, Banshee oder wie auch immer sie heißen mag. Auf Schwedisch heißt das „Skogsrå“. Und natürlich taucht Zombie Jesus wieder auf, daher der Blickwinkel.

Eine Frage des Blickwinkels

MH: Auch Songtitel wie „Lykantropi“ deuten darauf hin, dass es in den Liedern um Mythologie und Fabelwesen gehen könnte?

David: Wenn man es von Anfang bis Ende liest, weiß man sofort, dass es um einen Werwolf geht, aber wenn man stattdessen innehält und einen Moment nachdenkt. Wer ist der Mörder in dieser Geschichte? Ist es der Werwolf, derjenige, der ihn jagt, oder könnte es derjenige sein, der sie gerade liest? Was rechtfertigt das Töten?

Ein kurzer Rückblick

MH: Wie passt der Albumtitel „Blasphemy Blues“ dazu?

David: Tut er eigentlich nicht, oder? Aber er rollt so gut auf unserer Zunge.

Johan: Genau wie beim Cover wollten wir einen Titel, der die Songs irgendwie zusammenfasst, wir haben mit allem möglichen herumgespielt, von Morbid Tales bis Bedtime Stories, bis wir schließlich bei Blasphemy Blues gelandet sind.

MH: Nenne uns doch mal einen großen Bluesmusiker, der dir spontan einfällt.

David: Ich würde sagen, Lars Elofsson! Er ist wahrscheinlich einer der größten Bluesmusiker, die ich je getroffen habe.

MH: Haha… der eigene Live-Gitarrist von VITTRA! Sehr lustig.

Kommen wir kurz zurück zu eurer Debüt-EP „Wardens“. Euer Erfolg war natürlich auf die insgesamt großartigen Songs auf der EP zurückzuführen. Aber vor allem die Single „Necrotic Apocalypse“ war sehr erfolgreich und wurde ein echter Hit bei den Fans. Inwieweit konntet ihr seither auch live auftreten? Hat sich dort bestätigt, dass „Necrotic Apocalypse“ der beliebteste Song ist?

David: Auftritte leider nicht genug! Natürlich bin ich insgesamt mit den bisherigen Ergebnissen zufrieden, aber es gibt immer das Verlangen nach mehr.

Johan: Es ist definitiv ein Song, der live sehr gut ankommt! Also ja, es ist der direkteste und wir spielen ihn eher gegen Ende der Shows.

MH: Wie sehr hat euch dieser Erfolg des Songs überrascht?

Johan: Es ist so schwer vorherzusagen, man mag vielleicht einen Song in seinem Kopf, aber er funktioniert nicht im Studio, man mag ihn im Studio, aber er funktioniert nicht live und so weiter. Aber wir mögen es und sind froh, dass andere es auch zu tun scheinen.

Zwischen Dream Theater und Megadeth

MH: Nun kann eine so originelle Idee nicht noch einmal verwendet werden. Aber auf dem neuen Album ist der Song „Sommarfödd“, der mir gleich beim ersten Durchhören aufgefallen ist. Für mich ein wirklich genialer Song, der wieder einmal mit einer wunderbaren Kombination von ungewöhnlichen Ideen begeistert. Für mich spielt er in der gleichen Liga wie „Necrotic Apocalypse“, auch wenn er völlig anders klingt.

Was hat dich zu diesem Song inspiriert? Worum geht es in dem Song?

Johan: Danke! Die Musik ist eigentlich schon ziemlich alt. Ich habe die Hauptteile schon vor langer Zeit geschrieben. Ich würde sagen, es ist eine Mischung aus Dream Theater und Megadeth. Als wir ihn dann in Vittra aufnahmen, passten wir die Strophe an, um ein paar Black-Metal-Elemente hineinzubekommen, und da David Angst hatte, dass das Intro/Hauptriff ein bisschen zu sehr nach „Walk“ klingen würde, was er nicht mag, hatten wir die Idee, eine Art Gesangslinie mit einer anderen Stimme hinzuzufügen. Wir sind aber bei der Melodie hängen geblieben, und dann hat David mit seiner Mutter gesprochen, die die Grundlage dafür geschaffen hat. Den „uhm-a“-Teil habe ich David gebeten, im Studio hinzuzufügen. Ich glaube, er war ziemlich skeptisch (wie bei Necrotic), aber am Ende ist es gut geworden!

