Ein aufgehender Stern im Metal-Kosmos

ORBIT CULTURE (Facebook) sind ein aufgehender Stern im Metal-Kosmos. Mit dem Album „Nija“ (Review) vom letzten Jahr haben sie ihr Leuchtfeuer noch mal richtig angeheizt. Und in diesem Jahr haben ORBIT CULTURE gleich noch mal die fette EP „Shaman“ (Review) nachgelegt. Die Band strotzt also nur so vor Energie und wenn es so weitergeht, dann werden ORBIT CULTURE bald zu einer Sonne werden. Sie wollen es definitiv wissen! Und ich denke, dass sie nicht aufzuhalten sind. Sie arbeiten hart und viel. Von daher habe ich mich besonders darüber gefreut, als Frontmann Niklas angeboten hat sich einigen Fragen von `metal-heads.de´ zu stellen. Und es ist ein fantastisches Interview geworden. Niklas hat sich sehr viel Zeit genommen, um die Fragen zu beantworten. Und wer meine Interviews kennt, der weiß, dass meine Interviews nicht gerade kurz sind.

Was hört man sonst so?

MH: Welches Lied von welcher Band hast du heute zuletzt gehört?

Niklas: Hmm, ich bin gerade vom Proberaum nach Hause gekommen und habe auf dem Heimweg im Auto eine Menge Sachen gespielt, aber ich glaube, es war eine Playlist mit einigen Iron Maiden- und Metallica-Songs. Vielleicht ‚The Trooper‘!

Workaholic?

MH: Nur ein Jahr nach „Nija“ habt ihr jetzt schon die neue EP „Shaman“ mit fünf Songs veröffentlicht. Würdest du dich selbst als Workaholic bezeichnen? (Bitte korrigiere mich, wenn ich mich falsch erinnere, aber du bist auch für den gesamten Produktionsprozess inklusive Mixing und Mastering verantwortlich, nicht wahr?).

Niklas: Haha, ich glaube, das stimmt! Ich denke aber, dass es auf eine gesunde Art und Weise ist. Wenn ich nicht produktiv bleibe, sei es mit Musik oder Visuals, werde ich ziemlich schnell verrückt und krieche überall herum. Was die Produktionsseite angeht, ja, das stimmt, ich bekomme jede Menge Hilfe von den Jungs und den Leuten um uns herum, wenn es um andere Bereiche geht, wie Planung, Zeitplanung, Videoideen und so weiter. Wir haben hier ein solides Team, zusammen mit der Band, dem Label und der Booking-Agentur.

MH: Bist du jemand, der sich selbst die alten Alben von ORBIT CULTURE anhört oder wirst du deiner eigenen Songs manchmal überdrüssig?

Niklas: Manchmal schon, einfach um zu sehen, was bei älteren Songs funktioniert hat und was nicht. Aber ja, wenn du schreibst, aufnimmst und abmischst, und die meiste Zeit die Musikvideos schneidest und so, dann... hörst du diese Songs tausendmal und es ist unmöglich, sie nach diesem Prozess zu mögen…nehme ich an, haha.

Glück oder harte Arbeit für den Erfolg?

MH: Wie schwer ist es heutzutage, sich als Band einen Namen zu machen oder gar von der Musik zu leben? Ist harte Arbeit genug oder spielen auch Glück und Zufall eine große Rolle? Ist das Musikgeschäft immer noch ein Haifischbecken?

Niklas: Es ist ziemlich hart! Wir hatten das Glück, dass über die Jahre immer mehr Leute auf unsere Musik aufmerksam geworden sind. Das ist erst seit zwei bis drei Jahren so und wir sind seit acht Jahren dabei. Aber auch wenn man manchmal Sachen macht, die am Anfang niemanden interessieren, war es einfach. Denn die Leidenschaft dafür immer so stark war, und ich bin irgendwie schlecht in allem anderen. Also ist das etwas, was ich tun muss, um meinen Kopf gerade zu halten, haha.
Also, ich glaube mehr an harte Arbeit als an Glück. Natürlich muss man auch etwas Glück haben, aber wenn man nicht hart genug arbeitet, spielt das Glück keine so große Rolle. Nicht in diesem Genre.

Wir haben in gewisser Weise beide Seiten des Musikgeschäfts gesehen, aber das Metal-Genre scheint im Vergleich zu anderen Genres in der Branche das Paradies zu sein, nach dem, was ich gesehen und gehört habe. Es gibt zwar immer noch Idioten in diesem Bereich, aber die meisten Leute hinter den Kulissen sind einfach nur entspannt und großartige Typen und Mädels, die Metal lieben.

Der Schritt mit dem Album „Nija“

MH: Kritiker und Fans lieben euch. Inwieweit hat euch das letzte Album „Nija“ weitergebracht? Seid ihr jetzt zufrieden und könnt ihr die Früchte eurer harten Arbeit genießen?

Niklas: Das Album hat viel für uns getan, SEHR viel. In Wirklichkeit war es das Ergebnis einer Kombination aus einem soliden Team, das sich für ein Album einsetzte. Und da waren eine Reihe von Songs, auf die wir endlich stolz waren. Zu sehen, dass das Album so gut ankommt, war eine wahre Freude und wir könnten nicht glücklicher sein. Das Album hat uns eine Menge Möglichkeiten eröffnet! Jetzt müssen wir nur noch rausgehen und uns diese Plätze auf Festivals und Touren und so verdienen. Das ist jetzt unser Hauptziel.

ORBIT CULTURE-Sound

MH: Bist du der Meinung, dass nach den Alben „Rasen“ und „Redfog“ ein großer Schritt in Bezug auf euren Sound gemacht wurde? Ich hatte den Eindruck, dass ihr mit „Nija“ euren eigenen ORBIT CULTURE SOUND geschaffen habt. Die neue EP „Shaman“ setzt diesen Sound fort und perfektioniert ihn noch ein wenig mehr. Habt ihr jetzt euren Sound gefunden?

Niklas: Das denke ich auch! Ich liebe die Idee, einen Sound zu haben, aber ich experimentiere auch gerne, das ist einfach etwas, das wir tun müssen. Natürlich werden wir uns nicht umdrehen und anfangen, Doom Metal oder so etwas zu machen, es wird immer Elemente geben, zu denen wir auch tendieren werden. Zum Beispiel die Growls, die cineastischen Sachen und solche Sachen. Ich liebe die Herausforderung, ‚Orbit‘ beizubehalten und gleichzeitig neue Dinge einzuführen.

