LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT (Facebook) ist ein weiteres Projekt von Jens Faber, der mit DAWN OF DESTINY schon sehr lange erfolgreich im Musikbusiness am Start ist. Mit LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT huldigt er der legendären Band ‚Savatage‘. „Sorrow Is The Cure“ und „Hell“ sind bisher erschienen. In meinem Review zu „Hell“ habe ich unter anderem bemerkt:

Die inspirierenden Momente, die an Savatage erinnern, sind zweifelsohne vorhanden, doch sie sind Nuancen in einem Sound, der sich seine Eigenständigkeit bewahrt.

Ich bin sehr froh, dass diese Herangehensweise weiterhin in das Songwriting eingeflossen ist. Nach einem so starken Alben bisher sind die Erwartungshaltungen dementsprechend hoch. Ich mag den Stil und die Herangehensweise von Jens Faber. Die Handschrift von ihm kann man immer heraushören, aber er lotet auch gerne Grenzen aus und ist damit offen für neue musikalische Perspektiven. Jens Faber und seiner Band LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT ist es auf jeden Fall gelungen den Erwartungen gerecht zu werden und sogar darüber hinaus. Es gibt in der Tat einen eine Menge genialer Songs auf diesem Album. Das neue Album „Darkness“ setzt noch mal einen drauf. Und ich möchte sagen, dass LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT ihre musikalische Mission weiter perfektioniert haben.

Ein höllisch starker Sound

wird vom Start weg bei der Eröffnung mit „No Control“ entfacht. Ich kam zunächst gar nicht weiter mit dem Hören des Albums, da ich mir erst einmal den Opener einige Male anhören musste, weil er mich so begeisterte. Was für ein Hammer! Ein Song, der sofort gnadenlos einschlägt und für offene Münder sorgt. So war es zumindest bei mir. Ein Meisterwerk, dass so wahnsinnig viel zu bieten hat. Schon der Einstieg ist super gelungen und vermittelt eine dunkle majestätische Ausstrahlung. Dann geht es erst so richtig los. Die Riffs sind schwer und niederschmetternd. Ein Härtegrad, den ich so wirklich nicht vorhergesehen habe. Dann geht der Song auch noch knallhart in den Vollgasmodus. Geile fließende Tempiwechsel begeistern mich und plötzlich ertönt ein wundervoller kraftvoller Chorus. Aber die dunkle Härte gewinnt wieder die Oberhand und fegt über mich hinweg. Ein starkes Solo setzt dem Ganzen noch die Krone auf.

Was soll ich sagen? Schon der erste Song liefert so viele geile Eindrücke, dass ich völlig hin und weg bin. Nachdem ich dann den Song fünfmal gehört habe, schaffte ich es tatsächlich weiter auf die Reise zu gehen. Damit hat der Opener seine Aufgabe, nämlich von Anfang an die Begeisterung für das Album zu entflammen, mehr als erfüllt. Doch ich muss zugeben, dass ich mir nicht vorstellen konnte, wie man das Level halten könnte.

Der zweite Song „Rebirth“ geht die Reise dann doch gemächlicher an. Geile Riffs, erzählerische Parts und ein majestätischer Chorus prägen diesen Song, der kurzfristig während des Gitarrensolos an Energie gewinnt. Ein feines Musikstück, gehört für mich aber nicht zu den stärksten auf dem Album.

Nachdem mich „Rebirth“ etwas geerdet hat, nimmt mich „Darkness“ wieder voll mit und offenbart großartiges Songwriting mit seiner progressiven Herangehensweise. Es ist wieder ein Song, der ganz verschiedene Emotionen in einen einzigen Song verpackt. Ich persönlich finde das äußerst spannend. Äußerst spannend finde ich auch das variable Riffing bzw. das Gitarrenspiel allgemein auf dem Album, welches die Gestaltung der unterschiedlichen Stimmungen hinsichtlich der lyrischen Inhalte der Songs unheimlich stark und passend prägt.

So hört man beim Song „Hate“ richtig dunkle schwere Riffs, dass dem Ganzen eine mächtige düstere Atmosphäre verpasst. Mir gefallen hier auch vor allem die Vocals von Henning. Der kann nicht nur „schön“ singen, sondern auch herrlich düster und auch mit fiesen Tönen, die hier beispielsweise ab Minute 03:28 geschmettert werden. Einfach super! So verkörpert man dem Songtitel „Hate“ sehr eindrucksvoll, was auch für die Songs „The Witches Are Burning“ und „Another Devil“ gilt. Hier sind die Songtitel Programm, denn es sind düstere harte Brecher, die euch heimsuchen.

Eine Huldigung mit eigener Handschrift

Und das ist eben die Kunst. Man kann sich an Vorbildern orientieren und ihnen huldigen, aber nicht jedem gelingt es dabei seine eigene Handschrift zu bewahren. Das ist LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT wieder einmal grandios gelungen. Mal mehr und mal weniger kommen die SAVATAGE-Vibes durch. Sehr präsent sind diese vor allem dann, wenn das Piano erklingt und die gefühlsintensive Theatralik Einzug erhält. In diesem Zusammenhang muss man die gefühlvolle Pianoballade „Let The River Flow“, die monstermäßige Powerballade „Leave Me Alone“ nennen, welche in einem schönen Glanze erblüht und mit gefühlvollen traumhaften Arrangements aufwarten kann.

Aber auch wenn LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT härtemäßig aufdrehen und den Metal-Pegel nach oben treiben, sind diese Vibes irgendwie präsent. „I Don’t See The Light“ ist ein sehr schwerfälliger finsterer Song, der erneut mit einer fesselnden Atmosphäre punkten kann, zumal der Song wieder einmal mit einem unvermuteten zarten emotionalen Einschub ab Minute 03:22 für den besonderen Moment sorgt. Ich empfinde diese Mischung als sehr aufregend und das Konzept spricht mich voll an. Sänger Henning Basse ist dafür perfekt geeignet, denn seine fabelhafte Stimme eignet sich sowohl für den rauen harten Sound, als auch für die gefühlvollen Verwöhnmomente.

Und diese Kontrastmomente werden auf diesem Album in Perfektion verwoben, so dass man stetig ins Staunen gerät. Einige von diesen Songs habe ich schon beschrieben. Zu den absoluten Highlights gehört zweifelsohne auch „One Moment“. Was für ein Wechselbad der Eindrücke und Gefühle! Die Eindrücke sind so intensiv und vielfältig, dass man quasi immer wieder den Wunsch verspürt die Songs gleich noch einmal zu hören. Ich würde meinen, dass viele Songs noch um einiges progressiver aufgebaut sind als beim Debütalbum. Natürlich darf die Cover-Version eines SAVATAGE-Klassikers nicht fehlen und so erklingt als Finale der Song „Tonight He Grins Again“, der erwartungsgemäß einwandfrei dargeboten wird und dem Album einen großartigen Abschluss beschert.