David: In Sommarfödd geht es um meine Hassliebe zum schwedischen Wetter. Die meiste Zeit des Jahres ist es einfach nur dunkel, nass und kalt. Etwas weiter nördlich gibt es Schnee, der ein paar Monate lang liegen bleibt. Der ganze Song handelt also von der Sehnsucht nach dem Frühling, und wenn er dann endlich kommt, lebt man das Leben in vollen Zügen, so dass man sich an kaum etwas erinnert, was man getan hat, und dann ist wieder Winter. Dunkel, nass, kalt und manchmal Schnee.

Mehr Thrash

MH: Auf der EP „Wardens“ hatten die Songs bis auf „Necrotic Apocalypse“ teilweise eine vertracktere Struktur. Auf dem neuen Album sind die neuen Songs homogener und damit eingängiger und dynamischer geworden, mehr nach dem Vorbild von „Necrotic Apocalypse“. Hatte dieser Song einen Einfluss auf das Songwriting?

Johan: Es gibt definitiv eine gewisse Entwicklung, aber ich bin mir nicht ganz sicher, wie es dazu kam. Meine Idee ist es, Songs zu schreiben, bei denen es einen natürlichen, aber nicht zu offensichtlichen Fluss gibt. Wir haben uns auch als Musiker seit der EP, die 2019 aufgenommen wurde, weiterentwickelt. Also ist das auch ein Grund dafür.

MH: Ich würde also sagen, dass der Thrash-Einfluss größer geworden ist. Ich würde es Melodic-Death-Thrash-Metal nennen, wenn man unbedingt nach einer Kategorisierung oder Klassifizierung sucht. Würdest du das bestätigen?

Johan: Vollkommen einverstanden! Melodic Death/Thrash mit einem leichten Hauch von Black.

Spaß an neuen Dingen

MH: Die Songs haben insgesamt, besonders in den Soli, eine sehr rockige Note. Die Gitarrenarbeit, die schon auf „Wardens“ gut war, hat meiner Meinung nach einen weiteren Schritt nach vorne gemacht, und die genialen Soli müssen auch hervorgehoben werden.
Würdet ihr sagen, dass ihr euren Sound gefunden habt? Oder seid ihr gar nicht auf der Suche danach, sondern lasst eurer Kreativität einfach freien Lauf?

David: Der Sound fängt wirklich an, Form anzunehmen, er ist eher fließend und manchmal fest. Wir machen die Dinge so, wie wir sie wollen, und es muss immer Spaß machen. Es macht Spaß, neue Dinge auszuprobieren.

Johan: Ich denke, wir lassen hauptsächlich unserer Kreativität freien Lauf. Der Sound ist wirklich eine Kombination aus unseren individuellen Spielstilen. Wenn es um die Soli geht, muss ich unbedingt Lars als unseren Studio/Live-Session-Gitarristen erwähnen. Er ist wirklich brillant, sowohl beim Schreiben als auch beim Spielen von Soli! Sein Beitrag treibt mich an, mich ebenfalls weiterzuentwickeln.

So soll es sein!

MH: Der Song „Satmara“ beginnt mit einem lebhaften akustischen Gitarrensolo. Hatte der Song seinen Ursprung darin?

Johan: Ja, es begann alles mit der Melodielinie und den Harmonien, als ich auf meiner Akustikgitarre herumspielte. Dann fügte ich die Akkorde hinzu und es wuchs von da an. Das Intro war eigentlich nur als Teaser für die sozialen Medien gedacht, aber dann fügte Lawrence, der den Mix gemacht hat, es dem zweiten oder dritten Mix hinzu, den wir bekamen, und sagte: „So sollte es sein“, und er hatte Recht!

MH: Wie viele Singles wird es bis zur Veröffentlichung geben? Können wir uns schon etwas im Kalender markieren?

Johan: Ich denke, dass wir bei Veröffentlichung dieses Interviews schon bei der dritten Single sein könnten. Das komplette Album werden wir Euch am 11. November präsentieren.

English version

First colorful, now gloomy

MH: Hello David and Johan of VITTRA (Facebook). In spring last year your debut EP „Wardens“ (Review) was released, which immediately caused a great stir. In an interview (link) back then, you revealed that your band name is based on a character created by Swedish author Astrid Lindgren in „Ronja the Robber’s Daughter“. You were also inspired by mythical creatures from Swedish folk tales.

