Scroll down for the original interview (in English)

Mein Interesse an Musik begann schon früh.

Du arbeitest offenbar schon seit 15 Jahren an deinem Soloprojekt.

Du hast sehr lange an diesem Projekt gearbeitet.

Was hast du an ihnen verändert? Was ist dein eigener Beitrag, deine persönliche Interpretation?

————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————

With the nyckelharpa at the heart of his music, JOHN STENERSEN combines ancient Nordic traditions with a distinctly dark and atmospheric sound. Known for his work with WARDRUNA and GÅTE, he has been developing his own solo project for many years, bringing traditional melodies together with drone textures, historical instruments and modern soundscapes. At the Midgardsblót-Festival, he presented the project live for the first time — alone on stage, but surrounded by a world of sounds and images.

What does Norwegian tradition sound like when viewed through a dark, modern sonic aesthetic? In this interview, he talks about his fascination with the nyckelharpa, the origins of his solo project, the unique atmosphere of Midgardsblót, and why now feels like the right moment to share his musical vision with a wider audience.

The Interview

Do you come from a (musical) family in which traditional music plays a role, or how did you first come into contact with traditional music?
No, I don’t come from a musical family. No one but me in my family plays an instrument, I’m the only one.

So was there a particular moment when you thought: I would like to play this music, too?
The interest for music started from a young age when I saw concerts and performances on TV of fiddlers and rock bands. I’ve always been drawn to the stage and music, I’ve always found that very intriguing. I think my first contact with folk music was through Annbjørg Lien and her album “Prisme”.

The nyckelharpa seems to be your instrument, as you have put it at the forefront of your solo project.
How did you come to play the instrument? Did you have lessons or a teacher? I read somewhere that you taught yourself to play the instrument.
I always wanted to play the fiddle, but I never found a teacher and it was too hard teaching myself that instrument from books, not knowing where to put your finger on a blank fretboard. It’s easier now with YouTube and stickers for your fretboard telling you where to put your finger, but back then I had nothing like that. I was at a festival in 2008 and there I met this Swedish man who talked about the nyckelharpa and I did not quite understand what it was, so he showed me a photo of it and the moment I saw that photo I knew that I can teach myself that instrument. So I searched it up on YouTube and I found one video of a woman playing the nyckelharpa and I loved the sound, because it sounds like a deep and dark Hardanger Fiddle.

So you fell in love with the sound. What happened next?
Two weeks later I drove to Uppsala to buy one. I got 15 minutes of instruction where he showed me how to hold the instrument and the bow, told me how it was tuned and showed me a scale. Then I got a pat on the shoulder and a “Good luck!”. I drove back to Norway and started practicing. It took a few years before I felt like I could say that I could play the nyckelharpa, but I got there in the end with a lot of practice.

You have apparently been working on your solo project for 15 years. How did the idea of developing a solo album come about? Does it have something to do with the instrument, given that it is traditionally played more as a solo instrument or accompanied by singing?
When I started my first band BERGTATT back in 2007 we always did instrumental songs, and I have always been composing so even on our first summer tour in 2009 we included some instrumental songs with the nyckelharpa as the main instrument. So that was when the thought of doing something solo started. So for every song I learned or every song I composed I always had the solo project in the back of my mind and I’ve been working on it on and off since then actually so it’s actually 17 years now that I think about it.

‘Tronsgårdhallingen’ – Roots in traditional music

You’ve now completed the project and the first song you released was “Tronsgårdhallingen”. Why did you choose this particular song to introduce your project? Do you have a special connection to it?
It’s a song I’ve heard for many years and it always makes people move. Either stomping their feet, dancing or in some way moving to the song, but I’ve never heard it in a dark arrangement, so I wanted to make that. That’s what I do with all my songs. I chose to start with this because it’s a well known traditional tune from Norway and I wanted to start my project with first showing my roots and honor the tradition by making my own version of this before releasing my own compositions.

The Midgardsblót-Festival is quite a special festival (at least from my perspective). Is it special for you as well? You have played there with WARDRUNA and KALANDRA, too, haven’t you?
Midgardsblót is my favourite Norwegian festival, it has such a good vibe. I have played there many times. I played there the first year with BERGTATT and again another year, and I’ve also played there with WARDRUNA and KALANDRA. This is also where I met Einar [Selvik, founder of Wardruna] for the first time, and I’ve also seen WARDRUNA play there before I joined the band.

