METALHEADs Toplist 2023-Finale:Folk Metal HEIDEVOLK, STORM SEEKER, FIDDLER’S GREEN, TROLD, CRUACHAN!

HEIDEVOLK

HEIDEVOLK (Facebook) aus den Niederlanden gingen dieses Jahr mit ihrem Album „Wederkeer“ an den Start.  Auch wenn der Opener „Hagalaz“ instrumental noch nicht so die Folk Vibes verbreitet, so ist der doch schon mal eine gute Einstimmung auf das Album. Der Song rockt in guter alter Pagan-Metal-Manier.

Der zweite Song „Drink Met De Goden“ fängt mich sofort ein. Hier pumpt umgehend die folkische Ader und die Atmosphäre lässt mich frohlocken. Und dann ertönt dieser epische Refrain, der für Stimmung sorgt. Da erhebe ich doch gerne mein Methorn oder meinen Bierhumpen und lasse es krachen. Anschließend schunkel ich zu den geilen Chöre und den später einsetzenden stimmungsvollen Streichern.

Einen besonderen Charme versprühen altertümliche Gesänge mit entsprechender traditioneller akustischer Instrumentierung. „Schildenmuur“ ist das erste Zwischenspiel dieser Art mit von Trommeln begleitetem Chorgesang. Solche Klänge hätte ich mir auch gerne mehr in den anderen Songs gewünscht. Gerade der Schlusstrack „Zomervuur“ liefert einen traumhaften Abschluss, der den Focus auf den Gesang und die Streicher legt während leise Trommeln und eine Akustikgitarre einen schönen Klangteppich erzeugen.

HEIDEVOLK lassen mit ihrem Album „Wederkeer“ das erste Folk-Metal-Highlight dieses Jahres erklingen. Die gelungene Mischung zwischen Folk und Heavy Metal macht schon was her. Euch erwarten allerlei knackige Lieder, die den Folk kräftig einatmen. Interessant sind die kontrastierenden akustischen Zwischenspiele. Auf weiten Strecken schmettern die Männer schroffen melodischen Heavy Viking Metal.

STORM SEEKER

STORM SEEKER (Facebook/Homepage) haben die Segel gesetzt und die neue Reise mit „Nautic Force“ gestartet. Die Band hat feinsten Seemansgarn gesponnen und lassen die Kanonen 11 mal zünden, um euch mit schönen Folk aus den sieben Weltmeeren zu versorgen. Die Songs sind recht einfach gehalten, gehen aber dadurch wunderbar ins Ohr und sorgen für gute Laune und ich würde sogar behaupten, dass sie wunderbar tanzbar sind. Die Vocals passen hervorragend zum Konzept und lassen Piratenfeeling aufkommen.

Highlights für mich sind die traditionellen Instrumente, wenn Tim „Ughar der schrecklich Durstige“ Braatz mit seinem Akkordeon erklingt oder Fabienne mit der Drehleier. Das sorgt für besonderes Feeling, denn wann hört man schon mal im Metal solche Klänge. Auch die Flötentöne machen echt was her und fügen sich perfekt ein (z.B. „Rolling Home“). Richtig abfeiern kann man also spätestens dann, wenn solche Songs wie „Bottom Up“ erklingen. Da schmeißt man die Ruder weg, geht an Deck und öffnet die Fässer. Danach lässt es sich am besten schunkeln es sich beim Song „Rolling Home“. Der macht einfach süchtig und man könnte sich das in Dauerschleife anhören. Und wie durstig das alles macht…ehe man sich versieht, hat man die Kanne geköpft und gönnt sich einen großen Schluck.

Also wer auf der nächsten Party für richtig Stimmung sorgen will, der sollte sich dieses Album auf jeden Fall zulegen. Und das gilt auch für die nächste Empfehlung.

FIDDLERS GREEN

Hui… jetzt werden viel aufschreien und rufen: Hey, das ist doch kein Metal!

Ja, das mag sein. Ist mir aber egal, denn das Album ist einfach klasse und so was von purer Folk-Spaß. Genau deswegen ist es in dieser Liste. Wer nicht drauf steht (was ich mir eigentlich nicht vorstellen kann, wenn man Folkmusik mag), der kann direkt zur nächsten Band switchen. Da geht es wieder hart zur Sache.

Alle anderen werden sich an dem authentischen Irish-Folk-Flair erfreuen und es richtig abfeiern. Das Violinenspiel ist ein großes Highlight im Sound von FIDDLERS GREEN. Was andere mit großartigen Gitarrensolos abliefern, wird hier in bester Manier an der Violine abgefeiert. Ich möchte hier aus dem Review meines Kollegen ‚Kelle‘ zitieren, die man sich durchlesen sollte, wenn man noch mehr interessante Eindrücke und Hintergründe über das Album erfahren möchte.

Man merkt auch wieder, welch großartige Stimme Ralf Albers hat. Aber auch Tobias Heindl (Geige, Gesang) gibt hier sein ganzes können preis. einfach genial wie er mit der Geige umgeht. Jeder der Fiddler’s schon einmal Live gesehen hat weiß was ich meine.

Aber man nutzt hier nicht nur die Violine, um folkischen Flair zu erzeugen. Es ist ein höchst kreatives Gesamtkonzept aus allen Elementen, die diesen einmaligen Flair entstehen lassen. Es wird euch begeistern, auf wie vielfältige Weise hier hochkarätige Songs beste stimmungsvolle Unterhaltung bieten.

Und verpasst nicht das ausführliche Review meines Kollegen ‚Kelle‘, der dort noch interessante Hintergründe für euch parat hat.

TROLD

TROLD bieten eine Märchenstunde der anderen Art. Wir gehen jetzt wieder eindeutig in Richtung Metal, denn die Trolle spielen einen verdammt harten Stiefel. Nach dem Intro ‚De Var Engang‘ stürmt die Trollhorde ohne Aufwärmprogramm mit Vollgas zum Beutezug. Es werden keine Gefangenen gemacht. Mein lieber Scholli… Das nenne ich mal ne Sause. Es fliegen die Fetzen. Die fiesen extremen Vocals von Sänger Astór Palsson (nicht mehr im aktuellen Kader) prägen den Sound. Wow! Da haben mich TROLD einfach mal überrannt und platt gemacht!

Zum Glück kann ich mich beim nächsten Track ‚Udyrets Grab‘ ein wenig erholen. Die TROLD-Horde nimmt ein wenig Fahrt raus und lässt einen beschwingten melodischen Hammer kreisen. Der Folklorepart klingt ganz wunderbar und fügt sich einwandfrei ein.Man merkt schon, dass TROLD Wert auf gute Laune und eine Menge Humor legen. Der nächste Track ‚Roveren‘ bringt das sehr gut zum Ausdruck. Die Einleitung des Songs ist skuril und leitet die Party skuril und amüsant ein. Sodann darf geschunkelt und die Methörner gehoben werden. Und in die Chöre kann man wunderbar mit einsteigen. Was will man mehr, um in gute Stimmung zu gelangen und nebenbei noch die Nackenmuskelatur zu stärken.

TROLD geizen nicht mit fabelhaften Melodien, was der Song ‚Sensommerballett‘ eindrucksvoll zur Schau stellt. Dabei macht der Chorus eine besonders starke Figur und ist das Sahnehäubchen.

TROLD zeigen mit ‚De Var Engang‘ eindrucksvoll wie man eine zünftige Trollparty feiert. Das Album macht Stimmung und fabriziert mit viel Humor gute Laune. Der authentische Folk ist genauso essentieller Bestandteil wie die skrupellose Vehemenz gepaart mit eingängigen tragenden Melodien. Die Verbindung zwischen fiesen Tönen und mitreißenden Rhythmen ist super gelungen.

CRUACHAN

CRUACHAN (Facebook) haben eine lange Tradition, denn sie musizieren seit 1992 und wie man sich vorstellen kann, hat die Band viel durchgemacht. Viele Höhen, aber auch einige Tiefpunkte. Am Ende stand Gründer Keith Fay in der Corona-Pandemie fast allein dar. Doch als Kämpfer gibt man nicht auf! (Interview)

Und nur deshalb dürfen wir uns an dem genialen Album „The Living and The Dead“ erfreuen. Es ist mein Album des Jahres 2023, welches im März veröffentlicht wurde. Danach kamen noch viel sehr starke Alben, aber letztlich habe ich diesem Album mein Herz und den Titel „Album des Jahres“ geschenkt. Der Grund ist recht simpel. Dieses Album verkörpert für mich die

perfekte Symbiose von Folk und Heavy Metal!

Die hier gebotenen Eindrücke sind so vielfältig, dass ich sie hier an dieser Stelle nicht noch einmal im Detail wie in meinem Review beschreiben kann, weil es zu sehr ausufern würde. Als ein hervorragendes Beispiel für die Bandbreite der musikalischen Ausgestaltung sei hier der Song „The Queen“ genannt, bei dem man sogar von progressiven Strukturen sprechen kann.

Alle Stimmungen fließen ineinander und finden sich harmonisch zusammen. Dabei führt der Fluß durch unterschiedliche Welten, so dass „The Queen“ an sich schon eine epische Reise vollzieht. Deshalb bin ich hier am Beginn des Albums schon total überwältigt angesichts der vielen verschiedenen musikalischen Ufern und Orten, an denen ich vorbeitreibe. Es startet beschwingt und fröhlich, wobei es nicht lange dauert bis Sänger Keith seine fiesen Vocals rauslässt.

Dann folgt eine toller melodischer reiner Folkpart mit passendem klassischen Gesang. Anschließend ergießt sich ein epischer Instrumentalpart mit sehr atmosphärischer Ausstrahlung, in dem man sich wunderbar verlieren kann. Einfach nur schön! Ein fließender Übergang geleitet den Hörer wieder in den gitarrenlastigen treibenden Part und der Song gewinnt wieder an Kraft und Masse mit einem krachenden Finale, der kein Stein auf dem anderen lässt. 

Was für ein monumentales Erlebnis!

