THE DEVILS überraschen mich mit ihrem neuen Album „Devil‘s Got It“, denn es ist erst ein Jahr her, als ich das letzte Album „Let The World Burn Down“ rezensierte (Review). Mit dieser Überraschung kann ich sehr gut leben, denn von THE DEVILS bekomme ich nicht genug. Es ist die puristische Art, welche mich unheimlich fasziniert. Kein Schnickschnack, sondern nur zwei Musiker und ihre Instrumente sind die Show.

Obwohl wir nie wirklich Blues- oder Soul-Musik gespielt haben, haben wir Jahre damit verbracht, diese Genres zu erforschen und zu verfolgen. Wir haben uns mit ihren Wurzeln beschäftigt und unzählige musikalische Einflüsse aufgenommen. Da wir unser 10-jähriges Jubiläum feiern, fühlt es sich passend an, diese Platte als Hommage an die Musik zu erstellen, die zu unserer unerschütterlichen Inspiration geworden ist und auf die wir uns wirklich verlassen können.

Die Essenz des Rock ’n‘ Roll

So habe ich die Musik von THE DEVILS das letzte Mal beschrieben . Und diese Essenz ist nun auch wieder der Nährboden, auf dem die Songs von THE DEVILS entstehen. Man bleibt dem rohen ungeschliffenen Sound treu. Und das ist genau richtig so, denn es macht den Sound nicht nur wahnsinnig authentisch, sondern auch verdammt sexy.

Nach dem lässig groovigen Einstieg mit „God’s Got It“ wird es verdammt sinnlich, sobald der zweite Song „Come Love“ aus den Boxen schallt. Ein sehr simpel gehaltener, dafür aber mit einer sehr verführerischen Ader, der seine besondere Würze durch den Einsatz einer Mundharmonika bekommt. Sehr lässig und einfach nur geil! Mein Lieblingssong auf dem Album!

Die Coolness tropft aus jeder Pore in den Songs von THE DEVILS. „Lonely For You Baby“ hat schon fast etwas beschwörendes in sich.

Beim Vorgängeralbum ging es recht wild zur Sache. Die neuen Songs sind da zurückhaltender und wirbeln nicht ganz so heftig. Es sind eher die lässig langsamen Songs, die hier ein dreckiges Rock ’n‘ Roll Miteinander feiern. So ist auch der Song „Help Me Through The Day“ eine melancholisch schleppende Angelegenheit.

Doch Songs wie „That’s The Way To Get Along“ liefern wieder mehr Energie oder auch das treibende „Shade Tree Mechanic“ treibt den Puls wieder nach oben. So ist „Devil’s Got It“ insgesamt wieder ein äußerst charismatisches Album geworden, dass nicht authentischer und ehrlicher klingen könnte. Insgesamt fehlt mir ein wenig die Wildheit vom Vorgängeralbum, aber trotzdem ist es mal wieder ein Genuß von vorne bis hinten.

THE DEVILS surprise me with their new album „Devil’s Got It“, because it’s only been a year since I reviewed their last album „Let The World Burn Down“ (review). I can live with this surprise, because I can’t get enough of THE DEVILS. It’s their purist style that fascinates me so much. No frills, just two musicians and their instruments are the show.

Although we’ve never really played blues or soul music, we’ve spent years exploring and pursuing these genres. We’ve delved into their roots and absorbed countless musical influences. As we celebrate our 10th anniversary, it feels fitting to create this record as a tribute to the music
that has become our steadfast inspiration and something we can truly rely on.

The essence of rock ’n‘ roll

That’s how I described the music of THE DEVILS last time. And this essence is now once again the breeding ground on which THE DEVILS‘ songs are created. They remain true to their raw, unpolished sound. And that’s exactly right, because it not only makes the sound incredibly authentic, but also damn sexy.

After the casually groovy start with „God’s Got It“, things get damn sensual as soon as the second song „Come Love“ comes out of the speakers. A very simple song, but with a very seductive vein, which gets its special spice from a mouth organ. Awesome! My favorite song on the album!

The coolness drips out of every pore in THE DEVILS‘ songs. „Lonely For You Baby“ almost has something evocative about it.

