WINTERHORDE „Neptunian“ Review
(english review below)
Genre: (Progressive) Epic Extreme Metal
Release: 08.12.2023
Label: Noble Demon
Fazit

Genre: (Progressive) Epic Extreme Metal

Label: Noble Demon
If you’re looking for bands that don’t conform to the mainstream, but reveal a really special sound, then the Noble Demon label (Facebook/Homepage) is the right place for you. They mainly features extreme metal bands that are true gems in this genre and often cannot be pigeonholed. This year, various bands from this label have already thrilled us with fantastic releases that have not only caused excitement among us. The already very experienced band WINTERHORDE (Facebook) is certainly one of them. „Neptunian“ is the extreme metallers‘ new epic work.
A progressive core
is an essential part of the musical concept. So you shouldn’t expect WINTERHORDE to reveal their art and complexity with light-hearted fare. Even the opener „Amphibia“ stretches over a long seven minutes and the other songs are no fast food either. With „Alone In The Ocean“, WINTERHORDE even break the nine-minute mark.
But let’s hear first to the opener „Amphibia“, which is introduced with a majestic orchestral sound. I even hear trumpets that bring in an epic element. A very nice introduction and not at all extreme. But when the vocals come in, the sound takes on a darker side, with harsh and clean vocals alternating and epic choirs also making their entrance. Of course, this combination is nothing new, but it depends on how you implement this concept as a band. And WINTERHORDE do this in a creative and their own way. As a listener, you don’t even notice the long playing time. And that’s always a good sign.
Fantastic scenarios are created with different brushes and colors, which are united in a musical painting. A painting that is full of details that want to be discovered. This music is not always very catchy but rewards attentive listening. The orchestral interludes are used intelligently. Listen to the part from minute 05:37. It begins with a groovy guitar solo, followed by the orchestral part, only to let the guitar appears once more. And in the brilliant finale, the trumpets are used again, which sound really great and close the circle to the beginning of the song.
From the majestic „Amphibia“
the wild title track „Neptunia“ picks up the pace. Here you are again treated to melodic guitar and vocal lines. However, this song does not have such a symphonic appearance. But here, too, the band sets another highlight at the end with the wonderful guitar solo.
„Angels In Disguise“ is a mixture of dream and nightmare for me, because it works with strong contrasts. This also applies to the vocals, which change from nightmarishly gloomy to almost gentle, dreamy choruses. Incidentally, the vocals are enriched by guest singer Kobi Farhi from the band Orphaned Land.
The single „The Spirit Of Freedom“ can also be confidently described as a true highlight. It is a very emotional song about tragedy and loss, which has been given even more intensity with an impressive video. The song plays with elements of melodic death and black metal. The epic poignant chorus is a true revelation. A truly touching song!
Sophisticated
„Alone In The Ocean“, the longest track, is composed very symphonically and the melodic clean vocals, including sublime choirs, are used throughout. This theatricality has something of a musical about it. Overall, the track remains in this theme and extensive instrumental passages are incorporated, which also include a beautifully long, fine guitar solo. A song that is wonderful to let yourself fall into.
In „A Harvester Of Stars“, the listener is once again overwhelmed with a whole host of impressions. After a fairly restrained start with sensitive vocals, the song picks up, then slowly moves in a dramatic direction and finally becomes an excessive monster with some surprising twists and turns. The guitar playing is, as always, phenomenal.
The final „With Bare Hands Against the Storm“ shows once again that WINTERHORDE attach great importance to confronting the listener with different impressions and moods. For me, however, the song „The Spirit Of Freedom“ remains the emotionally overpowering highlight of the album despite the overall very high level.
Conclusion
WINTERHORDE embody an interesting mixture of melodic death and black metal on „Neptunia“. They embellish their music with symphonic elements, sometimes more, sometimes less and sometimes not at all. So „Neptunia“ offers a progressive, detailed sound with a lot to discover and some fantastic hymn-like passages, but which also leads into dark abysses. Instrumentally and compositionally, it is on a highly sophisticated level and it may require a little patience and attentive listening to fully appreciate this art, which is not always easy to grasp. But that is of course not the intention of this music.