Einen weiteren Song möchte ich dennoch erwähnen. „The Reaper“ ist ein sehr persönlicher Song, denn er wurde geschrieben, als der Vater von Keith verstarb. Ihm ist dieser Song gewidmet. Dieser Song hat mich mit seiner Intensität berührt (schon bevor ich den Hintergrund kannte). Eingeleitet mit einem fetten schweren Bass erklingt dieser majestätische Brecher. Der eingestreute Chorus, welcher nur mit der Violine begleitet wird, kontrastiert mit den schweren Strophen. Und was sich dann im instrumentalen Zwischenspiel eröffnet, ist eine emotional epische Offenbarung, die das Herz mit Emotionen flutet. Ich bekomme jedesmal wieder Gänsehaut. Dieser Song vereint zwei verschiedene Welten in sich. Ein Meisterwerk!

CRUACHAN haben mit „The Living and The Dead“ ein Meisterwerk des Folk Metal erschaffen. Die Fusion von Folk und Metal ist phänomenal gelungen. Dieses Album ist sozusagen ein Schwert, das aus Damast-Stahl geschmiedet wurde. Es besteht aus vielen verschiedenen Schichten, die am Ende eine hartes scharfes Schwert liefern, aber gleichzeitig ist es mit diversen Maserungen kunstvoll verziert.

Das Album ist so abwechslungsreich und zugleich unterhaltsam gestaltet, dass nicht ein Moment der Langeweile aufkommt. Ganz im Gegenteil! Man ist schier überwältigt von den genial komponierten Songs. Dazu kommen die hochprofessionellen Musiker, die dem ganzen Sound die Seele verleihen, durch die diese Musik zum Leben erwacht. Die klassischen Instrumente werden vortrefflich dargeboten und perfektionieren den Folk Faktor. Die Violine ist ein wahrgewordener Traum und schenkt den Songs immer wieder die passende Atmosphäre. Wahnsinn! Es gibt keine schwachen Songs! Man merkt jedem Song das Herzblut und die Liebe an, mit dem er komponiert und gespielt wurde. Jeder Song ist eine Wucht!

HEIDEVOLK

HEIDEVOLK (Facebook) from the Netherlands launched their album „Wederkeer“ this year. Even if the opener „Hagalaz“ doesn’t quite spread the folk vibes instrumentally, it’s a good introduction to the album and rocks a wild Pagan Metal style.

The second song „Drink Met De Goden“ captures me immediately. The folk vein is pumping immediately and the atmosphere creates a happy mood. This is also ensured by the beautiful chorus. I’m forced to raise my methorn or beer mug. Then I sway to the great choirs and the joyful strings that kick in later.

Ancient chants with corresponding traditional acoustic instrumentation exude a special charm. „Schildenmuur“ is the first interlude of this kind with choral singing accompanied by drums. I would have liked to hear more sounds like this in the other songs. The final track „Zomervuur“ in particular provides a dreamlike conclusion, focusing on the vocals and strings while soft drums and an acoustic guitar create a beautiful soundscape.

HEIDEVOLK’s album „Wederkeer“ was the first Folk Metal highlight of the year. The mixture between Folk and Heavy Pagan Metal turned out very good. You can expect crisp songs contrasting to acoustic interludes.

STORM SEEKER

STORM SEEKER (Facebook/Homepage) have set sail and started their new voyage with „Nautic Force“ this year. They have a lot of bangers on board and let the cannons fire 11 times to provide you with beautiful Folk from the seven seas. The songs are kept quite simple, but are wonderfully catchy and put you in a good mood, and I would even say that they are danceable. The vocals fit the concept perfectly and create a pirate feeling.

Highlights for me are the traditional instruments, when Tim „Ughar the terribly thirsty“ Braatz plays his accordion or Fabienne with the hurdy-gurdy. This creates a special feeling, because when do you ever hear such sounds in metal? The flute sounds are also really impressive and fit in perfectly (e.g. „Rolling Home“). You can really party at the latest when songs like „Bottom Up“ are played. You throw away the oars, go on deck and open the barrels. After that, the song „Rolling Home“ is the best way to sway with your mates. It’s simply addictive and you could listen to it on a continuous loop. And you become really thirsty while hearing to this music. Before you know it, you’ve opened the barrel and treated yourself to a big gulp.

Also wer auf der nächsten Party für richtig Stimmung sorgen will, der sollte sich dieses Album auf jeden Fall zulegen. Und das gilt auch für die nächste Empfehlung.

FIDDLERS GREEN

I know that many people will shout: Hey, that’s not metal!

Yes, that may be. But I don’t care, because the album is simply awesome and so much pure Folk fun. That’s exactly why it’s on this list. If you don’t like it (which I can’t really imagine if you like folk music), you can switch straight to the next band.

Everyone else will also enjoy the authentic Irish Folk flair and really party to it. The violin playing is a major highlight in the sound of FIDDLERS GREEN. What others deliver with great guitar solos is celebrated here in the best way on the violin. I would like to quote here from the review by my colleague ‚Kelle‘, which you should read through if you want to find out more interesting impressions and background information about the album.

Once again you realize what a great voice Ralf Albers has. But Tobias Heindl (violin, vocals) also reveals all his skills here. simply brilliant how he handles the violin. Anyone who has ever seen Fiddler’s live knows what I mean.

TROLD

TROLD (Facebook) offer a fairytales of a different kind. We are now clearly heading in the direction of Metal again, because the trolls play damn hard. After the intro ‚De Var Engang‘ the troll horde storms full throttle to the foray. No prisoners are taken. What the hell… That’s what I call a party. The shreds fly. The nasty, extreme vocals fit perfectly with the wild sound. Wow! TROLD simply overran me and flattened me!

Fortunately, I can recover a little with the next track ‚Udyrets Grab‘. The TROLD horde picks up a little speed and the folk part sounds great and fits in succesfully. And you can tell that TROLD value a good mood and a lot of humor. The next track ‚Roveren‘ expresses this very well. The introduction to the song is quirky and gets the party started in a bizarre and amusing way. Then it’s time to sway and raise your horns. And you can join in wonderfully with the choruses. What more could you want to get into a good mood and strengthen your neck muscles at the same time?

TROLD are not stingy with fabulous melodies, as the song ‚Sensommerballett‘ impressively demonstrates. The chorus cuts a particularly strong figure and is the icing on the cake.

TROLD show with ‚De Var Engang‘ spectacular how to celebrate a troll party. This album makes really fun and shines with a lot of humor. The authentic folk is just as essential as the scupulous vehemence paired with catchy supporting melodies. The connection between nasty tones and rousing rhythms is quite successful.

CRUACHAN

CRUACHAN (Facebook) have a long tradition, because they have been making music since 1992 and as you can imagine, the band has been through a lot. Many highs, but also some lows. Then founder Keith Fay is left almost alone in the Corona pandemic, having already written songs for the new album. But as a fighter you never give up! (interview)

And that’s the only reason we can enjoy the brilliant album „The Living and The Dead“. It is my album of the year 2023, which was released in March. After that came a lot of very strong albums, but in the end I gave this album my heart. The reason is quite simple. For me, this album embodies the

perfect symbiosis of folk and heavy metal!

The impressions offered here are so varied that I can’t describe them in detail here as I did in my review, because it would get too out of hand. The song „The Queen“ is an excellent example of the wide range of musical arrangements, where you can even speak of progressive structures.

All the moods flow into one another and come together harmoniously. The river leads through different worlds, so that „The Queen“ is an epic journey in itself. That’s why, at the beginning of the album, I’m already totally overwhelmed by the many different musical shores and places I drift past. It starts off upbeat and cheerful, and it doesn’t take long for singer Keith to let out his nasty vocals.

This is followed by an epic instrumental part with a very atmospheric vibe in which you can lose yourself wonderfully. Simply beautiful! A flowing transition leads the listener back into the guitar-heavy, driving part and the song gains strength and mass again with a crashing finale that leaves no stone unturned.

What a monumental experience!

However, I would like to mention one more song. „The Reaper“ is a very personal song, because it was written when Keith’s father passed away. This song is dedicated to him. It touched me with its intensity (even before I knew the background). This majestic crusher begins with a fat, heavy bass. The interspersed chorus, which is only accompanied by the violin, contrasts with the heavy verses. And what then opens up in the instrumental interlude is an emotionally epic revelation that floods the heart with emotion. I get goosebumps every time. This song unites two different worlds. A masterpiece!

CRUACHAN have created a masterpiece of folk metal with „The Living and The Dead“. The fusion of Folk and Metal is phenomenally successful. This album is, so to speak, a sword forged from Damascus steel. It consists of many different layers, which in the end provide a hard, sharp sword, but at the same time it is artfully decorated with various grains.

The album is so varied and entertaining that there is never a moment of boredom. Quite the opposite! You are almost overwhelmed by the brilliantly composed songs. Added to this are the highly professional musicians who give the whole sound the soul that brings this music to life. The classical instruments are performed excellently and perfect the folk factor. The violin is a dream come true and always gives the songs the right atmosphere. Wow! There are no weak songs! You can feel the passion and love that went into composing and playing each song. Every song is a stunner!

CRUACHAN

Die irische Band CRUACHAN (Facebook) haben mit „The Living and The Dead“ dieses Jahr ein grandioses Album veröffentlicht (Review). Für mich ist dieses Album die Krönung der langen Schaffensphase einer Band, die bereits seit 1992 musiziert. Es war mir deshalb eine Ehre und ein Vergnügen mit Gründer und Frontmann Keith ein Interview zu führen. Und ihr könnt mir glauben, dass Keith eine Menge interessanter Dinge zu erzählen hat.

Interview

MH: Hallo Keith. Vielen Dank für die Gelegenheit mit Dir ein Interview führen zu dürfen! Es ist nun schon eine Weile her, dass das Album „The Living and The Dead“ veröffentlicht wurde. Wie hast Du die Reaktionen der Leute auf die einzelnen Singles und letztendlich auf das ganze Album erlebt? Zumindest die Kritiken in einschlägigen Magazinen haben nur lobende Worte für das Album übrig.

