Eine talentierter Gitarrist geht seinen Weg

Über Henrik Schaller (Facebook) als junges Gitarrentalent haben wir bei ‚metal-heads.de‘ bereits einige Male berichtet. Schon bevor er als Gitarrist bei der Band M.I.GOD. (Facebook) eingestiegen ist, hat er sich seiner Passion Musik verschrieben. Er hat stetig an seinen Fertigkeiten gearbeitet und schreckte auch vor großen Herausforderungen nicht zurück. So hat er früh begonnen eigene Songs zu schreiben.

Nachdem die Kompositionen irgendwann seinen eigenen Ansprüchen genügten, hat er nun im letzten Jahr Nägel mit Köpfe gemacht und die professionelle Umsetzung seiner eigenen Kompositionen in Angriff genommen. So ein Projekt ist kein Zuckerschlecken und es gibt viele Dinge zu beachten und umzusetzen. Dabei wurde von den Musikerkollegen seiner Hauptband M.I.GOD. tatkräftig unterstützt, was das ganze Drumherum bei so einer Produktion angeht. Außerdem konnte Henrik sehr bekannte Gastmusiker für seinen Song gewinnen.

Die Debütsingle „Set The World Alight“

ist nach langer Zeit der Entwicklung endlich vollendet und ab sofort auf allen Plattformen zu hören. Für seine erste Single konnte Henrik die Musiker Joseph Michael (Sänger WITHERFALL & SANCTUARY) und Chris Boderick (Gitarrist ACT OF DEFIANCE, Ex-MEGADETH) gewinnen. Tja, da kann man nur staunen!

Joseph schrieb die Lyrics und veredelt diesen Song mit seiner unverwechselbaren Stimme. Herausgekommen ist ein dystopischer Thrill, der vom Thema aktueller denn je ist. Ein epischer düsterer Track, der durch die theatralische Stimme von Joseph epische Ausmaße annimmt. Und der Chorus ist wirklich verdammt genial geworden. Auch dieser langgezogene Scream in Minute 02:18 macht Gänsehaut.

Der Song hat eine beachtliche Spielzeit von über acht Minuten und das musikalische Grundthema besteht eigentlich nur aus zwei Riffs. Trotzdem vermag Henrik das Grundthema mit seinen versatilen Gitarrenleads zu befeuern. Das hört sich schon geil an. Das Solo von Chris Broderick setzt dem Ganzen natürlich noch die Krone auf und sticht besonders hervor. Langeweile kommt also nicht auf. So muss man Henrik im Ergebnis attestieren, dass er mit seiner Debütsingle ein Wahnsinnsbrett abgeliefert hat.

Interview mit Henrik

MH: Hallo Henrik! So ein ganz Unbekannter bist Du ja nun nicht mehr. Bei ‚metal-heads.de‘ warst Du schon Teil einer eigenen Serie, die leider aufgrund von COVID 19 etwas ins Stocken geriet. Doch wie viele andere Künstler hast Du die Zeit der zwangsweisen Pausierung bzgl. der Live-Konzerte für kreative Entfaltung genutzt. Wer mehr über dich als Person erfahren will, der sollte sich die folgenden Artikel durchlesen. (Teil-1- / Teil-2- )

Die Erfahrung M.I.GOD.

MH: Als Gitarrist bei M.I.GOD. hast Du es schon mit anspruchsvoller Gitarrenarbeit zu tun. War es eine Herausforderung für Dich bei Deinem Einstieg dort? Konntest Du Deine Skills dort gut weiterentwickeln?

Henrik: Ich hatte zu dem Zeitpunkt, als ich dort eingestiegen bin, bereits Erfahrungen mit einer 7-String Gitarre und anspruchsvollerem Gitarrenspiel gehabt habe, so wie man es beispielsweise bei NEVERMORE, MEGADETH, DREAM THEATRE hört. So bin ich bei M.I.GOD. relativ gut reingekommen, obwohl ich sagen muss, dass manche Sachen schon sehr tricky waren. Dies betraf vor allem die rhythmische Seite, die ich vorher noch nie so gespielt habe. So konnte ich durch M.I.GOD. mein Rhythmusspiel schon arg verbessern und mich weiterentwickeln.

MH:  Jetzt wollen wir aber über Dein Soloprojekt reden. Wie kam es dazu? Wo war die Initialzündung?

Henrik: Seitdem ich an der Gitarre einigermaßen gut spielen konnte, habe ich an Songs geschrieben. Meine ersten Aufnahmen entstanden im Jahr 2013. Es gab zwischendurch immer wieder Phasen, wo ich mich ein wenig mehr ausprobiert habe. So richtig ernst ging es dann los im Dezember 2020. Da hatte ich einen Song geschrieben. Dies war nicht meine jetzige Single, aber ich fand ihn so gut, dass ich mir dachte darauf aufbauen zu können. Das war auch der erste Song, bei dem ich die Drums selber programmiert habe. Vorher hatte ich auf vorgefertigte Samples zurückgegriffen. Bei dem Song habe ich mich an einem neuen Programm ausprobiert und so hörte sich das Ergebnis gleich um ein vielfaches besser an. So hat es begonnen!

Ich war etwas naiv

MH: So einen Traum haben bestimmt viele junge Musiker. Wie bist Du an die Sache herangegangen? Wo lagen die Schwierigkeiten bei der Umsetzung?

Henrik: Ich bin ehrlich gesagt etwas blauäugig an die Sache herangegangen. Ich bin davon ausgegangen, dass ich die Songs selber aufnehmen könnte. Hier und dort was ‚drüberlegen‘ und an ein paar Regelern drehen und schon klingt es fast so wie aus einem Profistudio. Wie ich feststellen musste, war ich in der Hinsicht ein wenig naiv. Eigentlich hatte ich überhaupt keine Ahnung wie so eine Produktion überhaupt abläuft und was man dafür so benötigt.

Ich bin dann irgendwann an Michael Sopolidis herangetreten. Er hat mir angeboten, dass er mir das Schlagzeug programmieren würde und dann war er dankenswerterweise so lieb mich in den Produktionsprozess einzubeziehen, so dass ich diesbezüglich auch was lernen konnte.

The Walking Dead

MH: Wann hast Du begonnen den aktuellen Song „Set The World Alight“ zu schreiben?