The previous album was quite wild. The new songs are more restrained and don’t whirl quite so energetically. It’s more the casually slow songs that celebrate a dirty rock ’n‘ roll togetherness here. The song “Help Me Through The Day”, for example, is a melancholy, sluggish affair.

But songs like „That’s The Way To Get Along“ provide more energy again and the driving „Shade Tree Mechanic“ gets the pulse racing. All in all, „Devil’s Got It“ has once again become an extremely charismatic album that couldn’t sound more authentic and honest. All in all, for me it lacks a little of the wildness of the previous album, but it’s still a pleasure from front to back.

Es ist mal wieder so weit! Ein weiteres Jahr neigt sich dem Ende. Es gibt so viel geiles Zeug auch abseits der ganz großen bekannten Bands! Es ist unmöglich dabei den vollen Durchblick zu behalten. Im Großen und Ganzen bin ich aber froh, dass die Szene so lebendig und vielfältig ist. Wir von ‚metal-heads.de‘ sind vor allem auch ein Magazin für den Underground. Wenn man nur die Bands berücksichtigen würde, die mehr als 500.000 oder mehr Follower haben, dann bestünde wohl die Möglichkeit, dass man einen gewissen Überblick behalten kann. Doch wir sind der Meinung, dass viele extrem gute Bands damit nicht berücksichtigt werden würden. Die Masse an Veröffentlichungen bedingt natürlich, dass man nicht alle Veröffentlichungen auf dem Schirm haben kann.

Daher kann man sicherlich über Sinn und Unsinn solcher Toplisten vortrefflich streiten. Deshalb nehmt diese Liste als das, was sie ist. Auf meinen ganz persönlichen Geschmack gründende Empfehlungen! Nehmt es als Anregung euch die Alben anzuhören. Seht euch andere Listen an und entscheidet dann selbst, welche Bands euch am meisten begeistern und vielleicht entdeckt ihr dabei noch ein paar neue Bands. Ich möchte dann mal mit der Kategorie ROCK beginnen. In dieser Kategorie gab es dieses Jahr viel starke Veröffentlichungen, die mit ganz unterschiedlichen Sounds zu begeistern wussten. Hier ist eine kleine Auswahl, welche die vielfältige Bandbreite gut verdeutlicht.

VIOLET „Mysteria“

Wer auf die 80’er Jahre Poprocksounds steht, der kommt an dem Album „Mysteria“ von VIOLET nicht vorbei. Mit einem guten Gespür für tolle Harmonien und mit einem starken Verständnis für das Feeling der 80’er Jahre setzen sie den Hörer in eine Zeitmaschine und katapultieren ihn in diese Zeit, in der man mit den Songs von VIOLET wunderbar verweilen kann. Absolut authentische Musik von VIOLET, welche mit einer starken kreativen Ader das Feeling für die 80’er Jahre zu 100 % rüberbringen. (Review)

STEPFATHER FRED „Rubicon“

STEPFATHER FRED haben es einfach drauf. Ich liebe ihre musikalische Interpretation, die einen ganz eigenen Charakter hat und einen sehr hohen Wiedererkennungswert besitzt. Schmutzig harter Rock, der auch mal mit dem Metal liebäugelt und sich auch mit gefühlvollen Passagen versteht ohne „weich“ zu klingen. Auf ihrem neuen Album „Rubicon“ nutzen sie gekonnt all ihre Stärken und hauen wieder einmal astreine Kracher raus, die mal mit kreativen Ideen begeistern, aber auch mal einfach geradeaus rocken. So wird das Album „Rubicon“ zu einem fulminanten Rockevent mit einem durchweg guten Punch. (Review)

The Devils „Let The World Burn Down“

Beginnen möchte ich mit dem italienischen Rockduo THE DEVILS, die mit ihrem Album „Let The World Burn Down“ gleich zum kalten Beginn des Jahres für eine heiße Überraschung gesorgt haben. THE DEVILS haben mit „Let The World Burn Down“ etwas ganz besonderes erschaffen. Es ist die Essenz von Rock ’n‘ Roll in ihrer reinsten Form. Der Sound besinnt sich auf die Grundelemente und ist dabei so verdammt schmutzig und sexy, dass es durchweg pure Freude bereitet das Album wieder und wieder zu hören. Denn mit knapp über 30 Minuten ist es zwar sehr kurz, aber es macht süchtig, so dass man es sowieso etliche Male in Dauerschleife hören wird. (Review)

