Willkommen zum dritten Teil der METALHEADs Toplist 2024. Dieses Jahr gab es auch in diesem Bereich hochkarätige Veröffentlichungen. Darunter sind auch starke Alben von Bands aus Deutschland. Und hier sind es sogar zwei Bands aus dem Ruhrpott, nämlich DARKNESS und CORPORAL SHRED. Außerdem ist wieder einmal die Kultband FLOTSAM AND JETSAM mit einem genialen Album vertreten. Die sind wirklich immer noch so heiß wie Frittenfett, obwohl sie mit zu den ältesten Bands in diesem Genre zählen.

CORPORAL SHRED „Thrashtosterone“

Ruhrpott-Thrash, die Erste! CORPORAL SHRED aus Essen sind vollgepumt mit „Thrashtosterone“. Und damit lassen sie es mit stürmischer Spielfreude gehörig krachen und entfesseln einen wahren Thrash-Tornado. Den Songs besitzen eine schöne Eingängigkeit, wie sie sich z.B. direkt beim Refrain des Openers „My Arena“ darstellt. Das fordert geradezu gesanglich aus vollem Halse mit einzusteigen. Mit „Lies“ zeigt man sich durchaus mal von einer sehr melodischen Seite. Die Songs strotzen nur so vor dynamischer Energie und man bemerkt die Bemühungen aus den starren bekannten Songkonzepten auszubrechen, was auch ganz gut gelingt. Und auch wenn da noch Luft nach oben ist, so ist „Thrashtoserone“ eine Thrash-Metal-Perle in diesem Jahr. Ich freue mich auf mehr von dieser Band.

REZET „Rezet“

REZET ist eine Band, die gerne auch mal experimentiert und andere Wege einschlägt. Zumindest war das auf dem lezten Album „Truth In Between“ der Fall (Review), das 2021 mitten in der Pandemie herauskam. Mir hatte das Album sehr gut gefallen. Auf dem neuen selbstbetitelten Album ist man weniger experimentierfreudig. Die Stärken des Albums liegen vor allem in den druckvollen dynamischen Songs, die mit viel feurigem Thrash und radikalem Speed für erbarmungslose Attacken sorgen. Die Ballade „Together Apart“ fühlt sich für mich dabei leider fehl am Platze an und der Song „Duck & Cover“ wirkt etwas sperrig und lahmt ein wenig. Dafür gibt es aber eine satte Ladung Songs, die euch volle Kanne begeistern und mitreißen werden. Besonders die feurigen Gitarrenkünste sind der Wahnsinn. Die bringen nicht nur die Saiten zum Glühen, sondern auch mein Herz. Das ist wirklich heißer Scheiss!

F.K.Ü. „The Horror And The Metal“

F.K.Ü. (FREDDY KRUEGER’S ÜNDERWEAR) kommen aus Schweden und huldigen auf ihrem Album dem Sound der 80er Jahre und auch thematisch den cineastischen Horror-Klassikern aus dieser Zeit. Die Stimme des Sängers ist recht prägnant und passt verdammt gut zu dem Sound. Es ist wirklich spannend und unterhaltsam, bei jedem Song zu überlegen, auf welchen Horrorklassiker sich F.K.Ü beziehen. Sie schlachten alles in kleine Stücke. Das gilt wohl für alle Songs des Albums, auch wenn die Band den Shredder nicht immer auf Hochtouren laufen lässt. F.K.Ü. spielen gekonnt mit Rhythmus, Tempo, Riffing und Gesang, so dass es kein monotones Horrorfest wird. Die messerscharfen Songs schlachten sich auf fiese Art und Weise durch die Horrorwelten der 80er Jahre.

JUGULATOR „Imperator Insector“

JUGULATOR sind eine Band aus Algerien und das ist ja an sich schon mal etwas besonderes, denn das Land ist ja nun nicht gerade bekannt für seine Metal-Kultur. Jedoch sind JUGULATOR ein Beispiel dafür, dass auch aus solchen Ländern richtig geile Metal-Mucke kommen kann. Und dies stellen sie mit ihrem Album JUGULATOR eindrucksvoll unter Beweis. „Jugulator“ ist übrigens auch der Titel eines Judas Priest Albums aus dem Jahr 1997.