Henrik: Das ist der einzige Song, der aus der früheren Ära stammt, Sommer 2019. Er basiert auf dem THE WALKING DEAD Intro-Theme. Ich hatte umgehend Vorstellungen, wie man aus diesem Theme eine coole Sache machen könnte ohne es blind zu kopieren. Das war der musikalische Ursprung dahinter.

MH: Worum geht es in Deinem Song?

Henrik: Das müsstest Du eigentlich Joseph fragen, denn er hat die Lyrics zu dem Song geschrieben. In den Texten geht es um das Ende der Welt. Die Texte bieten natürlich Interpretationsmöglichkeiten. Sehr mysteriös und kurios ist der Umstand, dass die Lyrics schon im letzten Sommer fertig gewesen sind und wenn man sich die aktuelle weltpolitische Situation so anschaut, dann spiegeln die Texte diese erschreckend passend wider.

MH: Warum hast Du gerade diese Musiker ausgewählt und was schätzt Du an diesen besonders?

Henrik: Ich habe natürlich Musiker ausgewählt, die ich zu meinen Idolen zähle und die mich in meiner musikalischen Entwicklung beeinflusst haben. Für diesen Song sind es eben Joseph und Chris Broderick geworden. Für meine anderen Songs wird es noch Namen anderer hochkarätiger bekannter Bands geben, aber darüber möchte ich hier noch nicht allzu viel verraten. Aber diese werden sich z.B. aus Bands wie ARCH ENEMY, CRADLE OF FILTH, MEGADETH, NEVERMORE rekrutieren.

Ich muss dazu sagen, dass diese Musiker überhaupt keine Starallüren gezeigt haben und haben sich ernsthaft mit meinem Anliegen auseinandergesetzt. Ich bin ein junger Musiker, aber es war immer ein Diskurs auf Augenhöhe und die Gastmusiker haben nicht irgendwas hingerotzt, sondern haben sich mit den Songs intensiv beschäftigt und ihr Bestes gegeben. Man weiß nie, was einen erwartet, wenn man an solche Musiker herantritt. Von daher weiß ich die Art und Weise der Zusammenarbeit unheimlich zu schätzen.

Die Geburt eines Songs

MH: Was ist das für ein Gefühl endlich die Frucht seiner Arbeit im finalen Mix zu hören, der dann zur Veröffentlichung ansteht?

Henrik: Das ist einfach ein Megagefühl! Bin quasi ausgeflippt vor Freude. Ich weiß noch, als die Vocals von Joseph kamen und Michael es abgemischt hatte. Ich bin mit dem Song eine Stunde spazieren gegangen und habe mir den Song immer wieder und wieder angehört. Es war wirklich ein unbeschreiblich schönes Gefühl.

Zukunftspläne

MH: Natürlich stellt sich die Frage, wie es mit Deinem Soloprojekt weitergeht? Arbeitest Du schon an weiteren Songs? Womöglich ein Album?

Henrik: Die zukünftigen Songs sind alle bereits geplant und in Arbeit. Ich möchte aber jedem Song seinen Raum und die Zeit geben, um ihn wirken zu lassen. Vor allem im Hinblick auf die hochkarätigen Gastmusiker möchte ich vermeiden, dass irgendwas untergeht, wenn ich zu viele Songs auf einmal oder kurz hintereinander rausbringe. Die Arbeit der Gastmusiker soll gewürdigt werden, indem man sich intensiv mit den Songs auseinandersetzt.

Am Ende dieser Songetappe könnte es natürlich passieren, dass ich eine EP oder ein Album rausbringen werden.

Stärken und Schwächen-Eine Selbsteinschätzung

MH: Du bringst als junger Mann schon sehr beachtliche Fähigkeiten beim Gitarrenspiel mit. Wo liegen Deine Stärken und Deine Schwächen? Was zeichnet für Dich einen hervorragenden Gitarristen aus? Welchem/n Gitarristen eiferst Du nach?

Henrik: Meine Stärken liegen vor allem darin, dass ich mir Songs sehr schnell aneignen kann. Als ich damals bei M.I.GOD. eingestiegen bin, habe ich mir die zehn Songs von „Specters On Parade“ innerhalb von fünf Tagen rausgehört und angeeignet. Und ne Woche später stand ich mit der Band auf der Bühne.

Eine meiner Schwächen ist das „Tappen“, dieses Fingerspiel. Damit habe ich die meisten Schwierigkeiten. Und wenn man sich dann einen Gitarristen wie Chris Broderick anhört mit seinem Acht-Finger-Tapping, dann muss ich sagen: Da bin ich raus! Das kann ich auf Tod und Teufel nicht.

Dann gibt es manche HAKEN oder DREAM THEATRE Sachen, die sehr progressiv werden und ich davor sitze und denke: What the fuck! Bei SYMPHONY X gibt es auch solche Sachen, wo mir einfach die Kinnlade runterfällt.

Einen sehr guten Gitarristen

zeichnet vor allem aus, wenn er seinen eigenen Stil besitzt. Es ist kein Geheimnis, dass ich ein Riesenfan von NEVERMORE und Jeff Loomis bin. Ihm eifere ich am meisten nach, weil ich sein Gitarrenspiel als eines der besten empfinde. Natürlich wird man raushören, dass ich durch ihn inspiriert werde, aber meine Songs werden jetzt nicht wie NEVERMORE klingen. Ich möchte meinen eigenen Sound rüberbringen. Das halte ich für sehr wichtig!

Meine Art Musik zu machen ist organisch. Man sollte es vor allem nicht zu verbissen sehen und den Spaß daran nicht verlieren. Ich habe z.B. von Musiktheorie und Notenlesen überhaupt keine Ahnung, nicht den blassesten Schimmer. Aber ich kann trotzdem das, was ich kann. Am Ende des Tages bleibt es aber ein Hobby, das Spaß machen soll. 

MH: Kommen wir zum Abschluß noch einmal auf M.I.GOD. zurück. Ihr habt vor kurzem ein tolles Video zu dem Song „Chances“ rausgebracht. Kannst Du uns etwas darüber erzählen?

