In November, NEXION (Black Metal from Iceland) released the song „Gandr“, which immediately captivated me. It is incredibly intense and dynamic.
„Gandr“ refers, among other things, to a magical or fateful force, a spell used to bring about transformation. The narrative English parts of the song are interwoven with passages in Old Norse, which form an invocation. The words used there are inspired by an inscription from the late Viking Age. The original inscription, which seems to list various „spirits“, is believed to have been a protective spell against them. Howver, inscription only needed slight modifications to transform it from a protective spell into a different type of Old Norse magic, which turns spirits against one’s enemies– and that is what NEXION have done in „Gandr.“´.

I had the opportunity to ask Josh Rood, who is responsible for both the lyrics and vocals, some questions about the song and its background.

„The jaws of the wolf on humanity’s throat“

NEXION has previously been described as follows:

„Icelandic Black Metal outfit Nexion are the jaws of the wolf on humanity’s throat.“
Is this still the foundation of your music?
Josh: Yes.

That is a clear answer. You have had some changes in your line-up. How has this affected your music and themes?
The line-up changes have not influenced our theme. Certainly, our music has evolved since “Seven Oracles”. However, it is difficult to say which aspects of that evolution are due to the changes in the line-up.

Which changes have been most noticeable for you?
There is a greater sense of synchronicity in the band than there was previously. Our line-up is very in tune to each other, and the songwriting process for the new material has gone much smoother than anything we did prior. I think that will be abundantly clear in our upcoming music.

I get the impression that with “Gandr, you have steered your core concept in a new direction.
It revolves around magic, the summoning of spirits to destroy enemies, and the possibility of transforming grief and rage into powerful weapons. What role do spirits, magic, and invocations play in today’s world, which is often described as „enlightened“?
Today’s world is not so enlightened. That sentiment is a symptom of the sickness that is contemporary man´s hubris. Ironically, despite being a scientific age, the modern world’s way of thinking is very Christian. As a species we have generated more knowledge in certain things, like technology, but the so-called enlightenment period also shifted people’s ways of thinking from one that was holistic, into something highly segmented, and extremely dualist.

What are the consequences of this for how we perceive the world and our role within it?
We have advanced in understanding how to use the world, and how the world operates, but we have lost full knowledge systems on how we should be in the world, how we should treat it.

Spirit, Magic and Rituals

What does this mean for our perception of concepts like „spirits“ and „magic“? And how did you incorporate this into “Gandr”?
Regarding spirits, and magic, the song is based on traditional practices, so I refer to these in traditional ways. It’s pointless and very “enlightened” to try to define things like spirits or magic in objective, scientific terms.

Especially since their meaning is also dependent on cultural context.
Yes. In Old Norse, the word for spirit is önd, which means breath, intellect, creative life force, as well as an entity. The world is full of spirits, whether conceptually or literally.
Whether we want to believe it or not, the way we experience and understand the world is shaped by stories and rituals. Stories and rituals are also how we reaffirm or change our perception of the world. This directly effects how we treat the world. I can and do affect these things through our music.

And what about „magic“?
Magic is a tricky word and not one I particularly like, because of how it is perceived due to fantasy, but it would imply ritual behaviour that effects the world.

You mentioned that there has been a shift from holistic to dualistic thinking. This has resulted in categorisations like „good“ and „evil,“ „black“ and „white.“ How do you view the concept of „black magic“? Does it even make sense to speak of „black magic“?
Black magic is a concept used by Christianity, implying that the person practising it is evil because they are operating outside of or possibly against a Christian system. The world consists of competing forces and systems, and we still live in a Western world dominated by Christian – or, as you said, Enlightenment – thinking, which forces us into terms like „black magic”.

„Is Black Metal evil?“

This means that the term „black magic“ does not fit into an Old Norse context and thus does not align with what “Gandr” was or is, since Norse mythology is more about a balance of forces or energies than a moral dichotomy of good and evil.
Is black magic evil? Is Black Metal evil? I do not think so. Is Satan evil? Or is it evil to resist a tyrant or a tyrannical system?

That also depends on the perspective and background from which one evaluates things.
When we oppose an established system that considers itself „right and good,“ those who resist it are deemed „evil.“ I think it is better to speak of aggressive, destructive influences, healing, constructive influences, influences that uphold the status quo, and influences that subvert and possibly break them. Sometimes you need to destroy or act subversive in order to cause change.

And this can also mean looking at the past, embracing traditions, and using their constructive elements to drive change in the present. What role does this play for NEXION?
Humans are always creating connections to the past, even when we don’t realize it. Your view of and experience of the present is entirely shaped by whatever connection you have to the past, whether it is the type of knowledge you were taught, or the way you think the world operates.

If you become conscious of this fact, you start to be more deliberate in what aspects of the past you weave into your own present. We see this all the time with competing social or political or religious movements. They’re all pulling on different relationships with different parts of the past to inform their present.

From a developmental psychological perspective, everyone does this. Each of us is influenced by our relationship with the past in our current behaviour. How far we can use this awareness to shape the present in a way that benefits both ourselves and the community depends on our level of consciousness.
I study religion and culture.  Particularly, I study Old Norse Religion, modern indigenous and traditional cultures, and I also study the ways different beliefs and thinking effect our world. So how can I know these things and not let them have an essential role in my lyrics and ideas?

But you are not concerned with the past for its own sake.
I don’t sing about the past with NEXION. I am not trying to romanticise some fictitious pagan golden age, and I’m not retelling myths. I’m singing about the right now and about things that are deeply meaningful to me. But I am framing what I am singing about by pulling from knowledge systems inherent in the stories, teachings, and rituals that belong to, not only Old Norse Religion, but traditional systems around the world. These are the knowledge systems, or as you say, “traditions” that I want to shape my present. I have hoped that even though the songs are personal, that they say something important about the human experience and our place in the world today.

Inscriptions, Protective Spell and Incantiation

A part of the text is in Old Norse. I feel that this enhances the evocative, urgent character.
The words are inspired by an inscription listing various „spirits.“ Such a list was supposedly a protective charm against these spirits.
It’s a theory that the original inscription was a protective spell. There are other theories, including that the original inscription was a part of a funeral rite. For my purposes it doesn’t matter whether the original inscription was protective or not. The incantation in the song is very intentionally working with the spirits that I call.

Is it no longer enough to ward off spirits? Must they be summoned so that those who „revere“ them can see what it is truly like to deal with them?
I don’t think it’s a question of whether it is or isn’t enough to ward off spirits. That’s just not what this particular song is doing. The purpose isn’t to teach people what dealing with spirits is like. And in fact, calling on the spirits is only a final part of a larger ritual. I mention other aspects of it in the song. I howl over the dead. I carve a þurs with seven heads on something which never feels steel or will see the sun. The song commemorates those actions. The calling of the spirits to torment an enemy is one part of a full song and a full ritual. I know I´m being cryptic, but there is something to be said about not bringing every aspect of a text into public knowledge.

Regarding „Gandr,“ you wrote: „We can think of a few people who could use a visit from destroying spirits.“ Who or what situations did you have in mind—who would „benefit“ from a visit by the destroying spirits?
Well. Firstly, to say a thing about part of the history attached to Gandr, In Scandinavia, the concept of “Ganding” is associated with the Sámi people and seen as black magic. But that is because the Sámi have been subject to cultural genocide and land displacement, while being demonized through Christianity.
In traditional societies when you have nothing else you can do, in desperation, and because you see yourself as an extension of the land, you try to turn the land, the spirits of the land, and all the beings of the land against the ones who threaten you.

