Grunge Rock

Im Dezember 2020 hatte ich für ‚metal-heads.de‘ bereits über die junge Band REVERSE (Facebook) aus Dorsten berichtet, nachdem sie ihr Album „Deadlocked“ (Review) veröffentlicht hatten. Seinerzeit hatte ich den Sound als roh, rau und dreckig bezeichnet. Und daran hat sich glücklichweise nichts geändert.

„Hysteria“

heißt der neue kleine Output mit sechs Songs. Epische progressive Songs mit überlanger Spielzeit sind weiterhin nicht das Ding von REVERSE. Der längste Song „Lesson Learned“ auf dem Album geht 03:45 und der kürzeste Song „The Devil Leaves The Sky“ schafft es gerade einmal auf 02:14. Die Jungs sind eben für die schnelle Nummer zu haben, ganz ohne Vorspiel oder Nachtisch. Da geht es kurz und knackig zur Sache. Aber hey, so ganz stimmt das mit dem Vorspiel nicht, denn der Opener „Black Halo“ beginnt mit einer witzigen Sache. Denn man hat ein kurzes verbales Intermezzo zwischen Sänger Chris mit dem Drummer Micha beim finalen Mix beibehalten. Leider hört man nicht, worüber sich der Drummer im Vorfeld beschwert hat, aber der Sänger reagiert echt cool darauf und alle sind wieder entspannt. So kann es losgehen! Allerdings ist die Mucke alles andere als entspannt.

Der Song „Black Halo“ selber stampft wütend drauflos. Die Riffs kommen wieder gewohnt typisch dreckig und fett daher. Ja, und der Sänger klingt ein wenig irre und verrückt, wobei er mit einer gehörigen schmutzigen Portion Aggression daherkommt.

Von jedem etwas bitte, aber mit Schmackes!

Hatte ich beim Opener von „Wut“ gesprochen? Nun….gegen den Folgesong „In My World“ ist der Opener fast noch ne Gute-Laune-Nummer. „In My World“ ist ein brutaler Brecher, der mit einer düsteren Stimmung und verrückten Speed Attacken alles niedermäht.

Und schwuppdiwupps erklingen bei „Where Is The Crown“ schon beinahe rockige melodische Riffakkorde. Das klingt locker beschwingt, aber behält sich trotzdem diese gemeine aggressive Attitüde, was mitunter an der markigen Stimme von Chris liegt. Der Song „Dismays“ lässt die Punksau raus und knüppelt ohne Gnade.

„Lesseon Learned“ nimmt das Tempo zurück. Macht aber nix, denn hier gibt es coole Kontraste zwischen ruhigeren Passagen, die von einem schweren Bass dominiert werden, und riffbetonten Ausbrüchen. Und zum Ende schenken uns REVERSE endlich mal ein Gitarrensolo, dessen helle Klänge wie Sonnenstrahlen durch das raue dunkle Riffunwetter hindurchscheinen. Dies ist tatsächlich mein Lieblingstrack.

Fazit

REVERSE haben mit „Hysteria“ eine echt coole EP rausgehauen. Die raue erdige Produktion passt perfekt zur Musik und fängt diese authentisch ein. Der Sound hat dabei noch mehr Bumms bekommen und man hat wirklich drauf Wert gelegt dem Sound noch mehr Facetten zu verpassen. Hier gibt es Einflüsse von Punk und Rock‘ n Roll oder auch aus der düsteren Ecke des Metal. Die knackigen kurzen Songs knallen gut durch. Besonders gut hat mir aber der längste Song „Lesson Learned“ mit seinem ungewöhnlichen Songaufbau gefallen. Ich denke, dass noch eine Menge Potential in der Band schlummert und sie uns noch mit einigen Sachen überraschen werden.

In December 2020 I had already reported for ‚metal-heads.de‘ about the young band REVERSE (Facebook) from Dorsten, after they had released their album „Deadlocked“ (Review). At that time I had described the sound as raw, rough and dirty. And fortunately, this has not changed.

