Nach dem mittlerweile zweiten epischen Interview (Link) mit der kanadischen Band OSYRON (Homepage/Facebook) folgt nun das Review für deren neues Album „Momentous“, welches am kommenden Freitag am 04.11.’22 erscheinen wird. Ehrlich gesagt war ich auf das, was sich mir offenbarte, nicht vorbereitet. Das Album hat mich in mehrfach überrascht. Überrascht hat mich allerdings nicht die Qualität der dargebotenen Musik, denn ich habe Erstklassiges erwartet und dahingehend wurde ich nicht enttäuscht.

Alte und neue Wege

OSYRON sind dafür bekannt gerne mal orchestrale Sounds in ihre Musik einzubauen. Dies hat man vor allem bei der EP Foundations gehört. Nun gehen sie noch etwas andere Wege und verpassen ihrem Sound einen Anteil authentischer Folk Musik. Genau solche Klänge bestimmen den Beginn vom Opener „Anunnaki“, die von der Band PERCIVAL SCHUTTENBACH (Facebook) stammen. Dabei handelt es sich um die Musiker Mikołaj Rybacki und Katarzyna Bromirska. Diese sind hin und wieder auf dem Album zu hören und das hört sich tatsächlich ziemlich cool an. Sie schenken der Musik eine ganz spezielle Atmosphäre.

Harmonische Härte

Nach dem folkloristischen Intro wird ein weiteres Merkmal offenbart, nämlich knackige düstere Härte. Mein lieber Scholli… Das kracht recht ordentlich. Sänger Reed lässt somit keinen Zweifel daran, dass er nicht nur wunderbar harmonisch singen kann, sondern auch eine dunkle Seite besitzt. Doch dazu später noch mehr.

„Anunnaki“ ist ein atmosphärisch dichter Song mit allem bestückt, was das Metalherz begehrt. Es gibt fettes Riffing, tolle Solos, ein sehr dynamisches Drumming und starke prägnante Basslinien. Der Sound wandelt zwischen harmonischen tragenden und druckvollen dunklen Passagen. Und dieses Konzept setzt sich in verschiedenen Formen und Ausprägungen auf dem gesamten Album fort.

Dominion Day

gab uns als erste Single bereits einen Vorgeschmack auf das, was uns OSYRON auf ihrem neuen Album bieten. Der Sound ist knackig hart und düsterer geworden. Dementsprechend martialisch beginnt der Song. Kurze Zeit später brilliert Sänger Reed Alton mit seinen fantastischen cleanen Vocals. Ist schon irre, welche sauberen hohen Töne er seiner Kehle entlocken kann. Er hat eine unheimlich emotionale Ader in jeder Hinsicht und eine wahnsinnige Kontrolle über seine Stimme. Diese zarte klare Stimme in der emotionalen Einführung des Songs im Vergleich zu den kraftvoll gesungenen Parts bis hin zur totalen bösen Eskalation sind sehr eindrucksvoll. Diese Range von Reed Alton ist außergewöhnlich und bemerkenswert. Der Gesang ist eine der vielen Künste , die OSYRON beherrschen.

Der Hammer des Wahnsinns

kreist dann mit dem Song „Landslide“. Ganz ehrlich… Beim ersten Hören dachte ich zunächst, dass sich eine andere Band in die Playlist gemogelt hätte. Denn plötzlich und ohne Vorwarnung raste ein thrashiger Melo-Death-Zug durch meine Ohren. Pure Eskalation! Von epischen Harmonien keine Spur! Das ist einfach ein K.O.-Schlag! Damit haben mich OSYRON eiskalt erwischt und fast ausgeknockt. Zwischendurch erkennt man dann wieder die Tugenden von OSYRON mit ihrem tollen Chorus, der die ganze Prügelei etwas auflockert. Aber ansonsten schießt Reed die aggressivsten Vocals aus seiner Kehle, die ich je von ihm gehört habe. Dies hat mir sehr einducksvoll aufgezeigt, zu was für „Schandtaten“ OSYRON in der Lage sind. Es gibt wohl nichts, wovor sie zurückschrecken würden oder was sie nicht spielen könnten.

Meister ihres Fachs

Neben dem fabelhaften Gesang von Reed glänzen alle Instrumentalisten der Band mit ausgezeichneten Skills. Die technischen Fähigkeiten sind auf einem sehr hohen Level und man kann nur Füllhörner voll des Lobes über sie ausschütten. So schaffen es OSYRON progressive Strukturen mit vielen Details zu erschaffen ohne den Hörer zu überfordern. Sie bewahren sich trotzdem mit großartigen Melodien und epischen Chören eine Eingängigkeit, die Euch immer wieder einfängt. Es entsteht eine atemberaubende Dynamik und man gerät immer wieder ins Staunen, was OSYRON alles in einem einzelnen Song aus dem Hut zaubern.

Es darf auch mal ruhiger werden

Manche Songs auf dem Album stehen in einem völligen Kontrast zueinander. Einerseits gibt es die harten Smasher (z.B. „Landslide“) und dann präsentieren sie fantastische gefühlvolle Balladen, die sich in einem epischen Finale ergießen wie z.B. „Sorrow And Extinction“ oder so eine bedächtige und doch faszinierende Offenbarung wie „Prairie Sailor“, bei der Reed es schafft ganz allein mit dem Zauber seiner Stimme den Hörer einzufangen.

Monumental

Und dann gibt es Songs, die von allem etwas haben und dafür steht vor allem der Titeltrack „Momentous“, bei dem nicht nur die Spielzeit von über 12 Minuten monumental ist, sondern auch seine musikalische Entfaltung. Wieder einmal geben sie Percival Schuttenbach die Ehre und leiten diesen Song über zwei Minuten mit ihrer wundervollen Folklore ein. Es folgt ein sanfter Übergang mit akustischen Gitarren, zu denen sich Reeds gefühlvoller Gesang gesellt. Der Song lässt sich wirklich Zeit und er setzt sich langsam aber sicher zu einer epischen Kunstwerk zusammen, das mit so manchen Wendungen überrascht.