Your cover artwork of „Wardens“ was quite colorful and could also hang a children’s room. Since I would not recommend more with that cover artwork of the new album „Blasphemy Blues“. Now it is very dark and creepy. 

What is this mysterious dark witchy creature all about? Is there a fairy tale or a legend about it?

Eine Frage des Blickwinkels

David: For me personally it was very hard to keep a red thread throughout the whole creation of the album, so when we got to part of trying to stich everything together I thought of an angel called Cherub. They are hybrid angels with different creatures mashed together as one and so is our music, speaking metaphorically.

MH: Also song titles like „Lykantropi“ suggest that the songs could be about mythology and mythical creatures?

David: If you read it from start to finish you will instantly know it’s about a werewolf, but if you instead stop and think for a moment. Who’s the killer in this story? Is it the werewolf, the one hunting it or could it be the one reading it at this moment? what justifies killing?

Another song is about the wood-nymph, banshee whatever the name is. In Swedish it’s “Skogsrå”. And of course Zombie Jesus reappears hence the angle.

A brief retrospective

MH: How does the album title „Blasphemy Blues“ fit in?

David: It really doesn’t, does it? But it rolls so good on top of our tongue.

Johan: Same as with the cover we wanted a title that sort of summarizes the songs, we were playing around with everything from Morbid Tales to Bedtime Stories, until we ended up with Blasphemy Blues.

MH: Name a great blues musician off the top of your head.

David: I’d say Lars Elofsson, he’s probably one of the greatest blues musicians I’ve ever met.

MH: Haha… VITTRA’s own live guitarist! Very funny. Let’s briefly come back to your debut EP „Wardens“. Your success was of course due to the overall great songs on the EP. But first of all the single „Necrotic Apocalypse“ was very successful and became a real hit with the fans. To what extent have you been able to perform live since then? Was it confirmed there that „Necrotic Apocalypse“ is the most popular song?

David: Not enough sadly, of course I’m happy with the results so far but there’s always that aspiration for more.

Johan: It’s definitely a song that goes down really well live! So yes, it’s the most direct and we tend to play it towards the end of the shows.

MH: How much did this success of the song surprise you?

Johan: It’s so hard to predict, you might like a song in your head but it doesn’t work in the studio, you might like it in the studio but it doesn’t work live and so on. But we like it and are happy that others seem to do it as well.

Between Dream Theater and Megadeth

MH: Now such an original idea can’t be used again. But on the new album is the song „Sommarfödd“, which caught my attention immediately on the first listen through. For me, a really ingenious song that once again inspires with a wonderful combination of unusual ideas. For me it plays in the same league as „Necrotic Apocalypse“, even if it sounds completely different.

What inspired you to write this song? What is the song about?

Johan: Thanks! The music is quite old actually, I wrote the main parts a long time ago. I would say it’s a mixture of Dream Theater meets Megadeth. Then when we picked it up in Vittra we adjusted the verse to get a bit of the black metal elements in there, and then since David was afraid that the intro/main riff was going to be a bit too much of “Walk”, that he doesn’t like, we had the idea of adding some sort of vocal line to it with a different voice. We got stuck on the melody though and then David talked to his mother who was the one that came up with the foundation. The “uhm-a”-part is something I asked David to add in the studio. I think he was quite skeptical (as with Necrotic) but it turned out good in the end!

David: Sommarfödd is about my love/hate relationship towards Swedish weather. Most of the year it’s just dark, wet and cold a bit further north you’ll get some snow that lasts for a couple of months. So the whole song’s about a yearning for spring and when it finally comes you live life the fullest so you barely remember a single thing you did and then it’s winter again. Dark, wet, cold and sometimes snow.

More thrash

MH:  On the EP „Wardens“ the songs partly had a more intricate structure, except „Necrotic Apocalypse“. On the new album, the new songs have become more homogeneous and thus catchier and more dynamic, more along the lines of „Necrotic Apocalypse“. Did this song have an impact on the songwriting of the new songs?

Johan: There is definitely some development but not fully sure how it happened. My thinking is to create songs where there is a natural flow, though not too obvious. We have also developed as musicians since the EP that was actually recorded in 2019 so that’s part of the explanation as well.