„Hysteria“

is the name of the new small output with six songs. Epic progressive songs with overlong playing time are still not the thing of REVERSE. The longest song „Lesson Learned“ on the album goes 03:45 and the shortest song „The Devil Leaves The Sky“ makes it just to 02:14. The guys are just for the fast number to have, completely without foreplay or dessert. They like to play crispy and short. But hey, that wasn’t quite right about the foreplay, because the opener „Black Halo“ starts with a funny thing. REVERSE has retained a short verbal intermezzo in the final mix of singer Chris with the drummer Micha. Unfortunately, you can’t hear what the drummer complained about beforehand, but the singer reacts really cool to it.

The song „Black Halo“ itself stomps furiously. The riffs are again typically dirty and fat. Yes, and the singer sounds a little crazy and mad, whereby he comes along with a proper dirty portion of aggression.

There is craziness

Did I talk about „rage“ in the opener? Well….against the second one „In My World“ the opener is almost a good mood song. „In My World“ is a brutal banger that mows down everything with a dark mood and crazy speed attacks.

And poof, „Where Is The Crown“ sounds almost rocky melodic riff chords, sounds loosely upbeat, but still retains this mean aggressive attitude which is partly due to Chris‘ pithy voice. The song „Dismays“ lets the Punk roll and bludgeons without mercy.

„Lesseon Learned“ takes the tempo out. But that doesn’t matter, because here there are cool contrasts between quieter passages, which are dominated by a heavy bass, and riff-accentuated outbursts. And at the end there is finally a nice guitar solo, whose bright sounds shine through like rays of sunshine through the harsh dark riff storm. This is actually my favorite track.

Conclusion

REVERSE have released a really cool EP with „Hysteria“.The raw dirty production fits the music perfectly and captures it authentically. The sound has got even more power and they have really put emphasis on giving the sound even more facets. There are influences of Punk and Rock’n Roll or even from the dark corner of Metal. The crisp short songs bang through well. But I especially liked the longest song „Lesson Learned“ with its unusual structure. I think that there is still a lot of potential in the band and they will still surprise us with some things.

REVERSE (Facebook ) are from Dorsten, a small town at the edge of the so called „Ruhrpott“. By the way, it’s my former hometown where I grew up. Unfortunately, the band didn’t exist yet, otherwise I would have visited all the concerts there for sure. Because the guys deliver cool sound, which makes a lot of fun. On 11.12.2020 they have released their album „Deadlocked“, which rocks with 10 powerful songs.

Little boys no more

REVERSE have already gained plenty of experience and have already gained an international audience and fans. REVERSE originally formed in 2004 and rocked their youthful asses off in various youth centers in the „Ruhrpott“ area. In the meantime, they took a break, only to reunite in 2014 with new fresh energy and continue to live their dream. With Kurt Ebelhäuser ( producer BEATSTAKES, DONOTS, GUANO APES…) two EPs were produced („Build My Throne“, „Glasgow Kiss“). In March 2020 the album „Sonics“ was released, but unfortunately had no chance at all to promote the thing live because of fucking Corona. During the forced break they used this time to work on the further songs. REVERSE wanted to bring in some new fresh ideas without neglecting the typical raw REVERSE sound. And what came out of that on „Deadlocked“?

with punky influences promise a lot of fun. And this promise is also kept. This can be seen directly after the first beats and sounds of the opener „Bored“, which lets anything but boredom arise. With casual cool riffs it is started and the singer starts once with a loose entrance. In between it goes but then directly right to the point and the aggressive sound smashes directly into your face. The snotty smoky voice of singer Chris goes powerful to the point and fits perfectly to the earthy grunge rock sound of REVERSE. This is already a good „Omen“, which brings us to the next track, which also skilfully rocks back and forth between quieter, casual parts and raw in-your-face parts. Time for

„Goodbye“

is still a long way off. Because now it really starts. After the first two songs have already heated us up well, the post can really go off with „Goodbye“. The lively rocker with a good shot of punk in the blood goes off like hell. This is exactly the right song to totally freak out! Have fun with the video to the song…

Energy and Coolness

REVERSE show on the whole album. The songs are all short and crisp and straight to the point. Two minutes have to be enough sometimes. Nothing complicated, but simple excellent entertainment, which leads here and there with pleasure up to the total escalation, see for example „Suicidal Happiness“. Of course, these are also all damn good live burners that carry away the metalheads. You should always keep your throat moist and supple, because the choruses definitely invite you to bawl along. Remains as a conclusion that REVERSE are a damn cool troop. You literally burn for the fact that it finally starts again with live concerts and you can rage down the hut with REVERSE.