Henrik: Wir hatten Ende 2020 die Idee, dass wir zu Chances noch ein Lyrikvideo zu machen. Max hat angefangen geeignetes Bildmaterial zu sammeln. Aber wir wollten dann doch noch mehr machen und wir als Band sollten Teil des Videos werden. Da Corona aber kein Ende nahm, wurde das nach hinten verschoben. Und demnächst wird es noch eine neue Single geben, an der wir gearbeitet haben. Seid gespannt!

A talented guitarist goes his way

We have already reported about Henrik Schaller (Facebook) as a young guitar talent at ‚metal-heads.de‘ a few times. Even before he joined the band M.I.GOD. (Facebook), he has dedicated himself to his passion music. He has constantly worked on his skills and did not shy away from big challenges. So he started writing his own songs early on.

After the compositions at some point satisfied his own demands, he has decided to tackle the professional implementation of his own compositions. Such a project is no walk in the park and there are many things to consider and implement. Henrik was actively supported by the musicians of his main band M.I.GOD. regarding all the details of such a production. In addition, Henrik was able to win very well-known guest musicians for his song.

The debut single „Set The World Alight“

is finally completed after a long time of development and can now be heard on all platforms. For his first single Henrik could win the musicians Joseph Michael (singer WITHERFALL & SANCTUARY) and Chris Boderick (guitarist ACT OF DEFIANCE, ex-MEGADETH). Well, one can only be amazed!

Joseph wrote the lyrics and refines this song with his unmistakable voice. The result is a dystopian thrill, which is more topical than ever. It is an epic gloomy track that takes on epic proportions through the theatrical voice of Joseph. And the chorus has become really damn brilliant. Also this long-drawn Scream in minute 02:18 makes goose bumps.

The song has a considerable playing time of over eight minutes and the basic musical theme actually consists of only two riffs. Nevertheless, Henrik is able to fuel the basic theme with his versatile guitar leads. This already sounds awesome. The solo of Chris Broderick of course puts the crown on the whole thing and stands out especially. Boredom does not arise. So you have to attest Henrik in the result that he has delivered a damn good debut single.

Interview with Henrik

M.I.GOD.

MH: As a guitarist in M.I.GOD. you already have to deal with demanding guitar work. Was it a challenge for you when you started there? Were you able to develop your skills well there?

Henrik: At the time I joined, I had already had experience with a 7-string guitar and more demanding guitar playing, as you hear it for example with NEVERMORE, MEGADETH, DREAM THEATRE. So I got into M.I.GOD. relatively well, although I must say that some things were already very tricky. This was especially the rhythmic side, which I had never played like that before. So through M.I.GOD. I was able to improve my rhythm playing a lot and develop myself further.

MH:  But now let’s talk about your solo project. How did it come about? Where was the initial spark?

Henrik: Since I could play the guitar reasonably well, I have been writing songs. My first recordings were made in 2013, and there were phases in between where I tried out a little more. Things got really serious in December 2020, when I had written a song. This was not my current single, but I found it so good that I thought I could build on it. This was also the first song where I programmed the drums myself. Before that, I had been using pre-made samples. With this song I tried a new program and the result sounded much better. That’s how it started!

I was a little naive

MH: I’m sure many young musicians have a dream like that. How did you approach this? Where were the difficulties in the implementation?

Henrik: To be honest, I approached the matter a bit naively. I assumed that I could record the songs myself. Here and there ‚overlay‘ something and turn a few knobs and it sounds almost like from a professional studio. As I had to realize, I was a bit naive in that respect. Actually, I had no idea how such a production is done and what you need for it.

At some point I approached Michael Sopolidis. He offered to program the drums for me and then he was kind enough to involve me in the production process so that I could learn something about it. I am very grateful for that!

The Walking Dead

MH: When did you start writing the current song „Set The World Alight“?

Henrik: This is the only song from the earlier era, Summer 2019, based on THE WALKING DEAD intro theme. I immediately had ideas about how to make a cool thing out of that theme without blindly copying it. That was the musical origin behind it.

MH: What is your song about?

Henrik: You should really ask Joseph, because he wrote the lyrics to the song. The lyrics are about the end of the world. Of course, the lyrics offer possibilities of interpretation. Very mysterious and curious is the fact that the lyrics were already finished last summer and if you look at the current world political situation, then the lyrics reflect this frighteningly appropriate.

MH: Why did you choose these musicians in particular and what do you appreciate about them?

Henrik: Of course, I chose musicians who I count among my idols and who have influenced me in my musical development. For this song it became Joseph and Chris Broderick. For my other songs there will be names of other top-class well-known bands, but I don’t want to reveal too much about that here yet. But these will be recruited from bands like ARCH ENEMY, CRADLE OF FILTH, MEGADETH, NEVERMORE.

I have to say that these musicians have shown no airs and graces at all and have seriously addressed my concerns. I’m a young musician, but it was always a friendly discourse with mutual respect. And the guest musicians didn’t just blurt something out, but dealt with the songs intensively and gave their best. You never know what to expect when you approach musicians like that. That’s why I really appreciate the way they worked together.

The birth of a song

MH: How does it feel to finally hear the fruit of your labor in the final mix, which is then ready for release?

Henrik: This is in fact a mega feeling! I’m kind of freaking out with joy. I remember when the vocals came from Joseph and Michael mixed it. I walked around with the song for an hour and listened to it over and over again. It was really an indescribably beautiful feeling.

Future plans

MH: Of course the question arises, how it goes on with your solo project? Are you already working on more songs? Possibly an album?

Henrik: The future songs are all already planned and in progress. But I want to give each song its space and the time to let it work. Especially with regard to the top-class guest musicians, I want to avoid that anything gets lost if I release too many songs at once or in quick succession. The work of the guest musicians should be appreciated by intensively dealing with the songs.

At the end of all these releases, of course, it could happen that I will put out an EP or an album.

Strengths & weaknesses-A self-assessment

MH: As a young man, you already bring very considerable guitar playing skills to the table. What are your strengths and weaknesses? What characterizes an excellent guitarist for you?

Henrik: My strengths lie mainly in the fact that I can learn songs very quickly. When I joined M.I.GOD., I learned the ten songs of „Specters On Parade“ within five days. And a week later I was on stage with the band.

One of my weaknesses is „tapping“, this finger play. I have the most difficulties with that. And when you listen to a guitarist like Chris Broderick with his eight-finger tapping, then I have to say: I’m out of there! I can’t do that for the life of me at the moment.

