METALHEADs Toplist 2023 – Progressive Metal mit NE OBLIVISCARIS, VINTERSEA, WINTERHORDE, LUNAR und MARQUIS DE SADE. Das schwierige an diesem Genre ist, dass es progressive Strukturen in jedem musikalischen Bereich gibt. Von Rockmusik bis hin zu extremen Metal gibt es Bands, die komplexe Songstrukturen erschaffen. Somit habe ich auch in diese Liste ganz unterschiedlich orientierte Bands, wobei an der Spitze tatsächlich eine Band steht, die in dieser Liste einen Ausnahmestatus hat, weil sie am wenigsten „extrem“ ist. Abgesehen davon ist es jede einzelne Band in dieser Liste wert, sich mit ihr zu beschäftigen.

NE OBLIVISCARIS

NE OBLIVISCARIS (Facebook) aus Australien haben am 24.03.2023 ihr Album „Exul“ veröffentlicht. Der Bandname bedeutet übrigens „Nicht Vergessen“. 

Beim Opener „Equus“ sind mir unter anderem zwei Dinge aufgefallen. Das feine melodische Bassspiel mit seinen anspruchsvollen Akkorden ist schon eine Kunst für sich. Ein weiteres sehr prägendes Merkmal offenbart sich in dem bezaubernden Violinenspiel, dass durchaus als besonders bezeichnet werden muss, indem es für mich eine sehr individuelle Note ausstrahlt. Solche Töne habe ich teilweise in dieser Form und Darbietung noch nirgends gehört. Es unterstreicht den Sound wunderbar, aber setzt auch teilweise extravagante Akzente. Dies kann man besonders auch im Song „Anatomy of Quiescence“ bewundern. Ein zu Beginn sehr ruhiger Song, der sich allmählich in der Intensität steigert, wobei auch ein überirdisches Gitarrensolo erklingt. (Review)

VINTERSEA

Bei der amerikanischen Band VINTERSEA (Facebook) geht es extrem zur Sache. Das aktuelle Album von VINTERSEA heißt „Woven Into Ashes“.

Sängerin Avienne zeigt hier einen unglaubliche Energie in ihrem extremen Vocals und beweist, dass extreme Vocals auch variabel stattfinden können. Hohe krasse Screams und abgrundtiefe Growls schaffen eine verdammt bedrohliche Atmosphäre. Doch ebenso in den cleanen Gesangspassagen weiß sie mit erstklassiger Güte zu überzeugen. Es ist sehr beeindruckend wie Avienne scheinbar wie selbstverständlich die Vocals switchen kann als wäre es das Normalste der Welt. Als prägnantes Beispiel führe ich den Song „Parallel Duality“ an, welcher beginnt mit balladesken doomigen Zügen beginnt, sich aber dann ganz langsam mit unheilvollen Ankündigungen in ein dunkles unheimliches Biest verwandelt.

VINTERSEA spielen sich mit „Woven Into Ashes“ auf das nächste Level, wobei man sagen muss, dass es kaum noch höher gehen kann. Sängerin Avienne ist absolute Spitzenklasse. Besser kann man es nicht machen! Und ihre Mitstreiter beherrschen die musikalische Kunst an den Instrumenten nicht weniger eindrucksvoll. „Woven Into Ashes“ ist ein durch und durch imponierendes Schauspiel geworden. Extremer Metal mit einem hohen technischen Anspruch und vielfältiger emotionaler Ausprägung.

„Lonesome Tide“

WINTERHORDE

Hier haben wir eine der genialen Bands, die das Label ‚Noble Demon‘ betreut. Das Label legt Wert auf Bands, die sich abseits des Mainstreams auf eine individuelle Art und Weise entfalten und sich dadurch deutlich von der Masse abheben. WINTERHORDE gehören sicherlich dazu. Und mit dem neuen Album „Neptunian“ zeigen sie eine eindrucksvolle musikalische Kunst.

Es werden mit unterschiedlichen Pinseln und Farben fantastische epische Szenarien erschaffen, die in einem musikalischen Gemälde vereinigt werden. Ein Gemälde, dass voller Details steckt, die entdeckt werden wollen. Es ist Musik, die nicht immer sehr eingängig wirkt, aber ein aufmerksames Zuhören reich belohnt. 