Eine Anmerkung nebenbei…

Man muss sich davon lösen, LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT mit SAVATAGE zu vergleichen und auf eine Stufe zu stellen. SAVATAGE sind Kult und sie haben ihre eigene einzigartige aufregende Geschichte gelebt. LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT sind nicht SAVATAGE und wollen es auch gar nicht sein, obgleich sie diese Band als Inspiration gewählt haben. Es ist eine Ehrerbietung mit einer eigenen künstlerischen Handschrift. Und wenn man sich die Songs von LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT anhört, dann sind das ganz famose Kompositionen, die sowohl vom Songwriting und von der technischen Präsentation absolut erstklassig sind. Daher komme ich zu folgendem Ergebnis.

Fazit

LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT zeigen auf „Darkness“ weitere exquisite musikalische Darbietungen. Es wird noch härter und düsterer! Die Songs legen eine unbändige Power an den Tag. Doch natürlich dürfen die gefühlvollen Momente nicht fehlen. Damit ergibt sich im Gesamtbild ein sehr reichhaltiges Konzept, wobei die Songs zum großen Teil progressiver aufgebaut sind und eine Vielzahl von Eindrücken vermitteln. Die Geschichten des Albums sind in ihrer Ausgestaltung unheimlich fesselnd, so dass man das Album gerne immer wieder aufs neue rotieren lässt, um voller Begeisterung auf der imposanten Reise neue Dinge zu entdecken.

LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT (Facebook) is another project by musician Jens Faber, who has been successful in the music business for a long time with DAWN OF DESTINY. LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT pays homage to the legendary band SAVATAGE. „Sorrow Is The Cure“ and „Hell“ have been released so far. In my review of „Hell“ I noted, among other things:

I am very happy that this approach has continued to be incorporated into the songwriting. After such impressive albums so far, expectations are correspondingly high. I like Jens Faber’s style and approach. You can always hear his signature style, but he also likes to explore boundaries and is therefore open to new musical perspectives. Jens Faber and his band LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT have definitely succeeded in living up to expectations and even exceeding them. There are indeed a lot of brilliant songs on this album. The new album „Darkness“ goes one better and deeper. And I would like to say that LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT have further perfected their musical mission.

A hell of a sound

is ignited right from the start with the opening track „No Control“. I didn’t get any further with listening to the album at first, as I had to listen to the opener a few times first because it got me so excited. What a mighty hammer! A song that immediately and mercilessly hits you and leaves you open-mouthed. At least that’s how it was for me. A masterpiece that has so much to offer. Even the opening is super successful and conveys a dark, majestic aura. Then it really gets going. The riffs are heavy and devastating. A degree of heaviness that I really hadn’t anticipated. Then the song goes into full throttle mode. I’m thrilled by the cool, flowing tempo changes and suddenly a wonderfully powerful chorus is heard. But the dark heaviness gains the upper hand again and sweeps over me. A strong solo puts the crown on the whole thing.

What can I say? The first song already delivers so many great impressions that I’m completely blown away. After listening to the song five times, I actually managed to continue on the journey. So the opener more than fulfilled its task of igniting enthusiasm for the album right from the start. But I have to admit that I couldn’t imagine how the level could be maintained.

The second song, „Rebirth“, takes a more leisurely approach to the journey. Awesome riffs, narrative parts and a majestic chorus characterize this song, which briefly gains energy during the guitar solo. A fine piece of music, but for me it’s not one of the strongest on the album.

After „Rebirth“ grounded me a little, „Darkness“ takes me all the way again and reveals great songwriting with its progressive approach. It’s another song that packs very different emotions into a single song. Personally, I find that extremely fascinating. I also find the variable riffing and the guitar playing in general on the album extremely exciting, which characterizes the design of the different moods with regard to the lyrical content of the songs incredibly strongly and appropriately.

In the song „Hate“ you can hear really dark, heavy riffs that give the whole thing a powerful, dark atmosphere. I particularly like Henning’s vocals here. He can not only sing „beautifully“, but also wonderfully darkly and with nasty tones, which are belted out here from minute 03:28 for example. Simply superb! The song title „Hate“ is embodied very impressively, which also applies to the songs „The Witches Are Burning“ and „Another Devil“, because they are dark, hard crushers that haunt you.

A homage with its own signature

And that is art. You can take inspiration from role models and pay homage to them, but not everyone succeeds in preserving their own signature style. Once again, LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT have succeeded in doing just that. Sometimes more and sometimes less, the SAVATAGE vibes come through. These are particularly present when the piano plays and the emotional theatricality enters. In this context, the soulful piano ballad „Let The River Flow“ and the monster-like power ballad „Leave Me Alone“ must be mentioned, which blossoms in a beautiful glow and boasts soulful, dreamlike arrangements.

But even when LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT turn up the heat and drive up the metal level, these vibes are somehow present. „I Don’t See The Light“ is a very ponderous, dark song that once again scores with a captivating atmosphere, especially as the song once again provides a special moment with an unexpectedly tender emotional interlude from minute 03:22 onwards. I find this mixture very exciting and the concept really appeals to me. Singer Henning Basse is perfect for this, because his fabulous voice is suitable for both the rough hard sound and the soulful moments of indulgence.

And these contrasting moments are interwoven to perfection on this album, so that you are constantly amazed. I have already described some of these songs. One of the absolute highlights is undoubtedly „One Moment“. What a rollercoaster of impressions and feelings! The impressions are so intense and varied that you feel the desire to listen to the songs again and again. I would say that many of the songs are even more progressive than on the debut album. Of course, the cover version of a SAVATAGE classic should not be missing and so the finale is the song „Tonight He Grins Again“, which, as expected, is performed flawlessly and brings the album to a great close.

A side note

You have to get away from comparing LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT with SAVATAGE and putting them on the same level. SAVATAGE are cult and they have lived their own unique and exciting history. LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT is not SAVATAGE and doesn’t want to be, even though that band was chosen as inspiration. It is a tribute with its own artistic signature. And if you listen to the songs of LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT, then you can objectively state that they are absolutely first-class compositions, both in terms of songwriting and technical presentation. Therefore I come to the following conclusion.

Conclusion

LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT present further exquisite musical performances on „Darkness“. It gets even heavier and darker! The songs display unbridled power. But of course the emotional moments should not be missing. This results in a very rich overall concept, whereby the songs are largely more progressive in structure and convey a variety of impressions. The stories on the album are incredibly captivating in their design, so that the album can be rotated again and again to discover new things on the impressive journey full of excitement.

Ich bin ein großer Savatage Fan und werde natürlich hellhörig, wenn eine Band offiziell Savatage als Inspiration für ihren Sound angibt. LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT (Facebook) ist so eine Band! Und als Schirmherr zeichnet sich Jens Faber verantwortlich, der übrigens auch Gründer der Band DAWN OF DESTINY ist. Und die haben in diesem Jahr bereits ihr super Album „Of Silence“ veröffentlicht. Also scheint es Jens nicht an kreativen Ideen zu mangeln, denn heute am 04.11.’22 schickt er das neue Album „Hell“ von LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT ins Rennen.