Das Duell

Und es gibt noch eine Überraschung. Sänger Stu Block (Annihilator, Into Eternity) zelebriert hier zusammen mit Reed Alton eine sehr beeindruckende Gesagangsperformance beim Song „The Deafening“ Und auch hier begeistern OSYRON mit einem monumentalen Songaufbau und einer immens packenden Atmossphäre. Der noch zurückhaltende melancholische Beginn mit wundervollen Gesangslinien der beiden Sänger mit seinen eingespielten leicht bedrohlichen Stimmungen gipfelt in einem packenden gesanglichen Duell zwischen Reed und Stu mit einem radikalen Finale. Das Gitarrensolo ist super umgesetzt. Es klingt ungewöhnlich und ist mal ganz anders, was das Thema des Songs jedoch gut widerspiegelt. So wurde das Thema des inneren Kampfes mit extremen Emotionen rundum perfekt in Szene gesetzt, was man auch von dem tollen Video sagen kann.

Fazit

OSYRON überlassen nichts dem Zufall! Mit ihrem Album „Momentous“ haben OSYRON nicht nur einen großen Moment erschaffen, sondern gleich 10 davon. Die Kunstfertigkeiten der Band sind ohne jeden Zweifel auf einem sehr hohen Level, was sie in mehr als beeindruckender Art und Weise zur Schau stellen. Die Songs sind intelligent und ausgewogen arrangiert, beweisen bei den Kompositionen viel Gespür und Gefühl für Atmosphöre und Details, so dass man den unwiderstehlichen Drang verspürt immer wieder und wieder diese epische Reise mit OSYRON zu gehen.

After the meanwhile second epic interview (Link) with the Canadian band OSYRON (Homepage/Facebook) now follows the review for their new album „Momentous“, which will be released next Friday on 04.11.’22. Honestly, I was not prepared for what was revealed to me. The album surprised me in several ways. Surprised me, however, not the quality of the music presented, because I expected first-class and in this case I was not disappointed.

harmonious hardness

After the folkloristic intro another feature is revealed, namely crisp gloomy hardness. Holy shit… This cracks quite neatly. Singer Reed thus leaves no doubt that he can not only sing wonderfully harmonious, but also has a dark side. But more about that later.

„Anunnaki“ is an atmospherically dense song with everything the metal heart desires. There is fat riffing, great solos, a very dynamic drumming and strong concise bass lines. The sound changes between harmonic carrying and punchy dark passages. And this concept continues in various forms and shapes throughout the album.

Dominion Day

gave us as the first single already a foretaste of what OSYRON offer us on their new album. The sound has become crisply hard and gloomy. Accordingly, the song begins martial. A short time later singer Reed Alton shines with his fantastic clean vocals. It’s impressive what clean high tones he can elicit from his throat. He has an incredibly emotional vein in every sense and an insane control over his voice. This delicate clear voice in the emotional introduction of the song compared to the powerfully sung parts to the dark escalation are very impressive. This range of Reed Alton is exceptional and remarkable. The vocals are one of many arts that OSYRON have mastered.

The hammer of madness

swirls with the song „Landslide“. Honestly… At first hearing I thought that another band had cheated into the playlist. Because suddenly and without warning, a thrashy Melo-Death train raced through my ears. Pure escalation! No trace of epic harmonies! This is simply a knockout blow! With this OSYRON almost knocked me out. In between you can recognize the virtues of OSYRON again with their great chorus, which loosens up the whole beating a bit. But otherwise Reed shoots the most aggressive vocals out of his throat that I have ever heard from him. This showed me very impressively what kind of „outrages“ OSYRON are capable of. There is probably nothing they would shy away from or that they can’t play.

Masters of their craft

Besides Reed’s fabulous vocals, all the band’s instrumentalists shine with excellent skills. The technical skills are on a very high level and one can only pour out cornucopias full of praise about them. Thus OSYRON manage to create progressive structures with many details without overwhelming the listener. They still keep a catchiness with great melodies and epic choirs that catches you again and again. A breathtaking dynamic is created and you are always amazed at what OSYRON conjure everything out of the hat in a single song.

it can also be quieter sometimes

Some songs on the album are in complete contrast to each other. On the one hand there are the hard smashers (e.g. „Landslide“) and then they present fantastic soulful ballads that pour out in an epic finale like „Sorrow And Extinction“ or such a thoughtful yet fascinating revelation like „Prairie Sailor“, where Reed manages to capture the listener all alone with the magic of his voice.

And then there are songs that have a little bit of everything, and the title track „Momentous“ stands for that above all, where not only the playing time of over 12 minutes is monumental, but also its musical unfolding. Once again they give the honor to Percival Schuttenbach and introduce this song over two minutes with their wonderful folklore. A gentle transition follows with acoustic guitars joined by Reed’s soulful vocals. The song really takes its time and it slowly but surely builds up into an epic work of art that surprises with quite a few twists and turns.

And there is another surprise. Singer Stu Block (Annihilator, Into Eternity) celebrates here together with Reed Alton a very impressive vocal performance on the song „The Deafening“ And also here OSYRON inspire with a monumental song structure and an immensely gripping atmosphere. The still reserved melancholic beginning with wonderful vocal lines of both singers with its slightly threatening moods culminates in a gripping vocal duel between Reed and Stu with a radical finale. The guitar solo is super realized. It sounds unusual and is quite different for a change, but this reflects the theme of the song well. Thus, the theme of inner struggle with extreme emotions was perfectly staged all around, which can also be said of the great video.

OSYRON leave nothing to chance! With their album „Momentous“ OSYRON have created not only one great moment, but 10 of them. The band’s artistry is without a doubt on a very high level, which they showcase in a more than impressive way. The songs are arranged in an intelligent and balanced way, proving a great sense and feeling for atmosphere and details in the compositions, so that you feel the irresistible urge to go on this epic journey with OSYRON again and again.