MH: So I would say that the thrash influence has become bigger. I would call it Melodic-Death-Thrash-Metal, if you are necessarily looking for a categorization or classification. Would you confirm that?

Johan: Fully agree! Melodic Death/Thrash with a slight touch of Black.

Fun in new things

MH: The songs overall, especially in the solos, a very rocky note. The guitar work, which was already good on „Wardens“, has taken another step forward in my opinion, and the brilliant solos must also be emphasized.

Would you say that you have found your sound? Or are you not searching for it at all, but just letting your creativity run free?

David: The sound is really starting to take shape, it’s more like a fluid thing and sometimes solid. We do things our way the way we want it and it always has to be fun. It’s fun trying out new things.

Johan: I think we are mainly letting our creativity run free. The sound is really the combination of our individual playing styles. When it comes to the solos I really need to mention the addition of Lars as our Studio/Live session guitarist. He’s really brilliant, both at writing and playing solos! Having him contributing pushes me to develop as well.

This is how it should be

MH: The song „Satmara“ begins with a lively acoustic guitar solo. Did the song have its origin in this?

Johan: Yes, it all started with the melody line/harmonies when I was playing around on my acoustic guitar. Then I added the chords and it grew from there. The intro was actually intended only as a teaser for social media but then Lawrence who did the mixing added it to the second or third mix that we got and said “This is how it should be” and he was right!

MH: How many singles will there be until the release? May we already mark something in the calendar?

Johan: Think we might be up for single number three now (28 October) and then we go for the full album 11 November.

Ich weiß natürlich nicht, wer von Euch werten Metal-Fans noch die schwedische Autorin Astrid Lindgren (Wikipedia ) kennt, die uns mit vielen hervorragenden (Kinder-)büchern die Kindheit (z.B. „Pippi Langstrumpf“ oder „Ronja, die Räubertochter“) versüßt hat. Es dürfte eigentlich niemanden, der nicht eines ihrer Bücher gelesen oder eine Verfilmung dieser Bücher gesehen hat. Was hat das nun mit knallhartem Death-Metal von VITTRA (Facebook ) zu tun? Dann lest mal fleißig, denn Johan (Gitarre) und David (Gesang) haben sich den Fragen von `metal-heads.de´ gestellt.

Die EP „Wardens“

MH: Hallo zusammen! Die Veröffentlichung eurer Debüt-EP „Wardens“ ist frisch erschienen. Eure erste Single „Necrotic Apocalypse“ hat innerhalb von vier Wochen fast 16.000 Views. Meiner Meinung nach ist das sehr bemerkenswert für die erste Single einer neuen Band. Habt Ihr das so erwartet?

Johan (Gitarrist): Ich schätze, wir haben es einfach gehofft. Denn wir waren sowohl mit dem Song selbst als auch mit dem Video ziemlich zufrieden und wir haben bemerkt, dass der erste Teaser, der veröffentlicht wurde, die Aufmerksamkeit der Leute zu erregen schien!

MH: Wie ist die allgemeine Resonanz auf die veröffentlichten Singles und die EP bis jetzt?

Johan: Wirklich gut! Wir haben viele tolle Kritiken und nur eine wirklich schlechte bis jetzt… „Necrotic Apocalypse“ scheint der Song zu sein, der am direktesten ankommt, aber wir hoffen, dass die Leuten auch Zugang und Gefallen an den anderen Songs finden.

VITTRA und Astrid Lindgren

MH: Euer Bandname VITTRA hat eine ungewöhnliche Herkunft, besonders für eine Melodic-Death-Metal-Band. Erzählt uns etwas über diese interessante Tatsache!

Johan: Es begann eigentlich als „Vildvittra“, basierend auf den von Astrid Lindgren geschaffenen Charakteren als Teil von „Ronja Rövardotter“ (Ronja, die Räubertochter). Später entwickelte sich der Name zu VITTRA, inspiriert von einigen Fabelwesen, die in schwedischen Volksmärchen vorkommen. Manche Leute bringen es mit dem gleichnamigen Album von Naglfar in Verbindung, aber wir kannten unsere Metal-Geschichte nicht gut genug, um uns davon beeinflussen zu lassen.