Inspiration

ist eine tolle Sache und noch bemerkenswerter ist es, wenn Inspiration nicht zu einer bloßen Kopie wird. Dahingehend kann ich schon mal Entwarnung geben. Die inspirierenden Momente, die an Savatage erinnern, sind zweifelsohne vorhanden, doch sie sind Nuancen in einem Sound, der sich seine Eigenständigkeit bewahrt. LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT bewegt sich Gewässern des Melodic Metal und in den Stromschnellen wird es auch zum kraftvollen epischen Power Metal.

Hymnen

Die ersten Töne des Pianos beim Opener „Who Will Believe In Me“ stellen den Bezug zu Savatage natürlich umgehend her, aber dann entwickelt sich der Song zu einer gewaltigen Hymne, die mich unweigerlich von ihrer opulenten Erscheinung her an DAWN OF DESTINY erinnert. Man erkennt auf jeden Fall die Handschrift von Jens in den Songs, die durchweg auf dem Album zur Geltung kommt. Und das meine ich im positiven Sinne. Ebenfalls sehr positiv sticht bei der ganzen Geschichte

Sänger Henning Basse

(Metalium, ex- Firewind, Mayan) heraus, der hier eine sehr eindrucksvolle Leistung abliefert. Henning kann tonnenweise Gefühl in seine Stimme legen, aber genauso viel Kraft offenbaren. Mit dieser bemerkenswerten Kombination erklingen wahrlich geniale Erlebnisse. Ein imponierendes Beispiel dafür ist der Song „Run Faster“, den Ihr gleich hier genießen dürft. Hier vereinen sich gewaltige Power und epische Hooklines zu einem wahren Genuß. Fantastisch! Ganz groß sind auch die würzigen Momente, in denen Henning stimmlich eskaliert und markerschütternde Screams raushaut.

Imposant

Die Songs erstrahlen in einer Opulenz, die häufig eine theatralische Epik generiert. Man nehme z.B. den Titelsong „Hell“ mit einer Spielzeit von fast sieben Minuten, der sich langsam aber sicher wie einer Welle im Meer auftürmt, um dann mit voller Wucht einzuschlagen. Dies ist ein Konzept, welches gut funktioniert. Auch „And The World Has Lost This Fight“ erfährt im Verlauf Steigerungen und vollzieht Wendungen, die verschiedene Stimmungen produzieren und sogar zu einer wilden Attacke führen.

Apropos Angriffe.. LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT sorgen ebenfalls für schnelle imposante Offensiven. „Fury“ ist ein Beispiel für einen prügelnde Ansturm, der im furiosen Tempo alles erbarmungslos niedergaloppiert. So etwas aggressives und geradliniges hätte ich tatsächlich nicht unbedingt erwartet. Hier sei auch mal erwähnt, dass die Gitarren schön fett den Hammer kreisen lassen und auch die Soli sind aller Ehren wert. Lediglich der Bass hätte für mich generell noch mehr zum Vorschein kommen können. Insgesamt kristallisiert sich eine stimmige dichte Atmossphäre heraus, die von vorne bis hinten erhalten bleibt. Da macht der düstere Song „Our Bleeding“ keine Ausnahme und zeigt mal eine andere gesangliche Facette. Mir haben die Passagen mit der gedoppelten Stimme sehr gut gefallen. Mal was anderes.

Balladen

dürfen natürlich nicht fehlen und auch in den ruhigen emotionalen Gefilden glänzen LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT. Das zarte zerbrechliche „Times Of Despair“ mit seinen wundervollen Gesangslinien weiß sehr wohl zu verzaubern und bei dem pompösen „The Memory Remains“ kommen sogar Erinnerungen an Savatage hoch, denn Sänger Henning versprüht mitunter die Vibes von Jon Oliva.

Aber beim Cover vom Übersong „When The Crowds Are Gone“ von SAVATAGE treibt er es bis zur Vollendung. Ich war sehr gespannt auf die Umsetzung, als ich diesen Song als letzten Track erspähte. So etwas kann ja auch grandios in die Hose gehen. Und was soll ich sagen…. Es ist glücklicherweise einfach phänomenal geworden. Ja, ich gebe zu, dass ich Gänsehaut und fast Pippi in den Augen bekommen habe, als der Song sich mit den ersten Tönen in meine Ohren schmeichelte und sich dann zu einem wirklich phantastisch Erlebnis entwickelte. Dabei ist man glücklicherweise nah am Original geblieben und hat dem Song lediglich den Sound der Neuzeit geschenkt. So bekommt dieser legendäre Song ein wundervolle Würdigung auf einer gewaltigen musikalischen Bühne, die diesem Song mehr als gerecht wird.

Fazit

LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT vereinen im Album „Hell“ ein eigene musikalische Konzeption mit einer Hommage an die Band Savatage, was insgesamt zu einer kunstvollen höchst unterhaltsamen Darbietung wird. Das Konzept ist sehr stimming und ausgewogen. Einerseits stürmt kraftvolle Leidenschaft erhaben in glänzender stählerner Rüstung mit dem Schwert voran und andererseits werden schmeichelnde Emotionen in ein instrumentales anschmiegsames Gewand gekleidet. Alles ist mit hochwertigen Ingredienzien miteinander geschmiedet und verwoben worden, so dass das Album mit guten bis genialen Songs aufwarten kann.

Epic Power Metal

I’m a big Savatage fan and of course I’m going to be very curious when a band officially cites Savatage as the inspiration for their sound. LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT (Facebook) is such a band! And the patron is Jens Faber, who by the way is also the founder of the band DAWN OF DESTINY. And they have already released their super album „Of Silence“ this year. So Jens doesn’t seem to lack creative ideas, because today on 04.11.’22 he set the new album „Hell“ of LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT on fire.

Inspiration

is a great thing, and it’s even more remarkable when inspiration doesn’t become a mere copy. In this respect I can already give the all-clear. The inspirational moments reminiscent of SAVATAGE are undoubtedly present, but they are nuances in a sound that retains its own style. LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT moves waters of melodic metal and in the rapids it also becomes powerful epic power metal.

Hymns

The first notes of the piano in the opener „Who Will Believe In Me“ establish the reference to SAVATAGE immediately, of course, but then the song develops into a massive anthem that inevitably reminds me of DAWN OF DESTINY from its opulent appearance. You can definitely recognize Jens‘ signature in the songs, which is evident throughout the album. And I mean that in a positive sense. Also very positive

singer Henning Basse

(Metalium, ex- Firewind, Mayan) stands out in the whole story, who delivers a very impressive performance here. Henning can put tons of feeling into his voice, but reveal just as much power. With this remarkable combination, truly brilliant experiences resound. An impressive example of this is the song „Run Faster“, which you can enjoy right here. Here enormous power and epic hooklines unite to a true pleasure. Fantastic! Also great are the spicy moments, in which Henning escalates vocally and shoots out shattering screams.

Impressive

The songs shine in an opulence that often generates a theatrical epicness. Take, for example, the title track „Hell“ with a playing time of almost seven minutes, which slowly but surely piles up like a wave in the sea, only to hit with full force. This is a concept that works well. Also „And The World Has Lost This Fight“ experiences increases in the course and performs turns that produce different moods and even lead to a wild attack.

