Irgendwie haben wir schon eine ganze Weile OCEANICA hier bei metal-heads.de auf dem Schirm. Das Projekt des Multiinstrumentalisten Ben Harris-Hayes ist immer wieder für interessante Releases gut. Und jetzt ist es mal wieder soweit. Am 01.07.2025 starten wir mit der neuen EP „Try not to dwell on it“ in den neuen Monat. Die Scheibe kommt über Prog On! Recordings in den Handel. Dabei handelt es sich um einen einzigen Track von gut 21 Minuten Spielzeit. Daher können wir euch den auch nicht vorspielen. Aber eigene Eindrücke zu der Nummer schildern.

OCEANICA – „Try not to dwell on it“ (EP) (VÖ: 01.07.2025)

Langsam baut sich da was auf. Verzerrter Sound, einzelne Trommelschläge. Man harrt aus, wartet auf eine Steigerung und…dann geschieht es. Nach etwa 2 Minuten setzt das Schlagzeug mit mehreren Anteilen ein, dazu düstere Klänge der E-Gitarre mit schwer anmutenden Riffs. Aber auch melodische Elemente werden integriert. Anfangs choral daherkommender Gesang. Später ein kurzes Innehalten, die Stimme jetzt sanft. Die Gitarre sehr akzentuiert. In Minute 7 nimmt das Ganze Fahrt auf, verströmt mehr Energie, es gibt eine gewisse Heavyness. Aber doch sehr gemäßigt. Melodisch, eher dezent agieren die Drums im Hintergrund, aber sie stellen doch im Verlauf einen gewissen Antreiber dar.

Der Gesang wird eindringlicher. Alles hat Power. Etwa zur Mitte des Stückes wieder eine sehr zurückhaltende Darbietung. Ich finde das in der zweiten Hälfte zu dünn, zu langatmig. Das muss mehr fesseln. Immer wieder flackert etwas auf. Energie, Drive…und es darf ja auch mal eine ruhigere Passage sein. Aber das ist teils schon sehr seicht. Das soweit zur EP…

Aber wir stellen euch hier direkt mal einen anderen Song namens „At peace“ vor. Eine etwas melancholische, nachdenkliche Nummer und doch mit harmonischen Melodien. Das Ganze versprüht eine gewisse Leichtigkeit. Die Musik passt zu dem daruntergelegten Video mit Naturaufnahmen. Der Song ist das jüngste Release des Musikers und zeigt die Vielseitigkeit auf.

Das Fazit zur OCEANICA-EP

Fazit: 21 Minuten sind schon eine Distanz, die man erst einmal mitgehen muss. Man fragt sich immer mal, warum man das als einen Song gestaltet. Könnte man auch aufteilen und gut. Aber das ist wohl so etwas wie künstlerische Freiheit. Insgesamt ist es ok, aber da war ich echt schon mehr begeistert von OCEANICA. Einige Passagen sind zu langatmig und wenig packend gestaltet. Wie gefällt euch die Musik?

Wir hatten uns bereits früher schon einmal hier auf metal-heads.de mit OCEANICA beschäftigt und euch das Debüt vorgestellt. Im Jahr 2023 stand dann das Release des neuen Albums namens „Panta rhei“ an. Wir hatten euch bereits hier mit dem Video zum Song „Lumiere“ darauf hingewiesen. OCEANICA ist das Baby von Ben Harris-Hayes, den wir euch schon mal im Interview vorgestellt hatten.

Das neue Album beginnt mit dem Opener mit dem Titel „Photographs found on an old camera“. Mit viel Hall, experimentell und elektronisch pulsierend, dann aber wieder sanft und melodisch. So wirkt der erste Song auf uns. Streicher…dann fast zur Mitte der 9 Minuten wird es kraftvoll, heavy mit Riffs auf E-Gitarren und dem Schlagzeug. Auch Gesang ist jetzt dabei. Später treten Gitarrenmelodien etwas mehr in den Fokus, es wird nachdenklicher. Beim zweiten Track geht es ziemlich direkt heftig zur Sache. Und weird…es hat etwas Schräges. Manche Bands müssen aus der Konformität ausbrechen. Es hat ein bisschen etwas Verstörendes. Hoffentlich geht es nicht dauerhaft auf diese Weise weiter…

OCEANICA – „Panta rhei“ (Bereits veröffentlicht)

