VOLCANOVA haben am 21. August 2020 ihr Debüt-Album „Radical Waves“ herausgebracht, das mir richtig gut gefallen hat – auch wenn Stoner Rock sonst nicht so meine Musik ist. (Die Review könnt ihr HIER lesen.)
Neugierig darauf geworden, wer hinter der Band steckt, wie die Jungs sich gefunden und dann den Stoner Rock in VOLCANOVA-Manier entwickelt haben, habe ich ihrem Bassisten Þorsteinn Árnason ein paar Fragen gestellt.

Father and BLACK SABBATH

I associate Stoner Rock with FU MANCHU, KYUSS, California, 80s -Psychedelic Rock, marijuana, jam sessions in the desert, etc. but rather less with Iceland. How did you come to play this music? Where or through whom did you get to know this kind of music?

I guess you could say that I´ve been listening to stoner/doom since I was a little kid with Black Sabbath on vinyl with my father, although I had no idea at the time that I was listening to some very important pioneers.

But I remember really getting my foot into the stoner rock around 10-12 years ago, I saw Brain Police play here in Iceland along with Brant Bjork and The Bros and that was the first time for me seeing Brain Police and it was pretty spectacular, especially to see Brant Bjork of course. After that I started getting into bands like Clutch, The Sword, Fu Manchu and so on although I had been listening to bands like Mastodon and Gojira. But at the time I remember I was more into prog metal, but not so much now. Then I started a band in my hometown in 2009 and we played some kind of stoner metal.

You come from different parts of Iceland. How / where did you get to know each other? Do you all live in Reykjavík by now? Where do you rehearse? 

Sammi [Samúel Ásgeirsson (Vocals, Gitarre)] had seen me and Dagur [Dagur Atlason (Drums)] play with our previous bands and he knew that both of us were moving to Reykjavík, there were some changes going on with the band so he contacted us and asked us if we would be interested in joining the band. So me and Sammi really didn’t know each other when we joined the band, but me and Dagur were good friends.
And yes, we all live in Reykjavík now and we rehearse at our practice room in Reykjavík which we call “Helvíti” or “Hell”. So when we want to write some good tunes we go to hell.

Who came up with the idea for the band name? 

It came up in class a long time ago when they were teaching Sammi about the Icelandic landscape and natural disasters.

You have been playing together for a few years and have played a number of shows (among others) with SÓLSTAFIR, THE VINTAGE CARAVAN, ELDER. So you had quite a few songs ready. Why did your fans have to wait for an album until a few days ago? 

Although the band was formed in 2014, me and Dagur didn´t join the band until autumn days of 2017. So you can say in a way, that a new band was formed with an old name. We started writing songs straight away and played our first show around 4 or 5 months later. At our first shows, we did play one or two old songs from the previous version of the band and one of them ended up on “Radical Waves” which is “Mountain”.

A little less than a year later after we first met or in August 2018, we entered the studio to record “Radical Waves” which was fully composed at the time. We took almost another year to record it, mostly because of work, school and so on and to find time with our producer. After the album was finished, we started label hunting, because it was never really in the picture to release it by ourselves, so that took another year. So three years later after we first met, we finally got to release “Radical Waves”.

How did you come to The Sign Records? Did you write new songs for „Radical Waves“ or did you use the songs that were already tried and tested? 

After we finished the album, we went searching for labels and The Sign was one of the label that showed interest in us and we really liked what they were doing and liked some of the bands on the label, so here we are. Like said earlier, only one old song ended up on the album which is “Mountain”, other than that, there were only new songs on it written by us from 2017 to 2018.

Reactions to “Radical Waves”

Your album “Radical Waves” was released on August 21, 2020. How have the reactions been so far? 

The reactions have been unbelievable and quite beyond our expectations. We´ve had an endless amount of amazing reviews and we´ve sold quite a few, so we couldn´t be happier or ask for more.

A look at your Facebook page and the videos show that, seemingly, fun plays an important role for you. Or am I wrong about that? 

You are definitely not wrong about that, that has always been a theme for all the three of us after we first got together, to not take things too seriously and I think it doesn’t only come through from our lyrics, our music and videos, but also from our live performances.

The album is a quirky mix of partying, serious topics, fun and death. Where do the ideas/the lyrics come from? How does the song-writing work for you? Is everyone involved? 

Yes, being all involved is a very big and important part of our composing procedure. But as for the song-writing, there is no exact formula for how it goes. Sometimes the songs come out of nowhere just from jamming on some riffs in the rehearsal room, sometimes one of us comes with a complete song and often one of us comes to rehearsal with some riffs from home, then we jam on them together and if we like what we´re hearing, we take it to the next stage of writing and that’s where composition comes in, where we all take part in, whether it’s coming up with new riffs or gluing together two or more riffs. Usually the singing melody comes last and sometimes we´ve been jamming on some songs for a long time before the singing is added. But when it’s added it´s usually just one of us that comes up with some melodies and then it’s usually up to that one to write lyrics but it can vary, sometimes we write the lyrics and the melodies together.