Veränderungen gewünscht ?

MH: Oder könnt ihr plötzlich mit ganz neuen Ideen überraschen? Veränderungen werden von den Fans nicht immer gut aufgenommen. Wie siehst Du das? METALLICA zum Beispiel haben ihren Sound mehrmals verändert. Das schwarze Album war zum Beispiel eine völlig neue Erfahrung in ihrer Diskografie, und später folgten mehrere Alben, die wieder ein anderes Hörerlebnis boten. Das kam nicht bei allen (alten) Fans gut an.

Niklas: Ich denke, bestimmte Bands mit bestimmten Leuten müssen sich einfach von Zeit zu Zeit neu erfinden. Dies liegt einfach in ihrer DNA. Wir neigen nicht dazu, so viel darüber nachzudenken, wir schreiben und nehmen im Grunde nur das auf, was wir im Moment für cool halten, aber gleichzeitig versuchen wir uns immer daran zu erinnern, was wir früher cool fanden, was uns dazu gebracht hat, bestimmte Dinge überhaupt zu tun. Es ist im Grunde nur der Versuch, ein schnelles Auto auf einer rutschigen Straße zu steuern, ohne zu weit nach rechts oder links zu fahren. Aber das ist es, was das Adrenalin in Wallung bringt.

Der Egoismus in der Musik

Ich gehöre zu den Fans, die sich unwohl fühlen, wenn Bands, die ich mag, sich zu weit von dem entfernen, was mich dazu gebracht hat, sie zu lieben. Und das ist in gewisser Weise egoistisch. Ich verstehe auch sehr gut, warum Bands das tun, etwas immer und immer wieder zu machen, nimmt den Spaß daran. Wir alle haben Bands und Projekte gegründet, um Spaß zu haben und uns selbst zu unterhalten und zu beschäftigen. Das klingt egoistisch und das ist es auch, aber das ist Kunst. Die Arbeit von Künstlern wird immer von den Dingen geprägt sein, die sie in der Zeit, in der sie schreiben und aufnehmen, durchmachen, sowohl unbewusst als auch bewusst. Für mich fühlt sich das lebendig und schön an. Und ich kann immer zurückgehen und mir die Platte anhören, in die ich mich damals verliebt habe.

Beziehung „Nija“ und „Shaman“

MH: Wurden die Songs von „Shaman“ in der gleichen Zeit geschrieben wie die Songs von „Nija“?

Niklas: Was uns und ‚Shaman‘ und ‚Nija‘ betrifft, so wurden diese beiden Projekte so kurz nacheinander geschrieben, dass sie sich zwar unterscheiden, aber nicht so unterschiedlich sind. Es wurde fast im gleichen Jahr geschrieben, im gleichen Raum, mit der gleichen Gitarre. Die Zielrichtung war, dass wir es live-freundlicher machen wollten. Das war der einzige Gedanke dahinter, wenn man es mit unseren anderen Songs vergleicht. Und nächstes Jahr oder so, wenn wir das Gefühl haben, dass wir mehr Riffs und Songs im Stil von ‚Nija‘ oder vielleicht sogar ‚In Medias Res‘ wollen, werden wir das machen. Wenn es sich richtig anfühlt, werden wir versuchen, es zu machen, haha. Das ist das Schöne daran ist: Wir wissen nie etwas mit Sicherheit.

Die Kirchenorgel

MH: Die Songs auf „Shaman“ haben alle ihren eigenen Charakter. Es gibt einige besondere Dinge, die mich sehr beeindruckt haben. Da ist zum Beispiel die Kirchenorgel in dem Song „Mast Of The World“.
Wie kam es zu dieser Idee?

Niklas: Danke schön! Ich habe die Kirchenorgel sowohl bei ‚Nija‘ als auch bei ‚Redfog‘ und jetzt bei ‚Shaman‘ ziemlich oft verwendet. Sie ist einfach eines der Instrumente, zu denen ich greife, wenn ich nicht weiterkomme, haha. Es war also nur ein glücklicher Zufall, der es mir ermöglichte, den Song zu beenden.

MH: Lustigerweise musste ich an dieses Lied denken, als ich einen meiner seltenen Besuche in der Kirche machte, weil die Konfirmation meines Sohnes anstand. Dort musste ich an Ihr Lied denken, als dieses Stück auf der Kirchenorgel gespielt wurde.

Kennst Du diese Komposition von Johann Sebastian Bach? Woher kam die Inspiration, die Klänge einer Kirchenorgel in das Lied „Mast Of The World“ einzubauen?

Niklas: Haha, ja! Das habe ich gehört, und natürlich Johann Sebastian Bach. Ich glaube, es begann damit, dass ich Zimmers Einsatz der Orgel in „Interstellar“ und „Fluch der Karibik“ hörte, als das Davy-Jones-Thema gespielt wurde. Es ist einfach eines dieser Themen, die mich nicht mehr loslassen, seit ich es 2006 als Kind gehört habe. Zum Glück habe ich dieses großartige Sample-Pack gefunden, das eine Kirchenorgel einfängt, und jetzt ist es bei meinen Schreibprojekten immer einsatzbereit.

Die Dämonen

MH: In Eurer Musik herrscht oft eine dämonische Düsternis mit einer aufregenden Dramaturgie, die sich in einer gnadenlosen Grausamkeit entlädt. „Nija“ hat mit diesem Thema gespielt und auch „Shaman“ verströmt diese dunkle mystische Ader.
Gibt es Dämonen in Deinem Leben? Welche Kämpfe gibt es in Deinem Leben? Oder siehst Du die Dämonen eher in der Welt um uns herum?

Niklas: Wir haben alle eine dunkle Seite in uns! Ich habe gelernt, mit Zwangsstörungen, aufdringlichen Gedanken und den daraus resultierenden schweren Ängsten zu leben. Wenn man die erste Seite der Tagesnachrichten aufschlägt, sind es im Grunde nur Dämonen mit Meinungen, die über andere Dämonen schreiben, die schreckliche Dinge tun. Es gibt so viel dunkle Scheiße in dieser Welt, aber auch so viele schöne Dinge. Oft liegt es an einem selbst, wie man die Welt sehen will. Es ist scheinheilig von mir, weil ich oft die dunklere Richtung einschlage. Dabei habe ich das Gefühl habe, dass alles Scheiße ist, obwohl es das nicht ist. Aber ich möchte durch meine Texte die Leute inspirieren den Kopf hochzunehmen und vorwärts zu gehen, denn es ist auch eine schöne Welt.