OSYRON (Homepage/Facebook) aus Kanada sind seit ihrer Veröffentlichung der Single „Foundations“ im Jahr 2020 Stammgäste bei ‚metal-heads.de‘. Von daher könnt ihr das erste große Interview mit der Band hier finden. Die humorvollen Musiker spielen auf einem technisch sehr hohen Level. Davon konnte wir uns bereits ausgiebig überzeugen. Nun steht das neue Album „Momentous“ in den Startlöchern (VÖ 04.11.’22) und natürlich habe ich es mir nicht nehmen lassen mit der Band ein Interview zu führen. Freue mich sehr, dass die Band meiner Einladung gefolgt ist, so dass Ihr wieder über die Band und über das neue Album etwas erfahren könnt.

Der erste Platz

MH: Hallo Leute. Ich freue mich sehr, euch wieder auf ‚metal-heads.de‘ begrüßen zu dürfen. Seit unserem ersten Kontakt bei der Veröffentlichung von „Foundations“ im Jahr 2020 ist einige Zeit vergangen. Es folgte ein Jahr später der Re-Release mit „Kingsbane“. Mit diesem Album habt ihr kürzlich sogar den ersten Preis in der Kategorie Metal bei den YYC Awards (Facebook) gewonnen. Herzlichen Glückwunsch dazu!

Wann habt ihr von eurer Nominierung erfahren? Wie war der Kontakt mit all den anderen Musikern? Wie wurde der erste Platz gefeiert und wo ist die Trophäe jetzt?

OSYRON: Zunächst einmal möchten wir uns bedanken, dass ihr uns wieder eingeladen habt. Wie die meisten Nachrichten heutzutage haben wir zuerst über die sozialen Medien von unserer Nominierung erfahren. Die YYCMA-Veranstaltung selbst war fantastisch. Die Preisverleihung fand im Grey Eagle Resort in der Tsuut’ina First Nation statt, die direkt am Rande von Calgary liegt.

Es war eine tolle Erfahrung, die anderen Nominierten beim Empfang zu treffen und mit ihnen zu plaudern, wobei es in Calgary eine Menge großartiger musikalischer Talente gibt. Der erste Platz wurde direkt nach der Preisverleihung mit Bier und Jubel gefeiert, und die Trophäe steht jetzt stolz in unserem Studio/Proberaum.

Erfolg und Verstopfung

MH: Warum sieht Krzysztof so grimmig aus?

OSYRON: Wir glauben, es hat etwas damit zu tun, dass unser polnischer Bruder sowohl den Sieg als auch Verstopfung mit demselben Gesichtsausdruck feiert!

Viel Arbeit, tolle Drehorte

MH: Welche anderen Erfolge oder bedeutenden Momente sind euch in den letzten Monaten widerfahren?

OSYRON: Wir waren die meiste Zeit des Jahres im Studio, um an Momentous zu arbeiten, aber wir sind rausgegangen und haben einige Musikvideos für das Album gedreht und hatten das Glück dafür Zugang zu einigen erstaunlichen Örtlichkeiten zu bekommen.

Das Video zu unserer ersten Single „Dominion Day“ haben wir in einem über 100 Jahre alten Ringlokschuppen in Hanna, AB, gedreht, gefolgt vom Video zu „Beyond the Sun“ in einem 100 Jahre alten Theater in Camrose, AB.

Darauf folgte das große Video, das gerade für „The Deafening“ herauskam, bei dem wir mit einigen unserer Helden zusammenarbeiten durften. Mikolaj Rybacki und Katarzyna Bromirska von Percival Schuttenbach (The Witcher 3 OST) sind im Intro und während des gesamten Songs zu hören, während Stu Block (Into Eternity, Annihilator) als Gastsänger zu hören ist und es sogar geschafft hat, nach Calgary zu fliegen, um an dem Musikvideo mitzuwirken.

Spaß und Humor

MH: Wie wichtig sind Spaß und Humor in eurem Leben?

OSYRON: Wir können es eigentlich nicht ertragen, im selben Raum mit einander zu sein, aber wir benutzen Humor als Bewältigungsmechanismus, um dem Rest der Welt ein gesundes Verhältnis zwischen den Bandmitgliedern darzustellen. Spaß beiseite, Humor ist ein wichtiger Teil unserer Arbeit als Band. Denn wenn man keinen Spaß hat, was bringt es dann?

Der Urschrei

MH: Was ist die lustigste Anekdote im Zusammenhang mit der Entstehung von „Momentous“?

OSYRON: Wir alle haben lustige Momente, wenn wir unsere Alben machen, aber einer, der mir in den Sinn kommt, ist, als wir in den OCL Studios im ländlichen Alberta aufgenommen haben. Es war schon spät und wir waren alle betrunken und verdammt müde, aber wir versuchten, die Gang-Vocals in den frühen Morgenstunden aufzunehmen, während wir Zugang zu einem großen, akustisch fantastischen Raum hatten.

Der Tontechniker des Hauses war schon vor Stunden nach Hause gegangen, also stellten Cody und Tyler die Mikrofone auf und leiteten alles in den Kontrollraum. Sie brauchten jedoch ein paar Töne, um die Aufnahmequalität zu testen, und so ließ Krzysztof diesen slawischen Schrei im Live-Raum los, der ewig zu dauern schien. Indes wurde dieser Moment mit der Kamera festgehalten und ist irgendwo auf unserem Instagram-Gitter um Dezember 2021 zu sehen. Schaut es euch an, wenn ihr euch amüsieren wollt!

Die menschliche Kultur

MH: Musikalisch wandelt ihr normalerweise auf eher ernsten Pfaden. So beschäftigt sich die EP „Foundations“ mit historischen Hintergründen wie Krieg und sonstigen Konflikten. Dabei war besonders die historische Aufarbeitung in der Geschichte Kanadas war ein wichtiges Thema.
Hat der Song „Dominion Day“ vom neuen Album „Momentous“ auch etwas mit der Geschichte Kanadas zu tun? Geht es um den Feiertag, der heute Canada Day heißt?

