Virgin Steele sind wieder episch unterwegs

Wie gewohnt hat David DeFeis ein geradezu episches Thema gewählt, das tief in die Annalen der Menschheitsgeschichte eintaucht und gleichzeitig einen konkreten Bezug zur Gegenwart hat.

Es geht um das Konzept der Dualität, in der etwas gleichzeitig das eine aber auch das Gegenteil ist. Es hat unverkennbar mit Dionysos zu tun hat und, wie der Titel bereits verrät, seiner Passion, seinem Leiden und seiner Ankunft in Theben, um die Verleumdung seiner Mutter zu rächen und den König von Theben dafür zu bestrafen, dass er dort seine Anbetung verweigert hatte. Davon abgesehen passiert aber noch viel mehr.

 In ‚The Passion Of Dionysus‘ erzählt DeFeis vom epischen Kampf zwischen den Zwillingskräften von Kontrolle/Zurückhaltung und Freiheit/Befreiung, und widmet sich der Frage, ob es in der Gesellschaft Platz für das Irrationale, das Wilde gibt oder nicht. David DeFeis ist nicht nur ein genialer Komponist und Musiker, sondern sieht sich als Visionär, der mit seiner Band das perfekte Medium besitzt, um sich menschlich und kulturell weiterzuentwickeln.

Die US Metal Legende VIRGIN STEELE veröffentlicht mit „Seven Devils Moonshine“ ein spezielles 5CD Boxset zum 35jährigen Jubiläum. Gründer und Mastermind David DeFeis erklärt das komplette Boxset:

Hallo, Salute und ein herzliches Willkommen allen ewigtreuen Metal-Hörern im Königreich der Musik und im Hoheitsgebiet des geflügelten Wortes! Ich habe den Stift in die Hand genommen, um euch darüber zu informieren, was wir in den zurückliegenden Jahren gemacht haben und worum es sich bei diesem Box-Set handelt, das ihr gerade in den Händen haltet. Es ist ein Blick zurück, wie wir bis zu diesem Punkt gekommen sind, und vielleicht auch eine kleine Vorausschau, was noch alles vor uns liegen könnte.

Wiederveröffentlichung mit jeder Menge Bonusmaterial

Wie einige von euch vermutlich bereits wissen haben wir in den vergangenen Jahren den gesamten Back-Katalog von VIRGIN STEELE Stück für Stück wiederveröffentlicht und dabei den Scheiben riesige Mengen an Bonusmaterial hinzugefügt. Die beiden letzten Werke dieser Wiederveröffentlichungskampagne sind nun THE BOOK OF BURNING und HYMNS TO VICTORY. Beiden Alben wurden damals zeitgleich veröffentlicht. Deshalb war unsere Überlegung, es jetzt genauso zu handhaben. Diesmal jedoch inklusive eines brandneuen Albums in einer Art Box-Set.

3 Brandneue CD’s als Bonus

Nun, während der Planung und Aufnahmen für dieses Vorhaben hatten wir schnell weitaus mehr Material angesammelt als auf eine CD passt, daher sagten wir uns: „Prima! Veröffentlichen wir zusammen mit den letzten beiden Reissues doch einfach zwei weitere CDs randvoll mit neuem Material“ Allerdings: Unmittelbar nach dieser Entscheidung konnten wir sogar noch viel mehr neues Material als geplant aufnehmen, sodass wir nun, liebe Freunde, zusätzlich zu den beiden Wiederveröffentlichungen (die – nebenbei bemerkt – jeweils einen Bonustrack beinhalten) drei brandneue VIRGIN STEELE-CDs innerhalb dieses besonderen Box-Sets präsentieren können.