The Devil likes Sushi

Who came up with the idea for the videos? (Especially “Sushi Sam”?) 

Dagur came up with the idea for the Sushi Sam video, he also wrote the lyrics, so the concept about Lucifer roaming earth in a human form and that he has to eat sushi to maintain that form comes completely from Dagur. As for the “Super Duper Van video”, we had some rough ideas but most of the script is written by the producer, Gotti, who made both videos.

Do you have a favourite song on the album? You are the bass player for VOLCANOVA. You once said that you were originally a guitarist, but the band needed a bass player and so you took on that part. Have you come to terms with this position in the meantime or would you rather take on the guitar part? 

I think my favorite one from the album is M.O.O.D. Mainly because it’s so heavy and intense and it touches on a sensitive and a personal matter. It was written by Dagur and it’s so perfectly composed in my opinion and I always enjoy it so much playing it live mainly because of its heaviness and intensity like said earlier.

As for now, I´m just pretty cool with playing the bass and the reason could well be that I really just suck at the guitar since I almost entirely quit playing it when I started playing the bass around 18 years ago. But I really just enjoy the bass as an instrument and I always find it charming to have the freedom to dance around the guitar with some nice bass lines.Release-show had to be postponed due to Covid-19

In September you wanted to play at the Hard Rock Cafe in Reykjavík. The show has been postponed to October. Does this have to do with the Covid-19 situation? What has changed for you personally and for the band and how do you deal with it? How is the pandemic affecting the music scene in Iceland? 

Yes we had to postpone it because of Covid. We had a little Covid free window this summer here in Iceland and we were pretty optimistic about that gig in September but then they opened the borders for tourists and everything went sideways again. But the situation is under control after they tightened the borders again. So hopefully we can celebrate Radical Waves on Hard Rock on October 17th. 

As for me personally, it hasn’t affected me that much. I have a steady job and so on. As for the band, fortunately we got to play a few good gigs this summer, but it has not been the same, it’s annoying not being able to plan other gigs and so on and being forced to postpone gigs. But we managed to keep busy during the lockdown, we recorded some demos and did some stream gigs. But it has affected others a lot more. Everyone in the music scene is affected, especially the ones that depend on the income that comes from live music: artists, sound engineers, light techs, venues and so on and I know a lot of people that are struggling and it’s just really really bad and I feel for every single one of them. And that is of course the case all around the world.

Nothing to do but hope for the best and stay positive and really hope that the government will do something for this super important part of our society.

Dreams: on tour with MASTODON or QOTSA

When the whole situation returns to relative normalcy: do you want to go on tour? 

That is our goal although it’s hard to see when that can happen compared to the situation. We´ve already started to look at some dates for next year but you never know how the situation will be. But of course when it’s all over we just want to get out there and play as much as we can, that has always been our goal.

Which band would you like to play a show with or go on tour with? 

We are ready to go on tour with almost every band in the world or artist, although we do have a few exciting names in the hat for next year that could well happen. Although the dream tour would be with MASTODON or QOTSA, just to name something. It has also been mentioned to do a tour with our good friends in THE VINTAGE CARAVAN but nothing has been planned and hopefully we can make that happen someday. They have been doing such great things and we really look up to them, both as musicians and also for being just fantastic human beings and good friends, so that would definitely be something that we would be up for.

I have the impression that Icelandic bands are basically always asked to what extent or in what respect the (rough, bizarre, dark) landscape of Iceland has shaped their music. (And I’m just wondering if you’ve ever asked KYUSS how far the landscape or the climate influenced their music. And what they could have answered.) Which aspects of the Icelandic landscape or the climate did you include in the music? Or is the connection only to the volcanoes? 

Well that’s quite right, we do get that question a lot and I guess it’s understandable in a way, the landscape here is fantastic and I think being isolated on an Island with this beautiful nature and landscape comes into the picture as well. I’m not sure that VOLCANOVA is intentionally influenced by the landscape or the climate although dark and cold winters might have influenced something in our songwriting.
But you never know, maybe we are influenced every day all day by the midnight sun and the mountains surrounding us or the cold and dark winter nights without knowing it. Looking at the whole picture, I really just think that our music is more influenced by ourselves as individuals and how we fit our ideas together to form our music rather than being influenced by the landscape, but then again, you could also say that the nature and the climate might affect one or two of us more than the other, so I guess you could also say that in a way the band might be influenced by the Icelandic climate and nature.
But that has never been like a big thing for us to try to express that in our music and I think our only connection to volcanoes is the name. VOLCANOVA means new volcano and of course it’s fitting to our environment, since this little island is made out of fire and ice. 

