Jetzt geht es härtetechnisch langsam in Richtung Extreme Metal. Der Metalcore wird es uns heute hart besorgen. Und da gab es dieses Jahr ebenfalls verdammt starke Alben, die teilweise nicht unterschiedlicher sein könnten. Demzufolge war es verdammt schwer eine Entscheidung treffen. Viele Stunden mit heiserer Kehle und Nackenschmerzen später habe ich eine Entscheidung getroffen. Also Nacken geschmeidig machen und los geht’s:

INFECTED RAIN

Infected Rain (Facebook) haben mit viel Ehrgeiz eine steile Erfolgskurve zu verzeichnen. Die Band besticht durch eine ungeheure Energie, allen voran Lena Scissorhands als Sängerin. Sie ist mittlerweile eine bekannte Persönlichkeit in der Szene und sehr gefragt. Und am Anfang des Jahres kam das Album „Ecdysis“ auf den Markt.

„Postmortem Pt. 1“ war die erste Single und für mich nach wie vor der absolute Lieblingstrack auf der Scheibe. Ein unfassbar starker Song mit einer unglaublichen intensiven Ausstrahlung!

Der Sound von INFECTED RAIN infiziert! Wenn ich mir so einen Song wie „These Walls“ reinziehe, dann bekomme ich Gänsehaut. Diese explosive Mischung, welche teilweise in epische Gefilde abdriftet, hat einfach das gewisse Etwas. Zurückhaltung war noch nie so das große Ding von INFECTED RAIN. Da geht es meistens mit Vollgas durch die Wand. Der Sound spielt mit elektronischen Elementen ohne diesen Sound damit zu überladen. Er wird eher nur zur atmosphärischen Gestaltung der kosmischen Soundwelten eingesetzt. Im Vordergrund steht zumeist die wilde Entladung der Protagonisten an den Instrumenten und am Mikro. Alles in allem bin ich sehr begeistert von dem Album. „Ecdysis“ war das erste fette Highlight des Jahres und nach wie vor eines der besten Alben in diesem Jahr. (Review)

GWENDYDD

GWENDYDD (Facebook) sind eine Band, die sogar fast kompleet aus toughen Mädels besteht. Und wer sich jetzt wegen mangelnder Härte Sorgen macht, der sollte langsam gemerkt haben, dass nicht nur die Männer im Metal gehörig auf den Putz hauen können. „Censored“ heißt das aktuelle Album und ist eine super Steigerung zum Vorgänger.

Victoria Stoichkova als Frontfrau ist eine sehr wandelbare Kraft. Sie verbreitet Angst und Schrecken, kann aber auch mit zuckersüßen Einlagen verblüffen, wovon man jedoch nicht so häufig Gebrauch macht. Der Beginn des Albums ist sehr weit weg vom Zuckerschlecken, denn hier steigt man direkt steinhart ohne Rücksicht auf Verluste in die Geschichte ein.

GWENDYDD entfesseln mit ihrem Album „Censored“ einen zerstörischen dunklen Wahnsinn. Es ist ein irres Album, dass die Band mit einem Mal auf ein ganz anderes Level katapultiert. Die Kunst des Albums liegt darin, sich nicht in purer eintöniger Wildheit zu verlieren, sondern dem Sound immer wieder eigenwillige Facetten zu verpassen. Die Scheibe hämmert von vorne bis hinten! Dabei überzeugt das ungewöhnliche und abwechslungreiche Songwriting mit abstrusen und aberwitzigen Ideen, die zu einem funktionierenden Ganzen vereint wurden. So ist ein Album mit eigener Note entstanden, was verdammt noch mal Spaß macht. (Review)

Als Beispiel für die eigene Note sie hier der verrückteste Song „We Are The New Order“ genannt. Warum? „We Are The New Order“ ist ein Brecher, der mit elektronischen Samples spielt und somit dem Song ne besonders irre Not verpasst. Diese eingespielte orientalische Folklore ist einfach geil und mal was anderes. Da kann man mal im Moshpit kurz nen Bauchtanz einschieben.

MALEVOLENCE

Zugegeben…. Es fiel mir sehr schwer eine Entscheidung für den Spitzenplatz zu treffen. Zumal die musikalische Interpretation der letzten beiden Topplatzierungen unterschiedlicher nicht sein könnten. Das Album „Malicious Intent“ von MALEVOLENCE waren für mich lange Zeit der Anwärter auf den Spitzenplatz im Metalcore. Und es sei gesagt, dass diejenigen, welche es nicht ganz so abgefahren mögen, mehr mit diesem Album anfangen können. Soll aber nicht heißen, dass MALEVOLENCE Standard servieren würden. Dies ist ganz und gar nicht der Fall!

Das Intro „Malicious Intent“ fackelt natürlich nicht lange und die ruppige Stimme von Alex Taylor bricht hervor. Das massive Instrumentalgewitter lässt nicht lange auf sich warten und zeigt bereits eindrucksvoll, was man unter brachialen Breakdowns versteht, die wie heftige Schläge in die Magengrube reinhauen.

„Life Sentence“ geht den Weg weiter und entfesselt das nächste Core-Monster. Dabei prügelt das Monster nicht nur einfach stumpf drauflos. Es lässt eine ganze Armada verschiedenster Schlagkombination auf Euch niederprasseln. Krass fette Riffs, die von einer geilen spielfreudigen Leadgitarre beschossen werden. Für den Moshpit gibt es noch eine Speed-Einlage und das Ende ist ein durchschlagendes Breakdown-Erdbeben.