Then there are some HAKEN or DREAM THEATRE things that become very progressive and I sit in front of it and think: What the fuck! With SYMPHONY X there are also such things where my jaw just drops.

A very good guitarist

stands out above all when he has his own style. It’s no secret that I’m a huge fan of NEVERMORE and Jeff Loomis. He’s the one I emulate the most because I feel his guitar playing is one of the best. Of course you will hear that I am inspired by him, but my songs will not sound like NEVERMORE now. I want to bring my own sound across. I think that’s very important!

My way of making music is organic. Above all, one should not see it too doggedly and not lose the fun in it. For example, I have no idea at all about music theory and reading music, not the faintest clue. But I can still do what I know how to do. At the end of the day, however, it remains a hobby that should be fun. 

MH: Let’s come back to M.I.GOD. at the end. You recently released a great video for the song „Chances“. Can you tell us something about it?

Henrik: At the end of 2020 we had the idea to make a lyric video for Chances. Max started to collect suitable footage. But then we wanted to do more and we as a band should be part of the video. But since Corona didn’t take an end, that was postponed. And soon there will be a new single we have been working on. Be curious!

Klassisches Songwriting

MH: Mit „Curse Of Autumn“ habt Ihr meiner Meinung nach Euer bisher vielfältigstes Werk geschaffen. Es erreicht eine andere Art von emotionaler Tiefe. Das vorherige Album „Prelude To Sorrow“ war in Düsternis gehüllt. Das neue Album trägt mehr Aggression und Wut in sich („The Last Scar“ und „The Other Side Of Fear“), aber auch zärtlichere, emotional tragische Momente („The River“, „Long Time“) und Songs, die leicht ins Theatralische gehen (siehe „Tempest“, „…All They Blew Away“). Es gibt sogar verrückte Momente in den Songs („Another Face“, „The Other Side Of Fear“).

Wie ist „Curse Of Autumn“ entstanden und was sind die Ideen und Absichten dahinter?

Jake Dreyer: Das Schreiben für „Curse of Autumn“ begann, wie alle WITHERFALL-Platten begonnen haben: mit Unmengen von Rotwein, einer akustischen Gitarre, Stift und Papier. Unser Songwriting zwischen Joseph und mir ist sehr organisch und erinnert an die Art und Weise, wie Bands in den 70ern geschrieben haben. Alles, was wir tun, ist ganz natürlich. Dabei lieben wir alle verschiedenen Musikstile und unsere Einflüsse reichen von der Klassik bis zum Pop der 80er Jahre und alles dazwischen.

Ich denke, dass es funktioniert, wenn wir nicht über den Prozess nachdenken und einfach schreiben. Das geht zurück auf unser ursprüngliches Konzept einer Band, die beim Songwriting keine Grenzen kennt; wie bei QUEEN. Dieses Album ist das abwechslungsreichste, es hat unsere kürzesten Songs und unsere 15-minütige Prog-Suite. Nichts davon war geplant, es ist einfach passiert.

Joseph Michael: Genau! Zum einen ging es in „A Prelude to Sorrow“ um Adam. Da ging es um eine Sache. Bei dieser Platte geht es um viele Dinge, die durch einen roten Faden miteinander verbunden sind. Was die Vielfalt des Materials angeht, denke ich nicht, dass es sich von anderen Platten, die wir gemacht haben, unterscheidet.

Aus negativ mach positiv

MH: Wie schon in der ersten Frage angedeutet, ist „Curse Of Autumn“ ein Album der Kontraste. Dies spiegelt sich auch in den Videos wider, wenn man z.B. die Videos zu „As I Lie Awake“ und „The Other Side Of Fear“ mit dem Video zum Song „The River“ miteinander vergleicht. Mehr Kontrast ist nicht möglich.

Wie passt ein so tragisch-emotionaler Song wie „The River“, der den Verlust eines geliebten Menschen thematisiert, in den Kontext all der Wut und Verbitterung?

Joseph Michael: Ich denke, alle Wut wird durch Ressentiments und das Gefühl von Verlust oder Ungerechtigkeit ausgelöst. Ein weiteres Thema auf diesem Album ist die persönliche Ermächtigung. Diese potenziell negativen Erfahrungen zu nehmen und sie nicht nur zu überwinden, sondern positive Dinge daraus zu schaffen, wie zum Beispiel die Songs selbst.

Ein Fluch auf WITHERFALL?

MH: „The River“ ist dem verstorbenen Vater von Joseph gewidmet. Das letzte Album „Prelude To Sorrow“ dreht sich um den Tod von Adam Saga, der bei Ihnen Schlagzeuger war und leider nach einer schweren Krankheit verstorben ist.

Es scheint, dass Ihr mit dem Thema Tod musikalisch offensiv umgeht. Ist das eine effektive Art, mit dem Thema umzugehen? Bringt der Umgang mit dem Thema „TOD“ eine bewusstere Art und Weise der eigenen, persönlichen Sicht auf das Leben und das tägliche Leben? Ist es sinnvoller, als dieses Thema aus Ihren Gedanken zu verdrängen?

Jake: WITHERFALL haben sicherlich einen Fluch um sich herum. Bei jeder Platte, die wir herausbringen, stirbt jemand aus unserem Team oder es passiert etwas Schreckliches und Lebensveränderndes mit ihm. Es ist schwer für uns, nicht über diese Dinge zu schreiben. Es ist tatsächlich therapeutisch.

Joseph Michael: Keiner dieser Songs ist absichtlich entstanden. Sie sind nur natürliche Ausdrücke unserer Erfahrungen. Tatsächlich sind die SCHLECHTESTEN Songs überhaupt die, die absichtlich von den Leuten geschrieben wurden, die versuchen, sich an etwas zu erinnern. Das ist so unecht. Ich hätte die Texte zu „The River“ niemals mit Absicht schreiben können. Aber sie sind subjektiv gesehen perfekt.

Vampire und Dämonen

MH: Das Video zu „As I Lie Awake“ spielt mit dem Vampirthema und ist schon nicht zimperlich. Noch bizarrer ist allerdings das Video zu „The Other Side Of Fear“. In dem sehr freizügigen, mit Horrorelementen getränkten Video grassiert die Sünde in Einheit mit christlicher Symbolik wie dem Kreuz oder der Nonne. Ein fratzenhafter Dämon agiert als teuflischer Priester. Was ist die Idee und Absicht dahinter?