Life is a party – and then you die

Did you ever think: Hey, why don’t we write our lyrics in Icelandic as well? Or does that not fit to Stoner Rock? 

That actually never crossed our minds I think. I guess you could fit Icelandic lyrics or every language for that matter to every genre but in our case, and since we’re also aiming for foreign market i´m not sure how people would react to it although we´ve had some Icelandic bands that have been very successful outside of Iceland that sing in Icelandic, SÓLSTAFIR for example. Icelandic can also be very tricky and it can be a fine line between writing really good and beautiful lyrics and on the other hand to write horrible lyrics, so sometimes I really just find it easier to write lyrics in English, I also think it would just sound strange but you never know I guess.

What are your next plans? 

If everything works out, we will do our release concert on october 17th and then we have a few other gigs planned for the rest of the year. Otherwise we will keep on planning next year and hopefully we can do a good tour or two to follow up on Radical Waves.

THE HAWKINS will release their album “Silence Is A Bomb” on September 4th, 2020.

It has become a multi-layered album with great melodies and full of energy. (More details in the review.) There is a lot to discover: musically but above all in the lyrics. Since I like word games and allusions e.g. with literature, musicians, pieces of music or ideas, I also had a lot of joy (of discovery) in this respect. I spoke to Johannes Carlsson, who is responsible for the lyrics, about two of these allusions.

The lyrics (on „Aint Rock ′N Roll)“ have a socially critical view. Whether it is about dealing with expectations that the environment has on the individual, or about a topic that is not only relevant in Sweden: dealing with Nazis (as in „Fuck All I’m Outta Here“ or „The Astronomical Fool“). The lyrics of the new album address personal or social aspects more or less directly. I also noticed some interesting allusions (two examples below).

Please tell us briefly from your point of view what the lyrics are about. (Maybe you have a text / topic that is particularly close to your heart.)

The lyrics for “Silence Is A Bomb” truly are very personal stories. It’s in a way pretty gonzo when I think about it; almost every song is a reflection of a person in an extreme state of mind. For me the album represents that build-up of things that I hadn’t talked about. And yeah, to be fair, almost ALL music is an outlet for stuff you couldn’t or wouldn’t express otherwise, but this album became so filled with intense emotions, that that’s what it represents to me.

The lyrics deal with serious, life-determining topics. The music is Rock ‚N‘ Roll (and yet again not), rock and a little punk (?). For me it is the perfect music while driving a convertible on country roads. Fast paced, somewhat chaotic, sweaty and debauched.
Initially, one does not necessarily expect socially critical and differentiated lyrics with such music.
Why does these fit well together for you?

For me it works good because of the contrasts within the song and the fact that it actually is unexpected and/or fascinates and chafes. Probably the biggest meaning I find in listening to music is the feeling of loving something that you can’t really understand why you do. It could be felt in the song structure, the harmonical content, the performance, the lyrics and/or the context of where the music is heard. Those moments occur from time to time, when exposed to music and is probably the purest feeling of love I can feel. To me it is also the closest feeling of something magical. It makes me want to live and evolve and create. I want to evoke those feelings through my own music. That gives me great purpose.

How does the contrast come into play?

I like using contrast to make a point but also a reaction. The contrast can create abstraction and unanswered questions. Because contrasts can be provocative, uncomfortable and it can often leave a whole lot of “Why?”. Perhaps I’ll find the contrast-thingy boring later, but right now it is fun.

As I read the title of the album, I was excited to see what you would make of it.

Later when I read the lyrics referring to John Cage’s „4’33“ in a nice play on words, I thought about what Cage said about „silence“. That there is no silence, no empty space or empty time, since there are always noises.

Glad you picked up on that! Yeah, I guess that was partially one of his reasons for writing „4’33“ as well. I got intrigued by him expressing that he enjoyed the sound of silence(environment) more than written music, because he liked how those sounds didn’t try to tell him something. That he just liked sounds the way they are, that they don’t have to be constructed with an ulterior motive or such.

What does silence mean to you? In what way is it a bomb?

Although most of the silence referred to in our album has very little to to with this(I just wanted talk a little about John Cage haha). The silence in this album is more as expressed above. The silence where you go in a deep downward spiral with thoughts escalating. But it is also a silence that will break. The balloon will burst at some point.

 In „Cut Moon Bleeds“ you take up the phrase ‟Silence is a bomb” again. You also use ‟Mate Ka Moris Ukun Rasik An” a title by PROPAGANDHI, which addresses the human rights violations in East Timor by the Indonesian Suharto – regime.
It all sounds pretty „cryptic“. What does it mean to you? What is your intention, the point about it?