Bellender Hund

MH: Ungewöhnlich in einem anderen Sinne ist die erste Single „Necrotic Apocalypse“, vor allem wegen des verrückten Gesangsparts mit „Rommmtommmtommm“. Wer kam auf diese Idee und was sollte dieser Part ausdrücken?

David (Sänger): Es war alles Johans Idee, und ich war zuerst nicht überzeugt, aber als alles an seinem Platz war, gab es dem Ganzen eine zusätzliche Würze.

Johan: Ich hatte das Gefühl, dass dieser Teil des Songs etwas mehr brauchte und ich hatte eine Idee, die auf dem Song „Demonic Refusal“ von Testament basiert, wo es ein bisschen so klingt, als würde Chuck Billy hinter einem der ersten Riffs „grunzen“. Somit fing also wirklich als eine Art „Grunzen aus dem Untergrund“ an und ich glaube, David hat dann eine Interpretation in Richtung des Geräusches von laufenden Stiefeln gemacht.

Es ist ziemlich cool geworden, also haben wir es ein bisschen mehr in den Mix eingebaut als ursprünglich beabsichtigt. Außerdem ist es auch ziemlich lustig, dass einige Leute (hauptsächlich in Südamerika) zu denken scheinen, dass es sich wie ein bellender Hund anhört (Anm. d. Verf.: Das dachte ich übrigens auch…Haha). Trotzdem scheint es ein Teil zu sein, der anspricht und es macht Spaß, dass die Leute ihre eigenen Interpretationen machen.

MH: Okay David, Du warst also anfangs nicht überzeugt. Und wie siehst Du es jetzt?

David: Es ist einer der besten Songs, die wir bisher veröffentlicht haben.

Jesus, Apocalypse und Zombies

MH: David, wie hat er sich in der Rolle des Zombies im Video gefühlt?

David: Ich hatte das Gefühl, dass ich ich selbst sein konnte. Sehr bequem!

MH: In dem Lied gibt es Anspielungen auf Jesus und die Auferstehung. Allerdings wird hier der Untergang der Welt offenbart. Gibt es eine bestimmte Botschaft, die der Song vermitteln soll?

David: Ja, es gibt in der Tat eine Botschaft! Wir als Menschheit müssen aufhören, zu viel zu konsumieren, denn das hungrige Ende kommt bald und wenn es nichts mehr zu essen gibt, werden wir uns einfach gegenseitig essen müssen.

Dynamik mit WOW Effekt

MH: Das sehr rockige Gitarrensolo im Anschluss hätte man auch nicht erwartet. Auch der Song „Modest Charade“ überrascht nach dem ersten Song mit mehr Eingängigkeit und mit einem folkloristisch ruhigen Instrumentalteil. Ist das Element der Überraschung ein Markenzeichen von VITTRA? Sollten ab und zu ungewöhnliche Elemente integriert werden?

Johan: Ich denke, dass es einen Ansatz gibt, dass es immer eine Art von Dynamik in den Songs geben sollte. Aber mit den positiven Reaktionen auf „Necrotic Apocalypse“ denke ich, dass wir definitiv davon profitieren können, mehr Dinge zu haben, die als „unerwartet“ angesehen werden. Beim Solo in „Necrotic Apocalypse“ hat es sich einfach richtig angefühlt, dieser Teil des Songs ist ganz schön „poppig“.

Energetische Beziehungen

MH: Ihr seid noch eine relativ junge Band. Die Geschichte begann 2017 und ein Jahr später war das Line-Up komplett. Nun kennt ihr euch schon einige Jahre. Wie viel Zeit verbringt ihr zusammen?

Johan: Wir treffen uns ca. einmal pro Woche, um zu proben und Musik zu schreiben. Dann chatten wir mehr oder weniger jeden Tag, sei es über Neuigkeiten und Feedback zu „Wardens“ oder einfach nur, um uns gegenseitig von coolen neuen (oder alten) Veröffentlichungen und Bands zu erzählen. Oder um Bassistenwitze zu reißen…

MH: Ist die Band irgendwann wie eine zweite Familie?

Johan: Es ist eine Möglichkeit, andere Dinge zu tun, als ein Metallarbeiter zu sein, Eltern zu sein, an einem Büroschreibtisch zu sitzen, zu studieren oder was auch immer wir normalerweise tun. Ich weiß, dass David von Zeit zu Zeit gesagt hat, dass dies seine gesündeste und energetischste Beziehung ist.