RAVENSTINE „2024“

RAVENSTINE zeigen auf ihrem Album „2024“ neue Facetten ihrer tollen Rockmusik. Es ist nicht so fordernd und forsch wie das Debüt, kann aber trotzdem auf ganzer Linie überzeugen. Es unterstreicht vortrefflich die kreative Ader von RAVENSTINE. Die Songs sind schön mit viel Liebe zum Detail ausgearbeitet und zeigen handwerkliche Kunst, die sich in vielen melodischen Feinheiten manifestiert. Viele der Songs machen es sich mit ihren eingängigen Refrains sofort dauerhaft im Kopf gemütlich. Darüber hinaus ist die Produktion übrigens wahnsinnig gut geworden, denn der Sound klingt fantastisch. (Review)

MAVERICK – „Silver Tongue“ 

Mit „Silver Tongue“ haben MAVERICK eine Glanzleistung vollbracht. Neben echt coolen mitreißenden melodischen Rocknummern können MARVERICK auch mit einigen süßen Zuckerstückchen in Form von einfühlsamen und gleichzeitig kraftvollen Balladen glänzen. Für mich hätte es ruhig hier und da noch eine Spur schärfer und schmutziger klingen können wie beim Song „Daywalker“, aber auch so sind die Songs insgesamt echt geile Kracher und wunderbar anzuhören. Somit eine ganz klare Empfehlung für das Album „Silver Tongue“ von MAVERICK. (Review)

THE PINPRICKS „This Stuff Is Poison“

Mit dem Album „This Stuff Is Poison“ zünden THE PINPRICKS ein knalliges Feuerwerk ab. Mit ihrer frechen, unverblümten Art Songs zu präsentieren sorgen sie für astreine Unterhaltung. Die Songs auf dem Album sind individuell gestaltet und haben jeweils ihre eigene Handschrift. Das sorgt für Frische und Kurzweiligkeit. Die Spielzeiten der Songs sind knackig kurz, eben hart auf den Punk(t) gebracht. THE PINPRICKS werfen alle hochprozentigen Zutaten des Rock in den Mixer und produzieren so immer wieder schmackhafte berauschende musikalische Rockshots. (Review)

SWEET ELECTRIC „The Monster Are Rising“

SWEET ELECTRIC feiern eine wilde Rockparty auf ihrem Debüt „The Monsters Are Rising“. Es ist eine inspirierende und mitreißende Verrücktheit, die durch die Band musikalisch genial transportiert und ausgedrückt wird. So hat man einen Riesenspaß beim Hören. Es wimmelt nur so von vielfältigen mitreißenden Songs, die allesamt jeglichen Trübsal wegblasen. Live wird das Ganze nochmals intensiviert. Also wenn ihr die Gelegenheit auf einen Gig mit SWEET ELECTRIC habt, müsst ihr diese Chance nutzen. (Review)

STORACE „Crossfire“

Der in Malta geborene Schweizer Musiker Marc Storace wurde vor allem als Sänger der Band KROKUS, die wohl jedem ältereren Rockfan bekannt sein dürfte. Seine knackige prägnante Stimme, die eher in hohen Tonlagen unterwegs ist, wurde zu seinem Markenzeichen. Diese prägt nun auch den Sound auf „Crossfire“, dass dieses Jahr von seinem Projekt STORACE im Dezember erschienen ist. In Zeiten, wo viele Bands versuchen den Sound irgendwie neu zu erfinden oder zu kombinieren, orientieren sich STORACE bewusst am ganz und gar klassischen Hardrock. Starke Midtempo-Kracher, flotte treibende Rock ‚N‘ Roller und famose Rock-Hymnen gehen hier Hand in Hand. CROSSBONE SKULLY with „Evil World Machine“