„Humanity has also failed at being a good member of this planet.„

The relationship between humans and the land, with nature, and their role within it, was profoundly altered by Christianity. And this is a theme you explored on your last album.
Our last album, „Seven Oracles“ ripped apart anthropocentrism, the idea that humans are this ultra important centre of the world. That we are above nature and have more intrinsic value than anything else. A lot of this bloated view of human worth, by the way, originates in a Western context in Christianity and has been encoded in the Enlightenment.
Christian thinkers who grew up with this grand sense that God made mankind in his image, to have dominion over the rest of the world, have gone on to shape the fields of modern science and law and ethics. So much of how people understand the world today is from this narcisstic perspective.
But If “Seven Oracles” said humanity is not inherently better than the rest of the beings on this planet, then the next point is that humanity has also failed at being a good member of this planet.

The idea that humans should „subdue the earth“ has evolved from a responsibility for creation into a justification for ruthless exploitation. More and more people are becoming aware of this and are beginning to refocus on responsibility.
From a non-human perspective, we are the worst thing to have happened since the mass extinction that wiped out the dinosaurs. And to be human today is to be aware of that knowledge, and to begin to see and understand what we are, where we have come from, and where we are going. I think many people realize it. But there are people and movements and ideologies who dominate society right now that continue to drive us unrelentingly down this path. We are helpless in our own sundering from our own world. This is one reason so many people turn to black metal. To oppose, at least, the Christian Hegemony. But in a larger sense, the entire system is rotten.

I believe this is not just about Christian churches and religious teachings but also about the current systems that are selfish and short-sighted, focused only on their own advantage.
To subvert against these systems and, in doing so, to destroy them—that is Gandr. And when a thousand or a hundred thousand people chant the song, take up the song, take up the chant, the idea is magnified. The powers are magnified.
Sometimes the serpent´s poison needs to fall on Loki´s face. Sometimes we need the earthquake.

But for now, “Gandr”, which has been talked about so often:

Im November haben NEXION (Black Metal aus Island) den Song „Gandr“ veröffentlicht, der mich sofort begeistert hat. Er ist unglaublich intensiv und dynamisch.
‚Gandr‘ bezeichnet u.a. eine magische oder schicksalhafte Kraft, einen Zauber, um eine Transformation hervorzurufen. In den erzählenden englischen Part sind Passagen auf Altnordisch eingebettet, die ein Anruf sind. Die dort genutzten Wörter sind von einer Inschrift aus der späten Wikingerzeit inspiriert. Das Original, das verschiedene ‚Geister‘ aufzulisten scheint, soll ein Schutzzauber gegen sie gewesen sein. Doch nur ein paar geringfügige Veränderungen genügten, um den Schutzzauber in eine andere Art altnordischer Magie zu verwandeln, die Geister gegen Feinde aufhetzt – und genau das haben NEXION in „Gandr“ getan.

Ich hatte die Gelegenheit, Josh Rood, der für den Text und auch die Vocals verantwortlich ist, Fragen zum Song und seinem Hintergrund zu stellen.

NEXION wurde bisher folgendermaßen beschrieben: „Icelandic Black Metal outfit Nexion are the jaws of the wolf on humanity´s throat.“
Ist das weiterhin die Grundlage für eure Musik?
Josh: Ja.

Das ist eine klare Antwort. Es hat bei euch Wechsel im Line-Up gegeben. Was hat sich dadurch im Hinblick auf die Musik, die Themen verändert?Die Besetzungswechsel haben unser Thema nicht beeinflusst. Seit „Seven Oracles“ hat sich unsere Musik sicherlich weiterentwickelt. Aber es ist schwer zu sagen, welche Aspekte der Entwicklung auf die Veränderungen in der Besetzung zurückzuführen sind.

Welche Veränderungen sind für dich besonders deutlich geworden?
Es herrscht ein stärkeres Gefühl der Synchronizität in der Band als zuvor. Unsere Besetzung ist sehr gut aufeinander eingespielt, und der Songwriting-Prozess für das neue Material verlief viel reibungsloser als alles, was wir zuvor gemacht haben. Ich denke, das wird sich in unserer kommenden Musik deutlich zeigen.

Ich habe den Eindruck, dass ihr mit „Gandr“ die Grundidee in eine neue Richtung gelenkt habt.Es geht um Magie, die Geister beschwört, um Feinde zu vernichten und die Möglichkeit, Trauer und Wut in machtvolle Waffen zu verwandeln. Welche Rolle spielen Geister, Magie, Beschwörungen in der heutigen Zeit, die doch immer als  „aufgeklärt“ bezeichnet wird?
Die heutige Welt ist nicht so aufgeklärt. Dieses Gefühl ist ein Symptom der Krankheit, die die Hybris des modernen Menschen ist. Die Denkweise der modernen, wissenschaftlich orientierten Welt ist ironischerweise immer noch sehr christlich ausgerichtet. Als Spezies haben wir in bestimmten Bereichen, wie der Technologie, mehr Wissen entwickelt, aber die sogenannte Aufklärungszeit hat auch die Denkweise der Menschen von einer ganzheitlichen in eine stark segmentierte und extrem dualistische verschoben.

Welche Konsequenzen hat dies auf die Art und Weise, wie wir die Welt und unsere eigene Rolle darin  betrachten?
Wir haben Fortschritte im Verständnis gemacht, wie man die Welt nutzt und wie sie funktioniert, aber wir haben vollständige Wissenssysteme darüber verloren, wie wir in der Welt sein sollten und wie wir sie behandeln sollten.

Geister, Magie und Rituale

Was bedeutet dies für unseren Blick auf etwas wie „Geister“ und „Magie“? Und wie habt ihr das in „Gandr“ aufgegriffen?
Was Geister und Magie betrifft, so basiert das Lied auf traditionellen Praktiken, Es ist sehr „aufgeklärt“, zu versuchen, Dinge wie Geister oder Magie in objektiven, wissenschaftlichen Begriffen zu definieren.

Zumal die Bedeutung auch vom kulturellen Kontext abhängig ist.
Ja, im Altnordischen ist das Wort für Geist „önd“, was Atem, Intellekt, kreative Lebenskraft und auch Wesenheit bedeutet. Die Welt ist voller Geister, ob konzeptionell oder wortwörtlich.
Ob wir es glauben wollen oder nicht, die Art und Weise, wie wir die Welt erleben und verstehen, wird durch Geschichten und Rituale geprägt. Geschichten und Rituale sind auch die Art und Weise, wie wir unsere Art, die Welt zu erleben und zu verstehen, bekräftigen oder verändern. Dies hat direkte Auswirkungen auf unseren Umgang mit der Welt. Ich kann diese Dinge durch unsere Musik beeinflussen und tue das auch.

Und was ist mit „Magie“?
Magie ist ein schwieriges Wort, das ich nicht besonders mag, weil sie immer so dargestellt wird, als wenn sie durch Rituale eine übernatürliche Wirkung erzielen kann.