JUGULATOR haben sich dem traditionellen Sound verschrieben und klingen dementsprechend rau und aggressiv. Die Produktion ist trocken und druckvoll abgemischt, was dem Sound sehr zu Gute kommt. Man besinnt sich auf einen direkten schnörkellosen Output, bei dem man sofort weiß, wo der Hase lang läuft. Die Songs sind gnadenlos aggressiv und lassen es richtig krachen, wobei JUGULATOR sich auch nicht scheuen den Härtegrad in extreme Bereiche eskalieren zu lassen. Die Spielzeiten der Songs sind generell überdurchschnittlich lang. Außer beim Intro läuft hier unter fünf Minuten nix und ein Song sprengt sogar die Acht-Minuten-Marke Der Grund liegt in den ausgiebigen Instrumentalparts. Die Männer toben sich hier nach Herzenslust aus. Das macht die Songs zwar nicht unbedingt eingängig, aber die Männer beherrschen ihre Instrumente und deshalb macht es einfach irre Spaß sich auf diese wilde Fahrt zu begeben.. Dabei ist es gleichgültig, ob das Tempo aggressiv hoch ist oder es in die langsamen schwerfälligen Abgründe geht. Fakt ist, dass JUGULATOR sich wirklich vieles einfallen lassen, um die Songs aufregend zu gestalten. „Imperator Insector„ wird euch den Schädel weghämmern. (Review)

EXHORDER „Defectum Omnium“

Ganze fünf Jahre Zeit haben sich Exhorder Zeit gelassen, um mit ihrem neuen Album das Jahr der Ziege auszurufen. Auf dem Vorgängeralbum war der Thrash-Sound noch leichter bzw. rockiger geprägt. Das neue Album setzte bei den alten Wurzeln an und klingt auf jeden Fall wieder härter und satter. Es wird angenehm abwechslungsreich präsentiert und alterniert dabei zwischen rasendemThrash, mitreißendem Groove und düsterem schweren Doom. Es ist ein facettenreiches Album, dass reif und professionell klingt, aber es dabei nicht an ungestümer Wildheit missen lässt. Thrash-Metal-Puristen werden sicherlich nicht alles abfeiern, aber mir persönlich gefällt das mutige Albumkonzept außerordentlich gut. (Review)

KERRY KING „From Hell I Rise“

Kerry King ist eine bekannte Größe in der Szene, denn er war Mitbegründer und Gitarrist der Kultband Slayer. Die Band löste sich aber 2019 auf und so ist er nun mit seinem Soloprojekt unterwegs. Wo Kerry King draufsteht, ist auch Kerry King drin. Die Songs versprühen haufenweise Slayer Charme und das ist ja wahrlich keine schlechte Sache. Hier gibt es druckvollen Thrash mit melodischer Schlagseite und die Gitarre heult zwischendurch gar meisterlich oder shreddert alles in Grund und Boden. Neben den gnadenlos starken Riffs gibt es hier wirklich außerordentlich tolle Momente mit der Leadgitarre. Die musikalischen Attacken werden euch nach allen Regeln der Kunst entgegengeschmettert. So was habe ich natürlich erwartet, aber überrascht war ich dann doch von so einem groovigen Song wie „Trophies Of The Tyrant“, der mit einem fetten Midtempo-Style aufschlägt. Dieser bleibt aber die Ausnahme. Slayer Fans dürfen also frohlocken, denn Kerry King ist mit einem Frontalangriff zurück auf dem Thrash-Metal-Schlachtfeld.