Wenn der grüne Hulk auf ein Konzert gehen würde, um mal richtig die Sau rauszulassen, dann wäre das wohl bei MALEVOLENCE. Es der schiere Wahnsinn, was die Band auf ihrem Album „Malicious Intent“ für eine Power entfesseln. Das ist unterhaltsamer Metal, der mit purer emotionaler Kraft dermaßen ballert, dass die Fetzen fliegen und ein Erdbeben die Erde erschüttert. Und das die Band dazu noch ne verdammt geile Ballade schmettern, zeigt nur umsomehr die Vielseitigkeit dieser Männer, die wunderbar zusammen harmonieren. Endgeiles Album und absolute Premier League! THE GLOOM IN THE CORNER

aus Australien sind eine ganz besondere Band, denn sie spielen Progressive Metalcore. Ich wusste gar nicht, dass es so was gibt, aber dann kam das Album „Trinity“ und ich wurde eines besseren belehrt. Die Band bewegt sich bei ihrer Interpretation des Metalcore in einem eigenen konzeptionellen Rahmen, indem sie Geschichten aus ihrem eigenen Universum musikalisch umsetzen. Es ist quasi ein vertonter Roman. Es geht dabei um Dämonen und Menschen in einer fiktiven Welt, ein ewiger erbitteter Kampf. Also nix für schwache Nerven…eine sehr intensive Erfahrung in jeder Hinsicht. Es ist ein durch und durch ausgeklügeltes Konzept aus Musik und künstlerischer Darstellung, wie man es selten findet.

Die Schönheit in der Zerstörung findet man hier. „Klotzen! Nicht kleckern!“ THE GLOOM IN THE CORNER hauen mächtig auf die Kacke. Der Hörer muss sich auf „viel“ Sound gefasst machen. Die Strukturen sind vollgestopft mit verschiedenen Eindrücken. Sehr intensiv! Man könnte es sogar schon als progressiv bezeichnen. Denn es ist bewundernswert, wie die Band inmitten der ganzen brachialen Songs ihre Melodien einbaut und mit fantastischen cleanen Gesangslinien verzaubert. Hierbei sei als Ausnahmesong „Red Clouds“ als erholsame musikalische Oase genannt, der als einziger allein mit cleanen Vocals auskommt.

Was für ein Trip!!! THE GLOOM IN THE CORNER dürften sich mit dem Album „Trinity“ aus dem Underground schießen, und zwar mit aller Wucht in die Topliga des Metalcore. Ein sehr intensives und überwältigendes Erlebnis, dass zwischen mitreißender Dynamik und dämonischem Chaos wandelt. (Review)

Und da dieses Album anders ist als andere und überwätigend in Szene gesetzt wurde, ist „Trinity“ mein Album des Jahres in der Kategorie Metalcore. Der absolute vertonte Wahnsinn!

Now it’s time for the harder stuff and we get more and more into the direction of extreme metal. Metalcore will give us the hard way today. And there were also damn strong albums this year, which could not be more different. Therefore it was damn hard to make a decision. Many hours with hoarse throat and neck pain later I made a decision. So get your neck supple and let’s go:

INFECTED RAIN

INFECTED RAIN (Facebook) have a lot success with a lot of ambition. But you have to remember that they have already been around for 13 years. The band captivates with a tremendous energy, especially Lena Scissorhands (Facebook) as the singer. She is now a well-known personality in the scene and very much in demand. And at the beginning of the year the album „Ecdysis“ was released.

„Postmortem Pt. 1“ was the first single and for me still the absolute favorite track on the album. An incredibly strong song with an unbelievable intense charisma!

The sound of INFECTED RAIN infects! When I listen to a song like „These Walls“, I get goosebumps. This explosive mixture, which sometimes drifts into epic realms, just has that certain something. Restraint has never been the big thing of INFECTED RAIN. There it goes mostly with full throttle. The sound plays with electronic elements without overloading this sound with it. It is rather used only for the atmospheric design of the cosmic sound worlds. In the foreground is mostly the wild discharge of the protagonists on the instruments and on the vocals. All in all, I am very enthusiastic about the album. „Ecdysis“ was the first fat highlight of the year and still one of the best albums this year.

GWENDYDD

WENDYDD (Facebook) are a band that consists almost entirely of tough girls. And who is now worried about the lack of toughness, should have slowly noticed that not only the men in Metal can do it in a brutal way. „Censored“ is the name of the current album and is a super increase to the predecessor.

Victoria Stoichkova as the front woman is a very changeable force. She spreads fear and terror, but can also amaze with sugar-sweet interludes, but which is not used so often. The beginning of the album is very far from sugarcoating, because here you get right away the hard attack.

GWENDYDD unleash a destructive dark madness with their album „Censored“. It is an insane album that catapults the band to a whole other level all at once. Musically it’s not getting lost in pure monotonous savagery, but always adding idiosyncratic facets to the sound. The album hits from front to back! The unusual and varied songwriting convinces with abstruse and crazy ideas, which were united to a functioning whole. Thus, an album with its own note has been created, which is damn fun. (Review)

As an example for this own note is the craziest song „We Are The New Order“. This track is a breaker, which plays with electronic samples and thus gives the song ne particularly crazy need. This recorded oriental folklore is just cool and something different. There you can briefly insert a belly dance in the mosh pit.

MALEVOLENCE

Admitted…. It was very difficult for me to make a decision for the top spot. Especially since the musical interpretation of the last two top rankings could not be more different. The album „Malicious Intent“ by MALEVOLENCE (Facebook) were for me for a long time the contender for the top place in Metalcore. And it should be said that those who don’t like it so unusual would prefer this album. But this is not to say that MALEVOLENCE would serve standard. Not at all!

The intro „Malicious Intent“ of course doesn’t take long and the gruff voice of Alex Taylor breaks out. The massive instrumental storm is not long in coming and already shows impressively what is meant by brute breakdowns that punch like heavy blows in your stomach.

„Life Sentence“ continues the way and unleashes the next core monster. The monster doesn’t just bluntly beat the hell out of you. It lets a whole armada of different punch combinations rain down on you. Crass fat riffs, which are bombarded by a horny playful lead guitar. For the mosh pit there is still a speed interlude and the end is a resounding breakdown earthquake.

If the green Hulk would go to a concert, then it would probably be at MALEVOLENCE. It’s sheer madness what power the band unleash on their album „Malicious Intent“. This is entertaining metal, which is so powerful with pure emotional force that the shreds fly and an earthquakes shake the earth. And that the band also belt out a damn cool ballad, shows only the versatility of these men, who harmonize wonderfully together. Stunning album and absolute Premier League! (Review)

THE GLOOM IN THE CORNER

from Australia are a very special band, because they play progressive Metalcore. I didn’t even know that there was such a thing, but then came the album „Trinity“ and I was taught better. The band’s interpretation of metalcore moves within its own conceptual framework, musically translating stories from its own universe. It’s a novel set to music, so to speak. It is about demons and humans in a fictional world, an eternal requested fight. So not for the faint of heart…a very intense experience in every way. It is a thoroughly ingenious concept of music and artistic performance, as you rarely find.