Neue Songs und neu arrangierte Coverversionen

Ich möchte noch einmal explizit betonen, dass in diesem Box-Set drei (!) brandneue (!!) Alben enthalten sind, und nicht etwa eine Ansammlung alter Bonustracks, die seit Jahren bei uns in der Schublade lagen. Die drei neuen CDs beinhalten sowohl brandaktuelle eigene Songs, die in den zurückliegenden Monaten komponiert und aufgenommen wurden, dazu brandneu arrangierte Covernummern von Songs, die wir lieben und unserer Meinung nach perfekt zum Stil von VIRGIN STEELE passen, sowie neue Aufnahmen von VIRGIN STEELE-Klassikern, die entweder in einer speziellen Orchesterversion aufgenommen oder hinsichtlich der Instrumentierung auf ihre wesentlichen Bestandteile gekürzt wurden, um sie von einer anderen Seite zu zeigen.

Keine Archivware

Noch einmal, auch wenn ich Gefahr laufe mich zu wiederholen: Es gibt kein einziges Stück, das in irgendeiner Gruft auf seine Veröffentlichung gewartet hat. Hier findet man ausschließlich neue Aufnahmen, die extra für dieses spezielle Box-Set komplettiert wurden. Ich kann mir nicht vorstellen, dass irgendjemand vor uns so etwas schon einmal gemacht hat. Für uns fühlte es sich jedoch wie ein zwingend notwendiger Schritt an, zumal es perfekt zu dem passt, wo wir uns momentan befinden.

Okay Freunde, mit einem Glas in der Hand, wie es sich für den Besitzer eines Weinbergs gehört, werde ich euer Wegweiser durch diese Unterwelt sein und einiges über den Geist und den Geschmack jeder dieser fünf CDs enthüllen, die sich innerhalb eines epischen Box-Sets namens SEVEN DEVILS MOONSHINE befinden.“

SPV / Steamhammer ist stolz dieses Boxset am 23. November 2018 incl. 5 CDs (insgesamt 88 Songs), wobei 3 CDs komplett neues Material und neue Versionen beinhalten, zu veröffentlichen. Jack Starr im Interview

Hi, I’m Uwe from metal-heads.de (Mh). I’m glad that you take time to answer me a few questions.

Mh: Your new album “Stand Your Ground” will be released in a few days. I think it has the breath of the golden 80´s Power Metal-Sound. Is this right? And do you think there’s still a market for that kind of music?

Jack Starr (JS): Hi Uwe and a big hello to the metalheads reading this. You are right this is stylistically an 80’s metal album that happens to be released in 2017 but the truth is, I think that the engineering by Kevin Burnes and the production of Bart Gabriel is sonically much more complex and interesting than most of the heavy metal music from the 80’s including my own work from that time period. As far as whether there is a market for this kind of music? My answer is YES!

This is a style of music that will always remain alive. When I started the band Virgin Steele in 1981 I was one of the creators of what we now call Power Metal and I believe there will always be fans for this intense and melodic style of metal and I am proud to continue to make this music that I love and gratified that are many people who still want to hear it.

Musikeinflüsse

Mh: I’m a child of the 80’s and I absolutely like your new album very much. One of my favorites is the main title “Stand Your Ground” which is with over 10 minutes also the longest song of the album.  It has so much variety and reminds me of the long tracks from Iron Maiden. Can you live with this comparison?

JS: Yes I think it is a fair comparison but I am not influenced by Iron Maiden though I do think they are a great band, what is important to understand is that if there are any similar aspects in the music it is because I have been influenced by some of the same music that also influenced them, so I can say that we have this in common.

On the song that you mention the title track entitled „Stand Your Ground“, this song is quite long and has many different musical movements and time signatures and this is something that Iron Maiden also does but before Iron Maiden did this, the band Deep Purple was creating epic songs with different parts and time signatures in the same song and before Deep Purple there was a band called The Vanilla Fudge who were a big influence on Deep Purple who also recorded epic songs. So the point I am making is that everyone in music is standing on the shoulders of those that came before.

Europatour in Aussicht?

