Wir von metal-heads.de haben euch eine hoffentlich interessante Zusammenstellung an Material gemixt. Den Anfang machen FATAL VISION mit der Single „Girl against the world“. Die kanadischen Melodic Rocker haben einen weltweiten Deal mit Escape Music abgeschlossen und wollen ihr bereits viertes Studioalbum „Four sides to every story“ mit 14 Tracks am 22.05.2026 herausbringen:

SOLAR MANTRA sind eine italienische Stoner Rock Band. Die vier Herren wollen uns mit dem Lyric Video zur Single „Dynamite“ auf das am 08.05.2026 über Argonauta Records erscheinende neue Album „State of joyful lightness“ einstimmen – bitte sehr:

Es ist einer der Songs der EP „Resurgance“, auf der man ein paar Stücke mit der Aufnahme einer aktuellen Version bedacht hat.

Stoner Rock aus dem Süden Europas gefällig? Dann hört euch mal den Song „A brand new grave“ an. Das ist die brandneue Single des italienischen Vierers SOLAR MANTRA. Ist das ein Vorgeschmack auf ein mögliches kommendes Studiowerk?

Wenn man es ein bisschen düsterer mag, dann ist man bei MAMMON’S THRONE an der richtigen Adresse. 6 Jahre nach dem Debütalbum hat die australische Death Doom Formation mit „My body to the worms“ ein neues Studiowerk für ein Release über Hammerheart Records am 13.03.2026 am Start. Wir haben das Video zum Song „Elixir“ für euch:

Es gibt Bandnamen, die geben einem Rätsel auf. Das trifft im doppelten Sinn auf die Band FUSSKALT zu. Zum einen ist der Bandname an sich schon sehr skurril und lustig und zaubert deshalb einem sofort ein Grinsen auf das Gesicht. Was würde man nun musikalisch von einer Band wie FUSSKALT erwarten. Ich hätte mir vieles vorstellen können, aber ich hätte mit jeder Idee so was von falsch gelegen. Denn diese Band spielt verdammt heißen Stoner Rock mit verschiedenen Einflüßen und Ausprägungen. Darüber hinaus wird es noch witziger, wenn man die Herkunft dieser Band bedenkt. Es ist keine deutsche Band, denn FUSSKALT stammen aus Dänemark.

FUSSKALT sind auch nicht neu im Musikgeschäft, sondern haben ihre ersten Songs bereits 2012 veröffentlicht. Eigentlich geht es hier um das aktuelle Album „Faceless Man“, aber ich finde die musikalische Historie der Band sehr interessant und möchte einige Wort zu den bisherigen Releases verlieren. Denn die Entwicklung finde ich schon interessant und bemerkenswert. Wer mehr über die Jungs, ihren ungewöhnlichen Bandnamen und über ihren musikalischen Werdegang erfahren möchte, der sollte sich unser Interview ebenfalls durchlesen.

Und ich hätte nicht unbedingt erwartet, dass die ersten veröffentlichten Songs schon derart stark aus den Boxen knallen. Angefangen hat es mit der EP „Songs For Speedin‘ And Crashin‘ (vol.1)“ im Dezember 2012. Es gibt drei Songs, die so verdammt satt und groovig klingen, dass ich meinen Körper nicht stillhalten kann. Dabei ist handwerklich alles top und auf einem hohen Niveau. Sobald der Song „Dead Man Walking“ losrollt, gibt es kein Halten mehr. Einfach unwiderstehlich dieser Sound. Der geht direkt ins Blut und in die Knochen. Und durstig macht der Stoner Desert Rock auch noch. Die Songs verlieren ihren fetten Groove auch nicht, wenn es mal langsamer zugeht. Und auch Sänger Lars passt mit seiner kraftvollen dreckigen Stimme einfach hervorragend zu der Mucke. (Leider verließ er später die Band während der Covid 19-Krise.)

Und zieht euch mal das geile Solo bei „When The Devil Comes (To Take You Home)“ rein. Wenn die Gitarre losheult und den Blues einatmet, dann wird mir sofort heiß ums Herz und ich packe umgehend die Luftgitarre raus. Super stark! Der Nachfolger „“Songs For Speedin‘ And Crashin‘ (vol.2)“ schlägt dem Titel entsprechend natürlich soundtechnisch in die gleiche Kerbe. Mit viel PS unter der Haube schlagen die Songs kraftvoll durch.

FUSSKALT scheinen Motorsportfans zu sein, denn auch die EP „Overdrive“ befasst sich mit dieser Thematik und die Band hat dort fünf Songs unter der Haube. Hier kommt zum ersten Mal eine Facette zum Vorschein, die man bisher noch nicht so ausgelebt hatte. „Chasing Unicorns“ wirkt schwerfällig und hat einen doomigen Touch. Und auch „El Toro“ ist zunächst mehr Dampfwalze als 8-Zylinder, doch das ändert sich im Laufe des Songs, wenn FUSSKALT das Tempo dann doch beschleunigen. Es ist also so, dass FUSSKALT auch Songs schreiben können, die Turns und Twists haben. Hier sei auch „Sin City“ erwähnt, wo die Band einen ruhigeren Part einbaut, der eine coole Stimmung im Song erzeugt.

Ich komme nun zum Album „Intercooler“ aus dem Jahre 2018. Ganze sieben Songs sind es auf der Scheibe geworden. Man sieht also, dass die Band sich langsam steigert, was die Anzahl der Songs angeht. Was sich schon so ein wenig angedeutet hat, wird hier weiter verfolgt. Die Songs sind nicht mehr so massiv, sondern etwas feiner gestrickt. Immer noch mit einer guten Portion Groove, aber nicht mehr immer mit dem Kopf durch die Wand, wenn man sich mal den Song „Musecifer“ anhört.

Hab so manchmal das Gefühl (z.B. beim Song „Falling Down“), dass auch ne Spur psychodelischer Komponenten Einzug erhalten hat, die den Hörer in eine andere Welt reisen lassen. Der hypnotische Song „Falling Down“ oder auch „Wrong Side Of Town“ sind solche Reisebegleiter. Manche würden meinen, dass man dazu wunderbar eine gerollte Tüte pflanzlicher Substrate genießen könnte. „Son Of Man“ erinnert dann wieder mehr an die Anfänge der Band und ist wieder ein geradliniger Rocksong. Insgesamt es ein cooles Album geworden, die auch eine gute Entwicklung aufzeigt, was neue Ideen für die Songs angeht, aber ehrlicherweise fällt mir im Gesamtbild ein wenig die brachiale wilde Energie aus den Anfängen.

Sieben Jahre später „Faceless Man“

Hui! Das ist mal eine lange Zeitspanne. Ja, die verdammte COVID-19 Krise hatte vermutlich auch damit zu tun. Zum Glück sind FUSSKALT aber nicht in Leichenstarre verfallen, sondern feiern ein großartiges Comeback mit ihrem neuen Album „Faceless Man“. In sieben Jahren passiert viel, auch mit einem Menschen. Geschmäcker ändern sich vielleicht, die Musik eventuell ebenso.

Doch FUSSKALT bleiben sich treu, auch wenn der Sound sich etwas verändert hat. Außerdem gibt es einen neuen Mann am Mikrophon, nämlich Niko. Niko ist ein würdiger Nachfolger für Lars und macht einen geilen Job. Daher scheint es fast so, als ob keine sieben Jahre nach dem Album „Intercooler“ dazwischen liegen würden. Die musikalisch kraftvolle Präsenz ist der Band nicht abhanden gekommen, findet nun aber variabler statt. Fünf neue Songs gibt es auf die Ohren, wobei man auf ca. 30 Minuten Spielzeit kommt, denn zwei Songs gehen locker über sieben Minuten. Eine Premiere stellt auch das Cover-Artwork dar. Es ist das erste Mal, dass das Motiv nichts mit Motoren oder Fahrzeugen zu tun hat. Vielmehr hat es ein spirituelles Flair. Und dies spiegelt sich in den Songs wieder.

Man hat sich von der offensiven massiven Art größtenteils, die anfangs noch einen Metal-Einschlag hatte, verabschiedet. Das Songwriting ist erheblich progressiver bzw. vielschichtiger geworden. Auch die psychodelischer Note erhält noch mehr Gewicht. FUSSKALT setzen also zum einen auf mehr Atmosphäre, aber zum anderen verliert man nicht die griffigen Riffs und den Groove. Das Gitarrenspiel ist unheimlich genial gemacht. Die Leadgitarren sorgen jederzeit für ein geiles Feeling und atmen häufig den Blues ein. Manchmal erinnert mich der Sound an die Band ‚Monster Magnet‘, deren Album „Superjudge“ mich damals voll abgeholt hatte und es immer noch tut. Ein Meilenstein für mich. Nun wollen wir aber hören, was FUSSKALT im Jahr 2025 zu bieten haben.

Wenn der Opener „Fuzz Cult“ loslegt, dann kann man einfach nicht still halten. Es hört sich so verdammt cool und schmutzig an, wenn die ersten Riffs loslegen. Kennt noch einer die Band Monster Magnet? Diese Vibes hat es bei mir ausgelöst, auch wenn FUSSKALT nicht ganz so crazy klingen. Grundsätzlich gefällt mir der erdige griffige Sound, der hier bei der Produktion gefunden wurde. Das passt einfach perfekt. Und die Gitarren entfachen bei mir laufend Feuer voller Glücksgefühle. Ich verfalle wie in einen Rausch, wenn ich mir das anhöre. Und das sogar im nüchternen Zustand. Wie sieht das denn erst nach dem Genuß von Hopfenbrause oder anderen Pflanzen aus? Na egal…. das wollen wir mal nicht näher vertiefen. Die Musik alleine kann schon berauschend genug sein. Also weiter geht’s.

„River Of Gold“ geht die Sache gemächlicher an und vermittelt eine melancholische Stimmung. Der Song verkörpert eine etwas bekiffte Stimmung, wenn man das so ausdrücken kann. Auch wenn der Song eine gewisse Monotonie ausstrahlt, wo wird diese sehr geschickt ausgeschmückt. Hört sich ein wenig widersprüchlich an, aber es ist so. Der Song hat eine starke Anziehungskraft, die auch davon lebt, dass die Leadgitarre ein echtes Mitteilungsbedürfnis hat. Sie hat viel zu erzählen und es hört sich wahnsinnig gut an.

„Sirens“ dreht wieder am Energielevel, so dass der musikalische Puls mehr auf Touren kommt Der Song wirkt wieder lebendiger und dynamischer. Es scheint so, als ob auf „Faceless Man“ ein Wechselbad der Gefühle durchlebt wird. Es wird eine vielschichtige tiefsinnige Erfahrung geboten. Einerseits steht die Musik für einen kraftvollen aufputschenden Sound, aber es gibt auch die Phasen, welche transzendente Ebenen aufbauen, die den Hörer auf ganz eigene Weise gefangen nehmen. Der Titeltrack „Faceless Man“ ist ein gutes Beispiel, um dies zu verdeutlichen.