You’ve actually been listening(not all interviewers does that, haha)! It makes me happy to hear!
I am a bit ambivalent about spoiling songs;
On one hand people should be able to make up their own minds and through the abstract data, that a song might be, paint their own picture. I love that about art, ‘cause the creation through interpreting a song can not only make you learn something about yourself, but it can also be very rewarding in a “creativity-dopamine-kick” -kind of way.
On the other hand, I love analysis. And I feel this urge to explain what all references mean.
I can come to terms with answering your question like this:

Cut Moon Bleeds is essentially a song about personal and creative freedom. Propagandhi symbolizes that to me. Falling in love with their music, their lyrics and just how they are as a band, and the decisions they’ve made throughout their existence has meant so much to me. And it all started with the song “Mate Ka Moris Ukun Rasik An”. So see the allusion partially as a homage.
There is also a literal point I want to make with the phrase, but I’ll leave that to the listener to figure out.

By the way, if you look again you might just find some more funny references…

Yeah, I already have. I think we could talk about that for a long time.  But it should be enough for today.

Es ist ein vielschichtiges Album mit tollen Melodien und voller Energie geworden. (Mehr und Genaueres dazu in der Review.) Es gibt viel zu entdecken: musikalisch aber vor allen Dingen auch in den Lyrics. Da mir Wortspiele und Anspielungen z.B. auf Literatur, Musiker, Musikstücke oder Ideen Spaß machen, hatte ich auch in dieser Hinsicht viel (Entdecker-) Freude an diesem Album. Über zwei dieser Anspielungen habe ich mich mit Johannes Carlsson, der für die Lyrics verantwortlich ist, unterhalten.

Hey Johannes, die Texte auf eurem ersten Album „Aint Rock ‚N Roll“ sind sozialkritisch. Ob es um den Umgang mit Erwartungen geht, die die Umwelt an den Einzelnen hat, oder um ein Thema, das nicht nur in Schweden relevant ist: den Umgang mit Nazis (wie in „Fuck All I’m Outta Here“ oder „The Astronomical Fool“)

Die Texte des neuen Albums sprechen mehr oder weniger direkt persönliche oder soziale Aspekte an. Mir sind dabei auch einige interessante Anspielungen aufgefallen, zu denen ich dich etwas fragen möchte.

Erzähl‘ doch mal kurz aus deiner Sicht, worum es in den Texten geht.

Die Texte für „Silence is a Bomb“ sind wirklich sehr persönliche Geschichten. Es ist in gewisser Weise ziemlich verrückt, wenn ich darüber nachdenke. Fast jedes Lied ist ein Spiegelbild einer Person in einem extremen Geisteszustand. Für mich repräsentiert das Album den Aufbau von Dingen, über die ich bisher nicht gesprochen hatte. Und ja, um ehrlich zu sein, fast alle (!) Musik bietet die Möglichkeit, etwas auszudrücken, das man sonst nicht ausdrücken könnte. Dieses Album ist so voller intensiver Emotionen, dass das genau das ist, was es für mich darstellt.

Die Texte beschäftigen sich mit ernsthaften, lebensbestimmenden Themen. Die Musik ist Rock ‚N‘ Roll und dann wieder doch nicht, ein wenig Punk (?). Für mich die perfekte Musik, um mit einem Cabrio auf der Landstraße zu fahren. Temporeich, etwas chaotisch, verschwitzt und verkommen.

Zunächst erwartet man bei so einer Musik nicht unbedingt gesellschaftskritische und differenzierte Texte.

Wieso passt das für euch so gut zusammen?

Für mich funktioniert es gut aufgrund der Kontraste innerhalb des Songs und der Tatsache, dass es tatsächlich unerwartet ist und daher fasziniert oder sich reibt. Die wahrscheinlich größte Bedeutung hat beim Musikhören das Gefühl, etwas zu lieben, und dabei nicht wirklich verstehen zu können, warum man es tut. Du fühlst es in der Songstruktur, den harmonischen Anteilen, der Ausführung, den Texten und abhängig von dem Kontext, in dem die Musik gehört wird. Diese Momente treten entstehen von Zeit zu Zeit, wenn man Musik hört und erlebt. Sie sind wahrscheinlich das reinste Gefühl der Liebe, das ich fühlen kann. Für mich hat dies auch etwas Magisches. Es bringt mich dazu zu leben und mich zu entwickeln und etwas zu erschaffen. Und dieses Gefühl möchte ich durch meine eigene Musik hervorrufen. Das ist so etwas wie eine Bestimmung.

Welche Rolle spielt der Kontrast dabei?

Ich benutze gerne Kontrast, um etwas auf den Punkt zu bringen oder eine Reaktion hervorzurufen. Der Kontrast kann Abstraktion und unbeantworteten Fragen erzeugen. Weil Kontraste provokativ und unangenehm sein können und oft eine Menge Warum – Fragen hinterlassen. Vielleicht finde ich das Kontrast-Ding später langweilig, aber im Moment macht es Spaß.