Osyron: Der Song hat keinen direkten Bezug zum Canada Day oder dem, was früher Dominion Day genannt wurde. Er ist jedoch insofern davon inspiriert, als dass es immer wieder Veränderungen gibt, und Namen ändern sich, besonders wenn es um historische und traditionelle Feste geht.

Der Song handelt eher davon, dass wir das Unrecht und den Aufruhr, welches bestimmten Kulturen und Menschen widerfahren ist, damit bestimmte Ereignisse gefeiert werden können, nicht vollständig akzeptieren und anerkennen. Wir sind Kanadier, also haben wir ein kanadisch beeinflusstes Datum und einen Teil unserer Geschichte gewählt.

Themen des Albums

MH: Mit welchen Themen beschäftigt ihr euch generell auf dem neuen Album? Könnt ihr uns einen Überblick geben?

Osyron: Wir haben uns von der menschlichen Rasse inspirieren lassen und von dem, was unsere Gesellschaft und Spezies in den letzten 3 Jahren durchgemacht hat. Jeder war während dieser Zeit unabhängig von Weltanschauung, Kultur oder Religion auf die eine oder andere Weise betroffen. Zumal gab es bedeutende Momente in jedem unserer Leben und wir haben uns an Themen wie Opfer, Depression, Geschichte, Verlust, Sieg und Liebe orientiert.

„Osyron VHS Commentary Music Video Extravaganza“

MH: Wird es wieder ein Video geben, in dem ihr das Album in einer geselligen Runde gemeinsam besprecht, so wie ihr es bei „Foundations“ gemacht habt? Ich fand das eine wirklich gute Idee!

Osyron: Ein ähnliches Format gibt es bereits für Momentous, aber diesmal teilen wir die Dinge Song für Song auf. Insofern könnt ihr sie auf unseren sozialen Medien finden und wir werden sie auch auf YouTube veröffentlichen. Wir nennen sie die „Osyron VHS Commentary Music Video Extravaganza“-Serie. Hier ist ein Link zu dem Video, das wir gerade für „The Deafening“ veröffentlicht haben. In dem Video gehen wir sogar noch weiter auf einige der Fragen ein, die Sie in diesem Interview gestellt haben. Viel Glück beim Versuch, sie in chronologischer Reihenfolge anzusehen!

Macht Euch Euer eigenes Bild

MH: Das Cover Artwork wird von dunklen Farben dominiert, die sich in einer zerstörerischen Naturszene manifestieren. Man sieht eine Person, die auf ein Licht zuläuft, das in den dunklen Wolken schimmert.
Was soll diese Szene aussagen?

Osyron: Wir überlassen das eurer Interpretation, da es von einem unglaublich talentierten Künstler, Piotr Jamroz, gemalt wurde (er hat auch das Artwork für uns auf „Foundations“ gemacht), und alles, was wir gesagt haben, war, den Text zu nehmen, die Musik zu hören und zu zeichnen, was uns in den Sinn kommt.
Wir wollen nicht für ihn sprechen oder darüber, was er dachte, als er sich die Bilder ausdachte, also überlassen wir das euch!

Die Folk Musiker ‚Percival Schuttenbach‘

MH: Bei einigen Songs steuern die polnischen Folk-Musiker Percival Schuttenbach ihren Folk bei, auch bei der Single „The Deafening“. Wie wir bei unserem letzten Interview vor zwei Jahren erfahren haben, hat Gitarrist Krzysztof polnische Wurzeln.
War es seine Idee, sie auf das Album einzuladen? Hattet ihr vorher schon Kontakt mit ihnen? Was schätzt ihr besonders an dieser Band? Gibt es einen Lieblingssong?

OSYRON: Wir haben schon immer virtuelle „Extra“-Instrumente eingesetzt (wie Flöten, Celli, Geigen usw.). Und da wir für dieses Album ein größeres Budget hatten, dachten wir, dass es wirklich cool wäre, echte Musiker zu holen, die solche Parts auf einigen Songs spielen. Sowohl Krzysztof als auch Bobby haben das Videospiel „The Witcher 3“ gespielt und lieben es, also war es naheliegend, sie zu kontaktieren. Glücklicherweise waren sie der Idee gegenüber sehr aufgeschlossen, und so wurde die Zusammenarbeit fantastisch.

The Witcher

OSYRON: Für mich, Krzysztof, ist eine meiner Lieblingsspielserien die Witcher-Spiele. In The Witcher 3 ist Percival auf vielen Tracks des offiziellen Soundtracks zu hören. Insofern ist die Atmosphäre im Spiel ist dank Percival und dem, was er hinzugefügt hat, auf die nächste Stufe gehoben worden. Und wenn man sich einer Gruppe von Feinden nähert und das „le-le-le-le“-Lied ertönt, hat das einfach etwas Kultiges. Dieser Song ist natürlich „Silver for Monsters“, und er ist definitiv mein Lieblingssong – ich habe sogar eine Metal-Coverversion davon auf meinem YouTube! veröffentlicht.

OSYRON: Aber Percival ist nicht nur Musik für den Witcher-Soundtrack, sie haben eine ganze Reihe von Alben herausgebracht, und ihre slawischen/heidnischen/östlichen Melodien sind einfach immer so schön anzuhören. Ich war natürlich nervös, als ich mich an sie wandte, weil ich sie als Künstler so sehr schätze und respektiere. Zu meiner Überraschung waren sie sehr bereit, an dieser Zusammenarbeit mitzuwirken, und was sie in die drei Songs einbrachten, an denen sie arbeiteten, war wirklich wunderbar. Mikolaj und Katarzyna sind wunderbare Menschen, talentierte Musiker, Songschreiber und einfach knallharte Typen.

Gastsänger Stu Block

MH: Dann ist da noch die Zusammenarbeit mit Stu Block bei „The Deafening“. Wie kam es zu der Konstellation und wer hatte die Idee eines Duells zwischen den beiden Sängern, das auch im Video visuell toll umgesetzt wurde?