 Du hast gesagt, dass es eine Entwicklung von ganzheitlichem Denken hin zu einem dualistischen Denken gegeben hat. Dadurch gibt es das Denken in Kategorien wie „gut“ du „böse“, „schwarz“ und „weiß“. Wie siehst du das Konzept von „schwarzer Magie“? Ist es überhaupt sinnvoll, von „schwarzer Magie“ zu sprechen?
„Schwarze Magie“ ist ein Konzept, das vom Christentum verwendet wird und impliziert, dass die Person, die sie ausübt, böse ist, weil diese Person außerhalb und möglicherweise gegen ein christliches System handelt. Die Welt besteht aus konkurrierenden Kräften und Systemen, und wir leben immer noch in einer westlichen Welt, die von christlichem oder, wie du gesagt hast, aufklärerischem Denken dominiert wird, sodass wir zu Begriffen wie „schwarze Magie“ gezwungen sind.

„Ist Black Metal böse?“

D.h. dass der Begriff „schwarze Magie“ nicht in einen alt-nordischen Kontext passt und somit auch nicht zu dem, was „Gandr“ war oder ist, da es in der altnordischen Mythologie eher um ein Gleichgewicht von Kräften oder Energien geht als um eine moralische Dichotomie von gut und böse.
Ist schwarze Magie böse? Ist Black Metal böse? Ich glaube nicht, dass es so ist. Ist Satan böse? Oder inwiefern ist es böse, sich einem Tyrannen oder einem tyrannischen System zu widersetzen?

Dabei muss man ja auch den Zusammenhang, den Hintergrund sehen, von dem aus man die Dinge betrachtet und bewertet.
Wenn wir uns gegen ein etabliertes System stellen, das sich selbst als „richtig und gut“ bezeichnet, sind Leute, die sich dem widersetzen, „böse“. Ich denke, es ist besser, über aggressive, destruktive Einflüsse, heilende, konstruktive Einflüsse, Einflüsse, die den Status quo aufrechterhalten, und Einflüsse, die ihn untergraben und möglicherweise zerstören, zu sprechen. Manchmal muss man zerstören oder subversiv handeln, um Veränderungen herbeizuführen.

Und das kann ja auch bedeuten, auf die Vergangenheit zu schauen, Traditionen aufzugreifen, ihre konstruktiven Elemente zu nutzen, um Veränderungen in der Gegenwart herbeizuführen. Welche Rolle spielt dies für NEXION?
Menschen stellen immer Verbindungen zur Vergangenheit her, selbst wenn sie sich dessen nicht bewusst sind. Ihre Sicht auf die Gegenwart und Erfahrung in der Gegenwart wird vollständig von Ihrer Verbindung zur Vergangenheit geprägt. Sei es die Art des Wissens, das jemand erworben hat, oder die Art und Weise, wie man denkt, dass die Welt funktioniert.
Wenn man sich dieser Tatsache bewusst wird, beginnt man, gezielter zu überlegen, welche Aspekte der Vergangenheit man der eigenen Gegenwart hinzufügt. Wir sehen dies ständig bei konkurrierenden sozialen, politischen oder religiösen Bewegungen. Sie alle nutzen unterschiedliche Beziehungen zu unterschiedlichen Teilen der Vergangenheit, um ihre Gegenwart zu gestalten.

Aus entwicklungspsychologischer Sicht machen das alle Menschen. Jeder von uns ist in seinem aktuellen Verhalten von seiner Beziehung zur Vergangenheit beeinflusst. Wie weit wir das nutzen können, die Gegenwart so zu gestalten, dass es für uns und die Gemeinschaft günstig ist, hängt ja auch davon ab, wie weit man sich dessen bewusst ist.
Ich studiere Religion und Kultur. Insbesondere studiere ich die altnordische Religion, moderne indigene und traditionelle Kulturen, und auch, wie unterschiedliche Glaubensrichtungen und Denkweisen unsere Welt beeinflussen. Da ich dies weiß, ist es gar nicht anders möglich, als dass dies in meinen Texten eine wesentliches Rolle spielt.

Aber es geht dir ja nicht um die Vergangenheit an sich.
Ich singe in NEXION nicht über die Vergangenheit. Ich versuche nicht, ein fiktives heidnisches goldenes Zeitalter zu romantisieren,  und ich erzähle keine Mythen nach. Ich singe über das Hier und Jetzt und über Dinge, die eine tiefe Bedeutung für mich haben. Aber ich gestalte das, worüber ich singe, jedoch anhand von Wissen, das in den Geschichten, Lehren und Ritualen nicht nur der altnordischen Religion, sondern traditioneller Systeme weltweit verankert ist. Diese Wissenssysteme, oder wie du gesagt hast, „Traditionen“, sollen meine Gegenwart prägen. Ich hoffe, dass die Lieder, obwohl sie persönlich sind, etwas Wichtiges über die menschliche Erfahrung und unseren Platz in der heutigen Welt.

Inschriften, Schutzzauber und Beschwörung

Ein Teil des Textes ist in Alt-Nordisch. Ich finde, dass dies den beschwörenden, dringlichen Charakter verstärkt.
Die Wörter sind von einer Inschrift inspiriert, die verschiedene „Geister“ auflistet. So eine Auflistung soll ein Schutzzauber gegen diese Geister gewesen sein.
Es gibt eine Theorie, dass die ursprüngliche Inschrift ein Schutzzauber war. Es gibt noch andere Theorien. Z.B., dass die ursprüngliche Inschrift Teil eines Begräbnisritus war. Für meine Zwecke ist es unerheblich, ob die ursprüngliche Inschrift einen Schutzzauber hatte oder nicht. Die Beschwörung in dem Lied arbeitet ganz bewusst mit den Geistern, die ich rufe.

Reicht es heute nicht mehr, die Geister abzuwehren? Müssen sie angerufen werden, damit sie denen, die ihnen ‚huldigen‘ zeigen, wie es ist, wenn man tatsächlich/selbst mit ihnen zu tun hat?
Ich glaube nicht, dass es eine Frage ist, ob es ausreicht, Geister abzuwehren oder nicht. Das ist nicht das, was dieses spezielle Lied tut. Das ist nicht der Zweck.
Es geht nicht darum, den Menschen den Umgang mit Geistern beizubringen. Tatsächlich ist die Anrufung der Geister nur der letzte Teil eines größeren Rituals. Im Lied erwähne ich weitere Aspekte. Ich heule über die Toten. Ich schnitze einen þurs mit sieben Köpfen in etwas, das nie Stahl berührt oder die Sonne sieht. Das Lied erinnert an diese Taten. Die Anrufung der Geister, um einen Feind zu quälen, ist Teil eines vollständigen Liedes und eines vollständigen Rituals. Ich weiß, ich drücke mich kryptisch aus, aber es spricht einiges dafür, nicht jeden Aspekt eines Textes öffentlich zu machen.

Zu „Gandr“ habt ihr geschrieben: „We can think of a few people who could use a visit from destroying spirits“. An wen oder welche Situationen habt ihr dabei gedacht? Wem sollte der Besuch der zerstörerischen Geister „guttun“?
Nun. Zunächst einmal etwas zu der Geschichte, die mit Gandr verbunden ist: In Skandinavien wird das Konzept „Ganding“ mit dem Volk der Samen in Verbindung gebracht und als schwarze Magie angesehen. Aber das liegt daran, dass die Samen Opfer eines kulturellen Genozids und einer Landvertreibung wurden und gleichzeitig durch das Christentum dämonisiert wurden. In traditionellen Gesellschaften versucht man, wenn man aus Verzweiflung nichts anderes tun kann und weil man sich als Erweiterung des Landes sieht, das Land, die Geister des Landes und alle Wesen des Landes gegen diejenigen aufzubringen, die einen bedrohen.