Als ich den Titel des Albums sah, war ich schon sehr gespannt, was ihr daraus machen würdet.

Als ich den Text des Titelsongs gehört habe, in dem du auf „4‘33‘‘“ von John Cage in einem tollen Wortspiel Bezug nimmst, dachte ich daran, was Cage zum Thema „Stille“ gesagt hat. Also dass es keine Stille gibt, keinen leeren Raum oder leere Zeit, da immer Geräusche da sind.

Ich freue mich, dass du das mitbekommen hast! Ja, ich denke, das war teilweise einer seiner Gründe, „4’33“ zu schreiben. Ich war fasziniert von seinem Gedanken, dass er den Klang der Stille, der Umgebung mehr genoss als komponierte Musik. Weil ihm gefiel, dass Klänge nicht versuchen, etwas auszudrücken. Dass ihm die Geräusche so gefallen, wie sie sind, und nicht mit irgendwelchen Hintergedanken konstruiert wurden.

Was bedeutet Stille für dich? In welcher Hinsicht ist sie eine Bombe?

Die Stille, auf die wir in unserem Album Bezug nehmen, hat allerdings wenig damit zu tun. Ich wollte nur ein wenig über John Cage sprechen (haha). Die Stille auf die wir Bezug nehmen, ist mehr. Es ist die Stille, in der die Gedanken in einer Abwärtsspirale eskalieren. Aber es ist auch eine Stille, die durchbrochen wird. Der Ballon wird irgendwann platzen.

In „Cut Moon Bleeds“ nimmst du den Satz „Silence is a bomb“ wieder auf. Außerdem verwendest du mit „Mate Ka Moris Ukun Rasik An“ einen Titel von PROPAGANDHI, in dem die Menschenrechtsverletzungen in Ost-Timor durch das indonesische Suharto-Regime angesprochen werden.

Das klingt alles recht „kryptisch“. Worum geht es dir hier?

Du hast ja tatsächlich zugehört. Nicht alle Interviewer machen das (haha)!  Das freut mich!
Ich bin ein bisschen ambivalent, wenn es darum geht, etwas in dieser Hinsicht über die Songs zu sagen. Einerseits sollen sich die Zuhörer mit dem, was der Song übermittelt, ein eigenes Bild machen.   Das liebe ich an Kunst, dass man durch die Entwicklung und Interpretation eines Songs etwas nicht nur etwas über sich selbst lernen kann, sondern dass es auch eine „Kreativitäts-Dopamin-Kick“ werden kann.
Andererseits liebe ich die Analyse. Und ich verspüre den Drang zu erklären, was die ganzen  Bezüge und Hinweise bedeuten.

Um also auf deine Frage zurück zu kommen: „Cut Moon Bleeds“ ist im Wesentlichen ein Lied über persönliche und kreative Freiheit. PROPAGANDHI symbolisieren das für mich. Ich habe mich in ihre Musik, ihre Texte verliebt und darin, wie sie als Band sind. Aber auch, welche Entscheidungen sie im Laufe der Zeit getroffen haben. Das hat viel für mich bedeutet.

Und alles begann mit dem Song „Mate Ka Moris Ukun Rasik An“. So gesehen ist diese Anspielung auch eine Hommage. Es gibt auch noch eine weitere Ansicht, die ich damit ansprechen möchte. Aber ich überlasse es dem Hörer, dies herauszufinden.

Am 4. September 2020 kommt das neue Album „Silence Is A Bomb“ von THE HAWKINS via The Sign Records auf den Markt. Die ersten Auskoppelungen „The Roomer“,„Hilow“ und „Stones“ haben THE HAWKINS mit sehenswerten Videos präsentiert.

THE HAWKINS stehen für eine direkte und erfrischend moderne Rockmusik. Von der Grundstruktur her orientieren sie sich am Rock ′N Roll der 60er und 70erJahre. Ihre Musik ist temporeich, druckvoll und immer wieder unbeschwert und verspielt mit überraschenden Details und Bezügen zu anderen Musikrichtungen. Im Gegensatz zur meist lockeren Musik und  eingängigen Refrains stehen die Texte, die sich mit emotional und psychisch extremen Zuständen befassen oder auch kritisch auf gesellschaftliche Situationen schauen.

„Silence is a bomb“

Schon der Titel hat meine Neugier geweckt und ich war sehr gespannt, was THE HAWKINS daraus gemacht haben.

Der Opener „Silence Is A Bomb” ist ein großartiges Stück. Es klingt zunächst unbearbeitet wie eine Idee, eine musikalische Notiz. Mit der Zeile „Caged in 4‘33“ bezieht es sich auf „4‘33“ von John Cage, einEM Stück, das mit vermeintlicher Stille spielt. Dennoch geht es nicht um Stille als Lautlosigkeit, sondern um die Stille innerhalb von Umgebungsgeräuschen. Johann Carlsson, der Lyrics und Musik des Albums geschrieben hat, geht es aber darüber hinaus um die Stille, in der Gedanken in einer Abwärtsspirale immer weitere Kreise ziehen.