Osyron: Das ist ursprünglich entstanden, als wir in der Schreibphase für „Momentous“ waren, und wir dachten, es wäre eine coole Ergänzung, einen bekannten Sänger in einen der Songs einzubauen. Einer von Reeds größten Einflüssen in seiner Jugend war Stu Block und seine Arbeit mit der kanadischen Metalband INTO ETERNITY. Daher wandte er sich persönlich an Stu, der sofort an der Rolle auf „The Deafening“ interessiert war. Das klappte sehr gut, denn Stu hatte gerade die Aufnahmen zum letzten ANNIHILATOR-Album beendet und war vor kurzem wieder zu INTO ETERNITY gestoßen.

Die Chemie stimmt

Ursprünglich hatten wir Stu gefragt, ob er nur eine Strophe des Stücks singen würde, aber er ging aufs Ganze und fügte seine hochfliegenden Harmonien in den Refrains sowie einige gutturale Vocals in bestimmten Abschnitten hinzu. Als der Song zur dritten Single auserkoren wurde und ein eigenes Musikvideo erhalten sollte, wandte sich Reed erneut an Stu, um zu erfahren, ob er Interesse hätte, uns bei den Dreharbeiten zu begleiten. Obwohl er zu der Zeit sehr beschäftigt war, sagte Stu trotzdem zu und kam für ein paar Tage zu uns nach Calgary. Es stellte sich heraus, dass er ein sehr entspannter und bodenständiger Mensch ist, und wir haben uns während der Dreharbeiten gut verstanden! Wer weiß… vielleicht wird Mr. Block in Zukunft einmal mit uns auf der Bühne stehen

Die Freude an Fantasy Spielen

MH: Krzysztof hat sich beim letzten Interview als (musikalischer) Nerd bezeichnet. Wie würden sich die anderen charakterisieren?

Bobby: Ein Nerd in den meisten anderen Fällen wäre wahrscheinlich auch zutreffend. Abgesehen von der Musik sind es auch Videospiele und Computer, die dazugehören. Abgesehen von der Programmierung von Spielen in Unity sieht das nächste Jahr in Sachen Spiele ziemlich gut aus (Diablo 4, Hogwarts Legacy, Baldur’s Gate 3, usw.), so dass die Band vielleicht eine Pause einlegen muss, damit sie Zeit hat, all diese Spiele zu spielen.

Harter Tobak

MH: „Momentous“ ist ein hartes, düsteres Album geworden, viel mehr als eure vorherigen Alben. Wie viel Wut steckt in dem Album?

OSYRON: Es ist so viel, dass wir das Album St. Anger nennen wollten, aber irgendwie war der Name schon vergeben. Verflucht!

MH: Abgesehen von der Musik, was sind eure Methoden, um in schwierigen Momenten oder Zeiten mit Frustration, Wut oder anderen schlechten Gefühlen umzugehen?

Osyron: Jeder hat seine eigene Art, mit diesen Problemen umzugehen, aber aus dem Haus und der Großstadt rauszukommen, um etwas Zeit in der Natur zu verbringen, ist eine großartige Möglichkeit, den Kopf frei zu bekommen und sich neu zu konzentrieren. Sport zu treiben und sich auszupowern ist ein weiterer therapeutischer Weg, um alles loszuwerden. Es hilft auch, ein bisschen von der Welt abzuschalten, indem man ein Buch liest, ein Spiel spielt oder sich Huckepack nehmen lässt und so tut, als würde man von Frodo und Sam herumgetragen werden.

Herausforderungen

MH: Auf „Momentous“ zeigst du wieder einmal große, abwechslungsreiche Kunst auf hohem technischen Niveau, sowohl was den Gesang als auch die Instrumentierung angeht.
Was waren die besonderen Herausforderungen bei diesem Album?

Osyron: Eine der größten Herausforderungen war die Terminplanung. Da wir an drei Songs mitgewirkt haben, alle unsere Parts aufnehmen und alles innerhalb der vorgegebenen Fristen abmischen mussten, hatten wir zeitweise definitiv Probleme, den Zeitplan einzuhalten. Wir haben es viel besser gemacht als bei den vorherigen Veröffentlichungen, aber wir haben immer noch viel Raum für Verbesserungen – und das gefällt uns.

Jeder Song eine Geschichte

MH: Wo habt ihr euch eurer Meinung nach weiterentwickelt?

OSYRON: Wir haben uns dieses Mal viel mehr darauf konzentriert, starke Songs zu schreiben. Wir wollten, dass sie all die Dinge mitbringen, die wir mögen: Hooks, epische Melodien, gigantische Abschnitte und Riffs in Hülle und Fülle – aber wir wollten auch nicht, dass sie so klingen, als würden sie nur diese Kästchen abhaken. Wir wollten, dass jeder Song eine individuelle, vollständige Geschichte erzählt. Er sollte eine Stimmung erzeugen und Höhen, Tiefen und Schläge liefern, wenn es Sinn machte, und manchmal auch, wenn es keinen Sinn machte. Wir denken, dass wir diese Ziele mit dieser Platte erreicht haben!

Das Songwriting-Konzept

MH: Wie einigt ihr euch auf verschiedene Ideen für die kompositorische Umsetzung eines Songs?

Osyron: Wir haben ein Abstimmungssystem, bei dem zu Beginn des Schreibens einer Platte jeder seine Ideen einbringt. Manchmal sind es komplette Demos, oder nur Abschnitte/eine Idee. Wir setzen uns zusammen, hören sie uns alle an und bewerten sie. Nachdem wir die Liste auf die besten 10 bis 15 reduziert haben, suchen wir uns einen Song nach dem anderen aus. Einer der Songs war zum Beispiel ein Schlagzeugsolo, das Cody gemacht hatte. Krzysztof nahm dieses Schlagzeugsolo und schrieb eine Art Riff darum herum, schnappte sich dann ein anderes Schlagzeug-Fill von einer aufgenommenen Übungsstunde und klebte es zusammen. Tyler nahm dann dieses Arrangement, fügte ein paar Abschnitte hinzu und hatte den Großteil des Songs im Grunde fertig. Dann gab es noch ein paar abschließende Gruppenentscheidungen über die Erweiterung von Abschnitten, das Hinzufügen von kleinen Feinheiten – und voila, der Song war geboren.