Der finale Track „Hippielort“ steckt den Finger nochmals in die Steckdose und kommt mit ordentlich Strom daher, so dass einem die Haare zu Berge stehen. Aber in über sieben Minuten Spielzeit schleichen sich auch hier psychodelische Eskapaden ein, und zwar genau auf der Hälfte. Ein instrumentaler Part mit einem unheimlich geilen Bass, der hier zur Geltung kommt. In Kombination mit den Gitarren entsteht ein wahrlich wunderbarer musikalischer Akt, der schließlich wieder in einen kraftvollen Rausch ausartet.

Fazit

FUSSKALT werden ihrem Namen nicht gerecht. Die Musik von FUSSKALT erhitzt vielmehr die Gemüter. Das gilt für ihre alten Songs genauso wie für die neuen. Der Sound hat sich etwas verändert, aber die Kraft und Dynamik ist geblieben, wurde jedoch durch psychodelische Ansätze und verspieltere Gitarrenarbeit ergänzt. Diese geben dem ganzen Sound noch eine zusätzliche atmosphärische Tiefgründigkeit. Die handwerkliche Darbietung ist zudem schlichtweg überragend und ist mit so viel Kunst umgesetzt, dass es immer wieder ein Genuß ist diese Songs zu hören.

There are band names that leave you wondering. This applies to the band FUSSKALT in two senses. On the one hand, the band name itself is already very bizarre and funny and therefore immediately conjures up a grin on your face. What would you expect musically from a band like FUSSKALT? I could have imagined many things, but I would have been so wrong with every idea. Because this band plays damn hot stoner rock with different influences and styles. Moreover, it gets even funnier when you consider the origin of this band. It’s not a German band, because FUSSKALT come from Denmark.

FUSSKALT are not new to the music business either, having released their first songs back in 2012. This article is actually about the current album “Faceless Man”, but I find the band’s musical history very interesting and would like to say a few words about the previous releases. Because I find the development interesting and remarkable. If you want to find out more about the guys, their unusual band name and their musical career, you should also read our interview.

And I didn’t expect the first songs released to be banging out of the speakers so strongly. It all started with the EP “Songs For Speedin‘ And Crashin‘ (vol.1)” in December 2012. There are three songs that sound so damn full and groovy that I can’t keep my body still. The craftsmanship is top-notch and at a high level. As soon as the song “Dead Man Walking” starts rolling, there’s no stopping it. This sound is simply irresistible. It gets straight into your blood and into your bones. This hot stoner desert rock definitely makes you thirsty for more. (The desire for a cold beer cannot be denied either). The songs don’t lose their fat groove even when things slow down. And singer Lars with his powerful, dirty voice fits the music perfectly. (Unfortunately, he later left the band during the Covid 19 crisis).

And check out the awesome solo on „When The Devil Comes (To Take You Home)“. When the guitar howls and breathes in the blues, I immediately get hot for playing air guitar. Super strong! The successor „Songs For Speedin‘ And Crashin‘ (vol.2)“ naturally follows the same soundtrack, in keeping with the title. With many horsepower under the hood, the songs hit the ground running.

FUSSKALT seem to be motorsport fans, because the EP „Overdrive“ also deals with this topic and the band has five songs under the hood. Here, for the first time, a facet comes to light that the band hadn’t really explored before. „Chasing Unicorns“ is ponderous and has a doomy touch. And „El Toro“ is also more steamroller than a fast 8-cylinder big block at first, but this changes in the course of the song when FUSSKALT accelerate the tempo. The fact is that FUSSKALT can also write songs that have turns and twists. „Sin City“ should also be mentioned here, where the band incorporates a calmer part that creates a cool mood in the song.

I now come to the album „Intercooler“ from 2018, which contains a total of seven songs. So you can see that the band is slowly increasing the number of songs. What has already been hinted at a little is being pursued further here. The songs are no longer so massive, but a little more finely created. Still with a good portion of groove, but no longer always with their heads through the wall, if you listen to the song „Musecifer“.

Sometimes I have the feeling (e.g. in the song „Falling Down“) that a hint of psychedelic components have also found their way in, allowing the listener to travel to another world. The hypnotic song „Falling Down“ or „Wrong Side Of Town“ are such journeys. Some would say that you could enjoy the songs better with a rolled bag of herbal substrates. „Son Of Man“ is then more reminiscent of the band’s beginnings and is another straightforward rock song. All in all, it’s a cool album that also shows a good development in terms of new ideas for the songs, but to be honest, the overall picture lacks a bit of the brute, wild energy from the early days.

Seven years later „Faceless Man“

Wow! That’s a long period of time. Yes, the damn COVID-19 crisis probably had something to do with it. Fortunately, FUSSKALT haven’t lapsed into rigor mortis, but are celebrating a great comeback with their new album „Faceless Man“. A lot happens in seven years, even to one person. Tastes may change and also the music.

But FUSSKALT remain true to themselves, even if the sound has changed somewhat. There is also a new man on the microphone, namely Niko. Niko is a worthy successor to Lars and does a great job. Therefore, it almost seems as if there weren’t seven years between „Faceless Man“ and the album „Intercooler“. The band has not lost its musically powerful presence, but is now more variable. There are five new songs on the album, with a playing time of around 30 minutes, as two songs easily exceed seven minutes. The cover artwork is also a premiere. It is the first time that the motif has nothing to do with engines or vehicles. Instead, it has a spiritual flair. And this is reflected in the songs.

For the most part, they have said goodbye to the offensive, massive style that still had a metal influence in the beginning. The songwriting has become considerably more progressive and multi-layered. The psychedelic touch has also been given even more weight. On the one hand, FUSSKALT focus on more atmosphere, but on the other hand they don’t lose the catchy riffs and the groove. The guitar playing is fantastic. The lead guitars provide a great feeling at all times and often breathe in the blues. Sometimes the sound reminds me of the band ‚Monster Magnet‘, whose album „Superjudge“ really got me back then and still does. A milestone for me. But now let’s hear what FUSSKALT have to offer in the year 2025.

When the opener „Fuzz Cult“ kicks in, you just can’t keep still. It sounds so damn cool and dirty when the first riffs burst in. Does anyone else know the band Monster Magnet? It gave me these vibes, even if FUSSKALT don’t sound quite as crazy. Basically, I like the earthy, grippy sound that was found here in the production. It just fits perfectly. And the guitars are constantly setting me on fire with feelings of happiness. I go into a frenzy when I listen to it. Even when I’m sober. What does it look like after drinking hop soda or other plants? Anyway…. let’s not go into that any further. The music alone can be intoxicating enough. So let’s move on.

„River Of Gold“ takes a more leisurely approach and conveys a melancholy mood. The song embodies a somewhat stoned mood, if you can put it that way. Even if the song radiates a certain monotony, it is very skillfully embellished. It sounds a little contradictory, but it is. The song has a strong appeal, which also lives from the fact that the lead guitar has a lot to say and it sounds insanely good.

„Sirens“ turns up the energy level again, so that the musical pulse gets more up to speed. The song seems livelier and more dynamic again. It seems as if „Faceless Man“ is a journey of emotions. A multi-layered, profound experience is offered. On the one hand, the music stands for a powerful, uplifting sound, but there are also phases that build up transcendental levels that captivate the listener in their very own way. The title track „Faceless Man“ is a good example to illustrate this.

The final track „Hippielort“ sticks its finger in the socket once again and comes along with a lot of electrifying power, making your hair stand on end. But in over seven minutes of playing time, psychedelic escapades creep in here too, exactly halfway through. An instrumental part with an incredibly cool bass that comes into its own here. In combination with the guitars, a truly wonderful musical act is created, which ultimately degenerates into a powerful frenzy.

Conclusion

FUSSKALT do not live up to their name. On the contrary, FUSSKALT’s music heats things up. This applies to their old songs as well as the new ones. The sound has changed a bit, but the power and dynamics have remained, but have been supplemented by psychedelic approaches and more playful guitar work. These give the whole sound an additional atmospheric depth. The technical performance is also simply outstanding and is realized with so much art that it is always a pleasure to listen to these songs.

Vermutlich werden viele Leser alleine aufgrund des Bandnamens neugierig geworden sein. Und das ist völlig nachvollziehbar. Es ist immer eine schwierige und zugleich höchst spannende Angelegenheit, wenn es um Ideen für einen Bandnamen geht. Ich möchte gar nicht wissen, wie lange manche Bands über verschiedenste Ideen brüten, bis man sich schlussendlich für einen Namen entschieden hat. Und manche Bandnamen sind wirklich einzigartig und so skurril, dass man alleine deswegen neugierig wird, was die Band musikalisch zu bieten hat.

FUSSKALT haben neben ihrem geilen Bandnamen auch heiße Musik zu bieten, nämlich feinsten Stoner Rock. Und deshalb freuen wir uns euch FUSSKALT in einem Interview vorstellen zu können. Gleichzeitig gibt es ein Review zu ihrem neuen Album „Faceless Man“, wo aber auch auf die alten Alben eingegangen wird. Dies wird heute Abend online gehen. MH: Hallo Nick! Willkommen zu unserem Interview.

FK: Hallo Metalheads – vielen Dank für die Einladung. Ich bin Nick (Gitarren), Gründungsmitglied der Band. Ich werde die Antworten geben, da ich es bin, der alle schmutzigen kleinen Geheimnisse kennt.

MH: Es gibt Bandnamen, über die man reden muss. Euer Bandname FUSSKALT ist sicherlich einer davon! Bitte erzählt uns, wie es zu diesem ungewöhnlichen Bandnamen kam!

FK: Kurze Geschichte: Es war ein Arbeitstitel, der schließlich hängen blieb.
Etwas längere Geschichte: Damals, als Fusskalt noch nicht Fusskalt war, sondern nur ich und ein Schlagzeuger, den ich von früher kannte, beschlossen, eine Band zu gründen, und in seiner Wohnung übten, hielten wir es offensichtlich für viel wichtiger, einen Namen zu haben, als unseren ersten Song zu schreiben. Jetzt erinnere ich mich, dass es in seiner Wohnung ein bisschen fusskalt war, und ja – während die Dänen ein entsprechendes Wort dafür haben (fodkoldt), glaube ich nicht, dass die englische Sprache so etwas bietet. Info für die Englischsprachigen: Es bedeutet, dass es im Haus nicht kalt genug ist, dass man ein Sweatshirt anzieht, aber kalt genug, dass man seine Hausschuhe anzieht.