A world of sound and images, and an enthusiastic audience

What does it mean to you to present your solo project there in particular?
I chose to release my solo project at Midgardsblót because it was the perfect spot for me to do it. I knew there were going to be a lot of people who were interested in this kind of music there, and I’m so happy about the response. There were people standing in line for over an hour waiting to get in. People were dancing, stomping their feet and clapping along to the songs so that was an amazing feeling! It went as well as I had hoped for! I got so many positive comments afterwards!

What was it like to stand on stage alone? You play additional instruments on “Tronsgårdhallingen”. How did you handle that during the show? Did you use backing tracks? What was the biggest challenge for you in that moment?
Standing alone on stage is something completely different than being on stage with a band, because you have no one to lean on. When I played this show I used backing tracks, so the only thing that was live was my nyckelharpa. I had created backing tracks with hurdy-gurdy, moraharpa, tagelharpa, harmonium, synth, frame drums and percussion from sticks, stones, bones and horns. I also created a video that’s synched to the backing tracks playing on a screen behind me. Because I’m only one person on stage it was important for me to have video to make it more interesting for the audience. It’s mainly drone shots of nature that a friend of mine made for me, and it really worked! I saw a lot of people watching the video so that was great!

You normally play in bands, so you have a direct comparison. From your experience, what is the biggest difference? Was there anything you hadn’t expected?
The biggest difference is that you have no one to lean on. No one is there with you if anything happens. You’re completely alone and you’re responsible for everything.

How did you perceive the audience’s reaction? What pleased or impressed you the most?
I was so happy when I saw people move to the music, and when people started clapping I felt I had reached them.

As you said, there was a video in the background. What role does it play? What is being shown, and which aspect of the music is it intended to emphasise?
Yes, there’s a video for every song synched to my backing track. It’s mainly drone shots of nature, but there are also some snippets of upcoming music videos. Some of them are only nature, and some of them tell a story. I will reveal more of that later as more singles are being released.

A few secrets

Is there anything you would fundamentally do differently in future shows?
I have a few secrets around this I’ll reveal later.

Secrets – I’m curious to see what they are. You have worked on the project for quite a long time. How has it developed over the years? How close is what you have presented now to the original idea? Yes, I’ve been working on it for a very long time and it’s 100% as the original idea. This project has been ready for many years, just laying in a drawer waiting for the right time to be released.

What was the decisive factor in making you take the project to an audience now, at this particular point in time? Did your success with WARDRUNA and GÅTE play a role in this?
Now was the perfect time as a lot of people now know me from these bands, so it’s much easier to get some attention around my music now compared to 15 years ago.

Unfortunately, I only know one of the songs so far. What are the other songs you performed and that will be on the album about?
All songs are instrumental. I’ll first release some traditional songs to show my roots and where I come from, and then I’ll start releasing my own music. As I’ve been composing music in some way on different instruments since I was 14 years old, I have a lot of music to choose from.

These traditional songs were passed down over a long period of time simply by being played, and each musician changed them a little. What have you changed? What is your contribution, your interpretation? Perhaps you could describe a little here what defines the songs, which instruments you have used, and how you create their distinctive sound.
Most of these songs have 2-3 themes. I have made a few themes myself to add to the songs and I have made a dark arrangement around the melodies. This arrangement consists mainly of old nordic instruments, but I’ve also added a deep dark synth. It’s mainly a dark drone throughout the songs consisting of Hurdy-gurdy, harmonium and synth. The pulse is a frame drum and the backbeat is a mix of moraharpa, tagelharpa and nyckelharpa. The percussion is a wooden shaker, sticks, stones, bones and horns. All of these instruments and sounds create a dark atmosphere around the nyckelharpa.

A sombre atmosphere – that’s how I’d like to listen to this music

“Tronsgårdhallingen” was and is traditionally played on the fiddle in folk music. When adapted for the nyckelharpa, the sound and the overall impression change. The music sounds darker and more sombre. One of your aims is also to convey a dark atmosphere. Why do you feel this suits the song better? Why does a darker atmosphere feel more appropriate to you?
I listen to dark music, I always have, so it felt very natural to me to create dark music. I also have never heard these songs this way before. This is the way I want to hear these songs myself, so I wanted to create the version of these songs that I like best.