MH: Gibt es Hoffnung, dass ihr nächstes Jahr live in Europa auftreten werdet?

Osyron: Das würden wir sehr gerne tun. Es ist noch nichts in Stein gemeißelt, aber es ist ein absoluter Traum und ein Ziel von uns, dorthin zu kommen und zu spielen!

OSYRON and momentous moments

OSYRON (Homepage/Facebook) are regulars at ‚metal-heads.de‘ since their release of the single „Foundations“ in 2020. You can find the first big interview with the band here. The humorous musicians play on a technically very high level. We could already convince ourselves of that extensively. Now the new album „Momentous“ is almost ready to set you on fire (release date 04.11.’22) and of course I didn’t miss the chance to do an interview with the band. I’m very happy that the band has followed my invitation, so you can again learn about the band and about the new album something.

First place award

MH: Hello guys. I am very happy to welcome you again at ‚metal-heads.de. Since our first contact at the release of „Foundations“ in 2020 some time has passed. It followed a year later the re-release with „Kingsbane“. With this album you even recently won the first prize in the Metal category at the YYC Awards. Congratulations for that!

When did you hear about your nomination? How was the contact with all the other musicians? How hard was the first place celebrated and where is the trophy now?

OSYRON: First, thanks for having us on! Like most news these days, we first heard about our nomination via social media. The YYCMA event itself was fantastic. The awards were held at the Grey Eagle Resort on the Tsuut’ina First Nation which is right on the outskirts of Calgary. Meeting and chatting with the other nominees at the reception was a great experience. There’s a lot of great musical talent in Calgary. First place was celebrated with beers and cheers immediately following the awards ceremony, and the trophy now sits proudly in our studio/rehearsal space.

Success and constipation

MH: Why does Krzysztof look so grim?

OSYRON: We believe it has something to do with how our Polish brother celebrates both victory and constipation with the same facial expression!

Much work

MH: What other successes or significant moments have happened to you in recent months?

OSYRON: We’ve had our heads down in the studio the better part of the year working on Momentous, but we have gotten out and filmed some music videos for the album and have been fortunate to have access to some amazing spaces to do so. We shot the video for our first single “Dominion Day” in a 100+ year old railway roundhouse out in Hanna, AB, followed by filming the video for “Beyond the Sun“ in a 100 year old theatre in Camrose, AB.

These were followed up by the big video which just came out for “The Deafening”, in which we got to work with some of our heroes. Mikolaj Rybacki and Katarzyna Bromirska of Percival Schuttenbach (The Witcher 3 OST) are featured in the intro and playing throughout the song, while Stu Block (Into Eternity, Annihilator) is featured on guest vocals and was actually able to fly in to Calgary to take part in the music video.

Fun & Humor

MH: How important is fun and humor in your life?

OSYRON: We actually cannot stand being in the same room as eachother but use humor as a coping mechanism to portray healthy band member relations to the rest of the world. All joking aside, humor is an important part of how we operate as a band. After all, If you’re not having fun, what’s the point?

The scream

MH: What is the funniest anecdote in connection with the making of “Momentous”?

We all have fun moments when making our albums, but one that comes to mind is when we were recording out at OCL Studios in rural Alberta. It was late and we were all drunk and tired as hell, but trying to record the gang vocals in the wee hours while we had access to a big acoustically awesome space. The house engineer had gone home hours ago, so Cody and Tyler were setting up mics and routing things to the control room. They needed some sound to test the recording quality, so Krzysztof let out this visceral slavic scream in the live room that just seemed to go on forever. The moment was captured on camera and is somewhere on our instagram grid around December 2021. Go give it a watch if you want a good laugh!

Human culture

MH: Musically you usually walk on more serious paths. The EP „Foundations“ had a historical background dealing with war and conflicts. Especially the historical reappraisal in the history of Canada was an important topic.

Does the song „Dominion Day“ from the new album „Momentous“ also have something to do with the history of Canada? Is it about the holiday that is now called „Canada Day“?

OSYRON: It is not directly correlated with Canada Day or what it used to be known as Dominion Day. However it is inspired by it in the sense that there is always change, and names change especially when dealing with historical and traditional celebrations. The song more so deals with how we don’t fully accept and acknowledge the wrongs and turmoil that certain cultures and people have gone through in order for certain events to be celebrated. We are Canadian, so we chose a Canadian influenced date and part of our history.

Themes of the album

MH: Which themes do you generally deal with on the new album? Can you give us an overview?

OSYRON: We were inspired by the human race and what our society and species went through these past 3 years. Regardless of view, culture or religion everyone was affected in some way or another. It was a momentous moment in each of our lives and we leant towards themes of sacrifice, depression, history, loss, victory, and love.

MH: Will there be a video again, where you discuss the album in a sociable round all together, like you did it with „Foundations“? I thought that was a really good idea!

OSYRON: A similar format is already in motion for Momentous, but this time we are splitting things out on a song-by-song basis. You can find these on our social media and we’ll be making sure to put them all out on YouTube as well. We are calling them the “Osyron VHS Commentary Music Video Extravaganza” series. Here is a link to the one we just released for “The Deafening”. Actually, we elaborate further on some of the questions you have asked in this interview in the video. Interpret it for yourself

MH: The cover is dominated by dark colors that manifest themselves in a destructive nature scene. You see a person running towards a light that shimmers in the dark clouds.

What is this scene supposed to say?

OSYRON: We’ll leave this to your interpretation as it was done by an amazingly talented artist, Piotr Jamroz (also did artwork for us on Foundations), and all we said was to take the lyrics, listen to the music, and draw what comes to mind.

We don’t want to speak for him, or what he thought as he came up with the art, so we’ll leave that to you!

Folk musicians Percival Schuttenbeck

MH: On some songs the Polish folk musicians Percival Schuttenbeck contribute their folk, also on the single „The Deafening“. As we learned during our last interview two years ago, guitarist Krzysztof has Polish roots.