Speaking of attacks… LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT also provide fast imposing offensives. „Fury“ is an example of a thrashing onslaught that mercilessly gallops down everything at furious speed. I wouldn’t necessarily have expected something so aggressive and straightforward. Here it should also be mentioned that the guitars sounds grippy and fat. Also the solos are worthy. Only the bass could have generally come out more for me. Overall, a coherent dense atmosphere crystallizes, which is maintained from front to back. The dark song „Our Bleeding“ is no exception and shows a different vocal facet. I liked the passages with the doubled voice very much. Something different for a change.

Ballads

of course may not be missing and also in the quiet emotional realms LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT succeds. The delicate fragile „Times Of Despair“ with its wonderful vocal lines knows very well to enchant and with the pompous „The Memory Remains“ even memories of SAVATAGE come up, because singer Henning sometimes exudes the vibes of Jon Oliva.

But with the cover of the cult song „When The Crowds Are Gone“ by Savatage he pushes it to perfection. I was very curious about the realization when I spied this song as the last track. And what can I say…. Thankfully, it turned out just phenomenal. Yes, I admit that I got goose bumps and almost pee in my eyes when the song flattered itself into my ears with the first notes and then developed into a really fantastic experience. Fortunately, they stayed close to the original and only gave the song the sound of modern times. So this legendary song gets a wonderful tribute on a huge musical stage, which is more than fair to this song.

Conclusion

LEGIONS OF THE NIGHT combine in the album „Hell“ their own musical concept with a homage to the band SAVATAGE, which altogether becomes an artistic highly entertaining performance. The concept is very harmonious and balanced. On the one hand, powerful passion storms forward sublimely in shining steel armor with the sword high. And on the other hand, flattering emotions are dressed in an instrumental cuddly garment. Everything has been forged and interwoven with high-quality ingredients, so that the album can come up with good to brilliant songs.

Melodic Power Metal

Vor kurzer Zeit gab es hier bei ‚metal-heads.de‘ das Interview mit Mastermind Jens Faber (Link), der damals im Jahre 2005 die Band DAWN OF DESTINY (Facebook) gegründet hatte. Nun folgt also das Review von dem neuen Album „Of Silence“, welches nächste Woche am 24.06.2022 über El Puerto Records erscheinen wird. DAWN OF DESTINY können bereits auf eine sehr beachtliche Diskografie zurückblicken. Nachdem Jens Faber mit dem letzten Album „The Beast Inside“ ein wenig haderte und selber nicht zufrieden war mit dem Ergebnis war, wollte die Band nun wieder alles richtig machen. Das Album ist mit 13 Songs randvoll gepackt und glänzt mit einer Spielzeit von über einer Stunde. Kein einfaches Unterfangen, denn so eine Spielzeit will unterhaltsam gestaltet sein.

Ein opulenter Beginn

wird durch den Opener „We Are Your Voice“ vollzogen, der mit über acht Minuten Spielzeit auftritt. Gestartet wird mit sphärischen Synthies. Hier macht Dirk Raczkiewicz insgesamt auf dem Album einen super Job. Bald gesellen sich die melancholischen Streicher dazu, die wirklich gut klingen. Das liegt daran, dass DAWN OF DESTINY tatsächlich mit professionellen Streichern gearbeitet hat. Hier geben sich Laura Wessels an der Violine und Gerd Fischer am Cello die Ehre.

Sängerin Jeanette steigt ein und langsam baut sich der Song auf, bleibt aber zunächst auf der melodischen Schiene, doch dann werden die Weichen gestellt und es wird deutlich härter. Schwere Riffs brechen die Harmonie auf und der Song zeigt seine düstere Seite. Im weiteren Verlauf zeigt der Song immer wieder ein anderes Gesicht und bleibt dadurch durchweg höchstspannend. Die majestätischen Chöre sind ein wahrer Hörgenuß und sind das Sahnehäubchen auf dem Ganzen. Auch Jens trägt mit seinem Gesang wieder verstärkt zur Abwechslung bei. Für mich ist das wirklich eine Bereicherung im Sound von DAWN OF DESTINY. Er hat seine Fähigkeiten dahingehend nochmals verbessert und es ist ein Vergnügen dem Duett Jeanette und Jens zuzuhören.

Außerdem fallen die Streicher sehr postitiv auf und klingen richtig gut. Das liegt daran, dass DAWN OF DESTINY tatsächlich mit professionellen Streichern zusammengerabeitet hat. Ist halt immer noch ein Unterschied, ob die Klänge künstlich erzeugt oder live aufgenommen werden.

Schwere Riffs

bestimmen weiter das Geschehen. Der Härtegrad gefällt mir außerordentlich gut. Den hatte ich beim letzten Album vermisst. „Judas In Me“ stampft also mächtig voran und die fließenden Übergänge im Tempo sind sehr gut gelungen. Sängerin Jeanette passt sich mit ihrer Stimme der dunklen schweren Stimmung an und kann auch richtig dreckig rockig klingen. Damit rennt man bei mir ohnehin offene Türen ein.

Es werden immer wieder Akzente gesetzt, um keine Langeweile aufkommen zu lassen. Und dies gelingt durchaus. Darunter zähle ich auch die Gitarrenleads, die neben den harschen Riffs laufend für schöne Momente sorgen.

Chris Harms von LORD OF THE LOST

ist als Gastsänger beim Song „Childhood“ vertreten und veredelt diesen mit seiner charismatischen unverwechselbaren Stimme. „Childhood“ hat daher seinen ganz besonderen Charme auf dem Album und zaubert sich direkt ins Ohr, um sich dort festzusetzen. Auch hier klingt das gesangliche Duett phänomenal und der Chorus hat eine erhabene Ausstrahlung.

Gar ungewöhliche Klänge

bietet der Song „White Mystery“, der zunächst heroisch hymnenhaft beginnt und ein wenig seemännisches Feeling versprüht. Die Mannschaft stimmt sich ein und dann an die Ruder auf in die tosende See. Echt cooler Einstieg in den Song, der noch so manche Überraschung auf Lager hat. Neben schweren Riffwellen wird es dann auch zwischndurch recht stürmig und es geht brüsk nach vorne. Die Reise ist sehr abwechslungreich gestaltet und Jens kommt plötzlich aus den Untiefen mit dunklen Growls. (Allerdings ist dies der einzige Moment dieser Art auf dem Album.) Ein spannender Ansatz, den man meiner Meinung nach noch etwas mehr verfolgen könnte. „White Mystery“ ist mich ein weiteres großes Highlight auf dem Album. Nachfolgend brettert „Not The Way It Is“ voran, bei dem mir das geile rasende Gitarrensolo fantastisch gefallen hat.

Nach der ganzen Hatz

kommt das Album mit „Little Flower“ als erste der beiden Balladen ein wenig zur Ruhe. Qualitativ über jeden Zweifel erhaben erklingen wundervolle Melodien. „Silence“ gesellt sich später noch als zweite Ballade hinzu und ist ebenfalls schön anzuhören.