Keith: Hallo, es ist mir wie immer ein Vergnügen. Ja, es war ziemlich erstaunlich, die Reaktionen und die Wertschätzung für das Album zu sehen. Nach all dieser Zeit ist es großartig, die Bestätigung von Gleichgesinnten zu bekommen, von Leuten, die Folk Metal lieben, dass ich immer noch etwas richtig mache. Man kann mit Fug und Recht behaupten, dass dies das bisher am besten rezensierte Cruachan-Album ist, und diese Art von Lob zu sehen, spornt mich nur an, weiterzumachen und immer mehr großartige Musik zu machen.

Schwere Zeiten

MH: Es sollte nicht vergessen werden, dass es eine Zeit gab, in der nicht klar war, ob CRUACHAN weitermachen würde, nicht wahr?  Woher hast du die Kraft genommen, weiterzumachen?

Keith: Nun, das ist nicht ganz richtig! Ich habe definitiv in einigen Interviews oder Facebook-Posts gesagt, dass, als einige Mitglieder Cruachan verließen, viele Leute darüber nachgedacht haben, aufzuhören und die Band zu beenden. Aber das waren tatsächlich nicht meine Gedanken! Ich würde Cruachan niemals auflösen! Selbst wenn ich nur mit einer Gitarre in der Hand, einer Bassdrum auf dem Rücken und einer Mundharmonika im Mund dastehe, werde ich immer weitermachen.

Kraft durch gute Freunde

MH: Welche Rolle hat Joe Farrell dabei gespielt? Ich glaube, er ist ein sehr guter Freund von dir, nicht wahr? Hat er dir geholfen, CRUACHAN am Leben zu erhalten? 

Keith: Joe war und ist eine große Unterstützung und ein wirklich guter Freund von mir. Letztendlich hat er Joe Eric Fletcher ersetzt. Wir hatten einen Bassisten in der Band nach Eric, aber es hat nicht funktioniert und er wurde gebeten, 2020 zu gehen. Da kam Joe ins Spiel. Im Sommer, als John Ryan und Kieran Ball die Band aus eigenen Gründen und wegen eines Streits über „The Hawthorn“ verließen, war Joe zur Unterstützung da.

Das Personalkarussel

MH: Wie schwierig war es, die Band von Grund auf aufzubauen? Hattet ihr zu diesem Zeitpunkt schon bestimmte Musiker im Kopf oder wie gestaltete sich die Suche?

Keith: Es war nicht gerade ein Aufbau von Grund auf. Joe stieß Anfang 2020 wieder zur Band, zu dieser Zeit hatten Mauro und seine Familie die Entscheidung getroffen, nach Schweden zu ziehen, aber Covid verzögerte den Umzug, so dass Mauro bei uns blieb, während wir nach einem neuen Schlagzeuger suchten und auch bei den Aufnahmen von ‚The Hawthorn‘ mitspielen konnte, schließlich fanden wir Tom, der als Schlagzeuger einstieg.

Nach der Veröffentlichung von „The Hawthorn“ verließen John und Kieran die Band, so dass die Suche nach einem Geigenspieler Priorität hatte. Ich suchte auf Facebook nach einem Folk-Instrumentalisten. Ein paar Leute meldeten sich, aber es war Audrey, die herausstach. Sie ist ein phänomenales Talent, also nahmen wir sie an Bord. Seitdem sind wir zu viert, und ehrlich gesagt bin ich im Moment mit den Dingen zufrieden, so dass wir vielleicht zu viert bleiben werden.

Träume als Teenager

MH: Eure Band gibt es schon seit 1992, und eine so lange Karriere bringt normalerweise Höhen und Tiefen mit sich. Mit welchen Vorstellungen und Erwartungen habt ihr die Band damals gegründet? Hat die Realität deine Träume sehr schnell eingeholt oder warst du mit allem zufrieden?

Keith: Ich war noch ein junger Teenager, als ich die Band gründete, aber ich war und bin ein Träumer. Vor Cruachan war ich in einer Death-Metal-Band namens Crypt. Ich war 12 Jahre alt, der Rest der Band war im späten Teenageralter (kam mir aber wie ein alter Mann vor, haha).

Ich wollte ständig neue Dinge ausprobieren. Als ich sah, wie beliebt Nocturnus mit ihrem ‚Death Metal mit Keyboards‘ waren, war ich hin und weg und versuchte verzweifelt, die Jungs davon zu überzeugen, Keyboards hinzuzufügen, aber es funktionierte nicht. Letztendlich verließ ich Crypt, da ich mein eigenes Ding machen wollte, und so wurde Cruachan geboren.

Zu dieser Zeit begann ich, viel irische Folkmusik zu hören, und kam auf die Idee, diese mit Metal zu kombinieren. Ich wusste schon als Kind, dass dies eine bahnbrechende Sache in der Metalwelt sein würde. Und ich glaubte, ich würde einen Plattenvertrag bekommen und Cruachan würde das nächste große Ding werden. Ich habe den Plattenvertrag bekommen und ich habe geholfen, das Folk-Metal-Genre zu begründen. Darüber bin ich mehr als glücklich.

Die Realität holte mich allerdings ein,

als ich merkte, dass ich einen Tagesjob brauche. Rückblickend bin ich glücklich. Viele Bands, die heute als erfolgreich gelten, mussten große Opfer bringen, um dorthin zu gelangen. Cruachan sind respektiert und bekannt, und ich musste weder meine eigene Karriere noch meine Familie aufgeben, um das zu erreichen. Natürlich denke ich daran, wie viel erfolgreicher wir hätten sein können, wenn ich meine Arbeit aufgegeben und mich ausschließlich auf die Band konzentriert hätte. Ich musste es z.B. ablehnen, Alestorm auf einer Europatournee zu supporten und Arkona auf einer USA-Tournee, weil ich einfach wegen meines Berufs nicht so viel Zeit aufbringen kann. Trotz allem bin ich glücklich mit meinem Platz in der Musikwelt.

Kein Gewinn

MH: Ich habe einmal in einem Beitrag auf Ihrer Facebook-Seite gelesen, dass Ihr sehr lange Zeit keinen Cent Gewinn machen konnten. Das hätte sich erst jetzt geändert. Wie kann so etwas sein?

Keith: Ja, das ist sehr wohl wahr! In unserer gesamten Zeit bei Hammerheart Records haben wir nichts verdient. Auch heute noch machen wir sehr wenig. Es ist eindeutig etwas falsch daran, wenn man mit all den Hammerheart-Alben keinen Penny verdient, aber ich hatte nie die Energie oder das Interesse, das legal zu verfolgen. Ja, ich weiß, dass Leute mit dieser Art von Plattenfirmen Millionäre geworden sind, während ihre eigenen Bands sich abmühen. Ich wünschte, das wäre nicht der Fall, aber es ist, wie es ist. Ich weiß nicht genug über all das, um zu sagen, dass diese Leute schlecht oder falsch sind, aber ich weiß, dass es falsch ist, dass ihre Bands nichts verdienen. Tourneen und Merchandise sind es, wo das Geld herkommt.

DESPOTZ RECORDS

MH: Ihr habt jetzt bei Despotz Records unterschrieben. Läuft die Zusammenarbeit jetzt besser? Was würdet ihr neuen Bands raten? Label ja oder nein? Heutzutage ist es dank der fortschreitenden Technologie nicht mehr notwendig, ein Label zu haben, um ein Album oder ein Video zu produzieren.

Keith: Despotz ist das beste Label, bei dem wir je waren. Sie sind kleiner als einige der größeren Labels, mit denen wir gearbeitet haben (Candlelight, AFM usw.), aber sie sind so engagiert, ehrlich und arbeiten hart.

Gründer Omer hat einen unternehmerischen Geist. Er will Erfolg haben! Er will der Beste sein! Aber er will das nicht um den Preis! Er zieht seine Bands nicht über den Tisch. Deshalb besitzt er das größte Alt-Label in Schweden. Respekt für seine Bands muss man ihm zollen, und das tut er auch, das ist es, was bei unseren früheren Labels fehlte (nicht alle, Trollzorn zum Beispiel wurde von absolut anständigen und guten Leuten geführt).

LABEL- Ja oder Nein?

Was die Frage angeht, ob man bei einem Label sein sollte oder nicht, weiß ich es nicht, ich weiß es wirklich nicht. Ich persönlich ziehe es vor, da ich außerhalb der Musik eine sehr umfangreiche und intensive Karriere habe. Ich könnte nicht so viel Zeit und Energie in die Arbeit mit einem Label stecken. Wenn du zu Hause aufnimmst, kannst du vielleicht großartige Musik machen, aber du wirst höchstwahrscheinlich nicht über das umfassende Wissen, die Erfahrung und die vertrauenswürdigen Kontakte verfügen, die eine etablierte Plattenfirma hat. Sie werden es schwer haben, gehört zu werden. Ich werde immer sagen, dass Ihr euch an die Labels wenden solltet, wenn eure Band gut genug ist oder euer Ruf stark genug ist, dass ein Plattenlabel mit euch arbeiten möchte.

Das ist nämlich eine andere Sache … einige Bands müssen auch selbst arbeiten, weil sie beschissene Musik machen und es nicht merken. Sie reden immer wieder davon, dass sie kein Plattenlabel brauchen, aber die Realität ist, dass ein Plattenlabel sie in einer Million Jahren nicht anfassen würde.

Die Szene im Wandel

MH: Wie hast du den Wandel der Musikszene im Laufe der Jahre erlebt und empfunden?

Keith: Wenn ich speziell über Folk Metal spreche, dann hat es einen solchen Wandel gegeben. Als Cruachan anfingen, gab es nur uns und Skyclad. Ein Jahr später hatten wir Waylander, Bran Barr … ein paar andere, aber die Szene war nicht cool und sehr unterirdisch. Eine Sache zu den Bands, die ich erwähnt habe: Sie sind alle Folk-Metal …., aber sie sind nicht diese weit verbreitete „Party-Time“-„Lasst uns trinken, bis wir umfallen“-Art von Folk-Metal, die in den 00er Jahren so beliebt wurde. Das war die Folk-Metal-Explosion. Es war interessant zu sehen, wie populär das Genre wurde, aber ich glaube, es war die falsche Art von Folk Metal, die populär wurde und deshalb gezüchtigt und beschimpft wurde.