Mh: A lot of the songs seem to be written for a stage performance. Is there a chance that we can see you live on stage with Jack Starr’s Burning Starr here in Europe and especially in Germany soon?

JS: This is my dream to come back to Europe with Burning Starr and play these songs alongside our classic songs from the past albums as well and yes you are right, often when I am writing a song by myself or with Ned Meloni we try to envision the crowd at a concert and how they would react to different parts of the song and we will in some of the songs create parts that we know that an audience would want to sing along with as they did on our tour when the audience would sing along to the songs we played. For me the sound of an audience singing along to one of our songs is one of my favorite parts of playing a concert.

Das Line-Up

Mh: In the past your band line-up has changed very often. So are you satisfied with the status quo? Or can you even say that the recent line-up is one of the best you ever had?

JS: This lineup is a great, we have one of the best drummers in rock Rhino who was formerly in Manowar, we have one of the best singers in rock Todd Micheal Hall who also sings for Riot, we have one of the best bass players in rock Ned Meloni who played in bands with Joe Lynn Turner and Steve Whitman from Kix and on guitar some guy named Jack Starr who keeps playing better and better lol.

Musik-Business früher und heute

Mh: You can look back on a very long career in metal music. What do you think is the biggest difference between the business when you started playing music and these days?

JS: The biggest difference is that there are many more bands now and much more product because it has become easier for bands to make and produce albums but before this, the record companies decided who was good enough to make an album and so there was a certain standard that had to be met, for instance the first time I was on record was when the American guitar magazine Guitar Player put together a compilation album looking for the best unknown guitar players in the US and they choose me. I was contacted by the magazine and they told me that I had been picked to appear on the album and this opened the door for my band Virgin Steele to be signed by a record Label.

Verhältnis zu David De Feis

Mh: You became famous by playing with Virgin Steele. Do you have still contact with the bandleader David De Feis?

JS: No sadly I don’t and it’s not my decision. I think so much time has gone by that it’s time to forget all this and have a drink together. Also most of the time I can not be angry at some one for more than an hour. So to be angry at someone for more than 40 years is not something I can do and if Dave reads this, than I would say to him contact me and let’s talk and let’s remember all the good things we did and the great music we created and the many fans thru out the world that we made happy because this is what is really important.

Immer noch ein Meister an der Gitarre

Mh: Back to the presence:  on the new album your guitar play is still so impressive. What is your secret to remain in shape?

JS: Thanks for the compliment. I play everyday and like to perform as often as I can and I think that for a guitar player it is important to keep playing and this way you can grow as a player and perfect your art. I also feel that the more I play the more natural it feels and can be able to not think of the specific notes but instead just let the music flow from me in a more natural and organic way and lastly I really think that in the world of electric guitar playing. One of the most important things is having a good vibrato and the more you play, the better and more focused your vibrato will get.

For me if a guitar player does not have good vibrato I will not enjoy listening to that Player. Clapton, Brian May, Tony Iommi, Blackmore, BB King, Gary Moore, David Gilmore all have great vibrato. I have been working on my vibrato since I first started to play guitar. And I am just starting to be happy with it lately.

Zukunftspläne

Mh: A last question: what are your plans for the near future?

JS: My plans for the near future are to make this album as well publicized and promoted as possible and than go to Europe and do concerts. I am happy that the last Album „Land of the Dead“ did very well for us and I am sure this one will continue to help us grow our audience. So in closing I hope to see many of you on tour and hope we can raise a glass or two.

Nunmehr ist „The House Of Atreus“ an der Reihe und die ursprünglich (in den Jahren 1999 und 2000) veröffentlichten Acts 1 & 2 sowie die EP Magick Fire Musik (die einen Vorgeschmack auf Act 2 darstellte) wurden in einem fetten Digi-Pack zusammengefasst, das zu einem sehr attraktivem Preis erhältlich ist.