Ich möchte hier in dieser Toplist nicht zu weit ausschweifen (komplettes Review hier) und daher hier nur auf den Song „The Spirit Of Freedom“ kurz eingehen. Es ist ein sehr emotionaler Song über Tragik und Verlust, der mit einem beeindrucken Video noch mehr an Intensität verliehen bekommen hat. Der Song spielt mit Elementen des melodischen Death und Black Metal. Der epische ergreifende Refrain ist eine wahre Offenbarung. Ein wahrlich ergreifender Song. „The Spirit Of Freedom“

LUNAR

LUNAR (Facebook) sind bereits für ihre vorherigen Werke „Theogony“ und „Eidolon“ von der Fachpresse abgefeiert worden. Ursprünglich wurdes es von den beiden Freunden Alex Bosson (drums/percussion) und Ryan Erwin (guitar/vocals) gegründet, um sich von musikalischen Fesseln zu befreien und Songs zu schreiben, die keine Grenzen kennen.

Der Titelsong „The Illusionist“ eine satte Spielzeit von 10 Minuten. Es beginnt melancholisch zurückhaltend. Der Song verliert dann langsam seine Melancholie und wird eher zu einem kraftvollen wütenden Song. Es kämpfen sich massive Riffs hervor, die Leadgitarre zeigt sich mit wilden Spielereien und der Gesang wird kerniger. Ab der Hälfte des Songs zaubern sich ruhig instrumentierte Phasen mit klassischen Instrumenten wie Klavier und Saxophon rein. Doch zwischendurch brechen bei heftigen Explosionen alle Dämme. Ein Song voller extremer Gegensätze! Und genau das macht das Album aus! Sicherlich keine einfache Kost, aber genial gemacht.

LUNAR zeigen mit „The Illusionist“ eine beeindruckende Show. Im Gegensatz zum Albumtitel gibt es allerdings keine Illusionen, sonder ganz reale musikalische Kunst. Dabei zaubern LUNAR allerlei aus dem Hut. Ihr Zauber besteht aus einer Sammlung von hochwertigen facettenreichen Songs. Dabei beschreitet man hauptsächlich harte Weg. Doch viele feine Passagen, die mit klassischen Instrumenten aller Art veredelt werden, sorgen für tolle gegensätzlich bzw. grenzenlose Erlebnisse. (Review)

Doch schon kurze Zeit später schloss sich Pete Gordelier (Bassist der Band) im Jahr 1982 ANGEL WITCH an und Sänger Chris Gordelier sprach als Ersatz für Bruce Dickinson bei SAMSON vor. Somit war die Flamme von MARQUIS DE SADE erloschen bevor sie überhaupt richtig brennen konnte. Doch 40 Jahre später kann die Band 2022 eine Wiedergeburt feiern, sozusagen das zweite Kapitel. Drei Gründungsmitglieder sind mit von der Partie und nun ist 2023 das Album „Chapter II“ geboren worden.

Die Musik vereint den Geist des klassischen traditionellen Metal mit Elementen aus Prog, Doom und Hardrock. Diese Vereinigung verschiedener Elemente ist für mich die progressive Offenbarung des Jahres 2023 mit einer hochklassigen Darbietung an jeder Position. Mit viel Liebe zum Detail lassen die aufwendig komponieren Songs eine wunderbare musikalische Welt entstehen, in die man nur allzu gerne eintaucht. MARQUIS DE SADE sind mit ihrem Album „Chapter II“ für mich ein absoluter Überraschungshit. Die Songs sind musikalische Delikatessen, die mit erlesensten Zutaten komponiert wurden. Die Musiker harmonieren so fantastisch miteinander, dass es eine pure Freude ist diesem Album zu lauschen. Es ist ein fesselnd und faszinierend, was letztlich auch an dem tollen Songwriting liegt. Denn dieses entfaltet eine unglaubliche Vielfalt an Eindrücken, die es vermögen den Hörer jederzeit zu begeistern und zu überwältigen. Großartig! Für Fans dieser Musik ist es ein wahres Fest.

The difficult thing about this genre is that there are progressive structures in every musical genre. From Rock music to extreme Metal, there are bands that create complex song structures. So I’ve also included bands with very different orientations in this list, with one band at the top that actually has an exceptional status in this list because it is the least „extreme“ of all. Apart from that, every single band on this list is worth checking out.