How do you manage to preserve the tradition while also remaining authentic? Authentic in the sense that it is your music. Or, put another way: are songs that have been passed down through many generations timeless precisely because their basic structure remains intact, while each generation “colours” them in a way that reflects its own spirit of the age?
I think everyone who plays and uses these songs are tradition keepers. They all help keep these songs and the tradition alive. I hope to bring this music out of Norway and let the people of Europe discover these songs and this tradition.

A look ahead to the 2027 tour

You will be going on tour. Which countries/cities will you be performing in?
I plan to go on tour in 2027 and I’ll reveal the countries and cities later.

“Tronsgårdhallingen” by John Stenersen

John Stenersen launches his solo project with “Tronsgårdhallingen”

The Norwegian musician John Stenersen, whom many of you will probably know as a moraharpa player with WARDRUNA, unveiled his solo project on 5 August 2026 with “Tronsgårdhallingen”.
He has spent around 15 years developing this project and creating a new and distinctive sound.

The idea behind the project is to combine traditional Nordic folk music with modern arrangements, bringing it to the contemporary dance floor while also appealing to an alternative crossover audience.
For his first release, he chose one of the best-known melodies associated with the traditional Halling dance. The Halling is a dance featuring various established sequences of steps, with dancers sometimes incorporating highly athletic movements into their performances.

The origins of “Tronsgårdhallingen” can be traced back to Thorvald Tronsgård, a well-known and highly respected fiddler from Folldal. Folldal lies near the Rondane mountain range in the highlands of southern Norway. Tronsgård’s music shaped his home region for almost a century, and “Tronsgårdhallingen” is regarded as the most famous melody he left behind.

Preserving the traditional core while reinterpreting it

John Stenersen has retained the melody and reinterpreted it with a different instrumentation. While the piece was originally performed on a fiddle, Stenersen plays the melody on the nyckelharpa, giving it a distinctly different sound.
On a fiddle, the pitch is altered by the player’s fingers shortening the strings directly against the fingerboard. On the nyckelharpa, by contrast, the pitch is changed using keys.
The notes sound more defined, as their pitches are precisely determined by the keys. The nyckelharpa also owes much of its characteristic sound to its sympathetic strings. These are not played directly with the bow; instead, they are set into vibration by the notes being played, creating a continuous “drone effect”.

This alone contributes to the full, dark sound of “Tronsgårdhallingen”. The nyckelharpa is also accompanied by tagelharpa and harmonium, adding even greater depth and volume. A frame drum and various other percussion instruments, together with the tempo, provide the rhythmic accents that make the piece suitable for dancing.

From tradition to Nordic folk

In this form, “Tronsgårdhallingen” is both an interpretation of the traditional piece and a ‘Nordic folk’- track in its own right. The repetition of individual melodic phrases, the atmospheric layers of synthesiser, the drone of the nyckelharpa and the deep beats of the frame drum give the piece a dark and hypnotic character.
Stones, sticks and bones used as percussion instruments add an archaic quality.
At the same time, the track sounds modern and, thanks to its dynamic tempo, is surely just as danceable as the original.

There is also a video accompanying the track. It not only showcases the landscape from which the original piece originates but also reinforces the track’s distinctly ‘Nordic’ atmosphere.

I really like the way John Stenersen has approached and interpreted this traditional dance tune, and I am looking forward to hearing more from the project.

“Tronsgårdhallingen” is only the beginning. At the Midgardsblot Festival, John Stenersen will perform the piece live for the first time. He will then release further songs and embark on a European tour in spring and summer 2027.

John Stenersen startet mit „Tronsgårdhallingen“ sein Solo-Projekt

(english version below)

John Stenersen Launches Solo Project with Debut Single „Tronsgårdhallingen“

Many of you will probably know John Stenersen as the Moraharpa player of WARDRUNA.
On August 5, 2026, he will unveil his solo project with the release of „Tronsgårdhallingen“. The official premiere and release show will take place on August 13, 2026, at the Midgardsblot Festival in Borre, Norway.

While many fans know John Stenersen through WARDRUNA, his musical journey extends far beyond the band. He also performed with GÅTE during the group’s appearance as Norway’s representative at the Eurovision Song Contest and was the driving force behind BERGTATT, a project that fused traditional folk with a rock-based sound. Throughout his career, John Stenersen has collaborated with artists from a wide range of musical backgrounds, including KALANDRA, while also composing music for films and video games.