„Die Menschheit hat darin versagt, ein gutes Element dieses Planeten zu sein“

Die Verbindung des Menschen mit dem Land, mit der Natur, sein Umgang mit ihr, und die Rolle des Menschen hat sich ja gerade durch das Christentum verändert. Und ist ein Thema, mit dem ihr euch auf eurem letzten Album auseinandergesetzt habt.
Unser letztes Album, „Seven Oracles“, hat den Anthropozentrismus zerrissen, die Idee, dass der Mensch dieser überaus wichtige Mittelpunkt der Welt ist. Dass wir über der Natur stehen und mehr inneren Wert haben als alles andere. Vieles von dieser aufgeblähten Sicht des menschlichen Wertes hat übrigens seinen Ursprung im westlichen Kontext des Christentums und wurde in der Aufklärung verschlüsselt.
Christliche Denker, die mit dem großartigen Gefühl aufwuchsen, dass Gott die Menschheit nach seinem Bilde geschaffen hat, um über den Rest der Welt zu herrschen, haben die Bereiche der modernen Wissenschaft, des Rechts und der Ethik geprägt. Vieles von dem, wie die Menschen heute die Welt verstehen, beruht auf dieser narzisstischen Perspektive.
Aber wenn es in „Seven Oracles“ darum ging, dass die Menschheit nicht von Natur aus besser ist als der Rest der Lebewesen auf diesem Planeten, dann ist der nächste Punkt, dass die Menschheit auch darin versagt hat, ein gutes Element dieses Planeten zu sein.

Die Idee, dass sich der Mensch die Welt untertan machen soll, hat sich ja im Verlauf weg von der Verantwortung für die Schöpfung hin zu einer Rechtfertigung für die rücksichtslose Ausbeutung entwickelt. Immer mehr Menschen werden sich dessen bewusst und stellen die Verantwortung wieder in den Mittelpunkt.
Aus einer nicht-menschlichen Perspektive sind wir das Schlimmste, was seit dem Massenaussterben passiert ist, das die Dinosaurier ausgelöscht hat. Und heute ein Mensch zu sein bedeutet, sich dieses Wissens bewusst zu sein und zu beginnen, zu sehen und zu verstehen, was wir sind, woher wir kommen und wohin wir gehen. Ich denke, viele Menschen erkennen das. Aber es gibt Menschen und Bewegungen und Ideologien, die die Gesellschaft im Moment dominieren und uns weiterhin unerbittlich auf diesen Weg treiben. Wir sind hilflos in der Abspaltung von unserer eigenen Welt. Dies ist einer der Gründe, warum sich so viele Menschen dem Black Metal zuwenden. Um sich zumindest der christlichen Hegemonie entgegenzustellen. Aber im weiteren Sinne ist das ganze System verrottet.

Ich denke, dass es hier nicht nur um die christlichen Kirchen und religiösen Lehren geht, sondern um die aktuellen Systeme, die egoistisch und kurzfristig nur auf ihren eigenen Vorteil bedacht sind.
Diese Systeme zu unterwandern und auf diese Weise zu zerstören: Das ist Gandr. Und wenn tausend oder hunderttausend Menschen das Lied anstimmen, den Sprechgesang aufnehmen, wird die Idee verstärkt. Die Kräfte werden verstärkt. Manchmal muss das Gift der Schlange Lokis Antlitz treffen. Manchmal brauchen wir das Erdbeben.

NEBALA veröffentlichen heute die komplette Show vom Midgardsblót-Festival

NEBALA haben heute „Nebala – Live at the Blót“ veröffentlicht. In den letzten Wochen wurden bereits erste Videos herausgebracht. Darüber habe ich bereits berichtet (z.B. HIER) . Daher stelle ich heute die letzten noch fehlenden Lieder vor. „Ant M​é​r Sjalfri Þ​é​r“, „Surgō Sebō“ und „Blotha Huñaga Bola​ñ​an Alu“ sind auch die letzten Lieder ihrer Show auf dem Midgardsblot-Festival. Das Album „Nebala – Live at the Blót“ ist bereits am 21. April 2023 auf allen Streamingplattformen veröffentlicht worden.

NEBALA ist das Projekt von Jonas Lorentzen, der bis 2019 Vocalist bei HEILUNG war. Aus der Zusammenarbeit mit Sebastian Gainsborough („Vessel“, The Northman) und Kjell Braaten (WARDRUNA, ORIGAMI GALAKTIKA) entstanden die EP „Lustuz“ (2020). Eigentlich sollte das Debütalbum im gleichen Jahr erscheinen, was aber pandemiebedingt nicht möglich war.  So wurde die Zeit genutzt, um weiter am Konzept und der Musik zu arbeiten. Das 2022 erschienene Album „Lustuz Laþu Wōþuz Alu“ wurde von Kjell Braaten aufgenommen, gemischt und produziert. „Nebala – Live at the Blót“ hat Fieke van den Hurk aufgenommen. Kjell Braaten hat Mixing und Produktion übernommen und Iver Sandøy (ENSLAVED) hat das Ganze gemastert.

NEBALA – Live

Das Midgardsblot Open-Air Festival findet seit 2015 in Borre in Norwegen statt. und präsentiert dem Publikum Bands aus Metal, Folk und Dark Ambient. 2022 haben dort u.a. WARDRUNA, ROTTING CHRIST, HEILUNG, PRIMORDIAL, EINHERJER, GAERA und NYTT LAND gespielt.

NEBALA haben dort, wie die Videos zeigen, eine einzigartige Show abgeliefert. Die Aufnahmen wurden von Sara Bøgh künstlerisch bearbeitet. Daher sind die Videos nicht nur eine Dokumentation der Show, sondern ein Medium, das die Wirkung der Lieder durch fantastische Bilder verstärkt.

Musik muss man live erleben. Sie ist wie jemand, der dir in die Augen schaut und dir mit seinem ganzen Wesen sagt, dass er dich liebt. Oder eine herzliche, warme Umarmung von einem Freund in einer Zeit, in der das alles war, was man brauchte. Das war’s! In einem einzigen zerbrechlichen Moment der Ewigkeit, und er wird nie wieder kommen oder auf dieselbe Weise erlebt werden.

NEBALA haben mit ihrer Musik und zuletzt auch mit den Videos etwas Ungewöhnliches und Neues entwickelt. Musikalisch ist es eine einzigartige Verbindung traditioneller Instrumente, archaischer Klänge, außergewöhnlicher rhythmischer Strukturen und experimenteller Elemente.

Urnordisch und Verse aus der Edda

Verse und Geschichten aus der Hávamál, Skirnismál und von Runensteinen sind die Grundlage der Texte der Lieder. Sie erzählen von Sehnsucht und Schmerz sowie von Zuversicht, Vertrauen, Verwandlungen und Übergängen. Während die Lieder der Edda in Altnordisch geschrieben wurden, ist Jonas Lorentzen (in Zusammenarbeit mit Dr. Mathias Nordvig) mit der Verwendung des Ur-Nordischen zeitlich noch einen Schritt zurück gegangen, um eine Art spiritueller Sprache zu schaffen. Alte Sprachen wurden immer schon für Riten verwendet. Dadurch, dass die Wörter nicht in einem alltäglichen oder profanen Zusammenhang verwendet werden, behalten sie eine ursprüngliche Bedeutung.

Liebe mich wie dich selbst

„Ant mér sjálfri þér“ hat für mich musikalisch wie thematisch das Zentrum des Albums „Lustuz Laþu Wōþuz Alu“ dargestellt. Musikalisch in der Verbindung elementarer, archaischer Klänge mit avantgardistischen, experimentellen Elementen. Und durch die Frage: Was braucht es, damit es möglich wird, sich selbst mit seinen hellen und dunklen Seiten annehmen und dem anderen ohne Maske eigen zu können?