Beauty in destruction can be found here. THE GLOOM IN THE CORNER hit the shit hard. The listener must be prepared for „a lot“ of sound. These structures are crammed with different impressions. Very intense! Because it is admirable how the band incorporates its melodies in the midst of all the brute songs and enchants with fantastic clean vocal lines. Here, the exceptional song „Red Clouds“ should be mentioned as a restful musical oasis, which is the only one with clean vocals alone.t

What a trip!!! THE GLOOM IN THE CORNER should shoot themselves out of the underground with the album „Trinity“, and with all the force into the top league of Metalcore. A very intense and overwhelming experience that walks between rousing dynamics and demonic chaos.(Review)

And because this album is different from others and is overwhelmingly staged, „Trinity“ is my album of the year in the category Metalcore. The absolute music madness!

Die Entstehungsgeschichte von GWENDYDD

war relativ ungewöhnlich. Vor einigen Jahren war es noch ein Schock, wenn in der Casting-Show „The Voice“ Menschen zu sehen und zu hören waren, die nicht aus dem „normalen“ Pop-Musik-Business kamen. Im Jahr 2018 hatte Vicky Stoichkova ihren Moment in dieser Show und performte den Song „Look what you made me do“ von Taylor Swift in ihrer ganz eigenen Version. Nach einem melodischen Start gab es schockierte Gesichter, als Vicky den Refrain mit fiesen Growls vortrug. Vicky gewann den Wettbewerb zwar nicht, aber sie erregte die Aufmerksamkeit des Musikers Bambi Nikiforov und so wurde die Band GWENDYDD geboren. Übrigens stammt der Name von einer starken Frau aus der keltischen Mythologie. Sie soll die Schwester von Merlin gewesen sein.

Schockmomente

MH: Hallo Vicky! Vielen Dank, dass du dir die Zeit für dieses Interview genommen hast. Das ist umso mehr von Bedeutung, da Ihr zur Zeit eine große Tour absolviert. Zunächst einmal möchte ich dir zu deinem zweiten Album „Censored“ gratulieren, das mich buchstäblich umgehauen hat. Mittlerweile weiß fast jeder, dass du bei „The Voice“ in Bulgarien aufgetreten bist und die Leute dort geschockt hast. Die Leute dort haben dich anfangs wahrscheinlich falsch eingeschätzt. Passiert es Dir oft, dass man Dich falsch einschätzt? Magst Du die Momente, in denen Du Menschen überraschen oder sogar schockieren kannst?

Vicky: Hallo! Danke, dass ich dabei sein darf Um ehrlich zu sein, passiert das wohl ziemlich oft, denn nach fast jeder Show bekomme ich Kommentare wie „Oh mein Gott! Du siehst so klein und zart aus und growlst wie ein Monster! Wie machst du das nur?!“. Ich liebe es, solche Kommentare zu hören. Es bringt mich zum Lachen und ich merke, wie sehr mein Aussehen im Gegensatz zu der Musik steht, die ich mache.

Früh übt sich

MH: Du bist schon sehr früh mit harter Metal-Musik in Berührung gekommen. Im Alter von sechs Jahren konntest Du bereits den Song „People=Shit“ von SLIPKNOT auswendig. Das ist sehr ungewöhnlich. Was hat dich in diesem jungen Alter am extremen Metal fasziniert? Normalerweise ist das ja nicht die Art von Musik, mit der man als Kind anfängt. Wie hat sich das entwickelt? Hast du wirklich nur Metal gehört oder hattest du auch Spaß an anderer Musik?

Vicky: Ich glaube, ich mochte einfach den Klang und die Dynamik der Musik. Mein großer Bruder war derjenige, der mich mit dieser Musik bekannt gemacht hat, und er spielt Gitarre, also nehme ich an, dass es eine Kombination aus der Tatsache, dass ich zu meinem großen Bruder aufgeschaut habe (und es immer noch tue) und dem Klang der Metal-Musik. Sie klang für mich echt und ehrlich. Ich habe mich einfach auf einer bestimmten Ebene damit verbunden.

MH: Wie hat Dein persönliches Umfeld wie Familie und Freunde auf Ihre Vorliebe für Metal reagiert? Teilen außer Deinem Bruder noch andere Deinen Geschmack?

Vicky: Meine Familie hört eigentlich auch Metal-Musik. Vielleicht nicht so viel und nicht alle meine Familienmitglieder, aber sie mögen bestimmte Songs und Bands aus diesem Genre. Meine Freunde tun dies auch. Und um ehrlich zu sein, höre ich nicht nur Metal. Ich höre mir alle Arten von Musikgenres an. Ich denke, dass man in jedem Musikgenre etwas finden kann, das einem gefällt. Und mein Umfeld teilt meine Ansichten darüber

Entscheidungen aus dem Bauch heraus

MH: Wann hast Du dich entschieden es im extremen Metal als Sängerin zu versuchen? Hast du vorher nicht Gitarre gespielt?

Vicky: Das ist wahr. Ich habe mit Gitarre angefangen und eine ganze Zeit lang gespielt. Ich weiß es nicht genau. Es war einer dieser Momente, in denen du nicht weißt, woher die Idee in deinem Kopf kam, aber du musst es einfach ausprobieren und tun. Als ob man es mit dem Körper spürt. Nicht so sehr als Gedankenprozess. Ich habe angefangen, Gesang zu lernen, als ich ungefähr 12 war, glaube ich. Gott segne YouTube-Tutorials! Damals hörte ich Bands wie Asking Alexandria, Bring Me The Horizon und Motionless In White und ich wollte lernen, wie diese Jungs zu schreien. Also fing ich an, meine Eltern mit meinen Versuchen zu nerven, haha.