Most recently, I featured the album „I“ by THE THIRD CIRCLE, whose unique approach combines folk traditions with modern elements. Their use of ancient Nordic instruments—such as the nyckelharpa, moraharpa, tagelharpa, and hurdy-gurdy—creates a sound that is at once organic, experimental, and epic.

Contemporary Music Reinterpreting Traditional Elements

Now, with „Tronsgårdhallingen,“ John presents the first release from his solo project.

John says:

This is one of my absolute favourite tunes! It’s an old halling that originated in the mist-covered mountains of the Rondane massif in the heart of Norway. I haven’t found any evidence that this melody has ever been recorded on the nyckelharpa before. That’s why I’m convinced this release is a world premiere.

The tune is one of the best-known melodies associated with the traditional halling, a Norwegian folk dance featuring a series of established steps, often enhanced with impressive athletic movements performed by the dancers.
The origins of „Tronsgårdhallingen“ can be traced back to Thorvald Tronsgård, a well-known and highly respected fiddler from Folldal, a village located near the Rondane massif. For nearly a century, Tronsgård’s music shaped the musical traditions of his home region, and „Tronsgårdhallingen“ is regarded as the most famous melody he left behind.

Like much traditional folk music, halling tunes were originally passed down orally through repeated performance, preserving them from one generation to the next. Each musician who played the melody contributed their own interpretation and creativity, allowing the music to evolve while maintaining its core identity.
John Stenersen embraces this tradition with his own interpretation. His goal is to preserve the original character of the melody while giving it his own distinctive sonic identity.
To achieve this, he combines traditional instruments—including the nyckelharpa, tagelharpa, hurdy-gurdy and harmonium—with synthesizers, jaw harp and an extensive range of percussion. Alongside frame drums, he also incorporates sticks, stones and even bones, reconnecting with some of humanity’s oldest forms of rhythm and storytelling. The result is a sound that feels earthy, immersive and cinematic in equal measure.

The Philosophy Behind the Project

John Stenersen describes the philosophy behind the project as follows:

The goal is to bring these ancient Nordic folk songs onto the modern dance floor, reach an alternative crossover audience, and get the whole room moving.

„Tronsgårdhallingen“ marks the beginning of a project that aims to combine traditional Nordic folk music with contemporary arrangements, introducing these timeless melodies to a new audience.

Following the release show at the Midgardsblot Festival, he plans to release additional songs before embarking on a European tour in the spring and summer of 2027.

(scroll down for english version)

Kjell Braaten releases “Pine”, the second song from the upcoming album

Today we have the second single from “Flok”, the upcoming album by Kjell Braaten.

After “Solace”, “Pine” is the next song that gives a preview of the album “Flok”, which will be released this summer.

Kjell Braaten is a composer and specialist for Nordic instruments. He has been involved in bands such as NEBALA, WARDRUNA and EHWAZ and has worked with many other artists and projects such as Christine Kammerer and NEMUER. His musical spectrum also includes sound design and music for films (e.g. for the series “Vikings Valhalla”).

Kjell Braaten plays, among other things, reconstructions of instruments from the period around 600 AD, the Viking Age and the Middle Ages. In addition to drums and horns, it is lyres that characterize the sound of his music.

Ancient structures modern sounds

“Pine” gets its special sound from the Sutton Hoo lyre, a lyre from the early 7th century that was found during the excavation of a ship. It is a large lyre made of maple, with strings running parallel to a soundboard like a guitar.
The horsehair strings produce an organic, warm and full sound.

In the song “Pine”, however, it is not only the Sutton Hoo lyre that accompanies the vocals, but also the organistrum, an early form of hurdy-gurdy, as well as drums and bass guitar.
And so timeless, historical sounds and structures are combined with modern folk elements

What Kjell says about the upcoming album “Flok”: „The record will be quite different from what I have done in recent years but will return more to where I started—just with a different approach. A kind of bridge between where I began and where I am now. The songs are about life, nature and old traditions and thoughts. They are still mainly played on old Norse instruments such as organistrum, kravikslyre, moraharpa and the like“.

“Gran” /“Pine” from a mythological perspective

As an evergreen tree, the spruce is traditionally seen as a symbol of longevity and constancy. In the dark winter months, it has always been a symbol of hope for spring and survival of the dark times.
In some traditions, the spruce is also seen as a symbol of cosmic balance and protection against darkness and chaos.