Sag mir, wer du bist!

MH: Wie würdet Ihr Euch in kurzen Worten gegenseitig beschreiben?

David: Johan ist der große Papa, auch der Papa in der Band. Gustav ist der Teddybär und Bassgott. Und Alex: „We can’t add more cowbell!“ ( Das kann man nicht sinnvoll übersetzen. Der Ausdruck spielt wohl auf einen bestimmten Sketch an, den Ihr hier sehen könnt. Viel Spaß damit!)

Johan: Und wie würdest Dich selbst beschreiben, David?

David: Dave der Kämpfer!

Johan: Weil dir eine gewisse Art Zurückhaltung fehlt…

David: Ich bin nur sehr ehrlich!

Vorspeise und Hauptgang

MH: Vier starke und großartige Songs sind auf „VITTRA“ vertreten. Jetzt werden sich die Fans nach dieser leckeren Vorspeise fragen, wann die Hauptmahlzeit serviert wird. Gibt es schon neue Songs, die geschrieben wurden?

Johan: Wir haben zwei Songs, die als Demo fertig sind. Drei weitere sind in Arbeit und Ideen für einen weiteren Haufen. Also eine gute Grundlage.

MH: Wollt ihr den Stil von „Wardens“ weiterführen oder werden andere Gesichter von „VITTRA“ zum Vorschein kommen?

Johan: Für mich ist „Wardens“ ziemlich vielfältig und ich denke, ich wage es, für uns alle zu sprechen, wenn ich sage, dass das der Weg ist, den wir weitergehen wollen. Wenn man sich die neuen Songs anschaut, haben sie die gleichen Zutaten von Melodien, Black-, Thrash- und Death-Metal.

MH: Was sind Eure Pläne angesichts der Pandemiekrise?

Johan: Da im Moment nicht viel in der Live-Szene passiert, konzentrieren wir uns darauf, ein Album fertig zu stellen. Der Plan ist, es im Laufe des nächsten Jahres herauszubringen.

MH: Die letzten Worte, die Du loswerden möchtest?

David: Sei du selbst, so ist das Leben einfacher!

Of course I don’t know who of you Metal fans still know the Swedish author Astrid Lindgren (Wikipedia ), who sweetened our childhood with many excellent (children’s) books (e.g. „Pippi Longstocking“ or „Ronja, the Robber’s Daughter“). There is certainly no one who has not read one of her books or seen a film version of these books. What does this have to do with the hard-hitting death metal of VITTRA(Facebook )? Then read diligently….

EP „Wardens“

MH: The release of your debut EP „Wardens“ is fresh released. Your first single „Necrotic Apocalypse“ within four weeks has almost 16,000 views. In my opinion that’s very remarkable for the first single of a new band. Did you expect that?

Johan: I guess we were hoping, we are quite happy with both the song itself and the video. We noticed that the initial teaser put out seemed to grab people’s attention!

MH: How is the overall response to the released singles and EP so far?

Johan: Really good! We have a lot of great reviews and only one really bad so far… Necrotic seems to be the song that is most direct but we are hoping for the others to grow on people as well.

VITTRA and Astrid Lindgren

MH: Your band name „Vittra“ has an unusual origin, especially for a Melodic-Death-Metal-Band. Tell us something about this interesting fact!

Johan: It actually started as “Vildvittra”, based on the characters created by Astrid Lindgren as part of “Ronja Rövardotter” (Ronia, The Robber’s Daughter). It later evolved into Vittra, inspired by some mythical creatures appearing in Swedish folk tales. Some people relate it to the album by Naglfar with the same name but we actually didn’t know our Metal history well enough to be influenced by that one.

MH: Unusual in another sense is the first single „Necrotic Apocalypse“, especially because of the crazy vocal part with „Rommmtommmtommm“. Who came up with this idea and what should this part express?

David: It was all Johans idea and I wasn’t convinced at first but once it was all in place it added some extra flavor to it.

Johan: I felt that that part of the song needed something more and I had an idea based on the song „Demonic Refusal“ by TESTAMENT where it sounds a bit like Chuck Billy is “grunting” behind one of the first riffs. So it really started as some sort of “grunting from the underground” and then I think David made an interpretation towards the sound of boots walking.  It turned out pretty cool so we put it up in the mix a bit more than originally intended. It’s also quite fun that some people (mainly in South America) seem to think that it sounds like a dog barking. Regardless it seems to be a part that engages and it’s fun that people make their own interpretations.