In der Show folgt es auf „Laþu“. (Zu diesen beiden Liedern gab es bereits zwei ganz besondere Videos, die zeigen, welche Verbindung es zwischen den beiden Liedern gibt ! ) Daher ist es schlüssig, dass „Ant mér sjálfri þér“ an dieser Stelle kommt. Auch in der Show ist dieses Lied für mich das Zentrum, auf das die vorherigen Lieder musikalisch und inhaltlich zuströmen.

Die Bühne ist in pulsierenden Nebel getaucht. Der Klang der Lure leitet das Lied ein. Dann bauen NEBALA einen mehrstimmigen Gesang auf, der an Rituale und Liturgie erinnert. Die Beleuchung verstärkt diesen Eindruck. Der folgende Sprechgesang ist Selbstgespräch und Auseinandersetzung: nachdenklich, verunsichert, fragend, anklagend, flehend: „Ant Mér Sjalfri Þér“. Unheimliche anschwellende Klänge wie in einem bösen Traum, mit Geistern der eigenen unguten Handlungen und Gedanken. Verstärkt wird dies dadurch, dass die Bilder von pulsierenden Strukturen überzogen werden. Und dann vertreibt Josh sie mit archaischer Energie. Es ist wie ein Kampf mit dunklen Elementen. Auch diese Auseinandersetzung mündet in den Ruf: „Ant Mér Sjalfri Þér“.Er ist hier Forderung, Bedingungen und verzweifelte Sehnsucht zugleich. Die Anspannung wird über das gesamte Lieder immer größer und entlädt sich in einem überwältigenden Schluss.

„Surgō Sebō“ – Worte und Körperlichkeit

„Surgō Sebō“ ist wie eine Befreiung nach der vorangegangenen bedrückenden Verzweiflung und Anspannung.
Es ist ein großartiges Stück! Denn seine komplexen rhythmischen Strukturen, die mit ihren Schwingungen den ganzen Körper erreichen, bringen den Zuhörer unweigerlich in Bewegung. Man kann das Publikum nicht sehen, aber so weit ich es mitbekommen habe, waren alle in Bewegung. Ich konnte  jedenfalls nicht stillstehen. Bei  „Surgō Sebō“  fügen sich Erleben und Sein in Klang und Rhythmus zusammen und es entsteht eine energetische und bewegungsreiche Performance, bei der alle auf der Bühne in Bewegung sind. Josh tanzt mit breiten und ausdrucksstarken Bewegungen, die den Grundrhythmus aufnehmen, während die anderen in ihren Bewegungen den Rhythmus variieren. Der Tanz ergänzt Melodie, Rhythmus und Wörter zu einer Ganzheitlichkeit, die körperlich spürbar ist.  

Jonas singt mit tiefer und voller Stimme. Stimmliche Möglichkeiten werden ausgelotet (immerhin haben sie fünf tolle Sänger auf der Bühne) und die Rufe klingen wie eine Befreiung. Die Lautmalereien und Wörter bilden den Rhythmus. Auch wenn man die Wörter vielleicht nicht versteht, entfalten sie ihre Wirkung und Macht.

Die Performance auf der Bühne wechselt zwischen wilden, rohen und feinen harmonischen Momenten, was zu einem beeindruckenden Spannungsaufbau und -abbau führt. Insbesondere dann, wenn die Stimmen aufeinander aufbauend die Klänge erweitern und dann wieder harmonisch zusammenfügen. Oder auch im Dialog „Surgō – Sebō“ zwischen Jonas und Josh.

Vom Menschen zum Kosmos mit magischen Worten

Nachdem „Surgō Sebō“ Emotion, Körper und Geist wieder miteinander verschmolzen hat, werden bei „Blotha Huñaga Bolañan Alu“ Zeit und Kosmos einbezogen. Daher ist „Blotha Huñaga Bolañan Alu“ ein fantastischer Abschluss für die Show.

Durch die ruhige Eröffnung entsteht eine andächtige Stimmung. Nach und nach verbinden sich die rhythmischen und klanglichen Strukturen zu einem ekstatischen Ganzen. Der rituelle Gesang mit Namen uralter Göttinnen und Wörtern, die in der nordischen Mythologie als magisch gelten, verstärken diesen Eindruck. Dieses Lied fasst die Ideen und Gedanken der vorangegangenen Lieder zusammen: die Auseinandersetzung mit sich selbst, mit der ‚spirituellen‘ Verbindung von Schöpfung und Sexualität als Grundlage für Inspiration und Kreativität.

Der Text besteht aus den als magisch verstandenen Wörtern Fuþark, Alu, Laukaz, Laþu, Ehwuz, Wōþurīþaz und den Namen alter Göttinnen: Alusnehija, Fala, Fakinehija und Frīagābis.

Allein dadurch, wie Josh Rood mit tiefer (und schwarz-metallischer) Stimme diese Wörter singt und dies dann von Ilaria Orefices heller Stimme aufgenommen wird, schafft magische, beschwörende Momente. Und wenn sich dann die Klänge der Percussion verdichten, sich mit dem beschwörenden Flüstern und Rufen verbinden, spürt man die Mächtigkeit dieses Liedes noch einmal ganz besonders.   

Magie und großartige Musik

Die Lieder so wie die gesamte Show sind fesselnd, magisch und sowohl geerdet wie auch spirituell. Denn die Musik und die Klänge sind eindringlich und kraftvoll. Die sowohl elementaren wie auch komplexen und experimentellen rhythmischen und klanglichen Strukturen sind wunderbar miteinander verwoben. So entstehen mystische, unheimliche und harmonische, beruhigende Momente. Und sie bieten die Möglichkeit, sich den eigenen hellen und dunklen Anteilen zu nähern, sowie den Sehnsüchten und der Schönheit von Ekstase.

Die Musik von NEBALA ist ungewöhnlich, neu, befremdlich aber auch bekannt und wunderschön. Und immer mit einer unglaublichen Intensität und Kraft.

Das hat wohl auch das Publikum so erlebt. Denn es spendet begeisterten Applaus.

NEBALA have released „Nebala – Live at the Blót“ today. The first videos have already been released in the last few weeks. I have already reported about that (e.g. HERE) . So today I present the last missing songs. „Ant Mér Sjalfri Þér“, „Surgō Sebō“ and „Blotha Huñaga Bolañan Alu“ are also the last songs of their show at the Midgardsblot Festival. The album „Nebala – Live at the Blót“ has already been released on all streaming platforms on 21 April 2023.

NEBALA is the project of Jonas Lorentzen, who was the vocalist for HEILUNG until 2019. The collaboration with Sebastian Gainsborough („Vessel“, The Northman) and Kjell Braaten (WARDRUNA, ORIGAMI GALAKTIKA) resulted in the EP „Lustuz“ (2020). Actually, the debut album was supposed to be released in the same year, but this was not possible due to the pandemic.  So the time was used to continue working on the concept and the music. The album „Lustuz Laþu Wōþuz Alu“, released in 2022, was recorded, mixed and produced by Kjell Braaten. „Nebala – Live at the Blót“ was recorded by Fieke van den Hurk. Kjell Braaten did the mixing and production and Iver Sandøy (ENSLAVED) mastered the whole thing.