Was it his idea to invite them on the album?

OSYRON: We’ve always employed virtual “extra” instruments (like flutes, cellos, violins, etc.) and since we had a bigger budget for this album we felt it would be really cool to get real players to play parts like that on some songs. Both Krzysztof and Bobby played and loved The Witcher 3 video game, so reaching out to them was a no-brainer. Thankfully they were very receptive to the idea, so the collaboration turned out fantastic.

The Witcher

MH: Did you have contact with them before? What do you particularly appreciate about this band? Is there a favorite track?

OSYRON: For myself, Krzysztof , one of my favorite game series is the Witcher games. The Witcher 3 features Percival on many tracks throughout the Official Soundtrack. The atmosphere in the game is taken to that next level thanks to Percival and what they added. And there’s just something so iconic when you approach a group of enemies and the “le-le-le-le” song comes on. That song is, of course „Silver for Monsters“ and it’s definitely my favorite track – I’ve even released a metal cover of it on my YouTube!.

OSYRON: But Percival isn’t just Witcher soundtrack music, they have a range of albums out and their Slavic/Pagan/Eastern melodies are always just so good to listen to. They make me feel like I’m somehow closer to my birthplace.I was nervous reaching out to them, of course, because I loved them as artists and respected them so much. To my surprise they were very up for working on these collaborations, and what they brought to the three songs they worked on was truly wonderful. Mikolaj and Katarzyna are wonderful people, talented players, writers and just bad asses.

Mr. Block

MH: Then there’s the cooperation with Stu Block on “The Deafening”. How did the constellation come about and who had the idea of a duel between the two singers, which was also implemented visually great in the video?

OSYRON: This initially came about when we were in the writing phase for Momentous, and we thought it would be a cool addition to add a featured vocalist to one of the songs. One of Reed’s major influences coming up was Stu Block, and his work with the Canadian metal powerhouse INTO ETERNITY. As such, he personally reached out to Stu who was immediately interested in the slot on “The Deafening”. It worked out extremely well, as Stu had just recently finished the recording of ANNIHILATOR’s most recent album, and had recently re-joined INTO ETERNITY

OSYRON: Originally we had asked Stu if he would lend his vocals to just one verse of the track, but he instead went all out and added his soaring harmonies in the choruses as well as some guttural vocals in certain sections. When the song was selected as the third single and was to get its own music video, Reed again reached out to Stu to see if he would be interested in joining us in filming. Even though he was very busy at the time, Stu still said yes to the video feature, and joined us in Calgary for a couple days. Turns out he is a very chill/down to earth individual, and we all got along great during the process! Who knows… perhaps Mr. Block will join us on stage sometime in the future

The player

MH: Krzysztof described himself as a (musical) nerd during the last interview. How would the others characterize themselves?

OSYRON Bobby: A nerd in most other cases would probably be accurate as well. Other than music, video games and computers would be up there as well. Other than programming games in Unity, the next year for games is looking pretty spiffy (Diablo 4, Hogwarts Legacy, Baldur’s Gate 3, etc.), so the band might have to go on hiatus so there’s time to play all of these. Priorities of course.

St. Anger?

MH: „Momentous“ has become a hard gloomy album, much more than your previous albums. How much anger is in the album?

OSYRON: There’s so much that we wanted to name the album St. Anger, but somehow the name was already taken. Dammit!

MH: Besides music, what are your methods of dealing with frustration and anger or other bad feelings in difficult moments or times?

OSYRON: Everyone has their own ways of dealing with these issues, but getting out of the house, and the big city for some nature time is a great way to clear the mind and refocus. Working out and getting your swole on is another therapeutic way to get that all out. Even getting a bit disconnected from the world by reading a book, playing a game, or getting piggybacks and pretending your Frodo and Sam is carrying you around helps.

challenges and developments

MH: On „Momentous“ you once again reveal great varied art on a high technical level, regarding both vocals and instrumentation.

What were the special challenges on this album?

OSYRON: One of the biggest challenges was scheduling. With collaborations on 3 songs, having to record all our parts and get it all mixed on deadlines, we definitely struggled at times to keep up with the schedule. we ‘ve done a lot better than any previous release, but we’ve still got lots of room for improvement – and we like that.

MH: Where do you think you have developed further?

OSYRON: We focussed much more on writing strong songs this time around. We wanted them to bring all the things we like to the table; hooks, epic melodies, gigantic sections, and riffs galore – but we didn’t want them to sound like they were just checking those boxes either. We wanted each song to tell an individual, full, story. Set a mood, and deliver highs, lows and punches when it made sense, and sometimes when it didn’t, too. We think we nailed those objectives with this record!

The songwriting voting system

MH: How do you agree on different ideas for the compositional realization of a song?

OSYRON: We actually have a voting system, where, at the start of writing a record, everyone brings ideas to the table. Sometimes they’re full demos, or just sections/an idea. We get together, listen to them all and rank them. After we whittle the list down to something like a top 10-15 we start picking out songs one by one to do.

For example, one of the songs started as a drum-solo that Cody had done. Krzysztof took that drum solo, and wrote a sort of riff around it, and then sniped another drum fill from a recorded practice session, and glued them together. Tyler then took that arrangement, and added a few sections and had most of the song basically done. Then there were some final group decisions about extending sections, adding little touches – and voila, the song was born.

MH: Is there any hope that you will perform live in Europe next year?

OSYRON: We absolutely would love too. Nothing’s set in stone yet, but it’s an absolute dream and goal of ours to get over there and play!

Und umgehend war ich von dieser Band angetan. Es folgte in Interview (Link) und später rezensierte ich 2021 ihr Re-Release-Album „Kingsbane“ (Review). Mit diesem Album haben sie dieses Jahr übrigens bei den kanadischen YYC Music Awards den ersten Platz eingefahren.

