BIZARREKULT

BIZARREKULT (Facebook/Bandcamp) ist ein Projekt, dessen Saatkorn bereits vor 16 Jahren im Kopf von Roman V. gepflanzt wurde. Bevor er allerdings seinen Weg zur Musik fand, war der Multi-Instrumentalist zunächst ein Dichter. Seit seiner Kindheit fand Roman ein Ventil im Schreiben, und 2006 gründete er schließlich BIZARREKULT als akustische Begleitung und Untermalung seiner verbalen Äußerungen.

Musik ist vielflältige Kunst! Auch Black Metal stellt eine Kunstform dar, die oft unterschätzt wird und sich mit Vorurteilen rumplagen muss. BIZARREKULT beweisen ebenfalls, dass Black Metal kreativ und sogar emotional werden kann. „Du Lovet Meg“ („Du hast es versprochen“) als Opener unterstreicht diesen Aspekt. Zunächst geht es traditionell mit Blastbeats und extremen Vocals an den Start, was wütende Verzweiflung offenbart. Aber plötzlich wird alles anders…. Lieblicher Frauengesang von Dina übernimmt die Hauptrolle in einer ruhigen meditativen Passage. Was für eine verletzliche Komponente in dieser harten Welt!

Man merkt den Songs an, dass sie Gefühle verarbeiten und bestimmte Botschaften verinnerlichen, die der Künstler mit entsprechenden musikalischen Mitteln ausdrückt. Daher ist es kein BLACK METAL, der ausnahmslos Druck macht und nach vorne prescht. Hier wird vielmehr Wert auf eine intensive Atmosphäre gelegt.

Das Album bietet eine Reihe von tollen und intensiven Momenten. Es ist wahrlich kein Werk, was sich schnell offenbart, sondern nach und nach immer mehr von sich preisgibt und seine Wirkung entfaltet. Gleichförmigkeit ist hier ein Fremdwort. Die Mischung von atmosphärischem Doom mit der furiosen Wildheit des Black Metal bildet zusammen ein fesselndes Konstrukt, dass sogar mit epischen Momenten aufwarten kann.

MOONLIGHT SORCERY

MOONLIGHT SORCERY (Facebook) aus Finnland und gibt es seit 2018. Nun haben sie dieses Jahr ihr Debüt „Horned Lord Of The Throned Castle“ auferstehen lassen. Leider habe ich dieses Album erst später entdeckt. Kann ja mal passieren bei der Flut von Veröffentlichungen. Zum Glück ist es mir doch noch zu Ohren gekommen, denn es hat mich so sehr umgehauen, dass ich ein kurzes Review hier an dieser Stelle nachholen muss. Denn dieses Debüt hat einen Platz in der Toplist mehr als verdient.

Was die Finnen hier zum Besten geben, ist der Wahnsinn. Absolut ausgereifte Songs, die melodischen Black Metal von allerfeinster Güte entstehen lassen. Dazu gesellt sich noch ein dezenter symphonischer Einschlag, der das Ganze noch epischer werden lässt. Hier wird an allen Fronten geballert, was die Instrumente hergeben. Aber es entsteht kein Chaos oder ein Soundbrei, denn die Band versteht sich darauf fantastische Kompositionen zu erschaffen, die mit einer eindrucksvollen instrumentalen Darbietung gewürdigt werden, die alles detailgetreu mit allen Feinheiten rüberbringt. Da geht auch ein Dank an die erstklassige Produktion raus.

Lebendig melodisch

Wer den Opener „To Withhold The Day“ hört, wird direkt diese super Qualität erkennen und sich darin verlieben. An den Drums wird eine unglaublich lebendige Energie entfesselt. Und dann diese geilen Gitarren! Die rasanten Riffs sind der Wahnsinn und die megastarken Leads fliegen nur so durch den Sound und mittendrin werden noch epische Solos entfesselt. Ich würde sogar so weit gehen zu behaupten, dass ich noch keine bessere Leadgitarre im Black Metal gehört habe als hier. Damit haben MOONLIGHT SORCERY wirklich ein sehr prägnantes Qualitätsmerkmal. Dazu muss man sich nur mal den Instrumentaltrack „The Moonlit Dance of the Twisted Jester’s Blood-soaked Rituals“ reinziehen. Ich stehe eigentlich gar nicht so auf reine Instrumentaltracks, aber dieses Ding hat mich echt beeindruckt. Wahnsinn!