Rolle der Frauen im Metal

MH: Frauen sind mittlerweile keine Seltenheit mehr in der Rock- und Metalwelt. Aber im Bereich des extremen Metals sind sie immer noch eher die Ausnahme. Natürlich gibt es Bands wie z.B. ARCH ENEMY, JINJER oder INFECTED RAIN, die zeigen, dass es auch dort hervorragend funktioniert. Haben Frauen im extremen Metal immer noch ein Akzeptanzproblem oder ist das vorbei? Wie sind eure bisherigen Erfahrungen in dieser Hinsicht?

Vicky: Ich kann natürlich nicht für alle sprechen, aber aus meiner Sicht scheint es zwei Lager zu geben. Ein Teil der Leute liebt und verehrt Frauen im extremen Metal und der andere Teil hasst das einfach und akzeptiert eine Band nicht, bis sie sich bewährt hat. Jeder hat ein Recht auf seine eigene Meinung und es ist natürlich völlig normal, dass Menschen unterschiedliche Dinge mögen. Meine persönliche Erfahrung in dieser Hinsicht ist, dass die meisten Leute Frauen im Metal als gleichberechtigt akzeptieren (in Bezug auf das Mitwirken in Bands), aber es gibt immer noch einige Leute, die aufgrund dieser Tatsache etwas kritischer sind.

Fremde werden zur Freunden

MH: Ihr als Band kanntet euch anfangs nicht. War das nicht anfangs eine seltsame Situation? Wie schnell habt ihr euch kennengelernt? Denn die Pandemie hat die Sache ja auch erschwert. Das war sicher keine einfache Zeit, oder?

Vicky: Ja, wir waren fünf völlig Fremde. Am Anfang war es in der Tat ein bisschen unangenehm. Wir hatten von Anfang an alle das gleiche Ziel und auch den gleichen Ehrgeiz, aber anfangs war es hauptsächlich Arbeit. Dann lernten wir uns langsam kennen, und wir wurden sehr enge Freunde. Ich vergleiche GWENDYDD gerne mit einer großen Familie. Wir haben viel zusammen durchgemacht, besonders als die Pandemie ausbrach. Aber ich habe das Gefühl, dass uns diese Zeit noch enger zusammengeschweißt hat und uns die Zeit gab, uns besser kennenzulernen und unseren Zusammenhalt als Band und als Team zu stärken.

Ein überraschender Anruf

MH: Wann ist das deutsche Label DRAKKAR ENTERTAINMENT auf dich aufmerksam geworden? Dieser Deal kam sicherlich überraschend, nicht wahr?

Vicky: Das kam eigentlich zu einem sehr interessanten Zeitpunkt. Es war eine wunderbare, verschneite Dezembernacht. Kurz vor Silvester bekamen wir einen Anruf von unserem Management, das uns mitteilte, dass es jemanden gibt, der bereit ist, mit uns zu sprechen. Wenig später fanden wir uns in einem Meeting mit diesen wunderbaren Leuten von Drakkar wieder. Und vom ersten Moment an fühlte es sich richtig an.

In meinem Kopf klingt es immer noch wie eine Geschichte, die sich jemand ausgedacht hat, auch wenn sie real ist.

Kaputte Welt

MH: Euer zweites Album „Censored“ ist für mich ein großer Sprung. Der Sound hat sich in allen Bereichen immens gesteigert. Das Album ist deutlich wütender und aggressiver geworden. War das ein natürlicher Prozess oder wurde dieser Weg bewusst gewählt? Ist es das Ergebnis einer weltlichen Entwicklung, die nun wirklich nicht viel Gutes hervorbringt? Welche Themen habt ihr auf dem neuen Album aufgegriffen?

Vicky: Zunächst einmal vielen Dank! Dass das Album aggressiver geworden ist, war meiner Meinung nach ein natürlicher Prozess. Wir haben es während der Pandemie geschrieben und zu dieser Zeit war die Welt… nun, es fühlte sich an, als wäre sie kaputt und nichts war in Ordnung und das Gefühl der Unsicherheit und die Angst vor dem Unbekannten war vielleicht zu viel. Das alles war ein Schock für uns und auch für alle anderen. Es war eine dunkle Zeit, und ich denke, dass unser Album ‚Censored‘ uns, unsere Gedanken und Gefühle während dieser Zeit widerspiegelt.

Hoffnungen

MH: Nachdem das Album „Censored“ fertiggestellt und nun veröffentlicht wurde, ist die Pandemiekrise fast vorbei. Jetzt gibt es Krieg in der Ukraine. Ihr seid eine Band von jungen Leuten. Was denkt Ihr über diese ganze weltliche Situation? Wie groß sind Eure Ängste vor der Zukunft?

Vicky: Ja… Es scheint nie zu enden. Die Welt hat wohl eine lange Serie von schlechten Zeiten. Es ist erschütternd zu sehen, wie sehr die Menschen in der Ukraine leiden. Egal, wie groß die Unterschiede und konkurrierenden Interessen zwischen den Nationen auch sein mögen, Krieg und Gewalt dürfen keine Lösung sein.

Du hast mich nach meinen Ängsten gefragt, aber ich ziehe es vor, stattdessen über Hoffnungen zu sprechen.

Es mag naiv klingen, aber ich hoffe immer noch, dass es Tage geben wird, an denen wir als Menschen gelernt haben, in Frieden und Freiheit zu leben. Ohne jegliche Ausnahmen!

Wir können so viel erreichen, wenn wir nur zusammen statt gegeneinander arbeiten würden. Und das fängt schon bei jedem einzelnen von uns an. Aber es liegt noch ein langer Weg vor uns, aber wir müssen weitermachen.

Ein Sprung ins Ungewisse

MH: Wenn Du die Möglichkeit hättest, auf der Zeitachse der Menschheit zu einem beliebigen Zeitpunkt zu leben, sei es in der Vergangenheit, in der Gegenwart oder in einer ungewissen Zukunft? Welche würdest DU wählen?