NEBALA – Live

The Midgardsblot Festival has been held in Borre, Norway, since 2015 and presents bands from the fields of metal, folk and dark ambient to the audience. In 2022, WARDRUNA, ROTTING CHRIST, HEILUNG, PRIMORDIAL, EINHERJER, GAERA and NYTT LAND, among others, played there.

NEBALA put on a unique show there, as the videos show. The recordings were artistically edited by Sara Bøgh. Therefore, the videos are not only a documentation of the show, but a medium that enhances the effect of the songs through fantastic images.

Music needs to be experienced live. It’s like someone looking you in the eye, and telling you with the entirety of their being that they love you. Or a heartfelt, warm embrace from a friend at a time where, that was all that was needed. There it is! In one fragile moment of eternity, and it will never come again or be experienced in that same way.

NEBALA have developed something unusual and new with their music and most recently also with the videos. Musically, it is a unique combination of traditional instruments, archaic sounds, extraordinary rhythmic structures and experimental elements.

Ur – Nordic and verses from the Edda

Verses and stories from the Hávamál, Skirnismál and runestones are the basis of the songs‘ lyrics. They tell of longing and pain as well as confidence, trust, transformations and transitions. While the songs of the Edda were written in Old Norse, Jonas Lorentzen (in collaboration with Dr Mathias Nordvig) has gone back a step in time by using Ur-Nordic to create a kind of spiritual language. Ancient languages have always been used for rites. By not being used in an everyday or profane context, the words retain an original meaning.

Love me like you love yourself – „Ant mér sjálfri þér“

„Ant mér sjálfri þér“ has represented for me the centre of the album „Lustuz Laþu Wōþuz Alu“ both musically and thematically. Musically in the combination of elementary, archaic sounds with avant-garde, experimental elements. And thematically through the question: What does it take for it to become possible to accept oneself with its light and dark sides and to be able to be one’s own to the other without a mask?

In the show it follows „Laþu“.( There were already two very special videos for these two songs, which show what connection there is between the two songs !) Therefore it is logical that „Ant mér sjálfri þér“ comes at this point. Also in the show, this song is for me the centre towards which the previous songs flow musically and in terms of content.

The stage is bathed in pulsating mist. The sound of the lure introduces the song. Then NEBALA build up a polyphonic chant reminiscent of rituals and liturgy. The lighting reinforces this impression. The following chant is soliloquy and confrontation: pensive, uncertain, questioning, accusing, pleading: „Ant Mér Sjalfri Þér“. Eerie swelling sounds as in a bad dream, with ghosts of one’s unpleasant actions and thoughts. This is intensified by the fact that the images are covered by pulsating structures. And then Josh dispels them with archaic energy. It is like a battle with dark elements. This struggle also leads to the call: „Ant Mér Sjalfri Þér“. Here it is demand, conditions and desperate longing at the same time. The tension increases throughout the entire song and discharges in an overwhelming conclusion.

„Surgō Sebō“ – Words and Materiality

„Surgō Sebō“ is like a release after the previous oppressive despair and tension.

It is a great piece! Because its complex rhythmic structures, which reach the whole body with their vibrations, inevitably get the listener moving. You can’t see the audience, but as far as I could tell, everyone was in motion. I certainly couldn’t stand still. In „Surgō Sebō“, experiencing and being merged in sound and rhythm to create an energetic and moving performance, with everyone on stage in motion. Josh dances with broad and expressive movements that pick up the basic rhythm, while the others vary the rhythm in their movements. The dance complements the melody, rhythm and words into a wholeness that can be felt physically. 

Jonas sings in a deep and full voice. Vocal possibilities are explored (after all, they have five great singers on stage) and the shouts sound like a release. The onomatopoeias and words build the rhythm. Even if you might not understand the words, they unfold their effect and power.

The performance on stage alternates between wild, raw and subtle harmonic moments, resulting in an impressive build-up and release of tension. Especially when the voices build on each other, expanding the sounds and then joining them together again harmoniously. Or also in the dialogue „Surgō – Sebō“ between Jonas and Josh.

From man to cosmos with magic words

After „Surgō Sebō“ has merged emotion, body and mind again, „Blotha Huñaga Bolañan Alu“ involves time and the cosmos. Therefore, „Blotha Huñaga Bolañan Alu“ is a fantastic ending to the show.

The quiet opening creates a devotional mood. Gradually, the rhythmic and tonal structures combine into an ecstatic whole. The ritual chanting with names of ancient goddesses and words considered magical in Norse mythology reinforce this impression. This song summarises the ideas and thoughts of the previous songs: the examination of oneself, of the ’spiritual‘ connection between creation and sexuality as the basis for inspiration and creativity.

The text consists of the words Fuþark, Alu, Laukaz, Laþu, Ehwuz, Wōþurīþaz, which are understood as magical, and the names of ancient goddesses: Alusnehija, Fala, Fakinehija and Frīagābis.

The mere fact that Josh Rood sings these words in a deep (and black-metallic) voice, which is then taken up by Ilaria Orefice’s bright voice, creates magical, evocative moments.

And when the sounds of the percussion then condense, combined with the evocative whispers and shouts, you feel the power of this song all over again.  

Magic and great music

The songs as well as the whole show are captivating, magical and both grounded and spiritual. For the music and sounds are haunting and powerful. The rhythmic and sonic structures, both elemental and complex and experimental, are beautifully interwoven. This creates mystical, eerie and harmonious, calming moments. And they offer the possibility to approach one’s own light and dark parts, as well as the longings and beauty of ecstasy.

NEBALA’s music is unusual, new, and disconcerting but also familiar and beautiful. And always with incredible intensity and power.

The audience must have experienced it the same way. Because they gave enthusiastic applause.

NEBALA veröffentlichen heute erstes Video ihrer Show auf dem Midgardsblot Metal Festival

NEBALA haben im August 2022 eine großartige Show auf dem Midgardsblot Festival gespielt.

Das Midgardsblot ist ein Open-Air Festival, auf dem in 2022  u.a.  WARDRUNA, PRIMORDIAL, GAERA, NYTT LAND, EINHERJER, HEILUNG und ROTTING CHRIST gespielt haben.

Midgardsblot findet in Borre bei Horten in Norwegen statt. Und zwar auf historischem Boden. In Borre gibt es mehrere Wikinger-Grabhügel. Dort steht auch die Gildenhalle, eine einzigartige Rekonstruktion einer großen Wikingerhalle.

Neben Bands aus den Bereichen Metal, Folk, Dark Ambient gibt es in jedem Jahr Vorträge, Podiumsdiskussionen und Ausstellungen.

Midgardsblot: Vielfalt feiern

Im Zentrum des Festivals steht die Idee, ein neutraler Ort zu sein, an dem es darum geht, Grenze zu überwinden, das Gemeinsame und die Vielfalt zu feiern. Also ein Ort für alle Menschen. Unabhängig von der Nationalität, dem kulturellen Hintergrund, der ethnischen Zugehörigkeit oder der sexuellen Orientierung.

NEBALA überwinden Grenzen

Grenzen überwinden – sowohl musikalisch als auch in philosophischer Hinsicht – ist einer der zentralen Punkte bei NEBALA.

NEBALA spielen in ihrer Musik sowohl mit klanglichen als auch zeitlichen und kulturellen Grenzen. Ihre Lieder basieren auf altnordischer Mythologie und deren Verständnis der Verbindung von Sexualität und Kreativität als Quelle von Gesang und Poesie.