Aber wie auch immer – da ich zum Teil aus Deutschland stamme, und im Zusammenhang mit der Temperatur in seiner Wohnung, denke ich, dass das Wort ‚Fusskalt‘ schnell auf den Tisch kam, und nicht allzu lange danach entwarf ich das ursprüngliche Logo (das nun von dem unglaublich talentierten Eli Quinn überarbeitet wurde, der sowohl das Intercooler-Cover als auch Faceless Man gestaltet hat).
Der Name Fusskalt sollte nie endgültig sein, aber dann dachten wir uns: „Hey, unsere Helden von der schwedischen Band Mustasch haben einen Weg gefunden, einen unprätentiösen Namen zu haben, warum können wir also nicht für immer Fusskalt sein?
Außerdem waren alle guten Namen mit „Wizard“ schon vergeben…
Und so kam es dann…

MH: Ihr seid keine Anfänger, denn eure Band gibt es schon ziemlich lange. Ihr habt 2012 eure erste EP veröffentlicht. Und die klingt auch schon so, als wären da keine Anfänger am Werk. Wie viel musikalische Erfahrung hattet ihr damals schon?

Wir kommen alle aus früheren Bandkonstellationen in verschiedenen Genres.
Ich habe früher in einer Band namens Frozen Sun gespielt (nein, nicht die holländische Band, die früher als Donor bekannt war und unseren Namen geklaut hat). Wir spielten eine Mischung aus Death Metal, Grindcore, Thrash und was immer wir für passend hielten. Ich hatte auch ein lustiges Nebenprojekt mit dem anderen Gitarristen von Frozen Sun und ein paar ehemaligen Illdisposed-Mitgliedern und einem guten Freund am Gesang. Wir nannten es „Angel Accelerator Death“. Wir haben nur ein Demotape veröffentlicht und waren auf einer Single-Compilation-CD mit anderen dänischen Bands vertreten. Ich glaube, aus AAD wurde schließlich so etwas wie Panzerchrist.

Janus war in einer Hardcore-Band namens Barcode, und ich glaube, er hat auch in einer Grunge-Band gespielt, damals, als er noch Haare auf dem Kopf hatte und nicht nur um sein Gesicht herum.
Thomas war in der kultigen dänischen Thrash-Band Crionic, vor gaaaaanz langer Zeit. Und wenn ich sage gaaaaanz früher, dann nur, um zu betonen, dass er Fusskalts Opa ist.
Niko war in einer Band namens Torn – vielleicht etwas anderes?
Und Jonas hat in mehreren Bands gespielt, von Grunge bis Acid Jazz, Garden Refuse und Rostock, um nur einige zu nennen.

MH: Wenn man sich Eure Diskografie ansieht, wird deutlich, dass Ihr offensichtlich Fans des Motorsports sind. Wie stark ist das bei euch ausgeprägt?

FK: Das liegt wahrscheinlich hauptsächlich an mir. Und es ist nicht wirklich so extrem ausgeprägt. Aber ich liebe Autos – vor allem alte aus den 50-80er Jahren, und ich habe die Jungs im Laufe der Jahre zu ein paar Motorsportveranstaltungen mitgeschleppt. Einmal bekamen wir die Chance, einen Song für das Werbevideo eines dänischen Rennfahrers zu liefern – ich glaube, wir haben den Text von „Drive“ ein wenig verändert, und das wurde dann der Soundtrack. Das war ziemlich cool.
Ich glaube, Janus steht mehr auf Fußball, Jonas und Niko stehen auf Skateboarding, und ich glaube, Thomas spielt gerne Canasta… ist das ein Sport?

MH: Was sind Eure Lieblingssongs von den alten Alben? Spielt ihr sie immer noch gerne?

Das ist schwierig. Ich glaube, wir haben alle unterschiedliche Favoriten. Kürzlich haben wir wieder angefangen, „Eleanor“ zu proben, weil wir dachten, dass wir es vielleicht in unser aktuelles Live-Set aufnehmen könnten, aber dann haben wir bei ein paar Konzerten so tolles Feedback auf unser Set bekommen, dass wir beschlossen haben, es doch nicht zu ändern.

Einer der wirklich alten Songs, die wir fast immer spielen, ist „Dead man walking“.
Dieser Song war ein entscheidender Moment für uns. Es war der eine Song, der uns Richtung, Vision und Identität gab. Das war das erste Mal, dass wir uns alle bei den Bandproben ansahen und sagten: „Fuck yeah – DAS ist es, was wir tun sollen“. Dieser Song hat also einen besonderen Platz in unseren Herzen, ganz klar.

Aber im Allgemeinen spielen wir ein bisschen von fast allen Veröffentlichungen in unserem aktuellen Set. Und das fühlt sich wirklich gut an. Die alten Songs machen immer noch Spaß, weil wir sie auswendig kennen und sie einen guten Fluss und ein gutes Gefühl haben.

MH: Nach 2018 gab es eine lange Pause bis zur aktuellen Veröffentlichung. Was war passiert? Ich nehme an, dass die COVID-19-Krise ein Teil der Ursache war, richtig?

FK: Ja! COVID hat uns hart getroffen. Vor allem für uns, denn Lars (Gesang) entschied sich schließlich, die Band zu verlassen, um sich mehr auf die Familie zu konzentrieren, was wir natürlich total respektierten und nicht übel nahmen, aber es ließ uns trotzdem im Kielwasser von COVID zurück, wo alles langsamer geworden war, ohne dass jemand das Mikrofon in der Hand hielt. Also haben wir natürlich einige Zeit damit verbracht, nach dem richtigen Match zu suchen. Es hat eine Weile gedauert und ein paar Versuche, aber schließlich haben wir Niko gefunden. Und er ist so ein Geschenk für die Band – besonders nachdem wir die Chance hatten, mit ihm auf der Bühne zu stehen und seine Präsenz zu erleben. Jepp – er ist ein Volltreffer.

MH: Euer Sound hat sich im Laufe der Jahre ein wenig verändert. Die ersten Songs waren Old School, hatten einen massiven Punch und eine Menge Groove auf Lager. Mit der Zeit wurden die Songs etwas komplexer, hatten ruhigere Passagen und manchmal auch einen psychedelischen Touch.  Aber der Groove ist immer noch da und die Gitarrenarbeit zeigt eine Menge Raffinesse und Spielfreude. Das Cover-Artwork hat zum ersten Mal keinen Bezug zu Motoren und bietet einen völlig neuen Stil.

Wie würdet Ihr Eure musikalische Entwicklung beschreiben? Was sind die Unterschiede zu den ersten Veröffentlichungen und woher kam der Anstoß für den „neuen“ Sound?

FK: Eine ausgezeichnete Frage. Vielen Dank dafür. Nun, seit der „Erleuchtung“ von „Dead man walking“ haben wir versucht, tiefer und tiefer in die vielen Aspekte des Stoner Rock einzutauchen – immer neugierig auf das, was es da draußen gibt (und es ist ein Sammelsurium). Das hat unsere musikalische Entwicklung natürlich stark beeinflusst. Gleichzeitig schöpfen wir aus den Ressourcen von 5 verschiedenen Individuen mit unterschiedlichen musikalischen Hintergründen – es ist also eine gute Mischung aus Ideen und Input.

Was die Produktion angeht, so arbeiten wir seit vielen Jahren (und Veröffentlichungen) mit demselben Produzenten zusammen. Bis (und einschließlich) „Overdrive“ war Henrik Hjortnæs das „6. Mitglied von Fusskalt“. Er hat alle Produktionen, den Mix und das Mastering gemacht. Und er hat uns immer besser klingen lassen, als wir es für möglich hielten. Seine Herangehensweise war ein eher druckvoller Rock/Metal-Sound, und wir mussten immer ein bisschen mit ihm kämpfen, um es ein bisschen dreckig zu machen. Aber wir hätten uns in unseren Anfangsjahren keinen besseren Co-Piloten wünschen können.

Bei „Intercooler“ hat Henrik wieder produziert, aber die Aufgabe des Mixens/Masterns abgelehnt, also haben wir es zur Disposition gestellt und die Tracks von 3 verschiedenen Leuten testmischen lassen. Alle 3 hatten großartige Vorstellungen von unserem Sound für diese Veröffentlichung, und einer von ihnen, Stefan (der für seine Rollen in zahlreichen dänischen Stoner/Psych-Bands bekannt ist), hatte einen wirklich interessanten Ansatz für unsere Musik. Ich fand es wirklich toll, wie er uns „gehört“ hat, und einige seiner kreativen Ansätze waren großartig. Letztendlich haben wir uns aber für einen anderen Typen, René (Beneath the Silence), entschieden, wahrscheinlich weil sein Mix näher an dem war, was wir von „Overdrive“ kannten – es fühlte sich sicherer an. Wir waren zu diesem Zeitpunkt noch nicht bereit für Stefans Vision.

Später haben wir eine andere Produktion von ihm gehört, mit unseren Freunden von „Stone Cadaver“, und er hat meiner Meinung nach einen fantastischen Job gemacht. Ich liebe es, wie er sie auf diesem Album klingen ließ.
Ich denke noch heute darüber nach, was wäre gewesen, wenn wir damals mit Stefan gearbeitet hätten“.

Spulen wir vor zu „Faceless Man“. In den Jahren mit Henrik hatten wir so viel Studio-/Produktionswissen aufgesaugt, dass wir dachten, wir versuchen es mal alleine. Also hat Jonas seine Schlagzeugspuren selbst aufgenommen und vorbereitet, basierend auf lausigen Cue-Tracks – Thomas hat sich selbst und Janus aufgenommen – und ich habe mich selbst und Niko aufgenommen – und schließlich habe ich alles zusammengefügt, Testmixe gemacht und für den Versand zum externen Mix/Mastering fertiggestellt. Die Frage war nur… wer?

Durch Zufall stieß Janus auf Kent Stump (Wo Fat), der seine Mix-/Mastering-Dienste in den Crystal Clear Sound-Studios anbot. Und mit der Stefan-Geschichte im Hinterkopf war die Wahl, glaube ich, recht schnell getroffen: Diesmal wollten wir jemanden, der sich in der Szene auskennt, also haben wir uns für Kent entschieden, und Junge, er hat geliefert. Es ist alles, was wir uns erhofft hatten. Eine satte und warme Produktion mit viel Fuzz und Dreck – aber gleichzeitig mit großem Respekt vor unseren druckvollen und dynamischen Parts. 10/10 würde es wieder tun.

Was das Cover angeht, haben Sie recht. Keine Autos oder etwas in der Art. Ich glaube, alle Songs drehen sich auf die eine oder andere Weise um die menschliche Psyche. Wie wir manchmal den Trivialitäten entfliehen wollen – was Menschen tun, wenn sie an ihre Grenzen stoßen, oder wenn andere Menschen sie im Stich lassen – und wie wir ständig mit Glauben und Überzeugungen gefüttert werden. Letztlich geht es im Titeltrack „Faceless Man“ um Flucht, und zwar durch Drogenmissbrauch.