SUICIDAL ANGELS „Profane Prayer“

Die Griechen sind mit ihrem Album „Profane Prayer“ in meiner Gunst ziemlich weit oben gelandet, denn sie zelebrieren einen hochmelodischen Thrash Metal, der aber gleichzeitig mit einer kompromisslosen Art und Weise gesegnet ist. Auch bei SUICIDAL ANGELS darf man sich über sehr lebendige Gitarrenleads und knallharte Riffs freuen. Hier geht richtig was ab! Egal, ob das Tempo unfassbar hoch ist oder man im langsameren Tempo unterwegs ist, so verliert man nie die potente Dynamik, mit welcher sich in eure Ohren prügeln. Aber es geht auch anders. Es gibt zwei Songs, die mit einer sehr üppigen Spielzeit daherkommen und die offenbaren ein schöne Reise zwischen harmonischen Phasen und kraftvoller aggressiver Darbietung. Und dann gibt es eben auch die knallharten straighten Kracher, die einfach in eurem Kopf explodieren. Das rundum gelungene Album ist der Hammer und somit ebenfalls ein Highlight!

DARKNESS „Blood On Canvas“

DARKNKESS ist die zweite Ruhrpott-Band in dieser illustren Thrash-Metal-Runde und konnten dieses Jahr mit ihrem Album „Blood On Canvas“ die Fangemeinde völlig überzeugen und sicherlich etliche Fans dazugewinnen. Die Männer prügeln ihr Ding schnörkellos in klassischer Manier. Herrlich rau und fies knallt der Sound in die Ohren. Neben klassischen Soundkonzepten mit draufgängerischem Tempo gibt es auch mal andere Ansätze wie beispielsweise beim Song „Nights In Tumoil“, der nicht nur auf Geschwindigkeit setzt. Man spielt hier auch mit coolen Midtempo-Parts, die sich mit flotteren Passagen abwechseln, bis der Song am Ende in die Vollen geht. Insgesamt eine sehr starke Performance! Besonders gefallen haben mir die Drums und die Gitarrenarbeit. Dies zieht sich durch das gesamte Album. Eine große Überraschung dürfte wohl der achtminütige Titeltrack „Blood On Canvas“ sein. Sehr gemächlich und düster wird dieser Song mit einer Portion Doom eingeleitet, aber man muss nicht allzu lange auf den Geschwindigkeitsrausch warten. Selbstverständlich hat der Song im Verlauf einige Abwechslung zu bieten. Es wirkt aber alles stimmig und so verhält es sich mit dem gesamten Album. Hier wird klassischer Thrash einwandfrei dargeboten. Einer der Höhepunkte in diesem Jahr!

FLOTSAM AND JETSAM „I Am The Weapon“

FLOTSAM AND JETSAM geht die Energie nicht aus. Nach wie vor starten sie voll durch. „I Am The Weapon“ ist wieder ein Volltreffer und steht dem letzten Album in nichts nach. Die Songs sind wieder einmal von erlesener Qualität und es ist eine wahre Freude das Album von vorne bis hinten zu hören. Neben den druckvollen melodischen Bangern geben sich FLOTSAM AND JETSAM auch mal rockiger, was für noch mehr Abwechslung sorgt und den Spaßfaktor nach oben schraubt. Es hört sich nicht so an, als wenn FLOTSAM AND JETSAM sich auf den Ruhestand vorbereiten würden. Die Männer brennen noch vor Leidenschaft und Spaß für die Musik! Davon durfte ich mich auch in diesem Jahr bei einem Live-Gig in Bochum überzeugen. Dieses Konzert war ebenfalls ein Highlight in diesem Jahr und nicht nur deswegen, weil ich der Kultband in der kleinen Location so nah wie noch nie war. Außerdem haben sie eine geile heiße Show abgeliefert. (Konzertbericht) , sondern Möge das Feuer in ihnen noch lange heiß lodern. (album review)

Welcome to the third part of METALHEAD’s Toplist 2024. This year also has some top-class releases to offer in this area. Among them are also strong albums by bands from Germany. And here there are even two bands from the Ruhrpott area, namely DARKNESS and CORPORAL SHRED. In addition, the cult band FLOTSAM AND JETSAM is once again represented with a brilliant album. They really are still as hot as chips, even though they are one of the most experienced bands in this genre.

CORPORAL SHRED „Thrashtosterone“

Ruhrpott thrash, the first! CORPORAL SHRED from Essen are pumped full of „Thrashtosterone“. And they let it rip with a stormy joy of playing and unleash a true thrash tornado. The songs have a nice catchiness, as can be heard in the chorus of the opener „My Arena“, for example. It demands that you sing along with pure joy. Lies“ shows a very melodic side of the band. The songs are bursting with dynamic energy and you can hear the efforts to break out of the rigid, familiar song concepts, which they do quite well. And even if there is still room for improvement, „Thrashtoserone“ is a thrash metal gem this year. I’m looking forward to hear more from this band.

REZET „Rezet“

REZET is a band that likes to experiment and take different paths in their sound. At least that was the case on their last album „Truth In Between“ (review), which came out in 2021 in the middle of the pandemic. I really liked the album. The new self-titled album is less experimental. The album’s strengths lie above all in the powerful, dynamic songs, which provide merciless attacks with plenty of fiery thrash and radical speed. Unfortunately, the ballad „Together Apart“ is not my cup if tea (that was already the case on the last album) and the song „Duck & Cover“ seems a little bulky. On the other hand, there is a full load of songs that will thrash you away. The fiery guitar skills in particular are insane. They not only make the strings glow, but also my heart. This is really hot shit!

F.K.Ü. „The Horror And The Metal“

F.K.Ü. (FREDDY KRUEGER’S ÜNDERWEAR) come from Sweden and pay homage on their album to the sound of the 80′s and also thematically to the cinematic horror classics from that time. The singer’s voice is quite concise and suits the sound damn well. It’s really exciting and entertaining to think about which horror classic F.K.Ü are referring to with every song. They butcher everything into small pieces. This probably applies to all songs on the album, although the band don’t always run the shredder at full speed. F.K.Ü. play skillfully with rhythm, tempo, riffing and vocals, so that it’s not a monotonous horror fest. The razor-sharp songs slaughter their way through the horror worlds of the 80s in a nasty and mean way. Really entertaining!

JUGULATOR „Imperator Insector“

JUGULATOR are a band from Algeria and that in itself is something special, because the country is not exactly known for its metal culture. However, JUGULATOR are an example of the fact that really great metal music can also come from such countries. And they prove this impressively with their album JUGULATOR. Incidentally, „Jugulator“ is also the title of a Judas Priest album from 1997.

JUGULATOR have dedicated themselves to the traditional sound and sound accordingly rough and aggressive. The production is mixed dry and punchy, which really benefits the sound. They focus on a straightforward, no-frills output where you immediately know where the rabbit is going. The songs are mercilessly aggressive and really let it rip, whereby JUGULATOR are not afraid to escalate the degree of heaviness to extreme levels. The playing times of the songs are generally longer than average. Apart from the intro, there is nothing under five minutes and one song even breaks the eight-minute mark. The men let off steam in an impressive way. This doesn’t necessarily make the songs catchy, but the men are masters of their instruments and that’s why it’s simply great fun to go on this wild ride. It doesn’t matter whether the tempo is aggressively high or whether it goes into the slow, ponderous abysses. The fact is that JUGULATOR really come up with a lot of ideas to make the songs exciting. „Imperator Insector“ will hammer your head off. (Review)

EXHORDER „Defectum Omnium“

Exhorder have taken a whole five years to declare the year of the goat with their new album. On the previous album, the thrash sound was even lighter and rockier. The new album is based on the old roots and definitely sounds heavier and richer again. It is presented in a pleasantly varied way and alternates between raging thrash, rousing groove and dark, heavy doom. It’s a multi-faceted album that sounds mature and professional, but doesn’t lack any impetuous wildness. Thrash metal purists will certainly not celebrate everything, but I personally like the varied album concept extremely well. (Review)

KERRY KING „From Hell I Rise“

Kerry King is an extremely well-known artist in the scene, as he was co-founder and guitarist of the cult band Slayer. However, the band broke up in 2019 and he is now on the road with his solo project. Where Kerry King is on the label, you know what you get. The songs exude heaps of Slayer charm and that’s not a bad thing. There’s powerful thrash with a melodic edge and the guitar howls masterfully from time to time or shreds everything to the ground. In addition to the mercilessly strong riffs, there are really extraordinarily great moments with the lead guitar. The musical attacks are smashed at you with every trick in the book. Of course I expected something like this, but I was surprised by a groovy song like „Trophies Of The Tyrant“, which hits with a fat mid-tempo style. But this remains the exception. So Slayer fans can rejoice, because Kerry King is back on the thrash metal battlefield with a frontal hellish assault.

SUICIDAL ANGELS „Profane Prayer“

The Greeks have landed pretty high up in my favor with their album „Profane Prayer“, because they celebrate a highly melodic thrash metal that is at the same time blessed with an uncompromising style. With SUICIDAL ANGELS you can also look forward to very lively guitar leads and hard-hitting riffs. Things really get going here! Regardless of whether the tempo is incredibly high or you’re traveling at a slower pace, they never lose the potent dynamics with which the songs beat their way into your ears. But there is more. There are two songs with a very generous playing time and they reveal a beautiful journey between harmonious phases and powerful, aggressive performances. And then there are also the hard-hitting straight bangers that simply explode in your head. The all-round successful album is awesome and therefore also a true highlight!

DARKNESS „Blood On Canvas“

DARKNKESS is the second Ruhrpott band in this illustrious thrash metal line-up and was able to completely win over the fan community this year with their album „Blood On Canvas“ and certainly gain quite a few new fans. The men do their thing without frills in classic style. The sound is wonderfully raw and nasty. In addition to classic sound concepts with a swashbuckling tempo, there are also other approaches, such as the song „Nights In Tumoil“, which doesn’t just focus on speed. They also play with cool mid-tempo parts that alternate with faster passages until the song goes into full swing at the end. All in all, a very strong performance! I particularly liked the drums and the guitar work. This runs through the entire album. The eight-minute title track „Blood On Canvas“ is probably a big surprise. This song is introduced very leisurely and gloomily with a dose of doom, but you don’t have to wait too long for the speed rush. Of course, the song has some variety to offer as it progresses. But it all seems coherent and so does the whole album. Classic thrash is performed flawlessly here. One of the great highlights of this year!

FLOTSAM AND JETSAM „I Am The Weapon“

FLOTSAM AND JETSAM never run out of energy. They are still going full steam ahead. „I Am The Weapon“ is another direct hit and is in no way inferior to the last album. The songs are once again of exquisite quality and it is a real pleasure to listen to the album from start to finish. In addition to the powerful melodic bangers, FLOTSAM AND JETSAM also rock out, which provides even more variety and increases the fun factor. It doesn’t sound as if FLOTSAM AND JETSAM are preparing for retirement. The men are still burning with passion and fun for the music! I was able to see this for myself again this year at a live gig in Bochum. This concert was also a highlight of the year and not just because I was closer than ever to the cult band in the small venue (review). They deliveres us a hot show there. May their fire burn on for a long time. (album review)

Ein Monster-Insektoid, welches einen abgetrennten Menschenkopf zur Schau stellt. Nicht sehr einfallsreich, aber doch sehr passend, denn es geht um folgende fiktive Geschichte:

Nach dem Nukleus hat der radioaktive Abfall der Atombomben Abscheulichkeiten hervorgebracht, abscheuliche Kreaturen, die entschlossen sind, uns für alles bezahlen zu lassen, was wir ihnen und dem Planeten angetan haben … Diese Kreaturen waren in der Vergangenheit einfache Insekten, die unsere Handlungen beobachteten, ohne etwas zu sagen, und wenn sie uns störten, zerquetschten wir sie, besprühten sie mit giftiger chemischer Luft, die sie am Atmen hinderte und sie ersticken und in schrecklichem Leid sterben ließ …

Nach dem Kontakt mit dem radioaktiven Abfall, den wir verursacht haben, sind sie größer, intelligenter, stärker und widerstandsfähiger geworden, ihre Haut ist hart wie Stahl, ihre Zangen sind wie Schwerter, und sie haben beschlossen, sich an uns zu rächen, uns zu massakrieren, bei uns einzumarschieren und uns von unserer Vorherrschaft auf diesem Planeten zu befreien, und das alles unter der Führung ihres Anführers, ihres Kriegsherrn, auf den sie all ihre Hoffnungen gesetzt haben, er ist ihr Retter, ihr Auserwählter der Prophezeiung, der IMPERATOR INSECTOR!

JUGULATOR

Das eigentliche Album umfasst acht Songs, wobei das gesamte Set noch einmal auf einer Bonus Disc mit Gastmusikern aus der lokalen Szene Algeriens noch einmal aufgenommen wurde. Die Spielzeiten der Songs sind generell überdurchschnittlich lang. Außer beim Intro läuft hier unter fünf Minuten nix und ein Song sprengt sogar die Acht-Minuten-Marke Der Grund liegt in den ausgiebigen Instrumentalparts. Die Männer toben sich hier nach Herzenslust aus. Fakt ist, dass JUGULATOR sich wirklich vieles einfallen lassen, um die Songs aufregend zu gestalten.

Harter Stoff

Der Opener „Infected Focus“ haut direkt volle Kanone rein. Was mir sofort auffällt, ist der krasse Bass, der hier für mächtige Schwingungen sorgt. Die Riffs sind messerscharf und die Drums perfektionieren den äußerst dynamischen Sound. Entsprechend der rauen Instrumentierung shoutet sich Sänger souverän durch die Songs und verdunkelt den Sound sogar mit extremeren Vocals. Apropos extrem! JUGULATOR toben sich gerne in extremeren Gefilden aus. Ihr Sound hat Einflüsse aus dem Death und sogar Black Metal. Es fliegen euch auch mal Blastbeats um die Ohren und es stürmen wilde schnelle Gitarrenleads durch den Song. Dagegen klingen die Gitarrensolos oft eher fetzig rockig. Dies trifft auch auf den Song „Radioactive Mutation“ zu.

Extreme Ausflüge

Der Titelsong „Imperator Insector“ ist ein gutes Beispiel dafür für die extremen Einflüsse beim Sound. Der Song wird doomig eröffnet. Die Riffs sägen schwer, doch dann drücken JUGULATOR aufs Gaspedal und ziehen auf die Überholspur. Die Leadgitarre lässt immer wieder ein paar melodische Akkorde einfließen. Die zweite Hälfte des Songs ist ein echt abgefahrener Instrumentalpart, der ab Minute 04:20 den Nachbrenner zündet. Es wird ein super geiles Gitarrensolo abgefeuert. Anschließend wird es noch krasser und der Song bekommt für eine gewisse Zeit starke Black Metal Vibes. Totale Eskalation!

„Order The Invasion“ holt mich nicht ganz so dolle ab. Da geht mir zu wenig ab. Dafür knallt „Bleeding Earth“ wieder voll durch und reißt mich völlig mit. Dabei ist es ziemlich cool, als der Song das Tempo immer weiter reduziert. Das ist sehr gut umgesetzt worden und hört sich super an. So kann man Luft holen, um am Ende noch mal Vollgas zu geben. Nun komme ich zu dem Acht-Minuten-Brecher „From The Underground“. Ein sehr stürmischer Song, der aber gerne mit dem Tempo spielt und tatsächlich auch eingängige Phasen zu bieten hat, wobei mir der Gesang bei diesem Track besonders gut gefällt, der hier mehr melodische Akzente setzt. Der atmosphärische Mittelteil mit dem Solo ist genial geworden. Später bekommt der Song sogar noch einen speziellen folkischen Touch mit orientalischen Darbuka Percussions (ab Minute 05:50). Die Gitarrensolos sind wie immer megastark. Aber ich hätte mir hier noch mal gewünscht, dass man zum Ende noch einmal das musikalische Thema mit dem Gesang von der ersten Hälfte des Songs aufgreift.

Fazit

JUGULATOR bieten knallharten old school Thrash Metal, der es gewaltig in sich hat. Die Songs sind gnadenlos aggressiv und lassen es richtig krachen, wobei JUGULATOR sich auch nicht scheuen den Härtegrad in extreme Bereiche eskalieren zu lassen. Technisch bewegt man sich auf hohem Niveau und es macht Spaß sich von den vielen kreativen Angriffen bzw. Eskapaden mitreißen zu lassen. „Imperator Insector„ wird euch den Schädel weghämmern.

JUGULATOR (Facebook) are a band from Algeria and that in itself is something special, as the country is not well known for its big metal szene. However, JUGULATOR are an example of the fact that really great metal music can also come from such countries. And they prove this impressively with their album JUGULATOR. „Jugulator“ is by the way also the title of a Judas Priest album from 1997.