Aus dem Spiel mit traditionellen Instrumenten wie Leiern, Hörnern, Tagelharpa, Organistrum, tibetischen Klangschalen und verschiedenen Formen des Kehlgesangs haben NEBALA einen neuen indo-nordischen Klang geformt.

Die Verwendung der proto-nordischen Sprache, Versen aus den Hávamál, den Namen von Runen und Göttern ermöglicht einen anderen Zugang sowohl zur Musik als auch den philosophischen Überlegungen, die den Liedern zusätzlich Kraft verleihen. (Mehr dazu HIER und im Interview mit Jonas Lorentzen)

„Skinanariaz“ beginnt beschwörend mit tiefen Vocals und bewegt innerlich und äußerlich durch die Rhythmen der immer intensiver werdenden Trommeln. Darüber entfaltet sich eine wunderbare Melodie, die von Sehnsucht, Wut, Fesseln und Schmerz singt. Das Lied ist eine Umsetzung der Interaktion zwischen diesen Elementen.

Auch wenn man die Wörter nicht versteht, kann man diese Interaktion spüren. Diesen Widerstreit haben Jonas Lorentzen und Josh Rood (von der isländischen Black Metal Band NEXION) ausdrucksvoll dargestellt.
Auf das Video „Skinanariaz“ werden im Februar noch zwei weitere Videos und später die Aufzeichnung des gesamten Konzertes folgen.

In diesem Jahr wird es außerdem weitere Möglichkeiten geben, NEBALA live zu erleben. Dazu demnächst mehr.

NEBALA played a great show at the Midgardsblot Festival in August 2022.

Midgardsblot is an open-air festival where in 2022 WARDRUNA, PRIMORDIAL, GAERA, NYTT LAND, EINHERJER, HEILUNG and ROTTING CHRIST played.

Midgardsblot takes place in Borre near Horten in Norway. And it is on historical ground. There are several Viking burial mounds in Borre. There is also the Guild Hall, a unique reconstruction of a large Viking hall.

Besides bands from the fields of metal, folk, and dark ambient, there are lectures, panel discussions and exhibitions every year.

Celebrating diversity

At the heart of the festival is the idea of being a neutral place to cross borders, to celebrate what we have in common and diversity. In other words, a place for all people. Regardless of nationality, cultural background, ethnicity or sexual orientation.

NEBALA: overcoming boundaries

Overcoming boundaries – both musically and philosophically – is one of the central points of NEBALA.

NEBALA play with sonic as well as temporal and cultural boundaries in their music. Their songs are based on Old Norse mythology and its understanding of the connection between sexuality and creativity as the source of song and poetry.

Playing traditional instruments such as lyres, horns, Tagelharpa, Organistrum, Tibetan singing bowls and various forms of throat singing, NEBALA have formed a new Indo-Nordic sound.

The use of the proto-Nordic language, verses from the Hávamál, and the names of runes and gods allows a different approach to both the music and the philosophical reflections that give the songs additional power. (Read more HERE and in the interview with Jonas Lorentzen).

“Skinanariaz“ begins evocatively with deep vocals and moves inwardly and outwardly through the rhythms of the increasingly intense drums. Above this, a wonderful melody unfolds, singing of longing, anger, and pain. The song is a realisation of the interaction between these elements.

Even if you don’t understand the words, you can feel this interaction. Jonas Lorentzen and Josh Rood (from the Icelandic black metal band NEXION) have expressively portrayed this contradiction.

NEBALA spielen ein beeindruckendes Konzert auf dem CASTLEFEST

NEBALA ist das Projekt von Jonas Lorentzen, der bis 2019 Vocalist bei HEILUNG war. Aus der Zusammenarbeit mit Sebastian Gainsborough („Vessel“, The Northman) und Kjell Braaten (WARDRUNA, ORIGAMI GALACTICA) entstanden die EP „Lustuz“ (2020) und das Album „Lustuz Laþu Wōþuz Alu“ (2022). Die Live – Show an diesem Abend ist der erste Auftritt von NEBALA.

Das Konzert findet in einer besonderen Umgebung und in einem speziellen Moment statt: auf der großen Forest-Stage des CASTLEFESTs direkt im Anschluss an das Wicker – Ritual. Dieses Ritual findet hier in jedem Jahr statt und ist für die Beteiligten ein emotionales Ereignis.

Direkt nach solch einem spirituellen Moment zu spielen, ist sicher eine besondere Herausforderung. Jonas Lorentzen wird sich dieser Herausforderung bewusst sein, da er bereits 2017 mit HEILUNG an dieser Stelle gestanden hat.

Musik als Brücke zur Spiritualität

Wer „Lustuz“ und/oder das Album „Lustuz Laþu Wōþuz Alu“ bereits gehört hat weiß, dass NEBALAs Musik voll Leidenschaft und Energie ist – und so eine Brücke zu spirituellen Erfahrungen herstellen kann.

NEBALA beginnen mit sanften, verhaltenen Trommelschlägen und gefühlvollem mehrstimmigen Gesang. Dadurch entsteht direkt eine spannende und meditative Stimmung. Im Publikum sind Neugier und Erwartung auf das, was kommen wird, spürbar.

Klänge, Melodien und Stimmen verbinden sich bei „Alagabia“ ruhig und gefühlvoll miteinander. So hat der Zuhörer Zeit, sich auf die Klänge einzulassen und die entstehenden Emotionen wahrzunehmen.

Ein tiefer Grundton und lockender Gesang bilden den Anfang von „Safijan“. Der intensiver werdende Rhythmus überträgt sich auf das Publikum, das sich schon bald in diesem Rhythmus mitbewegt. Der aggressive Sprechgesang, den Ilaria Orefice ungeschönt vorträgt, hat etwas Verstörendes und gleichzeitig Anziehendes.   Schwarz und weiß geschminkt, energiegeladen und in auch bedrohlich wirkender Körperhaltung antwortet Josh Rood darauf mit rauem Kehlgesang. Die Kraft und Dynamik dieser Auseinandersetzung lässt Jonas Lorentzens Gesang zum Ende des Liedes in versöhnliche und zärtliche Klänge fließen.

Indo-nordische Klangwelt

Auch „Skīnanārijaz“ bewegt innerlich und äußerlich durch die Rhythmen der immer intensiver werdenden Trommeln. Darüber entfaltet sich eine wunderbare Melodie, die sowohl sehnsuchtsvoll als auch schmerzlich klingt.

Was sich bisher schon angedeutet hat wird mit „Laþu“ und „Ant mér sjálfri þér“ intensiviert: ein tiefer Grundton, beschwörender mehrstimmiger Gesang, verzweifelt, wild, verrückt. Avantgardistische und doch berührende und bekannte Klänge.

Beim Publikum ist eine spürbare Spannung entstanden. Die stampfenden Rhythmen und die archaischen Klänge sowohl der Instrumente als auch des Gesangs übertragen sich in Wellen auf das Publikum. Dabei kommt Josh Rood eine besondere Rolle zu: er nutzt mal intensiven, kontrollierten dann ungezügelten und wilden Kehlgesang und drückt diese verschieden Energien mit unglaublicher Präsenz aus.

Der Gesang von Jonas Lorentzen wirkt hier wie ein Gegenpart: nachdenklich, zweifelnd, verzweifelt und liebevoll umfangend zugleich. Wenn sie sich gegenüberstehen und miteinander interagieren, kommen die Dämonen, mit denen wir alle in unterschiedlicher Weise zu kämpfen haben, zum Vorschein.