Die Live-Brecher

MH: „Carvings“ und vor allem „Strangler“ (mit der kürzesten Spielzeit) sind die gnadenlosen Dampfhämmer des Albums und gehen kompromisslos hart zur Sache.
Sind das die typischen Songs, die sich besonders gut für Live-Auftritte eignen? Oder kommen die langen, komplizierteren Songs genauso gut an?

Niklas: Du hast völlig recht, diese beiden Songs wurden nur geschrieben, um in einer Live-Situation zu leben und zu atmen. Was die anderen angeht, so sind sie natürlich etwas schwieriger zu spielen als die anderen beiden, aber ich habe ein gutes Gefühl bei ‚Mast Of The World‘ und ‚A Sailor’s Tale‘, wenn wir auf die Bühnen gehen. Mast‘ hat diesen Drive, während ‚A Sailor’s Tale‘ (hoffentlich) einen eingängigen Refrain hat, auf den die Leute anspringen können.

Das cineastische „A Sailor´s Tale“

MH: In diesem Zusammenhang würde ich nämlich den letzten Song „A Sailor’s Tale“ ins Spiel bringen. Ein episches Meisterwerk von über sieben Minuten (der längste Song in der Geschichte), das eine Geschichte in einem filmischen Format erzählt.
Was hat Dich zu diesem Song inspiriert? Wird er eine Ausnahme bleiben oder können wir mehr davon erwarten? Wird er in die Live-Setlist aufgenommen?

Niklas: Ich danke Dir vielmals. Da wir alle in der Band Filme und Filmmusik so sehr lieben, dachten wir, es wäre cool, das einfach zu übernehmen, ohne zu viel darüber nachzudenken. Natürlich hatten wir das Gefühl, dass dieser Song ein echter Joker ist, den man entweder lieben oder hassen kann. Aber es hat sich richtig angefühlt, und das Publikum scheint sich darauf einzulassen, was großartig ist. Ich glaube, wir haben mehr erwartet, wir haben einfach das aufgenommen, was wir gerade für cool und gut halten, aber da unsere Liebe zu Filmmusik nicht verschwinden wird, solltest du dir keine Sorgen machen, haha.

Könnt Ihr auch ruhig?

MH: Du bist ein stimmliches Multitalent. „Rebirth“ war der erste Song, den ich von ORBIT CULTURE gehört habe. Ein Song, der mich mit seinem Höhepunkt überrascht hat. Erst melodisch, dann kraftvoll und am Ende direkt ins Gesicht. Worauf ich hinaus will, ist die Tatsache, dass ihr neben dem martialischen, brutalen, gutturalen Gesang auch mit einer beeindruckenden Clean-Stimme gesegnet seid. Deshalb haben mir auch die ruhigeren Phasen bei den Songs „Rebirth“ und „Beholder“ sehr gut gefallen.
Werden wir von ORBIT CULTURE jemals eine Ballade zu hören bekommen? Es gibt keine solchen Songs auf der neuen EP „Shaman“ oder dem letzten Album „Nija“. Oder braucht Ihr am Ende immer die durchschlagende Kraft?

Niklas: Ich will nicht lügen… Ich wollte schon immer mal eine Ballade machen. Aber es ist `Orbit´ und ich muss respektieren, dass ich nicht einfach eine Aerosmith-Ballade machen kann und den Bandnamen Orbit Culture darauf setzen kann, haha. Ich glaube, der Hauptgrund, warum es am Ende immer in den Overdrive geht, ist, dass es mich einfach langweilt, wenn langsame Sachen den ganzen Song einnehmen, haha.

Positive Einflüße?

MH: Was gibt dir positive Energie im Leben? Was sind Dinge, die dich inspirieren?

Niklas: Meine lieben Freunde und meine Familie. Essen gehen ist meine Lieblingsbeschäftigung, wenn ich nicht gerade Orbit Culture mache, haha. Ich glaube, alles, was im Leben passiert, inspiriert dich, sowohl auf positive als auch auf negative Weise. Das Schreiben von Musik, auch wenn es beschissene Musik ist, hält meinen Kopf oft frei.

MH: Was sind deine nächsten Pläne, vor allem in Bezug auf Live-Auftritte?

Niklas: Wir werden sehen, wie sich die Situation rund um die Pandemie entwickelt, aber ich denke, dass sich der Ball in Sachen Shows erst ab 2022 richtig drehen wird. Wir haben gerade unsere neue Booking-Agentur UTA bekannt gegeben, die eine große Bereicherung für unser kleines Team ist. Wir werden uns also ein paar Dinge überlegen und dann einfach loslegen.

MH: Die letzten Worte gehören Dir. Gibt es noch etwas, das du den Fans da draußen sagen möchtest? In dem Zuge möchte ich mich ganz herzlich für Deine ausführlichen und interessanten Antworten bedanken.

Vielen Dank, dass ich dabei sein durfte! Hört euch unbedingt unsere brandneue EP ‚Shaman‘ an, die bei Seek & Strike erschienen ist, und vergesst nicht, dass dies erst der Anfang ist. Der Motor ist gerade erst gestartet und wir können es kaum erwarten, euch alle auf der Straße zu sehen.

A rising star in the Metal cosmos

ORBIT CULTURE (Facebook) are a rising star in the Metal cosmos. With last year’s album „Nija“ (Review) they really stoked up their beacon. And this year ORBIT CULTURE followed it up with the awesome EP „Shaman“ (Review). The band is bursting with energy and if it continues like this, ORBIT CULTURE will become a burning sun soon.They definitely want to know it! And I think they are unstoppable. They work hard and a lot. So I was very happy when Niklas offered to answer some questions from ‚metal-heads.de‘. And it turned out to be a fantastic interview. Niklas took a lot of time to answer the questions. And who reads my interviews, knows that my interviews are not exactly short.

What else do you hear?

MH: Which song from which band did you listen to last today?

Niklas: Hmm, I just got home from the rehearsal space and I played a lot of stuff in the car on my way home, but I think it was a playlist of some Iron Maiden and Metallica songs. ‘The Trooper’ maybe!

Workaholic?