Wir traten an Eli Quinn mit der Idee eines anonymen „Drogendealers“ in Form eines Raumfahrers heran, der einen Haufen verlorener Seelen intubiert und sie mit einem kontinuierlichen Strom von Drogen versorgt. Eli hat diese Idee aufgegriffen und sie so umgesetzt, wie nur er es kann. Ich glaube nicht, dass es auf eine andere Art und Weise präsentiert werden könnte oder sollte. Er hat einen fantastischen Job gemacht, und es fühlt sich genau richtig an für die Songs.

MH: Was sind Ihre Pläne für die Zukunft? Wollt ihr wieder voll durchstarten? Wie sieht es mit Auftritten aus? Wo können wir euch live sehen?

Wir wollen die Räder unbedingt wieder in Schwung bringen. Derzeit haben wir für den Herbst ein oder zwei Auftritte geplant oder in Planung. Weitere werden sicher folgen, aber es ist natürlich immer ein Spagat zwischen Arbeit und Familie. Außerdem scheint es so, dass seit COVID vor allem das Touren sehr viel teurer geworden ist – sogar in einem Maße, dass etablierte Bands kaum noch über die Runden kommen. Fürs Erste werden wir wahrscheinlich anfangen, etwas Live-Ausdauer und Reputation aufzubauen, wann immer wir die Gelegenheit dazu bekommen, aber wer weiß, was die Zukunft für uns bereithält.

It is always a difficult and at the same time extremely exciting matter when it comes to ideas for a band name. I don’t even want to know how long some bands brood over different ideas until they finally decide on a name. And some band names are really unique and so bizarre that you become curious about what the band has to offer musically.

In addition to their awesome band name, FUSSKALT also have hot music to offer. And that’s why we’re pleased to be able to introduce FUSSKALT to you in an interview. At the same time, there is a review of their new album „Faceless Man“, which also covers the old albums. This will go online this evening. Nick, guitarist and founding member, took the time for our interview. Have fun!

MH: Hello guys from FUSSKALT! Welcome to our interview.

FK: Hey Metal-heads – thank you so much for inviting us to do this. I’m Nick (guitars), founding member of the band. I’ll be doing the answers since it’s me who know all the dirty little secrets.

MH: There are band names that need to be talked about. Your band name FUSSKALT is certainly one of them! Please tell us how this unusual band name came about!

Short story: It was a working title, that eventually stuck.
Bit longer story: Back when Fusskalt was not yet Fusskalt but just me and a drummer I knew from way back, deciding to start a band, and practicing in his appartment, we obviously thought it was way more important to have a name, than actually putting our first song together. Now I remember it being a bit fusskalt in his apartment, and yes – while the danes have an equivalent word for this (fodkoldt), I don’t think the english language offers anything of the sorts. Service info for the english speaking: It means when it’s not cold enough in your house, that you put on a sweatshirt, but cold enough that you put on your slippers.

But anyways – given my part german heritage, and in the context of the temperature in his apartment, I think the word fusskalt quickly came on the table, and not too long after, I designed the original logo (which has now been given a make-over by the incredibly talented Eli Quinn, who did both the Intercooler cover, as well as Faceless Man).
The name Fusskalt was never meant to be final, but then we thought „Hey, our heroes in swedish band Mustasch got a way with having an unpretentious name, so why can’t we be Fusskalt forever?“
Also – all good names with „Wizard“ were already taken…
And such it came to be…

MH: You are not beginners, because your band has been around for quite a long time. You released your first EP in 2012. And this one also sounds as if no beginners were playing there. How much musical experience did you already have back then?

We all come from previous band constellations in different genres.
I used to play in a band called Frozen Sun (no, not the dutch band formerly known as Donor, who stole our name). We played blend of death metal, grindcore, thrash and whatever we thought fit in. I also had a fun side-project with the other guitarist from Frozen sun and a couple of former Illdisposed-members and a good friend on vocals. We called it „Angel Accelerator Death“ Only released a demo tape and was featured on a single compilation CD with other danish bands. I think AAD eventually turned into what was to become Panzerchrist.
Janus was in a hardcore bands called Barcode, and I think he also played in some grunge band, back when he still had hair on top of his head, and not just around his face.
Thomas was in iconic danish thrash act, Crionic, waaaaaay back in the day. And when I say waaaaaay back, it’s just to emphasize that he is Fusskalt’s grandpa.
Niko was in a band called Torn – maybe something else?
And Jonas has been in several bands, ranging from grunge to acid jazz, Garden Refuse and Rostock to name a few.

MH: Looking at your discography, it’s clear that you are obviously fans of motorsport. How pronounced is that for you?

That’s probably mostly on my part. And it’s not really that outspoken. But I love cars – mostly old ones from 50-80’s, and I’ve dragged the boys to a few motorsport events over the years. At one point we got the chance to supply a song to a danish race car driver’s promotional/track video – so I think we made a few modifications to the lyrics of „Drive“, and then that became the soundtrack. That was pretty cool.
With that said, I think Janus is more into soccer, Jonas and Niko are way into skate boarding, and I think Thomas likes to play Canasta… is that a sport?

MH: What are your favorite songs from the old albums? Do you still like playing them?

That’s difficult. I think we all have different favorites. Recently we started rehearsing „Eleanor“ again, as we thought we could maybe add it to our current live set, but then we had such great feedback on our set over a couple of concerts, that we decided to not change it after all.
One of the really old ones we almost always play though, is „Dead man walking“.
That song was a defining moment for us. It was the one song that gave us direction, vision and identity. That was the first time we all looked at each other in band practice, going „Fuck yeah – THIS is what we’re meant to do“. So that particular song holds a special place in our hearts, for sure.
But generally speaking we play a little bit of almost all releases in our current set. And that feels really good. The old songs are really fun to play still, because we know them by heart, so they have a really good flow and feel.

MH: After 2018, there was a long break until the current release. What had happened? I assume that the COVID-19 crisis was part of the cause, right?

FK: Yeah – COVID hit hard. For us especially, because Lars (vocals) eventually decided to quit the band to focus more on family, which we obviously totally respected and had no hard feelings about, but it still left us in the wake of COVID, where everything had slowed down, with no one holding the microphone. So we obviously spent some time searching for the right match. It took a while and a few tries, but eventually we landed Niko. And he is such a gift to the band – especially after we’ve had the chance to be on stage with him, and experience his presence. Yep – he’s a keeper.

MH: Your sound has changed a bit over the years. The first songs were old school, had a massive punch and a lot of groove in stock. Over time, the songs became a bit more complex, had quieter passages and sometimes had a psychedelic touch.  But the groove is still there and the guitar work shows a lot of sophistication and joy of playing. For the first time, the cover artwork has no reference to motors and offers a complete new style.

How would you describe your musical development? What are the differences to the first releases and where did the impetus for the „new“ sound come from?

FK: An excellent question. Thank you. Well ever since the „epiphany“ of „Dead man walking“, we tried to delve deeper and deeper into the many aspects of stoner rock – always curious on what’s out there (and it’s a smorgasbord). This has obviously influenced our musical development a lot in itself. At the same time, we’re pulling resources of 5 different individuals with different musical backgrounds – so it’s also bound to be a good mix of ideas and input.

Now production wise, we’ve worked with the same producer for many years (and releases). Up until (and including) „Overdrive“, Henrik Hjortnæs was the „6th member of Fusskalt“. He did all the productions, mix and mastering. And he always made us sound better than we thought possible. His approach was a more punchy rock/metal vibe, and we always had to fight him a little to get it a bit dirty. But we could not have asked for a better co-pilot during our early years.

On „Intercooler“, Henrik once again produced, but declined the mix/mastering task, so we put it up for grabs, and had tracks test-mixed by 3 different guys. All 3 had some great takes on our sound for this release, and one guy, Stefan (who’s famously known for his roles in numerous danish stoner/psych bands) had a really interesting approach to our music. I actually loved how he „heard us“ and some of his more creative approaches were great. In the end though, we went with another guy, René (Beneath the Silence), most likely because his mix was closer to what we knew from „Overdrive“ – it felt safer. We weren’t ready for Stefans vision at that time.

We later heard another production of his, with our friends in „Stone cadaver“, and he did a fantastic job in my book. I love how he made them sound on that album.
I still have that lingering thought today, „what if we went with Stefan back then“?
Fast forward to „Faceless Man“. During the years with Henrik, we had sucked up so much studio/production knowledge that we thought we’d give it a shot on our own. So Jonas has recorded and prepared his drum tracks on his own, based on crummy cue tracks – Thomas has recorded himself and Janus – and I have recorded myself and Niko – and finally I’ve put it all together, made test mixes and finalized for send-off to external mix/mastering. Question was just… who?

By coincidence, Janus came across Kent Stump (Wo Fat) who was offering his mix/mastering services out of Crystal Clear Sound studios. And with the Stefan story in the back of our heads, I think the choice was made rather quickly: This time we wanted someone who was deep into the scene, so we jumped on Kent, and boy did he deliver. It’s everything we had hoped it could be. Rich and warm production, loaded with fuzz and dirt – but at the same time with huge respect to our punchy and more dynamic parts. 10/10 would do it again.

Cover-wise you’re right. No cars or anything of the sort. I think all of the songs revolve around the human psyche in one way or the other. How we want to escape the trivialities sometimes – what people do when they’re pushed to the limit, or when other people fail them – and how we’re constantly force-fed beliefs and convictions. Ultimately the title track “Faceless Man” is about escaping, by substance abuse. We approached Eli Quinn with the idea of this anonymous “drug dealer” in form of a space man, intubating a bunch of lost souls and infusing them with a continuous flow of drugs. So – Eli took that idea and ran with it, like only he can. I don’t think it could or should be presented in any other way. He did an amazing job, and it feels just right for the songs.

MH: What are your plans for the future? Do you want to hit the ground running again? What about gigs? Where could we see you live?

We absolutely want to get the wheels spinning again. Currently we have one or two gigs planned or in planning for autumn. More will surely follow, but it’s of course always a balance with work and family life. Also since COVID, it seems like especially touring has become much more expensive – even to the degree where established bands are finding it hard to make ends meet. For now we’ll probably start building up some live stamina and reputation, whenever we get the chance, but who knows what the future has in store for us.

Baroness und Graveyard – die Tourdaten

Das aktuelle Album „Mind Burns Alive“ von Pallbearer ist dieses Jahr im Mai bei Nuclear Blast erschienen. Das letzte und sechste Album von Graveyard ebenfalls. Allerdings liegt das schon über ein Jahr zurück. Aber vielleicht servieren uns die Schweden ja live schon einen neuen Song… Wichtiger Hinweis: In Köln und München wurden die Venues geändert. Auf dem atMOERSphere spielt ein guter Mix aus Bands des Genres. Unter den auftretenden Bands ist auch Smokemaster aus Köln. Die fünfköpfige Band vereint Stoner Rock, Psychedelic und Blues zu einem breiten musikalischen Spektrum. Ihre Musik ist tanzbar und intuitiv. Und voll von den Sounds der 60er und 70er Jahre. Die meiste Aufmerksamkeit erregte die Band mit einem Auftritt beim WDR Crossroads-Festival, dem hauseigenen Festival des WDR-Rockpalasts.