Joseph Michael: Heil Satan!

Jake: Eine Sache, die ich gerne loswerden möchte, ist, dass die Videos Spaß machen und unterhaltsam sein sollen. Unsere eigentliche Repräsentation unseres Images sind die Albumcover und das Merchandise. So wie ich das sehe, sind die Videos nur Gefäße für die Songs, um sie zu verbreiten und die Leute zum Reden zu bringen.

Joseph Michael: Also mal Spaß beiseite! Erinnerst Du Dich noch an die Zeit, als Rockmusik noch Spaß machte, gesellschaftliche Normen in Frage stellte und die Grenzen der Kunst auslotete? Ich auch nicht, das ist schon lange her. Wir versuchen unser Bestes, ein wenig davon zurückzubringen.

Farben und Emotionen

MH: Bisher bestanden Eure Cover-Artworks immer aus Tönen innerhalb eines Farbspektrums. Bei „Noctures And Reqiems“ war es braun, bei „Prelude To Sorrow“ war es blau und bei „Curse Of Autumn“ ist es rot.

Was hat es damit auf sich?

Jake: Als wir mit dem Schreiben von „Curse of Autumn“ anfingen, arbeiteten wir an Songs wie „Last Scar“ und „Otherside of Fear“. Beides sehr aggressive und wütende Art von Tracks. Joseph und ich sprechen gerne über die Farben, die wir sehen oder hören, wenn wir die Songs anhören. Diese beiden Tracks schrien nach Rot. Wir arbeiten mit Kristian Wahlin zusammen, der alle unsere Albumcover gemacht hat. Die Videos sind nur ein Spaß, das eigentliche Image macht Kristian für uns. Wir schicken ihm ein Thema, ein Farbschema und ein paar grobe Demos und Texte und wir lassen ihn malen. Er ist einer der wenigen Leute, denen Joseph und ich die komplette kreative Kontrolle überlassen.

Joseph Michael: Ich denke, die Cover sprechen für sich selbst. Kristian Wahlin kann Ihnen mehr Einblick in seine monokromatische Farbwahl geben.

Joseph und seine Sicht auf die Musik

MH: Zum Schluss habe ich noch zwei technische Fragen. Wenn man Joseph singen hört, würde man nie vermuten, dass er sich eigentlich nie als Sänger gesehen hat. Er hatte eigentlich als Gitarrist angefangen.

Wie kam er also dazu, sein verborgenes Gesangstalent zu entdecken und daran zu arbeiten? Wie schwierig war es, auf das jetzige hohe Niveau zu kommen, wo er meiner Meinung nach noch mehr emotionale Facetten in die Stimme bringt?

Joseph Michael: Ehrlich gesagt könnten Jake und ich oder jeder andere in unserem Camp das beantworten. Es ist so: Zu lieben, was man tut, unermüdlich zu arbeiten, um Ergebnisse zu erzielen und nie zu lange auf seinen Errungenschaften zu sitzen.

Ich sehe mich nicht als Sänger. Ich bin ein Komponist. Die Stimme ist ein Fahrzeug, das angetrieben werden muss. Als Gitarrist war ich es leid, von den Sängern nicht das zu bekommen, was ich brauchte. Als ich anfing zu singen, merkte ich, dass ich etwas Einzigartiges in die Konversation einbringen konnte. Abgesehen davon reden wir hier über Musik. Die Stimme, die Gitarre, der Bass, alles Vehikel für die Komposition.

Und nun etwas für die Profis….

Stimmt es, dass die Gitarren auf dem neuen Album einen Halbton tiefer gespielt werden als auf dem letzten Album, d.h. von B nach A#? Warum habt Ihr das so gemacht?

Jake: Sehr gute Ohren! Ja, das ist richtig, jeder Song außer unserer Coverversion des Boston-Songs ist einen halben Schritt tiefer gestimmt. Ich habe schon immer die Art und Weise geliebt, wie Gitarren klingen, die einen halben Schritt tiefer gestimmt sind, und einige meiner größten Einflüsse tun das auch, also ist es vielleicht in meiner DNA. In Zukunft werden die WITHERFALL-Songs von tief nach hoch gestimmt sein: A# D# G# C# F# A# D# . Es gab eigentlich keinen anderen Grund, als dass ich die Art und Weise, wie die Songs in dieser Tonhöhe klingen, einfach mochte.

Joseph Michael: All diese Dinge sind bewusste Entscheidungen beim Komponieren.

Gitarrentalent Henrik Schaller

MH: Zum Schluss möchte ich Euch noch Grüße von Henrik Schaller aus Deutschland schicken, der ein Freund von mir ist. Er ist ein begeisterter Fan von Euch. Ich bin sicher, dass Ihr ihn mittlerweile auch kennt. Er ist ein toller junger Gitarrist und hat schon einige Eurer Songs gecovert. Die letzte Frage war übrigens seine Idee

Jake: Henrik ist ein fantastischer Gitarrist! Ich liebe es, alle seine Covers zu sehen, die er aufführt und hochlädt. Henrik macht einen tollen Job beim Transkribieren und Ausführen der Songs. Ich bin sicher, jeder wird seinen Namen hören und sehen. Ich bin ein Fan von ihm!

English interview

WITHERFALL (Facebook) have released their masterpiece „Curse Of Autumn“ (Review) on 05.03.2021. The album is a mega hit. Therefore, I am even more pleased that the masterminds of WITHERFALL – Jake Dreyer and Joseph Michael – have taken the time to do an interview with `metal-heads.de despite their busy schedule. Among other things, it’s about emotions, love for music, authenticity and a possible WITHERFALL curse.

Variety

MH: With „Curse Of Autumn“ you have created your most diverse work so far. It achieves a different kind of emotional depth. The previous album „Prelude To Sorrow“ was shrouded in gloom. The new album carries more aggression and anger (see songs „The Last Scar“ and „The Other Side Of Fear“), but also more tender emotional tragic moments („The River“, „Long Time“) and songs that go slightly into the theatrical (see „Tempest“, „…All They Blew Away“). There are even crazy moments in the songs („Another Face“, „The Other Side Of Fear“).

How did it start with „Curse Of Autumn“ and what are the ideas behind it?