Da ich mehr über diese und weitere Anspielungen in den Lyrics wissen wollte, habe ich Johann ein paar Fragen dazu gestellt. Diese Fragen und seine Antworten könnt ihr morgen lesen.

Und ja: die Bombe „Stille“ explodiert und auf dem Album geht die Post ab!

„Roomer“ swingt rockig voller Energie. „Hilow“ ist dominiert von eingängigen und fast schon poppigen Melodien, die von starken Hooks und rockigem Rhythmus getragen werden.

Und mit „Stones“ ziehen sie das Tempo noch einmal an.

„Mynah“ hat ein großartiges Arrangement in den Vocals und schöne Melodien in den Gitarren.  Auch hier wieder eine enorme Spielfreude, die allein beim Zuhören gute Laune macht.

„Gimme a minute now“

Das nehmen sie wörtlich. Denn „Minuette“ ist mit besagter Minute der kürzeste Song des Albums. Aber sie bringen alles unter, was einen guten Rocksong ausmacht. Auch wenn es klingt, als würden sie sich gleich selbst überholen, bringen sie den Song mit der Textzeile „At least I feel something“ auf den Punkt.

Und nun kommt mein absoluter Lieblingssong dieses Albums: „Cut Moon Bleed“. Beginnend mit einer optimistischen Melodie, begleitet von pointierten Schlägen auf die Snare startet dieser Song. Die Stimme setzt selbstsicher und voll mit „This ist he best thing that I’ve ever done“ ein, um im Weiteren verletztlich aber auch fordernd zu klingen. Eben so, wie es die Lyrics gerade brauchen. Lyrics, die je nach Blickwinkel entweder kryptisch scheinen oder voller Anspielungen sind. So ist er auch als eine Hommage an PROPAGANDHI, der kanadischen „Progressive Thrash“ – Band, zu verstehen. An ihre kreative Freiheit ebenso wie an ihr politisches Anliegen.

„Cut Moon Bleed“ lebt von Kontrasten auf verschiedenen Ebenen. Sei es z.B. die eingängige Melodie im Kontrast zum Text oder das Spiel der Gitarren, die zunächst wie aus dem Off Akkorde hineinwerfen, die dann wunderbar ausgeschmückt werden.

Eigentlich ist der Song nicht komplex aufgebaut, aber dafür mit vielen pointiert gesetzten Elementen. Zum Beispiel wenn man meint, man könne sich in der Melodie oder im Rhythmus einrichten, kommt etwas Neues und Unerwartetes: eine Akkordfolge hier, ein Rhythmuswechsel dort, eine Veränderung in der Stimmlage. Dadurch entstehen Spannung und eine mitreißende Dynamik.

Bei dem rockig – treibenden „Libertine“ gefallen mit die Akkordfolgen und Hooklines genauso wie das gut vom Bass unterstützte Drumming.

Mit Vollgas in die Vielfalt

Grandios auch „Stranger In The Next Room”. Zunächst klingt er wie mit angezogener Bremse, um dann akzentuiert und fulminant loszurocken. Toll gemacht!

„Black Gold“ verbindet wieder unbeschwert klingende Musik, mit dunklen Texten. Da singt man von diesem Spaß mitgerissen „I’m wishing for cancer to come!” mit, um dann zu realisieren, worum es hier eigentlich geht.

In „Fisherman Blues“ sind die Vocals erneut himmlisch arrangiert und umgeben von hörenswerten Ideen und metallischen Riffs.

Mit „All My Birds Are Dead” werden wir aus dem Album entlassen. Mit Melancholie als Grundstimmung, Tempo und einer Portion energischem Trotz. Der fast kitschig klingende  Chor signalisiert: alles wird gut. Und auch die Stille ist wieder hergestellt.

Vielschichtig, mitreißend, raffiniert mit Energie und Spielfreude

„Silence Is A Bomb“ ist ein vielschichtiges Album. Dieser immer wieder anders aufgebaute Kontrast zwischen fröhlicher Musik und teilweise richtig dunklen Texten machen für mich den besonderen Reiz dieses Albums aus. Und dann die vielen Details, die einfach spannend oder eben auch subtile Anspielungen sind. Die raffiniert eingängigen Melodien in den Vocals und den Gitarren sind mit groovigen Rhythmen verbunden und Passagen, die wie unbearbeitet klingen (wie z.B. beim Opener) bilden einen eindrücklichen Kontrast zu den variationsreich arrangierten Teilen.

Das ist Rock’N Roll – aber auch nicht. Punk’N Roll – auch das allein trifft es nicht. Vor allen Dingen sind es Songs, die auch live richtig gut klingen werden.