MOONLIGHT SORCERY ist mit ihrem Album „“Horned Lord Of The Throned Castle“ direkt ein Hammeralbum gelungen. Hier offenbart sich ein unglaubliches Potential, dass bereits jetzt unglaublich beeindruckt und eine mehr als vielversprechende Vision für weitere großartige musikalische Werke darstellt. Dieser Band sollte man unbedingt folgen!

„In Coldest Embrace“

WALG

Zwei Männer aus den Niederlanden stehen für WALG (Facebook/Bandcamp). Und sie erschaffen epischen Black Metal auf höchstem Niveau. Und sie sind verdammt fleißig, denn nach dem Album „II“ haben sie nur ein Jahr benötigt, um ihr Album „III“ zu veröffentlichen.

WALG gehen mit der gewohnten Vehemenz vor. Immer noch ist dieser Wahnsinn und diese Wut in den Vocals, was den Sound so auszeichnet. Aber das ist nicht alles.

Man nutzt dezente symphonische Elemente, um den Sound noch mehr Tiefe zu verleihen. Außerdem spielt man hin und wieder mit cleanen Vocals in Form von sakralen Chören, die alles etwas auflockern und für eine mystische Komponente sorgen. Die Songs sind nach wie vor eine Wucht, ein gnadenloser Sturm, in dem sich melodische Winde entfesseln und die mystische Komponente immer irgendwo mitweht. Dies wird vor allem beim Song „Geselberg“ deutlich, der zu Beginn mit den Klängen eines Didgeridoo eingeleitet wird. Im Verlauf erklingen im Hintergrund rituale Gesänge. 

Es gibt auf dem Album als Bonus noch eine gnadenlos gute Coverversion von dem Song „Mourning Palace“, der im Original von DIMMU BORGIR komponiert wurde.man muss sagen, dass das ruppige WALG-Gewand dem Song unheimlich gut steht. Eine monumentale Interpretation und Würdigung des Originals. Die typischen Melodien des Originals sind deutlich erkennbar und der epische Ansatz wird eindrucksvoll umgesetzt, wobei der Song eine Extraportion Härte und Wahnsinn verpasst bekommt. (Review)

„Geselberg“

CRAVING

CRAVING (Facebook) sind ein Metal Act aus Deutschland, der schwer in eine Schublade zu stecken ist, denn gerade auf dem neuen Album „Call Of The Sirens“ geht es sehr vielseitig zu. Aufgrund des größtenteils überaus wütenden und martialischen Sounds habe ich CRAVING in die Black Metal in diese Kategorie gepackt. Ich kann damit gut leben und ich hoffe, dass ihr es auch könnt.

„Call Of The Sirens“ war die erste Singleauskopplung und hatte mich auf Anhieb in ihren Bann gezogen. CRAVING impliziert viel Heavy Metal in seine Songs, was die ganze Musikgewaltigkeit auflockert und natürlich der Melodik sehr gelegen kommt. Darüber hinaus lassen CRAVING epische Momente wahr werden. Dies hört man bei „Call Of The Sirens“ direkt bei der ausgedehnten Einleitung des Songs mit seinen krachenden Riffs. Zusammen mit den furiosen Drums ist der Einstieg schon mal sehr imposant gelungen. Sodann geht es zur Sache mit den harschen Vocals von Ivan Chertov. Ivan kennt keine Gnade, wenn er seiner Energie freien Lauf lässt. Hin und wieder fallen die herausragenden Chöre in den Songs auf.  Sie sorgen immer wieder für tolle Momente in dem ansonsten rüden wütenden Sound.

CRAVING ist mit „Call Of Sirens“ ein Geniestreich gelungen. Man hat die schon vorhandenen Stärken weiter ausgebaut und sogar neue hinzugefügt, um es zu einem komplexen ausgereiften musikalischen Kunstwerk zu formen. Mit einer ungeheuren Energie und Ideenvielfalt zelebrieren CRAVING epische Geschichten und lassen es dabei gehörig krachen. Dabei offenbaren CRAVING viel Originalität und Spielwitz. „Call Of Sirens“ ist härter geworden und diese Härte steht dem Sound sehr gut zu Gesicht, was sich vor allem auch in der erstklassigen druckvollen detailreichen Produktion niederschlägt. (Review)

NIGHT CROWNED

Von NIGHT CROWNED (Facebook) hatte ich sehr viel erwartet. Denn bereits mit ihrem Vorgänger „Hädanfärd“ (Review) aus dem Jahr 2021 hatten sie eine dunkle Perle des modernen melodischen Black Metal erschaffen und dies wurde von mir mit der Höchstpunktzahl gewürdigt. Deshalb war ich irre gespannt, was sie für neue dunkle Geschichten erschaffen würden. Tatsächlich heißt ihr neues Album schlichtweg „Tales“. Und sie haben es mit Bravour geschafft mein Black Metal Album des Jahres 2023 zu erschaffen.