„Roll the bones“ verbreitet eine melancholische Stimmung. Akustikgitarren, „leichter Gesang“, wie aus der Ferne…diskrete Percussionsounds. Dann auch hier wieder, recht unvermittelt…aggressive Vocals, die einem entgegen schallen. Die E-Gitarren und die Drumbeats unterstreichen ihrerseits die Heavyness. Zum Ende nimmt man das Tempo raus, es wird noch etwas düsterer, tiefer gestimmt. Auf das vierte Lied der Scheibe müssen wir ja nicht näher eingehen. Das Video kennt ihr bereits. Die nachfolgende Nummer legt gleich amtlich mit Power los. Das Video zeigt einen Mann im Anzug, der die Straße entlangläuft und dabei Leute trifft. Dann findet er sich immer wieder in (s)einem Bett. Später trifft er in der Firma ein. Er wirkt durchgehend gequält, bedrückt. Dann Lunch Break…Entspannung. Aber nur kurz! Jemand klaut sein Sandwich und er ist wieder auf dem Weg…am Ende hält er sich eine Pistole an den Kopf und dann…ach das könnt ihr euch auch selbst ansehen.

Es folgt „The new human agenda“. Wir bewegen uns im Video in einer Kirche, sehen einen Geistlichen. Gemäßigter Gesang, die Gitarren recht zurückhaltend im Background. Dann nehmen Schlagzeug und auch die E-Gitarren etwas an Fahrt auf. Die Stimme hat einen Touch von Kirchengesang. In der zweiten Hälfte wird es etwas mehr heavy, aber bleibt noch recht gemäßigt. Der Song gefällt mir so mit am besten auf dem Release.

Track 7 wird zunächst vom gemäßigten Gesang mit Gitarrenriffs im Hintergrund dominiert. Schon bald wird der Druck mit treibenden Drums erhöht. Über eine längere Passage bleibt es aber recht unaufgeregt im Mittelteil. Nach etwa dreieinhalb Minuten dann noch einmal Speed und Härte über eine längere Strecke…dann geht es recht rasch zu Ende.

Der Songtitel hat etwas Hoffnungsfrohes, für positive Gedanken. Der musikalische Einstieg ist etwas melancholisch, nachdenklich. Es hat etwas von einer Filmmusik. Aber der Vibe ist schon positiv. Wenn man sich den Rest des Materials anhört, dann weiß man…das wird irgendwann anders…sicher. Und wir werden nicht „enttäuscht“. Nach 3 Minuten wird es mit dominanten E-Gitarren wieder heavier, wenn auch melodisch. Riffs rocken, das Schlagzeug setzt Akzente. Der Gesang ist harmonisch. Dann klingt der Song langsam aus. Und ehe man sich versieht, ist man am Ende des Albums. Entspannt…ich musste direkt an meditative Musik und Yoga denken. So geht es los. Dann fängt es an in Richtung Rock zu driften, diesen Status hält man über weite Strecken.

Das Fazit zum aktuellen Album von OCEANICA

Einschätzung: welches Fazit können wir also zum aktuellen OCEANICA-Album ziehen? Das Material hat eine gewisse Vielseitigkeit. Die Progressivität ist leider kaum noch vorhanden bzw. flackert nur an mancher Stelle auf. Immer wieder gibt es recht einschneidende Wechsel innerhalb der Songs. Von sanft auf heavy. Melodien spielen eine ziemliche Rolle. Der Gesang ist eher am Rande ein Thema…Vieles läuft instrumental. Ich würde das Ganze als interessant bezeichnen. Aber auch nicht so leicht zu verdauen…

Wir von metal-heads.de versorgen euch ja mit immer den neuesten Infos aus der internationalen Prog-Szene. Aber heute wollen wir diesen News-Beitrag mit einer deutschen Band eröffnen. Die Progressive Rocker von THE CRYPTEX stehen im Fokus. Die Band plant für den 29.09.2023 das Release ihres bereits vierten Longplayers namens „Nimbus“ und jetzt gibt es schon vorab ein Video zum Song „Cobra“ mit Schwarzlicht und „Kriegsbemalung“. THE CRYPTEX, INTRA & mehr

Als nächstes wandet unser Blick in unser Nachbarland nach Österreich. Von dort stammt das Trio INTRA. Ich habe – ehrlich gestanden – bisher noch nicht von der Truppe gehört, aber schon der erste Eindruck ist positiv. Der heavy Prog, den Sängerin Bianca und ihre beiden Mitstreiter uns hier mit „Last born“ servieren, weiß auf Anhieb zu gefallen. Ist es das proggige? Der mitreißende Beat? Ich weiß nicht. Es macht einfach Bock. Das solltet ihr selbst erleben:

Und Ende dieses Jahres soll dann das zweite Album erscheinen. Wir harren gespannt aus.