“Pine” looks at the tree both from this mythological perspective and through the eyes of a child seeking solace under its branches.

The roots reach deep, the moss is soft and the tears are absorbed by the earth.

I like the poetic, somehow comforting text by Tove Hassel, which Carina Dulea has translated into English. (Like “Solace”, “Pine” is also available in a version with the original lyrics).

The cover (designed by Fatima Akerson) is also a beautiful image in its own right.

(for english version scroll down)

A time once meant for blooming flowers
marks instead a battle’s spring….

….While night falls, in blazing heavens
traced by endless lights of loss

_________________

„Solace“ – A Song (Not Just) for Friends in Ukraine

Today marks three years since Putin’s Russia invaded Ukraine and started the war. Three years of terror, displacement, destruction, and death. And now, an American president who distorts or ignores the facts, blames Ukraine for this war, and seeks to negotiate a ‘peace’ without Ukraine’s involvement.

For Those Who Suffer Under the Greed for Power

“Solace” was originally released last year in Norwegian under the title “Trøyst”.

On this third anniversary, Kjell Braaten, who has contributed to bands such as WARDRUNA and NEBALA as a specialist in Nordic instruments, releases the song “Solace” (“Trøyst”), which he wrote for friends and all people in Ukraine.

He likely had the Konon Rocks – film team particularly in mind. Together with actors from Ukraine, they created the video for “Laþu” by NEBALA. From this collaboration, friendships and creative relationships developed. However, plans for further work together were hindered by Russia’s war of aggression. At the start of the Russian invasion, the Ukrainian film team worked alongside international journalists to document the horrors of war.

Solace – The Search for Security and Trust

For “Solace”, the lyrics by Tove Hassel have now been adapted (by Carina Dulea) into English.

I asked Kjell why it was important to him to release the song in English now.
He said: “Three years have passed since the invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022, and hopefully, the song can now bring some comfort during difficult days in difficult times—especially in a language that those it was written for can understand.”
He also wants more people to grasp the message of the song. And this is easier with English lyrics, as more people understand English than Norwegian.

Tove Hassel wrote the lyrics shortly after the war in Ukraine began. However, they are not only about this war but about all those, who live under unbearable conditions because of others’ greed for power.
Yet, the lyrics do not just describe the horrors of war—they also remind us of how life should be.

A time once meant for blooming flowers
marks instead a battle’s spring…
… While night falls, in blazing heavens
traced by endless lights of loss

from „solace“

The way, Kjell Braaten has set this to music, and the way he sings the lyrics so gently and vulnerably, is deeply moving – especially remembering the images from Ukraine and other war zones.
Within parts of the lyrics reflecting on how the world could and should be,his voice grows strong and resolute.
The interlude featuring the lyre, as well as the longing yet hopeful chorus, sounds comforting.

By immersing oneself in the music and lyrics, one experiences a mix of yearning and serenity, alongside anger, grief, and hope. Kjell Braaten has an extraordinary ability to captivate listeners with his voice alone, while the subtle accompaniment powerfully conveys sorrow, longing, and hope.

New Album Coming This Summer

“Trøyst”/”Solace” was originally meant to be released last autumn as the first single from a new album. However, due to extensive touring and various other reasons, it was not possible to complete the album by then.
The new album is now set for release this summer.

To shorten the wait, there will be two more singles following “Trøyst” / “Solace”.

Kjell on the new album: „The record will be quite different from what I have done in recent years but will return more to where I started—just with a different approach. They will still primarily be played on Old Norse instruments such as the organistrum, Kravik lyre, Moraharpa, and similar.”

Today marks the third anniversary of the war in Ukraine. And „Solace“ can accompany moments of reflection.

Eine Reise jenseits des Alltäglichen

Anders Odden (s.

THE THIRD CIRCLE – was bedeutet der Name für euch?

Was wurde dadurch möglich?

Was ermöglicht die Musik?

Stay tuned and trip out.

english-original

A journey beyond the ordinary

Anders Odden (known from CADAVER, CELTIC FROST) is a co-founder of THE THIRD CIRCLE, a trio completed by John Stenersen (WARDRUNA, among others) and Birger Mistereggen.
In November 2024, they released their debut EP, „I“
When Anders Odden became critically ill in 2020, it changed his relationship with music. He began working with analogue synthesisers and started recording natural sounds, particularly in the forest. His goal was to create music that felt deeply personal, meditative, and even therapeutic.