Purple Dawn, ein Kölner Trio, hat sich seit ihrer Gründung im Jahr 2020 schnell zu einem Geheimtipp der Szene entwickelt. Die Band hat bereits 2022 auf dem Freak Valley Festival gezeigt, dass ihre Musik auf ganz großen Bühnen gehört.

atMOERSphere Stonerock Festival: Auch Bands aus Moers vertreten

Auch Bands aus Moers sind vertreten und geben ein Heimspiel. Sleeping Green spielen seit 2011 einen Mix aus Stoner und Doom.

Die vierköpfige Besatzung vom Soundschiff OTHO ist ganz frisch auf der Erde gelandet. Die Band will das Publikum mit ihren sphärischen und experimentellen Sound-Collagen in den musikalischen Orbit schießen.

Heavy Dirty Rock

Eine coole Rock-Scheibe hat dann doch noch den Weg zu mir gefunden. Die Kultrocker CIRCLE CREEK (Facebook/Homepage) aus Österreich haben im August ihr neues Album „The World Is On Fire“ rausgefeuert. Die Geschichte der Band reicht bis in die 80’er Jahre zurück und wurde von den Zwillingen Christian & Didier Zirkelbach gegründet. Recht schnell waren sie schon damals als Live-Band sehr gefragt und haben die Bühnen mit Größen wie SCORPIONS oder STATUS QUO gerockt. Da darf man ja schon mal einiges erwarten.

Coolness

Man merkt den Jungs den Spaß an der Sache an. Die Musik kommt frech und lässig rüber. Dabei schwimmt auch gerne mal eine saftige Portion Humor bzw. Sarkasmus mit. So versprüht der flotte Opener „D.R.U.G.S.“ direkt gute Vibes und lässt das Rockherz höher schlagen. Der Coolnessfaktor ist echt hoch. Und das sich zudem noch eine sexy Frauenstimme ins Ohr schmeichelt, ist ein schönes zusätzliches Gimmick.

Apropos Sexiness…. Das Video zum Song „Tell Me Baby“ hat davon auch optisch einiges zu bieten, aber Vorsicht! Das toll in Szene gesetzte Video und der Song haben eine überraschende bitterböse Wendung parat. Der Song haut Euch zwischendurch fette Riffs um die Ohren und die lassen in der ansonsten lockeren Atmosphäre eine agressive bedrohliche Stimmung aufkommen.

Ernste Themen, schmutziger Rock’n Roll

CIRCLE CREEK impfen ihren Sound immer mal wieder mit coolen Ideen, die Pepp in das Ganze bringen. Beim Song „Peppers“ gibt es einen ausgedehnten Instrumentalpart, der von einem krachenden Drumsolo in ein langsam gespieltes Gitarrensolo übergeht, um dann wieder in den lockerne Kick-Ass-Chorus zu wechseln.

Was man vermutlich gar nicht von so einer Band erwarten würde, ist ein 9 minütiger Song! „Forever“ ist der langsam getragene Track, der mit seiner düsteren melancholischen Art durchaus zu unterhalten weiß. In die erzählerisch gehaltenen ruhigen Parts mischen sich rifflastige Ausbrüche und ausgiebige Solos. Lediglich hätte man meiner Meinung nach die ersten fünf Minuten des Songs ein wenig kürzer halten können. So wäre die erste Hälfte weniger zäh und der gesamte Song kurzweiliger geworden. Trotzdem mag ich den nachdenklichen Song mit seinem ganz eigenen rauen Charme.

Wo man jetzt schön gechillt ist, kommt mit dem Song „Creatures“ ein Tritt in den Arsch. Die Jungs treten ordentlich auf das Gaspedal, so dass Euch hier ein verdammt rasanter Rocker mitnimmt und mit seiner Craziness gute Laune verbreitet. „On My Own“ spielt wieder mit Gegensätzlichkeiten. Melancholische depressiv wirkende Parts duellieren sich mit aufrüttelnden energischen Attacken.

Walgesänge

leiten den Song „Killing Industries“ ein. Ungewöhnlich für so ein Album und von daher überrascht es natürlich! Langsam mischen sich seichte Gitarrenklänge darunter. Es folgt ein knackiger Bass und zunächst verhaltene Drums. Doch die fetzigen anklagenden Momente bleiben nicht aus. Der Song entwickelt sogar noch einen treibenden Groove. Der Song ist ganz klar ein besonderes Highlight für mich auf diesem Album. Und eine eindringliche warnende Botschaft hat er außerdem noch parat.

Fazit

CIRCLE CREEK ist mit „The World Is On Fire“ ein echt cooles Rock’n Roll Album gelungen, welches ernste Themen mit einer schmutzigen fetzigen Portion Craziness anpackt. Eine melancholische Seite schwingt manchmal mit, aber es bleibt trotzdem ein lebendiges unterhaltsames Album.

Heavy Dirty Rock

A cool rock record has found its way to me after all. The cult rockers CIRCLE CREEK (Facebook/Homepage) from Austria released their new album „The World Is On Fire“ in August. The history of the band goes back to the 80’s and was founded by the twins Christian & Didier Zirkelbach. Already back then they were very popular as a live band and rocked the stages with greats like SCORPIONS or STATUS QUO. So let’s hear what they have to offer us now.

Coolness

One can hear that the guys are having fun. The music comes across cheeky and casual. Also you can recognize partly a portion of humor or sarcasm floats along in the lyrics. Therefore the snappy opener „D.R.U.G.S.“ sprays directly good vibes and makes the rock heart beat faster. The coolness factor is really high. And this sexy woman’s voice is a nice additional gimmick that I like.

Speaking of sexiness…. The video for the song „Tell Me Baby“ has a lot to offer visually, but beware! This great staged video and the song have a surprising bitter-bitter twist ready. The song hits you in between fat riffs around the ears and they let in the otherwise relaxed atmosphere an aggressive threatening mood arise.

Serious topics, dirty rock’n roll

CIRCLE CREEK inoculate their sound every now and then with cool ideas that bring pep into the whole. In the song „Peppers“ there is an extended instrumental part, which changes from a crashing drum solo into a guitar solo, to then change back into the loose kick-ass chorus.

What you probably wouldn’t expect from such a band is a 9 minute song! „Forever“ is the slowly carried track, which knows how to entertain with its gloomy melancholic nature. In the narratively held quiet parts mix riff-heavy outbreaks and extensive solos. Only in my opinion, the first five minutes of the song could have been kept a little shorter. So the first half would have been less chewy and the whole song more exciting. Nevertheless, I like the thoughtful song with its very own rough charm.

Where you are now chilled, you get a huge kick in the ass with the song „Creatures“ a kick in the ass. The guys step properly on the gas pedal, so that here a damn fast rocker takes you along and spreads good mood with its craziness. „On My Own“ plays with contrasts again. Melancholic depressive parts duel with stirring energetic attacks.

introduce the song „Killing Industries“. Unusual for such an album and therefore it surprises of course! Slowly, shallow guitar sounds mix in. This is followed by a crisp bass and initially restrained drums. But the shredding accusatory moments are not missing. The song even develops a driving groove. The song is clearly a special highlight for me on this album. And it also has an insistent warning message.

Conclusion

CIRCLE CREEK has succeeded with „The World Is On Fire“ a really cool Rock’n Roll album, which tackles serious topics with a dirty groovy portion of craziness. But a melancholic side resonates as well. So it remains a an entertaining album.

Stoner Power Metal

FIERCE DEITY hat mich letztes Jahr mit seinen Single-Veröffentlichungen begeistert. Hinter FIERCE DEITY steckt ein wahnsinnig ambitionierter Musik namens Jonathon Barwick. Er stammt aus dem idyllischen Städtchen Hobart in Tasmanien (Australien). Aus gegebenem Anlass war es mal wieder Zeit in paar Worte zu wechseln. Also viel Spaß mit unserem Interview bei `metal-heads.de´!

MH: Hallo Jonathon. Im vergangenen Dezember 2020 hatten wir das Vergnügen, Dich über Deine Arbeit mit FIERCE DEITY zu interviewen ( Interview Dez 2020 ). Natürlich haben wir auch über Deine Pläne für die Zukunft gesprochen. Nun ist einige Zeit vergangen und es ist viel passiert.

Idylle Tasmanien

MH: Wie geht es Dir im Moment? Geht es Dir gut?

J.B.: Ja, es geht mir sehr gut! Es ist schön, den Zielen, die ich mir gesetzt habe, näher zu kommen.

MH: Du scheinst ein Dauergast bei `metal-heads.de‘ zu werden. Daher wäre es schön, wenn die Leser nach und nach ein wenig mehr über die Person Jonathon Barwick erfahren würden, die hinter FIERCE DEITY steckt. Im letzten Interview haben wir erfahren, dass Du aus Tasmanien in Australien kommst, genauer gesagt aus der kleinen Stadt Hobart. Wie stellt sich das Leben dort dar?

J.B.: Hobart ist ein einzigartiger und wunderbarer Ort. Jeder, der es besucht, findet seinen eigenen Weg, sich in die Stadt zu verlieben. Es ist ein einfaches Leben hier – kalt im Winter, warm im Sommer. Ich denke, die Abgeschiedenheit von der großen weiten Welt lässt Raum für kreative Gedanken.

Skurriles Festival zur Wintersonnenwende

MH: Gibt es vielleicht auch eine Art verrückte Tradition in Tasmanien? Was ist typisch tasmanisch?

J.B.: Es gibt hier einige tolle Festivals! Im Winter haben wir ein heidnisches Festival namens Dark Mofo (Facebook ) – im besten Fall ist es sehr interessant, im schlimmsten Fall ist es einfach nur schräg. Ich würde nicht sagen, dass wir verrückte Traditionen oder so etwas haben, aber wir haben einige erstaunliche Brauereien hier!

Begegnungen der besonderen Art

MH: Australien ist auch für seine gefährlichen tierischen Bewohner bekannt. Was war Deine gefährlichste oder ungewöhnlichste Tierbegegnung?

J.B.: Ich bin auf einem ziemlich wilden Grundstück weit weg von der Stadt aufgewachsen, also habe ich meinen Anteil an Spinnen und Schlangen getroffen! Die meisten Spinnen sind ziemlich harmlos, aber die, die es nicht sind, sind es definitiv nicht. Was Schlangen angeht, muss man an heißen Tagen aufpassen, wenn man sich im hohen Gras aufhält. Meine Mutter fand einmal zwei männliche Tigerschlangen in unserem Garten, die sich um ein Weibchen stritten – sie waren unglaublich bösartig. Mein Großvater hat sie beide mit seinem Spazierstock getötet. Man sollte sie nicht in der Nähe von Kindern und Tieren haben.

