Hallo zusammen, zu einem weiteren Beitrag mit einer Bandverkündung zur 2026er-Auflage des RAGE AGAINST RACISM. Wir von metal-heads.de haben euch schon einige der auftretenden Acts vorgestellt und heute geht es munter weiter. Wir wollen euch die Info übermitteln, wer am Festivalfreitag am späten Nachmittag die Bühne neben der Mühle in Friemersheim besteigen wird, um den Zuschauern – noch recht zu Beginn des Events – seine Musik zu servieren.

In dem auch im kommenden Jahr wieder bunten Stilmix schadet es bestimmt nicht, wenn noch etwas Metal dazukommt. Dunkel und der Doom-Ecke zugeneigt ist die Musik der britischen Formation einzuordnen. Die Ü-50-Metalfans kennen sicher noch Sänger und Gitarrist Tim Preston aus seiner aktiven Zeit bei DEARLY BEHEADED. Diese frühere englische Band war unlängst wieder in den Fokus gerückt, da ihr früherer Drummer jetzt hinter dem Schlagzeug bei IRON MAIDEN Platz genommen hat.

RAGE AGAINST RACISM 2026 – mehr britischer Metal!

Spätestens jetzt wisst ihr, von wem die Rede ist: DAMNATION’S HAMMER. Die RAGE AGAINST RACISM-Besucher in Duisburg können sich glücklich schätzen, dass diese Band einen Auftritt beim Festival im kommenden Juni zugesagt hat. Das sollte ein feiner Gig werden. Damit ihr eine Idee davon bekommt, wie die Musik des Vierers klingt, servieren wir euch einen Höreindruck.

Ein bisschen Geduld braucht ihr, aber schon bald gibt es bei uns den nächsten Beitrag mit der Verkündung einer weiteren Band, die am Wochenende des 05. & 06.06.2026 an der Friemersheimer Mühle beim RAGE AGAINST RACISM eine Live-Performance abliefert.

Auch heute wollen wir euch einmal mehr einen Überblick über neue und zukünftige Musik aus der internationalen Metalszene bieten. Dazu haben wir von metal-heads.de einige Releases ausgewählt, um sie euch vorzustellen. Als erstes erinnern wir an das Live-Release der Kürbis-Metaller von HELLOWEEN. Die am 13.12.2024 erschienene Doppel-Live-CD haben wir euch ausführlich hier näher gebracht. Heute haben wir noch das Video zu „Forever and one“ mit dem Duett der beiden Sänger mit hunderten von Handylichtern im Hintergrund für euch. Bitte sehr:

Kommen wir zu einer weiteren Ikone des Heavy Metal: IRON MAIDEN. Dabei blicken wir insbesondere auf deren Drummer. Nicko McBrain ist seit bemerkenswerten 42 Jahre der Mann hinter der Trommelburg der Briten. Vor ca. 2 Jahren erlitt er einen Schlaganfall, von dem er sich gut erholte, aber angesichts seiner 72 Lebensjahre und vermutlich weiterer persönlicher Gründe, die nicht aufgeführt werden, hat er nach einem letzten Konzert mit IRON MAIDEN am 07.12.2024 beschlossen, das Touren mit der Band an den Nagel zu hängen. Gleichzeitig hat er weitere Ideen und Projekte angekündigt…der humorvolle Drummer wird uns also hoffentlich noch einige Jahre mit diversen Aktivitäten erhalten bleiben.

Neuer Drummer bei IRON MAIDEN – kein Unbekannter…

Seinen Platz auf dem Drumhocker bei den Eisernen Jungfrauen wird Simon Dawson übernehmen. Kennern der britischen Musikszene ist der Schlagzeuger von seiner Zeit mit DEARLY BEHEADED bekannt (das ist schon eine Weile her) und zuletzt bildete er die Rhythmus-Abteilung der Band BRITISH LION, wo er seit über eine, Jahrzehnt bereits eng mit Bassist Steve Harris zusammenarbeitet. Man darf gespannt sein, wie der neue Mann in die riesigen Fußstapfen seines Vorgängers tritt…mögen die Fans ihm eine faire Chance geben. Schon 2025 ist man wieder weiter auf Tour, da können wir uns live davon überzeugen…

Eine coole Idee zum Thema haben wir bei YouTube gefunden…ein Drum-Medley als Hommage an Nicko McBrain mit allen (!!!) IRON MAIDEN-Songs…schaut euch das bis zum Ende an. Eine starke Sache. Echt cool, wie da die Übergänge gestaltet wurden. Da hat sich Jemand echt viel Mühe gemacht.