CROSSBONE SKULLY hauen mit „Evil World Machine“ ein phänomenales Debüt raus, indem sie uns mit 13 äußerst schmackhaften Rock-Cocktails verführen, die süchtig machen. Man wird besessen und kann nicht genug davon bekommen. Es ist purer Genuß von vorne bis hinten! „Evil World Machine“ ist ein Album, was man lieben muss! Abgesehen von der geilen Musik erachte ich die Message des Albums als sehr wertvoll. Mit diesem starken Gesamtpaket haben sie es auf Platz Eins meiner Liste geschafft. (Review)

Foreword

It’s time again! Another year is coming to an end. There’s so much great stuff out there, even apart from the big well known bands! I’m glad that the scene is so lively and diverse. We at ‚metal-heads.de‘ are above all a magazine for the underground. If you only took into account the bands that have more than 500,000 or more followers, then there would probably be the possibility of keeping a certain overview. But we think that many extremely good bands would not be included. Of course, the sheer number of releases means that you can’t keep track of them all.

Therefore, one can certainly argue about the sense and nonsense of such top lists. So take this list for what it is. Recommendations based on personal taste! Take it as a suggestion to listen to the albums. Check out other lists and then decide for yourself which bands you like the most and maybe you’ll discover a few new bands. I would like to start with the ROCK category. There were a lot of strong releases in this category this year, which were able to inspire with very different sounds. Here is a small selection, which illustrates the diverse range well.

VIOLET „Mysteria“

If you like 80’s pop rock sounds, you can’t miss the album “Mysteria” by VIOLET. With a good feeling for great harmonies and a deep appreciation for the feeling of the 80’s, they put the listener in a time machine and catapult him into this time, in which you can wonderfully linger with fantastic songs. Absolutely authentic music from VIOLET, who convey the feeling for the 80’s 100% with their creative skills. (Review)

STEPFATHER FRED „Rubicon“

STEPFATHER FRED simply have what it takes. I love their musical interpretation, which has its very own character and is highly recognisable. Dirty hard rock that sometimes flirts with metal and also knows how to play soulful passages without sounding „soft“. On their new album „Rubicon“, they skilfully use all of their strengths to produce once again real smash hits, which inspire with creative ideas, but also simply rock straight ahead. This makes the album „Rubicon“ a brilliant rock event with a consistently good punch. (Review)

The Devils „Let The World Burn Down“

Right at the cold start of the year, THE DEVILS have provided a hot surprise with „Let The World Burn Down“. It is the essence of rock ’n‘ roll in its purest form. The sound returns to the basic elements and is so damn dirty and sexy that it is pure joy to listen to the album over and over again. At just over 30 minutes, it’s very short, but it’s addictive, so you’ll be listening to it on repeat several times anyway. (Review)

RAVENSTINE „2024“

RAVENSTINE show new facets of their great rock music on their album „2024“. It is not as demanding and brash as their debut, but is still convincing across the board. It perfectly underlines RAVENSTINE’s creative vein. The songs are beautifully crafted with great attention to detail and deliver many melodic subtleties. Many of the songs immediately get stuck in your head with their catchy choruses. What’s more, the production is incredibly good, because the sound is fantastic. (Review)

MAVERICK – „Silver Tongue“ 

With „Silver Tongue“, MAVERICK have achieved a brilliant achievement. In addition to really cool, rousing melodic rock songs, MARVERICK can also shine with some sweet little gems in the form of sensitive yet powerful ballads. For me, it could have sounded a bit sharper and dirtier here and there, like in the song „Daywalker“, but even so, the songs are really great hits and wonderful to listen to. So a strong recommendation for the album „Silver Tongue“ by MAVERICK. (Review)

THE PINPRICKS

With their album „This Stuff Is Poison“, THE PINPRICKS set off a firework. They provide pure entertainment with their cheeky, blunt way of presenting songs. As with „Sugar K“, which deals with drug addiction, THE PINPRICKS also tackle other serious topics in their songs, but these are packaged in cool songs that are consistently rousing and groovy. The songs on the album are individually crafted and each has its own signature style. This keeps them fresh and entertaining. The playing times of the songs are crisp and short, just hard to the point. THE PINPRICKS mix all high-percentage musical ingredients and produce tasty, intoxicating rock shots. (Review)