Vicky: Wow! Ich muss sagen, ich liebe Deine Fragen! Hmm… Ich bin extrem neugierig, was die Zukunft bringt, um ehrlich zu sein. Vielleicht auf einem anderen Planeten zu leben… oder eine Art ultimative Verbindung mit der Natur zu erreichen wie im Film Avatar… das Problem ist, dass ich das Gefühl habe enttäuscht zu werden, haha. Trotzdem würde ich sagen, dass ich gerne sehen würde, was die Zukunft bringt.

Von einem Witz zu einem Song

MH: Die neuen Songs verwendet Ihr auch mehr elektronische Effekte und überrascht mit verrückten Ideen. Der verrückteste Song in dieser Hinsicht ist für mich „We Are The New Order“. Ein harter, verspielter Brecher, der plötzlich mit orientalischen Zwischenspielen überrascht. Woher kommen solche Ideen?

Vicky: Das hat eigentlich mit einem Witz angefangen… Bambi hat mit ein paar Samples herumgespielt und sie über den Song gelegt und wir haben zunächst beschlossen, es so zu lassen, weil es einfach nur lustig war. Aber dann gefiel uns tatsächlich immer besser, wie es über den brutalen Gitarrenriffs klang. Dann beschloss unser Tontechniker, die Melodie auf der Sitar zu spielen, und wir liebten es. Lange Rede, kurzer Sinn – diese Version hat es auf das Album geschafft.

Ein natürlicher Prozess

MH: Der Song „One Step More“ hingegen ist zurückhaltender und klingt melodiöser. Mit welchem männlichen Duettpartner singen Sie diesen Song? (Ist es Bambi?) Warum habt Ihr den Song ruhiger gestaltet?

Vicky: „One Step More“ war für uns der schwierigste Song, weil er so anders ist als die anderen. Er ist in gewisser Weise leichter, aber auch sehr ehrlich, emotional und hoffnungsvoll. Das Schreiben dieses Songs war ein ziemlich langer Prozess, aber es hat sich gelohnt. Am Ende ist es einfach großartig geworden! Mein Duettpartner bei diesem Song ist Vasko Raykov von ODD CREW Wenn ihr die Band noch nicht kennt, solltet ihr sie unbedingt ausprobieren! Sie sind großartig und haben kürzlich ihr neues Album ‚Dark Matters Part 1‘ veröffentlicht!

Und um die Frage zu beantworten, warum wir den Song ruhiger gemacht haben – das war definitiv nicht beabsichtigt. Ich glaube nicht, dass wir beim Schreiben von Musik eine bestimmte Absicht verfolgen. Wir setzen uns einfach hin und lassen alles raus, was kommt, und überlegen uns dann den Rest.

Unglaubliche Gefühle

MH: Erzähl uns von Dingen, die dich im Moment zum Lachen bringen oder glücklich machen (abgesehen von der Veröffentlichung des neuen Albums).

Vicky: Unsere Tournee macht mich glücklich. Auf der Bühne zu stehen und nach der Show mit den Leuten zu reden ist ein Gefühl, das man gar nicht beschreiben kann! Eine andere Sache, die mich glücklich macht, ist das Musikhören im Van. Aus irgendeinem Grund liebe ich es, Musik zu hören, während ich mit einem Auto unterwegs bin. Ich verschwinde einfach in meiner eigenen Welt.

Eine wahnsinnige Tour

MH: Ihr habt eine gemeinsame Tour mit DARK TRANQUILITY und ENSIFERUM absolviert. Das sind wirklich starke und bekannte Bands. Wahrscheinlich waren das die größten Konzerte sein, die ihr bisher gespielt habt.

Seid ihr eher lässig gewesen und habt alles auf euch zukommen lassen? Wieviel Vorfreude Aufregung spielt im Vorfeld eine Rolle? Wie bereitet ihr euch als Band kurz vor dem Auftritt vor? Macht ihr lockere Witze oder konzentriert sich jeder auf sich selbst?

Vicky: Eigentlich waren das die größten Konzerte, die wir bisher gespielt haben. Der Grad der Aufregung kurz vor der Abfahrt zur Tour war eigentlich nicht so hoch, weil wir alle im „Arbeitsmodus“ waren, weil wir eine Menge Sachen zu erledigen hatten, bevor wir auf die Tour gingen. Aber sobald wir in den Van stiegen, wurde uns klar… Wir gehen auf Tour!!! Mit Dark Tranquility und Ensiferum!!! Da hat uns die Aufregung erst richtig erwischt. Kurz vor Auftritten machen wir das übliche Zeug. Aufwärmen, stressen, springen, wieder aufwärmen. Ich würde sagen, es ist 50/50. Wir brauchen alle etwas Zeit für uns selbst vor einer Show, aber wir sind auch gerne etwas geselliger und reden und scherzen miteinander. 

MH: Erzähle uns doch ein wenig über Eure Erfahrungen bei den Konzerten?

Vicky: Die ganze Tour mit Dark Tranquility und Ensiferum war unglaublich! Wir haben so viele neue Dinge gelernt, wir haben viele neue Freunde gefunden und wir hatten die Chance, unsere Musik mit so vielen Leuten zu teilen! Das ist etwas, das wir nie vergessen werden!

The genesis of GWENDYDD

was relatively unusual. A few years ago, it was a shocker to see and hear people appearing on a casting show called „The Voice“ who were not from the „normal“ pop-music-business. In 2018, Vicky Stoichkova had her moment in this show and performed the song „Look what you made me do“ by Taylor Swift in her very own version. After a melodic start, there were shocked faces when Vicky performed the chorus with nasty growls. Vicky didn’t win the contest, but she attracted the attention of musician Bambi Nikiforov and that’s how the band GWENDYDD was born. By the way, the name comes from a strong woman from Celtic mythology. It is said to have been the sister of Merlin.

Shock moments

MH: Hello Vicky! Thank you very much for taking the time for this interview. This is even more important since you are currently on a big tour. First of all, I would like to congratulate you on your second album „Censored“, which literally blew me away. By now, almost everyone knows that you performed on „The Voice“ in Bulgaria and shocked them there. People there probably misjudged you at the beginning.

Does it often happen to you that people misjudge you? Do you like those moments when you can surprise or even shock people?