Kompletter Stilwechsel. Weiter in den europäischen Norden…nach Finnland. Dort bereiten sich die Black Metaller HAVUKRUUNU auf das Release ihres vierten Studioalbums „Tavastland“ am 28.02.2025 vor. Wir stellen euch den Titeltrack des Vierers heute vor. Musik ab:

HELLOWEEN, Nicko McBrain, CALLEJON & mehr

Aus Düsseldorf stammen CALLEJON. Der Fünfer vom Rhein hat bezüglich des Line up einmal gut gemischt und verkündet 3 Neuzugänge. Am Schlagzeug ist Daniel Pampuch mit von der Partie, die beiden Gitarren übernehmen zukünftig Alan Kassab und Denis Milenkovic. Wer die Band in der neuen Zusammenstellung live erleben möchte, der hat schon bald die Gelegenheit dazu. Man spielt erstmals gemeinsam am 01.02.2025 live beim Escalation Fest (mehr dazu unten) in Oberhausen.

Blicken wir nach Frankreich. Dort starteten 2015 in Nancy FRACTAL UNIVERSE ihre Aktivitäten. Die progressiven Death Metaller haben einen neuen Deal unterschrieben und wollen das nächste Studiorelease „The great filters“ am 04.04.2025 unter die Leute bringen. Schon heute gibt es „The seed of singularity“ als Höreindruck vom neuen Material. Gefällt mir, die Nummer! Was meint ihr?

Zum Monatsanfang geht es zur Sache. Am 01.02.2025 steigt im Ruhrgebiet unter dem Namen Escalation Fest ein von ELECTRIC CALLBOY ausgehendes Festival in der Rudolf Weber Arena. In der Oberhausener Multifunktionshalle tritt nicht nur die 6-köpfige Formation aus Castrop-Rauxel als Headliner auf. Mit LANDMVRKS, HBLOCKX und CALLEJON konnte man weitere attraktive Acts buchen. Außerdem werden BAD LOVERZ und AS EVERYTHING UNFOLDS auftreten. Als besonderer Künstler ist auch Mambo Kurt vertreten. Weitere Infos hier

Die amerikanischen Metaller PREDATOR haben jüngst einen Deal bei Fighter Records unterzeichnet. Das ermöglicht der Truppe die Veröffentlichung ihres zweiten Studioalbums namens „Unsafe space“. Ein Dutzend Tracks will man auf den Silberling packen, wir stellen euch heute schon vorab „Saviors“ als Vorgeschmack vor. Bitte sehr:

Zum Abschluss gibt es noch mehr Musik aus den USA. Die kalifornischen Thrasher von MINDWARS wollen am 07.03.2025 ihr neues Album mit dem schlichten Titel „V“ (es ist auch das fünfte Release der Formation) herausbringen. 11 Songs inklusive eines SUPERTRAMP-Covers sollen enthalten sein. We had the chance to hook up with guitarist Tim Preston from the British band DAMNATION`S HAMMER…

Hi there, my name is Amir and I´m working for the German music magazine www.metal-heads.de , which is focussed on – you may have guessed from the name – heavy music. At least we say, it has to include guitars…distortion is our passion.

To tell you the truth, I´ve not heard of the band before! But I met you after many years (knowing you from DEARLY BEHEADED) during a visit in Manchester in early April. We talked about your latest release and it was sent to me. My review is already up on our homepage (it´s in German though). If I was asked, you and your music deserve more attention and so I wanna give you the chance today, to give the people out there chance to learn about your band and music.

MH: let´s start quite in the beginning. I´d be interested to know, how you got you into starting this band? Who´s idea was it and how did it begin and develop?

How it all started…back in 2007

TP: I started the band in 2007 actually. I remember seeing Celtic Frost on their reunion tour and they opened the set with „Procreation Of The Wicked“, however they played it deliberatly slowly and it sounded incredibly heavy and menacing – that’s when I realised, this is the style of music I want to play – doom laden metal, however not like a traditional doom band. I was originally a bassist in my former bands so I spent quite a while searching for a guitarist and a vocalist who would share my dream. I couldn’t find any other musicians to work with, so I had to bite the bullet and switch to guitar and begin to write. It’s the best thing I ever did, I opened something inside of myself and found I was able to create riffs and structure songs. The same with singing, I’d never sung before – I‘m still learning what I can do with my voice, however it’s another creative side that I never knew I had.

MH: how much time do you spend in the band, I mean are you rehearsing on a regular basis etc.?

TP: We rehearse regularly as a three piece, myself on guitar and vocals, Ady is lead guitar and our drummer is Gary – our bassist Jamie lives 2 hours from the rest of us, so he doesn’t join us unless we have a gig to play. When we’re writing new songs, we record any new ideas as a live 3 piece in our rehearsal room and then email them to Jamie, then he does his homework!

MH: what was your intention to start with this kind of music (regarding DAMNATION`S HAMMER)? In how far have you reached your goal or what are the upcoming plans?

TP: My original goal was to record a demo and play a couple of gigs. Our demo was called „Sepent’s Wrath“ and it lead to a deal with Sweden’s I Hate Records, they released our debut album „Disciples of the Hex“ back in 2013. Obviously now we have a deal with Massacre Records and we’re a regular live outfit – this is something I would have never dreamed of a few years ago! Plans for the future are to record the follow up to „Unseen Planets, Deadly Spheres“ – most of the next album is already written by the way. Also to continue to play gigs, we were fortunate enough this year to be invited to perform at Bloodstock Open Air which was a very cool experience. From the back of that gig, we were announced for Incineration Festival in London 2020.

MH: it took you quite a while, to come up with the latest release after the album, you did before. Can you explain why?

The drummer on a little island

TP: As I mentioned previously, I couldn’t find other musicians to work with for a long time. The drummer on „Disciples of the Hex“ was an old friend of mine, who lives on the Isle of Man – which is the small island between England and Ireland – and as you can imagine that was not very convenient, however he was the only drummer I knew who was interested. We never rehearsed, I used to record guitar parts to a click track then email them to him – he’d then add the drums and email his performance back. That is how we built the songs for the first album. Once the album was released, I realised, that I really need to get into a rehearsal room and jam the songs live. It took a long, long time to find a drummer. I’d known Gary for many years, however he was a guitarist by trade – he contacted me to say that he was interested in drumming and would like to give it a go, although he’d never drummed in a band before! I had no other option so we gave it a try, I’m sure Gary would admit he wasn’t too good at first, however he got really good really quickly! He’s a natural. He saved the band in my opinion.

MH: what are your main influences and did they change in the meantime from the last album to the latest one?

TP: Celtic Frost and Voivod have always been an influence for sure. I tend to listen to classic rock and metal, Rush, Sabbath, AC/DC, Motörhead, Maiden although the influence of those bands may not be obvious to the listener. Inspiration can come from almost anywhere really, something as simple as a chord change in a Pink Floyd song will catch my ear and make me want to pick up a guitar. I’m influenced by certain songs such as Metallica’s „The Thing That Should Not Be“, „Harvester Of Sorrow“ and Maiden’s „To Tame A Land“. I recently heard „Rock Drill“ by The Sensational Alex Harvey Band for the first time, now there’s a song that made me sit up and take notice!

Touring plans in the future – DAMNATION`S HAMMER

MH: are there any plans for some touring, maybe even in Germany or the Netherlands? Festival appearances in 2019/2020?

TP: Unfortunately we have no confirmed plans to play in Europe as yet, we would love the opportunity though. To have the chance to play the Eindhoven Metal Fest would be fantastic. We’re currently contacting festivals for the chance to play.

MH: what musicians would you love to share the stage with and/or what band would you like to tour with and why?

TP: Wow, to be honest I’ve never really thought about it. I guess if it could be any band then to tour with, then Iron Maiden would be a dream come true! Realistically though, I’m going to say Down. I think we’d be a good match stylistically.

Playing any stage live, but beware of long hair

MH: festival, club gig or big venue? There are various kinds of gigs to play for a band to play. Small sweaty club gigs, big  venues or even stadiums and then these 3-day-festivals in front of 50.000 to 120.000 people. What kind of performances do you prefer and why?

TP: I prefer to play on a big stage, I like to have room to move around and keep out of the way of our bassist Jamie, as he has waist length hair and when he starts windmilling he gets in my way haha! Seriously though, I don’t mind the size of the stage. I’m very passionate about playing live and give it all I’ve got no matter the stage size.

MH: do you have any experiences in playing charity shows like the RAGE AGAINST RACISM-festival in Duisburg? It´s a great thing, positioning itself against racism and of course the participating bands fully stand behind that attitude! Could you imagine to play an event like that? Just asking, as it´s coming up soon and our magazine ist he official media partner!!

Some charity experience…

TP: Yeah we’d love to play that event for sure. I know the guys in Kill2This, who played this year, they had nothing but positive things to say about the festival. We have done a couple of charity gigs in the past, we played for the Sophie Lancaster Foundation and we performed at Grimm Up North which was the gig organised to help Steve Grimmett from Grim Reaper, who had to have his leg amputated from the knee down.

Da macht man aus einem ganz anderen Anlass eine Reise nach England und trifft nach vielen Jahren in Manchester Tim Preston wieder. Nein, es verwundert nicht, wenn ihr mir sagt, dass euch der Name nichts sagt. Der gute Mann hat damals, als wir uns kennenlernten, den Bass bei der britischen Formation DEARLY BEHEADED bedient. Jetzt haben die Zuständigkeiten gewechselt. Mr. Preston spielt jetzt bei DAMNATION´S HAMMER und hat da die dünnen Saiten übernommen, daneben ist er auch für die Lead Vocals zuständig.

Das Debüt des Quartetts von der Insel ist bereits 2013 erschienen und jetzt (allerdings bereits vor ein paar Wochen im Februar 2019) hat die neueste Langrille das Licht der Welt erblickt. „Unseen planets, deadly spheres“ ist der Titel des zehn Tracks umfassenden neuen Albums. Stilistisch kreuzen sich bei den Briten Thrash und Death Metal in einer – wie ich finde – gelungenen Mischung. Dazu fließen düstere Doom-Elemente ein und so kann man von einem interessanten Schmelztiegel reden. Von hinten treibt Drummer Gary Bevan, den Tieftöner hat James Fowler fest im Griff und die 1. Gitarre spielt Ady Farnell.

Nach 6 Jahren folgt Album Nummer 2

Der Vierer hat hier zwei Hand voll Songs am Start, die eine gewisse Eigenständigkeit für sich beanspruchen können. Der Einstieg gleich mit einer knapp nicht penetranten E-Gitarre. Dann geht es wuchtig los. Düster und heavy. Das gefällt. Track 2 geht dann direkt wuchtiger zur Sache, Highspeed-Drums und heavy Riffing. Der Titeltrack beginnt dann eher andächtig, bevor er bedrohlich anschwillt. Ärger…gute 6 Minuten lang. Passend zum Titel kommt „Hammers of war“ dahergestampft. Wieder wuchtig, aber vom Tempo – zumindest anfangs – eher zurückhaltend.

Spannungsbogen…eine halbe Minute lang baut sich da was auf, bevor der Song – im Wechselspiel von Schlagzeug und Gitarren – Fahrt aufnimmt. Und die Fahrt nimmt später richtig Speed auf. Double Bass-Attacken, Metal Riffs, melodiöse Lead-Arbeit. Stark.

Apropos Riffs. Damit steigt man bei „Haunting in the abyss“ ein. Leider finde ich den Songaufbau bzw. die Umsetzung bei diesem sechsten Track recht eintönig. Da könnte es mehr Überraschungsmomente oder zumindest Abwechslung geben. Einen ähnlichen Eindruck habe ich dann auch wieder bei „The eternal harvest“. Der Rausschmeißer geht dann nach einer kurzen Einleitung recht bald zur Sache. Aber auch in dem Track gibt es leichte Hänger.

Als Produzent: Mark Mynett – Profi im Studio und auf der Bühne

Zur technischen Seite: die Scheibe wurde von Mark Mynett produziert, gemischt und gemastert. Mynett blickt nicht nur auf viele Jahre Live- und Studioerfahrung als Musiker (u.a. E-Gitarre bei CHINA BEACH und KILL II THIS) zurück, er ist auch schon lange Dozent and er Universität von Huddersfield.

Fazit: insgesamt eine starke zweite Scheibe (wobei ich fairerweise sagen muss, ich kenne das Debüt nicht!). Ein interessanter Stilmix. Leider sind manche Songs etwas langatmig und man fragt sich, ob es mehr als 7 Minuten Spielzeit sein müssen, oder ob hier nicht mehr Würze in einer kürzeren Version – mehr auf den Punkt – gelegen hätte. Manche Elemente sind durchaus sinnvoll, verlieren aber ihre Wirkung im Gesamtkonstrukt des Songs, wenn sie zu lange oder intensiv genutzt werden. Für Fans der Musikrichtung ist die neue Scheibe aber ein Kauftipp!