Was für eine Intensität! Über eine lange Zeit wird man nicht aus der Spannung gelassen, die entweder durch den Rhythmus oder das Wechselspiel des Gesangs aufgebaut wird. Ist es hier etwas ‚ruhiger‘ kommen von den Saiten- und Blasinstrumenten Töne und Melodien, die aufhorchen lassen und wachsam machen, beunruhigen oder versöhnlich stimmen. Ein Wechselbad der Gefühle.

Die Anspannung, die sich bisher aufgebaut hat, löst sich bei „Surgō Sebō“ befreiend auf und die Menge vor der Bühne tanzt ausgelassen zu seinem dynamischen Rhythmus.

Nach dem aufwühlenden Wechselbad der Gefühle und dem befreienden Tanz bringt „Blotha Huñaga Bolañan Alu“ all dies zur Ruhe. Der Gesang mit Worten in einer Sprache aus lange vergangener Zeit ist magisch, sehnsuchtsvoll und zugleich zuversichtlich.

Ungewöhnliches: Instrumente, Stimmen, Kleidung und Lichteffekte

NEBALA haben das Publikum bei ihrem ersten Auftritt zunehmend in ihren Bann gezogen. Der Applaus wurde stärker und anhaltender. Die unerwarteten Entwicklungen bzw. Wendung in den Liedern wurden begeistert angenommen.

Die Instrumente, die NEBALA verwenden, sind nicht alltäglich: Lure, Leier, Organistrum, Klangschalen, Hörner.  Das Gute an einem Live-Auftritt ist ja auch, dass man sehen kann, welche Töne und Klänge mit welchen Instrumenten produziert werden. Auch hier gab es überraschende Eindrücke.

Die gesangliche Spannbreite, die NEBALA heute mit sechs Gesangsstimmen umsetzten, reicht vom Obertongesang bis zu tiefem Kehlgesang.

Außerdem sorgten die Lichteffekte auf der weißen Kleidung der Musiker für Bilder, die die Magie des Augenblicks verstärkt haben.

NEBALA haben einen Zugang zu anderen Dimensionen der Wahrnehmung ermöglicht

Die Verwendung der urnordischen Sprache und Geschichten aus der Hávamál verleihen den Liedern einen rituellen Charakter. Die Worte nicht zu verstehen, macht es möglich, sich ganz auf die Musik und die damit verbundenen Emotionen einzulassen.

Die Art und Weise, wie hier Klänge und Melodien miteinander verwoben, aber auch im Kampf miteinander sind, ist neu. Und die experimentellen und avantgardistischen Elemente, geben den Liedern manchmal etwas ‚Außerweltliches‘.

Es ist eine kraftvolle Musik, die ungewöhnlich, wunderschön und manchmal befremdlich klingt

NEBALA haben mit ihrer Musik einen Zugang zu Magie, Mystik und oft unbeachteten Dimensionen der Wirklichkeit ermöglicht.

Musik und Sprache sind flüchtig. Aber die Erinnerung an die Energie des gemeinsam Erlebten wird noch lange bleiben.

NEBALA had an impressive concert at CASTLEFEST

NEBALA is a project of Jonas Lorentzen, who was a vocalist for HEILUNG until 2019. The collaboration with Sebastian Gainsborough („Vessel“, The Northman) and Kjell Braaten (WARDRUNA, ORIGAMI GALACTICA) resulted in the EP „Lustuz“ (2020) and the album „Lustuz Laþu Wōþuz Alu“ (2022). The live show this evening is NEBALA’s first live performance.

This concert took place in a unique environment and at a special moment: on the large Forest Stage of CASTLEFEST directly after the Wicker Ritual. This ritual takes place here every year and is an emotional event for those involved.

Playing directly after such a spiritual moment is certainly a particular challenge. Jonas Lorentzen is aware of this challenge, as he has already stood in this place in 2017 with HEILUNG.

Music as a bridge to spirituality

Anyone who has already heard „Lustuz“ and/or the album „Lustuz Laþu Wōþuz Alu“ knows that NEBALA’s music is full of passion and energy – and can thus create a bridge to spiritual experiences.

NEBALA start with soft, restrained drumbeats and soulful polyphonic singing. This immediately creates an exciting and meditative mood. You can feel the curiosity and excitement for what is to come.

Sounds, melodies and voices combine calmly and soulfully in „Alagabia“. This gives the listener time to get involved with the sounds and perceive the emotions that arise.

A deep fundamental tone and enticing vocals form the beginning of „Safijan“. The increasingly intense rhythm is transferred to the audience, who soon move along with it. The aggressive chanting, which Ilaria Orefice performs unadorned, has something disturbing and attractive at the same time. Body and face painted in black and white, energetic and in a posture that also seems threatening, Josh Rood responds to this with rough throat singing. The power and dynamics of this confrontation let Jonas Lorentzen’s singing flow into conciliatory and tender sounds at the end of the song.

Indo-Nordic sound

“Skīnanārijaz“ also moves internally and externally through the rhythms of the increasingly intense drums. A wonderful melody unfolds above it, sounding both yearning and painful.

What has been foreshadowed so far is intensified with „Laþu“ and „Ant mér sjálfri þér“: a deep underlying tone, evocative polyphonic singing, desperate, wild, crazy. Avant-garde yet touching and familiar sounds.

A palpable tension arises in the audience. The pounding rhythms and the archaic sounds of both the instruments and the vocals are transmitted to the audience in waves. Josh Rood plays a special role: he sometimes uses intense, controlled, then unbridled and wild throat singing and expresses these different energies with incredible presence.

Jonas Lorentzen’s singing acts as a counterpart here: pensive, doubtful, desperate and lovingly embracing at the same time. When they face each other and interact, the demons we all struggle with come out.

What an intensity! For a long time, you are not let out of the tension built up either by the rhythm or the interplay of the vocals. When it is a bit ‚calmer‘, tones and melodies come from the string- and wind instruments that make you listen and attentive, worry or make you feel conciliatory. A rollercoaster of emotions.

The tension that has built up so far dissolves liberatingly during „Surgō Sebō“ and the crowd in front of the stage dances exuberantly to its dynamic rhythm.

After the stirring ride of emotions and the liberating dance, „Blotha Huñaga Bolañan Alu“ brings this all to rest. Singing with words in a language from long ago is magical, yearning and confident at the same time.

Unusual: instruments, voices, clothes and light effects

NEBALA increasingly captivated the audience at their first performance. The applause became stronger and more persistent. And the unexpected developments or turns in the songs were enthusiastically received.

The instruments NEBALA use are not common: lure, lyre, organistrum, singing bowls, horns.  It is good about a live performance that you can see which tones and sounds are made by which instruments. Here, too, there were surprising impressions.

The vocal range, which NEBALA realised today with six voices, reaches from overtone singing to deep throat singing.

In addition, the light effects on the white clothing of the musicians created images that enhanced the magic of the moment.

NEBALA have provided access to other dimensions of perception

The use of the Proto-Nordic language and stories from the Hávamál give the songs a ritual character. Not understanding the words makes it possible to fully engage with the music and the emotions associated with it.

The way sounds and melodies are interwoven here, but also at war with each other, is new. And the experimental and avant-garde elements, sometimes give the songs something ‚other-worldly‘.

It is powerful music that sounds unusual, beautiful and sometimes alienating.

With their music, NEBALA have provided access to magic, mysticism and often unnoticed dimensions of reality.

Music and speech are fleeting. But the memory of the energy of the shared experience will remain for a long time.