Für eine kleine Insel ist die Isle of man vor der britischen Küste recht bekannt. Aber wusstet ihr auch bereits, dass AEONS von dort stammen? Die Progressive Metal-Combo hat mit „Bloodstains“ einen Song vom Album „Consequences“ herausgebracht. Die fünf Herren haben eine passende Mischung aus Härte, Melodie und Progressivität für uns. Was meint ihr. Ab geht’s!

Wow! Satte neun Jahre haben THE MIGHTY BARD die Fans ausharren lassen, bevor man im Juli 2023 endlich mit „Beyond the gate“ das neue Studioalbum herausgebracht hat. In der Zwischenzeit sind auch entsprechende Line up-Wechsel zu vermelden. So trommelt jetzt Tom Mear und den Part des Sängers hat Benj übernommen. Wenn ihr eine Idee davon bekommen wollt, wie die neue Scheibe mit dem Coverartwork von Duncan Storr klingt, dann haben wir für euch hier den Song „Magician“.

Zum Abschluss kommen wir zum aktuellen Release von OCEANICA. Wir hatten euch 2019 das Vorgängeralbum hier mit einer Review vorgestellt. Augenscheinlich ist die neue musikalische Ausrichtung etwas härter. Aber das muss ja nicht schlimm sein. Bildet euch doch selbst eine Meinung nach dem Hören der Single-Auskopplung „Panta rhei“.

Nach dem Abschluss der Trilogy mit einer weltraumorientierten Thematik sind LONELY ROBOT mit mehr persönlichen Themen zurück auf der Erde. Das Material stellen wir euch in einer Review in den kommenden Tagen vor. Es isst auch für Dezember 2020 geplant, die Songs des am 17.07.2020 erscheinenden Albums live auf die Bühne zu bringen. Ob es denn letztlich klappt, wird die weitere Entwicklung im Rahmen der Corona-Pandemie zeigen. Wir drücken die Daumen und wenn es gut geht, sind wir für euch vor Ort!

Nach DREAM THEATER und SONS OF APOLLO jetzt solo

Aus seiner Zeit bei DREAM THEATER ist Keyboarder Derek Sherinian ohnehin kein Unbekannter. Dann hat er sich in den letzten Monaten durch sein Mitwirken bei den SONS OF APOLLO im Zusammenspiel mit seinem ehemaligen Bandkollegen Mike Portnoy wieder ins Gespräch gebracht. Und jetzt? Jetzt kommt nach einer Pause von 11 Jahren das nächste Soloalbum des Tastenvirtuosen. Der Titel ist schlicht „The phoenix“ und es finden sich zahlreiche namhafte Hochkaräter an den anderen Instrumenten. Drummer-Legende Simon Philipps übernimmt einmal mehr den Schlagzeugpart, hat aber auch an der Musik mitgeschrieben und das Album co-produziert. Ansonsten ist u.a. Steve Vai involviert. Wir sind sehr gespannt auf das Resultat und stellen es auch näher in einer Review vor, sobald uns das Material vorliegt.

Das Album von LUFEH ist schon auf dem Markt und wir haben es euch in einer Review hier vorgestellt. Jetzt haben wir ein weiteres Video dazu für euch.

Drummer Lufeh Batera meint dazu Folgendes: „‚My World‘ offers a different side of the LUFEH/“Luggage Falling Down“ sound. It’s almost a power ballad but with the rollercoaster twist and turns of a Prog Metal band. The song features a Phrygian dominant chord structure, a bulbul tarang solo, a shredding guitar solo, a funk break down, and lyrics that focus heavily on doing the right thing. The song could be described as ‚if a 20-minute Prog epic could take place over the course of a standard 4.5-minute rock song‘.”

Neues Material von OCEANICA – was haltet ihr davon?