Dieser lustige Stil war einfach nicht das, was eine irische Folkband sein konnte. Folk-Musik ist nicht lustig, sicher gibt es einige lustige Seiten. Ein Jig wird immer fröhlich und unnahbar sein, aber dann gibt es noch die vielen anderen Facetten – die langsamen Airs, die traurigen, melancholischen und eindringlichen Lieder. In Irland erzählt die Folk-Musik die traurige Geschichte unseres Landes, und Irish Folk ist wohl die populärste Folk-Musik der Welt, so dass wir nie dieser alberne Party-Stil sein würden, der in Skandinavien so hochgekocht ist. Trotzdem bin ich froh, dass das passiert ist, denn dadurch haben viel mehr Leute Cruachan gehört.

Das Album „The Living and The Dead“

MH: Kommen wir zurück zum Jetzt! Das Album „The Living and The Dead“ ist sehr abwechslungsreich geworden. Es werden viele Stimmungen erzeugt, wobei auch verschiedene Emotionen eine Rolle spielen.

In welcher Zeitspanne sind die Songs entstanden? Kannst du ein paar Songs herausgreifen und kurz erklären, warum dir bestimmte Lieder aus persönlichen Gründen besonders am Herzen liegen?

Als ich mit dem Schreiben begann, wollte ich ein Album machen, das verschiedene Geschichten über das Leben in Irland in den Jahren 1600 und 1700 erzählt. Das ist eine wirklich interessante Zeit, ein sehr katholisches Land, aber immer noch ein sehr heidnisches Land. Viele Bräuche und Überzeugungen aus viel älteren Zeiten waren in dieser Zeit noch präsent und weit verbreitet.

„The Changeling“ und „The Harvest“ repräsentieren diese Zeit, aber ich habe viele der lyrischen Themen geändert, als der Bericht über die Mutter- und Babyheime in Irland veröffentlicht wurde. Bitte googeln Sie danach, um mehr darüber zu erfahren. Ich habe schon immer von diesen Heimen gewusst, von den Magdelin-Wäschereien, von dem insgesamt entsetzlichen Verhalten der katholischen Kirche hier.

Es gab im Laufe der Jahre viele Bücher und Filme darüber, aber als dieser Bericht veröffentlicht wurde, hatte er eine Wirkung auf mich, und ich beschloss, ein paar Lieder über dieses Thema zu schreiben. Die Hälfte des Albums basiert also auf diesem Thema, aber alles ist in typischer Cruachan-Manier miteinander verknüpft, z.B. geht es in The Crow eindeutig um die toten Kinder durch die Hände dieser Nonnen, aber die Krähe in dem Lied ist The Morrigan.

Ein Lied, das mir sehr am Herzen liegt,

ist „The Reaper“. Dieses Lied hat ein ganz anderes Thema als alle anderen, denn ich habe es über meinen Vater geschrieben, als er krank war und sich nicht um sich selbst kümmern konnte. Es ist ein Lied, das aus Frustration geschrieben wurde.

MH: Wie war es, das aufwendige Video „The Reaper“ zu drehen und die Rollen der Krieger zu spielen? Wie ist die Idee zu diesem epischen Video entstanden?

Keith: Es war furchtbar, ich habe es gehasst, um ehrlich zu sein. Wir sind sehr stolz auf das fertige Video, aber der Weg dorthin war eine echte Qual. Es war eiskalt, wir waren zwei Tage lang 18 Stunden unterwegs, mussten viel laufen und eine Menge Ausrüstung tragen. Habe ich schon die Kälte erwähnt? Vielleicht war es nicht ganz so schlimm, wie ich sage, aber es war eine Menge Arbeit. Ich bin Olga und Alan von Record Replay Productions sehr dankbar für ihre harte Arbeit an diesem (und den beiden anderen Videos) sowie der Jofur Drenger Reenactment Group, die das Video zu etwas ganz Besonderem gemacht hat.

Der Text des Liedes handelt von der Frustration

darüber, dass mein Vater sich nicht um sich selbst gekümmert hat und er schließlich gestorben ist. Ich konnte das nicht realistisch in ein wirklich cooles Folk-Metal-Video packen, also kam ich auf die Idee für dieses Video, um sein Andenken zu ehren, aber es ist viel mehr als das, es ist ein Spiegel seines tatsächlichen Todes. Der Grund, warum ich in dem Video sterbe, ist, dass ich mein Vater bin, ich musste derjenige sein, der stirbt. Die Szene in der Höhle spiegelt die gleiche Szene in der Realität wider, als ich in dem Schlafzimmer war, in dem er starb. Er lag in seinem Bett, während ich mit meinem Bruder (der im Video auch in der Höhle steht) und meiner Schwester dastand und weinend auf unseren Vater starrte, der im Schlaf gestorben war.

MH: In dem Video „The Hawthorne“ geht es um den Glauben an alte Traditionen. Glaubst Du auch an höhere Mächte? Bist Du ein Freund von Religionen?

Keith: Ich habe mich viele Jahre lang als Heide betrachtet und das sehr genossen. Die meisten Heiden sind sehr unbekümmerte und unbeschwerte Menschen. Als ich älter wurde, wurde ich auch zynischer, vielleicht auch intelligenter, aber kurz gesagt, ich glaube nicht mehr an eine höhere Macht. Ich sehe keine Möglichkeit, dass das möglich wäre. Ich sage immer noch, dass ich ein wünschenswerter Agnostiker sein möchte, wenn jemand beweisen würde, dass es eine höhere Macht oder ein Leben nach dem Tod gibt, wäre ich sehr glücklich darüber.

Fan von Harry Potter

MH: Welche Art von Geschichten oder Themen faszinieren Sie? Sind es eher Fantasiegeschichten oder reale Geschichten?

Keith: Ich bin eigentlich ein besessener Fan von Harry Potter (und Videospielen). Ich liebe die Bücher, die Filme, die Geschichte selbst, das Setting. Einfach alles. Ich sammle auch eine Menge Harry-Potter-Zeug, helfe bei einer HP-Convention hier in Dublin und betreibe meinen eigenen YouTube-Kanal (the metalhead potterhead) rund um das Sammeln von HP-Zeug. Ich spiele auch ein bisschen auf youtube (cruachankeith), aber all das hat vor kurzem aufgehört, als ich umgezogen bin, und ich plane, bald wieder damit anzufangen.

MH: Auf welche Live-Gigs freust du dich dieses Jahr am meisten? Was ist generell für Konzerte geplant?

Keith: Ein Konzert, das nicht von Cruachan ist, auf das ich mich hier in Dublin wirklich freue, ist Sacred Reich. Ich bin ein großer Thrash-Fan, es ist wahrscheinlich mein Lieblingsgenre und ich habe diese Jungs noch nie live gesehen, also kann ich es kaum erwarten. Für Cruachan steht im Oktober eine große Show in Dublin an, um das neue Album zu feiern, also hoffe ich, dass so viele Fans wie möglich zu dieser Show kommen können.

The Irish band CRUACHAN (Facebook) have released with „The Living and The Dead“ this year a terrific album (Review). This band exists since 1992 and for me, this album is the culmination of their career. Therefore it was an honor and a pleasure for me to do an interview with founder and frontman Keith. And you can believe me that Keith has a lot of interesting things to tell.

Interview

MH: Hello Keith. Thanks for having us! It’s been a little while now since the album „The Living and The Dead“ was released. How have you found people’s reactions to the individual singles and ultimately to the whole album? At least The reviews in relevant magazines have only praising words for the album.

Keith: Hi there, a pleasure as always. Yes it’s been pretty amazing to see the response and appreciation to the album. After all this time it is great to have the confirmation from my peers, from people that love folk metal, that I am still doing something right. It’s fair to say that this has been the best reviewed Cruachan album to date and seeing that kind of praise just want me to keep going and making more and more great music.

Bad times

MH: It should not be forgotten that there was a time when it wasn’t clear whether CRUACHAN would continue, was it?  Where did you get the strength to continue?Where did you get the strength to continue?

Keith: Well that’s not entirely true. I definintely did say in some interviews or facebook post that, when some members left Cruachan, a lot of people may have thought about calling it a day and ending the band, but that was not my thoughts. I would never end Cruachan. Even it’s just me with a guitar in hadn, bass drum on my back and a harmonica in my mouth, I will keep going on and on.

Great friends

MH: What role did Joe Farrell play in that? I think he’s a very good friend of yours, isn’t he? Did he help you keep CRUACHAN alive? 

Keith: Joe was and is a great support and is a really dear friend of mine. Ultimately Joe replaced Eric Fletcher, we did have a bass player in the band after Eric but it didn’t work out and he was asked to leave in 2020, that’s where Joe came in. It was during the summer when John Ryan and Kieran Ball left for their own reasons and an argument over ‚The Hawthorn‘ that Joe was there for support.

Search for musicians

MH: How hard was it to build the band from scratch? Did you already have certain musicians in mind at that time or how did the search turn out?

Keith: It wasn’t exaclty building from scratch. Joe re-joined in early 2020, around this time Mauro and his family had made the decision to move to Sweden but covid delayed their move so Mauro remained with is while we looked for a new drummer and was also able to play on the recording of ‚The Hawthorn‘, ultimtely we found Tom who came in on drums. After the release of ‚The Hawthorn‘ John and Kieran left, the priority then was to find a violin player.

I advertied on facebook for a folk instrumentalist, a few people got in touch but it was Audrey that stood out, she is a phenomenonal talent so we took her on board. We have been a four piece since then and honestly am happy with things right now so may remain a four piece.

Dreams as a teenager

MH: Your band has been around since 1992, and such a long career usually brings ups and downs. With which ideas and expectations did you found the band at that time? Did reality catch up with your dreams very fast or were you satisfied with everything?