NE OBLIVISCARIS

NE OBLIVISCARIS (Facebook) from Australia released their album „Exul. Incidentally, the band name means „not forgotten“.

There were two things that struck me about the opener „Equus“. The fine melodic bass playing with its sophisticated chords is an art in itself. Another very distinctive feature is revealed in the beautiful violin playing, which must definitely be described as special, as it radiates a very individual note for me. I have never heard such sounds in this form and performance anywhere else. It underlines the sound wonderfully, but also sets some extravagant accents. This can be particularly admired in the song „Anatomy of Quiescence“. A very quiet song at the beginning, which gradually increases in intensity, including an extraordinary guitar solo. (Review)

VINTERSEA

The American band VINTERSEA (Facebook) is extremely hard-hitting. VINTERSEA’s new album is called „Woven Into Ashes“.

Singer Avienne shows an incredible energy in her extreme vocals and proves that extreme vocals can also be variable. Screams and abysmal growls create a damn threatening atmosphere. But she also knows how to convince in the clean vocal passages. It is very impressive how Avienne can seemingly switch vocals as if it were the most normal thing in the world. A striking example is the song „Parallel Duality“, which begins with balladesque doomy traits, but then slowly transforms into a dark and sinister beast with ominous announcements.

VINTERSEA play their way to the next level with „Woven Into Ashes“, and it has to be said that it can hardly get any higher. Singer Avienne is absolutely top class. You can’t do better than that! And her fellow musicians have mastered the musical art of the instruments no less impressively. „Woven Into Ashes“ has become a thoroughly impressive spectacle. Extreme metal with a high technical standard and diverse emotional expression.

„Lonesome Tide“

WINTERHORDE

Here we have one of the brilliant bands that the label ‚Noble Demon‘ supports. The label attaches great importance to bands that develop in an individual way away from the mainstream and thus clearly stand out from the crowd. WINTERHORDE (Facebook) are certainly one of them. And with their new album „Neptunian“, they demonstrate impressive musical artistry.

Fantastic epic scenarios are created with different brushes and colors, which are united in a musical painting. A painting that is full of details that want to be discovered. It is music that is not always very catchy, but attentive listening is richly rewarded.

I don’t want to go too far afield in this top list (full review here) and will therefore only briefly mention the song „The Spirit Of Freedom“ here. It’s a very emotional song about tragedy and loss, which has been given even more intensity with an impressive video. The song plays with elements of melodic death and black metal. The epic poignant chorus is a true revelation. A truly moving song. Watch the intense video below.

„The Spirit Of Freedom“

LUNAR

LUNAR (Facebook) have already received critical acclaim for their previous works „Theogony“ and „Eidolon“. It was originally founded by two friends, Alex Bosson (drums/percussion) and Ryan Erwin (guitar/vocals), to free themselves from musical shackles and write songs that know no boundaries.

The title track „The Illusionist“ has a whopping playing time of 10 minutes. It begins melancholically reserved. The song then slowly loses its melancholy and becomes more of a powerful, angry song. Massive riffs emerge, the lead guitar shows itself with wild gimmicks and the vocals become grittier. From halfway through the song, calmly orchestrated phases with classical instruments such as piano and saxophone conjure themselves up. But in between, all the dams break with violent explosions. A song full of extreme contrasts! And that’s exactly what makes the album! Certainly not easy listening, but brilliantly done.

LUNAR put on an impressive show with „The Illusionist“. Contrary to the album title, however, there are no illusions, but very real musical art. LUNAR conjure all kinds of surprises out of their hat. Their magic consists of a collection of high-quality, multi-faceted songs. They mainly tread the hard path. But many fine passages, which are partly refined with classical instruments of all kinds, provide boundless experiences.(Review)

MARQUIS DE SADE(Facebook) was founded in London around 1979/1980. It was during the heyday of the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM). But a short time later, Pete Gordelier (the band’s bassist) joined ANGEL WITCH in 1982 and singer Chris Gordelier auditioned to replace Bruce Dickinson at SAMSON. Thus the flame of MARQUIS DE SADE was extinguished before it could really burn. But 40 years later, the band can celebrate a rebirth in 2022, the second chapter, so to speak. And now the album „Chapter II“ has been born in 2023.