Trotz der meist ernsten Themen, die sie in den Songs erfassen, hat die Truppe viel Humor. Musikalisch sind sie vielseitig aufgestellt und technisch ware Könner. War „Kingsbane“ noch eher ein klassischer, aber genialer Power-Metal-Angriff, wurde der Sound mit „Foundations“ härter und progressiver. Nun steht der Release des neuen Albums „Momentous“ kurz bevor. Es wird am 04. November erscheinen. Und wenn ich mir die ersten Singles so anhöre, dann wird das neue Album ein wahrer Knaller. Der Härtegrad wird auf jeden Fall noch mal um einiges nach oben geschraubt und das ohnehin schon hohe technische Level wird auf die nächste Stufe gehoben.

Dominion Day

als erste Single gibt einen Vorgeschmack auf das, was uns OSYRON auf ihrem neuen Album bieten werden. Der Sound ist knackig hart und noch düsterer geworden. Dementsprechend martialisch beginnt der Song. Kurze Zeit später brilliert Sänger Reed Alton mit seinen fantastischen Vocals. Er hat eine unheimlich emotionale Ader in jeder Hinsicht und eine wahnsinnige Kontrolle über seine Stimme, auch dann, wenn er völlig eskaliert. Der Gesang ist eine Kunst unter vielen bei OSYRON. Diese zarte klare Stimme in der emotionalen Einführung des Songs im Vergleich zu den krafvoll gesungenen Parts bis hin zur totalen Eskalation sind mehr als bemerkenswert. Diese Range von Reed Alton ist Wahnsinn.

Beyond The Sun

Neben dem fabelhaften Gesang glänzen alle Instrumentalisten der Band mit ausgezeichneten Skills. Die technischen Fähigkeiten sind auf einem sehr hohen Level und man kann nur Füllhörner voll des Lobes über sie ausschütten. So schaffen es OSYRON progressive Strukturen zu erschaffen ohne den Hörer zu überfordern. Sie bewahren sich trotzdem mit großartigen Melodien und epischen Chören eine Eingängigkeit, die Euch immer wieder einfängt.

Es entsteht eine atemberaubende Dynamik und man gerät immer wieder ins Staunen, was OSYRON alles in einem einzelnen Song aus dem Hut zaubern.

“The Deafening”

Diese Single verblüfft im Intro mit folkloristischen Klängen, die OSYRON den Musikern Mikołaj Rybacki und Katarzyna Bromirska von der Band PERCIVAL SchUTTENBACH ( polnische Folk Metal-Band) zu verdanken haben. Damit rennt man bei mir immer offene Türen ein. Und es gibt noch eine Überraschung. Sänger Stu Block (Annihilator, ex-Iced Earth) zelebriert hier zusammen mit Reed Alton eine sehr beeindruckende Gesagangsperformance. Und auch hier begeistern OSYRON mit einem monumentalen Songaufbau und einer immensen Atmossphäre. So wurde das Thema des inneren Kampfes mit extremen Emotionen perfekt eingefangen.

Die tolle Videoproduktion mit den genialen Schnitten, Blickwinkeln und Kameraführung verstärkt diesen Effekt sehr gekonnt.

Das Album „Momentous“ wird ein Genuß

für jeden Metal-Fan. Davon bin ich fest überzeugt. Es wird vorab noch ein neues Interview geben und dann natürlich auch das Review des neuen Albums „Momentous“. Das Releasedatum solltet ihr euch auf jeden Fall dick im Kalender vormerken oder am besten direkt vorbestellen.

OSYRON (Homepage/Facebook) are one of the bands I’ve been following with excitement ever since I heard their EP „Foundations“ (Review) in 2020. And immediately I was gripped by this band. It followed in interview (Link) and later in 2021 I reviewed their re-release album „Kingsbane“ (Review). By the way, with this album they won the first place at the Canadian YYC Music Awards this year.

Despite the mostly serious topics that they capture in the songs, the mates has a lot of humor as I have experienced so far. Musically they are versatile and technically they are experts. If „Kingsbane“ was still rather a classic but brilliant power metal attack, the sound became more progressive and sometimes harder with „Foundations“. Now the release of the new album „Momentous“ is imminent. It will be released on November 04. And when I listen to the first three singles, the new album will be a real blast. The degree of hardness is definitely screwed up again and the already high technical skills are raised to the next level.

„Dominion Day“

as the first single gives a great foretaste of what OSYRON will offer us on their new album. The sound is crisply hard and has become even darker. Accordingly, the song begins martial. A short time later singer Reed Alton shines with his fantastic vocals. I don’t know many singers who sing with such fervor. He has an incredibly emotional streak in every sense and an insane control over his voice, even when he completely escalates. The vocals are one exceptional art among many arts in OSYRON. This delicate clear voice in the emotional intro of the song compared to the powerfully parts up to the total escalation are more than remarkable. This vocal range of Reed Alton is insane.

„Beyond The Sun“

Besides the fabulous vocals, all members of the band shine with excellent skills. The technical skills are on a very high level and one can only pour out cornucopias full of praise about them. Thus OSYRON manage to create progressive structures without overwhelming the listener. They still keep a catchiness with great melodies and epic choirs that captivate you time after time.

A breathtaking dynamic is created and one is always amazed at what OSYRON can magic into a single song.

“The Deafening”

This single amazes in the intro with folkloristic sounds, which OSYRON have to thank the musicians Mikołaj Rybacki and Katarzyna Bromirska from the band PERCIVAL SchUTTENBACH (polish folk metal band). That’s always an open door for me. And there is one more surprise. Singer Stu Block (Annihilator, ex-Iced Earth) celebrates here together with Reed Alton a very impressive vocal performance. And also here OSYRON inspire with a monumental song structure and an immense atmosphere. Thus, the theme of inner struggle with extreme emotions was captured perfectly.

The great video production with the ingenious cuts, angles and camera work enhances this effect very skillfully.

The album „Momentous“ will be a pleasure

for every metal fan. I am firmly convinced of that. There will be a new interview in advance and then of course the review of the new album „Momentous“. In any case, you should mark the release date in your calendar or pre-order it directly.