Jake Dreyer: The writing for Curse of Autumn began  how all Witherfall records have started; over massive amounts of red wine an acoustic guitar, pen and paper. Our songwriting between Joseph and myself is very organic and harkens back to the way bands wrote in the 70s. Everything we do is all natural. With that said we love all different styles of music and our influences are all over the place classical to 80s pop and everythting in between.

I think us not thinking about  the process and just writing is what makes it work. It goes back to our original concept of a band that has no boundaries with our songwriting; like Queen. This album is the most varied it has our shortest songs and our 15 minute Prog suite. None of it was planned though it just happens. 

Joseph Michael: Exactly! For one, “A Prelude to Sorrow” was about Adam. It was about one thing. This record is about many things that are strung together via a common thread. As far as the variety of material I don’t think it is any different that any other record we have done.

Turn negative into positive

MH: As already indicated in the first question, „Curse Of Autumn“ is an album of contrasts. This is also reflected in the videos. Compare the videos of „As I Lie Awake“ and „The Other Side Of Fear“ with the video of the song „The River“. More contrast is not possible. 

How does a song as tragically emotional as „The River“, which deals with the loss of a loved one, fit into the context of all the anger and resentment?

Joseph Michael: I think all anger is triggered by resentment and the sense of loss or unfairness. Another theme on this album is personal empowerment. Taking these potentially negative experiences and not only overcoming them but creating positive things from them, such as the songs themselves.

A curse on WITHERFALL?

MH: „The River“ is dedicated to Joseph’s late father. The last album „Prelude To Sorrow“ revolves around the death of Adam Saga, who was drummer with you and unfortunately passed away after a serious illness. 

It seems that you deal with the topic of death in a musically offensive way. Is that an effective way of dealing with the subject? Does dealing with the topic „DEATH“ bring about a more conscious way of one’s own personal view of life and daily living? Is it more meaningful than pushing this topic out of your thoughts?

Jake Dreyer: Witherfall certainly have a Curse around us. Every record we put out someone on our team dies or something terrible and life changing happens to them. It is hard for us not to write about these things. It is actually therapeutic. 

Joseph Michael: None of these songs came about intentionally. They are just natural expressions of our experiences. In fact the WORST songs ever are the ones written intentionally by the people trying to memorialize something. That is so fake. I could never have written the lyrics to the River with intention. But they are subjectively perfect.

Vampires and demons

MH: The video for „As I Lie Awake“ plays with the vampire theme and is already not squeamish. The video for „The Other Side Of Fear“, however, is even more bizarre. In the very revealing video, soaked in horror elements, sin runs rampant in unity with Christian symbolism such as the cross or the nun. A grimacing demon acts as a devilish priest. What is the idea and intention behind this?

Joseph Michael: Hail Satan!

Jake Dreyer: One thing that I would like to get out there is that the videos are suppose to be fun and entertaining to watch. Our real representation of our image is the album covers and merchandise. The way I see the videos are just vessels for the songs to get out and get people talking. 

Joseph Michael: Seriously! Remember when Rock music was fun and challenged social norms and stretched the limits of art? Me neither it was a long time ago. We try our best to bring a little of that back.

Colors and emotions

MH: So far, your cover artworks has always consisted of tones from one colour spectrum. On „Noctures And Reqiems“ it was brown, on „Prelude To Sorrow“ it was blue and on „Curse Of Autumn“ it is red.

What is it all about?

Jake Dreyer: When we started the initial writing of Curse of Autumn we were working on songs like „Last Scar“ and „Otherside of Fear“. Both very aggressive and raging type tracks. Joseph and I like to talk about the colors we see or hear when listening to the songs. Those two tracks screamed red. We use Kristian Wahlin who has done all of our album covers The videos are just fun the real image is what kristian does for us. We send him a theme, color scheme and a few rough demos and lyrics and we let him paint. He is one oft he only people that Joseph and I give complete creative control to. 

Joseph Michael: I think the covers speak for themselves. Kristian Wahlin can give you more insight into his monocromatic color choices.

Joseph and his view on music

MH: Finally, I have two technical questions. When you hear Joseph sing, you would never guess that he never actually saw himself as a singer. He had actually started as a guitarist.

So how did he come to uncover his hidden talent and work on it? How difficult was it to get to the current high level where I think he brings even more emotional facets to the voice?

Joseph Michael: Honestly Jake and I or anyone else in our camp could answer that. Loving what you do, working tirelessly to achieve results and never sitting on your accomplishments for too long. I don’t see myself as a singer. I am a composer. The voice is a vehicle that needed to be driven. I was tired of not getting what I needed from vocalists when I was a guitar player. Once I started singing I realized I had something unique to bring to the conversation. All that aside we are talking about music. The voice the guitar the bass, all vehicles for the composition.

And now something for the professionals…. 

MH: Is it true that the guitars on the new album are played a semitone lower than on the last album, i.e. from B to A#? Why did you do it that way?

Jake Dreyer: Very good ears! Yes, that is correct every song except for our cover of the Boston song is half step down. I have always loved the way that guitars sound tuned a half step in pitch and some of my biggest influences do as well so perhaps it is in my DNA. Continuing forward WITHERFALL songs will be tuned low to high A# D# G# C# F# A# D# . There was really no other reason rather than just liking the way the songs sounded at that pitch. 

Joseph Michael: All these things are conscious decisions while composing.

Guitar talent Henrik Schaller

Finally, I would like to send you greetings from Henrik Schaller from Germany, who is a friend of mine. He is an enthusiastic fan of yours. I’m sure you know him too. He is a great young guitarist and has already covered some of your songs. The last question was from him

Jake Dreyer: Henrik is a fantastic guitarist! I love watching all of his covers that he performs and uploads. Henrik does a great job on transcribing and executing the songs. I am sure everyone will be hearing and seeing his name. I am a fan of his!

Progressive Metal

WITHERFALL (Facebook ) setzen ihre Erfolgsgeschichte nach dem Vorgängeralbum “ A Prelude To Sorrow“ fort. Mit dem neuen Album „Curse Of Autumn“, welches am 05.03.2021 erscheinen wird, kann sich der geneigte Hörer fast eine Stunde an neuen Songs laben. Es fällt schwer WITHERFALL einem bestimmten Genre zuzuordnen. Vergleiche mit anderen Bands gibt es mittlerweile viele, so dass man letztendlich einfach sagen muss: Es sind einfach WITHERFALL!