SWEET ELECTRIC „The Monster Are Rising“

SWEET ELECTRIC celebrate a wild rock party on their debut ‘The Monsters Are Rising’. It is an inspiring and intoxicating craziness that is ingeniously transported and expressed musically by the band. It’s a lot of fun to listen to. It is teeming with diverse, rousing songs, all of which blow away any gloom. The whole thing is intensified even more live. So if you have the chance to see SWEET ELECTRIC at a gig, you have to take it. (Review)

STORACE „Crossfire“

Born in Malta, Swiss musician Marc Storace is best known as the lead singer of the band KROKUS, which is probably familiar to every older rock fan. His crisp, concise voice, which tends to travel in high pitches, has become his trademark. This now also characterizes the sound on „Crossfire“, which was released this year by his project STORACE in December. In times when many bands try to reinvent or combine their sound, STORACE consciously orientate themselves on classic hard rock. Strong mid-tempo bangers, fast-paced driving rock ’n‘ rollers and great rock anthems go hand in hand here. With „Evil World Machine“, CROSSBONE SKULLY have released a phenomenal debut, seducing us with 13 extremely tasty, addictive rock cocktails. You become obsessed and can’t get enough of it. It’s pure joy from front to back! „Evil World Machine“ is an album you have to love! Apart from the great music, I consider the album’s message to be very valuable. With this strong overall package, they have made it to number one on my list. (Review)

THE DEVILS (Facebook) kommen aus Neapel. Für mich kommt es etwas überraschend, dass ich aus Italien so verdammt geilen sexy verruchten Rock ’n‘ Roll geliefert bekomme. Aber hier ist es: „Let The World Burn Down“! Es beweist einmal mehr, dass man eigentlich in alles reinhören muss, was man als Redakteur eines Musikmagazins geliefert bekommt. Das ist zwar nicht realistisch umsetzbar, aber man gibt sein Bestes, um möglichst viel zu hören und euch hörenswerte Bands und Alben zu empfehlen. Und „Let The World Burn Down“ gehört sicherlich in die Sammlung eines jeden Rock ’n‘ Roll Fans.

Purer minimalistischer Rock ’n‘ Roll

Es ist lange her, dass ich so authentischen Rock ’n‘ Roll gehört habe, der sich ganz auf das wesentliche reduziert und trotzdem so wahnsinnig heiß und schmutzig abliefert. Bei der Musik sehe ich mich in einer verruchten und verrauchten old school Kneipe auf einem Hocker an der Bar sitzen, wo in der einen Ecke eine Wurlitzer Musikbox steht und in der anderen zwei Billardtische. Das Publikum besteht aus einfachen bodenständigen Leuten, die einfach nur ihren Abend genießen und über Alltagsscheiss reden wollen während sie Bier und Whiskey trinken. Und dann kommen THE DEVILS, bauen ihr Set in einer Ecke auf und legen locker los. Es dauert nur Sekunden und jeder Gast wird diesem Duo sofort fasziniert zuhören. Genauso wie ich es getan habe.

Wenn die verwegene Stimme von Sängerin Erika Switchblade erklingt, dann gibt es kein Entkommen mehr. Es klingt so verdammt heiß, dass meine Ohren und mein Herz umgehend in Flammen stehen. Dazu dieser erdige lässige Sound, der sich sofort im Opener „Divine Is The Illusion“ manifestiert und offenbart. Diese Mischung ist krass und macht süchtig.

Ein wilder Ritt

Der zweite Song „Killer’s Kiss“ schraubt ein wenig das Tempo hoch und der Groove nimmt Formen an. Das zerrt direkt an meinen Hüften, direkt runter von meinem Barhocker. Und das ist auch gut so, denn mit dem rasanten „Mr. Hot Stuff“ nimmt das Album nun die volle Fahrt auf und schüttelt mich so richtig durch. Und ich komme nicht drum herum an den Kultfilm „Pulp Fiction“ zu denken. Puhhh… jetzt rinnt mir der Schweiß schon die Stirn runter. Zum Glück geht das Tempo wieder zurück und mit dem Cover-Song „Big City Lights“ (im Original von Cleo Randle — 1966) kommt wieder etwas langsamer Schwung in die Sache. Danach kann ich mit dem coolen düsteren Blues bei „Till Life Do Us Part“ super entspannen. Atmosphäre bis zum Abwinken!