Das letzte Album von OCEANICA haben wir euch hier vorgestellt. Und auch ein Interview gab’s dazu. Das findet ihr dort. Jetzt gibt es also ein neues Lebenszeichen und das haben wir für euch in Form eines Videos am Start. Macht euch selber ein Bild. Ich persönlich finde es recht langatmig und schwer zugänglich…aber das Album hatte mir gut gefallen, daher denke und hoffe ich, wenn wir noch mehr Songs zu hören bekommen, werde auch ich versöhnt.

Der Weg führt nach Down under…

GLASS OCEAN sind eine in der australischen Heimat (und darüber hinaus!?) zunehmend angesagte Prog-Formation. Am 21.08.2020 soll das Debütalbum „The remnants of losing yourself to someone else“ in den Handel kommen. Dazu gibt es jetzt ein weiteres Video vorab. Hört/schaut mal…das sind mal eher nachdenkliche Töne in der doch oftmals hektischen und von Terminstress geprägten Zeit.

MH: I´m Amir from the German music magazine www.metal-heads.de – we are based in the Ruhr area, that you might know or have heard of with venues like the Zeche in Bochum, the Turock in Essen or Westfallenhalle in Dortmund.

First of all, I have to tell you honestly, that I had not heard from ENOCHIAN THEORY before I got to listen to OCEANICA. But hey, the scene is huge and there are so many bands coming and going all the time. It´s really hard to keep track. Anyway, I´m always interested to learn about „new“ bands and there music, especially if it´s prog oriented somehow. So I listened to your album, wrote a review and now I wann hear more…

BHH: Hi, Amir.
Thank you for allowing me the chance to talk about OCEANICA and other things! I played Zeche in Bochum a few years back, amongst many other German venues on tours with numerous
bands. (Spocks Beard, Threshold, etc). We also played Loreley at Night Of The Prog…which an amazing experience. You can find videos for ENOCHIAN THEORY online, playing live.
I always enjoyed touring in Europe.

MH: 1.) So I´d like to begin with the question, what attracted you, after your time in ENOCHIAN THEORY to do OCEANICA and would you call it a „solo album“?

How did OCEANICA come up?

BHH: Well, ENOCHIAN THEORY went on hiatus and I had a lot of music that I wanted to complete. Having not been able to complete anything for quite some time (5+ years), because I let that negative internal voice in my head repeatedly tell me I wasn’t good enough…I feel continuing and completing 3 albums with OCEANICA was just the right tonic for me, personally.
And I guess it’s subjective, but to me, it is definitely a solo album because I was the only person truly involved in it! I wrote, played every instrument, recorded, mixed and mastered the entire project…so, I guess it’s the true definition of a solo album? Admittedly, I had a co-mixer on the final album and a friend co-engineering the recording of the drums because
no one is perfect and sometimes admitting you need help is perfectly fine; especially on such a huge undertaking as true solo album. I also collaborated vocally on ‚Towards The Sun‘ with some other artists because I wanted a curveball of a track in there that links with the next 2 albums…but everything else is just me…on my lonesome…

MH: 2.) Where do you see a particular difference, I mean, what could you do now, that you couldn´t with ENOCHIAN THEORY?

BHH: Well, E.T went on hiatus, so I needed an output for my creative approaches. I reached a place where I needed to complete some music and this was the right time. I guess with doing a project on your own, you don’t have to consider other people’s opinions, abilities or thoughts in regards to your own creative vision. That’s how it could be seen. But for me, it was more about challenging myself to see if I could do it.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the band environment and what can be achieved as a collective…but for me in this exact moment in my life, I wanted to try to do a record…or in this case, 3 albums because I had so much varied material; on my own. I always wanted to try it and I feel that just completing such an undertaking was a massive boost for my mental health after a few years of struggling to finish anything.

Two drummers talking…

MH: 3.) As a drummer, that cannot play any other instrument, I´m really impressed, that you played all the instruments by yourself (except drums, right!?)? How did you start playing instruments at all, and how did it develop further on?

BHH: Ah, greetings fellow drummer! I started playing drums when I was 8 years old and played in bands for years before I picked up the guitar as a way to express myself differently and to write my own full arrangements. Bass came next, then keys/piano and that was really the process of personal development. I wanted to, after years of playing, be able to write and arrange for all the instruments I’d learned.

I don’t profess to be an expert at any instrument, but I am confident enough in my ability to give anything a good effort; once I get some practice under my belt. Over the years I favoured certain instruments over others because of whatever band situation I would find myself in, but about 2-3 years ago I decided to really practice all the key ‚rock‘ instruments again and get around to completing the OCEANICA project. Again, I feel this was a very, very positive thing to do.