Beginn der Reise

MH: Aber kommen wir zurück zum Wichtigsten, der Musik. Du hattest eine Reihe von Singles veröffentlicht. Sie begann mit „The Path“ und endete mit „A Ballad Of Heartbreak And Despair“. Die Songs handelten von einem Mann auf einer Reise. Du nanntest ihn „The Traveller“. Auch wenn ich alle Songs mochte, fand ich die letzte Single „A Ballad Of Heartbreak And Despair“ herausragend.
Wie sehen das Deine Fans? Was war Eure bisher erfolgreichste Single?

J.B.: Ich denke, eine Zeit lang Singles zu veröffentlichen war ein guter Weg, um Leute zu finden – die Fans haben den einen oder anderen Song angenommen und denken alle ein bisschen anders über FIERCE DEITY. „A Ballad of Heartbreak and Despair“ war auf jeden Fall ein Versuch, aus meiner Komfortzone herauszutreten und das zu tun, was ich tun möchte, und von da aus werde ich mich nun noch weiter vorwagen. Ich bin mir nicht sicher, was am erfolgreichsten war – an diesem Punkt in meinem Leben ist schon die Veröffentlichung eines Songs ein Erfolg!

Scheiss auf den Job!

MH: Letztes Jahr hattest Du erklärt, dass Du Deinen Job aufgeben würdest, um dich ganz der Musik zu widmen und damit Deinen Lebensunterhalt zu verdienen. Hast Du das Ziel bereits erreicht oder auf welche Weise bist Du diesem Ziel näher gekommen?

J.B.: Die beste Entscheidung, die ich je getroffen habe! Wenn man sich entscheidet, alles zu tun, um seine Kunst zu verfolgen, wird einem klar, dass es keine Ziellinie gibt – es ist nur ein Kampf, um sich selbst zu erhalten, damit man weiterhin seine Arbeit produzieren kann. Alles, was ich mache, ist für die nächste Platte. Ich möchte immer an einer Platte arbeiten, bis es Zeit ist zu gehen.

Das Überraschungsalbum „The Path: UnMasked“

MH: Du hast kürzlich ein Album veröffentlicht und mich damit sehr überrascht. Denn Du hast alle Deine bisherigen Songs unplugged überarbeitet oder wie Du es genannt hast: UnMasked!
War das eine spontane Idee oder wie ist es dazu gekommen? Warum hast Du das gemacht?

J.B.: Ja, definitiv eine spontane Idee! In einem Interview letztes Jahr habe ich die kühne Behauptung aufgestellt, dass gute Metal-Bands Songs schreiben und schlechte Metal-Bands Metal-Songs schreiben. „UnMasked“ ist meine Aussage, dass ich Songs schreibe.

MH: Man verbringt viel Zeit damit, alle Instrumente zu einem Ganzen zu vereinen, dem Song eine bestimmte Stimmung und eine Aussage zu geben. Und plötzlich ist da nur noch die Akustikgitarre.
Wie geht man so etwas an, wenn man nur eine akustische Gitarre zum Spielen hat?

J.B.: Es war eine große Herausforderung, herauszufinden, wie man die Songs nur mit den Basics zum Laufen bringen kann! Ich musste ihren Groove in verschiedenen Genres suchen und ich bin wirklich glücklich damit, wie es herauskam. Ich hatte vor, eine große PR-Kampagne für die Veröffentlichung zu machen, aber stattdessen habe ich die Songs für sich sprechen lassen und es einfach veröffentlicht.

Geh deinen Weg!

MH: Jeder, der Dir auf Facebook oder sogar Patreon folgt, weiß, was Du in der Zwischenzeit gemacht hast. Du teilst auf Patreon exklusive Inhalte mit Ihren Fans, die dort Ihre musikalischen Aktivitäten verfolgen können. Du hast aktuell diesen Fans die Möglichkeit gegeben, in Dein neues Album „Power Wisdom Courage“ vor der eigentlichen Veröffentlichung hineinzuhören.

Von dieser Möglichkeit habe ich auch Gebrauch gemacht. Es ist ein ungewöhnliches Album, denn das Album besteht nur aus drei Songs. Allerdings ist anzumerken, dass die einzelnen Songs eine immense Spielzeit haben, so dass die Spielzeit letztendlich über 30 Minuten beträgt. Der Track „Courage“ geht sogar satte 13 Minuten. Damit ist er für mich eine Weiterentwicklung bzw. Fortführung des Songs „A Ballad Of Heartbreak And Despair“. Solche ausufernden Tracks sind eher die Ausnahme und nicht unbedingt radiotauglich. Außerdem verlangt es dem Hörer mehr Aufmerksamkeit und Konzentration ab.
Warum hast Du Dich für solch episch lange Tracks entschieden?

J.B.: Gut gesagt! Ich habe Patreon gemacht, damit jeder die Reise mitmachen und die Schritte sehen kann, die zu einer Platte führen. Das Geld, das ich von Patreon bekomme, hat mir sehr geholfen, Dinge zu erledigen. Zurzeit verdiene ich damit etwa 200 Dollar im Monat – das klingt nicht viel, aber es hilft mir wirklich sehr weiter.

Du hast es wirklich auf den Punkt gebracht – keiner der Songs ist für das Radio oder die kurze Aufmerksamkeitsspanne, die die Welt hat, geeignet. Ich habe diese Songs gemacht, weil ich wirklich etwas GROSSES machen wollte. Scheiß auf die ganzen falschen Experten auf Tik Tok, die dir sagen, dass du deine Songs kurz halten sollst – mach DEINE Musik.

Die Gastmusiker

MH: Wie sieht es dieses Mal mit Gastmusikern aus? Hast du dir Unterstützung ins Boot geholt?

J.B.: Ja, ich habe einige Songabschnitte mit Leuten im Hinterkopf geschrieben und durch die Gnade Gottes sind sie meinem Ruf gefolgt! Ich wollte ein schillerndes Synthesizer-Solo in ‚Power‘ von David Van Pelt der Band ACOLYTE. David und ich haben uns kennengelernt, als unsere Bands 2015 für Blind Guardian eröffneten und wir haben uns sofort gut verstanden!

Ich wollte Joe Haleys (PSYCROPTIC) einzigartigen Rock-Shred in ‚Wisdom‘, weil ich wusste, dass ein 9-minütiger Rocksong diese vertrauten, aber würzigen Phrasen braucht. Joe hat die Platte auch gemischt und gemastert und ihm gebührt die ganze Anerkennung dafür, wie heavy sie ist.

Was Nick Disalvo betrifft – Mann, was für ein Trip! Ich entdeckte die Band ELDER im Jahr 2019 und die Saat für ‚Power Wisdom Courage‘ wurde gepflanzt, als ich ‚Reflections of a Floating World‘ hörte. Ich wusste, dass „Courage“ ein großes Finale braucht und vom ersten Tag an wollte ich Nick dafür gewinnen. Sein Spiel ist unglaublich melodisch und er übertreibt nie etwas. Ich hatte als Fan mit den Jungs zu tun und dachte mir, ich sollte die Frage stellen und ich bin sehr dankbar, dass er „Ja“ gesagt hat.

`POWER, WISDOM, COURAGE´

MH: Ohne meiner Rezension vorgreifen zu wollen, die demnächst hier auf `metal-heads.de‘ zu lesen sein wird, möchte ich anmerken: Diese drei Songs sind fantastisch! Epische, homogene Kompositionen, die ihresgleichen suchen. Die Songs strotzen nur so vor Kraft und Energie und bieten allerlei Facetten und Spielereien, die die Zeit wie im Flug vergehen lassen. Power Metal vom Feinsten mit einer gehörigen Portion Stoner Rock darin.
Ist es wirklich die Fortsetzung Deiner Reise, die im ersten Teil mit der Ballade „A Ballad Of Heartbreak And Despair“ endete?
Worum geht es in den neuen Songs?

J.B.: Ja, es ist die Fortsetzung von „ABoHaD“! Das Album handelt von meiner Reise, die mich dazu brachte, meine Angst zu überwinden, das Rattenrennen zu verlassen, um als Künstler zu leben.

Die Angst, mit der man seinen Kopf füllt, ist wie eine Falle in der Wüste und man braucht Kraft, um sie zu überwinden. Ich hatte viele Gespräche mit Freunden und Mentoren, deren Weisheit ich mit an Bord nahm. Das Schwierigste ist schließlich, den Mut zu haben, die Sicherheit und den Komfort zu verlassen, den das Geld mit sich bringt – das ist wie in einem Wald… sicher ist es sicher und man hat alles, was man will, aber ich hatte einfach einen Ruf zum Abenteuer und ich wusste, dass ich hier draußen mein wahres Zuhause finden würde.

Das Besondere finden

MH: Erzähl uns aus Deiner Sicht, was die Hörer von diesen Songs erwarten können und was das Besondere an ihnen ist. Worauf hast Du besonderen Wert gelegt?

J.B.: Meine Herangehensweise an das Songwriting war schon immer „Wenn es sich gut anfühlt, mach es zweimal“, aber ich schätze, in meinem etwas fortgeschrittenen Alter möchte ich langsamer werden und die Fahrt ein wenig mehr genießen, also war es bei dieser Platte mehr „Wenn es sich gut anfühlt, mach es viermal langsam“.

Die Betonung liegt auf den Riffs, aber ich wollte auch die typische Instrumentierung aufgeben, die ich seit den Platten meiner alten Band gepeitscht hatte. Ich hatte das ganze Album mit orchestralen Instrumenten gemacht und es war gut, aber ich wusste tief im Inneren, dass es nicht interessant war. Eines Tages war ich frustriert und tauschte zum Spaß das Orchester gegen Sounds aus, die von diesen alten Matrix/Moog-Synthesizern stammten, und es wurde sofort interessanter für mich. NIGHTWISH haben das symphonische Zeug bereits perfektioniert, also überlasse ich es ihnen.

Jetzt ist Party angesagt!

MH: Was wolltest Du gerne verbessern oder anders machen?

J.B.: Der Aufwand, den ich betrieben habe, um zu lernen, wie man diese große Produktion macht, hat mich fast in den Abgrund gestoßen! Ich musste lernen, wie man mit MIDI arbeitet, das war alles neu für mich. Zum Glück hatte ich die Zeit zum Ausprobieren und Scheitern. Ich verfolgte einige Ideen wochenlang, die ins Leere liefen – ich fühle mich nach dieser Platte älter und weiser! Das nächste Album wird eine Dumb/Sexy-Rock-Platte – ich bin dem Wald entkommen und will jetzt Party machen! Ich habe das Gefühl, dass sich mein Gespür dafür verbessert hat, wann ich mich zurücklehnen und wann ich hart durchgreifen muss.

Die visuellen Künste

MH: Wird es Videos zu den Songs geben?