Mit flammendem Herzen und brutaler Energie stürmen NIGHT CROWNED drauflos. Es zeichnet sie aus, dass ihre Songs voller feiner Details sind und die Grenzen des Genres gekonnt ausloten. Der Songaufbau bleibt jederzeit brutal spannend und vielseitig. Es wird eben nicht nur monoton drauflos geprügelt, dass die Fetzen fliegen. Bei NIGHT CROWNED geht es um mehr. Sie lassen eine epische Melodik und ochestrale Elemente einfließen, um sich dann immer wieder mit voller Wucht in die tosenden Fluten zu schmeißen.

Ich begrüße z.B auch den neuen folkischen Ansatz, der sich bereits im zweiten Song „She Comes At Night“ manefestiert. Ein hochgradig melodisches Erlebnis mit einer stimmungsvollen Instrumentierung, dass den Black Metal in andere Dimensionen vordringen lässt. Die weiblichen Vocals von Gastsängerin Therése Thomsson intensivieren zusätzlich die Atmosphäre.

NIGHT CROWNED erschaffen auf „Tales“ Geschichten, die ein opulentes unheilvolles Drama in dunkler epischer Pracht beschreiben. Der Sound ist noch orchestraler und reichhaltiger geworden. Die Produktion hat noch mehr Volumen bekommen. Man hat das Gefühl Teil eines finsteren monumentalen Fantasyfilms zu sein. „Tales“ ist ein actionlastiger epischer Blockbuster und die perfekte Fortsetzung der Reise von NIGHT CROWNED. (Review)

BIZARREKULT

BIZARREKULT (Facebook/Bandcamp) is a project whose seed was planted in Roman V.’s head 16 years ago. Before he found his way to music, however, the multi-instrumentalist was initially a poet. Since his childhood, Roman found an outlet in writing, and in 2006 he finally founded BIZARREKULT as an acoustic accompaniment and backdrop to his verbal utterances.

Music is a multifaceted art! Black metal is also an art form that is often underestimated and has to deal with prejudices. BIZARREKULT also prove that black metal can be creative and even emotional. „Du Lovet Meg“ („You promised“) as the opener underlines this aspect. It starts traditionally with blast beats and extreme vocals, revealing furious despair. But suddenly everything changes…. Lovely female vocals by Dina take over the leading role in a quiet meditative passage. What a vulnerable component in this harsh world!

You can tell that the songs process emotions and internalize certain messages, which the artist expresses with appropriate musical means. That’s why it’s not only wild aggressive BLACK METAL. Instead, emphasis is placed on creating an intense atmosphere.

The album offers a range of great and intense moments. It is truly not a work that reveals itself quickly, but gradually reveals more and more of itself and unfolds its effect. Uniformity is a foreign word here. The mixture of atmospheric doom with the furious ferocity of black metal forms a captivating construct that can even come up with epic moments.

MOONLIGHT SORCERY

MOONLIGHT SORCERY (Facebook/Bandcamp) from Finland and have been around since 2018. Now they have resurrected their longplayer debut „Horned Lord Of The Throned Castle“ this year with the label ‚Avantgarde Music‚. Unfortunately, I only discovered this album later. It can happen with the flood of releases. Fortunately, it did come to my attention, because it blew me away so much that I have to make up for it with a short review here. Because this debut more than deserves a place in the top list.

What the Finns deliver here is insane. Absolutely mature songs that create melodic black metal of the very finest quality. There’s also a subtle symphonic touch that makes the whole thing even more epic. The instrumental art is a blast. There is no chaos or sound mash, because the band knows how to create fantastic compositions, which are honored with an impressive instrumental performance that conveys everything in detail with all its subtleties. Thanks also go to the first-class production.

Lively melodic energy

Anyone listening to the opener „To Withhold The Day“ will immediately recognize this flawless quality and fall in love with it. An incredibly lively melodic energy is unleashed on the drums. And then those awesome guitars! The fast-paced riffs are insane and the strong leads fly through the sound and epic solos are unleashed in the middle of it all. I would even go so far as to say that I have never heard a better lead guitar in Black Metal than here. MOONLIGHT SORCERY really have a very concise quality feature. All you have to do is listen to the instrumental track „The Moonlit Dance of the Twisted Jester’s Blood-soaked Rituals“. I’m not really into pure instrumental tracks, but this thing really impressed me. Awesome!

With their album „“Horned Lord Of The Throned Castle“, MOONLIGHT SORCERY have succeeded in creating a fantastic album. It reveals a great potential that is already incredibly impressive and represents a more than promising vision for further great musical works. You should definitely follow and support this band!

„In Coldest Embrace“

WALG

Two men from the Netherlands stand for WALG (Facebook/Bandcamp). And they create epic black metal. And they are damn busy, because after the album „II“ it only took them a year to release their album „III“.

WALG proceed with their usual vehemence. There is still this madness and anger in the vocals, which characterizes the sound. But that’s not all. They use subtle symphonic elements to give the sound even more depth. They also play with clean vocals in the form of sacred choirs from time to time. The songs are still a force to be reckoned with, a merciless storm in which melodic winds are unleashed and the mystical component is always blowing along somewhere. This is particularly evident in the song „Geselberg“, which opens with the sounds of a didgeridoo. As the song progresses, ritual chants can be heard in the background.

The album also features a mercilessly good cover version of the song „Mourning Palace“, which was originally composed by DIMMU BORGIR. It has to be said that the rough WALG guise suits the song incredibly well. A monumental interpretation and tribute to the original. The typical melodies of the original are clearly recognizable and the epic approach is impressively implemented, giving the song an extra dose of heaviness and madness. (Review)

„Geselberg“

CRAVING

CRAVING (Facebook) are a metal act from Germany that is difficult to pigeonhole, as their new album „Call Of The Sirens“ is very diverse. Due to the mostly extremely angry and martial sound, I put CRAVING in the Black Metal category. I can live with that and I hope you can too.

„Call Of The Sirens“ was the first single release and immediately had me under its spell. CRAVING imply a lot of heavy metal in their songs, which loosens up the whole musical violence and of course comes in very handy for the melodicism. Furthermore, CRAVING make epic moments come true. You can hear this in „Call Of The Sirens“ right from the extended introduction of the song with its crashing riffs. Together with the furious drums, the introduction is already very impressive. Then it gets down to business with the harsh vocals of Ivan Chertov. Ivan shows no mercy when he lets his energy run free. Every now and then, the outstanding choirs in the songs catch the ear. They always provide great moments in the otherwise rude, angry sound.

CRAVING have achieved a stroke of genius with „Call Of Sirens“. They have built on existing strengths and even added new ones to create a complex, mature musical work of art. CRAVING celebrate epic stories with a tremendous amount of energy and diversity of ideas and really let it rip. In doing so, CRAVING reveal a great deal of originality and wit. „Call Of Sirens“ has become heavier and this heaviness suits the sound very well, which is reflected above all in the first-class, powerful and detailed production. NIGHT CROWNED

I had expected a lot from NIGHT CROWNED (Facebook). Because with their predecessor „Hädanfärd“ (review) from 2021, they had already created a dark pearl of modern melodic Black metal and I gave them the highest score. So I was excited to see what new dark stories they would create. In fact, their new album is simply called „Tales“. And they managed to create my black metal album of the year 2023 with flying colors.

NIGHT CROWNED storm on with a flaming heart and brutal energy. What sets them apart is that their songs are full of fine details and skillfully explore the boundaries of the genre. The song structure remains brutally exciting and versatile at all times. It is just not only monotonously pure frenzy. NIGHT CROWNED is more. They let an epic melody and ochestral elements flow in, to then throw themselves again and again with full force into the thundering floods.

I also like the new folk approach that is already established in the second song „She Comes At Night“. A highly melodic experience with an atmospheric instrumentation that lets the Black Metal advance into other dimensions. The female vocals of guest vocalist Therése Thomsson further intensify the atmosphere of this impressive epic gem. 

NIGHT CROWNED create stories that describe an opulent ominous drama in dark epic splendor. The sound on „Tales“ has become even more orchestral and rich. The sound has improved even further. It creates a feeling of being part of a sinister monumental fantasy film. „Tales“ from NIGHT CROWNED is an action-heavy epic blockbuster and the perfect continuation of their journey. (Review)