REVERSE (Facebook ) stammen aus Dorsten, einer kleinen Stadt am Rande des Ruhgebiets. Nebenbei bemerkt ist es meine ehemalige Heimatstadt, in der ich aufgewachsen bin. Da gab es die Band leider noch nicht, sonst hätte ich mit Sicherheit alle Konzerte von REVERSE dort besucht. Denn die Jungs liefern geile Mucke, die mega Laune macht. Am 11.12.2020 habe sie ihr Album „Deadlocked“ veröffentlicht, welches mit 10 Krachersongs zu begeistern weiß.

Grün hinter den Ohren

sind REVERSE keinesfalls mehr, sondern haben schon reichlich Erfahrungen gesammelt und haben sich bereits international Gehör und Fans verschafft. REVERSE haben sich ursprünglich 2004 gegründet und haben sich die jugendlichen Ärsche in diversen Jugendzentren des Ruhrpotts abgerockt. Zwischenzeitlich hatte man eine Pause eingelegt, um sich 2014 mit neuer frischer Energie wieder zusammenzufinden und ihren Traum weiterzuleben. Mit Kurt Ebelhäuser ( Produzent BEATSTAKES, DONOTS, GUANO APES…) wurden zwei EPs produziert („Build My Throne“, „Glasgow Kiss“). Im März 2020 wurde das Album „Sonics“ veröffentlicht. REVERSE hatten aber leider wegen fucking Corona überhaupt keine Chance das Ding live zu promoten. Man nutzte diese aufgezwungene Pause, um sich kreativ zu betätigen und weiteres Material zu komponieren. Dabei wollten REVERSE einige neue frische Ideen einbringen ohne den typischen rohen REVERSE-Sound zu vernachlässigen. Und was ist dabei auf „Deadlocked“ rumgekommen?

Grunge Rock

mit punkigen Einflüssen versprechen gute Laune. Und dieses Versprechen wird auch eingehalten. Dies kann man direkt nach den ersten Takten und Klängen von dem Opener „Bored“, der alles andere als Langeweile aufkommen lässt. Mit lässigen coolen Riffs wird gestartet und der Sänger fängt mal mit einem ebenso lockeren Einstieg an. Zwischendurch geht es aber dann doch direkt richtig zur Sache und es gibt fett in die Fresse. Die rotzige rauchige Stimme von Sänger Chris haut die Texte mit Schmackes raus und passt perfekt zum erdigen Grunge-Rock-Sound von REVERSE. Das ist schon mal ein gutes „Omen“, womit auch schon beim nächsten Track wären, der ebenfalls gekonnt zwischen ruhigeren lässigen Parts und rohen In-Die-Fresse-Parts hin- und herrockt. Zeit für

„Goodbye“

ist noch lange nicht. Denn jetzt geht es erst richtig los. Nachdem uns die ersten beiden Songs schon mal gut aufgeheizt haben, kann die Post mit „Goodbye“ richtig abgehen. Der flotte Rocker mit einer gehörigen Spritze Punk im Blut geht ab wie Schmidts Katze. Das ist genau der passende Song, um total auszuflippen! Viel Spaß mit dem Video zu dem Song…

Energie und Coolness

bis zum Abwinken versprühen REVERSE auf dem gesamten Album. Die Songs sind alle kurz und knackig und straight to the point. Da müssen auch mal zwei Minuten reichen. Nix kompliziertes, sondern einfache hervorragende Unterhaltung, die hier und da gerne bis zur totalen Eskalation führt, siehe z.B. „Suicidal Happiness“. Das sind natürlich auch alles verdammt gute Live-Burner, die das Publikum mitreißen. Man sollte immer schöne die Kehle feucht und geschmeidig halten, denn die Refrains laden auf jeden Fall zum mitgrölen ein. Bleibt als Fazit, dass REVERSE eine verdammt geile Truppe sind. Man brennt förmlich darauf, dass es endlich wieder mit Live-Konzerten losgeht und man mit REVERSE die Hütte abreißen kann.