J.B.: Wenn ich nicht einen großen Zuschuss bekomme und so etwas wie Sturgill Simpsons „Sound and Fury“-Videoalbum auf Netflix machen kann, wird es das nicht für alle Songs geben. Es gibt Diskussionen über ein Video zu ‚Wisdom‘, aber wenn es nicht richtig gemacht werden kann, will ich es nicht machen. Das Promo-Zeug wird aber cool sein – ich bin auf einen großartigen visuellen Künstler Malachi Cull (@Palantir_Visuals) gestoßen und er hat die flüssige Lichtshow gemacht!

MH: Das Albumcover wurde von dem Künstler Ryan T Hancock gestaltet. Was verbindet Sie mit dem Künstler? Warum haben Sie ihn ausgewählt?

J.B.: Ryan hat meine Phantasie mit seinen Arbeiten gefangen genommen – insbesondere ‚The River Guide‘, das er als Tribut an Howling Giant gemalt hat. Ich lernte ihn kennen und gab das Bild in Auftrag, lange bevor die Songs überhaupt fertig waren! Ich hatte einfach das Gefühl, dass sein Stil und seine Farben zu dem passten, was ich in den Songs hörte.

Zwischenbemerkung: Ryan T Hangcock ist ein toller Künstler aus England. Dessen Bilder kann man hier bestaunen und erwerben.

MH: Du hattest bereits letztes Jahr erwähnt und hast es gerade schon mal angeschnitten: Wie sieht es mit einem weiteren Album aus?

J.B.: Es scheint so lange her zu sein, nicht wahr! Im Moment arbeite ich an dem Dumb/Sexy-Rock-Album, das ich vorhin erwähnt habe, und es ist auch noch mehr episches Zeug auf dem Weg – ich bin mir nicht sicher, ob es ‚Power Wisdom Courage 2‘ oder etwas anderes ist!

MH: How are things with you at the moment? Are you doing well?

J.B.: Yes I am very well! It’s nice to be approaching the goals I set for myself.

MH: You seem to become a permanent guest at `metal-heads.de‘. Therefore, it would be nice if the readers would gradually learn a little more about the person Jonathon Barwick, who is behind FIERCE DEITY. In the last interview we learned that you come from Tasmania in Australia, more precisely from the small city of Hobart.

How do you imagine life there? How and where do you live there?

J.B.: Hobart is a unique and wonderful place. Everyone who visits it finds their own way to fall in love with it. It’s a simple life here – cold in winter, warm in summer. I think being isolated from the big wide world leaves room for creative thoughts.

Bizarre festival Dark Mofo

MH: Is there perhaps also some kind of crazy tradition in Tasmania? What is typically Tasmanian?

J.B.: There are some great festivals here! In winter we have a pagan festival called Dark Mofo (Wikipedia / Facebook ) – at best it’s very interesting and at worst it’s just weird for the sake of weird. I wouldn’t say we have crazy traditions or anything but we do have some amazing breweries here!

Bizarre wildlife

MH: Australia is also known for its dangerous animal inhabitants. What was your most dangerous or unusual animal encounter?

J.B.: I grew up on a pretty wild property far from the city so I’ve encountered my share of spiders and snakes! Most spiders are pretty harmless but the ones that aren’t definitely aren’t. As for snakes you’ve got to be on the lookout on hot days if you’re in tall grass. My mum once found two male tiger snakes fighting over a female in our backyard – they were incredibly vicious. My grandfather killed them both with his walking stick. You don’t want them around kids and animals.

Beginning of the journey

MH: But now let’s get back to the most important thing, the music. You had released a series of singles. It started with „The Path“ and ended with „A Ballad Of Heartbreak And Despair“. They were about a man on a journey. You called him „The Traveller“. Even though I liked all the songs, I thought the last single „A Ballad Of Heartbreak And Despair“ was outstanding.

How do your fans see it? What was your most successful single so far?

J.B.: I think releasing singles for a little while was a great way to find people – fans have arrived at a different song and all think of FD a little differently. ‘A Ballad of Heartbreak and Despair’ was definitely an attempt to step out of my comfort zone and do what I want to do and I’m only going to venture forward from there. I’m not sure which has been the most successful – at this point in my life just releasing a song is a success!

Fuck the job

MH: Last year you expressed your wish to give up your job in order to dedicate yourself completely to music and earn a living with it.

Have you already reached your goal or in what way have you come closer to this goal?

J.B.: Best decision I’ve ever made! When you decide you’ll do whatever it takes to pursue your art you realise there is no finish line – it’s only a battle to sustain yourself so you can continue to produce your work. Everything I do is for the next record. I always want to be working on a record until it’s my time to go.

The surprise album `The Path: UnMasked´

MH: You recently released an album and surprised me a lot with it. Because you have reworked all your previous songs unplugged or like you called it: The Path-UnMasked!

Was that a spontaneous idea or how did it come about? Why did you do that?

J.B.: Yes definitely a spontaneous idea! In an interview last year I made the bold claim that good metal bands write songs and bad metal bands write metal songs. UnMasked is my statement that I write songs.

MH: You spend a lot of time to unite all instruments to a whole, to give the song a certain mood and a statement. And suddenly there is only the acoustic guitar.

How do you approach something like that when you only have an acoustic guitar for playing?

J.B.: It was an awesome challenge to figure out how to make the songs move with just the basics! I had to look for their groove in different genres and I’m really happy with how it came out. I planned on doing a big PR campaign for it’s release but instead I let the songs do the talking and just put it out.

MH: Anyone who follows you on Facebook or Patreon knows what you’ve been up to in the meantime. You share exclusive content on Patreon with your fans, who can follow your musical activities there. You have just given these fans the opportunity to listen to your new album „Power Wisdom Courage“. I also made use of this opportunity. It is an unusual album, because the album consists only of three songs. However, it should be noted that the individual songs have an outstanding playing time, so that the playing time is ultimately over 30 minutes. The track „Courage“ even goes a whopping 13 minutes.

Thus it is for me a further development and/or continuation of the song „A Ballad Of Heartbreak And Despair“. Such sprawling tracks are rather the exception and not necessarily suitable for radio. On the other hand it demands more attention and concentration from the listener.

Why did you decide for such epic long tracks?

J.B.: Well said! I made Patreon so anyone can join the journey and see the footsteps that go into a record. The money I get from Patreon has been monumental in helping me get things done. I currently make around $200 a month – doesn’t sound like much but it really goes a long way.

You’ve really nailed it – none of the songs are suitable for the radio or the short attention span the world has. I made these songs because I really wanted to do something BIG. Fuck all the fake experts on Tik Tok telling you to keep your songs short – make YOUR music.

The guest musicians

MH: What about guest musicians this time? Have you brought support on board?

J.B.: Yes I wrote some sections with people in mind and by the grace of God they answered my call!

I wanted a dazzling synth solo in ‘Power’ by David Van Pelt from ACOLYTE. David and I met when our bands opened up for Blind Guardian in 2015 and we hit it off!

I wanted Joe Haley’s (PSYCROPTIC) unique rock shred in ‘Wisdom’ because I knew a 9 minute rock song needed those familiar but spicy phrases. Joe also mixed and mastered the record and is due all the credit for how heavy it is.

As for Nick Disalvo – man, what a trip! I discovered the band Elder in 2019 and the seeds for ‘Power Wisdom Courage’ were planted when I heard ‘Reflections of a Floating World’. I knew ‘Courage’ needed a big finish and from day one I wanted to get Nick to do it. His playing is incredibly melodic and he never over does anything. I’d been interacting with the boys as a fan and figured I should ask the question and I’m very grateful he said „Yes“.

`POWER, WISDOM, COURAGE´

MH: Without wanting to anticipate my review, which will soon be read here at `metal-heads.de‘, I would like to note that these three songs have become fantastic without exaggeration. Epic homogeneous compositions, which are looking for their equal. The songs are bursting with power and energy and offer all kinds of facets and gimmicks that make the time fly by. Power metal at its best with heavy stoner rock in it.

Is it really the continuation of your journey, which ended in the first part with the ballad „A Ballad Of Heartbreak And Despair“?

What are the new songs about?

J.B.: Yes it does continue from ‘ABoHaD’. The album is about my journey that led me to overcoming my fear of leaving the rat race to live as an artist. The fear you fill your head with is like being trapped in the desert and you need power to overcome it. I had many conversations with friends and mentors whose wisdom I took on board. Finally, the hardest part is having the courage to leave the safety and comfort that money brings – kind of like being in a forest… sure it’s safe and you have everything you want but I just had a call to adventure and I knew I would find my real home out here.

Find that special something

MH: Tell us from your point of view what the listeners can expect from these songs and what is special about them. What did you place particular emphasis on?

J.B.: My approach to songwriting has always been “If it feels good, do it twice” but I guess in my older age I want to slow down and enjoy the ride a little more so with this record it was more “If it feels good, do it 4 times slowly.”

The emphasis is on the riffs but I also wanted to abandon the typical instrumentation I’d been flogging since my old band’s records. I had the whole album done with orchestral instruments and it was good but I knew deep down it wasn’t interesting. One day I was frustrated and as a joke I switched the orchestra for sounds pulled from those old Matrix/Moog synth vibes and it became immediately more interesting to me. Nightwish have already perfected the symphonic stuff so I’ll leave it to them.

Now it’s party time!

MH: What would you like to improve or do differently?

J.B.: The effort I went to learning how to craft this big production nearly pushed me into the abyss! I had to learn the ins and outs of working with MIDI which was all new to me. Fortunately I had the time to try and fail. I followed some ideas for weeks that went nowhere – I feel older and wiser after this record! The next album is going to be a dumb/sexy rock record – I escaped the forest and now I want to party! I feel my sense of when to lean back and when to go hard has improved.

The visual arts

MH: Will there be videos of the songs?

J.B.: Unless I can get a massive grant and make something like Sturgill Simpson’s ‘Sound and Fury’ visual album on Netflix there won’t be for all the songs. There’s discussion around a theatrical video for ‘Wisdom’ but unless it can be done right I don’t want to do it. The promotional stuff is going to be cool though – I came across an awesome visual artist Malachi Cull (@Palantir_Visuals) and he made the liquid light show!

MH: The album cover was designed by the artist Ryan T Hancock. What connects you with the artist? Why did you choose him?

J.B.: Ryan captured my imagination with his work – in particular ‘The River Guide’ which he painted as a tribute to Howling Giant. I got to know him and commissioned the art long before the songs were even complete! I just felt his style and colour synergised with what I was hearing in the songs.

MH: You mentioned in the last interview and some questions before that you are still working on another album. What’s the situation with that?

J.B.: Seems so long ago doesn’t it! At the moment I’m working on the dumb/sexy rock album I mentioned earlier and there’s also more epic fuzz on the way – not sure if it’s ‘Power Wisdom Courage 2’ or something else!