Genug ausgeruht, denn anschließend drehen THE DEVILS voll durch und treten das Gaspedal bis aufs Blech. „Roar II“ prügelt nur so drauflos. Das wäre was für einen Rock ’n‘ Roll Moshpit. Total irre! „Shake ‚Em“ hält sich ebenfalls nicht zurück und ist wie ein wilder Ritt bei einem Rodeo. Explosive Energie!

Bei „Teddy Girl Boogie“ ( Original „Teddy Girl Boogie“ von ‚Crazy Cavan ’n‘ The Rhythm Rockers‘ aus dem Jahr 1975) darf wieder die Hüfte geschwungen werden. Der Song platzt vor lauter Charme mit Sängerin Erika. Und das ändert sich bei „The Last Rebel“ natürlich nicht, der vom Sound mehr in Richtung des Openers geht. Cool wie der Song zum Ende hin an Intensität zunimmt. „Horror And Desire“ ist das Finale des Albums, wobei man sich an einigen extrem coolen bluesigen Gitarrensolos erfreuen darf.

Fazit

THE DEVILS haben mit „Let The World Burn Down“ etwas ganz besonderes erschaffen. Es ist die Essenz von Rock ’n‘ Roll in ihrer reinsten Form. Der Sound besinnt sich auf die Grundelemente und ist dabei so verdammt schmutzig und sexy, dass es durchweg pure Freude bereitet das Album wieder und wieder zu hören. Denn mit knapp über 30 Minuten ist es zwar sehr kurz, aber es macht süchtig, so dass man es sowieso etliche Male in Dauerschleife hören wird.

THE DEVILS (Facebook) come from Naples. It comes as a bit of a surprise to me that I get such damn sexy, wicked rock ’n‘ roll from Italy. But here it is: „Let The World Burn Down“! It proves once again that you have to listen to everything you get as the editor of a music magazine. That’s not realistically feasible, but we do your best to listen to as much as possible and recommend bands and albums that are worth listening to. And this album certainly belongs in every rock ’n‘ roll fan’s collection.

Pure rock ’n‘ roll

It’s been a long time since I’ve heard such authentic rock ’n‘ roll that is reduced to the essentials and still delivers such insanely hot and dirty music. With the music playing, I see myself sitting on a stool in a wicked smoky old school pub, with a Wurlitzer jukebox in one corner and two pool tables in the other. The crowd is made up of simple, down-to-earth people who just want to enjoy their evening and talking about everyday shit, while drinking beer and whiskey. And then THE DEVILS arrive, set up their set in a corner and get going. It only takes seconds and every guest is immediately fascinated by this duo. Just like I did.

When the daredevil voice of singer Erika Switchblade rings out, there’s no escaping it. It sounds so damn hot that my ears and my heart is immediately on fire. Plus this earthy, laid-back sound that manifests and reveals itself immediately in the opener „Divine Is The Illusion“, a killer and addictive mix is created.

A wild rodeo

The second song „Killer’s Kiss“ ups the tempo a little and the groove takes shape. It tugs at my hips, right off my bar stool. And that’s a good thing, because with the fast-paced „Mr. Hot Stuff“ the album picks up full speed and really shakes me up. The sweat is already running dow my skin. Fortunately, with „Big City Lights“ (originally by Cleo Randle in 1966), things slow down a little again. After that I can really relax with the cool, dark blues on „Till Life Do Us Part“. Fantastic atmosphere!

Enough rest, because THE DEVILS then go full throttle and put the pedal to the metal. „Roar II“ just pounds away. This would be something for a rock ’n‘ roll mosh pit. Totally crazy! „Shake ‚Em“ doesn’t hold back either and is like a wild ride at a rodeo. Explosive energy!

With „Teddy Girl Boogie“ (original „Teddy Boy Boogie“ by ‚Crazy Cavan ’n‘ The Rhythm Rockers‘ from 1975) you can shake your hips again. The song is bursting with charm with singer Erika. And of course this doesn’t change with „The Last Rebel“, which sounds more like the opener.