Sie spielen dunkel angehauchten melodischen Metal mit ausgefeiltem und progressivem Songwriting. Die Progressivität ergibt sich nicht nur aus den teils überlangen komplexen Songs, sondern auch dadurch, dass sich WITHERFALL insgesamt eine schöne Bandbreite des Metals bieten. Das reicht von Melodic-Metal über Thrash-Metal bis hin zu eingängigem klassischen Heavy-Metal. Das Ganze wird dann noch verziert mit einer

imposanten Theatralik.

So ergibt sich ein opulentes Mahl, was die Amerikaner uns hier vorsetzen. Der Tisch ist reichhaltig gedeckt und bietet diverse erlesene Speisen. Mit dem stattlichen Intro holt man tief Luft, um Euch mit dem Song „The Last Scar“ erst einmal mit einem Sturm wegzublasen. Jeder Thrash-Metal-Fan dürfte seine helle Freude an diesem Burner haben, der direkt losbrettert wie eine Furie (=Rachegöttin, siehe hier). Dieser Song fegt ohne Gnade alles hinweg. „Wirbeln“ ist im übrigen ein gutes Stichwort: Die Gitarrensoli sind der Hammer! Hier tobt man sich in affenartiger Geschwindigkeit hochmelodisch auf der Tonleiter aus, dass man nur bewundernswert staunen kann. Was für eine Kunstfertigkeit!

Ansonsten bietet „The Last Scar“ folgende Elemente: Gewaltige zerfetzende Riffs, excessiv feuernde Drums, treibender Bass. Brutal aggressiv mit einer theatralischen Ader im Chorus. Der famose Sänger Joseph Michael shoutet und singt alles in Grund und Boden. Alles sauber und punktgenau abgeliefert. So kam ich erst gar nicht dazu weiter in das Album hineinzuhören, weil ich mir den Song wieder und wieder reingezogen habe. Nachdem meine Nackenmuskeln schließlich kapitulierten, ging es dann weiter.

Einen Gang runter

schalten WITHERFALL mit dem nächsten Track „As I Lie Awake“ und obwohl es ein toller flotter eingängiger Track ist, habe ich mich dabei ertappt, dass ich mich nach dem Burn Out bei „The Last Scar“ fast etwas „gelangweilt“ fühlte. Bei der Gesamtbetrachtung des Albums muss ich jedoch sagen, dass der hochmelodische Song gut ins Konzept passt und der Geschichte des Albums dienlich ist. Das Tempo wird etwas zurückgenommen und die Aggressivität weicht einer gefühlvolleren Stimmung. Der Song geht am ehesten in Richtung Mainstream und Radiotauglichkeit. Das Video ist aber nicht so harmlos und verleiht dem Song eine überraschend andere Ausstrahlung. Aber höret und sehet selbst.

Eine gefühlvolle Aura

umgibt den Sound von WITHERFALL. Sänger Joseph kann neben energischem Sreaming und Shouting auch sanft und behutsam in das Mikro trällern. Alles zusammen findet sich im Song „Another Face“, der als erster Song auf dem Album eine Spur progressiver rüberkommt. Der Song entpuppt sich als abwechslungsreiche melancholische Power-Ballade mit einer schönen Balance zwischen Gefühl und Härte, wobei der Gesang facettenreich erstrahlt. Der Mittelteil ab Minute 03:30 ist einfach nur crazy. Abgerundet wird der Song von einem tollen versöhnlichen Schlusspart mit wohlklingendem Chorus. Herrlich gemacht!

WITHERFALL-Musical

Ich hatte bereits die theatralische Ausstrahlung des Albums angesprochen. Der Song „Tempest“ ist dafür ein perfektes Beispiel. Mit seiner Spielzeit von über acht Minuten der zweitlängste Song auf dem Album. Es wird noch progressiver und der Song ist mit genialen Ideen gespickt. Ein sehr spannende Angelegenheit mit einer verdammt dichten Atmosphäre. Die Einbindung der glanzvoll gespielten Akustikgitarre mit Flamenco-Ansätzen finde ich hervorragend. Die Riffs sind ungewöhnlich faszinierend. Der Gesang erinnert teils dem Stil eines Musicaldarstellers, was nicht negativ gemeint ist. Denn es wird nicht übertrieben und so wird eine schöne emotionale Ebene erschaffen. Wenn man sich die cineastischen Videos von WITHERFALL anschaut, dann passt es alles zusammen und die Geschichte nimmt ihren spannenden Verlauf.

Der Kreis schließt sich

Mit den zwei kürzeren Interludes „Curse Of Autumn“ und „The Unyielding Grip Of Each Passing Day“ folgt der Song „The Other Side Of Fear“, der von seiner Erscheinung wieder sehr aggressiv auftritt und das Tempo merklich anzieht. Die Wucht erinnert mich wieder an den Song „The Last Scar“ vom Beginn, unterscheidet sich aber doch im Erscheinungsbild. Der Song klingt für mich noch eine Spur böser und gemeiner.

Eine Oase

inmitten der ganzen Wucht und Gewaltigkeit stellt z.B. die reinrassige Ballade „The River“ dar. Ein krasser Gegensatz, bei dem Sänger zunächst nur von einer Akustikgitarre begleitet wird. Hier kann Joseph seine gefühlvolle Ader voll und ganz ausleben. Angesichts der Thematik des Songs könnte es ihm einerseits leicht gefallen sein, aber andererseits auch sehr schwer, denn der Song ist seinem verstorbenen Vater gewidmet.

Sein Vater war begeisterter Angler, so dass der Titel und das Setting des Videos selbsterklärend sind. So ganz ruhig plätschert der Song aber dann doch nicht dahin. Mit Einsatz der übrigen Instrumente gewinnt die Ballade noch richtig an Kraft, die Joseph mit Sicherheit auch benötigt(e), um diesen Verlust zu bewältigen.