MH: Okay David, so you weren’t convinced at first. And how do you see it now?

David: It’s one of the best songs we have released so far.

Jesus, apocalypse and zombies

MH: How did he feel in the role of a zombie in the video?

David: I felt as if I could be myself, very comfi.

MH: In the song there are allusions to Jesus and the resurrection. However, the downfall of the world is revealed here. Is there a particular message that the song is supposed to convey?

David: Yeah there’s a message alright! We as humankind have to stop overconsuming because the hungry end is coming soon and if there’s nothing left to eat we will simply have to eat each other.

Dynamics with WOW effect

MH: The very rocky guitar solo in the connection one would not have expected also. Also the song „Modest Charade“ surprises after the first song with more catchiness and with a folkloristic calm instrumental part. Is the element of surprise a trademark of VITTRA? Should unusual elements be integrated every now and then?

Johan: I think that there is an approach that there should always be some sort of dynamic to the songs. However with the positive reactions to „Necrotic Apocalypse“ I think we can definitely benefit from having more things that are seen as “unexpected”. When it comes to the solo in „Necrotic Apocalypse“ it just felt right, that part of the song is all quite “pop”.

Energetic relationships

MH: VITTRA is still a relatively young band. The story started in 2017 and one year later the line up was complete. Now you know each other for several years. How much time do you spend together?

Johan: We meet approx. once per week to rehearse and write music. Then we chat more or less every day, might be around news and feedback on Wardens or just telling each other about cool new (or old) releases and bands. Or pulling bassist jokes…

MH: Is the band like a second family at some point?

Johan: It’s a way to do other things than being a sheet metal worker, parent, sitting at an office desk, studying or whatever we normally do. I know that David has said from time to time this is his most healthy and energizing relation.

Tell me who you are!

MH: Please formulate in a short way how you would characterize each other?

David: Johan is the big papa, also big papa in the band. Gustav: Teddybear and bassgod. Alex: We can’t add more cowbell.

Johan: And how would you describe yourself, David?

David: Dave the brave!

Johan: Because you are missing some sort of filter…?

David: Just being very honest!

Appetizer and main course

MH: Four strong and great songs are represented on „VITTRA“. Now the fans will ask themselves after this delicious appetizer, when the main meal will be served. Are there already new songs that have been written?

Johan: We have two songs that are demoed and done. Three more in the works and ideas for another bunch. So a good foundation.

MH: Do you want to continue the still of „Wardens“ or will other faces of „VITTRA“ be revealed?

Johan: To me Wardens is quite diverse and I think I dare to speak for all of us saying that it’s the way we want to continue. Looking at the new songs they have the same ingredients of melodies, black, thrash and death metal.

MH:What are your plans in light of the pandemic crisis?

Johan: Since not much is happening on the live scene right now we are focusing on getting an album done. Plan is to have it out during next year.

MH: Last words you want to get rid of?

David: Be yourself, life will be easier that way.

MH: The best way to support the band is to buy the album at Bandcamp and play the songs up and down at the relevant streaming portals.

zelebriert die schwedische Band VITTRA (Facebook ). Ein Subgenre des Metal, dass über zahlreiche und hochwertige Mitstreiter verfügt. Und doch schaffen es manche Bands immer wieder mich zu überraschen und Neugierde zu wecken. VITTRA gehören auf jeden Fall dazu. Warum? Tja… Das hat mit der ersten Single

„Necrotic Apocalypse“

und dem dazugehörigen Video zu tun. Der Beginn verspricht schon mal ein hohes handwerkliches Niveau. Außergewöhnliches hört man zunächst aber nicht. Der Song stampft flott voran. Markantes variables Riffing, wuchtiger Bass und treibende Drums. Dazu gesellen sich die gutturalen Vocals. So weit, so gut. Da fängt der Kopf schon mal zu nicken an. Aber dann kommt es irgendwann…

Plötzlich bellt der Sänger David Döragrip stakkatoartig „Rommtommtommm“ ins Mikro und hat mich mit dieser irren abstrusen Einlage bei den Eiern. Total bekloppt, aber das ist ja das geile. Und als wenn das noch nicht genug wäre, schließt sich ein sehr rockiges fetziges Gitarrensolo an, mit dem man bei dem aggressiv dunklen Death-Sound auch nicht gerechnet hätte. Eine irre geile Nummer!