MH: Only one year after „Nija“ you have already released now the new EP „Shaman“ with five songs. Would you describe yourself as a workaholic? (Please correct me if I remember this wrong, but you are also responsible for the whole production process including mixing and mastering, aren’t you?).

Niklas: Haha, I believe so yes! I think it’s in a healthy way, though. If I’m not staying productive whether it be with music or visuals, I’m turning quite insane pretty fast, crawling all over the place. Regarding the production side of things, yes, that is correct, I get loads of help from the guys and people around us with stuff in other areas though, like with planning, scheduling, video ideas, and stuff. We got a solid team here, together with the band, label, and booking agency.

MH: Are you someone who listens to ORBIT CULTURE’s old albums yourself or do you ever get tired of your own songs?

Niklas: Sometimes I do, just to see what was working and what was not working on older songs. But yeah, when you write, record, and mix, and a lot of the time edit the music videos and stuff, you hear those songs a thousand times and it’s impossible to like them after that process, I suppose, haha.

Luck or hard work for success?

MH: How hard is it nowadays to make a name for yourself as a band or even to live from music? Is hard work enough or do luck and coincidence also play a big role? Is the music business still a shark tank?

Niklas: It’s pretty hard! We’ve been very lucky and fortunate to have more people getting into our music over the years now, it’s really only been that way for two to three years and we’ve been at it for eight years. But even though you sometimes make shit that no one cares about in the beginning, it’s been easy in that way that the passion for it has been so strong and full-on all the time, and I kind of suck at anything else, so this is something I must do to keep my head straight, haha.

So, I believe more in hard work than luck. You have to have some luck of course, but if you don’t work hard enough, luck does not matter so much. Not in this genre.

We’ve seen both sides of the music business in a sense, but the metal genre, compared to other genres in the business, ours seems to be heaven from what I’ve seen and heard. Still, there are idiots in this area, though, but the majority of people behind the scenes are just straight-up chill and awesome dudes and girls who love metal.

The step with the album „Nija

MH: Critics and fans love you. To what extent did the last album „Nija“ push you forward? Are you satisfied by now and can you start to enjoy the fruits of your hard work?

Niklas: That album has done a lot of things for us, A LOT. In reality, it was a result of a combination of having a solid team pushing for a record and a bunch of songs we were finally proud of. Seeing it being received so well has been a real treat and we couldn’t be happier. That album has given us a lot of opportunities, so now we just have to go out there and earn those spots on festivals and tours and stuff. That’s our main goal now.

The own ORBIT CULTURE-sound

MH: Do you think that after the albums „Rasen“ and „Redfog“ a big step was made regarding your sound? I had the impression that with „Nija“ you created your own ORBIT CULTURE SOUND, by which one recognizes you immediately. The new EP „Shaman“ continues this sound and perfects it a bit more. Have you found your sound now?

Niklas: I think so! I love the idea of having a sound, but I also like experimenting, it’s just something we have to do. Of course we’re not going to turn around and start doing doom metal or something like that, there will always be elements that we’ll tend towards as well. For example, the growls, the cinematic stuff and stuff like that. I love the challenge of keeping it ‘Orbit’ but at the same time introducing new things, it’s a fine balance, but it’s very exciting.

Changes wanted?

MH: As a band, do you always have to reinvent yourself to a certain extent, or should you not stray too far from the path you’ve chosen? Changes are not always well received by the fans. How do you see that? METALLICA, for example, have changed their sound several times. The black album, for example, was a completely new experience in their discography, and it was followed later by several albums that again offered a different listening experience. That didn’t go down well with all (old) fans.

Niklas: I think certain bands with certain people just have to reinvent themselves from time to time, it’s just in their DNA. We don’t tend to think so much about it really, we basically just write and record what we feel is cool at the moment, but at the same time, we always try to remember what we thought was cool before, what made us do certain things in the first place. It’s basically just trying to steer a fast car on a slippery road without going too far right or left, but that’s what’s gets the adrenaline going.

The egoism in music

I’m very much one of those fans who feels uneasy when bands I like go a bit too far from what made me love them in the first place, and that’s sort of selfish in a way. I also very much understand why bands do that! Creating something over and over again takes the fun out of it. We all started bands and projects really to have fun and keep ourselves entertained and engaged in the first place. It sounds selfish and it is, but that is art. Artists’ work will always be colored by the things that they go through in that space of time when they write and record it, both unconsciously and consciously. That for me feels alive and beautiful. And I can always go back and listen to that record that I fell in love within the first place.

Connection „Nija“ and „Shaman

MH: Were the songs of „Shaman“ written in the same period as the songs of „Nija“ were written?

Niklas: Regarding us, and ‘Shaman’ and ‘Nija’, those two projects were written so close to each other, so it’s different, but it’s not that different. It’s written almost in the same year, in the same room, with the same guitar, the main thing is we wanted it to be more live friendly. That was the only thought behind it comparing it to our other songs. And next year or so, if we feel like we want more ‘Nija’ or maybe even ‘In Medias Res’ styled riffs and songs, we’ll make that. If that feels right, we’ll try to do it, haha. That’s the beauty of it, we never know anything for certain.

The church organ

MH: The songs on „Shaman“ all have their own character. There are some special things that impressed me very much. There is for example the church organ in the song „Mast Of The World“.

How did this idea come up?

Niklas: Thank you! I’ve used the church organ quite a bit on both ‘Nija’ and ‘Redfog’ and now ‘Shaman’. It’s really just one of those tools I reach for when I get stuck, haha. So it was just a happy accident that made me be able to finish the song.

MH: Funnily enough, I had to think of this song when I made one of my rare visits to church because my son’s confirmation was coming up. There I had to think of your song when this piece was played on the church organ.

Do you know this composition by Johann Sebastian Bach? Where did the inspiration come from to include the sounds of a church organ in the song „Mast Of The World“?

Niklas: Haha, yes! I have heard that one and of course Johann Sebastian Bach. I think it started from hearing Zimmer’s use of the organ in ‘Interstellar’ and ‘Pirates Of The Caribbean’ when the Davy Jones theme plays. It’s just one of those themes that have stuck with me ever since I heard it back in 2006 when I was a kid. Luckily, I found this great sample pack capturing a church organ and now it’s always ready to go in my writing projects.