Nachdem sie sich in der Vergangenheit schon sehr klar und deutlich gegen Rassismus und Homophobie positioniert haben, ist „Between The Lines“ nun eine Abrechnung mit den modernen Massenvernichtungswaffen. Der Name Brunhilde drückt schon aus, was uns erwartet: Harter, kompromissloser Rock getragen von der kraftvollen Stimme von Frontfrau Caro Loy. Auch wenn die aktuelle Single „All is lost“ heißt, ist mir angesichts solcher Qualität um die Zukunft des Rocks nicht bange. VOLCANOVA haben am 21. August 2020 ihr Debüt-Album „Radical Waves“ herausgebracht, das mir richtig gut gefallen hat – auch wenn Stoner Rock sonst nicht so meine Musik ist. (Die Review könnt ihr HIER lesen.)
Neugierig darauf geworden, wer hinter der Band steckt, wie die Jungs sich gefunden und dann den Stoner Rock in VOLCANOVA-Manier entwickelt haben, habe ich ihrem Bassisten Þorsteinn Árnason ein paar Fragen gestellt.

Father and BLACK SABBATH

I associate Stoner Rock with FU MANCHU, KYUSS, California, 80s -Psychedelic Rock, marijuana, jam sessions in the desert, etc. but rather less with Iceland. How did you come to play this music? Where or through whom did you get to know this kind of music?

I guess you could say that I´ve been listening to stoner/doom since I was a little kid with Black Sabbath on vinyl with my father, although I had no idea at the time that I was listening to some very important pioneers.

But I remember really getting my foot into the stoner rock around 10-12 years ago, I saw Brain Police play here in Iceland along with Brant Bjork and The Bros and that was the first time for me seeing Brain Police and it was pretty spectacular, especially to see Brant Bjork of course. After that I started getting into bands like Clutch, The Sword, Fu Manchu and so on although I had been listening to bands like Mastodon and Gojira. But at the time I remember I was more into prog metal, but not so much now. Then I started a band in my hometown in 2009 and we played some kind of stoner metal.

You come from different parts of Iceland. How / where did you get to know each other? Do you all live in Reykjavík by now? Where do you rehearse? 

Sammi [Samúel Ásgeirsson (Vocals, Gitarre)] had seen me and Dagur [Dagur Atlason (Drums)] play with our previous bands and he knew that both of us were moving to Reykjavík, there were some changes going on with the band so he contacted us and asked us if we would be interested in joining the band. So me and Sammi really didn’t know each other when we joined the band, but me and Dagur were good friends.
And yes, we all live in Reykjavík now and we rehearse at our practice room in Reykjavík which we call “Helvíti” or “Hell”. So when we want to write some good tunes we go to hell.

Who came up with the idea for the band name? 

It came up in class a long time ago when they were teaching Sammi about the Icelandic landscape and natural disasters.

You have been playing together for a few years and have played a number of shows (among others) with SÓLSTAFIR, THE VINTAGE CARAVAN, ELDER. So you had quite a few songs ready. Why did your fans have to wait for an album until a few days ago? 

Although the band was formed in 2014, me and Dagur didn´t join the band until autumn days of 2017. So you can say in a way, that a new band was formed with an old name. We started writing songs straight away and played our first show around 4 or 5 months later. At our first shows, we did play one or two old songs from the previous version of the band and one of them ended up on “Radical Waves” which is “Mountain”.

A little less than a year later after we first met or in August 2018, we entered the studio to record “Radical Waves” which was fully composed at the time. We took almost another year to record it, mostly because of work, school and so on and to find time with our producer. After the album was finished, we started label hunting, because it was never really in the picture to release it by ourselves, so that took another year. So three years later after we first met, we finally got to release “Radical Waves”.

How did you come to The Sign Records? Did you write new songs for „Radical Waves“ or did you use the songs that were already tried and tested? 

After we finished the album, we went searching for labels and The Sign was one of the label that showed interest in us and we really liked what they were doing and liked some of the bands on the label, so here we are. Like said earlier, only one old song ended up on the album which is “Mountain”, other than that, there were only new songs on it written by us from 2017 to 2018.

Reactions to “Radical Waves”

Your album “Radical Waves” was released on August 21, 2020. How have the reactions been so far? 

The reactions have been unbelievable and quite beyond our expectations. We´ve had an endless amount of amazing reviews and we´ve sold quite a few, so we couldn´t be happier or ask for more.

A look at your Facebook page and the videos show that, seemingly, fun plays an important role for you. Or am I wrong about that? 

You are definitely not wrong about that, that has always been a theme for all the three of us after we first got together, to not take things too seriously and I think it doesn’t only come through from our lyrics, our music and videos, but also from our live performances.

The album is a quirky mix of partying, serious topics, fun and death. Where do the ideas/the lyrics come from? How does the song-writing work for you? Is everyone involved? 

Yes, being all involved is a very big and important part of our composing procedure. But as for the song-writing, there is no exact formula for how it goes. Sometimes the songs come out of nowhere just from jamming on some riffs in the rehearsal room, sometimes one of us comes with a complete song and often one of us comes to rehearsal with some riffs from home, then we jam on them together and if we like what we´re hearing, we take it to the next stage of writing and that’s where composition comes in, where we all take part in, whether it’s coming up with new riffs or gluing together two or more riffs. Usually the singing melody comes last and sometimes we´ve been jamming on some songs for a long time before the singing is added. But when it’s added it´s usually just one of us that comes up with some melodies and then it’s usually up to that one to write lyrics but it can vary, sometimes we write the lyrics and the melodies together.

The Devil likes Sushi

Who came up with the idea for the videos? (Especially “Sushi Sam”?) 

Dagur came up with the idea for the Sushi Sam video, he also wrote the lyrics, so the concept about Lucifer roaming earth in a human form and that he has to eat sushi to maintain that form comes completely from Dagur. As for the “Super Duper Van video”, we had some rough ideas but most of the script is written by the producer, Gotti, who made both videos.

Do you have a favourite song on the album? You are the bass player for VOLCANOVA. You once said that you were originally a guitarist, but the band needed a bass player and so you took on that part. Have you come to terms with this position in the meantime or would you rather take on the guitar part? 

I think my favorite one from the album is M.O.O.D. Mainly because it’s so heavy and intense and it touches on a sensitive and a personal matter. It was written by Dagur and it’s so perfectly composed in my opinion and I always enjoy it so much playing it live mainly because of its heaviness and intensity like said earlier.

As for now, I´m just pretty cool with playing the bass and the reason could well be that I really just suck at the guitar since I almost entirely quit playing it when I started playing the bass around 18 years ago. But I really just enjoy the bass as an instrument and I always find it charming to have the freedom to dance around the guitar with some nice bass lines.Release-show had to be postponed due to Covid-19

In September you wanted to play at the Hard Rock Cafe in Reykjavík. The show has been postponed to October. Does this have to do with the Covid-19 situation? What has changed for you personally and for the band and how do you deal with it? How is the pandemic affecting the music scene in Iceland? 

Yes we had to postpone it because of Covid. We had a little Covid free window this summer here in Iceland and we were pretty optimistic about that gig in September but then they opened the borders for tourists and everything went sideways again. But the situation is under control after they tightened the borders again. So hopefully we can celebrate Radical Waves on Hard Rock on October 17th. 

As for me personally, it hasn’t affected me that much. I have a steady job and so on. As for the band, fortunately we got to play a few good gigs this summer, but it has not been the same, it’s annoying not being able to plan other gigs and so on and being forced to postpone gigs. But we managed to keep busy during the lockdown, we recorded some demos and did some stream gigs. But it has affected others a lot more. Everyone in the music scene is affected, especially the ones that depend on the income that comes from live music: artists, sound engineers, light techs, venues and so on and I know a lot of people that are struggling and it’s just really really bad and I feel for every single one of them. And that is of course the case all around the world.

Nothing to do but hope for the best and stay positive and really hope that the government will do something for this super important part of our society.

Dreams: on tour with MASTODON or QOTSA

When the whole situation returns to relative normalcy: do you want to go on tour? 

That is our goal although it’s hard to see when that can happen compared to the situation. We´ve already started to look at some dates for next year but you never know how the situation will be. But of course when it’s all over we just want to get out there and play as much as we can, that has always been our goal.

Which band would you like to play a show with or go on tour with? 

We are ready to go on tour with almost every band in the world or artist, although we do have a few exciting names in the hat for next year that could well happen. Although the dream tour would be with MASTODON or QOTSA, just to name something. It has also been mentioned to do a tour with our good friends in THE VINTAGE CARAVAN but nothing has been planned and hopefully we can make that happen someday. They have been doing such great things and we really look up to them, both as musicians and also for being just fantastic human beings and good friends, so that would definitely be something that we would be up for.

I have the impression that Icelandic bands are basically always asked to what extent or in what respect the (rough, bizarre, dark) landscape of Iceland has shaped their music. (And I’m just wondering if you’ve ever asked KYUSS how far the landscape or the climate influenced their music. And what they could have answered.) Which aspects of the Icelandic landscape or the climate did you include in the music? Or is the connection only to the volcanoes? 

Well that’s quite right, we do get that question a lot and I guess it’s understandable in a way, the landscape here is fantastic and I think being isolated on an Island with this beautiful nature and landscape comes into the picture as well. I’m not sure that VOLCANOVA is intentionally influenced by the landscape or the climate although dark and cold winters might have influenced something in our songwriting.
But you never know, maybe we are influenced every day all day by the midnight sun and the mountains surrounding us or the cold and dark winter nights without knowing it. Looking at the whole picture, I really just think that our music is more influenced by ourselves as individuals and how we fit our ideas together to form our music rather than being influenced by the landscape, but then again, you could also say that the nature and the climate might affect one or two of us more than the other, so I guess you could also say that in a way the band might be influenced by the Icelandic climate and nature.
But that has never been like a big thing for us to try to express that in our music and I think our only connection to volcanoes is the name. VOLCANOVA means new volcano and of course it’s fitting to our environment, since this little island is made out of fire and ice. 

Life is a party – and then you die

Did you ever think: Hey, why don’t we write our lyrics in Icelandic as well? Or does that not fit to Stoner Rock? 

That actually never crossed our minds I think. I guess you could fit Icelandic lyrics or every language for that matter to every genre but in our case, and since we’re also aiming for foreign market i´m not sure how people would react to it although we´ve had some Icelandic bands that have been very successful outside of Iceland that sing in Icelandic, SÓLSTAFIR for example. Icelandic can also be very tricky and it can be a fine line between writing really good and beautiful lyrics and on the other hand to write horrible lyrics, so sometimes I really just find it easier to write lyrics in English, I also think it would just sound strange but you never know I guess.

What are your next plans? 

If everything works out, we will do our release concert on october 17th and then we have a few other gigs planned for the rest of the year. Otherwise we will keep on planning next year and hopefully we can do a good tour or two to follow up on Radical Waves.

Is there anything you would tell our readers to take along?

Just remember dear reader, that life´s a party and then you die!