Vicky: Hello! Thank you for having me! To be honest it does happen quite often I suppose, because after almost every show I get comments such as “Oh my god! You look so small and gentle and you growl like a monster! How do you do that?!”. I love hearing such comments. It makes me laugh and I realize how contrasting my appearance looks to the music I create.

Early beginning in Metal

MH: You had contact with hard metal music very early. At the age of six you already knew the song „People=Shit“ by SLIPKNOT by heart. That is very unusual. What fascinated you at that young age about extreme metal? It’s not usually the kind of music you start with as a child. How did that develop? Did you really only listen to metal or did you enjoy other music as well?

Vicky: I guess I just liked the way it sounded and the dynamic of the music. My big brother was the one who introduced me to this music and he plays guitar so I suppose it would be a combination of the fact that I looked up to my big brother (and still do) and the sound of the metal music and how genuine it was. I just connected to it on a certain level.

MH: How did your personal environment like family and friends react to your preference for metal? Do they all share your taste?

Vicky: My family listens to metal music as well actually. Maybe not that heavy and not all my family members but they still like certain songs and bands within the genre. My friends as well. And to be honest, I don’t listen only to metal. I listen to all kinds of music genres. I think that you can find something you like about every musical genre. Saying this – my environment shares my views on that.

From guitar to vocals

MH: When did you decide to try extreme metal as a vocalist? Didn’t you play guitar before?

Vicky: That is true. I did start with guitar and played for quite some time. I don’t know really. It was one of these moments where you don’t know where the idea in your head came from but you just really need to try/do the thing. As if you feel it with your body. Not so much as a thought process. I actually started learning to do vocals when I was about 12 I think. God bless YouTube tutorials! At that point I was listening to bands like Asking Alexandria, Bring Me The Horizon, Motionless In White and I wanted to learn how to scream like those guys. So I started annoying the heck out of my parents with my attempts to do so haha.

Women in the Metal-World

MH: Meanwhile, women are no longer a rarity in the rock and metal world. But in the field of extreme metal they are still rather the exception. Of course, there are bands like ARCH ENEMY, JINJER or INFECTED RAIN, for example, who show that it works excellently there, too. Do women still have an acceptance problem in extreme metal or is that over? What are your experiences in this regard so far?

Vicky: Of course, I can not speak for everybody, but from my perspective it seems to be on the two ends. One part of the people love and adore women in extreme metal and the other part just hates that and won’t accept a band until they prove themselves. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and it’s perfectly normal for people to like different things of course. My personal experience regarding this so far is that most people accept women in metal as equals (in terms of being in bands) but there are still some people who are a bit more critical due to this fact.

Foreigners became friends

MH: You as a band didn’t know each other at first. Wasn’t that a strange situation at first? How quickly did you get to know each other? Because the pandemic also made things more difficult. That was certainly not an easy time, was it?

Vicky: Yes, we were five complete strangers. It was a bit awkward at first indeed. We all had the same goal from the very beginning and the same drive level as well, but it was mostly work at first. Then slowly we started to get to know each other and we became very close friends. I like to compare Gwendydd to one big family. We went through a lot together, especially when the pandemic hit. But I feel that this period made us even closer and gave us the time to get to know each other better and strengthened our bond as a band and as a team.

Surprise calling

MH: When did the German label DRAKKAR ENTERTAINMENT become aware of you? This deal certainly came as a surprise, didn’t it?

Vicky: This came at a very interesting timing actually. It was a wonderful snowy December night. Right before New Year’s Eve when we got a call from our management saying that there is someone willing to talk to us. A bit later we found ourselves in a meeting with these wonderful people of Drakkar. And from the very first moment on it felt right.

In my head it still sits like a story someone has put together. No matter that it’s true.

Broken world

MH: Your second album „Censored“ is a big leap for me. The sound has increased immensely in all areas. The album has become considerably angrier and more aggressive. Was this a natural process or was this path deliberately chosen? Is it the result of worldly development, which really does not generate much good now?

Vicky: First of all, thank you! The album being more aggressive was a natural process in my opinion. We wrote it during the pandemic and at that period of time the world was… well it felt as if it was broken and nothing was okay and the feeling of insecurity and the fear of the unknown was maybe too much. It all came as a shock for us, as well as for everybody else. It was a dark period and I think that our album Censored is a reflection of us, our thoughts and feelings during that period of time.

Hopes

MH: After the album „Censored“ was finished and now released, the pandemic crisis is almost over. Now there is war in Ukraine. You are a band of young people.

How do you feel about this whole world situation? How big are your fears for the future?

Vicky: Yeah… It never seems to end. As if the world is on a streak of bad periods. It is devastating seeing how much the people in Ukraine suffer. No matter what the differences and competing interests between nations might be, there must not be war and violence as a solution.

You asked me about my fears, however I prefer talking about hopes instead.

It might sound naive but I still hope that there will be the days when we as human beings have learned to live in peace and freedom. Without any exceptions.

We can achieve so much if we’d only work together instead of against each other. And that starts already with every single one of us. However, there is still a long road ahead but we have to keep going.

Jump into the unknown

MH: If you had the opportunity to live on the timeline of humanity in any period of time, be it in the past, present or in an uncertain future that you don’t know what it holds. Which would you choose?

Vicky: Wow! I must say, I love your questions! Hmm.. I am extremely curious what the future holds to be honest. Maybe living on another planet… or reaching some sort of ultimate connection with nature as in the movie Avatar… the problem is that I feel I would be disappointed haha. Still, I would say I’d like to see what the future holds.

From a joke to a song

MH: The new songs also use more electronic effects and surprise with crazy ideas. The craziest song in this regard for me is „We Are The New Order“. A hard, playful breaker that suddenly surprises with oriental interludes. Where did ideas like this come from?

Vicky: This actually started with a joke… Bambi was playing around with some samples and put them over the song and we decided to leave it like this just because it was funny. But then we grew to like how it sounded over the brutal guitar riffs. Then our sound guy decided to play the melody on sitar and we loved it. So, long story short – this version made the album.

Natural process

MH: The song „One Step More“ on the other hand is more reserved and sounds more melodic. With which male duet partner do you sing this song? Why did you make the song more quiet?

Vicky: “One Step More” was the most difficult song for us to create, because it is so different from the rest. It’s way lighter in a way but also very honest, emotional and hopeful. Writing this song was quite a long process but it was worth it. In the end it all came out great! My duet partner on the song is Vasko Raykov from Odd Crew. If you don’t know the band, you should definitely check them out! They are amazing and  recently released their new album called ‚Dark Matters Part 1‘!

Also, to answer the question why we made the song more quiet – it was definitely not intentional. I don’t really think that when we write music it’s with a specific intention. We just sit and pour out whatever comes and then figure out the rest.

Unbelievable feelings

MH: Tell us about things that make you laugh or happy at the moment (apart from the release of the new album).

Vicky: As we are on tour now, the thing that makes me happy is being on stage and talking to the people after the show. This is a feeling that can’t even be described! Another thing that makes me happy is listening to music in the van. For some reason I love listening to music while I’m traveling with a car. I just disappear in my own world.

The insane tour

MH: You joint touring with DARK TRANQUILITY and ENSIFERUM. Those are really strong and well-known bands. Probably these were the biggest concerts you have played so far. Are you rather casual and let it all come to you with a lot of anticipation or how much excitement plays a role in advance? Do you make casual jokes or does everyone focus on themselves?

Vicky: Actually, those were the biggest concerts we had played so far. The level of excitement right before leaving for the tour wasn’t so high actually because we were all in “work mode” because we had a looot of stuff to get done before we left for the tour. But as soon as we got into the van we realized… We were going on tour!!! With Dark Tranquility and Ensiferum!!! Then the excitement really hit us. Right before gigs we do the usual stuff. Warming up, stressing, jumping, warming up again. I’d say it’s 50/50. We all need some time to ourselves before a show, but we also like to be a bit more social with each other and talk and joke around. 

MH: I would like to know something about your experiences at the tour. How did it go?

Vicky: The whole tour with Dark Tranquility and Ensiferum went amazing! We learned so many new things, we made many new friends and we got the chance to share our music with so many people! It is something we will never forget!

Extreme Metal

Und hier wieder ein Album aus der Kategorie: Unerwartet umgehauen! GWENDYDD (Facebook) war mir bisher kein Begriff. Das hat sich zum Glück definitiv geändert. Ich ging völlig unvorbereitet an die Sache heran und ich wurde förmlich vom Album „Censored“ (VÖ 06.05.2022) weggeblasen.

GWENDYDD ist eine schlagkräftige Gruppe aus Bulgarien. Doch besteht die Band nicht aus wilden Kerlen, sondern fast auschließlich aus hartgesottenen toughen Mädels. Und die legen eine Power an den Tag, dass einem Angst und Bange wird. Verrückt! Es gibt ja schon einige female fronted Bands, die es uns mit astreiner harter Mucke besorgen; siehe beispielsweise ARCH ENEMY, JINJER, SPIRITBOX oder INFECTED RAIN. Doch mit GWENDYDD wird ein weiteres Kapitel aufgeschlagen, dass den Begriff Härte und Wahnsinn ganz eigenständig für sich definiert. Inzwischen sind sie bei dem deutschen Label DRAKKAR unter Vertrag.

Kurz zur Entstehung der Band

Sängerin Victoria Stoichkova nahm 2018 an der Show „The Voice“ in Bulgarien teil und hinterließ mächtig Eindruck. Sie gewann die Show zwar nicht, aber der Musiker Bambi Nikiforov wurde so aufmerksam und wollte sie für sein Projekt gewinnen. Denn er wollte die erste All-Female-Metal-Band gründen und dabei als Songwriter und Produzent agieren. Schlussendlich hat man sich aber dann doch dafür entschieden, dass er selber als Drummer den Ton angibt. Und so fing man als Band zusammenzuwachsen. Man brachte 2020 das Album „Human Nature“ heraus.

Ich habe dort selbstverständlich auch mal ein Ohr riskiert. Ich würde mal sagen, dass sich die Band erst einmal ausprobiert hat. Es gibt richtig gute Songs auf dem Album, aber nicht alles klang für mich packend und ausgreift. Doch für ein Debüt ist das schon eine mehr als respektable Leistung. Allerdings hat man mit dem neuen Album „Censored“ einen Riesensprung gemacht. Die aktuellen Songs bewegen sich auf einem ganz anderen Level, auch was die Produktion angeht.

Ein Orkan

in Verbindung mit einem rumpelnden Erdbeben. So lässt sich das neue Album „Censored“ wohl am besten beschreiben. Aber das Ganze wird sogar mit einem Hauch süßem Wahnsinn versehen. Doch der Reihe nach. Victoria Stoichkova als Frontfrau ist eine sehr wandelbare Kraft. Sie verbreitet Angst und Schrecken, kann aber auch mit zuckersüßen Einlagen verblüffen, wovon man jedoch nicht so häufig Gebrauch macht. Der Beginn des Albums ist sehr weit weg vom Zuckerschlecken, denn hier steigt man direkt steinhart ohne Rücksicht auf Verluste in die Geschichte ein. Es ist eine Spieluhr, welche das Grauen mit „Martyrdom“ heraufbeschwört, das Euch im nächsten Moment wie ein unerwartet im Genick packt und mitreißt. Keine Hoffnung auf Gnade, wenn GWENDYDD ihren Angriff entfesseln. Wow! Das ist überwältigend!

Im folgenden wird es nicht harmloser. Hier wird die Bestie völlig ungebändigt losgelassen. „This Is The War“ ist ein gnadenloser Groove-Metal Angriff, der mit „Rape“ fortgeführt wird. Arschtritt-Drums, zerfetzende Riffs, ein zerstörerisch schwerer Bass und die vernichtenden Vocals von Victoria sorgen für ein furiosen Auftritt. Mir gefällt besonders, wenn dass der Bass von Sonya Radeva deutlich hörbar mitschwingt. Das sorgt für einen geilen Groove.

Eine wenig Süße gefällig?