Der Maestro von Virgin Steele, David De Feis himself, äußert sich zur Wiederveröffentlichung wie folgt:

THE HOUSE OF ATREUS was a major milestone release for us and we are excited to have the opportunity to present it to the public once again. In addition to its appearance as a full length album, this Work was also presented live onstage as a fully realized Theatrical Production by the Landestheatre Schwaben, and the tour we completed for it was one of our longest and most ambitious tours ever. Those who might have missed either the album, the tour or the Theatrical performance, can now once again experience this Work in all its blood-drenched glory and murderous majesty once again…“

Ein monumentales Meisterwerk

„The House Of Atreus“ basiert auf der Metal-Oper „Klytaimnestra – Fluch der Atriden“, die in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Landestheater Schwaben in Memmingen von David De Feis geschrieben und von 1999 bis 2001 in Europa aufgeführt wurde. Die Handlung der Geschichte komplett wieder zu geben, würde hier den Namen sprengen. Es ist ein Stück aus der griechischen Mythologie und erzählt die Legende von Agamemnon, dem Anführer der griechischen Armee beim Untergang von Troja, seiner Frau Klytemnestra und Ihrem Liebhaber Agisthos. Eine Legende voller Lügen, Intrigen, Lust, Leidenschaft und Mord, die auch in der heutigen Zeit spielen könnte.

Auf den Alben übernimmt David De Feis sämtliche Gesangsparts. Er war zur Zeit der Erstveröffentlichung des Werkes stimmlich in absoluter Höchstform und singt derart variabel, dass man meinen könnte, eine ganze Reihe von Sängern sei hier am Werk gewesen. Musikalisch unterstützt wurde er auf den Alben von Ausnahmedrummer Frank Gilchrist und seinem kongenialen Partner und Gitarristen Edward Pursino.  Neben zahlreichen fantastischen Songs sind auf den Alben sehr viele Instrumentalpassagen enthalten. De Feis zeichnet sich dabei auch für sämtliche Keyboards und das Piano verantwortlich. Allein die beiden Alben (ohne die EP) kommen auf eine Spielzeit von über 160 Minuten. „The House Of Atreus“ ist ganz sicher nichts, um es mal eben nebenbei zu hören. Vielmehr stellt es ein monumentales Meisterwerk dar, für dass man sich ganz viel Zeit nehmen und es am besten mit Kopfhörern ungestört genießen sollte. Um sich einen musikalischen Eindruck zu verschaffen, sind vielleicht die Songs „Kingdom Of The Fearless“, „Through The Ring Of Fire“ und „Wings Of Vengeance“ geeignet. Letztendlich kann man das Werk jedoch nur als Ganzes richtig aufnehmen, da sich zum einen einige musikalische Passagen mehrfach wiederfinden und wir es zum anderen – und das ist der wesentliche Punkt – hier wirklich mit einer echten Metal-Oper zu tun haben und eben nicht mit einer „Sogenannten“, die im Grunde doch nur eine Ansammlung von Songs mit einheitlichem Zusammenhang darstellt.

Kaufempfehlung?

Das die von SPV/Steamhammer zusammengestellte Neuauflage ihr Geld wert ist, steht angesichts der Spielzeit und des schönen Digi-Packs völlig außer Frage. Gleichwohl kann keine generelle Kaufempfehlung ausgesprochen werden. Für diejenigen, die die Alben und EP schon im Besitz haben, dürfte sich eine Anschaffung erübrigen, da nichts wirklich Neues geboten wird. Als Einstieg in die Welt von Virgin Steele ist das Werk meines Erachtens zu komplex. Hier dürfte die (Neuauflage) von „Invictus“ (ein grandioses und zugleich „normales“ Album) die bessere Wahl sein. Wer aber (hierdurch) Geschmack an der Musik von Virgin Steele gefunden hat, dem sei „The House Of Atreus Act 1 & 2“ wärmstens ans Herz gelegt.
