THE PINPRICKS (Facebook/Homepage) sind wieder da! Na, sie waren ja nie weg, aber jetzt sind sie endlich mit ihrem Debütalbum am Start. Es begab sich im Mai 2020, als ich ihre EP „Bait“ in die Hände bzw. auf die Ohren bekam. Ich war auf der Stelle hin und weg. Wie sagte ich noch damals:

Die Songs rocken my little heart, welches beim Genuß der Songs anstatt runde nur noch gitarrenförmige Blutkörperchen produziert.

Purer Rock frei Schnauze

Ich habe Ronja und Nils über die Jahre natürlich nicht aus den Augen und Ohren verloren und kann sagen, dass sie sich über die Jahre den Arsch abgerockt haben. Neben zahlreichen Live-Auftritten haben sie hart an ihrem Debütalbum gearbeitet. Zwischendurch kamen einige Singles raus, deren Videos sie meist selber komplett in Eigenregie produziert haben. Sie haben sich durch alle Widrigkeiten gebissen und alle Hürden übersprungen, um uns nun mit ihrem Debüt „This Stuff Is Poison“ zu zeigen, was alles in ihnen steckt.

„This Stuff Is Poison“

Da ich die Band immer weiter verfolgt hatte, war ich nun nicht so überrascht, dass die Songs auf dem Debüt nicht ganz dem Stil entsprechen, der auf „Bait“ zu hören war. Aber was solls! Denn trotzdem sind es unverkennbar THE PINPRICKS, denn sie haben sich ihre Wildheit, Unverblümtheit und bissige Coolness beibehalten. Sie machen einfach das, worauf sie Bock haben. Und das machen sie mit so viel Energie und Spielfreude, dass es nur so knallt. Ich liebe ihre Art und ich liebe das Debüt, dass sogar mit der einen oder anderen Überraschung daherkommt, mit der ich vorher nie gerechnet hätte.

Die größte Überraschung war für mich sicherlich „Sugar K“, der auch gleich als Opener das Spektakel eröffnet. Und es mag irgendwie kurios anmuten, dass „Sugar K“ für mich sogar einer der Lieblingssongs auf dem Album ist. Ich fühle mich an die Band Placebo (Megahit „Song To Say Goodbye“) erinnert, nur mit mehr knackigen Rockvibes. Wie bei Placebo, schwingt bei „Sugar K“ eine gewisse Traurigkeit bzw. Tragik mit. Dieser Ohrwurm wird sich jedenfalls in euren Köpfen einnisten und nicht mehr rauskommen. Kann gar nicht mehr zählen wie oft der Song schon bei mir rotiert ist.

Vollgas Richtung Rock

Die Songs auf dem Album klingen so geil erfrischend, denn THE PINPRICKS toben sich in allen Bereich des Rock aus. Hauptsache es fetzt und mach Spaß. „Killing Trap“ beweist, dass nicht nur der Opener Ohrwurmqualitäten zu bieten hat. „Killing Trap“ kommt deutlich rockiger als der Opener und lebt von einem starken Kontrast zwischen den coolen „gesprochenen“ Strophen und dem lockeren beschwingten Refrain. „No More No“ röhrt ne Spur härter und ist eine coole Punkrock-Rakete. Der Song klingt einerseits total lässig und schmissig, lässt es aber zwischendurch mächtig laut krachen. Ein heißes Rockfeuer, dass euch gehörig ins Schwitzen bringen wird.

 „Anyway“ ist eine dreckige Rockgranate. Ich bekomme einfach gute Laune bei so einem Song, der so eine Leck-Mich-Am-Arsch Attitüde raushaut und Euch sagt: Zieht einfach Euer Ding durch, egal was andere sagen, die es immer besser wissen (wollen) oder alles schwarzsehen (wollen). Rückschläge gibt es immer wieder im Leben, aber lasst Euch den Spaß am Leben nicht nehmen und kämpft für Eure Träume.

„Tell Me Mother“ veröffentlicht, die sich mit dem Thema Krieg beschäftigt. Allerdings erzählen die Lyrics die Wahrnehmung eines Krieges aus der Sicht eines Kindes. Ein unschuldiges Kind versteht wohl am wenigsten die brutale Sinnlosigkeit eines Krieges, wenn plötzlich Albträume Realität werden und der kindliche spielerische Alltag ein Ende hat. Die Mission von „Tell Me Mother“ ist ein brennender Appell für den Frieden!

Diesmal begeistern sie mit einer sehr eindringlichen Midtempo-Nummer. Die bekannte und beliebte PINPRICKS-Energie mit einer Extraporion frecher fetziger Coolness darf natürlich ebenfalls nicht fehlen. Elektronische Synthies geben dem Ganzen am Beginn des Songs noch einen besonderen groovigen Touch, der mir sehr gut gefällt und zum Tanzen einlädt. Doch bald wird der Song entschieden schärfer. In seiner gesamten Kombination holt mich auch dieser Song von THE PINPRICKS voll ab. 