The music combines the spirit of classic traditional Metal with elements of Prog, Doom and Hardrock. For me, this fusion of different elements is the progressive revelation of 2023 with a top-class performance at every position. With great attention to detail, the intricately composed songs create a wonderful musical world that you are only too happy to immerse yourself in. MARQUIS DE SADE are an absolute surprise hit for me with their album „Chapter II“. The songs are musical delicacies composed with exquisite ingredients. The musicians harmonize so fantastically with each other that it is a pure joy to listen to this album. It is captivating and fascinating, which is ultimately also due to the great songwriting. It unfolds an incredible variety of impressions that are able to inspire and overwhelm the listener at all times. Great! It’s a real feast for fans of this music.

Die haben richtig Bock

Die Songs klingen mit ihren klassischen Zutaten old school, aber trotzdem knusprig und knackig wie frisch gebackenes Brot aus dem Ofen. Und das schmeckt vorzüglich. Es klingt auf keinen Fall nach einem Projekt, dass man mal eben aus der Hüfte geschossen hat. Dafür ist die Qualität der Musik viel zu gut. Die Songs machen einen sehr ambitionierten Eindruck. Man hat das Gefühl, dass sich die Männer unbedingt beweisen wollten, dass sie es noch draufhaben. Und das haben sie!

Der Opener „Belvedere“

überzeugt direkt mit einer authentischen Atmosphäre. Viele Details prägen den Sound. Der Sound wird mit sehr viel Liebe zum Detail präsentiert. Man weiß gar nicht, wohin man zuerst hören soll. Der Charme des Albums offenbart sich bereits beim ersten Hören, aber die komplette wunderbare Vielfalt erschließt sich erst bei mehreren Durchläufen. Das ist hochklassige Arbeit an jeder Position. Die Produktion ist passend zur Musik nicht zu sehr aufgeblasen, sondern klingt authentisch und trotzdem knackig. Das Album wurde für jeweils für CD und Vinyl individuell abgemischt. (Ich habe mir eine Vinyl bestellt, frage mich aber, wie man 60 Minuten Musik auf einer Scheibe unterbringen kann.)

Update Vinyl vom 02.08.2023

Heute ist mein Packet angekommen. Und nun ist meine oben gestellte Frage auch beantwortet. Es ist nicht nur eine Vinyl, sondern das Paket besteht zwei Vinyls. Die beiden Songs „Last Survivor“ und „Living In The Ice Age“ sind auf eine Extra-Vinyl gepresst worden. Man bekommt dazu noch eine hochwertige Gatefold-Hülle und natürlich noch ein Faltblatt mit den Songtexten und anderen Infos. Dazu ist der Sound auf den Vinyls erstklassig! Und all das bekommt man für nur 22,00 Euro! Das ist der Hammer! Vor allem, wenn man sich mal auf dem Markt umschaut und feststellt, was andere Bands und Labels für eine Doppelvinyl verlangen.

Handwerklich hervorragend

Der Gesang von Kriss Gordelier hat viel Gefühl und Power und wirkt vielschichtig. Ein Profi mit viel Erfahrung. Das hört man! Die Instrumente sind sehr verspielt, aber nicht konzeptlos. Ganz im Gegenteil. Die Songs halten mit vielen ideenreichen Wendungen und Höhepunkten die Spannung aufrecht. Jedes Instrument bekommt seinen Raum im Song, um sich zu entfalten und dem Songkonzept zu dienen. Auch wenn alle einen super Job machen, so möchte ich das Gitarrenspiel von Pauly Gordelier und vor allem die Künste von Giles ‘Doc’ Holland am Keybord besonders lobend erwähnen. Denn diese sorgen für viele fantastische Höhepunkte auf dem Album.

Die geilen Riffs vom zweiten Song „Now I Lay Me Down“ haben mich sofort gepackt. Entgegen dem Songtitel legt sich hier keiner hin. Ganz im Gegenteil! Der Song gibt ordentlich Gas und ist ein Rocker vor dem Herrn. Die Gitarrenarbeit von Pauly Gordelier ist phänomenal und brilliert mit fantastischen Solos. Aber auch Giles ‘Doc’ Holland am Keybord liefert eine unglaubliche Show. Er sorgt ebenfalls auf dem gesamten Album für ganz spezielle Momente und hat einen großen Teil an dem einmaligen Sound von MARQUIS DE SADE. Zieht Euch einfach mal das Solo bei „Now I Lay Me Down“ rein. Das ist der Wahnsinn. Da fällt Euch die Kinnlade runter! Und ich liebe einfach das Zusammenwirken von Gitarren- und Keybordsolos.

Große Momente

finden sich genügend bei MARQUIS DE SADE. Die Band versteht sich aufwendige und atmosphärisch dichte Kompositionen zu erschaffen. Exemplarisch sei hier der Song „Last Survivor“ genannt. Ein epischer Track mit einer unglaublich fesselnden Atmosphäre, die düster melancholisch, aber auch ein wenig geheimnisvoll daherkommt. Bei mir kommen dabei auch alte Deep Purple Gefühle hoch. Und man höre sich diese starken Bassläufe von Pete Gordelier an. Darüber hinaus gibt es auch hier wieder ein traumhafte Vereinigung von genialen Gitarrenklängen und irren Keybordsounds. Unglaublich, was Giles ‘Doc’ Holland hier für Töne hervorzaubert.

Man kann die Musik eindeutig als progressiv bezeichnen,

denn die Songs sind wirklich komplex aufgebaut und bedienen sich vieler unterschiedlicher Elemente und Stile. So musste ich auch über die Entwicklung beim Song „Border Wall“ staunen, der sich zunächst wie eine klassische ruhige Ballade in meine Ohren schmeichelte. Doch plötzlich entwickelt sich eine starke doomige Dynamik und glänzt mit einer unerwarteten Heaviness. Doch Achtung! Auch diese wird von einem zarten Pianosolo unterbrochen, um dann wieder in einem genialen Übergang mit fetzigem Gitarrensolo in den heavigen dynamischen Teil überzugehen. Ganz großes Kino!

„The Moons Glow“ täuscht ebenfalls eine bedächtige Erholungsphase zu Beginn an und brennt dann doch unvermittelt drauflos und entfacht ein richtiges Feuer. „Suspended Animation“ überwältigt mich mit seiner überirdischen Epik. Ich kann es kaum in Worte fassen, wie imposant diese Musik sich entfaltet. Es ist schlichtweg traumhaft, was hier geboten wird. Den Titeltrack „Marquis De Sade“ möchte ich nicht außen vorlassen. Auch hier lässt die Band ihre musikalischen Muskeln spielen und zeigen eindrucksvoll, was für eine Energie sie freisetzen können.

Am Ende zündet die Band mit „Living In The Ice Age“ noch mal ein riesiges Feuerwerk. Satte neun Minuten lang geht es noch mal richtig zur Sache. Viel Power und Groove mit genialen sphärischen Zwischenspielen und anderen coolen Ideen sorgen noch einmal für beste Unterhaltung.

Fazit

MARQUIS DE SADE sind mit ihrem Album „Chapter II“ für mich ein absoluter Überraschungshit. Die Songs sind musikalische Delikatessen, die mit erlesensten Zutaten komponiert wurden. Jeder Musiker von MARQUIS DE SADE ist unüberhörbar ein absoluter Profi. Aber das ist es nicht allein. Sie harmonieren so fantastisch miteinander, dass es eine pure Freude ist diesem Album zu lauschen. Es ist ein fesselndes und faszinierendes Album, was letztlich auch an dem tollen Songwriting liegt. Denn dieses entfaltet eine unglaubliche Vielfalt an Eindrücken, die es vermögen den Hörer jederzeit zu begeistern und zu überwältigen. Großartig! Für Fans dieser Musik ist es ein wahres Fest.

On July 28 MARQUIS DE SADE released „Chapter II“. It is virtually the first album of the band in 40 years. The music combines the spirit of classic traditional metal with elements of prog, doom and hard rock.

They are really up to it

The songs sound old school with their classic ingredients, but still crispy and crunchy like freshly baked bread from the oven. And that tastes exquisite. It definitely doesn’t sound like a project that you just did on the side out of boredom. The quality of the music is much too good for that. The songs make a very ambitious impression. You get the feeling that the men really wanted to prove to themselves that they still have it in them. And they have!