VITTRA variieren gerne,

so dass man sich nie zu sicher sein darf, was den Verlauf der Songs angeht. David Döragrip schaltet als Sänger zwischen martialischen Growls und angriffslustigen Screams hin und her. Er knurrt, bellt und beißt dann auch gerne mal zu. Nur cleanen Gesang sucht man auf der EP vergebens.

VITTRA prügeln sich auf hohem technischen Niveau durch die Songs. Hervorzuheben sind die einfallsreichen Leads und Riffs, welche zum Teil sehr ungewöhnlich klingen, wie z.B. beim Song „Cloudbreaker“. Aber wie auch immer sie erklingen, sind sie dank Johan Murmester  kunstvoll gespielt. Die haut man nicht mal eben so raus. Dazu gesellen sich Tempi- und Rhythmuswechsel, die keine Monotonie aufkommen lassen. Es gibt auch mal krasse Breaks. Dabei fällt der Song „Modest Charade“ auf. Ein sehr melodischer und wohl der eingängigste Song auf der EP, bei dem man gerade im Kopfschüttelmodus ist, als dann plötzlich ein liebliches akustisches Gitarrenspiel folkloristisches Feeling versprüht.

Fazit

VITTRA haben es voll drauf und schaffen es tatsächlich ihrem Sound das gewisse Etwas zu verpassen, um sich von der Masse abzuheben. So muss das laufen! Mit ihrer Debüt-EP „Wardens“ erzeugen sie durch ihren melodischen Death-Metal Spannung und Vorfreude auf das, was da noch kommen mag. Das macht Lust auf mehr! Von mir aus könnte der Verrücktheitsgrad wie bei dem Song „Necrotic Apocalypse“ ruhig stellenweise noch ein wenig höher geschraubt werden. VITTRA haben jedenfalls mit einem mächtigen „Rommtommmtommm“ bei mir Eindruck hinterlassen!

Melodic-Death-Metal

celebrates the Swedish band VITTRA (Facebook ). A subgenre of metal that has numerous and high-quality comrades-in-arms. And yet some bands succeed again and again to surprise me and arouse curiosity. VITTRA are definitely one of them. Why? Well… It started with the first single.

„Necrotic Apocalypse“

and the accompanying video. The beginning promises a high level of craftsmanship. But at first you don’t hear anything extraordinary. The song stomps briskly forward. Distinctive variable riffing, powerful bass and driving drums. In addition, there are the guttural vocals. So far, so good! My head is shaking. But then it comes at some point…

Suddenly the singer David Döragrip barks staccato „Rommtommtommm“ into the microphone and has me by the balls with this crazy abstruse interlude. Totally crazy, but that’s the cool thing! And if that wasn’t enough, a very rocking wild guitar solo follows, which you wouldn’t have expected from the aggressively dark Death sound. A crazy cool track!

VITTRA like to vary,

so that you can never be too sure about the course of the songs. David Döragrip switches back and forth between martial growls and aggressive screams. He growls, barks and also bites. Only clean vocals are in vain on the EP. I don’t miss it here.

VITTRA thrash their way through the songs on a high technical level. The imaginative leads and riffs are to be emphasized, which partly sound very unusual, as for example in the song „Cloudbreaker“. But however they sound, they are played artfully by Johan Murmester. You don’t just knock them out like that. VITTRA walk between melodic leads and massive riffing. In addition, there are tempo and rhythm changes that do not allow monotony to arise. There are also sometimes blatant breaks. Thereby the song „Modest Charade“ stands out. A very melodic and probably the catchiest song on the EP, where you are just in head-shaking mode, when suddenly a lovely acoustic guitar playing sprays folkloric feeling.

Result

VITTRA have it all and actually succeed in giving their sound that certain something to stand out from the crowd. That’s how it has to be! With their debut EP „Wardens“ they create tension and anticipation for what may come. This makes you want more! For my part, the degree of craziness as in the song „Necrotic Apocalypse“ could be screwed a little higher in places. VITTRA have in any case with a powerful „Rommtommmtommm“ left an impression on me!