The demons

MH: There is often a demonic gloom in your music with an exciting dramaturgy that pours out in a merciless ferocity. „Nija“ played with this theme and „Shaman“ also exudes this dark mystical vein as well.

Are there demons in your life? What struggles are there in your life? Or do you see the demons more in the world around us?

Niklas: There’s dark shit in all of us. For me, it’s been learning to live with OCD, intrusive thoughts, and the severe anxiety that comes from that. If you open up the first page of the daily news, it’s basically just demons with opinions writing about other demons doing horrendous things. There’s so much dark shit in this world, but there’s so many beautiful things too. Oftentimes it’s down to yourself to decide how you want to see the world. It’s hypocritical of me because I often go down the darker route and feeling that everything’s shit when it’s really not. But through lyrics and stuff, I just want people that read them, and that feels the same to get your head up and move forward as it is a beautiful world too.

Live-Killers

MH: „Carvings“ and especially „Strangler“ (with the shortest playing time) are the merciless hammers of the album and go straight to the point uncompromisingly hard.

Are these the typical songs, which are particularly well suited for live performances? Or do the long more complicated songs go down just as well?

Niklas: You are very right, those two songs very written purely to live and breathe in a live setting. When it comes to the others, they are obviously a bit trickier to play compared to those other two, but I have a good feeling about both ‘Mast Of The World’ and ‘A Sailor’s Tale’ when we’ll be hitting the stages. ‘Mast’ got this pumping to it while ‘A Sailor’s Tale’ (hopefully) has a catchy chorus for people to jump on to.

The epic „A Sailor´s Tale“

MH: In this context, I would namely bring the last song „A Sailor’s Tale“ into play. An epic masterpiece of over seven minutes (longest song in history) that tells a fantastic story in a cinematic format.

What inspired you to write this song? Will it remain an exception or can we expect more of this kind in the future? Will it be included in the live setlist?

Niklas: Thank you so much. Since all of us in the band loves films and film scores so much, we just thought it would be cool to just embrace that without overthinking it too much. Of course, we felt like this song was a real wildcard, like you would either love it or hate it. But it felt right and the audience seems to get into that one quite well, which is awesome. I think we expect more, it just tied in what we think is cool and good at the time, but since our love for film scores won’t go away, you shouldn’t be worried, haha.

A Ballad from ORBIT CULTURE?

MH: You are a vocal all-rounder. „Rebirth“ was the first song I heard from ORBIT CULTURE. A song that surprised me with its climax. First melodic, then powerful and at the end straight in the face. What I’m getting at is the fact that besides the martial brutal guttural vocals, you are also blessed with an impressive clean voice. That’s why I really liked the quieter phases on the songs „Rebirth“ and „Beholder“.

Will we ever be able to hear a ballad from ORBIT CULTURE? There are no such songs on the new EP „Shaman“ or the last album „Nija“. In the end, do you always need the resounding power?

Niklas: I’ve always wanted to do a ballad, I’m not gonna lie. But, it’s `Orbit´ and I have to respect that I can’t just do an Aerosmith ballad and putting band name ORBIT CULTURE on it, haha. I think the main reason why it’s always going into overdrive, in the end, is that I’m just bored of slower stuff taking up the whole song, haha.

Positive energy

MH: What gives you positive energy in life? What are things that inspire you?

Niklas: My dear friends and family. Going out to dinner is like my favourite thing to do outside of doing Orbit Culture stuff, haha. I think everything that’s going on in life inspires you, both in a positive and negative way. Writing music, even if it’s shitty music, often keeps my head clear.

Plans and last words

MH: What are your next plans, especially regarding live performances?

Niklas: We’ll see what the situation surrounding the pandemic evolves into, but as we speak, I think the real ball when it comes to shows will start spinning in 2022 and forward. We just announced our new booking agency UTA which is a huge addition to our small team. So, we’ll figure some stuff out, and then just, let’s go.

MH: The last words belong to you. Is there anything else you would like to say to the fans out there? Thanks for your time and effort!

Überragender Melodic-Death-Metal

ORBIT CULTURE (Facebook ) lassen wieder von sich hören. Und wie! Nach dem letzten Album „Nija“ (Review ), welches in meiner persönlichen Bestenliste des Jahre 2020 landete, prügeln die Schweden uns wieder in ihrer ganz besonders martialischen Art und Weise einige Songs um die Ohren. Für ein ganzes Album hat es nicht gereicht, aber die neue EP „Shaman“ mit ihren 25 Minuten Spielzeit ist schon eine ordentliche Ansage und für einen Snack zwischendurch mehr als nur laues Fast Food. E ist vielmehr ne ganz scharfe Mahlzeit. Und welche Band haut schon ein Jahr später noch ein ganzes Album raus? Also sollten wir sehr glücklich mit diesem Output sein, mit dem die meisten wahrscheinlich ohnehin nicht gerechnet hätten. Ich bin jedenfalls wieder einmal völlig geflasht!

Typisch ORBIT CULTURE

Ich bin der Meinung, dass ORBIT CULTURE ihren ganz eigenen Sound gefunden und somit eindeutig einen Wiedererkennungswert geschaffen haben. Man hebt sich mit dem Sound deutlich von der Masse ab! Und die neue EP „Shaman“ ist die Fortsetzung des letzten Albums „Nija“, welches bei mir schon mächtig eingeschlagen hat.

Monumental brutal

kämpfen sich ORBIT CULTURE mit der gewohnten Unerbittlichkeit ihren Weg frei. Sie haben rein nichts von ihrer Energie und Brutalität verloren. Ganz im Gegenteil… Sie setzen ihren Weg konsequent fort und schmettern uns in martialischer Manier ihre Songs in die Ohren. Die Single „Flight Of The Fireflies“ glänzt dabei mit einem tollen epischen Chorus, der das Metalherz bis zum bersten aufpumpt.

Eine hochwertige Mischung

aus schonungsloser Prügelei und einer verdammt kraftvollen melodischen Power führt zu einer einzigartigen extremen Erfahrung. Man höre sich den epischen Abschlusstrack „A Sailors Tale“ an und man kann gar nicht anders als vor Ehrfurcht niederknien und diesem genialen Sound huldigen. Allein diese Entwicklung des Songs von den anfangs einleitenden Cellos, über die fulminante Überleitung zu dem treibenden brutalen Part bis hin zu dem heroischen Chorus, kann man nur als genial bezeichnen. Der Song ist eine Offenbarung!