Allerdings hat ist mir in der Kategorie Balladen der Song „Inner Voice“ besonders ins Herz geschossen. Zugegeben, der Song kommt schon recht schwer und massig daher und manche mögen es nicht als Ballade bezeichnen. Für mich ist es eine kraftvolle Ballade, die von Grund auf eine eher dunkle schwermütige Stimmung verbreitet, aber zwischendurch mit einem wunderschönen Refrain Licht ins Dunkel bringt, vor allem wenn Jeanette einmal in die ganz hohen Oktaven wechselt. Ein Traum!

„Burning Heart“ zieht das Tempo wieder an. Mit einem schön griffigen Bass und der warmen dunkleren Stimmlage von Jens erzeugt der Song Gothik-Vibes. Ansonsten begeistern die übrigen Songs auf gleich hohem Niveau, auf dem sich auch der druckvolle Song „Say My Name“ befindet.

Fazit

DAWN OF DESTINY gelingt mit ihrem neuen Album „Of Silence“ ein Geniestreich. Selten hört man ein Album, welches über eine solch lange Spielzeit die Spannung aufrecht erhalten kann. Aber hier gelingt es mit eindrucksvollen abwechslungreichen Kompositionen, die in sich ein homogenes Gesamtbild abgeben. Ich jedenfalls kann von dem Album gar nicht genug bekommen und ich habe es nun wirklich schon sehr sehr oft durchgehört. Es ist ein durchdachtes detailverliebtes Album ohne Schwächen mit geistreichen Kompositionen und einer schweren melancholischen Härte.

Nicht unerwähnt lassen möchte ich das schön gestaltete Coverartwork, welches sehr künstlerisch die Stimmung des Albums einfängt. Wer sich etwas besonderes gönnen möchte, der sollte sich die auf 100 Stück limitierte Metalbox gönnen. Die gibt es hier:

Melodic Power Metal

A short time ago ‚metal-heads.de‘ published an interview with mastermind Jens Faber (Link), who founded the band DAWN OF DESTINY in 2005. Now follows the review of the new album „Of Silence“, which will be released next week on 24.06.2022. DAWN OF DESTINY (Facebook) can already look back on a very impressive discography. After Jens Faber struggled a bit with the last album „The Beast Inside“ and was not satisfied with the result himself, the band now wanted to do everything right again. The album is packed to the brim with 13 songs and shines with a playing time of over an hour. No easy undertaking, because such a playing time needs to be entertaining.

A sumptuous beginning

is accomplished by the opener „We Are Your Voice“, which has a playing time of over eight minutes. It starts with spherical synths. Dirk Raczkiewicz does a super job overall on the album. Soon the melancholic strings join in, which sound really good. That’s because DAWN OF DESTINY actually worked with professional string players. It’s still a difference whether the sounds are artificially created or recorded live.

The singer Jeanette enters and slowly the song builds up, but at first it stays on the melodic track, but then the course is set and it becomes clearly heavier. Heavy riffs break up the harmony and the song shows its dark side. In the further course, the song shows a different face again and again and thus remains highly exciting throughout. The majestic choirs are a real listening pleasure and are the icing on the cake. Jens also contributes his vocals again, which for me is a real enrichment in the sound of DAWN OF DESTINY. He has improved his skills again and it is a pleasure to listen to the duet Jeanette and Jens.

Heavy riffs

continue to determine the action. I like the degree of hardness extraordinarily well. I had missed it on the last album. So „Judas In Me“ stomps mightily ahead and the flowing transitions in the tempo are very well done. Singer Jeanette adapts with her voice to the dark heavy mood and can also sound really dirty rocky. With this they meet exactly my taste.

There is always an attempt to set accents in order to avoid boredom. And this succeeds quite well. Among them I also count the guitar leads, which constantly provide beautiful moments next to the harsh riffs.

Chris Harms from LORD OF THE LOST

is featured as a guest singer on the song „Childhood“ and enhances it with his charismatic distinctive voice. „Childhood“ therefore has its own special charm on the album and conjures itself directly into the ear to settle there. Here, too, the vocal duet sounds phenomenal and the chorus has a sublime charisma.

Even unusual sounds

offers the song „White Mystery“, which starts heroic hymn-like and sprays a little sailors feeling. So on to the oars and into the roaring sea. Really cool introduction to the song, which still has some surprises in store. In addition to heavy riff waves, it is then also quite stormy and it goes brusquely forward. The journey is very diversified and Jens suddenly comes out of the shallows with dark growls. (The only moment of this kind on the album, though.) An exciting approach that could be pursued a bit more, in my opinion. For me, another big highlight on the album. Following „Not The Way It Is“ brisks ahead and shines with a really cool raging guitar solo.

After all the hunt

the album comes to rest a little with „Little Flower“. The first of two ballads makes its entrance. Wonderful sweet melodies coming along. „Silence“ joins them later as the second ballad and is also beautiful to listen to.

However, in the ballad category, the song „Inner Voice“ particularly struck my heart. Admittedly, the song comes across quite heavy and massive and some might not call it a ballad. For me it is a powerful ballad, which spreads a rather dark melancholic mood from the ground up, but in between brings light into the darkness with a beautiful chorus, especially when Jeanette once changes into the very high octaves. A dream!

„Burning Heart“ picks up the pace again. With a nice gripping bass and the warm darker vocal range of Jens, the song creates gothic vibes. Apart from that, the other songs inspire on the same high level, which also includes the powerful song „Say My Name“.

Fazit

DAWN OF DESTINY succeeds with their new album „Of Silence“. Rarely you hear an album that can maintain the tension over such a long playing time. But here it succeeds with impressive varied compositions, which give a homogeneous overall picture. I, for one, can’t get enough of this album and I’ve listened to it many, many times. It is a thoughtful detail-loving album without weaknesses with witty compositions and a heavy melancholic harshness.

DAWN OF DESTINY (Facebook) können nach Gründung 2005 auf eine lange Reihe von Alben zurückblicken, die größtenteils sehr wohlwollend von den Magazinen und Fans aufgenommen wurden. Die Veröffentlichung des neuen Albums „Of Silence“ am 24.06.2022 haben wir von ‚metal-heads.de‘ als Anlaß genommen, um mit Mastermind Jens Faber ein Interview zu machen. Viel Spaß dabei!

Musikalische Geburtsstunde

MH: Hi Jens. Schön, dass Du mich in Deinem sicherlich eng gestrickten Zeitplan noch unterbringen konntest. Eure Band gibt es seit 2005. Ist schon ein Weilchen her. Beleuchten wir doch noch mal kurz Deine musikalische Geburtsstunde. Kannst Du Dich noch an diese Zeit erinnern?

Jens: Puhhh… Das war so in der Zeit, als ich Zivildienst in einer Behindertenwerkstatt gemacht habe. Dort habe ich andere Zivildienstleistende kennengelernt und irgendwie hatten wir dann gemeinsam die Lust und das Interesse etwas musikalisches zu machen. Dann haben wir unsere ersten Versuche dahingehend gestartet. Ich habe auch dann erst angefangen Gitarre zu spielen und habe gemerkt, dass ich ein gewisses Talent habe Songs zu schreiben. Irgendwann hatte sich eine Sängerin gemeldet (Tanja Maul) und wir nahmen unsere ersten Demos auf. So ging dann alles seinen üblichen Weg: Demos verschicken, auf Rückmeldungen von Labels warten, Album aufnehmen.