The opener „Belvedere“

convinces directly with an authentic atmosphere. Many details characterize the sound. The sound is presented with a lot of attention to detail. You don’t even know where to listen first. The charm of the album reveals itself already at the first listen, but the complete wonderful variety opens up only with several runs. The production is fitting to the music not too bloated, but sounds authentic and still crisp. It was mixed individually for CD and vinyl. (I ordered a vinyl, but wonder how they can fit 60 minutes of music on one disc).

Today my package arrived. And now my question above is also answered. It is not only one vinyl, but the package consists of two vinyls. The two songs „Last Survivor“ and „Living In The Ice Age“ have been pressed on an extra vinyl. You also get a high quality gatefold sleeve and of course a leaflet with the lyrics and other info. In addition the sound on the vinyls is first class! And all this you get for only 22,00 Euro! That’s awesome! Especially if you look around on the market and see what other bands and labels charge for a double vinyl.

Excellent craftsmanship

Kriss Gordelier’s vocals have a lot of feeling and power and seem multi-layered. A professional with a lot of experience. You can hear that! The instruments are very playful, but not conceptless. Quite the opposite. The songs keep up the tension with many imaginative turns and climaxes. Each instrument gets its space in the song to unfold and serve the song concept. Even though everyone does a great job, I would like to give special praise to the guitar playing of Pauly Gordelier and especially the arts of Giles ‚Doc‘ Holland on keyboards. Because these provide for many fantastic highlights on the album.

The great riffs of the second song „Now I Lay Me Down“ grabbed me immediately. Contrary to the song title, nobody lays down here. Quite the opposite! The song gives proper gas and is a sharp speedy rocker. The guitar work of Pauly Gordelier is phenomenal and shines with fantastic solos. But also Giles ‚Doc‘ Holland on keyboards delivers an incredible show. He also provides very special moments throughout the album and has a big part in the unique sound of MARQUIS DE SADE. Just check out the solo on „Now I Lay Me Down“. It’s insane. It will make your jaw drop! And I just love the interaction of guitar and keyboard solos.

Great moments

can be found many at MARQUIS DE SADE. The band knows how to create elaborate and atmospherically dense compositions. Exemplary is the song „Last Survivor“. An epic track with an incredibly captivating atmosphere, which comes along darkly melancholic, but also a little mysterious. In me old Deep Purple feelings come up. And listen to those strong bass runs by Pete Gordelier. In addition, there is again a dreamlike union of ingenious guitar sounds and crazy keyboard sounds. Unbelievable what Giles ‚Doc‘ Holland conjures up here.

The music can be clearly described as progressive,

because the songs are created complex and use many different elements and styles. So I had to admire the development of the song „Border Wall“, which at first flattered my ears like a classic quiet ballad. But suddenly a strong doomy dynamic develops and shines with an unexpected heaviness. But beware. This is also interrupted by a delicate piano solo, to then again go into the heavy dynamic part in a brilliant transition with a fierce guitar solo. Outstanding!

„The Moons Glow“ also pretends a thoughtful recovery phase at the beginning and then abruptly burns on it and ignites a real fire. „Suspended Animation“ overwhelms me with its otherworldly epicness. I can hardly put it into words how imposingly this music unfolds. It is simply dreamlike, what is offered here. I would not like to leave out the title track „Marquis De Sade“. Here, too, the band flexes their musical muscles and impressively show what kind of energy they can unleash.

At the end the band ignites a huge firework with „Living In The Ice Age“. In nine minutes they are really going for it and give us a fantastic performance. A lot of power and groove with ingenious spherical interludes and other cool ideas provide once again for best entertainment.

Conclusion

MARQUIS DE SADE are an absolute surprise hit for me with their album „Chapter II“. The songs are musical delicacies composed with the choicest ingredients. Every musician of MARQUIS DE SADE is unmistakably an absolute professional. But that is not the only thing. They harmonize so fantastically with each other that it is a pure joy to listen to this album. It is a captivating and fascinating album, which is ultimately also due to the great songwriting. Because this unfolds an incredible variety of impressions, which are able to inspire and overwhelm the listener at any time. Great! For fans of this music it is a real feast.