Den gnadenlosen Dampfhammer

holen ORBIT CULTURE mit den Songs „Carvings“ und „Strangler“ hervor. Hier wird hemmungslos Druck gemacht und es wird straight nach vorne marschiert. Die Songs pushen ohne Ende und dulden keine Pause. Eine absolute Kampfansage!

„Mast Of The World“

ist er Opener der treibenden Hetzjagd, auf den ich hier zum Ende noch mal eingehen möchte. Es ist ein mit Blastbeat-Attacken gespickter Midtempo-Brecher. Das variable furiose Drumming ist eines der typischen Merkmale, die ORBIT CULTURE auszeichnen. Was aber speziell den Song „Mast Of The World“ auszeichnet, sind die Klänge einer gewaltigen Kirchenorgel, welche zum Ende sogar gemeinsam mit den Klängen von einem Cello eine eindrucksvolle atmosphärische Sequenz bilden. Leider gibt es zu dem Song kein Video. Also müsst Ihr Eure Neugierde diesbezüglich bis zur Veröffentlichung ein wenig zügeln. Dazu habe ich…

…eine kleine persönliche Anekdote.

Ich war aufgrund der Konfirmation meines Sohnes tatsächlich mal in der Kirche. Ja ich weiß…. Normalerweise Langeweile ohne Ende. Und was haben ORBIT CULTURE mit Kirche zu tun? Aber tatsächlich haben mich zwei Dinge an diesem Gottesdienst begeistert. Zum einen hat eine professionelle Violinistin diesen Gottesdienst mit ihrem Spiel bereichert. Eine ganz tolle Erfahrung. Zum anderen hat die Organistin zum Abschluss mal richtig in die Orgeltasten gehauen und uns von Johann Sebastian Bach die Komposition „Toccata and Fugue in D Minor“ in die Ohren fahren lassen. Ich war hin und weg von diesem Sound und habe tatsächlich direkt ORBIT CULTURE gedacht. Falls niemand weiß, wovon ich rede, der sollte sich wenigstens die ersten zwei Minuten des folgenden Stücks anhören.

Fazit

ORBIT CULTURE bieten nach wie vor monumentalen brachialen Melodic-Death-Metal, der in seiner Art einzigartig ist. Ich habe das Album „Nija“ letztes Jahr mit 10 Punkten bewertet und ORBIT CULTURE reiten weiter ganz oben auf der Monsterwelle. Die Männer geben sich keine Blöße und bieten ein wahres Fest von Killersongs, die dermaßen scheppern, dass einem schwindelig wird.

Perfekt ausgearbeitete Songs bahnen sich ihren Weg. Der Sound ist wie gehabt kompromisslos hart. Das charakteristische monstermäßige Drumming und der geile Gesang sind unvergleichlich. Das gesamte auditive Gesamtkonzept bieten ein fantastisches Hörerlebnis. Das ist nicht einfach nur stumpfe Power ohne Sinn und Verstand, sondern eine geschickte soundtechnische Kriegsführung, die keinen Widerstand duldet und Euer Herz im Sturm erobert. Für mich aktuell eine der besten Bands!

Etwas hätte ich aber noch….

Und so sehr ich den Sound von ORBIT CULTURE liebe und schätze, so wünschte ich mir doch, dass die großartige cleane Stimme von Sänger Niklas ab und zu mehr Raum bekommen würde und nicht nur beim kraftvoll geschmetterten Chorus. Die Growls sind ohne Zweifel erste Sahne, aber auch gerade die cleane Voice hat ein wunderbar charakteristisches Klangbild. Ich erinnere mich an den Song „Rebirth“ vom letzten Album „Nija“. Dies war auch der erste Song, den ich von ORBIT CULTURE zu hören bekam. Diese irre geile Stimme im anfänglich ruhigen Part des Songs hatte mich voll abgeholt. Noch eine Kostprobe von der etwas gefühlvolleren Seite gab es beim Song „Behold“.

Aber es ändert nichts an der Tatsache, dass die EP „Shaman“ ein wahrer Killer ist. ORBIT CULTURE liefern wieder volle Granate ab.

English Review

Outstanding melodic death metal

ORBIT CULTURE (Facebook ) let us hear from them again. And how! After the last album „Nija“ (Review), which landed in my personal best list of 2020, the Swedes beat us again in their very special martial way some songs around the ears. It was not enough for a whole album, but the new EP „Shaman“ with its 25 minutes playing time is already a decent announcement and for a snack in between more than just lukewarm fast food, but rather a quite spicy meal. And which band releases a whole album already one year later? So we should be very happy with this output, which most people probably wouldn’t have expected anyway. In any case, I’m totally blown away!

Typical ORBIT CULTURE

I am of the opinion that ORBIT CULTURE have found their very own sound and have thus clearly created a recognition value. They stand out with the sound clearly from the masses! And the new EP „Shaman“ is the continuation of the last album „Nija“, which already had a powerful impact on me.

Monumental brutal

ORBIT CULTURE fight their way free with their usual relentlessness. They have lost nothing of their energy and brutality. Quite the opposite… They continue their way consequently and blast their songs into our ears in a martial manner. The single „Flight Of The Fireflies“ shines with a great epic chorus, which pumps up the metal heart to bursting.

A high quality mixture

of relentless thrashing and a damn powerful melodic power leads to a unique extreme experience. Listen to the epic closing track „A Sailors Tale“ and you can’t help but kneel in awe and pay homage to this ingenious sound. Just this evolution of the song from the initial introductory cellos, to the brilliant transition to the driving brutal part and the heroic chorus, can only be described as genius. The song is a revelation!

The merciless hammer

ORBIT CULTURE bring out with the songs „Carvings“ and „Strangler“. Here the pressure is put on mercilessly and the band marches straight forward. The songs push without end and don’t tolerate a break. An absolute declaration of war!

„Mast Of The World“

is the opener of the driving chase, which I would like to mention here at the end. It is a midtempo crusher peppered with blastbeat attacks. The variable furious drumming is one of the typical features that distinguish ORBIT CULTURE. But what especially distinguishes the song „Mast Of The World“ are the sounds of a huge church organ, which even form an impressive atmospheric sequence together with the sounds of a cello at the end. Unfortunately there is no video for the song. So you have to curb your curiosity a little bit until the release. For this I have…

A little anecdote

on the subject of the church organ. I was after a long time once again in the church due to the confirmation of my son. Yes I know…. Normally boredom without end. But actually two things excited me. First, a professional violinist enriched this worship with her playing. A very great experience. On the other hand, the organist really hit the organ keys and let the piece „Toccata and Fugue in D Minor“ by Johann Sebastian Bach hit my ears. I was blown away by this sound and actually thought directly of the song by ORBIT CULTURE. If no one knows what I’m talking about, they should at least listen to the first two minutes of the following track before continuing with ORBIT CULTURE. Maybe it will increase your curiosity a little bit for what is to come.