In our interview, Anders shared how these ideas took shape with THE THIRD CIRCLE, how their music connects to psychedelic experiences with mushrooms, the role of (Norwegian) nature in the process, and how the ‘modern world’ has influenced it all.

A different relationship to music

Hey Anders, thanks for taking the time to talk to me today about THE THIRD CIRCLE and your music. As I mentioned in the review of “I”, the three of you have quite different musical backgrounds.
Where did you meet?
John and I was introduced to each other at the Inferno Festival in 2023. We had never met before this and that kicked us into the idea of having a jam together.

How did you discover that you could develop (musical) ideas together?
We organised a jam in my studio a month after the initial meeting and we just experimented with some loose ideas before we cracked the code on how to make music together. Prior to this I had a loose idea of an organic ambient project, but the sounds that John brought with him made this idea possible.

What made you to take it seriously enough to create THE THIRD CIRCLE, the EP “I”, and further songs?
We recorded 10-11 different jams that we then organised into songs and we spent a while trying to find the perfect sound. In the beginning we had some simple electronic beats holding it all together, but when percussionist and multi instrumentalist Birger Mistereggen joined everything just came together. We use organic sound for all the percussion and the feeling of this being old but modern came together.

The perfect sound for a mushroom trip

THE THIRD CIRCLE – what does the name mean for you?
The name means total freedom to make the music we want.

How did you come up with it?
It was the name of the track that lead us to our sound.

How would you describe your music? Or rather: what effect do you hope it will have on the listener?
Our music was initially made to be the perfect soundtrack to a mushroom trip. When you get all the three EPs playing together this is meant to fell like one huge piece of music that you can meditate to. This music is for people who have time to listen to music in long form and create an inner travel away form modern world.

What in the modern world makes it necessary to leave it from time to time or at least create distance?
The world of technology that keep our attention to everybody else’s life instead of living our own lives is the distractions we all need to unplug from more. I am all for technology and see the benefits for sure, but SoMe has become the trap for your mind now. I recall a time where we never counted likes, fans, streams etc to judge value in art. This is the enemy of being creative. To measure it against other things that get more attention by more people.

You use both modern and old/traditional instruments. What has this made possible? I think that in your case, combining ‘old’ and modern instruments isn’t just a stylistic choice or a way to create a special sound.
The aim here is to make music I like to listen to. What I use to come to the end result is a matter of what the track needs. We have no rules as such, but it should sound organic at core, but we are not traditionalist. We have no intention of pleasing any special dogma of music listener, but create our own world of sounds.

Tired of modernity and nature’s influence

What do you think: does the growing interest in rock, folk, and even metal music that incorporates old instruments stem from something like fatigue with modernity?
I dont know. I never look to others for inspiration. I am just interested in what sounds great to my ears. I never think of what else is going on as I do not pay attention to music in that way.

When it comes to music from the North, people often ask about the influence of nature. I’m asking because there are also natural sound recordings in your songs. What role do these recordings play in your songs and in what you aim to offer the listener?
Our music is the result of our heritage coming from Norway. The natural sound of rain, streams, birds, wind etc is in our music. The feeling of solitude is more important than the nature itself. We are born alone and die alone. It’s a reflection of life on this crazy planet.

Can you describe how nature/experiences in nature have influenced you and affected the way you compose music? Compared to man-made environments.
As I said, solitude is the prime reason and motivation for this music. We aim to reflect what is inside all humans and the nature part of it is just where we live – in the cold rainforest of the north.

Focus on what suits your own life

A life-threatening illness disrupted your ‘normal’ routines and gave you – as you once said – a new perspective. What did this new perspective focus on?
I focus on what works for me and what I wanna do in life 100% without looking to what else is going on. I dont need a scene of people giving me feedback on my music to be happy. I used to think it was important to travel the world and play music for a live audience, but the creative part of being in the studio making the music is now my most important outlet.

Do you leave it to chance whether you find something or what you find? Or do you find because you are curious and try things out?
The latter.

It sounds as if perfection or the process of perfection prevents you from finding the music you want to express yourself with.
There are no true rules in music. If you free yourself from trying to be technical pitch perfect and lean towards working on the moods you try to express you will find something more interesting to listen to.

Has THE THIRD CIRCLE given you new or other opportunities?
Yes. The fact that Birger Mistereggen is my fathers cousin makes this project very special. I have never had a band with a relative before and that feels great.

Finding what is important at the moment

“I” feels like music that breaks through everyday noise, with cycles and repetitions. What role do cycles play for you?
I used to live in cycles of making albums, going on tour and then making new albums. Now I am free to just make music without any business plans and that is much better. I try to live in the moment more and let all long term plans be whatever they may be. Nothing is important enough to aim for that you cannot find in the moment.

Are natural cycles something we as humans should pay more attention to? I get the impression that also in Norway, more people are reconnecting with cycles in nature and daily life.
We live in a part of the world where the seasons are very distinct. I think this create its of identity and we treasure each season more than people who live in constant pleasant weather conditions.

The track titles on “I” leave the content completely open, as the songs are only numbered. Why did you choose to do this and decide against including lyrics?
If you have ever experienced a mushroom session you would understand as words in a language requires attention to context and decide the mood for you. If you strip it away all you have left if the feeling and that is the key to make it universal.

Is it about letting the sounds speak for themselves, allowing the listener to immerse themselves fully in the music? No specific thoughts or experiences are suggested, leaving it entirely open.
You get it.

Such an experience is possible without a mushroom session, right?
Yes, its possible to make an inner journey without the usage of medicine, but that is the challenge. To let yourself immerse entirely into the music without distraction. Most music consummation is in the background now unless its very loud. If you just want to relax with this music that’s all good too.

A niche project for a specific target group

You used psychedelic therapy and were therefore looking for a suitable soundtrack for it.
What does the music make possible? Is it something you can ‚hold on to‘? Like an ‚anchor‘ so you don’t get lost in the expansion of consciousness?
This topic is hard to explain. I suggest that anyone who is curious about this just get themselves educated in the topic and see if it can help you in any way

THE THIRD CIRCLE’s music aims to be meditative and even therapeutic.
What role do tempo, melody, and rhythm play in achieving this? What did you focus on to reach this goal?
When I found my way back to life after surviving cancer I used psychedelic therapy. Through this experience I was looking for the perfect sound track and realised I had to make this myself. Here we are with this project which is perfect for this, for me, and others with the same mindset. This is a niche and very specific target, but it’s what sparked the whole project.

At times, the music felt as if it melt into sounds. At the same time, there was a sense of something constant and continuous. Are the drone tone, repetition, and spiral-like structure elements that counteract the dissolution or fading away of the music?
Yes!

Further Eps will follow

If I’ve understood correctly, there will be more EPs to come. Why did you divide them like this instead of releasing an album with all the songs?
If it was up to me we would have released all the music as one big album and that is maybe what this ends up to be, but the length of the songs are not compatible with the way an audience get music nowadays. The music should have been released as a podcast instead maybe.

Will you also be performing live?
I would love to, but this is also just a music business matter. We are not entertainers so we would have to find an audience who want to spend money to listen to us playing. I come from the world of metal where the only trade is to be noisy and loud. This music is not made for that kind of circuit and I have no idea where to even begin to find out where to play. I aim to create more trippy music for the few that needs the same kind of trip as me (and us) and just let the few that like it be happy.

Oh, I think a lot of people will disagree with you. You have played in various bands such as CADAVER, ORDER, ULVEHUNGER and live with SATYRICON, CELTIC FROST, was about more than being loud and noisy, wasn’t it?
I guess that is a matter of perspective. There is not meditative value as such in metal music, but a sense of mystery and excitement in the music of the bands I have worked with is a read thread, yes.

The last word belongs to you at this point: is there anything else you would like to add?

The first 3 EPs will only be the beginning of a longer trip. Stay tuned and trip out.
And thank you for taking the time to tell us more about the music of THE Third CIRCLE.

Thank you for taking the time to tell us more about the music of THE Third CIRCLE.

„Steh still und schlag Wurzeln“

Einar Selvik – Gesang, Taglharpa, Kravik Leier, Bukkehorn
Lindy-Fay Hella – Gesang
Arne Sandvoll – Percussion, Hintergrundgesang
Sondre Veland – Percussion, Hintergrundgesang
Eilif Gundersen – Bukkehorn, Lure, Flöte, Hintergrundgesang
HC Dalgaard – Schlagzeug, Percussion, Hintergrundgesang
John Stenersen – Moraharpa

THE THIRD CIRCLE: „I“

„I“ : Pulsierende Klanglandschaften

„The 1st“, The 2nd“ und „The 3rd“

Eindringliche, spannende, erdige Klangspektren

THE THIRD CIRCLE released their debut EP „I“ on November 15, 2024 via ByNorse Music

The trio THE THIRD CIRCLE consists of Anders Odden (CADAVER, CELTIC FROST), John Stenersen (WARDRUNA, GÅTE, BERGTATT), and Birger Mistereggen, musicians with experience in very different musical directions.