Qualität von Reviews

MH: Eure Alben, auch die frühen Werke, sind ja generell immer gut bei den Kritikern angekommen, oder?

Jens: Ja es geht. Zumindest bei den Online-Magazinen und Plattformen kamen wir immer gut an, wohingegen wir bei den großen Print-Medien nicht ganz so angesagt waren.

MH: Ich habe früher die großen Magazine wie beispielsweise ‚RockHard‘ oder ‚Metal Hammer‘ immer gelesen. Da gab es das Internet noch gar nicht und es war quasi die einzige Informationsquelle, die man hatte. Schon damals fand ich es allerdings schade, wenn man ein Album mit drei oder vier Sätzen abgehandelt hat, gerade wenn die Alben von Bands waren, die damals nicht on Top waren. Selbstverständlich sind so einem Printmagazin platzmäßig Grenzen gesetzt, aber ich hätte mir insgesamt ausführlichere Reviews gewünscht und mehr Support für die Newcomer. Damals war es schwierig verschiedene Reviews von den Alben zu bekommen. Heute ist es dank des Internets einfacher geworden.

Begründete Kritik ist okay

Jens: Was mich generell an manchen Reviews stört, ist der Umstand, dass Redakteure eigentlich in ihren Texten die eigene Meinung niederschreiben, aber ihre Einschätzung als gottgegeben hinstellen. Gerade bei den großen Printmedien weiß man aus eigener Erfahrung von früher, dass man sich durchaus von so etwas leiten lässt. Und wenn dann geschrieben wird, dass es der letzte Scheiß ist, dann wird das auch genauso angenommen. Das war schon immer so, müsste aber nicht so sein. Man könnte Kritiken auch durchaus diplomatischer formulieren. Natürlich kann man Kritik äußern, aber sie sollte auch vernünftig begründet werden können. Dann ist das völlig in Ordnung.

MH: Da muss ich Dir Recht geben. Es kommt manchmal vor, dass Leute einen Verriss förmlich zelebrieren und ein Album in übelster vernichtender Art und Weise niedermachen. Dies passiert auch gerade meist dann, wenn ein Redakteur ein Album rezensiert oder rezensieren muss, dessen Musikrichtung er von Grund auf schon nicht gut findet. Wie soll dabei eine gerechte Bewertung stattfinden?

DAWN OF DESTINY & Jon Oliva

Jens: Wir hatten das vor einigen Jahren, als Jon Oliva von SAVATAGE bei einem Song von uns mitgewirkt hatte („No Hope For The Healing“). Dann hatten wir auf einmal sooo viele Kritiken, also erheblich mehr als sonst. Da waren so viel Leute bei, die uns bisher gar nicht auf dem Schirm hatten oder gehabt hätten, und nur aufgrund dieses Songs sich mit uns beschäftigt haben. Das hat uns selbstverständlich pushen können. Aber letztlich konnten einige dieser Leute trotzdem nichts mit unserer Musik anfangen, auch wenn Jon Oliva bei einem Song mitgesungen hatte.

MH: Wo wir gerade bei dem Thema sind…Du hattest bereits regelmäßig recht prominente Gastmusiker für einige deiner Songs gewinnen können. Die holt man sich bestimmt nicht mal eben so nebenbei ab. Da braucht es schon Professionalität und Qualität…

Jens: Ich glaube jetzt tatsächlich, dass es in unserem Fall gar nicht so sehr mit einer professionellen Herangehensweise zu tun gehabt hat. Ich habe die Leute nämlich teilweise wirklich auf „doof“ angeschrieben. Das hat uns deswegen sehr in unserer Sache bestärkt, denn die Musiker haben sich darauf eingelassen, weil ihnen schlichtweg die Songs gefallen haben. Das ist bei Jon Oliva so und beispielsweise auch aktuell bei Chris Harms von LORD OF THE LOST der Fall gewesen. Der hat nichts dafür haben wollen, sondern er hat es gemacht, weil er es gut fand. Dadurch fühl man sich natürlich sehr bestätigt in dem, was man tut. Es freut einen ungemein, wenn andere tolle Musiker derart begeistert von unserer Musik sind.

Konsumieren statt Zelebrieren

MH: Wo Du gerade Jon Oliva erwähnt hast… Ich habe vor kurzem das Re-Release von „Streets-A Rock Opera“ über earMUSIC bekommen. Es ist ein wahres Kultalbum und das mehrseitige Booklet erzählt viele Geschichten über die Entstehung des Albums, wodurch ich wieder einen ganz anderen Bezug zu dem Album bekommen habe. Dabei habe ich mir noch gedacht, dass viele Hörer gar nicht wissen, was für eine Arbeit und wieviel Mühe hinter der Produktion eines Albums steckt. Dies finde ich sehr schade, weil es heutzutage wahrscheinlich noch viel mehr der Fall ist, dass die Leute sich nicht mehr so intensiv mit einem Album beschäftigen. Früher hat man einen Plattenkauf noch zelebriert. Man ist ganz aufgeregt in den Plattenladen gefahren und ist stolz wie Oskar mit seiner Beute nach Hause zurückgekehrt und hat sich dort die Scheibe zigmal angehört, um jedes Detail aufzusaugen.

Jens: Ja, das ist leider so. Die Leute konsumieren eher als dass sie sich mit Dingen lange und intensiv beschäftigen. Früher hat man Alben richtig entgegengefiebert und sein Taschengeld dafür gespart. Heute klickt man einfach auf einen Stream und fertig. Fluch und Segen gleichermaßen.

Der Wunsch nach dem großen Wurf

MH: Ihr seid ebenfalls ein Beispiel für eine Band, bei der man das Gefühl hat, dass sie eigentlich eine höhere Daseinsstufe verdient hätten, sprich einen größeren Erfolg. Wie siehst Du das?

Jens: Hin und wieder bekommen wir das von verschiedenen Seiten zu hören und das freut uns natürlich. Es ist schwer zu erklären, denn es gehören so viele Faktoren dazu, die zusammenspielen müssen, damit eine Band den endgültigen Durchbruch erlangt. Hierzu zählen richtige Zeitpunkte, Kontakt zu entsprechenden Leuten, von medialer Aufmerksamkeit, vom richtigen Label, aber wirklich vor allem vom richtigen Zeitpunkt. Bisher war es uns irgendwie nicht vergönnt und die entsprechenden Fäden sind noch nicht zusammengelaufen, so dass wir richtig groß rausgekommen sind. Doch wir haben eine sehr treue relativ große Fanbase und bei Spotify haben wir 20.000 Hörer. Das ist doch schon gar nicht so schlecht.

Mittlerweile muss es gar nicht mehr der große Wurf sein. Wenn es reicht, um immer wieder ein Album aufzunehmen und damit die Leute zu erreichen, ist das doch schon schön. Früher hätte man es sich wohl anders gewünscht, aber ich bin jetzt eben auch keine zwanzig Jahre mehr jung.

Prioritäten verschieben sich

MH: Genau! So ergeht es vielen. Man wird älter, hat einen Beruf und womöglich Familie. Wäre ein großer Erfolg und die damit verbundenen Verpflichtungen und Mehraufwand überhaupt noch umsetzbar?

Jens: Das ist eine berechtigte Frage. Früher hätte ich für einen großen musikalischen Erfolg alles stehen und liegen lassen. Das würde ich wohl heutzutage nicht mehr tun. Denn ein sicherer Job, der mir auf lange Sicht das Leben finanziert, ist selbstverständlich wichtiger.

Rückkehr von Gitarrist Veith Offenbächer

MH: Ihr hattet in der Vergangenheit einige Personalwechsel. Nun seid ihr aber schon länger in der gleichen Besetzung unterwegs oder hat sich etwas geändert?

Jens: Es stimmt, dass wir in der Konstellation bereits lange zusammenarbeiten. Und unser Gitarrist Veith Offenbächer ist nun auch wieder fester Bestandteil der Band, was uns sehr freut.

MH: Ohhh, das ist ja schön, denn er war ja seinerzeit nach Schweden ausgewandert. Toll, dass er jetzt wieder zurück ist! Zumal Du seinerzeit mal erwähnt hattest, dass ihr Euch menschlich super verstanden habt.

Mut zur Eigenkritik

MH: Ich bin übrigens recht spät auf Euch aufmerksam geworden, nämlich als ich Ihr Euer Album „To Hell“ in die Finger bekommen habe. Ich war von dem Album sehr angetan, sticht in Eurer Diskografie vor allem durch seine Aggressivität hervor. Der Nachfolger „The Beast Inside“ klingt für mich eher zurückhaltender und melancholischer. Es hat mich trotz toller Passagen aber tatsächlich nicht so gepackt wie „To Hell“ und ich fand es auch nicht so spannend und inspiririerend umgesetzt wie beipielsweise „Fear“.

Jens: Ich find das schon interessant, weil viele Leute Songs ganz unterschiedlich wahrnehmen. „The Beast Inside“ war für mich zugegebenermaßen schon kurz nach Fertigstellung nicht die große Erfüllung. Es ist das erste Mal, dass ich das Gefühl hatte, dass es nicht wirklich gut ist. Ich dachte beim Release, dass es definitiv nicht unser bestes Album ist. Das lag wohl mitunter daran, dass wir viele alte Songs „verbraten“ haben, die ich vor Jahren mal geschrieben habe und damals nicht gut genug waren, um auf ein Album zu kommen. Warum sollen sie es also später sein? Das muss ich mir fairerweise eingestehen. Das war nicht wirklich kreativ.

Das haben wir beim kommenden Release „Of Silence“ wieder erheblich besser hinbekommen. Die Band sieht es genauso und für uns ist es das beste Album seit unserem Alltime-Favorite „Fear“ .

„Of Silence“

MH: So… jetzt kommen wir zu Eurem neuen Album „Of Silence“, welches am 24.06. endlich veröffentlicht wird. Ich durfte mir das Album schon vorweg anhören und oben gab es gerade das Video zu „Judas In Me“. Als ich zum ersten Mal das Album hörte, lag ich entspannt mit einem Bierchen in der Sonne. Ich war schon vom Opener „We Are Your Voice“ geflasht, der direkt mit einer opulenten Spielzeit von über acht Minuten seinen großen Auftritt hat.

Jens: In der Tat ist es ungewöhnlich mit einem so langen Song in das Album einzusteigen, aber es war Teil dieses Albumkonzepts, es mit einem langen progressiveren Track zu beginnen und auch mit einem solchen zu beenden.

Gelungene Mischung

MH: Ich finde es insgesamt eine sehr gelungene Mischung aus Euren besten Zutaten. Einerseits wird man  von schweren dunklen Riffs befeuert, andererseits gibt es aber auch höchst melodische Einlagen. Der Song „Inner Voice“ hat z.B. einen Hammerrefrain zum niederknien. Göttlich! Meiner Meinung nach habt ihr eine sehr homogene Mixtur aus harten Riffs, Melodie und einer tollen Atmosphäre erschaffen.

Jens: Das ist schön. Ist ja nun auch eine der ersten Reaktionen, die wir darauf erfahren. Es ist von uns relativ schwer einzuschätzen, wie die Reaktionen sein werden, da viele unterschiedliche Songs darauf enthalten sind. Wenn man schon alleine die ersten drei Songs hört, wird man feststellen, dass sie alle unterschiedliche Stile verkörpern. Da muss man als Hörer für offen sein und vielleicht ist das nicht so jedermanns Sache.

MH: Auch die symphonischen Elemente sind diesmal toll herausgearbeitet und klingen zum Teil sehr organisch.

Jens: Das freut mich sehr. Es war auch diesmal unser Anspruch mit echten Streichern zusammenzuarbeiten, was auch für uns noch einmal ein anderes Gefühl vermittelt hat. Die sind bei den Songs „We Are Your Voice“ und „The Curse“ zu hören.

Jens singt wieder mehr

MH: Du bist auf dem neuen Album auch gesangstechnisch wieder mehr vertreten und ich finde, dass das schon eine gesunde Varianz reinbringt.

Jens: Auf dem letzten Album war mein Gesang weniger vorhanden. Diesmal bin ich wieder mehr zu hören und ich glaube ebenfalls, dass es dadurch abwechslungsreicher wirkt. Ich bin zwar kein Bruce Dickenson, aber ich denke für die Zwecke geht das völlig in Ordnung. Und von daher ist es eben ein fester Bestandteil bei uns.

MH: So sehe ich das auch! Jetzt sind wir am Ende des Interviews angelangt. Jens, Ich danke Dir für Deine Zeit und wünsche Euch viel Erfolg mit dem neuen Album „Of Silence“. DAWN OF DESTINY (Facebook) are a constant factor in the music business and can look back on a long series of albums, most of which have been received very favorably by the magazines and fans. The release of the new album „Of Silence“ comes on 24.06.2022. We from ‚metal-heads.de‘ have taken this as an occasion to make an interview with mastermind Jens Faber. Have fun with it!

Musical birth

MH: Hi Jens. I’m glad you give us the opportunity for this interview. Your band exists since 2005, it’s been a while. Let’s take a look at your musical birth. Can you still remember that time?

Jens: Puhhh… That was during the time when I did my community service in a workshop for the disabled. There I met other people like me and somehow we had the desire and the interest to do something musical together. Then we started our first attempts in that direction. I started to play guitar from this time on and realized that I have a certain talent to write songs. At some point a singer got in touch (Tanja Maul) and we recorded our first demos. So everything went its usual way: sending demos, waiting for feedback from labels, recording the album.

Quality of reviews

MH: Your albums, even the early works, have generally always been well received by the critics, haven’t they?

Jens: Yes somehow. At least with the online magazines and platforms, we were always well received, whereas we weren’t quite as popular with the big print media.

MH: In the past I used to read the big magazines like ‚RockHard‘ or ‚Metal Hammer‘. The internet didn’t even exist then and it was practically the only source of information you had. Even back then I thought it was a pity if an album was covered in three or four sentences, especially if the albums were from bands that weren’t on top at that time. Of course a print magazine is spacely limited, but I would have liked to see more detailed reviews overall and more support for the newcomers. Back then it was difficult to get different reviews of the albums. Today it’s easier thanks to the Internet.

Reasoned criticism is okay

Jens: What generally bothers me about some reviews is the fact that editors actually write down their own opinion in their texts, but present their assessment as God-given. Especially with the big print media, you know from your own experience from the past that you can definitely be guided by something like that. And if it is then written that it is the latest crap, then that is also accepted in the same way. That’s always been the case, but it doesn’t have to be. One could also formulate criticism more diplomatically. Of course, you can criticize, but it should also be reasonably justified. Then that’s perfectly fine.

MH: I have to agree with you there. It sometimes happens that people put down an album in the worst destructive way. This happens especially when an editor reviews or has to review an album whose music style he doesn’t like from the ground up. How is a fair evaluation supposed to take place?

Jens: We had that a few years ago, when Jon Oliva from SAVATAGE had participated in a song of ours („No Hope For The Healing“). Then we suddenly had sooo many reviews, so considerably more than usual. There were so many people who didn’t have us on their radar or wouldn’t have had us until then, and only because of this song they got involved with us. That pushed us, of course. But in the end, some of these people still couldn’t do anything with our music, even though Jon Oliva sang on one song.

MH: While we’re on the subject…you’ve already been able to regularly get some quite prominent guest musicians for some of your songs. You certainly don’t just pick them up easily. You need professionalism and quality…

Jens: I now actually believe that in our case it didn’t have so much to do with a professional approach. I just casually wrote to people. That’s why it really strengthened our case, because the musicians got involved because they simply liked the songs. That was the case with Jon Oliva and also, for example, with Chris Harms from LORD OF THE LOST. He didn’t want anything in return, but did it because he thought it was good. So of course we feel very confirmed in what we are doing. It makes us very happy when other great musicians are so enthusiastic about our music.

Consume instead of celebrate

MH: Since you just mentioned Jon Oliva… I recently got the re-release of „Streets-A Rock Opera“ via earMUSIC. It’s a true magnificent album and the multi-page booklet tells a lot of stories about the making of the album, which gave me a completely different connection to the album again. At the same time I still thought that many listeners don’t even know what kind of work and how much effort is behind the production of an album. I find this very unfortunate, because nowadays it’s probably much more the case that people don’t spend so much time on an album. In the past, you still celebrated a record purchase. You went to the record store all excited and proudly came home with your loot, listening to the record umpteen times to soak up every detail.

Jens: Yes, that’s unfortunately the case. People tend to consume rather than deal with things long and intensively. In the past, people really looked forward to albums and saved their pocket money for them. Today, you just click on a stream and that’s it. A curse and a blessing in equal measure.

The desire for success

MH: You are also an example of a band where one has the feeling that they actually deserve a higher level of existence, i.e. greater success. How do you see that?

Jens: Every now and then we get to hear that from different sides and that makes us happy, of course. It’s hard to explain, because there are so many factors that have to work together for a band to achieve the final breakthrough. These include the right timing, contact with the right people, media attention, the right label, but really above all the right time. So far it was somehow not granted to us and the appropriate threads have not yet come together, so that we have come out really big. But we have a very loyal relatively large fanbase and on Spotify we have 20,000 listeners. That’s not bad at all.

In the meantime, it doesn’t have to be the big hit. If it’s enough to record an album again and again and reach people with it, that’s nice. In the past, you would have wanted it differently, but I’m not twenty years young anymore.

Priorities are shifting

MH: Exactly! That’s what happens to many people. You get older, have a job and possibly a family. Would a great success and the associated obligations and additional work still be feasible at all?

Jens: That’s a legitimate question. In the past, I would have dropped everything for a big musical success. I probably wouldn’t do that nowadays. Because a secure job that finances my life in the long term is obviously more important.

Return of guitarist Veith Offenbächer

MH: You had some line-up changes in the past. But now you have been on the road with the same line-up for a longer time or has something changed?

Jens: It’s true that we have been working together in the constellation for a long time. And our guitarist Veith Offenbächer is now also a permanent part of the band again, which makes us very happy.

MH: Ohhh, that’s nice, because he had emigrated to Sweden sometime ago. Great that he is back now! Especially since you had mentioned at the time that he is a nice guy who fits perfectly to the band.

Courage for self-criticism

MH: By the way, I became aware of you quite late, namely when I got hold of your album „To Hell“. I was very taken by the album, stands out in your discography especially by its aggressiveness. The successor „The Beast Inside“ sounds more restrained and melancholic to me. Despite great passages, it really didn’t grab me like „To Hell“ and I didn’t find it as exciting and inspiring as „F.E.A.R.“ (the predecessor of „To Hell“), for example.

Jens: I find that interesting, because many people perceive songs very differently. „The Beast Inside“ was admittedly not the great fulfillment for me shortly after completion. It’s the first time I felt it wasn’t really good. I thought at the release that it was definitely not our best album. I think that was partly because we took a lot of old songs that I wrote years ago and weren’t good enough to be on an album then. So why should they be later? I have to admit that to myself, to be fair. That wasn’t really creative.

We have managed to do that much better with the upcoming release „Of Silence“. The band sees it the same way and for us it’s the best album since our all-time favorite „F.E.A.R.“.

„Of Silence“

MH: So… now we come to your new album „Of Silence“, which will finally be released on June 24. I was allowed to listen to the album in advance. Remembering I was lying relaxed with a beer in the sun and started the album! I was immediatly flashed by the opener „We Are Your Voice“, which has its big entrance directly with an opulent playing time of over eight minutes.

Jens: Indeed, it is unusual to enter the album with such a long song, but it was part of this album concept to start it with a long progressive track and also to end it with one.

Successful mixture

MH: I think it’s a very successful mix of your best ingredients overall. In my opinion, you have created a very homogeneous mixture of hard riffs, melody and a great atmosphere. The song „Inner Voice“ for example has an awesome chorus. Divine!

Jens: That’s nice. It’s also one of the first reactions we’ve had to it. It is relatively difficult for us to estimate how the reactions will be, because there are many different songs on it. If you listen to the first three songs alone, you will notice that they all embody different styles. As a listener, you have to be open to that and maybe it’s not everyone’s cup of tea.

MH: The symphonic elements are also worked out great this time and sound very organic in parts.

Jens: I’m very pleased about that. It was also our claim this time to work together with real strings, which also gave us another different feeling. You can hear them on the songs „We Are Your Voice“ and „The Curse“.

The vocals of Jens

MH: On the new album you are also represented more vocally and I think that already brings in a healthy variance.

Jens: On the last album my vocals were less present. This time I can be heard more again and I also think it makes it more varied. I’m no Bruce Dickenson, but I think for the purposes it’s totally fine. And from there it is just a fixed component with us.