Conclusion

ORBIT CULTURE offers monumental brute Melodic-Death-Metal, which is unique in its kind. I rated the album „Nija“ last year with 10 points and ORBIT CULTURE continue to ride on top of the monster wave. The men show no mercy and offer a true feast of killer songs that rattle so much that it makes you dizzy.

Perfectly crafted songs pave their way. The sound is as usual uncompromisingly hard. The characteristic monster drumming and the awesome vocals are incomparable. The entire overall auditory concept offer a fantastic listening experience. This is not just blunt power without sense and reason, but a skillful sound warfare that tolerates no resistance and takes your heart by storm.

ORBIT CULTURE nailed it. For me currently one of the best bands ever!

But I still have something…

as much as I love and appreciate the sound of ORBIT CULTURE, I wish that the clean voice of singer Niklas would get more space now and then and not only during the powerfully smashing chorus. The growls are without a doubt first class, but also just the clean voice has a wonderfully characteristic sound. I remember the song „Rebirth“ from the last album „Nija“. This was also the first song I got to hear from ORBIT CULTURE. That crazy awesome voice in the initial quiet part of the song had me totally picked up. Another taste of the more soulful side was the song „Behold“. But it doesn’t change the fact that

the EP „Shaman“ is a real killer.

Massive powerful show!

The Swedes ORBIT CULTURE have been in the business for a long time now and blow the listeners‘ ears with high quality Melodic-Death-Metal. Especially the voice of singer Niklas Karlsson is noticeable, which sometimes reminds of James Hetfield. But in the end it is Niklas Karlsson himself who inspires with his own kind of singing. The change between clean vocals and dark growls he manages effortlessly. The last two albums „Rasen“ (2016) and „Redfog“ (2018) were already real firecrackers and now with „Nija“ the next hit follows… and what a hit!

Bloodcurdling

the sound goes into the limbs. The songs break through massively and powerfully. You could get an idea of this in advance. A total of four songs/videos were released, which made me get more and more impatient. First of all there are the videos of „Nensha“, „Rebirth“ and „The Shadowing“, which are meant to be a coherent trilogy. All videos could be admired here at „metal-heads.de“. If you haven’t done so yet, you should do it here as soon as possible. Then quite up-to-date the video „Open Eye“ was presented shortly before the release. The videos allow no other conclusion than that ORBIT CULTURE created

a dark and threatening world,

which also has epic features. The opener „At The Front“ pulls the listener accordingly radically into the world of „Nija“. Drum thunderstorms of the very finest explode in the head and Niklas joins in and roars his lyrics mercilessly around the listener’s ears. Rock-hard riffs and a fat bass additionally spur the sound vehemently. The very densely knitted sound construction is concise for the sound, which is smashed against you intensively throughout. „At The Front“ washes the earcups at a brisk pace and you are obsessed by this brilliant sound. Not less violently it goes on with

„North Star Of Nija“

The speed is slowed down at first, but this doesn’t stop the powerful power in any way. A true monster song, which changes wonderfully between growls and clean vocals with almost great transitions into the brilliant melodic chorus, which conveys epic feeling. The song builds up more and more energy in between, until it finally rushes forward with pure violence under constant drumfire. Niklas also vocally whips the song forward with incredible vehemence. After that you are completely flattened.

you search the album almost in vain. The album seems to be made of one damn hard cast and follows a recognizable uncompromising line. The songs are provided with various ingredients, which make the whole thing appear very diversified and entertaining. For example, the listeners experience more quiet spiritual passages from time to time, as it happens e.g. with the song „Day Of The Cloud“ from minute 03:00. Niklas is versatile with his voice, even if you only rarely experience him with a very calm singing interlude, as for example in the ballad

„Behold“

The word „ballad“ is only partly true here. In the beginning you may enjoy the beautiful clean voice of the singer, which flatters the ears with very tender and pleasing melodies and is accompanied by graceful clean guitars… well… at least for a while. The whole thing lasts about 50 seconds and the initial contemplative silence comes to an abrupt end. Gigantic guitar leads and fat drums screw up the energy level. So the cuddle factor is not very high. From minute 03:20 on the whole thing is done anyway and and ORBIT CULTURE beat the soul out of you. Who would have expected that after the very reserved beginning? ORBIT CULTURE have

an incredible amount of energy,

which cannot be tamed for long and simply has to get out. The drummer can also be described as outstanding, who does a damn demanding job and fires up the sound with an immense dominance and variance. It sounds as if the devil himself is beating his demonic skins with drumsticks like clubs. In combination with the bass and guitars the pressure is built up and Niklas crowns the whole thing with his insane presence. Despite its uncanny power, the sound is worked out with great attention to detail. These skilful changes and twists in the instrumental and vocal parts are already crazy. You don’t necessarily perceive all this diversity at first hearing, because you are literally carried away and overwhelmed by the sound.

Conclusion

The album „Nija“ is a powerful hammer. For me it is a similar milestone as the black album of METALLICA, only much harder oriented to the pulse of time. If ORBIT CULTURE doesn’t make the final breakthrough with it, then I don’t know what to do. With the album „Nija“ they show even more fire, explosiveness and creativity. With it ORBIT CULTURE shoots into the absolute top class of Melodic-Death-Metal. In any case, there is more than enough potential for further outstanding albums. The Swedes have by no means got stuck, but have pulled off a truly magnificent liberation coup. „Nija“ feels like a participation in a moshpit with the demons of hell. You can’t help but appreciate such an album with the full score, no matter what may come in the future.

Massiver gewaltiger Auftritt!