MH: 4.) Let´s talk about influences! I guess, when someone writes songs, there is always a musical input from somewhere? What are your musical influences these days and in the past months?

Life is a big influence

BHH: Life. The day to day existence of life is more than enough influence for me! I don’t keep myself up to date with too much new music to be honest…which is possibly a bad thing, but when I get firmly into a writing phase I don’t like to be influenced unduly. And I just like what I know…or rather, want to write whatever I feel I want to write. I tend to get shown some new things by friends, come across things by luck or hear something when I’m out…and it could be any genre. My favourite recent enjoyments from other bands have been the last Chase & Status album, the last Archspire and Alkaloid records, the entire Grouplove back catalogue and Alan Walker. Not exactly Prog…heh heh.

MH: 5.) How would you describe your personal development regarding the music in the last years and with
the releases you created?

BHH: I tend to keep my Prog/Rock/Metal projects separate from my other musical endeavors, which have helped me develop as a musician. I feel that exploring other musical styles has allowed me to revisit Rock music and simply enjoy it again for what it is…but also I am able to come at it with new ideas that I developed while writing electronica/dance
music or from my film sound design work. I like a lot of different music, so my recent developments have been more around other genres and working on that…like different production styles and approaches. I also feel that ‚OneDark‘ is a simpler output when compared to say, ‚Life…And All It Entails‘, that I did under ENOCHIAN THEORY, because back then I was firmly into orchestral composition and fumbling my way through that. ‘OneDark’ is just me not caring about anyone else thoughts or opinions on what I should be doing. As a self-taught musician, it’s always harder to develop but what I have learned and accepted is that I have my own processes and ways that work for me and that’s my signature, if that makes sense. When I play anything I write to close friends, they always say „Yeah, that’s definitely you“…which I guess I like. Sure, I am influenced by a ton of musicians but I have my own approach to things.

MH: 6.) What bands would you like to go on tour with?

BHH: Sting, Grouplove, Tool, Meshuggah, Paul Simon, LTJ Bukem and pretty much any band/act that would invite me! But being that I can’t tour right now…it’s a moot point! Hahaha.

Let´s make it three albums

MH: 7.) As far as I understood, this is the first album of a trilogy. Can you explain to us the idea behind it
and a little bit about what to expect from part II and III?

BHH: Well, I originally wanted to do an album of music ranging from various styles, but I couldn’t seem to get the satisfaction I expected from doing one album. You see, I had so much music that I couldn’t resolve into one record… that, and I also eventually felt that it would never all fit cohesively into one disc unless I compromised on my vision. So, I then decided to do 3 E.P’s that showcased a variety of said progressive music that I had written over the last 7-8 years, then I changed it AGAIN to 3 albums because I kept finding myself feeling sad that I had to cut songs from the EP format tracklisting due to the amount I’d written. The main battle I had initially was that I didn’t feel I could do an album again; especially after years of being
defeated by my own mind in terms of confidence and because it’s such a huge undertaking…but eventually I worked out that it all doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things. I needed to do this all for myself, first and foremost…and that won through eventually.

Let´s get positive

My pessimistic and negative outlook on my abilities got swept away and I just thought „Stuff it, I NEED to prove
to myself that I can do this“…and the rest is history! So, what we have now is 3 albums of thematically linked music and lyrics that range from rock/metal on ‚OneDark‘, to acoustic/choral/string quartet music on ‚TwoLight‘ and soundtrack/ambient on ‚ThreeGrey‘. It covers everything I wanted to say from the last 7-8 years. Competition of this cycle of 3 albums, which will be released over the next 18-36 months, was the perfect tonic for me and it’s allowed the creative spark to ignite a flame in me that is currently fuelling the next part of the OCEANICA project, which is a double-album entitled ‚Let There Be A Way Through The Waters‘. But I’ve got to be careful not to push too far ahead without giving the care and attention to the first 3 albums, so I need to be mindful of that…but it’s very exciting for me to just write without hindrance or a defeatist attitude.

MH: 8.) A look in the future – where do you see yourself in 10 years – regarding the music and life in
general?

A look in the future

BHH: Who knows? I could be dead. Hahaha. Honestly, I can never say really, but I guess would just let continue on the path of being happy and seeing where the spiral goes. The rest is merely a bonus.