VOLCANOVA sind eine Stoner Rock Band aus Island. Aufmerksam bin ich nicht nur auf sie geworden, weil sie Isländer sind, sondern weil ich den Namen für eine isländische Stoner Band passen fand. Zunächst habe ich „Sushi Sam“ gehört bzw. das Video gesehen. Gute Musik und eine witzige Geschichte. Da war ich neugierig auf den Rest. Und – um es vorweg zu sagen: gut, dass ich meiner Neugier gefolgt bin, denn sonst hätte ich dieses großartige Album verpasst, das am 21. August 2020 via The Sign Records veröffentlicht wird.

Riffs, Riffs, Riffs

Der Opener „Welcome“ ist instrumental und nur knapp eineinhalb Minuten lang. Und doch zeigt er, wo es langgeht: subtil psychedelisch aber immer groovend schwere Riffs

„Where’s The Time“ bietet einen schönen Einstieg durch den Bass. Dann nimmt der Song an Tempo und die Riffs bauen sich langsam aber wuchtig auf. Ein super Rocksong mit einem Beat, der einen nicht stillsitzen lässt.

„Super Duper Van“ ist ebenfalls ein Song, bei dem es richtig zur Sache geht. Basierend auf einem Riff, der auch in der Wiederholung nicht an Kraft verliert.

Und da ist er: mein absoluter Albumfavorit: „I’M Off“. So schön doomig, geeignet sowohl für laue Sommerabend wie für knackig-kalte Wintertage am Kamin! Rockig mit einem ordentlichen Schuss Sludge, gewürzt mit psychedelischen Elementen. Da greifen sie auch Anteile des Openers auf und schmücken sie ordentlich aus.

Schwere Akkorde und flirrende Gitarrenläufe

„Stoneman“ kommt mit vibrierenden Basslinien daher, die dem Song das Fundament geben. Ein ruhiger Beginn mit schweren Akkorden. Darüber wunderbare Gitarrenläufe. Die Drums halten sich im Hintergrund und geben den Saiteninstrumenten viel Freiheit und setzen dennoch gute Akzente. Die Vocals fügen sich gut ein und unterstützen die Atmosphäre, die Bass und Gitarre entworfen haben

„Sushi Sam“ – der Sushi-Dealer. Wie ich in der Ankündigung schon geschrieben habe: Im Song wird die Geschichte von Luzifer in einer menschlichen Gestalt erzählt, der Sushi essen muss, um menschlich zu bleiben. Was dann passiert, ist im Video zu sehen. Auf so eine Geschichte muss man erst einmal kommen! Ein absoluter „Gute-Laune-Song“, rasant und elektrisierend.

Mit „Mountain“ kehrt etwas Ruhe ein. Doch auch dieser Song bringt mächtige Riffs und Bassläufe, angenehme Harmonien in den Vocals, an denen wohl wieder alle drei beteiligt sind.

Schwere Riffs mit Groove und Leichtigkeit im Komplexen

Schwere Riffs, schwere und ganz schwere Riffs. So klingt „M.O.O.D.“. Sobald jedoch der Gesang einsetzt, bekommt der Song einen psychedelischen Klang. Aber nicht, um einen in andere Sphären zu entrücken. Der Song bleibt geerdet und im Rock verwurzelt. Vielleicht liegt es daran, dass VOLCANOVA eben auch bei diesem Song ordentlich Tempo machen. Dazu trägt wesentlich die groovende Gitarre bei.

Spätestens bei „Got Game“ wird deutlich, dass die Jungs auch richtig komplexe Riffs mit einer unglaublichen Leichtigkeit rüberbringen können. Und auch hier wieder großartige Melodien. Rhythmisch abwechslungsreich ist „Got Game“ ein treibender und antreibender Song.

In gewisser Weise haben sich VOLCANOVA von Song zu Song gesteigert. Die Krönung des Albums ist „Lights“. Hier finden sich noch einmal in Abwandlung die Elemente, die mir in den vorherigen Songs schon gut gefallen haben. Mit einem großartigen instrumentalen Outro ein gelungener Abschluss des Albums. Schon wegen dieses Songs lohnt es sich, das Album zu kaufen.

Ein gelungenes Debüt-Album

Stoner Rock oder Metal ist sonst nicht so meine Musik. Aber VOLCANOVA haben mich schnell gefangen genommen und letztlich absolut von sich überzeugt. Sicher liegt es daran, dass nicht nur die Geschichten, die sie erzählen, es nicht an Witz mangeln lassen, sondern sich dies auch in der Musik widerspiegelt. Außerdem spielen sie ein ordentliches Tempo und setzen die ‚typischen‘ Stoner-Elemente in einem Maß ein, dass die rockigen Parts noch optimistischer und energiegeladener wirken. Da ich es gerne komplex und atmosphärisch und dennoch kreativ und abwechslungsreich mag, hat mir „Radical Waves“ richtig gut gefallen. Ein absolut gelungenes Debüt-Album!