Fazit

Mit dem Album „This Stuff Is Poison“ zünden THE PINPRICKS ein knalliges Feuerwerk ab. Mit ihrer frechen, unverblümten Art Songs zu präsentieren sorgen sie für astreine Unterhaltung. Wie bei „Sugar K“, der sich mit der Drogensucht beschäftigt, packen THE PINPRICKS auch andere ernste Themen in ihren Songs auf, aber diese sind in geile Songs verpackt, die durchweg mitreißend fetzig sind. Die Songs auf dem Album sind individuell gestaltet und haben jeweils ihre eigene Handschrift. Das sorgt für Frische und Kurzweiligkeit. Die Spielzeiten der Songs sind knackig kurz, eben hart auf den Punk(t) gebracht. THE PINPRICKS werfen alle hochprozentigen Zutaten des Rock in den Mixer und produzieren so immer wieder schmackhafte berauschende musikalische Rockshots.

THE PINPRICKS (Facebook/Homepage) are back! Well, they’ve never been away, but now they’re finally back with their debut album. It was back in May 2020 when I got my hands on their EP “Bait”. I was instantly blown away. As I said back then:

The songs rock my little heart, which only produces guitar-shaped blood cells instead of round ones when enjoying the songs.

Pure rock with no frills

Of course, I haven’t lost sight and sound of Ronja and Nils over the years and can say that they have rocked their asses off over the years. In addition to numerous live gigs, they have worked hard on their debut album. In between, they released a few singles, most of whose videos they produced entirely on their own. They have bitten through all the adversity and jumped over all the hurdles to show us what they are made of with their debut “This Stuff Is Poison”.

As I had always followed the band, I wasn’t that surprised that the songs on the debut didn’t quite match the style that could be heard on “Bait”. But what the hell! Because it’s still unmistakably THE PINPRICKS, because they’ve retained their wildness, bluntness and biting coolness. They simply do what they feel like doing. And they do it with so much energy and enthusiasm that it just pops. I love their style and I love their debut, which even comes with one or two surprises that I would never have expected before.

The biggest surprise for me was certainly “Sugar K”, which also opens the show. And it may seem strange that “Sugar K” is actually one of my favorite songs on the album. I feel reminded of the band Placebo (megahit “Song To Say Goodbye”), only with more crunchy rock vibes. As with Placebo, there is a certain sadness or tragedy to “Sugar K”. This catchy tune will get stuck in your head and never come out. I can’t count how many times this song has been on rotation.

Full throttle to rock

The songs on the album sound so cool and refreshing, because THE PINPRICKS let off steam in all areas of rock. The main thing is that it rocks and is fun. “Killing Trap” proves that it’s not just the opener that has catchy tunes to offer. “Killing Trap” is much rockier than the opener and is characterized by a strong contrast between the cool ‘spoken’ verses and the relaxed, upbeat chorus. „No More No“ roars a bit harder and is a cool punk rock rocket. On the one hand, the song sounds totally laid-back and snappy, but in between you will be hit by loud attacks. A hot rock fire that will really get you sweating.

“Anyway” is a dirty rock grenade. I just get in a good mood when I hear a song like this, which has such a “fuck you” attitude and tells you: just do your thing, no matter what others say, who always (want to) know better or (want to) see everything as black. There are always setbacks in life, but don’t let them take the fun out of life and fight for your dreams.

“Tell Me Mother”, which deals with the subject of war. However, the lyrics tell the story of a war from the perspective of a child. An innocent child is probably the least likely to understand the brutal senselessness of war when nightmares suddenly become reality and the childish, playful everyday life comes to an end. The mission of “Tell Me Mother” is a burning appeal for peace!

This time they inspire with a very haunting mid-tempo song. The well-known and popular PINPRICKS energy with an extra portion of cheeky coolness is of course also a must. Electronic synths give the whole thing a special groovy touch at the beginning of the song, which I really like and invites you to dance. But the song soon becomes decidedly sharper. In its entire combination, this song by THE PINPRICKS really gets me.

Conclusion

With their album „This Stuff Is Poison“, THE PINPRICKS set off a firework. They provide pure entertainment with their cheeky, blunt way of presenting songs. As with „Sugar K“, which deals with drug addiction, THE PINPRICKS also tackle other serious topics in their songs, but these are packaged in cool songs that are consistently rousing and groovy. The songs on the album are individually crafted and each has its own signature style. This keeps them fresh and entertaining. The playing times of the songs are crisp and short, just hard to the point. THE PINPRICKS mix all high-percentage musical ingredients and produce tasty, intoxicating rock shots.