MH: 9.) Are there any plans to play festivals in 2020 or go on tour with the album?

BHH: I don’t at the moment, purely because I resolved to not tour again a few years back. I’m currently traveling the world (currently in The Philippines!) and enjoying seeing this beautiful planet at a leisurely pace which you cannot do when touring because touring is a time-consuming business venture with lots of people relying on you. Don’t get me wrong, I miss playing live…but I don’t miss how difficult it all is logistically, monetarily and mentally. The toll that touring takes on not just yourself, but also those that are back home is staggering at times.
Once I’ve seen some more the world and settled somewhere, and if I can find like-minded people to work with, maybe I’ll consider doing some shows…but it has to be right for me. I resolved to myself that music should be fun and I won’t ever let it not be enjoyable again.

MH: 10.) Towards the end of this interview, I´d like to know some things about your other interests and
hobbies – I mean apart from consuming and creating/performing music. Please tell us about that!

For the love of…food

BHH: I love food. Preparation, cooking and consuming of food! During my current world travels, I am getting to embrace my love of trying new foods and new ways of creating foods; sometimes from things I never tried before. So, that is a particular love of mine. I devour books rapidly, so reading is another part-time I enjoy. Despite my adoration of technology, I don’t really like things like Kindles and digital books. I much prefer the tactile aspect of a good book.

The smell, the feel and the immersive realm of a book is magical to me. As mentioned, I’m traveling around the world on my own terms, so travelling and embracing different cultures is an eye-opener and my latest addiction. There’s just so much out there. I’ve got into shooting, editing and creating my own videos too, but I don’t have much time to do that on the road.

MH: 11.) It´s a tradition for us to leave the last words to our interview partners. Do you have a final message for our readers out there? About yourself, music in general or the new album…whatever…

BHH: Well, first of all, thank you for reading this. I tend to tangent a bit, so apologies if some of this interview doesn’t make sense…but what you’ve got here is the 2019 edition of Ben! It’s a stripped-back, more positive and laid-back person…and I’m happy I realized the negative things in my life and cast them aside. I’m someone that is a lot happier in his own skin now than he’s ever been…and if I can say anything to anyone who is struggling with any form of depression, anxiety or other health problem… please do what makes you happy, whatever that is and I hope you find a way to be happy. In regards to the music…

Somit näherte ich mich neugierig und völlig offen (ohne eine konkrete Erwartung) als es hieß, deren Frontmann Ben Harris-Hayes habe jetzt sein Debüt fertig und eine Veröffentlichung stehe für Ende Oktober an.

Ein Multitalent – Frontmann Ben Harris-Hayes

Der Mann muss es ja echt drauf haben…hat er doch die komplette Musik selbst geschrieben und eingespielt, wenn ich den Text in den mir vorliegenden Unterlagen korrekt deute!! Aber keine Sorge. Wir wollen zu diesem Release und den weiteren musikalischen Plänen – schließlich handelt es sich ja erst einmal um Teil 1 einer Trilogie – mehr vom Künstler wissen und werden ihm in einem entsprechenden Interview da mal genauer auf den Zahn fühlen.

Musikalisch geht es mit einem Intro im Stil einer Spieluhr los. Track 3 „All the cool kidz r doin´ it“ kommt dann richtig heavy und mitreißend ´rüber. Das bringt Bock auf mehr. Eine gewisse Melancholie und Schwere schwingt mit. Mit dem nachfolgenden Song geht es auf derselben Schiene weiter. Doublebass-Einlagen unterstreichen die Power. Stark!

Von Prog in heavy bis zu seichteren Tönen

Im weiteren Verlauf des Releases entwickelt sich eine etwas entspanntere Stimmung…ohne dass die grundsätzliche Marschrichtung aus den Augen verloren wird. Teils rücken die melodischen E-Gitarren mehr in den Fokus – als Beispiel sei hier „Oubliette“ erwähnt. Die Drums liefern einen proggigen Beat dazu, Tasteninstrumente erschaffen eher sphärische Klanggebilde. Mit „Got a feeling“ wird es fast ein bisschen mainstreamig und leichtfüßig. Sicher nicht schlecht, aber nicht das, was ich nach dem bisherigen Input auf dieser Scheibe erwartet hätte.

Auch der nächste Track geht in diese poppig-seichte Richtung. Nicht mein Ding, insbesondere nicht auf einem solchen Album. An anderer Stelle mag es ja passen und Sinn machen.