Keith: I was just a young teenager when I started the band but I was, and am, a dreamer. Before Cruachan I was in a death metal band called Crypt. I was 12 years old, the rest of the band were in their late teens (but seemed like old men to me haha). I was constantly asking to try new things. When I seen how popular Nocturnus were with their ‚Death Metal with keyboards‘ I was blown away and desperately tried to convince the guys to add keyboards, it didn’t work. Ultimately I left Crypt as I wanted to do my own thing and that’s where Cruachan was born.

At the time I was starting to listen to a lot of Irish folk music and got the idea then to combine this with metal. I knew, even as a kid, that this would be a ground breaking thing to do in the metal world, and I think I believed I would get a record deal and Cruachan would be the next big thing. I did get the record deal and I did help found the folk metal genre so am happy about all of that.

Reality did catch up though

as I also realised I need a day job. Looking back I am happy. A lot of bands that would be considered succesful had to make huge sacrifices to get there. Cruachan are respected and well known and Ive not had to give up on my own career or family to make that happen. Of course I look at how much more succesful we could have been had I given up work and focused solely on the band. I;ve had to turn down supporting Alestorm on a European tour, supproting Arkona on a USA tour because I just cannot get that amount of time from work but all in all, I’m happy with my place in the music world.

No profit

MH: I once read in a post on your Facebook page that you could not make a penny profit for a very long time. This would have changed only now. How can such a thing be?

Keith: Yes it’s very true. In our entire time on Hammerheart records we made nothing. Still to this day we make very little. There is clearly something wrong with not making a penny from all those Hammerheart albums but I’ve never had the energy or interest to pursue it legally. Yes I know people have become millionaires with these type of record labels while their sigend bands struggle, I wish that was not the case but it is what it is. I don’t know enought about it all to even say these people are bad or wrong, but I know it’s wrong that their bands make nothing. Touring and merchandise is where the money comes from.

Despotz Records

MH: You have now signed with Despotz Records. Is the collaboration going better now? What would you advise new bands? Label yes or no? Nowadays, thanks to advancing technology, it is no longer necessary to have a label to produce an album or a video.

Keith: Despotz are the best label we have ever been on. They are smaller than some of the bigger labels we worked with (Candlelight, AFM etc) but are so commited, honest and hard working. Omer, the owner, has an entrepreneurial spirit, he wants to succeed, he wants to be the best but he does not want that at the cost of screwing his bands over. That’s why he own the biggest alt label in Sweden. Respect for your bands is free to give and he does that, that is what was missing on our previous labels (not all, Trollzorn, for example, were run by absolutely decent and good people).

Label- Yes or No?

As for whether or not to be on a label, I don’t know, I really don’t. Personally, I prefer it as I have a very full on and intense career outside of music. I could not put the amount of time and energy into doing the record label side of things. If you record at home, yes you may make some great music but you most likely won’t have the depth of knowledge, experience and trusted contacts that a well established record label has. You will struggle to get heard. I will always say look to the labels, if you’re band is good enough or your reputation is strong enough to warrant a record label wanting to work you.

That’s another thing … some bands also have to work on their own because they make shit music and don’t realise it. They go on and on about not needing a record labe but the reality is a record label wouldn’t touch them in a million years.

Changing of the musical world

MH: How did you experience and feel the change of the music scene over the years?

Keith: Talking specifically about Folk Metal, there has been such a change. When Cruachan started, there was only us and Skyclad. A year later we had Waylander, Bran Barr … a few others, but the scene was not cool and was very underground. One thing about the bands I mentioned, they are all folk metal …. but they are not that more prevalent ‚party time‘ ‚let’s drink till we fall over‘ type of folk metal that became so popular throughout the 00’s. That was the folk metal explosion. It was interesting to see just how popular the genre became but I feel it was the wrong type of folk metal that became popular, and therefor chastised and berated.

That funny style was just simply not a thing an Irish folk band could be. Folk music is not funny, sure there are some funny sides to it. A jig will always be lighthearted and aloof but then there are the many other facets – the slow airs, the sad, melancholy nad haunting songs. In Ireland, folk music tells the sad history of our country and Irish folk is arguably the most popular folk music on earth so we would never be that silly party style that blew up over in Scandinavia. Having said that, I’m glad that happened as it got a lot more people listening to Cruachan.

The album „The Living and The Dead“

MH: Let’s get back to now! The album „The Living and The Dead“ has become very varied. Many  moods are created, with different emotions also playing a role.

In which period of time did the songs come into being? Could you pick up a few songs and briefly explain why certain songs are particularly close to your heart for personal reasons?

Keith: The intention when I started writing was to have an album telling various tales of life in Ireland during the 1600’s and 1700’s. This is a really interesting time, a very Catholic country but still a very Pagan country. So many customs and beliefs from much older times were still present and very prevalent during this period. The Changeling and The Harvest represent this period but I changed a lot of the lyrical themes when the mother and baby homes report was published in Ireland. Please google that to find out more. I have always known about these homes, the Magdelin laundries, the overall horrendous behavior of the Catholic church here.

Close to the heart

There have been many books and movies about it over the years, but when this report was published, it had an effect on me and I decided to write a few songs on this subject. So half the album is based on this but all tied together in typical Cruachan fashion, for example The Crow is clearly about the dead children at the hands of these nuns but the crow in the song is The Morrigan. One song that is very close to my heart is The Reaper, this song has a very different theme to any other song as I wrote this about my father while he was ill and not taking care of himself. It’s a song written out of frustration.

MH: What was it like shooting the elaborate video „The Reaper“ and playing the roles of the warriors? How did the idea for this epic video come about?

Keith: It was awful, I hated it to be honest. We are very proud of the finished video but to get there was a real pain. It was freezing cold, we were out for 18 hours for two days, lots and lots of walking carrying lots and lots of gear and equipment. Did I mention the cold? Maybe it wasn’t quite as bad as I am saying but it was a lot of work. I am so grateful to both Olga and Alan at Record Replay Productions for their hard work on this (and the other two videos) as well as the Jofur Drenger re-enactment group for making the video so special.

The lyrics of „The Reaper“ are about the frustration

with my dad not taking care of himself, he eventually did die. I couldn’t realistically put that into a really cool folk metal video so came up with the idea for this video as a way to honour his memory but it’s a lot more than that, it’s a mirror of him actually dying. The reason I die in the video is because I am my father, I had to be the one to die. The scene in the cave mirrors the same scene in reality when I was in the bedroom he died in, he was lying in his bed while I stood there with my brother (also standing in that cave in the video) and my sister, in tears, staring at our father who had died in his sleep.

MH: The video „The Hawthorne“ is about the belief in ancient traditions. Do you also believe in higher powers? Are you a friend of religions?

Keith: For many years I considered myself a Pagan and really enjoyed this. Most pagans are very carefree and easy going people. As i got older I also got more cynical, more intelligent too maybe, but in short I no longer believe in any higher power. I see no way that it would be possible. I still say I want to be a wishful agnostic, if someone proved there was a higher power or life after death I would be very happy about that.

A big fan of Harry Potter

MH: What kind of stories or themes fascinate you? Are they more fantasy stories or real ones ?

Keith: I’m actually an obsessive fan of Harry Potter (and video games). I love the books, the movies, the story itself, the setting. Everything. I collect a lot of Harry Potter stuff too, help run a HP convention here in Dublin and do my own youtube channel (the metalhead potterhead) all around collecting HP stuff. I also do some gaming on youtube (cruachankeith) but all of this stopped recently while I was moving home and am planning to get back into it soon.

MH: Which live gigs are you looking forward to most this year? What is generally planned for concerts?

Keith: One non Cruachan gig I’m really looking forward to here in Dublin is Sacred Reich. I am a hugh Thrash fan, it’s probably my favourite genre and I;ve never seen these guys live so cannot wait for that. For Cruachan, we have a big Dublin show coming in October, celebrating the new album so hoping as many fans as possible can make it to that show.

„The Queen“ ist eine Reise durch verschiedene Welten. Es startet beschwingt und fröhlich, wobei es nicht lange dauert bis Sänger Keith seine fiesen Vocals rauslässt. Man bindet folkloritische Parts ein, die zum feiern und träumen verführen und am Ende wechselt der Song in ein krachendes Finale.

BLACK & DAMNED

sind bei ‚metal-heads.de‘ keine Unbekannten. Bereits das erste Album „Heavenly Creatures“ (Review) war ne Bombe und nun folgt am 28. April das zweite Kracheralbum „Servants Of The Devil“ (Review). War die erste Single „Hyena’s Call“ von BLACK & DAMNED (Facebook) noch eine treibende Power Metal Nummer, so schraubt man das Tempo nun runter und bewegt sich im Midtepmo. Das tut der massiven Präsenz des Sounds aber keinen Abbruch. Echt ne fette Nummer mit herrlichen Riffs und auch sonst allem, was dazugehört.

DYING OATH

kommen aus Virginia und trumpfen mit modernem Metalcore auf. Es ist mittlerweile kein Geheimnis mehr und spätestens sei ARCH ENEMY weiß man, dass Frauen den Männern in Sachen Energie in nichts nachstehen. Ein sehr gelungene Mischung bieten DYING OATH (Facebook / Homepage), wo sich Frau und Mann stimmlich an den Vocals beteiligen. Ist zwar nix neues, aber hier ist es ungewöhnlich, dass Sängerin Mindy Jackson für die harten Töne zuständig ist und der Sänger Nestor Idler die cleanen Vocals beisteuert, wobei sie dies manchmal auch im Duett machen.

Der Song macht mächtig Dampf und setzt eine Menge Energie frei. Hier stimmt alles. Die Growls könnten nicht fieser und brutaler klingen und die melodischen cleanen Vocals schmeicheln sich ins Ohr. Instrumental läuft alles wie am Schnürchen. Krasse Riffs, fetter Bass und brutale Drums vereinigen sich zu einem wahrlich beeindruckenden Erlebnis.

In-Tension

sind ein krasser Kontrast zu der gerade vorgestellten Band. IN-TENSION (Facebook) kommen aus den Niederlanden und gehen die Sache melodischer an, aber eine knackige Härte kommt ebenfalls zum Vorschein. Die Sängerin Noor ist durchweg mit wundervollen cleanen Vocals am Start. Ich jedenfalls war verzaubert von ihrer wunderschönen glasklaren Stimme. Dazu gesellen sich noch atmosphärische Synthies und Keys, welche für zusätzliche Ausstrahlung sorgen und auch mit den Gitarren super harmonieren. Der progressive Ansatz des Songs ist super gelungen und in seinem Zauber geradezu episch. Eine märchenhafte Komposition!

IN-TENSION werden in nächster Zeit noch weitere Singles veröffentlichen und höchstwahrscheinlich wird noch ein Album folgen. Genaueres steht aber noch nicht fest.

CRUACHAN

have released a new video for their fantastic album „The Living and The Dead“ (Review) for the song „The Queen“. The song is an epic journey, which CRUACHAN (Homepage / Facebook) have covered with a beautiful lyric video. Must be seen and heard!

„The Queen“ is a journey through different worlds. It starts upbeat and happy, but it doesn’t take long until singer Keith lets out his nasty vocals. Folkloric parts are integrated, which seduce to celebrate and dream. At the end the song changes into a crashing finale.

BLACK & DAMNED

are well known to ‚metal-heads.de‘. Already the first album „Heavenly Creatures“ (Review) of BLACK & DAMNED (Facebook) was a bomb and now follows on April 28th the second album „Servants Of The Devil“ (Review). While the first single „Hyena’s Call“ was still a driving Power Metal beast, the tempo on „Dreamhunter“ is now lowered and moves in the mid-tempo. But this does not detract from the massive presence of the sound. Really strong sound with wonderful riffs and everything else that you wish for.

DYING OATH

come from Virginia and come up with modern Metalcore. It’s no secret anymore and since ARCH ENEMY at the latest, it’s known that women are in no way inferior to men when it comes to energy. A very exciting mixture offers DYING OATH (Facebook / Homepage), where woman and man participate vocally. It’s nothing new, but here it’s unusual that female singer Mindy Jackson is responsible for the hard tones and male singer Nestor Idler contributes the clean vocals. And they also like to sing as a duet.

The song offers a lot of power and releases a lot of energy. Everything is right in place here. The growls could not sound nastier and more brutal and the melodic clean vocals flatter themselves into the ear. Instrumentally, everything runs like clockwork. Crass riffs, fat bass and brutal drums combine to create a truly impressive experience.

In-Tension

are a stark contrast to the band presented above. IN-TENSION (Facebook) come from the Netherlands and take a more melodic approach, but a crunchy heaviness comes out as well. Vocalist Noor is on point throughout with wonderful clean vocals. I, for one, was enchanted by her beautiful crystal clear voice. In addition, there are atmospheric synths and keys, which provide additional charisma and also harmonize with the guitars. The progressive approach of the song is great and almost epic in its magic. A fairy-tale composition!

IN-TENSION will release more singles in the near future and most likely an album will follow. But more details are not fixed yet.

Irish Folk Metal

CRUACHAN (Facebook) haben eine lange Tradition, denn sie musizieren seit 1992 und wie man sich vorstellen kann, hat die Band viel durchgemacht. Viele Höhen, aber auch einige Tiefpunkte. Am Ende stand Gründer Keith Fay in der Corona-Pandemie fast allein dar, nachdem er schon Songs für das neue Album geschrieben hatte. Und er hatte schon immer starke Visionen. Stillstand oder gar Aufgeben war nie eine Option für ihn und er strebte immer nach mehr. Und so traf er eine Entscheidung, die eigentlich nie in Frage stand, denn diese Band ist Teil seines Lebens, Teil seines Herzens. Er würde es nie freiwillig herausreißen.

Statement von Gründer, Sänger & Gitarrist Keith Fay:

Dieses Album musste gut sein. Nein, es musste besser als gut sein. Es musste das beste CRUACHAN-Album werden, das je gemacht wurde. Im Jahr 2020, mitten in der Pandemie, stand ich vor einer Entscheidung, als drei Bandmitglieder die Band verließen. Mache ich Schluss oder mache ich weiter mit der Mammutaufgabe, alle zu ersetzen? Es gab keine wirkliche Entscheidung zu treffen, ich hatte über die Jahre viel zu hart gearbeitet, um zuzulassen, dass CRUACHAN sich auflöst. In den letzten Jahren hatte ich einige der besten Stücke meiner Karriere geschrieben. Ich sicherte mir einen Plattenvertrag mit einem Label (Despotz Records aus Schweden), das genau verstand, was CRUACHAN und meine Vision ist.

haben dieses Album geprägt. Hier präsentieren sich viele Eindrücke und Emotionen, die in verschiedenen Geschichten dargeboten werden. Und auch Geschichten aus der heidnischen Mythologie werden verarbeitet.

Den Rahmen des Albums bilden die beiden Tracks „The Living“ und „The Dead“. Hierbei wird der Opener „The Living“ seinem Namen mehr als gerecht. Dementsprechend ist der Instrumentaltrack ein gutgelauntes Stück Musik und sorgt im Handumdrehen für gute Stimmung und fördert den Drang zum Tanzen oder sich ein kühles Bier die Kehle runterrinnen zu lassen. Mehr Folk Metal geht nicht! Es rockt wie der Teufel. Die folkischen Instrumenten harmonieren wunderbar mit den Gitarrenriffs. Darüber hinaus feuern die Drums den Sound an und die Geige bringt das Ding völlig zum Brennen. Hier sticht Audrey Trainor, die seit ihrem vierten Lebensjahr Violine spielt, als begnadete Musikerin ebenfalls hervor. Darüber hinaus lässt sich positiv feststellen, dass der gesamte Sound den rauen Ton der alten Zeit versprüht. Er ist hart, direkt und authentisch. Die Produktion passt optimal zu dieser Musik und diesem Album.

Das Outro „The Dead“ klingt dagegen wesentlich dunkler und aggressiver. Es beginnt bedächtig mit schwermütigen Violinenklängen, doch zum Ende der ersten Minute wird es zu einem aggressiven vernichtenden Angriff. Zum Ende schließt sich der Kreis, indem die Wut endet und dem Hörer sanft melancholisch aus dem Album geleitet wird. Doch ich bin mir sicher, dass jeder direkt die Wiederholungstaste drücken wird, um die Reise sofort von vorne zu beginnen.

„The Queen“

ist der zweite und auch längste Track. Und man darf hier sogar von progressiven Ansätzen sprechen, wobei es natürlich nicht zu kompliziert wird. Alle Stimmungen fließen ineinander und finden sich harmonisch zusammen. Dabei führt der Fluß durch unterschiedliche Welten, so dass „The Queen“ an sich schon eine epische Reise vollzieht. Deshalb bin ich hier schon bei der ersten Etappe total überwältigt angesichts der vielen verschiedenen Ufern und Orten, an denen ich vorbeitreibe. Es startet beschwingt und fröhlich, wobei es nicht lange dauert bis Sänger Keith seine fiesen Vocals rauslässt.

Dann folgt eine toller melodischer reiner Folkpart mit passendem klassischen Gesang. Anschließend ergießt sich ein epischer Instrumentalpart mit sehr atmosphärischer Ausstrahlung, in dem man sich wunderbar verlieren kann. Einfach nur schön! Ein fließender Übergang geleitet den Hörer wieder in den gitarrenlastigen treibenden Part und der Song gewinnt wieder an Kraft und Masse mit einem krachenden Schlusspart, der kein Stein auf dem anderen lässt. Was für ein monumentales Erlebnis!

Traditionen

„The Hawthorne“ hat eine ruhigere Ausstrahlung und versprüht eine Traurigkeit, passend zur Geschichte, die hier erzählt wird. Es gibt eine Erläuterung seitens der Band dazu:

Der Weißdornbaum ist ein Feenbaum. Man sieht ihn überall in Irland an seltsamen Orten wachsen, wo andere Bäume gefällt worden wären. Es bringt aber Unglück, einen Weißdornbaum zu fällen, weil man sonst das Feenvolk verärgert.

In dem Lied nimmt die Frau ihr totes Baby mit, um es unter dem Baum zu begraben und den Feen zu schenken. Wir wissen nicht, wie das Baby gestorben ist oder was zu dieser Entscheidung geführt hat, aber sie ist in ihren Gewohnheiten verhaftet und das Baby wird kein christliches Begräbnis bekommen.

Lass jucken Kumpel!

Neben den etwas melancholisch Momenten verstehen sich CRUACHAN aber vor allem darauf mächtig Stimmung zu machen. Das gelingt einerseits durch krachende Songs, die es an Härte nicht missen lassen. Dabei ist der Track „The Ghost“ als brachialste Version in dieser Hinsicht zu entdecken. Hier gibt auch Mathias ‘Vreth’ Lillmåns von FINNTROLL sein Gastspiel als Sänger. Und das passt wie die Faust aufs Auge. Ein sehr aggressiver Track, der keine Gefangenen macht. Ultrascharfe Riffs, wilde Drums und fiese Vocals prägen diesen Song.

Ansonsten ist man nicht immer ganz so finster unterwegs, sondern sorgt mit klassischem Folkfeeling in Verbindung mit feurigen rockigen Metalparts für Stimmung. „The Crow“ ist ein Paradebeispiel dafür.

Das mysteriöse „The Changeling“

schlägt wieder in eine völlig andere Richtung. Bei diesem Song dominiert zunächst das sehr fesselnde Duett mit Gastsänger Jon Campling und Gastsängerin Nella. Dem Song wohnt eine unheimliche Note inne, wobei noch eine sehr martialische Wandlung stattfindet.

Ein richtiger Rock ’n‘ Roller ist der Song „The Witch“. Der Song geht fröhlich frech nach vorne und macht voll gute Laune! Hier wird ein wildes Fest gefeiert, wozu auch das tolle Solo von Gastgitarrist Stu ‘La Rage’ Dixon hervorragend passt.

„The Reaper“ war die Single des neuen Albums, auf welche ich aufmerksam wurde. Und dieser Song hat mich mit seiner Intensität berührt. „The Reaper“ hat mich die letzten Wochen fast täglich begleitet, denn ich konnte und kann mich nicht satt hören an diesem Meisterwerk. Eingeleitet mit einem fetten schweren Bass erklingt dieser zunächst majestätische Brecher. Der eingestreute Chorus, welcher nur mit der Violine begleitet wird, kontrastiert mit den schweren Strophen. Und was sich dann im instrumentalen Zwischenspiel eröffnet, ist eine emotional epische Offenbarung, die das Herz mit Emotionen flutet. Dieser Song vereint zwei verschiedene Welten in sich. Erst später habe ich erfahren, dass der Song geschrieben wurde, als der Vater von Keath starb. Das gibt diesem Song noch viel mehr Bedeutung.

Fazit

CRUACHAN haben mit „The Living and The Dead“ ein Meisterwerk des Folk Metal erschaffen. Die Fusion von Folk und Metal ist phänomenal gelungen. Dieses Album ist sozusagen ein Schwert, das aus Damast-Stahl geschmiedet wurde. Es besteht aus vielen verschiedenen Schichten, die am Ende eine hartes scharfes Schwert liefern, aber gleichzeitig ist es mit diversen Maserungen kunstvoll verziert.

Das Album ist so abwechslungsreich und zugleich unterhaltsam gestaltet, dass nicht ein Moment der Langeweile aufkommt. Ganz im Gegenteil! Man ist schier überwältigt von den genial komponierten Songs. Dazu kommen die hochprofessionellen Musiker, die dem ganzen Sound die Seele verleihen, durch die diese Musik zum Leben erwacht. Die klassischen Instrumente werden vortrefflich dargeboten und perfektionieren den Folk Faktor. Doch die Violine ist ein wahrgewordener Traum und schenkt den Songs immer wieder die passende Atmosphäre. Wahnsinn! Es gibt keine schwachen Songs! Man merkt jedem Song das Herzblut und die Liebe an, mit dem er komponiert und gespielt wurde. Jeder Song ist eine Wucht!

Dies ist ein Album, wo die 10 Punkte unserer Skala eigentlich nicht ausreichen. Und ich bin jetzt schon total überwältigt von den ganzen genialen Alben, die bereits in diesem Jahr veröffentlicht wurden. Gerade der 24.03.2023 ist ein Datum, an dem sehr viele fantastische Alben in vielen verschiedenen Kategorien veröffentlicht werden. Von mir aus kann es so weitergehen, auch wenn die Wahl für die Top List 2023 eine verdammt schwierige Angelegenheit wird. An die Wahl zum Album des Jahres will ich gar nicht erst denken.

Die Metalszene lebt und wir sollten sie weiter am Leben erhalten und unterstützen. Also bitte kauft die Alben und den Merch! Ich kann nicht oft genug wiederholen wie wichtig das ist. Das betrifft auch die Vorbestellungen von Alben oder Karten für Konzerte. Wenn ich an Eurer Stelle wäre, würde ich das Album schnellstens vorbestellen, denn es gibt nur eine limitierte Edition der goldenen Vinyls. Ich habe mir eine gesichert, und zwar hier:

Irish Folk Metal

CRUACHAN (Facebook) have a long tradition, because they have been making music since 1992 and as you can imagine, the band has been through a lot. Many highs, but also some lows. In the end, founder Keith Fay is left almost alone in the Corona pandemic, having already written songs for the new album. He always had strong visions. Standing still or even giving up was never an option for him and he always strived for more. And so he made a decision that was actually never in question, because this band is part of his life, blood of his heart. He would never tear it out voluntarily.

This album had to be good. No, it had to be better than good. It had to be the best CRUACHAN album ever made. In 2020, in the midst of the pandemic, I was faced with a decision when three band members left the band. Do I call it a day or continue with the mammoth task of replacing everyone? There was no real decision to make, I had worked way too hard over the years to allow CRUACHAN to break up. Over the last few years I had written some of the best songs of my career. I secured a record deal with a label (Despotz Records from Sweden) that understood exactly what CRUACHAN and my vision was.

have shaped this album. This is what often happens in the rock and metal world. So many impressions and emotions, which are presented here in different stories. And also stories from pagan mythology are processed.

The album is framed by the two tracks „The Living“ and „The Dead“. The opener „The Living“ more than lives up to its name. This instrumental track is a good-humored piece of music and creates a good mood in no time and promotes the urge to dance or let a cold beer run down your throat. You can’t get more folk metal than this! It rocks like hell. The folk instruments harmonize wonderfully with the guitar riffs. The drums fire up the sound and the violin totally sets the thing on fire. Audrey Trainor is a gifted violinist. She has been playing since she was four years old. The whole sound exudes the raw sound of the old days. In addition, the sound exudes the rough tone of the old days. It is hard, direct and authentic. The production fits perfectly to this music and this album.

The outro „The Dead“, on the other hand, sounds much darker and more aggressive. It begins thoughtfully with melancholy violin sounds, but by the end of the first minute it becomes an aggressive crushing attack. Towards the end, it comes full circle as the rage ends and the listener is led out of the album gently melancholy. But I’m sure everyone will hit the repeat button right away to start the journey all over again.

„The Queen“

is the second and also longest track. And one may even speak of progressive approaches here, whereby it doesn’t get too complicated, of course. All moods flow into each other and come together harmoniously. The flow leads through different worlds, so that this song „The Queen“ in itself completes an epic journey. I’m totally overwhelmed by all the different shores and places I’m drifting by. It starts off upbeat and happy, with it not taking long for singer Keith to let out his nasty vocals.

Then follows a great melodic pure folk part with matching classical vocals. Then pours an epic instrumental part with very atmospheric charisma, in which you can lose yourself wonderfully. Damn beautiful! A smooth transition leads the listener back into the guitar-heavy driving part and the song gains power and mass again with a crashing final part that leaves no stone unturned. What a monumental experience!

Traditions

„The Hawthorne“ has a quieter vibe and exudes a sadness, fitting for the story being told here. There is an explanation on the part of the band about it:

The hawthorn tree is a fairy tree. It is seen growing all over Ireland in strange places where other trees would have been cut down. However, it is bad luck to cut down a hawthorn tree because otherwise you will anger the fairy folk. In the song, the woman takes her dead baby to bury it under the tree and give it to the fairies. We don’t know how the baby died or what led to this decision, but she is stuck in her ways and the baby will not get a Christian burial.

Let it rip dude!

In addition to the somewhat melancholic moments, CRUACHAN know how to create a powerful sound. This succeeds by cracking songs, which don‘ t lack hardness. The track „The Ghost“ is the most brute version in this respect. Here also Mathias ‚Vreth‘ Lillmåns from FINNTROLL gives his guest performance as a singer. And that fits like a glove. A very aggressive track that takes no prisoners. Ultra sharp riffs, wild drums and nasty vocals characterize this song.

Otherwise, one is not always quite so sinister on the way, but provides with classic folk feeling in connection with fiery rocky metal parts a burning experience. „The Crow“ is a prime example of this.

The mysterious „The Changeling“

strikes again in a completely different direction. This song is initially dominated by the very captivating duet with guest singer Jon Campling and guest singer Nella. The song has an eerie note, whereby a very martial transformation takes place.

A real rock ’n‘ roller is the song „The Witch“. The song goes cheerfully cheeky forward and makes full good mood! Here is a wild celebration, to which also the great solo of guest guitarist Stu ‚La Rage‘ Dixon fits perfectly.

„The Reaper“ was the single from the new album that caught my attention. And this song touched me with its intensity. „The Reaper“ has accompanied me almost daily for the last few weeks, because I could not and can not get enough of this masterpiece.

Introduced with a fat heavy bass sounds this initially majestic breaker. The interspersed chorus, which is accompanied only by the violin, contrasts with the heavy verses. And what opens up in the instrumental interlude is an emotionally epic revelation that floods the heart with emotion. This song combines two different worlds. It wasn’t until later that I learned that the song was written when Keath’s father passed by. That gives this song that much more meaning.

Conclusion

CRUACHAN created a masterpiece of folk metal with „The Living and The Dead“. The fusion of folk and metal is phenomenally successful. This album is, so to speak, a sword forged from Damascus steel. It consists of many different layers, which in the end provide a hard sharp sword, but at the same time it is artfully decorated with various grains.

The album is so varied and at the same time entertainingly designed that not a moment of boredom arises. Quite the opposite! One is almost overwhelmed by the ingeniously composed songs. In addition, the highly professional musicians give the whole sound the soul through which this music comes to life. The classical instruments are superbly performed and perfect the folk factor. But the violin is a dream come true and always gives the songs the right atmosphere. Madness! There are no weak songs! You can feel the heart and soul with which each song was composed and played. Each song is a stunner!

This is an album where the 10 points of our scale are actually not enough. And I am already totally overwhelmed by all the brilliant albums that have already been released this year. Especially the 3/24/2023 is a date where a lot of fantastic albums in many different categories will be released. It can go on like this for all I care, even if the choice for the Top List 2023 will be a damn difficult matter. I don’t even want to think about the election for the album of the year.

The metal scene is alive and we should keep it alive and support it. So please buy the albums and the merch! I can’t repeat often enough how important this is. This also applies to pre-orders of albums or tickets for concerts. If I were you, I would pre-order the album ASAP, because there is only one limited edition of the gold vinyl. Dino Jelusick

ist ein kroatischer Sänger, der sich Zeit seines Lebens der Musik verschrieben hat. Und das ist wörtlich zu nehmen, denn er ist bereits als kleines Kind muskalisch in Erscheinung getreten. Dino Jelusick (Facebook) kann man getrost als Ausnahmesänger bezeichnen. Nicht umsonst hat er auch schon beim Trans-Sibirian-Orchestra gesungen. Dann war er Mitglied bei der Band ANIMAL DRIVE. Die hat sich aber leider im Jahr 2020 aufgelöst (Da gab es einige Unstimmigkeiten mit dem Label.) Seit Juli 2021 ist er neuer Sänger von WHITESNAKE.

Nun will er es wirklich wissen und hat ein neues Bandprojekt gestartet und nennt diese Band schlicht JELUSICK (Facebook). Die Single „Reign Of Vultures“ jedenfalls ist ein echtes Biest. Der Song hat eine überaus progressive Erscheinung und fährt alles auf, was man sich so vorstellen kann. Über sechs Minuten wird ein wahres Rockfest gefeiert. Der Härtegrad ist dabei angenehm hoch. Dino zeigt sehr eindrucksvoll, was er drauf hat. Aber nicht nur er! Auch die Instrumentalisten verstecken sich nicht und liefern eine Wahnsinnsshow. Es gibt nicht nur Flitzefinger an der Gitarre, sondern auch am Keybord mit famosen Hammond Orgel Sounds. Voll geil! Bin sehr gespannt, wann das neue Album dieses Jahr erscheinen wird.

LOCUS ANIMAE

kommen aus Italien und präsentieren ihre neue Single „Magia D’Inchiostro“ in ihrer Landessprache. Auch dieser Song ist progressive aufgebaut. Es beginnt ganz ruhig und höchst gefühlvoll mit einem Mixed-Duett und wechselt dann in einen massiveren melodischen Gothik angehauchten Part. Und dann…. ja dann geht es richtig zur Sache und lässt den Song eskalieren. Black Metal und Death Metal prügeln sich in den Song und verschaffen dem Song eine ganz andere Intensität. Der Song ist im Verlauf ein Wechselbad der Gefühle. Für mich ein Meisterwerk! Ich habe mich in den Song verliebt! Leider gibt es noch keine Infos über ein neues Album von Locus Animæ (Facebook).

CRUACHAN

sind eine irische Folkband aus Dublin und haben seit Gründung 1992 in 30 Jahren eine zahlreiche Fanschar um sich geschart. Das neue Album „The Living And The Dead“ ist ab dem 24.03.2023 (Label Despotz Records) zu haben und kann natürlich jetzt schon fleißig vorbestellt werden. Es erwartet Euch höchst atmosphärischer Folk Metal! Und der verdient seinen Namen zurecht. Die neue Single „The Reaper“ ist ein kämpferischer Song mit harschen Vocals, der aber auch mit einem schönen melodischen Chorus glänzt. The third month of the year has begun. The flowers are still holding back, but the releases are sprouting from the ground as numerous as they are colorful. This can also be seen in the variety of our playlist ‚ METALHEAD’s new stuff ‚. We also present a selection of the singles in a small extra report like this one. So have fun with HEAR & SEE March’23(1) with three very different ingenious songs.

Dino Jelusick

is a Croatian singer who has dedicated his life to music. And this is to be taken literally, because he has already appeared musically as a small child. Dino Jelusick (Facebook) can confidently be called an exceptional singer. Not for nothing he has sung with the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Then he was a member of the band ANIMAL DRIVE. Unfortunately, they broke up in 2020). Since July 2021 he is the new singer of WHITESNAKE.

Now he really wants to know it and has started a new band project and calls this band simply JELUSICK (Facebook) . The single „Reign Of Vultures“ is a real beast. The song has an extremely progressive appearance and drives everything you can imagine. Over six minutes a true rock festival is celebrated. The degree of hardness is pleasantly high. Dino shows very impressively what he can do. And also the other bandmates don’t hide and deliver a great show. There are not only tickling fingers on the guitar, but also on the keyboards with the hammond organ sound. Totally cool! I’m very curious when the new album will be released this year.

LOCUS ANIMAE

come from Italy and present their new single „Magia D’Inchiostro“ in their national language. This song also has a progressive structure. It starts very calm and highly soulful with a mixed duet and then changes into a more massive melodic gothic-inspired part. And then…. then the song really gets an escalation. Black metal and death metal thrash their way into the song and give the song a whole different intensity. The song is in the course of a roller coaster of emotions. For me a masterpiece! I fell in love with the song! Unfortunately there is no info about a new album from Locus Animæ (Facebook) yet.

CRUACHAN

are an Irish folk metal band from Dublin and have gathered a large fan base around them in 30 years since their founding in 1992. The new album „The Living And The Dead“ is available from 24.03.2023 (label Despotz Records) and can of course be pre-ordered now. You can expect atmospheric folk metal! And it deserves its name rightly. The new single „The Reaper“ is a fighting song with harsh vocals, but also shines with a beautiful melodic chorus. In addition, of course, you can enjoy traditional instruments, which sound wonderfully epic here. The elaborate and great staged video captures the atmosphere worthy. I am very much looking forward to the new album! That will certainly be blast!

CRUACHAN stehen seit einem Vierteljahrhundert für den Celtic Folk Black Metal. Man darf also Geigen und Flöten erwarten. Ebenso aber auch Blastbeats und wilde Schreie.

Neun Jahre Krieg

Nine Years Of Blood ist ein Konzeptalbum, das sich mit dem Krieg zwischen Irland und England in den Jahren 1593 bis 1603 beschäftigt. Es geht um Helden und Triumphe aber auch um Schurken und Niederlagen.

Der rein instrumentale Opener  I Am Tuan ist eine remasterte Version des Songs vom Album Tuatha na Gael (1995). In der neuen Version stehen allerdings die energischen Gitarrenriffs mehr im Vordergrund als beim Original. Die Folkelemente wurden zugunsten des Black Metal zurück gestellt, was den Song kraftvoll und massiv macht. Man bekommt hier schon einen Eindruck davon, worauf CRUACHAN mit den elf folgenden Songs hinaus wollen: dem Kriegergeist Hymnen singen.

Der nächste Song Hugh O’Neill – Earl of Tyrone ist dem Clanführer gewidmet, der in dem besungenen Krieg eine führende Rolle im Widerstand gegen die englischen Truppen einnahmen. Entsprechend martialisch kommt der Song daher. Mit metallischem Gerassel und schnellen Schlagzeugparts, die die Grundlage für einen bösartigen Gesang bieten, der sich mit Gitarrenriffs abwechselt, die dann von Flöten zu einer schönen Melodie entwickelt werden. Um kurz darauf wieder vom Gesang zerstört zu werden.

Blood and Victory startet mit schwerem Riffing und einem richtig dunklen Sound. Das Tempo zieht an und man sieht regelrecht, wie die Horden aufeinander zustürmen. Und dann auf einmal: ruhige Geigenmomente und ein fast tanzbarer Rhythmus. Aber auch hier wird die aufziehende Idylle durch den rauen Gesang wieder zerstört.

Balladen und Mythen

Queen of War ist eine wunderschöne Ballade. Hier wird in Folk-Manier eine Geschichte erzählt. Der Gesang wird von der Geige begleitet. Nach und nach finden sich die anderen Instrumente ein und greifen die Melodie auf, bis sie vielstimmig und eindrucksvoll klingt.  Der Song handelt von Morrígan, einer mythischen Frauengestalt, die in den keltischen Sagen eng mit Kampf und Krieg verbunden ist.

Schlachtengetümmel leitet The Battle of the Yellow Ford  ein. Die Vocals bilden einen mehrstimmigen Gesang, der an mittelalterliche Gesänge erinnert. Die Gitarren greifen den traditionellen Rhythmus in ihren Riffs auf. Wenn die Geigen hinzu kommen, nimmt auch das Pathetische zu.

Cath na Brioscai setzt dies fort. Nur dass hier die Black Metal Elemente kräftiger genutzt werden. Bis zum Ende hin dann doch wieder das folkloristische Lied gewinnt.

The Harp, the Lion, the Dragon and the Sword hat alles, was einen Pagan Folklore Metal Song ausmacht: sich aufbauenden mehrstimmigen Gesang, Geigen, die ein Tanzlied spielen. Und da hinein brechen schwere Riffs und hämmerndes Schlagzeug. Es klingt wie ein mittelalterlicher Markt, mit Musikern auf einer Bühne, vor der betrunkene Krieger tanzen.

An Ale Before Battle entführt den Hörer in ein Gasthaus: noch wird gelacht und getrunken. Ein letztes Bier, bevor die Schlacht weitergeht.

Niederlage, Stolz und Rebellion

Der wieder instrumentale Titelsong Nine Years Of Blood begleitet die Krieger immer noch leichtfüßig auf ihrem Weg.

Da The Siege Of Kinsale von der Niederlage der irischen Truppe gegen die Engländer handelt. Ich hatte einen grimmigen und kriegerischen Song erwartet. Über die Hälfte des Stückes ist instrumental gehalten, bis dann ein wütender Gesang einsetzt, der in einem Schrei endet.

Eigentlich hätte das Album hier zuende sein können: die Schlacht ist verloren, die Niederlage verheerend. Aber es folgen noch zwei weitere Lieder.

In  Flight Of The Earls wird davon erzählt, dass der eingangs besungene Hugh O’Neill ins Exil gehen muss. Dazu wird die traditionelle Form des irischen Liedes verwendet. Dann brechen wieder die knüppelnden Drums ein und machen mit den Geigen trotzig deutlich, dass zwar die Schlacht verloren, aber der Sieg der anderen nur vorübergehend ist.

Auch der letzte Track Back Home In Derry ist traditionell gehalten. Zum Abschluss noch einmal ein entschlossener und eindringlicher Song, der nach Rebellion klingt.

Ausgereifter Folk Metal

Fazit: Nine Years Of Blood ist ein packendes Album, mit dem CRUACHAN selbstbewusst und technisch überzeugend metallisch angehauchten Celtic Folk darbieten. Geigen und Flöten fügen sich mit hämmernden Rhythmen, harten Riffs und dunklem Gesang zu einem ausgereiften Folk Metal zusammen. Wer Melodien, die sonst eher in Pubs gesungen werden, auf Black Metal Basis mag, ist mit dem Album gut bedient. Wer meint, dass Flöten im Metal nichts zu suchen haben, sollte trotzdem reinhören und sich von der Wirkung traditioneller Weisen beeindrucken lassen – am besten mit einem Glas Ale.