Monumental

setzt der Song „… And They All Blew Away“ zum Ende der Geschichte als längster Track auf dem Album an. In über 15 Minuten Spielzeit erwarten Euch noch mal alle Stärken von WITHERFALL in einem Song. Hier setzen sich die Protagonisten noch mal alle grandios Szene und übertreffen sich quasi selbst. Hier zündet Stufe um Stufe. Allein über diesen Song könnte man eine ganze Review schreiben. Meisterhafte Leistung! Eine Wahnsinnsnummer, die das Album perfekt zu einem Ende bringt. Doch moment mal…

WITHERFALL hauen noch eine Zugabe in Form von akustischen balladesken Coverversion von dem Song „Long Time“ raus. Wäre meiner Meinung nicht unbedingt notwendig gewesen, weil es nach dem opulenten Megasong „… And They All Blew Away“ irgendwie als Anhängsel wirkt, aber trotzdem ist er an sich sehr schön anzuhören.

Fazit

WITHERFALL setzen ihre Geschichte mehr als imposant fort und verzaubern Euch mit dem Album „Curse Of Autumn“. WITHERFALL zeigen sich ausgefeilter, pfiffiger und facettenreicher denn je. Dies trifft auch auf den Gesang von Joseph zu, der meiner Meinung nach auf diesem Album noch mehr von seiner mannigfaltigen Kunst darbietet. WITHERFALL erreichen damit ein neue Ebene der musikalisch emotionalen Reichhaltigkeit.

Das ist prachtvolle Unterhaltung und auch angesichts der sehr üppigen Spielzeit kann es für mich nur eine Bewertung geben:

Progressive Metal

WITHERFALL (Facebook ) continue their success story after the previous album „A Prelude To Sorrow“. With the new album „Curse Of Autumn“, which will be released on 05.03.2021, the willing listener can feast on the new songs for almost an hour. It is difficult to assign WITHERFALL to a certain genre. There are many comparisons with other bands, so that in the end you simply have to say: It’s simply WITHERFALL!

They play dark melodic metal with sophisticated and partly progressive songwriting. The progressiveness does not only result from the partly overlong complex songs, but also from the fact that WITHERFALL offer a nice range of metal overall. This ranges from melodic metal to thrash metal to catchy classic heavy metal. The whole thing is then partially embellished with a

impressive theatrics.

It is indeed opulent what the Americans present us with here. The table is richly set and offers various exquisite dishes. With the grand intro, they take a deep breath to blow you away with a storm with the song „The Last Scar“. Every thrash metal fan should have a blast with this burner, which breaks loose like a fury (= goddess of revenge, see here). This song sweeps away everything without mercy. By the way, „whirling“ is a good keyword: The guitar solos are awesome! They run riot on the scale in a highly melodic way that one can only admire with amazement. What a skill!

Apart from that, „The Last Scar“ offers the following elements: Violent shredding riffs, excessively firing drums, driving bass. Brutally aggressive with a theatrical vein in the chorus. The fabulous singer Joseph Michael shouted and sang everything into the ground. Everything delivered cleanly and to the point. So I didn’t get to listen to the album at all, because I listened to the song over and over again. After my neck muscles finally capitulated, I continued to listen.

One gear down

WITHERFALL switch gears with the next track „As I Lie Awake“ and although it’s a snappy catchy track, I found myself almost feeling a bit „bored“ after the burn out with „The Last Scar“. Looking at the album as a whole, I have to admit that the highly melodic song fits in well and serves the story of the album. The tempo is somewhat reduced and the aggressiveness gives way to a more soulful mood. This song goes most in the direction of mainstream and radio suitability. But the video is not so harmless and gives the song a surprisingly different aura. But listen and see for yourself.

A soulful aura

surrounds the sound of WITHERFALL. Singer Joseph can not only sream and shout energetically, but also sing softly and gently. Everything together is found in the song „Another Face“, which is the first song on the album and comes across as a bit more progressive. The song turns out to be a varied melancholic power ballad with a nice balance between emotion and harshness, whereby the vocals shine in many facets. The middle part from minute 03:30 is just crazy. It is rounded off by a great conciliatory final part with a melodious chorus. Wonderfully done!

WITHERFALL-Musical

I already mentioned the theatrical aura of the album. The song „Tempest“ is a perfect example of this. With its playing time of over eight minutes, it is the second longest song on the album. It gets even more progressive and the song is peppered with brilliant ideas. A very exciting affair with a damn dense atmosphere. I find the inclusion of the gloriously played acoustic guitar excellent. The riffs are unusually fascinating. The singing is partly reminiscent of the style of a musical performer, which is not meant in a negative way. Because it is not overdone and so a beautiful emotional level is created. If you look at the cinematic videos of WITHERFALL, it all fits together and the story takes its exciting course.

The circle closes

Two shorter interludes „Curse Of Autumn“ and „The Unyielding Grip Of Each Passing Day“ are followed by the song „The Other Side Of Fear“, which is again very aggressive in its appearance and noticeably increases the tempo. The force reminds me again of the song „The Last Scar“ from the beginning, but it is different. The song sounds even more evil and mean to me.

An oasis

in the midst of all the force and violence is represented, for example, by the thoroughbred ballad „The River“. A massive contrast, where the singer is initially accompanied only by an acoustic guitar. Here Joseph can fully live out his soulful streak. Given the subject matter of the song, it might have been easy for him on the one hand, but very difficult on the other, because the song is dedicated to his deceased father.

His father was an enthusiastic fisherman, so the title and the setting of the video are self-explanatory. However, the song doesn’t just plod along quietly. With the use of the other instruments, the ballad gains epic power.

Monumental

the song „… And They All Blew Away“ comes to the end of the story as the longest track on the album. In over 15 minutes of playing time, you can once again expect all the strengths of WITHERFALL in one song. Here, the protagonists all put themselves in the limelight once again and virtually surpass themselves. Stage after stage ignites here. You could write a whole review about this song alone. Masterful performance! An amazing song that brings the album to a perfect end. But wait a minute…

WITHERFALL play an encore in the form of the acoustic ballad „Long Time“. Wouldn’t have been necessary in my opinion, because after the opulent mega song „… And They All Blew Away“ it somehow seems like an appendage, but nevertheless it is very beautiful to listen to.

Result

WITHERFALL continue their story more than impressively and enchant you with the album „Curse Of Autumn“. WITHERFALL are more sophisticated, clever and multi-faceted than ever. This also applies to the vocals of Joseph, who in my opinion presents even more of his manifold art on this album. WITHERFALL reach a new level of musical emotional richness.