A different relationship to music and a journey beyond the everyday

When Anders Odden became life-threatening ill in 2020, he developed a new relationship with music. This made him to want to make music personal, meditative and even therapeutic. He experimented with analogue synthesizers and collected natural sounds by making recordings, especially in the forest.

Then he met John Stenersen, who plays traditional string instruments such as the nyckelharpa in his bands. Now the question was how analogue synthesizers, bass and hurdy-gurdy or nyckelharpa sound together.

The last to join was Birger Mistereggen, who specializes in Nordic folklore. He added further sounds and rhythms with various percussion instruments, especially the rope drum, voice and jaw harp.

THE THIRD CIRCLE want their music to be understood as an opportunity to pause, reflect and immerse yourself in a journey beyond the everyday. And I think they have succeeded in doing this with the three pieces on the EP „I“.

„I“: Pulsating soundscapes

The three pieces lead us through landscapes of old and modern sounds that flow into one another, pulsate, condense and then float away to dissolve.
But they come back and develop into new forms. It is like the cycle of water in the sea, which evaporates after powerful movement, only to come back as rain and become part of the sea again.

The basis of the pieces of music is drone tones that simultaneously calm and build tension. The tones of the analogue synthesizer, the rhythms of the various percussion instruments and then the sounds and melody of the nyckelharpa are laid on these basic resonances.
The jawharp amplifies the basic tone or flashes out in many places from the broad overall sound.

“The 1st”, “The 2nd” and “The 3rd”

“The 1st” is permeated by a basic tone over which the melody of the nyckelharpa floats. The percussion instruments and the bass, on the other hand, form the solid ground.
The instruments are in dialogue and sometimes it sounds as if they are dancing with each other.

The repetition, which takes up the various elements in loops and circles and thereby changes them, is already very clear here as an essential element. The track builds up in this way until a dense and intense passage occurs at 5:30.
Then the melody from the beginning is taken up again. It is as if the sound opens up wide again until it slowly dissolves in the sound of the rain.

The second piece, “The 2nd”, begins with the sound of the rain, accompanied by a drone tone. This time too, the sound builds up slowly: the melody runs like a thread through this passage and the other instruments are gradually added.
The sound becomes denser and denser and almost vibrates. The distorted sounds expand the spectrum. And this combination of old, somehow familiar melodies and distorted sounds is really new and unusual in this form.

„The 3rd“ is a piece that is initially meditative in its calm. For me it is the most interesting piece on the EP because I really like the dynamics of the rhythmic elements and I find the simultaneity of dissonances and warm sounds very exciting.

Haunting, exciting, earthy sound spectra

„I“ is an exciting EP in many ways. THE THIRD CIRCLE have lived up to their claim of creating haunting and meditative soundscapes.I particularly like how they use the principle of repetition and variation. The sounds are vibrating spirals that rise and expand continuously. Be it by expanding the sound spectrum or by adding more and more rhythmic elements.
And so the tension increases, which is created by the interaction of the earthy sounds of the old instruments and the electronic synthesizer sounds. I think it’s great that both the synthesizers sound earthy and the old instruments sound spherical and dissonant.

From now on, I will also hear the jaw harp as an instrument in a different way. Because here it is performed with virtuosity, as a drone tone or as an accent that brings lightness.

Modern, psychedelic and yet deeply rooted in the concrete

Moreover, I almost always had the impression that I was listening to musicians who were trying things out and giving the music or the sounds the space to develop on their own. It’s like an exchange, a conversation – just without words.
Because there are no lyrics and the titles don’t give you any direction for thoughts, you have the opportunity to let the sounds affect you completely freely.

The sounds of the instruments and nature that are woven into the pieces are like memories of distant events and early longings that you can’t really grasp.

And yes, the pieces are definitely psychedelic, because they make it possible for the boundaries between yourself and the outside world to blur. Nevertheless, the connection with nature, the roots in the concrete, are noticeable.

The video that comes with this EP makes this visible in a different form.