Zum Glück…wieder zurück zum Rock

Da freut man sich direkt, wenn es beim schlicht mit „8“ betitelten neunten Song auf „One dark“ deutlich mehr rockt. Das lässt für den Rest des Materials hoffen. Das zehnte Stück auf diesem Debüt versucht – und das gelingt recht gekonnt – die Heaviness und Eingängigkeit der vorherigen Lieder zu kombinieren. Das passt! Auch mit „The rose, abloom“ geht es vergleichbar weiter.

Nach einem von einer weiblichen Stimme gesprochenen Einschub kommt der Abschluss mit dem längsten Track (über 7 Minuten Spielzeit). Dieser beginnt mit Pianoklängen. Baut sich langsam auf. Gedrückte Stimmung, aber auch ein Schimmer von Hoffnung. Heavy wird es nicht mehr…muss ja auch nicht.

Das Fazit von metal-heads.de

Fazit: das Debüt des ENOCHIAN THEORY-Sängers ist gelungen, wenn auch der eine oder andere Tracks etwas fehlplatziert wirkt. Ich bin gespannt auf inhaltliche Erkenntnisse zur Musik, Entstehungsgeschichte und musikalischen Zukunft…dazu wie gesagt das oben erwähnte Interview, das ihr hier bei metal-heads.de bekommt.

Es dauert keine drei Wochen mehr, dann steht endlich das neue Album der Herrschaften von OF MICE & MEN in den Regalen der Musikhändler. Genauer gesagt ist es der 27.09.2019, den ihr euch fett im Kalender markieren solltet. Dann gibt es „Earth and sky“ beim Label Rise Records. Wer es nicht mehr abwarten kann und deshalb gerne noch einen weiteren Vorgeschmack auf die neue Scheibe mit ihren 11 Songs hätte (wir von metal-heads.de hatten ja bereits hier einen Höreindruck geliefert), wird jetzt erlöst.

Was sagt die Band dazu?

Sänger und Bassist Aaron Pauley gibt dieses Statement ab: „Taste of Regret is a song about knowing when to pick your battles, and also knowing when to shut your mouth and bite your tongue. „Loose lips sink ships,“ as the age old cliché goes. There’s a lot of truth in that though. One’s loud mouth can ruin their life.”

Tino Arteaga, der Mann hinter dem Schlagzeug ergänzt: „pulling inspiration from old psychological thrillers & filmmaking from the 70’s & 80’s, Taste of Regret continues our ongoing visual narrative of the previous 3 videos for this album at an alternate point in the timeline.”

Wer ist OCEANICA?

Ihr kennt sicher OCEANICA! Nein!? Kein Wunder! Das ist ein Newcomer. Wir verraten euch gerne mehr. Also die Formation ENOCHIAN THEORY ist euch wahrscheinlich ein Begriff. Deren Frontmann Ben Harris-Hayes hat nun im Alleingang eine Soloscheibe unter dem Namen OCEANICA eingespielt und will diese unter dem Titel „One dark“ am 25.10.2019 unter´s Volk bringen. Offenbar ist der gute Mann nicht nur sehr talentiert und Multiinstrumentalist. Er hat auch unbändiges kreatives Potential. So stellt gemäß der uns vorliegenden Ankündigung dieses Debüt den ersten Teil eines Triptych-Releases dar. Das bedeutet eine Veröffentlichung in 3 zusammengehörigen Teilen.

Was wir schon von der Musik des Materials hören konnten, klingt stark. rockig, proggig…

Endlich neue Musik – GREEN CARNATION

Lange hat man die Fans auf neues Material warten lassen. 14 Jahre, um genau zu sein. Die Rede ist von den norwegischen Prog Meistern GREEN CARNATION. Endlich ist es soweit und in diesem Monat wird das Studio geentert, um ein für das kommende Jahr geplantes Album einzuspielen. Dieses wird einen Brückenschlag darstellen: es soll 3 neue Songs enthalten, ein Remake vom Debütalbum und dazu einen Coversong. Klingt nach einer interessanten Mischung. Sänger Kjetil Nordhus meint dazu: “We are very happy to be able to announce this now. The band has made some big plans, yet to be revealed, and this release is the first part of that. First we thought we were going to record an EP, but we have been in creative mood, so it is going to be a proper full length album, with almost 50 minutes of music, and five songs“.