Man kann es kaum glauben, aber tatsächlich kann die Band auch mal ruhigere Töne anschlagen und Sängerin Victoria ist durchaus in der Lage mit gefühlvollen Tönen zu glänzen. So kann man den Song „One Step More“ fast als Ballade durchgehen lassen. Im Duett mit männlichen Vocals offenbart Sängerin Victoria ihre zarten Seite, die sich in diesem Song mit ihrer diabolischen Seite abwechselt. Ein moderner gut gemachter Song, der den Hörer ein wenig runterholt und Erholung bietet ohne den Fluß des Albums zu unterbrechen oder als Fremdkörper zu wirken. Ich begrüße so etwas.

Bauchtanz im Moshpit

„We Are The New Order“ ist ein Brecher, der mit elektronischen Samples spielt und somit dem Song ne besonders irre Not verpasst. Der Song ist meiner Meinung nach ohnehin der verrückteste auf dem Album. Diese eingespielte orientalische Folklore ist einfach geil und mal was anderes. Da kann man mal im Moshpit kurz nen Bauchtanz einschieben. Gab es bestimmt noch nie!

Diese elektronischen Spielereien sind insgesamt wirklich cool und pfiffig eingesetzt und verpassen dem Sound von GWENDYDD eine besondere Eigenart. Mir gefällt dieser moderne Ansatz, mit dem man sich wohlwollend abhebt.

Der letzte Song „It’s All Up To You“ zeigt besonders deutlich den krassen Gegensatz zwischen der zarten cleanen Stimme und den brutalen Growls. Und wenn der Song dann später noch richtig aufdreht, dann ist einfach der Teufel los.

Fazit

GWENDYDD entfesseln mit ihrem Album „Censored“ einen zerstörischen dunklen Wahnsinn. Es ist ein irres Album, dass die Band mit einem Mal auf ein ganz anderes Level katapultiert. Die Kunst des Albums liegt darin, sich nicht in purer eintöniger Wildheit zu verlieren, sondern dem Sound immer wieder eigenwillige Facetten zu verpassen. Die Scheibe hämmert von vorne bis hinten! Dabei überzeugt das ungewöhnliche und abwechslungreiche Songwriting mit abstrusen und aberwitzigen Ideen, die zu einem funktionierenden Ganzen vereint wurden. So ist ein Album mit eigener Note entstanden, was verdammt noch mal Spaß macht. Ich wüsste daher nicht, wofür ich einen Punkt abziehen sollte. Es ist ein Volltreffer!

Extreme Metal

And here again an album from the category: Unexpectedly stunning! GWENDYDD (Facebook) was previously unknown to me. I went into it completely unprepared and I was literally blown away by the album „Censored“ (release date on May 06).

GWENDYDD is a powerful group from Bulgaria. But the band is not made up of wild guys, but almost exclusively of hard-boiled tough girls. And they unleash a power that makes you scared and anxious. Crazy! There are already some female fronted bands that give us a run with straight hard music; see for example ARCH ENEMY, JINJER, SPIRITBOX or INFECTED RAIN. But with GWENDYDD another chapter is opened that defines the term hardness and madness quite independently. In the meantime they are signed to the German label DRAKKAR.

Briefly about the origin of the band

Singer Victoria Stoichkova took part in the show „The Voice“ in Bulgaria in 2018 and made a powerful impression. She didn’t win the show, but musician Bambi Nikiforov took notice and wanted to recruit her for his project. Because he wanted to found the first all-female metal band and act as songwriter and producer. In the end, however, it was decided that he himself would beat the drums. And so they started to grow together as a band. In 2020 they released the album „Human Nature“.

Of course, I also listened to that. I would say that the band has first tried out. There are really good songs on the album, but not everything sounded gripping and mature to me. But for a debut this is already a more than respectable achievement. However, with the new album „Censored“ they have made a giant leap. The current songs are on a completely different level, also in terms of production.

A hurricane

in connection with a mighty earthquake! This is probably the best way to describe the new album „Censored“. But the whole thing is even provided with a touch of sweet madness. Victoria Stoichkova as a front woman is a very changeable force. She spreads fear and terror, but can also amaze with sugary sweet interludes. The beginning of the album is anything but saccharine, because here you are brutally thrown into the story of wild madness. It is a music box that conjures up the horror with „Martyrdom“. In the next moment this beast grabs you unexpected in the neck and carries you away. No hope for mercy as GWENDYDD unleash their assault. Wow! This is overwhelming!

In the following it does not get more harmless. Here the beast is let loose completely untamed. „This Is The War“ is a merciless groove metal assault that continues with „Rape“. Ass-kicking drums, shredding riffs, a destructively heavy bass and the devastating vocals of Victoria make for a furious performance. I especially like when the bass of Sonya Radeva clearly audible resonates and thus provides a great groove on the whole album.

Want a little sweetness?

It’s hard to believe, but the band can actually strike calmer notes and singer Victoria is definitely able to shine with soulful tones. So you can almost let the song „One Step More“ pass as a ballad. In the duet with male vocals singer Victoria reveals her tender side, which alternates with her diabolic side in this song. A modern well-made song that brings the listener down a bit and offers relaxation without interrupting the flow of the album or acting as a foreign body. I welcome something like this.

Oriental belly dance in the mosh pit

„We Are The New Order“ is a crusher that plays with electronic samples and thus gives the song a particularly crazy distress. The song is in my opinion anyway the craziest on the album. This included oriental folklore is just awesome and something different. You can insert a short belly dance in the mosh pit. Certainly never happened before!

These electronic gimmicks are really cool and cleverly used and give GWENDYDD’s sound a special character. I like this modern approach, with which one stands out benevolently.

The last song „It’s All Up To You“ shows especially clearly the stark contrast between the delicate clean voice and the brutal growls. And when the song really turns up, then the devil is simply loose.

Conclusion

GWENDYDD unleash a destructive dark madness with their album „Censored“. It’s a crazy album that catapults the band to a completely different level all at once. of the album lies in not getting lost in pure monotonous wildness, but to give the sound idiosyncratic facets again and again. GWENDYDD succeeds damn well in this.The album hammers from front to back! At the same time, the unusual and varied songwriting convinces with abstruse and crazy ideas, which were combined into a functioning whole. Thus, an album with its own note has been created, which is damn fun. I therefore don’t know what I should deduct a point for. It is a bull’s eye!