JUGULATOR have dedicated themselves to the traditional sound of 80’s and 90’s thrash metal and sound accordingly rough and aggressive. The production is mixed dry and punchy, which really benefits the sound. The focus is on a direct, no-frills output, where you immediately know where the rabbit is going. The cool old school cover artwork also evokes these associations. A monster insectoid displaying a severed human head. Not very imaginative, but very fitting.

After the Nuclearus, the radioactive waste from nuclear bombs gave birth to abominations, repugnant creatures who are determined to make us pay for everything we did to them, and everything we did to the planet …These creatures were simple insects in the past, watching our actions without saying anything, and if they disturbed us, we crushed them, we sprayed them with toxic chemical air which prevented them from breathing and made them suffocate, and die in terrible suffering …

After their contact with this radioactive waste caused by our fault, they became bigger, more intelligent, stronger and more resistant, their skin is as hard as steel, their pliers are like swords, and decided to take their revenge on us, to massacre us, to invade us and to remove us from our domination on this planet, and all this guided by their leader, their warlord, the one on whom they placed all their hopes , he is their savior, their chosen one of prophecy the IMPERATOR INSECTOR !

JUGULATOR

The actual album comprises eight songs, with the entire set being re-recorded on a bonus disc with guest musicians from the local Algerian scene. The playing times of the songs are generally longer than average. Apart from the intro, nothing runs under five minutes and one song even breaks the eight-minute mark. The reason lies in the extensive instrumental parts in which the men let off steam. This doesn’t necessarily make the songs catchy, but the men are masters of their instruments and that’s why it’s simply great fun to go on this wild ride. It doesn’t matter whether the tempo is aggressively high or whether it goes into the slow, ponderous abysses. The fact is that JUGULATOR really come up with a lot of ideas to make the songs exciting.

Hard stuff

The opener „Infected Focus“ hits the ground running. What strikes me immediately is the blatant bass, which creates powerful vibrations. The riffs are razor-sharp and the drums perfect the extremely dynamic sound. In keeping with the raw instrumentation, the singer shouts his way through the songs with confidence and even darkens the sound with some more extreme vocals. Speaking of extreme! JUGULATOR like to let off steam in more extreme realms. Their sound has influences from death and even black metal. Blast beats fly around your ears and wild, fast guitar leads storm through the song. In contrast, the guitar solos often sound rather groovy and rocky. This also applies to the song „Radioactive Mutation“.

Extreme excursions

The title track „Imperator Insector“ is a good example of the extreme influences on the sound. The song opens doomily. The riffs saw heavily, but then JUGULATOR hit the accelerator and pull into the fast lane. The lead guitar keeps adding some nice melodic chords. The second half of the song is a really wicked instrumental part that ignites the afterburner at 04:20. A super cool guitar solo is fired off. Then it gets even more blatant and the song takes on strong black metal vibes for a while. Total escalation!

„Order The Invasion“ doesn’t quite grab me as much. There’s not enough going on for me. On the other hand, „Bleeding Earth“ hits the ground running again and sweeps me off my feet. It’s pretty cool when the song keeps reducing the tempo. It’s very well realised and sounds great. It allows you to catch your breath and then go full throttle again at the end. Now I come to the eight-minute breaker „From The Underground“. A very stormy song, but one that likes to play with the tempo and actually has catchy phases to offer, whereby I particularly like the vocals on this track, which set more melodic accents here. The atmospheric middle section with the solo is brilliant. Later on, the song even gets a special folk touch with oriental darbuka percussions (from minute 05:50). The guitar solos are mega-strong as always. But I would have liked the musical theme with the vocals from the first half of the song to be picked up again at the end.

Conclusion

JUGULATOR offer hard-hitting old school thrash metal that packs a punch. The songs are mercilessly aggressive and really let it rip, whereby JUGULATOR are not afraid to escalate the degree of heaviness to extreme levels. The technical level is high and it’s fun to be blown away by the many creative attacks and escapades. „Imperator Insector„ hammers your head off.