Die Schweden ORBIT CULTURE sind schon länger im Geschäft und ballern der Hörerschaft hochwertigen Melodic-Death-Metal um die Ohren. Dabei fällt besonders die Stimme von Sänger Niklas Karlsson auf, die manchmal an James Hetfield erinnert. Aber letztlich ist es einfach Niklas Karlsson himself, der mit seiner eigenen Art der Sangeskunst begeistert. Den Wechsel zwischen cleanen Vocals und dunklen Growls gelingt ihm mühelos. Die beiden letzten Alben „Rasen“ (2016) und „Redfog“ (2018) waren bereits richtiger Kracher und nun folgt mit „Nija“ der nächste Schlag…. und was für einer!

Markerschütternd

fährt der Sound in die Glieder. Massiv und gewaltig brechen die Songs durch. Davon konnte man sich bereits im Vorfeld ein Bild machen. Insgesamt vier Songs/Videos wurden veröffentlicht, die mich immer ungeduldiger werden ließen. Da waren zunächst die als zusammenhängende Trilogie gedachten Videos von „Nensha“, „Rebirth“ und „The Shadowing“. Alle Videos konnten hier bei „metal-heads.de“ bestaunt werden. Wer das noch nicht getan hat, der sollte dies schnellstens hier nachholen. Dann ganz aktuell wurde kurz vor dem Albumrelease das Video „Open Eye“ präsentiert. Die Videos lassen keinen anderen Schluss zu, als dass ORBIT CULTURE

eine düstere und bedrohliche Welt

erschaffen haben, die auch epische Klanglandschaften zu bieten hat. Der Opener „At The Front“ reißt den Hörer dementsprechend drastisch in die Welt von „Nija“. Trommelgewitter vom allerfeinsten explodieren im Kopf und Niklas growlt sich dazu passend brutal in die Gehörgänge. Steinharte Riffs und ein fetter Bass stacheln den Sound zusätzlich kräftig an. Prägnant für den Sound ist das sehr dicht gestrickte Soundkonstrukt, welches einem durchweg intensiv entgegengeschmettert wird. „At The Front“ spült die Hörmuscheln schon mal in flottem Tempo gut durch und man ist direkt besessen von diesem fulminanten Sound. Nicht weniger heftig geht es mit…

„North Star Of Nija“

weiter. Das Tempo wird zunächst gedrosselt, was der mächtigen Power aber keinerlei Abbruch beschert. Ein wahrer Monstersong, der wunderbar zwischen Growls und cleanem Gesang wechselt mit geradezu großartigen Übergängen in den genialen melodischen Refrain, der episches Feeling vermittelt. Der Song baut zwischendurch immer weiter Energie auf, bis dieser schließlich mit purer Gewalt unter Trommeldauerfeuer unaufhaltsam nach vorne prescht. Niklas peitscht den Song zusätzlich stimmlich mit einer unglaublichen Vehemenz nach vorne. Hiernach ist man erst mal völlig geplättet.

Erholung

sucht man auf dem Album fast vergebens. Das Album wirkt soundtechnisch wie aus einem verdammt harten Guss und fährt eine erkennbar kompromisslose Linie. Dabei sind die Songs mit diversen Zutaten versehen, die das Ganze sehr abwechslungsreich und kurzweilig erscheinen lassen. Beispielsweise durchleben die Hörer zwischendurch immer mal wieder ruhigere spirituelle Passagen, so wie es z.B. bei dem Song „Day Of The Cloud“ ab Minute 03:00 passiert. Der Sänger ist mit seiner Stimme vielseitig unterwegs, auch wenn man ihn nur selten mit einer ganz ruhigen Gesangseinlage erlebt, wie z.B. bei der „Ballade“

„Behold“.

Das Wort „Ballade“ stimmt hier nur zum Teil. Anfangs darf man sich zwar an der schönen cleanen Stimme von Niklas erfreuen, die mit sehr zarten und gefälligen Melodien den Ohren schmeichelt und von anmutigen cleanen Gitarren begleitet wird…. nun ja… zumindest ein Zeit lang. Das Ganze hält sich knappe 50 Sekunden und die anfängliche beschauliche Ruhe findet eine jähes Ende. Gigantische Gitarrenleads und fette Drums schrauben den Energielevel nach oben. Der Kuschelfaktor ist also nicht sonderlich hoch. Ab Minute 03:20 hat sich das ganze dann ohnehin voll und ganz erledigt und es gibt volle Kanne in die Fresse. Wer hätte das nach dem doch sehr zurückhaltenden Beginn erwartet? Bei ORBIT CULTURE ist eben

ungeheuerlicher Druck im Kessel,

der sich nicht lange bändigen lässt und einfach raus muss. Als herausragend ist auch der Drummer Christopher Wallerstedt zu bezeichnen, der verdammt anspruchsvolle Arbeit abliefert und mit einer immensen Dominanz und Varianz den Sound befeuert. Es hört sich an als ob der Leibhaftige selbst seine dämonischen Felle mit Schlagstöcken wie Keulen prügeln würde. Im Zusammenspiel mit dem Bass und den Gitarren wird hier unheimlich Druck aufgebaut und der Sänger krönt das Ganze mit seiner wahnsinnigen Präsenz. Es ist so, dass der Sound trotz seiner unheimlichen Wucht detailverliebt ausgearbeitet ist. Diese geschickten Wandlungen und Wendungen im instrumentalen Bereich und im Gesang sind schon irre. Diese gesamte Mannigfaltigkeit nimmt man nicht unbedingt gleich beim ersten Hören wahr, weil man zunächst von dem Sound förmlich mitgerissen wird und schier überwältigt ist.

Fazit

Das Album „Nija“ ist ein mächtiger Hammer. Es ist für mich ein ähnlicher Meilenstein wie das black Album von METALLICA seinerzeit, nur sehr viel härter orientiert am Puls der Zeit. Wenn ORBIT CULTURE damit nicht der endgültige Durchbruch gelingt, dann weiß ich auch nicht mehr weiter. Mit dem Album „Nija“ zeigt man noch mal mehr Feuer, Explosivität und Kreativität. Damit schießt ORBIT CULTURE in die absolute Königsklasse des Melodic-Death-Metal. Potential für weitere herausragende Alben ist jedenfalls mehr als ausreichend vorhanden. Die Schweden haben sich keineswegs festgefahren, sondern haben einen wahren großartigen Befreiungsschlag hingelegt. „Nija“ ist gefühlt wie eine Teilnahme im Moshpit mit den Dämonen der Hölle. Man kann ein solches Album nicht anders als mit der vollen Punktzahl würdigen, egal was zukünftig noch kommen mag.