THE HAWKINS mit Song Nr 3: „Hilow“

Wie heißt es doch: Aller guten Dinge sind drei! Und bei der dritten Auskoppelung aus dem kommenden Album „Silence is a bomb“ von THE HAWKINS ist das so. Denn auch „Hilow“ ist eine tolle Verbindung aus Rock’n’Roll, Punk, Swing, eingängigen Hooks und fetten Riffs. Los geht’s:

Bis zur Veröffentlichung des Albums ist es nicht mehr lang. „Silence Is A Bomb“ wird am 4. September 2020 via The Sign Records als CD und auch als Vinyl herauskommen. Und wenn THE HAWKINS dann endlich ‚die Bombe platzen lassen‘, wird es vorbei sein mit der Stille.

The Sign Records feiern 5. Geburtstag – so wie metal-heads.de

The Sign Records feiern übrigens – wie metal-heads.de – in diesem Jahr ihr 5-jähriges Bestehen. Das Label aus Schweden hat überwiegend schwedische Bands unter Vertrag. Aber auch die isländischen Stoner VOLCANOVA. Die ersten beiden Alben, die The Sign Records veröffentlicht haben, sind das selbstbetitelte Debüt von HÄLLAS und „Heading For The Night“ von WHEEL IN THE SKY. Ansonsten reicht das Spektrum des Labels von Rock bis Metal. Egal, ob retro oder extrem.

Apropos VOLCANOVA

VOLCANOVA sind – wie oben schon geschrieben – eine Stoner Band aus Island. Auch sie haben sich mit The Sign Records zusammengetan und werden am 21. August 2020 ihr Debütalbum „Radical Waves“ als CD, Vinyl und natürlich auch in verschiedenen digitalen Formaten veröffentlichen. Einer meiner Favoriten ist „I’m Off“, ein doomiger Song mit Sludge-Elementen. Doch dazu mehr in der Review, die in den nächsten hier zu lesen sein wird.

VOLCANOVA haben bereits am 22. Mai 2020 einen ersten Song veröffentlicht. „Sushi Sam“ erzählt die Geschichte von Luzifer in menschlicher Gestalt, der Sushi essen muss, um menschlich zu bleiben. Und Sushi kann er in Reykjavík nur bei Sushi Sam – quasi auf dem Schwarzmarkt (!) kaufen. Hierbei von der Polizei beobachtet, gibt es – ach schaut euch einfach das Video an!  

Die vier Jungs aus Arboga in der Vestmanlands – Provinz in Schweden stehen für eine direkte und erfrischend moderne Rockmusik. Von der Grundstruktur her orientieren sich THE HAWKINS  am Rock and Roll der 60er und 70erJahre. Ihre Musik ist temporeich, druckvoll und immer wieder verspielt mit überraschenden Details. Doch so eingängig die Melodien auch sind, die Texte haben in der Regel einen sozialkritischen oder politischen Hintergrund. So hat Johannes Carlson, Frontmann der Band und für die Texte zuständig, 2018 den Song „The Astronomical Fool“ über das Erstarken der Neo-Nazi-Bewegung in Schweden geschrieben.

Ain’t Rock N Roll – it’s Punk ′N Roll

Wenn man Rock spielt und sein Debüt – Album Ain’t Rock N Roll nennt, ist das ja vielleicht ein Hinweis darauf, das es eben nicht nur um Rock ′N′ Roll geht. Auf diesem 2017 erschienen Album haben sie 10 Songs mit tanzbarem und doch aggressivem Rock versammelt, die so einige Anleihen im Blues und Punk nehmen.

THE HAWKINS verbinden ernste Texte mit viel Energie und Spielfreude, schöne Melodien mit filigraner Gitarrenarbeit. Und alles auf der Basis eines groovenden Rhythmus.

Dass sie außerdem eine mitreißende Live-Band sind, haben sie auf vielen Konzerten und Festivals gezeigt. In Deutschland waren sie mit ihren Landsleuten von CORRODED unterwegs. (Mehr dazu gibt es hier)

THE HAWKINS und The Sign Records

Im März gab die Band bekannt, dass sie bei The Sign Records unterschrieben haben und kündigten gleichzeitig an, dass ihr zweites Album mit dem Titel Silence Is A Bomb trägt am 4.September 2020 auf den Markt kommt.

Um die Wartezeit zu verkürzen und schon mal einen Vorgeschmack zu geben, haben THE HAWKINS am 8. Mai 2020 ein Video zum Song „The Roomer“ veröffentlicht. Der Song macht auf jeden Fall Lust auf mehr! Und das Video ist auch eine Nummer für sich. Doch schaut selbst:
