MÚR sind eine Band aus Island. Am 22. November 2024 veröffentlichen sie ihr selbstbetiteltes Debütalbum „Múr“ via Century Media Records.

2022 haben sie die Wacken Metal Battle in Island gewonnen und belegten im internationalen Finale bei Wacken Open Air den vierten Platz.

MÚR verbinden atmosphärische und in gewisser Weise apokalyptische Klanglandschaften, die von Naturgewalten inspiriert sind, mit rohen Strukturen zu einem facettenreichen Sound, in den neben jazzigen und elektronischen Klängen Elemente aus weiteren Genres einfließen. So ist eine faszinierende Mischung aus Post-Rock und progressiver Musik entstanden. Neben Gitarren, Bass und Schlagzeug nutzen sie Synthesizer und Keytar.

Mauer aus Klang und Emotionen

MÚR heißt Mauer – also kann man sich vorstellen, dass ihr Sound aus vielen Steinen zusammengesetzt ist. Sie selbst beschreiben ihre Musik als „eine Mauer aus Klang und Emotionen“, der Interpretationsspielräume bietet.

Ich bin mir nicht sicher, ob es unsere Aufgabe ist, sie vollständig zu definieren, da die Leute aus dem Erleben ganz unterschiedliche Dinge mitzunehmen scheinen, je nachdem, wer sie sind und was sie an Musik mögen.

Kári Haraldson (MÚR)

Frontman Kári Haraldson sagt dazu: „Ich bin mir nicht sicher, ob es unsere Aufgabe ist, sie vollständig zu definieren, da die Leute aus dem Erleben ganz unterschiedliche Dinge mitzunehmen scheinen, je nachdem, wer sie sind und was sie an Musik mögen.“

Ihr Video zu „Heimsslit“ macht das deutlich: Die Musik ist dicht und dunkel, intensiv mit eindringlichen Vocals und unerbittlichen Rhythmen. Der Text handelt von Elend und Zerstörung. „Heimsslit“ kann mit „Weltuntergang“ übersetzt werden oder auch wortwörtlich mit „die Welt,die zerreißt“. Das Video zeigt verstörende Bilder, die von verschiedenen Mythen inspiriert zu sein scheinen.

MÚR sagen über „Heimsslit“, dass es zu einer Vision einer Welt  inspiriert, die aus den Nähten platzt.“ Es geht ihnen  aber nicht einfach um dystopische Gedanken zur physischen Welt, sondern dass auch im eigenen Denken, etwas auseinanderfällt.

Von den Anfängen über die Wacken Metal Battle bis zum Debüt-Album

Alle Musiker von MÚR haben sehr früh begonnen, ein Instrument zu spielen.
Kári Haraldson hat bereits mit fünf Jahren Schlagzeugunterricht bekommen und als Teenager mit dem Komponieren begonnen. 2021 schreib er die Musik zu dem Film „Harmur“ und 2024 zur Fernsehserie „Gestir“. Jetzt ist nicht nur für die Vocals zuständig, sondern auch für Synthesizer und Keytar.
Árni Jökull Guðbjartsson steuert seine Energie und Erfahrungen als Drummer in Punk- und Hardcore-Bands. Er war nicht von Anfang an dabei, sondern nahm den Platz von Sigurður Jakobsson ein, der nach dem Wacken Metal Battle die Band aus persönlichen Gründen verließ.
Bassist Ívar Klausen, der zunächst Jazz-Gitarre studierte, hat mit seiner Band DÓPAMÍN bereits mehrere Platten veröffentlicht.

Die beiden Gitarristen Hilmir Árnason und Jón Ísak Ragnarsson lernten Gitarre bei Þráinn Árni Baldvinsson (Gitarrist von SKÁLMÖLD), der wohl auch einen großen Anteil daran hatte, dass MÚR entstanden ist, da er Kári, Hilmir und Ívar miteinander bekannt machte.

Es haben sich also Musiker mit unterschiedlichem Hintergrund zusammengetan, um genreübergreifenden Metal mit progressiven Anteilen zu spielen und dabei Wert auf Klang und Emotionen zu legen.

Release und Tour

Am 22. November 2024 erscheint ihr Album „Múr“ und dann gehen sie auf Tour und spielen auch Shows in Deutschland:

Wenn ich mir die Anzahl der Veröffentlichungen im Bereich Metal und Folk allein aus den skandinavischen Ländern anschaue, war es ein sehr produktives Jahr 2023. Aber nicht nur was die Anzahl angeht, sondern auch die Qualität.

Hier eine Auswahl zu treffen, ist mir schwergefallen. Die gewählte Strategie: für jeden Monat ein Album. Das hat die Auswahl etwas erleichtert. Die ausgewählten Veröffentlichungen sind die, die mich auch nach häufigem Hören immer noch in ihren Bann ziehen.

Es war nicht nur Musik, die mir im vergangenen Jahr viele gute Momente gegeben hat, sondern auch die Interviews, die ich mit Musikern aus verschiedenen Bereichen machen konnte.

Vielen Dank an Toumas Rounakari, Benny Braaten, Þráinn Baldvinsson und Jón Geir Jóhannsson von SKÁLMÖLD, Leo Wichmann (WORDS OF FAREWELL) und Stefan Matschke (AGENDA)!

Viele Gedanken und Fragen, über die wir gesprochen haben, werden mich auch in der kommenden Zeit begleiten und beschäftigen. Sich zuhören, miteinander reden, sich streiten aber immer wieder aufeinander zugehen, andere Meinungen und Unterschiede aushalten können, Verschiedenheit als Bereicherung sehen, immer wieder über Bewertungen in jeder Form nachdenken – das sind Themen, die in allen Interviews in der einen oder anderen Weise zur Sprache kamen. Sie werde ich – genauso wie die Musik – mit ins nächste Jahr nehmen.

Und nun zur Musik

Januar – NEBALA

Über NEBALA habe ich im letzten Jahr oft geschrieben, da ihnen meiner Meinung nach Großartiges gelungen ist. Ausgehend vom Album „Lustuz Laþu Wōþuz Alu“, bei dem Jonas Lorentzen (ex – HEILUNG) nicht nur mit den Musikern Sebastian Gainsborough (aka Vessel vom Manchester Collective) und Kjell Braaten (Wardruna, Origami Galaktika) sondern auch mit Fachleuten aus den Bereichen Vorchristliche Religion und Philosophie zusammengearbeitet hat.

Die Texte aus den nordischen Sagas bilden in Verbindung mit Elementen indischer und europäischer Philosophie die Basis für die Betrachtung der Sexualität aus einer spirituellen und mythologischen Sicht.

Traditionelle Instrumente wie Leiern, Hörnern, Tagelharpa, Organistrum, tibetische Klangschalen sowie verschiedene Formen des Kehlgesangs formen NEBALAs indo-nordischen Klang, der das Besondere dieser Lieder ausmacht.

Auf dem CASTLEFEST spielten sie zum ersten Mal live und boten den Zuschauern ein wahrhaft magisches Erlebnis.

Das Konzert auf dem MIDGARDSBLÓT-Festival wurde aufgezeichnet und ist als Album erhältlich. Außerdem könnt ihr euch die Show HIER ansehen.

Im Januar 2023 veröffentlichten NEBALA mit „Skiñañariaz“ ein erstes Video der Show auf dem MIDGARDSBLÓT-Festival. Das Album und alle Videos wurden dann im Mai veröffentlicht. Hier haben Fieke Van Den Hurk bei der Aufnahme sowie Kjell Braaten und Ivar Sandøy beim Mixen und Master ebenso gute Arbeit geleistet, wie Sara Bøgh bei der künstlerischen Ausgestaltung des Videos. Daher sind die Videos nicht nur eine Dokumentation der Show, sondern ein Medium, das die Wirkung der Lieder durch fantastische Bilder verstärkt.

Februar – PIL & BUE

Im Februar brachten PIL & BUE (das sind Petter Carlsen und Gøran Johansen) das Album „Special Agents“ heraus. PIL & BUE (Pfeil und Bogen) klingen auch zu zweit wie eine vollständige Band. Sie machen kraftvolle, düstere bis lustige Rockmusik. Passend zu ihrem  Bandname treffen sie mit ihren brachialen Rhythmen und durchdringenden Melodien pfeilschnell direkt ins Ziel. Einflüsse von Thrash Metal und Post Rock bieten abwechslungsreichen Hörgenuss.

März – Kjell Braaten

Auch von Kjell Braaten, der in diesem Monat die EP „The Cabin“ herausgebracht hat,  habe ich häufiger berichtet und seine Alben „Ferd“, „Bronseplassen“ und „Blóta“ vorgestellt

Bei „The Cabin“ gefällt mir die Zusammenstellung der Stücke sehr gut. Das Spektrum reicht von der intensiven Leichtigkeit einer Improvisation auf einem Instrument (Langspill) über orchestrale Klänge bis zur komplex arrangierten Variation des Songs „Acoustic Oscillator“.

Der Song „The Cabin“ war eine Auftragsarbeit und ursprünglich als Soundtrack für einen düsteren Animationsfilm vom Typ „Hanzel und Grethel“ komponiert. „Acoustic Oscillator“ ist ein Remake des Songs „Universal Oscillator“ von THE QUANTUM FIELD TRIP.

Kjell Braaten komponiert neben seiner eigenen Musik auch für Theater und Film (zuletzt für die Serie „Vikings Valhalla“).

Im Verlauf des Monats hat er mit „Ragnarok“ und „Jotun“ weitere Songs veröffentlicht, die er ursprünglich für Filmprojekte komponiert hatte. Ich finde es interessant zu hören, was neben ‚seiner eigenen Musik‘ entstanden ist.

Die Musik unterscheidet sich einerseits deutlich von dem, was er in den letzten Jahren unter seinem Namen veröffentlicht hat. Andererseits verwendet er auch hier wieder Instrumente aus der ganzen Welt, was sich wie ein roter Faden durch seine musikalische Arbeit zieht. 

April – SEVEN IMPALE

Kennt ihr die Jazz-Progger von SEVEN IMPALE? Ich habe mich sehr gefreut, als sie nach sieben (!) Jahren endlich wieder ein Album herausgebracht haben. Dass es so lange gedauert hat, hatte damit zu tun, dass alle Mitglieder „mit dem Leben beschäftigt“ waren. So war Stian Økland nach seinem Bachelor in klassischem Gesang in Opernproduktionen in Europa und zuletzt in Hongkong zu hören und Håkon Vinje betätigt bei ENSLAVED die Tasten.

Meine Vorfreude hat sich nach dem ersten Hören von „Summit“ in Freude verwandelt, da die Songs direkt mitnehmen in einen schweren metallisch durchzogenen Jazz’n Prog-Rock. Mit dem Pathos, den Stian in seinen Gesang legt und Håkons freejazz Eskapaden ist das schwere Kost, die sie aber immer wieder auflockern.  

Mai – NEBALA (live)

Hier erschien das eingangs schon erwähnte Album „Live at the Blót“ von NEBALA.  Mehr dazu könnt ihr hier lesen.

Juni – IMMORTAL

Im Juni hieß es dann: „I am immortal“ oder vielmehr: „Ich bin IMMORTAL“. Denn nach Diskrepanzen zunächst mit Abbath (Vocals) und später mit Horgh (Drums) hat Demonaz das Ruder übernommen und das Album quasi allein gestaltet. Ob das gut funktioniert hat? Ja, denn „War Against All“ ist so knackig frostig, wie man es von IMMORTAL gewohnt ist. Bei den acht soliden Songs beschleicht mich ein wenig Nostalgie, da Demonaz  mit massiven Grooves und eiskalten Riffs die Elemente aufgreift, die mir an den frühen Alben gefallen. Unterstützt wurde er von Kevin Kvåle (Drums/ u.a. Gaahls WYRD und Arve Isdal (Bass/ ENSLAVED).

July – VREID

Endlich etwas Neues von VREID, die sich mit dem Song „Flammen“ zurückgemeldet haben. Mit VREID verbinde ich Schwermut und Energie sowie Intensität, Nachdenklichkeit und Experimente.

Das ist auch in „Flammen“ wieder zu hören. Mit hämmernden Riffs, düsterem Sound, tollen Leads und symphonischen Elementen ist „Flammen“ wie eine Essenz ihrer Musik der letzten Jahre.

Ihr letztes Album „Wild North West“ erschien 2021. Damit haben sie uns auf eine Reise an einen Ort tief in den Bergen mitgenommen. Dorthin, wo die Grenze zwischen Realität und Fantasie nicht mehr deutlich ist und der Tod nur einen Schritt hinter einem liegt.

Zusammen mit SÓLSTAFIR haben sie im gleichen Jahr ein ganz besonderes Konzert gestreamt. VREID haben auf dem Storehogen Berg in Sogndal gespielt und SÓLSTAFIR auf der Hochebene von Hellisheiði in ihrer Heimat Island.

Und jetzt heißt es: Warten auf das Album.

August – SKÁLMÖLD

Der Sommermonat brachte ein neues Album von SKÁLMÖLD. Mit “Ýdalir“ sind die Isländer ihrer Linie, Songs auf der Basis isländischer Sagen zu entwickeln, treugeblieben. Sie haben diese Grundidee weiterverfolgt, aber dabei neue Strukturen und Ideen entwickelt. Und für einige Überraschungen gesorgt.

Seit SKÁLMÖLD ihr fünftes Album „Sorgir“ veröffentlichten, sind fast fünf Jahre vergangen. Dies hat einmal damit zu tun, dass sie 2019 beschlossen, eine Pause zu machen, um nach den vielen Touren die Batterien aufzuladen und über neue Songs nachzudenken. Als sie wieder losstarten wollten, kam die Covid-Pandemie dazwischen.

In diesem Jahr konnten sie „Ýdalir“ veröffentlichen, eine tolle Geschichte erzählen und auf Tour gehen.

„Ýdalir“ ist musikalisch härter als die Vorgänger. Dadurch entwickeln die Melodien eine noch deutlichere Wirkung. Dass SKÁLMÖLD über mehrere gute Sänger verfügt, wissen wir bereits. Diesmal trägt auch Drummer Jón Geir Jóhansson einen engelsgleichen Gesang bei. Ansonsten gibt es Passagen zum Headbangen, andere zum Mitsingen. Und es sind wieder Geschichten zu Orten und Charakteren, die in der nordischen Mythologie eine Rolle spielen. Skálmöld übernehmen aber nicht einfach die Texte aus der Edda, sondern Snæbjörn Ragnarsson (Bass) erzählt neue Geschichten. Z.B. über Ullur, der zentralen Figur des Albums, bei dem Skálmöld wohl dachten, dass er es verdient hat, dass man mehr über ihn erzählt.

September – FIXATION

FIXATION ist eine noch relativ neue Hardrock-Band aus Norwegen, die 2020 mit der EP „Global Suicide“ ihr Debüt veröffentlicht hat. Jetzt legen sie mit „More Subtel Than Death“ ein Album nach. Mit schweren Riffs, massiven Synthesizer-Sound und eingängigen Melodien verbinden sie Rock mit Metalcore und würzen dies mit Sozialkritik. Die Texte handeln von Ungerechtigkeit, Egozentrismus, Klimakrise und der Missachtung der Menschenrechte. Die teilweise bombastische Musik bildet eine angemessene Kulisse für die oft emotionalen Ausbrüche

Das Mixing hat Jason Livermore (der u.a. mit RISE AGAINST gearbeitet hat) übernommen.

Oktober – FORTÍÐ

Der Oktober brachte uns „Narkissos“, das siebte Album von FORTÍÐ.

FORTÍÐ (isl. für Vorzeit und Vergangenheit) ist eine isländisch-norwegische Pagan-Metal-Band.

Und was haben die nun mit Narziss, einer Gestalt der griechischen Mythologie zu tun? Keine Sorge, FORTÍÐ bleiben sich treu und haben auf ihrem siebten Album den Archetypen des Selbstverliebten in einen nordischen Kontext gebracht. Auch musikalisch sind sie sich treu geblieben. Sie garnieren ihren Black Metal mit Thrash- und Folk-Elementen, schön konzipierten Gitarrenparts und wohldosierten Wechseln im Tempo. Es geht immer klar voran, ohne Verspieltheit aber doch mit Leichtigkeit.

November – BARDS OF SKAÐI

BARDS OF SKAÐI – das sind Göran Månsson (Blasinstrumente und Schlagzeug) und Thomas von Wachenfeldt (Keyboards, Saiteninstrumente).

Das Album „Glysisvallur: Musick from the frozen Atlantis“ ist Musik zum Träumen. Sie entwickeln Klanglandschaften, in die es sich einzutauchen lohnt. Zeitweise hat man das Gefühl zu schweben, so leicht tragen einen die Melodien. Es ist ‚November-Musik‘, der angemessene Hintergrund es sich gemütlich zu machen, während es draußen grau und unwirtlich wird.

Dezember – GÅTE

Nachdem GÅTE im Oktober „Vandrar“ veröffentlicht haben, erschien im Dezember bei Indie Recordings die Doppel-LP „Huldra“. Diese Vinyl ist eine Zusammenstellung der Songs, die sie bekannt gemacht haben. Mit „Ulveham“ und „Huldra“ sind zudem zwei Songs dabei, die bisher noch nicht physisch veröffentlicht wurden.

Wenn es um die Verbindung von Folk und Rockmusik geht, kommt man an GÅTE nicht vorbei. Bereits für ihr Debütalbum „Jygri“ gewann sie 2002 den Spellemannprisen, den wichtigsten norwegischen Musikpreis. 2021 hatten sie mit „Nord“ noch einmal ein rein akutsiches (Folk-) Album herausgebracht. Mit der EP „Vandrar“ sind sie zu ihren rockigen Anfängen zurückgekehrt und haben Folkmelodien, Drehleier und Maultrommel mit rockigen und metallischen Riffs verbunden. Da gibt es düstere und sphärische Momente aber auch fette Riffs.

Wer es eher rockig mag, dem wird „Vandrar“ gefallen. Wer hingegen feine Folksongs hören möchte, wird sie auf „Huldra“ finden.

Das war „meine“ Musik in 2023

So, das waren die Alben, die mir in diesem Jahr viel Spaß gemacht haben.

Es waren aber nicht nur Alben, die für eine gute Zeit gesorgt haben, sondern auch die Gespräche/Interviews, die viele meiner Fragen beantworteten, neue aufwarfen, auf verschiedenen Ebenen Impulse gegeben und somit Stillstand unmöglich gemacht haben.

Hört doch mal in die Alben rein (und/oder lest die Reviews und Interviews), kommt gut ins Neue Jahr, in dem ich euch hoffentlich auch wieder interessante und hörenswerte Alben vorstellen kann!

Music from the North – a look back at 2023

If I look at the number of releases in the Metal and Folk genres solely from the Scandinavian countries, it has been a very productive year in 2023. But not just in terms of quantity, but also in quality.

Selecting a few proved to be challenging. The chosen strategy: one album for each month. This made the selection somewhat easier. The chosen releases are the ones that still captivate me after frequent listening.

It wasn’t just the music that provided many good moments last year, but also the interviews I could conduct with musicians from various domains. Many thanks to Toumas Rounakari, Benny Braaten, Þráinn Baldvinsson and Jón Geir Jóhannsson from SKÁLMÖLD, Leo Wichmann (WORDS OF FAREWELL), and Stefan Matschke (AGENDA)!

Many thoughts and questions from our discussions will accompany and occupy me in the coming times. Listening to each other, talking, arguing, but always coming back together, tolerating different opinions and differences, seeing diversity as enrichment, and constantly reflecting on evaluations in any form – these are themes that came up in all interviews in one way or another. I will carry them – just like the music – into the next year.

And now, onto the music.

January – NEBALA

I have often written about NEBALA last year because, in my opinion, they achieved something remarkable. Starting with the album „Lustuz Laþu Wōþuz Alu“, where Jonas Lorentzen (ex-HEILUNG) collaborated not only with the musicians Sebastian Gainsborough (aka Vessel from the Manchester Collective) and Kjell Braaten (Wardruna, Origami Galaktika) but also with experts in Pre-Christian religion and philosophy. The texts from Nordic sagas, in combination with elements of Indian and European philosophy, form the basis for the consideration of sexuality from a spiritual and mythological perspective.

Traditional instruments like lyres, horns, tagelharpa, organistrum, Tibetan singing bowls, and various forms of throat singing shape NEBALA’s Indo-Nordic sound, making these songs special. They performed live for the first time at CASTLEFEST, offering the audience a truly magical experience. The concert at the MIDGARDSBLÓT Festival was recorded and is available as an album. In January 2023, NEBALA released the first video of the MIDGARDSBLÓT Festival show titled „Skiñañariaz“. The album and all videos were then released in May. Fieke van den Hurk did an excellent job with recording, and Kjell Braaten and Ivar Sandøy excelled in mixing and mastering, just like Sara Bøgh did in the artistic design of the video. Therefore, the videos are not just a documentation of the show but a medium that enhances the impact of the songs with fantastic visuals.

February – PIL & BUE

In February, PIL & BUE (Petter Carlsen and Gøran Johansen) released the album „Special Agents“. PIL & BUE (=Arrow and Bow) sound like a complete band even as a duo. They create powerful, dark, and sometimes humorous rock music. True to their band name, they hit the target with their brutal rhythms and penetrating melodies. Influences from Thrash Metal and Post-Rock provide diverse listening pleasures.

March – Kjell Braaten

Also, from Kjell Braaten, who released the EP „The Cabin“ this month, I have reported more frequently and introduced his albums „Ferd“, „Bronseplassen“ and „Blóta“.

I particularly like the composition of the pieces in „The Cabin“. The spectrum ranges from the intense lightness of improvisation on an instrument (Langspill) to orchestral sounds and the complex arranged variation of the song „Acoustic Oscillator“.

The song „The Cabin“ was a commissioned work and originally composed as a soundtrack for a dark animated film of the „Hansel and Gretel“ type. „Acoustic Oscillator“ is a remake of the song „Universal Oscillator“ by THE QUANTUM FIELD TRIP. In addition to his music, Kjell Braaten also composes for theatre and film (most recently for the series „Vikings Valhalla“). During the month, he released „Ragnarok“ and „Jotun“, two more songs he originally composed for film projects. I find it interesting to hear what has emerged besides his ‚own music‘. On the one hand, the music differs significantly from what he has released under his name in recent years. On the other hand, he once again uses instruments from around the world, which runs like a common thread through his musical work.

April – SEVEN IMPALE

Do you know the jazz-proggers SEVEN IMPALE? I was delighted when they finally released an album after seven (!) years. The long wait was due to all members being „busy with life“. Stian Økland, after completing his Bachelor’s in classical singing, was heard in opera productions in Europe and lately in Hong Kong. Håkon Vinje is busy with the keys at ENSLAVED. My anticipation turned into joy after the first listen to “Summit”, as the songs immediately take you into a heavy, metallic-laden Jazz’n Prog-Rock. With the pathos that Stian puts into his singing and Håkon’s free jazz escapades, it’s a heavy dish that they occasionally lighten up.

May – NEBALA (Live)

Here was the release of the aforementioned live album from NEBALA “Live at the Blót“.  More about it HERE.

June – IMMORTAL

In June it was said: „I am immortal“ or rather: „Ich bin IMMORTAL.“ After initial disagreements with Abbath (vocals) and later with Horgh (drums), Demonaz took over and essentially shaped the album alone. Did it work well? Yes, because „War Against All“ is as crisply frosty as you would expect from IMMORTAL. The eight solid songs evoke a bit of nostalgia in me, as Demonaz picks up on the elements I liked in the early albums with massive grooves and icy riffs. He was supported by Kevin Kvåle (drums/ among others Gaahls WYRD) and Arve Isdal (bass/ ENSLAVED).

July – VREID

Finally, something new from VREID, who returned with the song „Flammen“. I associate melancholy and energy, intensity, contemplation, and experiments with VREID.

This is also evident in „Flammen“. With pounding riffs, dark sound, great leads, and symphonic elements, „Flammen“ is like an essence of their music from recent years. Their last album, „Wild North West“, was released in 2021, taking us on a journey to a place deep in the mountains, where the boundary between reality and fantasy is no longer clear, and death is just a step behind.

Together with SÓLSTAFIR, they streamed an extraordinary concert in the same year. VREID played on the Storehogen Mountain in Sogndal, and SÓLSTAFIR played on the plateau of Hellisheiði in their home country, Iceland. And now it’s time to wait for the album.

August – SKÁLMÖLD

The summer month brought a new album from SKÁLMÖLD. With „Ýdalir“, the Icelanders stayed true to their line of developing songs based on Icelandic sagas. They continued this basic idea but developed new structures and ideas, providing some surprises.

Almost five years have passed since SKÁLMÖLD released their fifth album, „Sorgir“. This was partly due to their decision to take a break in 2019 to recharge their batteries after many tours and think about new songs. When they wanted to start again, the Covid pandemic came in between. This year, they were able to release „Ýdalir“, tell a great story, and go on tour.

„Ýdalir“ is musically harder than its predecessors. This makes the melodies have an even more distinct effect. We already know that SKÁLMÖLD has several good singers. This time, drummer Jón Geir Jóhannsson contributes an angelic singing. There are passages for headbanging and others for singing along. And, once again, there are stories about places and characters that play a role in Norse mythology. However, Skálmöld doesn’t just take the texts from the Edda; Snæbjörn Ragnarsson (bass) tells new stories, for example, about Ullur, the central figure of the album, where SKÁLMÖLD probably thought he deserved to have more said about him.

September – FIXATION

FIXATION is a relatively new hard rock band from Norway that debuted in 2020 with the EP „Global Suicide“. Now they follow up with an album titled „More Subtel Than Death“. Mixing heavy riffs, massive synthesizer sounds, and catchy melodies, they blend rock with metalcore, seasoning it with social criticism. The lyrics deal with injustice, egocentrism, the climate crisis, and the disregard for human rights. The sometimes bombastic music provides a fitting backdrop for the often emotional outbursts.

October – FORTÍÐ

October brought us „Narkissos“, the seventh album from FORTÍÐ.

FORTÍÐ (Icelandic for antiquity and past) is an Icelandic-Norwegian pagan metal band. And what do they have to do with Narcissus, a figure from Greek mythology? Don’t worry, FORTÍÐ stays true to themselves and has placed the archetype of the self-loving into a Nordic context on their seventh album. Musically, they also remain true to themselves, garnishing their black metal with thrash and folk elements, well-conceived guitar parts, and well-dosed changes in tempo. It always moves forward clearly, without playfulness but with ease.

November – BARDS OF SKAÐI

BARDS OF SKAÐI – that’s Göran Månsson (wind instruments and drums) and Thomas von Wachenfeldt (keyboards, string instruments). The album „Glysisvallur: Musick from the frozen Atlantis“ is music for dreaming. They create soundscapes worth immersing oneself in. At times, you feel like floating; the melodies carry you so lightly. It’s ‚November music,‘ the appropriate background to get comfortable while it gets grey and inhospitable outside.

December – GÅTE

After GÅTE released „Vandrar“ in October, the double LP „Huldra“ was released in December by Indie Recordings. This vinyl is a compilation of the songs that made them known. With „Ulveham“ and „Huldra“, two songs are included that have not been physically released before.

When it comes to the connection between folk and rock music, you cannot ignore GÅTE. They already won the Spellemannprisen, the most important Norwegian music award, for their debut album „Jygri“ in 2002. In 2021, they released a purely acoustic (folk) album, „Nord“. With the EP „Vandrar“, they returned to their rocky beginnings, combining folk melodies, hurdy-gurdy, and jaw harp with rocky and metallic riffs. There are dark and atmospheric moments, but also hefty riffs. If you prefer a more rocking sound, you will like „Vandrar“. If, on the other hand, you want to hear fine folk songs, you will find them on „Huldra“.

That was “my” music in 2023.

So, those were the albums that gave me a lot of pleasure this year. It wasn’t just albums that provided a good time but also the conversations/interviews that answered many of my questions, raised new ones, gave impulses on various levels, and thus made stagnation impossible.

SKÁLMÖLD spielen auf ihrer Headlinertour in Köln. Mit dabei: METSATÖLL und ATAVISTIA

Am Montag, den 16.Oktober 2023 war es endlich wieder soweit: SKÁLMÖLD live in Köln.

Auf ihrer „Ýdalir“-Tour spielten sie auch in Köln im Gebäude 9.  Mit dabei hatten sie nicht nur fünf Songs vom neuen Album, sondern auch fast 80 Minuten Zeit, um Songs von allen bisherigen fünf Alben zu spielen. Außerdem waren mit dabei: ATAVISTIA und METSATÖLL. Das war schon eine ungewöhnliche Kombination. Aber letztlich doch stimmig und abwechslungsreich zugleich.

SKÁLMÖLD haben gerade erst ihr sechstes Album „Ýdalir“ veröffentlicht (mehr dazu hier) und auch die kanadische Death Metal Band ATAVISTIA hat im April dieses Jahres ihr drittes Album „Cosmic Warfare“ herausgebracht.

ATAVISTIA

Beinah hätte ich den Beginn des Auftritts verpasst. Denn es war 20.00 Uhr als Beginn angegeben und ich unterhalte mich noch mit Mitgliedern des Skálmöld-Fanclubs, als ATAVISTIA bereits mit ihrer Show beginnen.

Ich hatte ATAVISTIA noch nicht live erlebt, war also entsprechend gespannt. Ihr Album „Cosmic Warefare“ hat mich neugierig gemacht. Die Bühne ist kaum beleuchtet, was aber zu der beeindruckenden Klanglandschaft passt, die die Vier aus Kanada direkt, massiv und dicht entwickeln.

Es ist melodischer symphonischer Death Metal, in den sie Prog und Power Metal, sowie Elemente, die auch in Filmmusiken passen, einweben. Immer dann, wenn man denkt, dass dem Hören eine Verschnaufpause gegönnt wird, hauen sie uns die Riffs und Blastbeats um die Ohren. Der Gesang von Mattias Sippola wird ab und zu von einer regelrechten Kakophonie an Klängen begleitet. Doch bevor das Chaos überwältigt, gibt es wieder eine feine Melodie.

„Divine Destruction“ hat mir besonders gut gefallen. Aus einem Donnergrollen heraus entwickelt Drummer Max Sepulveda auf den Toms beginnend großartige rhythmische Strukturen. Dann drehen ATAVISTIA noch einmal auf. Ein unglaublich intensiver spannungsreicher Song, der wie eine Zusammenfassung des bisher Gehörten ist: interessante Rhythmen, Melodieversprechungen, die zu Klangstürmen werden, druckvolle Passagen und schnelle Leads.  ATAVISTIA haben einen intensiven Eindruck hinterlassen.

METSATÖLL

METSATÖLL gehören für mich zum Urgestein einer gelungenen Verbindung aus Metal und Folklore. Eigentlich sind sie ja als Heavy-Metal-Band gestartet und haben 1999 ihr erstes Album herausgebracht. Dann kam Lauri Öunapuu mit Instrumenten wie Flöten, Kantele und Torupill (einer traditionellen estnischen Sackpfeife) dazu. Und so entstand die Verbindung aus Metal und Folklore, die den Klang und die Dynamik von METSATÖLL ausmacht.

METSATÖLL konnte man lange nicht auf Tour in unserer Gegend erleben. Umso mehr habe ich mich gefreut, als ich gesehen habe, dass sie auf der Tour von SKÁLMÖLD mit dabei sind.
Und mit dieser Vorfreude bin ich nicht allein. Im Publikum sind etliche Leute mit einem METSATÖLL-Shirt, die bereits beim Intro jubeln. METSATÖLL entfesseln ein Feuerwerk an metallisch-rockiger Struktur, in die sich die Folk-Strukturen wunderbar einbetten. Markus Teeäär ist sowohl für Gitarre, Gesang als auch für die launigen Ansagen zuständig, die er teilweise sogar auf Deutsch macht. Zu „Kivine Maa“ fordert er das Publikum auf: „You have to party and to dance“, was von diesem entsprechend umgesetzt wird.

Das ist auch etwas, das mir an METSATÖLL gefällt: die Melodien und Rhythmen haben diesen Aufforderungscharakter und viele Songs sind echte ‚Mitmach-Hits‘ geworden. Das hat man auch heute Abend wieder gemerkt: es wurde getanzt und mitgesungen (so gut es eben geht). Dabei sind die Texte durchaus ernst. Wenn dann die traditionellen Instrumente hinzukommen und Lauri mit seiner tiefen Stimme singt, berühren die Lieder etwas tief im Innern.  Ihr Set beenden sie mit „Metsaviha“, einem Lied, das uns in die Wälder zu den Wölfen und irgendwie in eine andere Dimension führt. Es war wunderbar, METSATÖLL mit all ihrer kraftvollen Musik wieder einmal live zu erleben!

SKÁLMÖLD

Noch bevor die sechs gutgelaunten Musiker von SKÁLMÖLD zum Intro „Ýr“ auf die Bühne kommen, bin sehr gespannt, welche Songs vom neuen Album sie spielen werden. Insgesamt werden es fünf Titel und mit dabei „Skuld“, einer meiner Lieblingssongs vom Album und neben „Ratatöskur“ und „Verðandi“ (die auch mit Video erschienen sind) noch „Veðurfölnir“ und „Ullur“. Darüber habe ich mich besonders gefreut. Doch dazu später mehr.

2019 hatten SKÁLMÖLD beschlossen, nach den vielen Tourneen eine Pause zu machen, um die Batterien wieder aufzuladen. Und das hat sichtbar gut funktioniert:

Björgvin Sigurðsson, einer der drei Gitarristen und Frontman der Band übernimmt auch die Ansagen, mit denen er energiegeladen das Publikum auf die Songs einstimmt. Baldur Ragnarsson schreit sich wie gewohnt die Seele aus dem Leib. Dabei hat er – wie auch sein Bruder Snæbjörn am Bass sowie Jón Geir Jóhansson an den Drums – immer wieder ein breites Lächeln im Gesicht. Þráinn Baldvinsson spielt mit ruhiger Präzision und Intensität nicht nur bei „Narfi“ und „Verðandi“ wunderschöne Soli heraus.

Die Vielfalt der Vocals, dieser Wechsel von Screams, gutturalem Gesang, dem schönen Klargesang von Keyborder Gunnar Ben und dem ‚Männerchor‘ ist eines der Merkmale von SKÁLMÖLD. Und dann kommt „Ullur“, der Song von dem ich gehofft hatte, dass sie ihn spielen werden. Hier singt Jón Geir mit wahrhaft lieblicher Stimme die Strophen, in denen die Schicksalsjungfrauen zum Tanz eigeladen werden. Was für ein Kontrast zu seinem energischen und akzentuierten Drumming.

Songs von allen Alben

In diesem Set spielen SKÁLMÖLD Songs von allen vorangegangenen Alben. Viele im Publikum singen textsicher mit. Und als Björgvin den letzten Song ankündigt, muss er „Kvaðning“ nicht einmal anstimmen. Das macht das Publikum ganz allein. Für diesen Song haben SKÁLMÖLD sich noch eine ‚Überraschung‘ einfallen lassen: Schaum, der sich fast wie Schnee anfühlt, wird über alle verteilt. Ein lustiger Abschluss für diesen großartigen Abend.

Der Abend

Drei interessante und unterschiedliche Bands haben diesen Abend gestaltet. ATAVISTIA erstmals live zu sehen, METSATÖLL nach so langer Zeit wieder zu hören und SKÁLMÖLD nach längerer Pause mit tollen neuen Songs und einer dichten Setlist erleben, war richtig gut. Live machen SKÁLMÖLD immer Spaß. Nicht nur, weil sie gut mit dem Publikum im Kontakt sind, sondern weil sie auch miteinander Späße machen. Und immer wieder gibt es so etwas Momente der Ruhe, in denen sie sich einen Platz (auch auf dieser kleinen Bühne) suchen, um sich zu sammeln.

Heute habe ich neue musikalische Räume entdeckt, in denen sich herausfordernde mit bekannten Elementen verbunden haben. Es war ein Abend mit gut komponierten Songs, die ernste Themen und spannende Geschichten mit abwechslungsreicher Musik vermittelt haben. Aber das Wichtigste ist: es hat einfach Spaß gemacht!

Es kommt immer wieder vor, dass die erste Band früher spielt, als angekündigt war. Das ist bedauerlich und ärgerlich. Weshalb kann nicht klar gesagt werden, wann die erste Band auf die Bühen geht? So nimmt man den Bands (neue) Zuhörer. Und dem Publikum die Möglichkeit, auch diese Bands in voller Länger zu hören.

Ich verstehe wirklich nicht, weshalb man so mit den Musikern und auch dem Publikum umgeht.

SKÁLMÖLD performed on their headlining tour in Cologne. Alongside them: METSATÖLL and ATAVISTIA.

On Monday, October 16, 2023, it was finally time once again: SKÁLMÖLD live in Cologne.

As part of their „Ýdalir“ tour, they also performed in Cologne at Gebäude 9. Not only did they bring five songs from their new album, but they also had nearly 80 minutes to play songs from all of their previous five albums. Furthermore, they were joined by ATAVISTIA and METSATÖLL. It was an unusual combination, but ultimately, it was cohesive and diverse at the same time.

SKÁLMÖLD had just released their sixth album, „Ýdalir“ (learn more here), and the Canadian death metal band ATAVISTIA had also released their third album, „Cosmic Warfare,“ earlier this year.

ATAVISTIA

I almost missed the beginning of the performance. The start time was indicated as 8:00 PM, and I was still chatting with members of the Skálmöld fan club when ATAVISTIA began their show.

I was quite curious because I hadn’t seen ATAVISTIA perform live before. Their album „Cosmic Warfare” piqued my interest. The stage was dimly lit, which suited the impressive sonic landscape that the four Canadians developed, massive and dense. It’s melodic symphonic death metal with elements of prog and power metal, interwoven with elements that could fit into film scores. Just when you think you might get a breather from the listening experience, they hit you with riffs and blast beats. Mattias Sippola’s vocals are occasionally accompanied by a cacophony of sounds. But before the chaos becomes overwhelming, a fine melody emerges.

„Divine Destruction“ particularly stood out for me. Emerging from a rumble of thunder, drummer Max Sepulveda creates fantastic rhythmic structures on the toms. Then ATAVISTIA amps it up one more time. An incredibly intense and suspenseful song that serves as a summary of what we’ve heard so far: intriguing rhythms, melodic promises turning into soundstorms, powerful passages, and swift leads. ATAVISTIA left a strong impression.

METSATÖLL

METSATÖLL, for me, are pioneers in the successful fusion of metal and folklore. They initially started as a heavy metal band and released their first album in 1999. Then Lauri Öunapuu joined with instruments like flutes, kantele, and torupill (a traditional Estonian bagpipe), and thus, the connection between metal and folklore, which defines the sound and dynamics of METSATÖLL, was born.

For a long time, METSATÖLL couldn’t be experienced on tour in our region. That’s why I was so excited to see them on the SKÁLMÖLD tour. And I wasn’t alone in my anticipation. Many people in the audience were wearing METSATÖLL shirts and cheering during the intro. METSATÖLL unleashed a fireworks display of metallic-rock structure, seamlessly integrating folk elements. Markus Teeäär is responsible for guitar, vocals, and witty announcements, some of which he even made in German. During „Kivine Maa“ he encouraged the audience to „party and dance,“ which they did accordingly.

This is one of the things I appreciate about METSATÖLL: their melodies and rhythms have an inviting quality, and many of their songs have become real „sing-along hits“. This was evident again tonight: there was dancing and singing (as best as one can). Despite the seriousness of their lyrics, when the traditional instruments come into play, and Lauri’s deep voice sings, the songs touch something deep within. They concluded their set with „Metsaviha“, a song that takes us into the woods with the wolves and somehow into another dimension. It was wonderful to experience METSATÖLL’s powerful music live once again.

SKÁLMÖLD

Even before the six cheerful musicians of SKÁLMÖLD took the stage with the intro „Ýr“, I was eager to know which songs from the new album they would perform. In total, they played five tracks, including „Skuld“, one of my favourite songs from the album, and also „Ratatöskur“ and „Verðandi“ (which also had videos released), along with „Veðurfölnir“ and „Ullur“. I was particularly delighted about this.

In 2019, SKÁLMÖLD decided to take a break after numerous tours to recharge their batteries. It clearly worked!

Björgvin Sigurðsson, one of the three guitarists and the band’s frontman, took the stage and energetically engaged the audience with announcements. Baldur Ragnarsson belted out his vocals in the customary fashion. He and his brother Snæbjörn on bass, as well as Jón Geir Jóhansson on drums, over and over had broad smiles on their faces. Þráinn Baldvinsson played beautiful solos with calm precision and intensity, not only on „Narfi“ and „Verðandi“. The variety of vocals, the switch between screams, guttural singing, the lovely clear singing by keyboardist Gunnar Ben, and the „men’s choir“ are some of SKÁLMÖLD’s distinguishing features. Then came „Ullur“, the song I had hoped they would play. Here, Jón Geir sings the verses with a lovely voice, inviting the fate maidens to dance. What a contrast to his energetic and accented drumming.

Songs form all their albums

In this set, SKÁLMÖLD play songs from all their previous albums. Many in the audience sing along confidently. When Björgvin announces the final song, he doesn’t even need to start „Kvaðning“ himself. The audience does it all on their own. SKÁLMÖLD has a little „surprise“ in store for this song: foam that feels almost like snow is sprayed all over the audience. A fun conclusion to this fantastic evening.

The Evening

Three interesting and diverse bands shaped this evening. Seeing ATAVISTIA live for the first time, hearing METSATÖLL again after a long time, and experiencing SKÁLMÖLD after their break with great new songs and a compact setlist was a lot of fun. Watching SKÁLMÖLD live is always enjoyable. Not only because they engage well with the audience but also because they share moments of humour among themselves. And there are always those moments of tranquillity when they find a spot (even on this small stage) to regroup. Tonight, I discovered new musical spaces where challenging elements were combined with the familiar. It was an evening filled with well-composed songs that conveyed serious themes and exciting stories through diverse music. But most importantly, it was just a lot of fun!

One last thing:

It often happens that the first band performs earlier than announced. This is regrettable and frustrating. Why can’t the schedule for the first band be communicated clearly? This leaves the bands with fewer (new) listeners and deprives the audience of the opportunity to hear these bands in their entirety. I genuinely don’t understand why musicians and the audience are treated this way.

Ab dem 13. Oktober 2023 sind SKÁLMÖLD unterwegs durch Europa, um ihr neues Album „Ýdalir“ zu präsentieren.

„Ýdalir“ hat mir gut gefallen. Und vielleicht haben die SKÁLMÖLD-Fans unter euch ja auch schon den einen oder anderen Song gehört oder sogar das gesamte Album.

SKÁLMÖLD sind ihrer Linie, Songs auf der Basis der isländischen Sagen zu entwickeln, treugeblieben. Sie haben diese Grundidee weiterverfolgt, aber dabei neue Strukturen und Ideen entwickelt. Und für einige Überraschungen gesorgt, die mir viel Spaß gemacht haben.

Musikalisch ist „Ýdalir“ härter als die Vorgänger. Aber dadurch wirken die Melodien noch mehr und transportieren neben der kraftvollen Energie eine verspielte Leichtigkeit, die ich an SKÁLMÖLD so mag. Es gibt Passagen zum Headbangen ebenso wie solche zum Mitsingen. Growls und Screaming wechselt mit klarem Gesang. Es gibt hymnische Teile, die organisch aus der Musik oder aus der erzählten Geschichte hervorgehen. (Review des Albums gibt es HIER)

Also alles, was eine Show abwechslungsreich macht und dazu beiträgt, dass man richtig mit einsteigen kann. Das konnte man bei den SKÁLMÖLD-Konzerten, die ich bisher miterlebt habe, immer!

SKÁLMÖLD, METSATÖLL und ATAVISTA

SKÁLMÖLD kommen aber nicht allein. Mit dabei sind METSATÖLL und ATAVISTIA.

Somit haben SKÁLMÖLD zwei Bands mitgebracht, die man hier bei uns nicht so oft auf der Bühne sieht.

METSATÖLL kommen aus Estland und waren lange nicht mehr auf Tour. Die Band wurde 1999 gegründet und hat seitdem acht Alben veröffentlicht. Sie verbinden Heavy Metal mit Elementen der estländischen Folklore. Dabei nutzen sie neben der estnischen Sprache teilweise auch traditionelle Instrumente.

ATAVISTA kommen aus Vancouver. Sie sind bei dieser Tour zum ersten Mal in Europa unterwegs. Im April dieses Jahres haben sie ihr Album „Cosmic Warfare“ veröffentlicht. Wer epische Klanglandschaften aus orchestral arrangiertem Black und Death Metal sowie skandinavischer Folklore mag, wird hier voll auf seine Kosten kommen.

Seit SKÁLMÖLD ihr fünftes Album „Sorgir“ veröffentlichten, sind fast fünf Jahre vergangen. Dies hat einmal damit zu tun, dass sie 2019 beschlossen, eine Pause zu machen, um nach den vielen Touren die Batterien aufzuladen und über neue Songs nachzudenken. Als sie wieder losstarten wollten, kam die Covid-Pandemie dazwischen.

Aber jetzt ist am 18. August 2023 endlich soweit: Album Nummer sechs erscheint. Es trägt den Titel „Ýdalir“. Ýdalir, die Eibentäler, in denen nach der nordischen Mythologie Ullur wohnt, dessen Geschichte das Album erzählt.

SKÁLMÖLD sind ihrer Linie, Songs auf der Basis der isländischen Sagen zu entwickeln, treugeblieben. Sie haben diese Grundidee weiterverfolgt, aber dabei neue Strukturen und Ideen entwickelt. Und für einige Überraschungen gesorgt.

Die Magie des Geschichtenerzählens

Es sind eben wieder Geschichten, die erzählt werden. Geschichten zu Orten und Charakteren, die in der nordischen Mythologie eine Rolle spielen. Dabei übernehmen SKÁLMÖLD nicht die Texte aus der Edda, sondern haben neue Geschichten dazu geschrieben. Über Ullur z.B., der zentralen Figur des Albums, erfahren wir in der Grímnismál nicht viel. Aber SKÁLMÖLD scheinen sich einig gewesen zu sein, dass er es verdient, mehr über ihn zu erzählen.

Ýr und Ýdalir – der Anfang der Geschichte

Das instrumentale Intro „Ýr“ stimmt uns mit Orgel und akustischen Gitarren auf ruhige Momente, aufs Hinhören und Zuhören ein.
Aber sobald „Ýdalir“ beginnt, ist es vorbei mit Ruhe und Bedächtigkeit. Drängende Rhythmen bilden die Basis für Growls und Screams.

Ullur und die Seinen leben in Ýdalir in Frieden, bis Niðhöggur ihn zerstört. Die Tempowechsel, energische Riffs und das Anspielen von Melodien übermitteln die Bedrohung, die Unruhe, die Flucht. Und währenddessen weben die Nornen die Schicksalsfäden.

Die Flucht

„Veðurfölnir“ ist druckvoll und temporeich angelegt. Er hätte angesichts des dramatischen Geschehens durchaus härter, weniger melodiös sein können.

Nach Rhythmuswechsel und rockiger Passage geht es um die Hoffnung, dass sie auf der Flucht nicht den Mut verlieren.  Hier passt der kraftvolle klare, harmonisch interessant gestaltete klare Gesang sehr gut. Der folgende gutturale Gesang spiegelt das Chaos der weiteren Flucht wider und erzählt von Veðurfölnir, dem Habicht und Yggrasils Adler.

Vergiss, bewahre und träume

In „Urður“, „Verðandi“ und „Skuld“ geht es um die Nornen, diese mythologischen Schwestern, die über das Schicksal der Menschen bestimmen.  Um die Macht der Vergangenheit, den Genuss in der Gegenwart und darum, die Vergangenheit hinter sich zu lassen, aber mitzunehmen, was hilfreich war.

Snæbjörn, Baldur und Gunnar geben jeweils einer Norne die Stimme. Alle drei Lieder erzeugen Spannung durch Kontraste. Sei es durch den Wechsel von gutturalem und klaren Gesang oder fließende Leitmotive, die durch rasante Gitarrenparts unterbrochen werden.

So ist „Urður“ geprägt von einem dynamischen Basslauf, während bei „Verðandi“ die Oboe für den roten Faden sorgt.  Bei „Skuld“ steht der dunkle, dramatische Bass im Gegensatz zum klaren Gesang.

Ich kann garnicht sagen, welcher der ‚Nornen-Songs‘ mir am besten gefällt. Aber „Verðandi“ wird sicherlich live ein toller Song, weil man wunderbar mitsingen kann.

Ratatoskur und Níðhöggur

„Ratatoskur“ ist das Eichhörnchen, das auf Yggrasil zwischen dem Adler und Níðhöggur, dem Drachen, der an einer der Wurzeln Yggdrasils lebt, hin und herläuft. Und so klingt der Song auch: mit einer eingängigen, flinken Melodie und doch schwer, wenn er von Ullurs Flucht erzählt.

„Níðhöggur“ erzählt über die Auseinandersetzung zwischen Ullur und dem Drachen. Hier gibt es durch den Chor, intensives Drumming, treibende Gitarrenparts und nicht zuletzt den Gesangspart von Þráinns Vater Baldvin Kristinn Baldvinsson epische Momente.

Ullur

Mit „Ullur“ nehmen Skálmöld sich 10 Minuten Zeit, um die Ereignisse zusammenzufassen. Die Lyrics in traditioneller Dichtform verfasst, untermalt durch Orgel- und Keyboard, mit wunderschönen Harmonien und tollen Riffs.

In der Mitte dann das Prasseln eines Feuers. Die Instrumentierung ist minimalistisch, so dass der wunderschöne und mitreißende Gesang – diesmal von Jón Geir, der dafür seinen Platz an den Drums verlassen hat – die Schicksalsjungfrauen beschwingt und ruhig zum Tanz einladen kann.

Fazit

„Ýdalir“ gefällt mir, weil das Prinzip, Geschichten zu erzählen, komplex und dennoch voller Leichtigkeit umgesetzt wird. Die Musik ist melodiös und dabei trotzdem hart und heavy ist. Und weil es voller Überraschungen steckt, was die stimmliche, harmonische aber auch rhythmische Gestaltung angeht. Wenn harte Growls und Screams sich mit hymnischen Chören und wieder schön von þráinn herausgespielten Gitarrensoli abwechseln, die gleichzeitig eingängig und komplex sind, entstehen tolle Momente.

An manchen Stellen hätte ich es mir rauer, schräger, vielleicht auch misstönender gewünscht, um die Dramatik der Geschichte, die sie erzählen, noch besser zu transportieren.

Über das Geschichtenerzählen hatte ich mich bereits mit Þráinn unterhalten.

Jede Geschichte ist ein Stück Magie. Wenn deine Großeltern dir eine Geschichte erzählen, egal ob wahr oder ein Mythos, verlierst du dich in der Erzählung. Warum fühlen sich die meisten Menschen entspannt, wenn sie an einem Lagerfeuer oder einer Feuerstelle sitzen? Weil es das ist, was die Menschheit am Leben erhalten hat, und wenn man am Feuer sitzt, singt man und erzählt Geschichten. Magie. Diese Atmosphäre ist immer noch da, und jeder kann sie genießen. Manchmal muss man einfach innehalten und im Moment bleiben. Genießen Sie die Stille … seien Sie einfach da.

Und diese Magie haben sie mit „Ýdalir“ übermittelt. Durch die verschiedenen stimmlichen Möglichketen von Snæbjörn, Baldur, Gunnar und zuletzt Jón Geir konnten sie die Geschichten stimmig und abwechslungsreich gestalten.

Die Songtitel geben Hinweise darauf, worum es geht. Und dann kann man auch ohne den Text zu verstehen, einfach auf die Musik und den Ausdruck hören und seiner eigenen Fantasie freien Lauf lassen.

Ullur, den ich bisher nur irgendwie mit Bogen und Skiern in Verbindung gebracht habe, hat nun ‚ein Gesicht‘ bekommen.

SKÁLMÖLD zeigen mit „Ýdalir“, dass sie auch nach der langen Pause komplexe Riffs, feine Melodien und hymnische Chöre zu abwechslungsreichen Songs verbinden können.

Durch die Erzählstruktur wirkt dieses Album ernster als die Vorgänger. Dennoch werden Songs wie „Verðandi“ oder „Veðurfölnir“ dafür sorgen, dass sich die Energie dieses Albums überträgt.

„Ýdalir“ – SKÁLMÖLD Returns with New Album After Five Years

Nearly five years have passed since SKÁLMÖLD released their fifth album „Sorgir“. This was partly due to their decision in 2019 to take a break after extensive touring, to recharge and contemplate new songs. When they were ready to start again, the Covid-19 pandemic intervened.

But now, on August 18, 2023, the time has finally come: their sixth album is being released. It’s titled „Ýdalir“. Ýdalir, the Yew-Dales, where according to Norse mythology, Ullur resides, and whose story the album tells.

SKÁLMÖLD has remained faithful to their approach of developing songs based on Icelandic sagas. They’ve continued with this foundational idea but have incorporated new structures and ideas, bringing some surprises along the way.

To put it plainly, the album has become truly legendary, in the true sense of the word. Musically, it’s heavier than its predecessors. Yet this intensifies the melodies, conveying not only powerful energy but also a playful lightness that I adore in SKÁLMÖLD.

There are sections for headbanging as well as moments for singing along. Growls and screaming alternate with clear vocals. There are hymnic parts that organically arise from the music or the narrated story.

The Magic of Storytelling

Once again, it’s stories that are being told. Stories about places and characters that play roles in Norse mythology. SKÁLMÖLD doesn’t directly adopt the texts from the Edda but has written new stories to accompany them. For instance, about Ullur, the central figure of the album, we don’t learn much from Grímnismál. However, SKÁLMÖLD seemed to agree that he deserved more storytelling.

Ýr and Ýdalir – The Beginning of the Story

The instrumental intro „Ýr“ sets the stage with organ and acoustic guitars for tranquil moments, urging us to listen carefully.
But once „Ýdalir“ starts, tranquility and contemplation are gone. Urgent rhythms form the basis for growls and screams.

Ullur and his followers live in Ýdalir in peace until Niðhöggur destroys it. The tempo changes, energetic riffs, and the interplay of melodies convey the threat, the unrest, and the escape. And amidst this, the Norns weave the threads of destiny.

The Escape

„Veðurfölnir“ is forcefully and briskly arranged. Given the dramatic events, it could have been harsher and less melodic. After the rhythm shifts and a rocky passage, it touches upon the hope that they won’t lose their courage during the escape. Here, the powerful, clear, harmonically intricate singing fits well. The subsequent guttural vocals reflect the chaos of the ongoing flight and tell of Veðurfölnir, the Hawk, and Yggdrasil’s Eagle.

Forget, Preserve, and Dream

In „Urður“, „Verðandi“, and „Skuld“ the focus is on the Norns, these mythological sisters who determine the fate of humans. About the power of the past, the enjoyment of the present, and leaving the past behind while taking what was helpful along.

Snæbjörn, Baldur, and Gunnar each give a voice to one of the Norns. All three songs create tension through contrasts, whether by shifting between guttural and clear vocals or through flowing motifs interrupted by rapid guitar parts.

„Urður“ is marked by a dynamic bassline, while in „Verðandi“ the oboe provides the guiding thread. In „Skuld“ the dark, dramatic bass contrasts with the clear vocals.

I can’t really say which of the ‚Norn songs‘ I like best. But „Verðandi“ will certainly be a great live song, as it’s wonderfully sing-alongable.

Ratatoskur and Níðhöggur

„Ratatoskur“ is the squirrel that runs back and forth on Yggdrasil between the eagle and Níðhöggur, the dragon living at one of Yggdrasil’s roots. And the song sounds like that too: with a catchy, nimble melody yet heavy when describing Ullur’s escape.

„Níðhöggur“ tells of the conflict between Ullur and the dragon. Here, the choir, intense drumming, driving guitar parts, and, not least, the vocal part by Þráinn’s father Baldvin Kristinn Baldvinsson create epic moments.

Ullur

With „Ullur“, Skálmöld takes 10 minutes to summarize the events. The lyrics, written in traditional poetic form, are accompanied by organ and keyboard, with beautiful harmonies and great riffs. In the middle, the crackling of a fire. The instrumentation is minimalistic, allowing the beautiful and captivating singing – this time by Jón Geir, who left his place at the drums for this – to cheerfully invite the fate maidens to dance.

Conclusion

I like „Ýdalir“ because the principle of storytelling is complex yet executed with ease. The music is melodious and yet still heavy and powerful. And because it’s full of surprises in terms of vocal, harmonic, and rhythmic composition. When harsh growls and screams alternate with hymnal choirs and guitar solos played skillfully by þráinn, which are both catchy and intricate, wonderful moments emerge. At some points, I might have wished for it to be rougher, more discordant, to better convey the drama of the story they’re telling.

I’ve already discussed storytelling with Þráinn.

Every story is a bit of magic. When your grandparents tell you a story, true or a myth, you get lost in the storytelling. Why do most people get a nice relaxing feeling sitting close to a campfire or a fireplace? Because that is what kept the human race alive and sitting next to the fire people sang and told stories. Magic. That atmosphere is still here for everyone to enjoy. Sometimes you just have to stop and stay in the moment. Enjoy the silence … just be.

And they’ve conveyed this magic with „Ýdalir“. Through the various vocal possibilities of Snæbjörn, Baldur, Gunnar, and finally Jón Geir, they’ve managed to craft the stories in a cohesive and diverse way.

The song titles give hints about the content. And then you can listen to the music and expression without even understanding the lyrics, letting your imagination run wild. Ullur, whom I’ve only associated with bows and skis, now has a ‚face.‘

SKÁLMÖLD show with „Ýdalir“ that even after the long hiatus, they can merge complex riffs, delicate melodies, and hymnal choirs into diverse songs. Due to the storytelling structure, this album seems more serious than its predecessors. Nevertheless, songs like „Verðandi“ or „Veðurfölnir“ will ensure that the energy of this album is transmitted.

Am 18. August 2023 veröffentlichen SKÁLMÖLD ihr sechstes Studioalbum „Ýdalir“.
Heute hatte ich das Vergnügen, mich mit Þráinn Árni Baldvinsson (Gitarre) über das kommende Album zu unterhalten. Dabei ist noch einmal deutlich geworden, wie eng die Lieder, die Lyrics, die Gedanken mit den isländischen Sagas und Geschichten verbunden sind. In Island erinnert vieles an die Charaktere und an die Orte, an denen die Geschichten spielen. So gibt es immer wieder einen Anlass, die Sagas weiterzuerzählen. Und das ist es auch, was SKÁLMÖLD mit ihren Alben machen: Die Geschichten weiterzugeben und sie gleichzeitig neu zu erzählen.
Es ging aber auch um nicht vorhandene Click Tracks, die Entstehung der Songs, Isländisch für die Lyrics und vieles mehr.

Ein Haufen Freunde und keine click tracks

Sæll Þráinn, vielen Dank, dass du dir während deines Urlaubs Zeit für das Interview nimmst. Ich würde gerne mit dir über das neue Album sprechen. Aber kannst du zuerst für diejenigen, die SKÁLMÖLD noch nicht kennen, kurz beschreiben, was für eine Art Band SKÁLMÖLD ist?
Ich denke, die beste Beschreibung ist: Es ist, als wenn man Zeit mit seinen Freunden verbringt. Denn wenn man Zeit mit seinen Freunden verbringt, passiert etwas Magisches. Wenn jemand die Band noch nicht kennt. soll er sich also eine Gruppe von Freunden vorstellen, die zusammen Musik machen. Und weil wir so gute Freunde sind, ist auch niemand in der Band mehr verantwortlich für das Schreiben der Songs als die anderen. Wir schreiben alle zusammen. Ich denke, das macht die Band so besonders.

Ja, wenn ihr auf der Bühne seid, sieht man, dass ihr viel Spaß dabei habt.
Ja, Spaß zu haben ist das eine. Aber was man auf der Bühne sieht, hat sicherlich auch damit zu tun, dass wir keine Click-Tracks verwenden.

Dann müsst ihr euch anders aufeinander einstellen, oder? Ist das nicht viel komplizierter?
Der Hauptgrund ist: Wenn man Click-Tracks hat, muss der Schlagzeuger genau im gleichen Takt bleiben. Und das hassen wir. Jón Geir, unser Schlagzeuger, macht uns mit seinem Drumming zu einer lebendigen Band. Denn manchmal, wenn er richtig gut drauf ist, spielt er einige Teile viel schneller, weil er das Gefühl hat, dass es so sein soll. Und an anderen Stellen spielt er langsamer. Das variiert von einer Show zur nächsten. Selbst wenn wir 39 Shows hintereinander spielen und die gleiche Setlist haben, spielen wir niemals jeden Song gleich.

Die Drummer – Gitarren-Solo – Challenge

Ich erinnere mich an eine Show, da hast du ich zu Jón Geir umgedreht und dann dein Solo verändert. Wahrscheinlich war das so ein Moment.
(lacht) Ja, vielleicht war es unser Lied „Loki“ vom Album „Börn Loka“. Denn das ist live eines meiner Lieblingslieder. Aber die Arpeggios sind kompliziert und daher ist es auch schwierig, das Solo perfekt zu spielen. Und Jón Geir hat manchmal versucht, mich zu ärgern. Wenn mein Solo begann, hat er schneller gespielt, damit es für mich noch schwieriger wurde. Aber ich liebe diese Herausforderung.  Denn wenn man jeden Abend im gleichen Tempo spielt, wird es langweilig.

So entsteht auch ein anderes Gefühl für die Musik. Und es kommt aus dem Moment heraus.
Genau. Die Zuhörer kennen das Lied und möchten die Melodie hören. Aber meine Soli spiele ich nur in ca. 75-80 % so, wie auf dem Album. Je nachdem, in welcher Stimmung ich bin, ändere ich die Soli. Ich möchte sie nicht Note für Note spielen, wie auf dem Album.
Es muss aus dem Moment heraus kommen, wie du gesagt hast.

Das verändert auch die Kommunikation mit dem Publikum.
Ja, genau. Ein wichtiger Teil der Show ist die Kommunikation mit den Leuten. Und das ist anders, wenn man sich nicht hauptsächlich darauf konzentrieren muss, das Lied genauso zu spielen, wie auf dem Album.

Was heißt SKÁLMÖLD?

Häufig kommt die Frage, was der Bandname bedeutet. Es gibt ja verschiedene Möglichkeiten, das Wort zu übersetzen.
Wörtlich übersetzt heißt der Name „das Zeitalter der Schwerter“ oder „hundert Jahre Krieg“. In den isländischen Sagas gab es einen fast hundert Jahre dauernden Krieg. Und das wird als „Skálm-öld“ bezeichnet.

Der Begriff wird aber auch heutzutage noch verwendet, oder?
Ja, man findet ihn z.B. in der Zeitung, wenn über Bandenkriege berichtet wird: „Es gibt eine ‚Skálmöld‘ in Mexiko“. Also ist es ein Wort, das Kriegszeiten beschreibt.

Wie seid ihr auf diesen Namen gekommen?
Es war ein Freund von jemandem in der Band, der sagte: „Hey, warum nennt ihr eure Band nicht Skálmöld?“ Und jeder fand es großartig.

Viele Leute nennen eure Musik „Viking Metal“. Bist du damit einverstanden?
Nein. Und wenn ich schlecht gelaunt wäre, würden mir dazu auch ein paar nicht so nette Formulierungen einfallen. Also mich stört die Kategorisierung von Musik.
Gleichzeitig verstehe ich, dass die Plattenfirmen die Musik kategorisieren müssen, damit sie sie verkaufen können. Aber ich hasse es ehrlich gesagt, wenn die Plattenfirmen entscheiden: das ist ‚Viking Metal‘. Aber einige Plattenlabels schnüren so ein Paket, werfen es auf den Markt und hoffen, dass es funktioniert.
Ich hasse Kategorisierungen. Denn auch wenn man nicht alle Arten z.B. von klassischer Musik oder Jazz mag, wird man immer etwas Großartiges in diesen Genres finden.

Die Pause, die länger wurde als geplant

Ihr habt 2019 beschlossen, eine Pause einzulegen. Um euch zu erholen, mehr Zeit mit euren Familien zu verbringen und über ein neues Album nachzudenken. Aber dann kam Covid und die Pause wurde viel länger als beabsichtigt. Was habt ihr in dieser Zeit getan?
Björgvin und ich haben uns an diesem Wochenende getroffen, weil wir ein Video für die nächste Single gedreht haben. Und wir haben tatsächlich über genau das gesprochen, wonach du fragst.
2019 haben wir beschlossen, eine Pause einzulegen, weil wir alle einfach nur noch müde waren. Nicht müde von dem, was wir tun, aber mental erschöpft. Wir hatten kaum eine Pause zwischen den Touren und Konzerten und merkten, dass wir eine Pause brauchten.
Der Plan war, uns im Januar 2021 zu treffen, Kaffee zu trinken und zu sagen, was wir jetzt tun wollen. Und als uns „das große C“ traf, war es unser Glück, dass wir gerade pausierten. Ein Freund von uns hatte bereits Kisten mit Merchandise in die USA verschickt, weil sie dort auf Tour gehen wollten. Und dann wurde alles abgesagt. So kam es, dass es dann zweieinhalb Jahre lang nichts von SKÁLMÖLD gab.

Die Covid – Jahre

Und wie ist es der Band in dieser Zeit ergangen?
Zunächst waren es drei Wochen völliger Panik, weil niemand wusste, was passieren wird. Für mich war es mental schwierig, weil ich mir Sorgen um meinen siebzigjährigen Vater machte.Aber iIch hatte insofern Glück, als ich meine eigene Musikschule habe und die meisten meiner Schüler bereit waren, Online-Unterricht zu machen.
Die anderen Jungs hatten nicht so viel Glück, weil sie in Geschäften gearbeitet haben. Jón Geir arbeitet z.B. in einem meiner Lieblingsläden, einem Comicbuchladen. Aber ich wusste, dass die Band so bald wie möglich wieder loslegen würde. Und alle waren total begeistert, als wir im July endlich wieder spielen konnten. In Akureyri auf einem Festival und live im Fernsehen. Und dann folgte die Tour mit FINNTROLL und weitere Shows.

Das neue Album entsteht

Und wann habt ihr angefangen, das neue Album zu schreiben?
Im November hatten wir vier Tage und im Januar fünf Tage dafür. Wir waren wirklich sehr fokussiert. Wir haben uns ein Haus im nördlichen Teil von Island gemietet, wo wir fast eine Woche lang gespielt und geschrieben haben. Dann hatten wir 11 Tage in einem der besten Studios, in dem wir jemals waren. Da haben wir  uns ‚eingesperrt‘ und mit niemandem außerhalb des Studios gesprochen. Wir waren 18 bis 20 Stunden am Tag dort. Wir waren alle sehr konzentriert – und glücklich. Es war fantastisch.

Ihr habt fünf Alben veröffentlicht, die in unterschiedlicher Wiese einem Konzept folgen. Auf dem neuen Album gibt es Lieder über Ratatoskur, Yggdrasil, Níðhöggur, Ullur und die drei Nornen. Wie seid ihr gerade auf diese „Charaktere“ gekommen?
Also eigentlich sagen wir immer, dass wir kein Konzept haben (lacht).
Als wir über das Thema des Albums gesprochen haben, hatten wir bereits einige Lieder. Musikalisch wussten wir, wohin wir wollten. Normalerweise sind wir uns zunächst unsicher, wohin das Album gehen wird.  Wir fangen einfach an zu schreiben und lassen uns treiben. Die Ideen kommen von Snæbjörn. Denn er schreibt die Texte. Aber er erlaubt uns schon noch, dabei mitzureden, wie die Geschichte verlaufen soll. Als er uns von der Idee für das neue Album erzählte, waren wir mitten im Songwriting. Wir haben jedes Lied mehrmals aufgenommen und dann erst das endgültige Produkt im Studio aufgenommen. Dann kam Snæbjörn und sagte: Das könnte ein Lied über Verðandi sein. Das Lied passt richtig gut gerade zu dieser Norne.

Drei Geschichtenerzähler und ein Gastsänger

Habt ihr mit dem Album etwas anders gemacht als sonst?
Ja, es gibt etwas, das anders ist: Wir haben jetzt drei Geschichtenerzähler. Wir haben entschieden, dass Gunnar, Baldur und Björkvin die drei Nornen singen und größere Gesangsanteile in mehr Liedern haben. Ich denke, das gibt dem Album eine coole Klangfarbe. Und mein Vater hat einen Part in „Níðhöggur“.

Er hat eine erstaunliche Stimme. Ich habe mir einige Lieder angehört, die er gesungen hat, als er jünger war, und einige seiner späteren Lieder. Es ist großartig, wie stark seine Stimme noch ist.

Snæbjörn steckt viel Mühe in die Texte. Er verwendet oft alte nordische poetische Formen, erzählt die Geschichten aber auf moderne Weise. Warum diese Vorgehensweise bei den Texten?
Einige isländische Literaturwissenschaftler teilen die Idee, die Snæbjörn verfolgt. Alle Geschichten über Mythologie und Volkssagen, die wir auf den Alben verwenden, sind Geschichten, die die Menschen immer wieder erzählt und im Laufe der Zeit verändert haben.

Und Snæbjörn greift diese Form des Erzählens auf und führt sie fort.
Ja. Wir haben all diese großartigen Geschichten. Und er verwendet die Ideen, die Charaktere und schreibt weitere Geschichten über diese Menschen, Nornen und Götter. Jüngere Leute werden hoffentlich Interesse daran gewinnen und die Geschichten dann auch weitererzählen. Wir haben alte Bücher in Bibliotheken oder hier bei mir zu Hause. Die Geschichten sollten nicht nur vorhanden sein, sondern sollten auch weitererzählt werden.
Wenn ich meinen Töchtern von Freya und Thor erzähle, ist es meine Aufgabe, es spannend und zu etwas Besonderem zu machen.

Über das Geschichtenerzählen

Ja, Geschichten erzählt zu bekommen, ist anders als sie zu lesen. Und SKÁLMÖLD erzählen die Geschichten auf eine Weise, die Interesse wecken kann. Ich denke, diese Geschichten sind in Island immer noch sehr präsent.
Eine der Hauptfiguren auf diesem Album ist Ullur. Er lebte in Ýdalir. Deshalb heißt das Album „Ýdalir“. Lustigerweise schaue ich gerade über den Fluss hier. Und auf der anderen Seite gibt es einen Wasserfall, der „Ullur“ genannt wird.

Als die Siedler vor Tausenden von Jahren hierherkamen, nannten sie den Wasserfall „Ullur“ nach der Figur in der „Grimnismál“, einer Geschichte in den alten Sagas. Über Ullur steht nicht so viel in den Sagas. Also denke ich, es ist fantastisch, dass Menschen anfangen, mehr Geschichten über ihn zu schreiben.

Ja, da stimme ich dir zu. Denn ich mag diese Geschichten. Für mich ist es auch interessant, den Originaltext mit den verschiedenen Übersetzungen zu vergleichen, die im Laufe der Zeit entstanden sind, um zu sehen, wie verschiedene Autoren sie verstanden und interpretiert haben.
Genau. Wir haben z.B. eine Geschichte, die „Sternen-Oddi’s Träume“  [Stjörnu-Odda draumur] heißt. Er hat hier in der Gegend gelebt und hat sich für die Sterne interessiert. Und die Person, die über ihn schrieb, beschrieb das Ganze so, wie es in der Geschichte „Tausendundeine Nacht“ beschrieben wird. Er schläft ein und dann beginnen die Geschichten.

Lieder und Geschichten reisen um die Welt

In solchen Geschichten, die es überall auf der Welt gibt, hat man dasselbe grundlegende Muster, das dann vom Erzähler verziert und angepasst wurde. Man findet dieselben Muster, Ideen und Themen in den mythologischen Geschichten auf der ganzen Welt: in den indischen Rigveda, der nordischen Edda und das finnische Kalevala.
Ja, so ist es. Und ich denke, es ist dasselbe bei Volksliedern. Lieder reisen. Ab dem 15. Jahrhundert kamen z.B. immer mehr Schiffe zum Fischen und Handeln nach Island. Und die Menschen brachten ihre Lieder mit und nahmen Lieder von Island mit in ihre Heimat zurück. Ich mache so eine Gitarren-Nerd-Radioshow. Dafür habe ich die Geschichte des Songs, „House of the Rising Sun“ nachverfolgt, das THE ANIMALS gemacht haben. Es gibt auch eine großartige Version von Bob Dylan. Die älteste aufgenommene Version stammt von 1923. Aber wenn man zurückreist, kann man eine Version von 1720 in den Niederlanden finden. Die ist fast dasselbe Lied. Also kann man nicht sagen: Es ist ein amerikanisches Volkslied – es ist nur ein Weltvolkslied. Das ist doch erstaunlich, nicht wahr!

Natürlich nehmen Menschen ihre Lieder mit, wenn sie ihre Heimat verlassen. Und jemand anderes wird es aufgreifen und dann wird vielleicht ein Volkslied in einem anderen Land.

Das geht nur auf Isländisch

Bei SKÁLMÖLD verwendet ihr Isländisch als Sprache. Es gibt nicht so viele Menschen, die es verstehen (Þráinn lacht). Ist es notwendig, die Texte zu verstehen?
Jedes Mal, wenn wir außerhalb von Island spielen, singen viele Leute im Publikum mit. Sie folgen dem Rhythmus und den Melodien. Es ist nicht notwendig, die Texte zu verstehen, um Spaß zu haben.

Und SKÁLMÖLD mit englischen Texten wären dann nicht mehr SKÁLMÖLD, oder?
Ich denke, die Möglichkeit, in Island und außerhalb von Island zu spielen und unsere Musik in unserer Sprache zu spielen, ist großartig. Für uns ist es wichtig, unserer Herkunft treu zu bleiben und dem, wie wir aufgewachsen sind. Und die Volkssagen und Geschichten über die Mythen könnten wir in einer anderen Sprache nicht so gut erzählen.
Snæbjörn verwendet traditionelle Formen des Geschichtenschreibens. Für mich macht das ist einen Teil der Magie aus, über die wir am Anfang des Interviews gesprochen haben.

Hat jeder in SKÁLMÖLD Interesse an den alten Geschichten? Wir kennen die meisten Charaktere und Geschichten, weil wir in der Schule etwas darüber erfahren. Und es gibt viele Häuser, Täler und Berge, die die Namen tragen und die Geschichten in Erinnerung rufen. Aber Snæbjörn weiß einfach mehr darüber, weil ihm sein Vater die Geschichten vorgelesen hat, als er ein Kind war.

Ich denke, wir brauchen mehr Menschen, die die Geschichten so erzählen, dass das Interesse geweckt wird.
Genau. Vielleicht müssen wir zu der ursprünglichen Art des Geschichtenerzählens zurückkehren. Wenn einem Geschichten erzählt werden, fesselt es einen anders, als wenn man allein in seinem Zimmer liest. Es macht mehr Spaß, jemandem beim Erzählen oder Singen zuzuhören.

Über Lieblingslieder

Hast du ein Lieblingslied auf dem neuen Album?  
Jedes Lied hat seine besondere Momente, also kann ich nicht sagen, welches mein spezieller Favorit ist.

„Verðandi“ ist ein Lied, für das ich die meisten Riffs geschrieben habe. Und wenn ich das Lied höre, fühle ich mich an den Ort zurückversetzt, an dem wir das Lied geschrieben haben. Und das erste Lied, das ein Intro ist, gefällt mir wegen der Verwendung von Akustikgitarren. Eine von 1920 und eine von 1930. Fantastische alte Instrumente. Baldur und ich spielen, und man hört, dass wir die Noten nicht genau zur gleichen Zeit spielen. Aber trotzdem spielen wir zusammen, ganz fließend. Es ist wie beim Geschichtenerzählen. Es gefällt mir wirklich sehr, wie das Intro funktioniert. Das Gleiche gilt für den Titelsong. Und das letzte Lied ist der emotionale Höhepunkt des Albums. Der Geschichtenerzähler beendet die Geschichte. Dann klingt es aus, nur noch eine Gitarre und die letzten Worte des Albums.
Daher sind das erste und zweite Lied des Albums und das letzte Lied meine Favoriten, weil sie meiner Meinung nach das Album auf coole Weise beginnen und beenden.

Þráinn Árni Baldvinsson in an interview about the new album by SKÁLMÖLD

On 18 August 2023, SKÁLMÖLD will release their sixth studio album „Ýdalir“.

Today I had the pleasure to talk to Þráinn Árni Baldvinsson (guitar) about the upcoming album.

It became clear how closely the songs, the lyrics, and the thoughts are connected with the Icelandic sagas and stories. In Iceland, many things are reminiscent of the characters and places where the stories are set. So there is always a reason to continue telling the sagas. And that is what SKÁLMÖLD do with their albums: To pass on the stories and tell them anew at the same time.
But it was also about non-existent click tracks, the creation of the songs, Icelandic for the lyrics and much more.

A bunch of friends

Sæll Þráinn, thank you for taking time off your holiday for the interview. I would like to talk to you about the new album. But first, for the people who don’t know SKÁLMÖLD yet, can you briefly describe what kind of band SKÁLMÖLD is?
First of all, I think the best to describe is: that it is like, how you spend time with your friends. When you are spending time with your friends something magical happens. If somebody has no idea of this band, you have to look at it like a bunch of friends. And because we are such good friends, no one in the band is more responsible for writing than the other. We are all writing together. I think that makes the band special.

When you are on stage, it is like a crowd of people making music and having fun.
Yes, having fun is the one thing. But what you see on stage has certainly also to do with the fact that we don’t use click tracks.

Then you have to adjust to each other differently, don’t you?  Isn’t that much more complicated?
The main reason is: when you have click tracks the drummer has to stay exactly on the same beat. And we hate that. Jón Geir, our drummer, makes us a band that is alive. Sometimes when he is in a really good mood, he just plays some parts way faster because he just feels like that is how it is supposed to be. And on other parts, he brings everything to a slower beat. And that varies from one show to the next show. Even if you play 39 shows in a row and you always have the same setlist we never play every song the same.

The drummer – guitar-solo – challenge

I remember one show you played. You moved around and looked at Jón Geir. And you changed something in your solo. Probably that was such a moment.
(laughs) Yes, maybe it was our song “Loki” from the “Börn Loka” album. That is one of my favourite songs to play live. But the arpeggios are really difficult to play the solo perfectly. And Jón Geir used to tease me a lot. So, when the solo part started, he tried to play faster and faster, so it was more difficult for me to play this solo. And that is the challenge that I love. Because when you are playing at the same tempo every night it is boring.

That’s great for having another feeling for the music. And it comes out of the moment.
Exactly. Everybody who is at the show knows the song and wants to hear the same kind of melody. But in my solos, I have 75 – 80 % as it is on the album. But if I am in the mood, I change the solos. I don’t want to play note for note like it is on the album.
It has to be in the moment like you said.

This also changes the communication with the audience.
Yes, exactly. An important part of the show is the communication with the people. And that goes differently when you don’t mainly focus on playing the song exactly as it is on the album.

The meaning of Skálmöld

The question often comes up about what the band name means. There are different ways to translate the word.
The name is literally translated as “the age of swords” or “hundred years of war”. In the Icelandic sagas were almost a hundred years of war. And that is said to be a ‘time of skálmöld’.

It is also a term used nowadays, isn’t it?
Yes, you can find it in newspapers: “There is a skálmöld in Mexico” because there is a war of gangs in Mexico. So it is a word that describes wartime.

How did you come up with that name?
It was a friend of somebody in the band who said: “Hey why don’t you call your band Skálmöld?” Everybody thought it was great.

A lot of people call your music “Viking Metal”. Do you like that?
No. And if I were in a bad mood I would through out some bad words. It is the categorizing of music that bothers me. At the same time, I understand that it is the record companies that have to categorize music so they can sell it. But I honestly hate it because record companies decide: this is ‘Viking Metal’. But some record labels just take a package, throw it out there and hope that something floats. I just honestly hate categorisations. Because even if you don’t like all kinds of classical music or jazz, you will always find something great in these genres.

The break that became longer than planned

In 2019 you decided to make a break. For rest, for having more time with your families, to think about a new album. An than came Covid and the break became much longer than intended. What have you done during that time?
Björgvin and I were spending time at my house in Reykjavik this weekend because we were shooting a video for the next single. So, we were actually talking about the exact thing you are asking about. In 2019 we decided to take a break because all of us were really, really tired. Not tired of what we do. But there was no break between tours and concerts. It was basically just mentally that we needed a break. The plan was to meet in January 2021, drink coffee and say what we want to do now.

And when “the big C” hit us, we were very lucky. A friend of ours had boxes of merchandise already shipped to the States going to tour the US. And then everything was shut down. So they lost a lot of money. And we were really lucky that we had just stopped. And then it was two and a half years with nothing of SKÁLMÖLD.

The Covid – time

And what about the band?
It was three weeks of complete panic because nobody knows what will happen with the lockdown. Everybody was panicking. For me, it was mostly difficult just mentally always worrying about my father who is in his 70^th. I was also very lucky because I have my own music school and probably 80 % of my students were willing to try online lessons. The rest of the boys were not so lucky because they were working at stores. Jón Geir is working at one of my favourite stores, which is a comic bookstore.
But I knew the band would start again as soon as possible. So, everybody was really into it last year in July when we played in Akureyri, at a festival and live on television. And then the tour with FINNTROLL and some shows followed.

The new album is formed

And when did you start to write the new album?
In November we took four days and five days in January. We were really focused on it. We rented a house in the northern part of Iceland where we were almost for a week just playing and writing. And then we had 11 days in one of the best studios we ever entered. And we locked ourselves into that and didn’t talk to anybody except in the studio. We were there for 18 to 20 hours a day. We were all so focused and happy. That was fantastic.

You have released five albums and they look like they all follow a concept. On the new album are songs about Ratatoskur, Yggdrasil, Níðhöggur, Ullur, and the Nornes. How did you just come up with these ‘characters’?
We always talking about not having a concept. (laughs)
When we started talking about the theme of the album, we had a lot of songs. Musically we knew where we wanted to go to. Usually, we are very unsure about how things will end. We just start writing and flying. Snæbjörn sells us the ideas. Because he writes the lyrics. But he allows us to influence how the story goes. When he told us about the idea for the new album, we were in the process of writing. We recorded every song several times and only then went to the studio to record the final product. Then Snæbjörn came and said: that could be a song about Verðandi. That song just fits this particular Norne.  With „Ratatoskur“ it was like the character jumped on the song.

Three storytellers and a guest singer

Is there anything new in the new album?
What changed in the new album: we have now three storytellers. We decided that Gunnar, Baldur and Björkvin are singing the three Nornes and have bigger singing parts in more songs. I think that gives the album kind of cool sound. And my father is a special guest in „Níðhöggur“.

He has an amazing voice. I listened to some songs he sang when he was younger and some of his later songs. It is great how strong his voice is by now.
Thank you. It was fun to have him with us.

Snæbjörn puts a lot of afford into the lyrics. He often uses old Norse poetic forms. But tells the stories in a modern way. Why this approach to the lyrics?
There are scholars of Icelandic literature who share these ideas. All the stories about mythology and folk tales we use on the albums are stories that people always have retold and changed in the process.

And Snæbjörn takes up and continues this form of storytelling.
Yes. We have all those great stories. And he uses the ideas, the characters, and the main theme and writes more stories about these people, Nornes, and Gods. Younger people will gain interest and continue telling the stories. We have old books in libraries or here at my house. The stories should not only be there but should be retold.
If I tell my daughters about Freya and Thor it is my job to make it exciting and try to build something extra.

About storytelling

Yes, being told stories is different from reading them. And SKÁLMÖLD tell the stories in a way that can arouse interest. I think these stories are still very present in Iceland.
One of the main characters on this album now is Ullur. He lived at Ýdalir. That’s because the album is called “Ýdalir”. Funny enough I am at this moment looking over the river here. And there is a waterfall there which is called “Ullur”.
And when the settlers came here 1000s of years ago, they named the waterfall “Ullur” because of the character in “Grimnismál” in the old sagas. We do have not that much information about Ullur in the sagas. So I think it is fantastic, people start writing more stories about him.

Yes, I agree with that. Because I like these stories so much. It is interesting to compare the original text with the different translations that have emerged over time. to see how different authors have understood and interpreted them.
Exactly. We have a story called “Star-Oddi’s Dreams” [“Stjörnu-Odda draumur”]. He was a local here. He was always trying to learn about the stars. And the person, who wrote about him, described it in the same way as in the story “1000 and One Nights”. He fell asleep and then the stories start.

Songs and stories travel around the world

In such kinds of stories which exist all over the world, you have the same basic pattern, which has then been embellished and adapted by the narrator. You can find the same patterns, ideas and themes in the mythological stories all around the world: in the Indian Rigveda, the Nordic Edda and the Finnish Kalevala.
Yes, that’s it. And I think it is the same with folk songs. Songs would travel. From the 15^th century, more and more ships came to Iceland for fishing and trading. And these people brought their songs with them and took songs from Iceland back to their homes. I do some guitar nerdy radio shows. For that I decided to track “House of the rising sun” that THE ANIMALS did, Bob Dylan did a great version. And the oldest recorded version is from 1923. But when you travel back you can find a version from 1720 in the Netherlands. Which is almost the same song. So you can’t say: it is an American folk song – it is just a world folk song. Think about how amazing that is!

Of cause people will travel with their songs. Someone will take it and it will become a folk song in another country

That works only in Icelandic

With SKÁLMÖLD you use Icelandic as a language. There are not so many people who understand it  (Þráinn laughs)
Is it necessary to understand the lyrics?
Every time we play outside of Iceland there are a lot of people in the audience singing along. Following the rhythm patterns and the melodies. It is not necessary to understand to have fun.

And Skálmöld with English lyrics would not be SKÁLMÖLD anymore, would they?
I think being able to play in and outside of Iceland, playing our music in our language is great. For us, it is important to stay true to our heritage and how we were brought up. And telling the folk tales and stories about the myths, we couldn’t do it well enough in another language.Snæbjörn very strictly uses the old forms of how to write lyrics. And that is a part of the magic we have been talking about at the beginning of the interview.

Does everybody in SKÁLMÖLD have an interest in the old stories?
We all kind of know about most of the characters because we learn about them in school. And there are a lot of houses and valleys and mountains that have the names. But Snæbjörns father used to read the stories to him when he was a kid. So he knows it more than us.

I think we need people who can tell the stories in a way that keeps the interest.
Exactly. maybe we have to go back to the original way of storytelling. When you are told stories it captivates you differently as if you are alone in your room reading. It is more fun to hear someone telling or singing.

About favourite songs

Do you have a favourite song on the new album?
Every song has a kind of special moments so I can’t say which is particularly a favourite.
“Verðandi“ is a song I wrote most of the riffs. And when I listen to the song I go back to that nice place where we were putting the song together. But the first song which is an intro I like because of the use of acoustic guitars. One from 1920 and one from 1930. Fantastic old instruments. Baldur and I are playing, and you can hear, that we are not playing the notes exactly at the same time. But we are playing together. It is so much like floating around. It is like sitting down for storytelling. I really really like how the intro works.
The same for the title song of the album. And the last song is like the highlight of the album in a sense of emotions and the storyteller is closing the story. Then it fades out to just one guitar and the mean singing of the final lyrics of the album. So strangely the first and second song of the album and the last song is a favourite because they start and finish the album in a cool way in my opinion.

Vor ein paar Tagen habe ich euch das neue Album von SKÁLMÖLD angekündigt. Und schrieben, dass es ein Interview mit SKÁLMÖLDs Drummer Jón Geir Jóhannsson geben wird. In diesem Interview stand nicht das kommende Album „Ýdalir“ im Vordergrund, sondern Jón Geir als Drummer.
Es ging sowohl darum, wie er das Drumming entdeckte, welchen Weg er genommen hat, wie er zu SKÁLMÖLD gekommen ist, wie er sein Drumset zusammenstellt – und welche Rolle „Das Tier“ aus der Muppet-Show spielt.

Am Anfang war: ruinierte Stuhlpolsterung

Du hast dein erstes Schlagzeug mit 13 bekommen. Angeblich, weil deine Eltern irgendwann genug davon hatten, wie du mit verschiedenen Utensilien als Schlagstöcke auf den Möbeln herumgetrommelt hast. Was war am Anfang wichtiger: die verschiedenen Klänge auszudrücken oder der (innere) Rhythmus?
Es ist wahr – ich hatte die Polsterung einiger Küchenstühle ruiniert, bis ich mein erstes Schlagzeug bekam. Ich glaube, es ging vor allem um den Rhythmus und den Ausdruck, denn die Stühle klangen größtenteils gleich, aber in meinem Kopf wusste ich, welchen Klang jedes Teil repräsentieren sollte.

Hattest du dann Unterricht oder warst du mehr ein „Autodidakt“? Was hast du von anderen Schlagzeugern gelernt?
Ich bin in einer kleinen Stadt in den Westfjorden namens Ísafjörður geboren und aufgewachsen, und obwohl es dort eine sehr gute Musikschule und eine aktive Kulturszene gab, war sie sehr klassisch geprägt, es gab also kein Schlagzeug. Ich habe bis zu meinem 15. Lebensjahr Horn gespielt, aber dann gab es nur noch Drumms. Von Anfang an habe ich gelernt, indem ich zu Platten spielte und meine Lieblingsalben nachspielte.

Das stelle ich mir schwierig vor!
Ich hatte das Glück, dass wir einen Plattenspieler mit vier Geschwindigkeiten hatten, so dass ich Alben mit 16 Umdrehungen pro Minute abspielen und Rhythmen sehr langsam analysieren konnte, um herauszufinden, was jeder Arm und jedes Bein machte. Später habe ich versucht, alle möglichen Lehrbücher und Videos zu bestellen. Es gab nicht viele Schlagzeuger in meiner Umgebung, von denen ich lernen konnte, aber durch diesen Mangel bekam ich die Gelegenheit, mit Musikern aller Art zu spielen, von denen die meisten älter waren als ich, in allen möglichen Projekten, Jazz, Blasorchester, Tanzband usw., und diese Vielfalt hat mich viel gelehrt.

Zunehmende Faszination und „Das Tier“

Hat sich im Laufe der Jahre deine Begeisterung für das Instrument verändert?
Ich bin immer noch genauso begeistert wie am Anfang, und ich lerne immer noch. Aber natürlich ändert sich der Fokus. Als ich anfing, ging es nur ums Spielen – Geschwindigkeit, Technik, cool aussehen. Aber als ich als Schlagzeuger wuchs, wurde ich immer mehr vom Instrument selbst fasziniert. Ich begann, meine eigenen Drums zu bauen und mehr über die Funktionsweise des Instruments und was es tut, zu lernen usw.

Hattest du Vorbilder, als du mit dem Schlagzeugspielen begonnen hast? (War es mehr die Musik von Bands und speziell die Schlagzeuger, die dich interessierten?) Was hat dich an den Schlagzeugern interessiert oder beeindruckt? Gab es damals Songs, die du spielen wolltest und die eine Art Motivation waren, deine Technik auszuprobieren und zu verbessern/unterschiedlicher zu gestalten?
Mein Idol seit meiner Kindheit war immer Animal von den Muppets. Aber als ich mit dem Schlagzeugspielen begann, versuchte ich, die Schlagzeuger meiner Lieblingsbands nachzuahmen, also wurden natürlich Nicko McBrain und Clive Burr von IRON MAIDEN und Lars Ulrich meine Mentoren. Wenn man anfängt, geht es nicht darum zu wissen, ob dieser Schlagzeuger technisch versierter oder „besser“ ist als der nächste. Man wird von dem angetrieben, mit dem man sich verbindet, und für mich war es die Kraft und Energie dieser Metal-Bands.

Weißt du noch, welchen Song du als erstes gespielt hast?
Der erste Song, den ich zu spielen versuchte, war „The Prisoner“ von Iron Maiden. Es ist ein genialer Schlagzeugeinstieg, irgendwie einfach, aber ziemlich herausfordernd für einen Anfänger, der gerade die Grundlagen der Unabhängigkeit von rechtem Arm und rechtem Bein lernt.

Üben, SKÁLMÖLD und Viking Metal

Welche Rolle spielte ‚Üben‘ für dich? Hast du verschiedene Stile ausprobiert? Was hat dir daran am meisten Spaß gemacht?
Als Kind mit ADHS waren die Drums wie ein Lebensretter. Dort hatte ich den perfekten Ausweg für meine aufgestaute Energie. Wie ich bereits sagte, habe ich mich selbst dazu angetrieben, alle Arten von Stilen zu üben. Und ich liebte die Herausforderung und tue das  immer noch. Ich ging direkt von der Schule in den Übungsraum und spielte allein für zwei bis fünf Stunden am Tag. 

Wie bist du zu SKÁLMÖLD gekommen?
Snæbjörn und ich hatten bereits bei einigen Theaterprojekten zusammengearbeitet. Und als er und Böbbi die Idee für die Band hatten, hat er mich kontaktiert, und ich bin sofort eingestiegen.

Was gefällt dir an SKÁLMÖLD: die Ideen, die Grundlagen der Musik, die Texte?
Alles oben Genannte, aber am meisten ist es die Freundschaft und die Energie, die wir noch immer spüren, wenn wir zusammenspielen. Dass diese Dinge nach dreizehn Jahren immer noch da sind, ist unglaublich.

Die Musik wird oft als „Viking Metal“ bezeichnet. Was hältst du von dieser Beschreibung, diesem Etikett?
Ich weiß nicht wirklich, welche Kriterien erfüllt sein müssen, um als Viking Metal bezeichnet zu werden. Aber wenn diese Kategorisierung den Menschen hilft, zu verstehen, was wir tun, ist es für mich in Ordnung.

Spaß, Begeisterung und Rhythmen

Welche Kriterien verwendest du, um dein Schlagzeug aufzubauen? Welche Rolle spielt die Ausrüstung für dich?
Das ist etwas, das sich mit dem Alter und der Erfahrung ändert. Früher ging es darum, wie cool es aussieht, aber jetzt versuche ich, das Schlagzeug so ergonomisch wie möglich einzurichten. Ich beginne also mit dem Schlagzeughocker als Mittelpunkt und arrangiere dann die Dinge so, dass ich sie erreichen kann, ohne meinen Rücken zu verdrehen oder blöde Bewegungen zu machen. Ich habe meine bevorzugten Trommelgrößen usw. Aber wenn man auf Festivals und so spielt, bekommt man nicht immer zu 100% das, was man will, also lernt man, sich anzupassen und nicht zu sehr an den Details hängen zu bleiben.

Neben deiner Bühnenausrüstung hast du auch „Das Tier“ dabei. Seit wann begleitet es dich? Gibt es Parallelen zwischen deinem Schlagzeugspiel und seinem?
Er ist seit meiner Kindheit mein Idol. Er ist das, was passiert, wenn man sich im Moment vergisst und sich nicht darum kümmert, ob man wie ein Idiot aussieht. Animal und Nicko McBrain sind die Schlagzeuger, die meine Bühnenpersönlichkeit geprägt haben. Nicko hat mir gezeigt, dass man in einer Metal-Band spielen und trotzdem lächeln und Spaß haben kann. Und wenn man das mit Animals Begeisterung mischt, denke ich, dass ich das tue.

Schlagzeugduell

Hättest du gerne einmal ein Schlagzeug-Duell mit „Das Tier“ (eigentlich ja Ronnie Verrell) wie z. B. Dave Grohl?
Verdammt, ja, oder auch mit Dave Grohl, um ehrlich zu sein.

Wenn du Musik hörst oder auf Konzerte gehst: Achtest du besonders auf das Schlagzeugspiel?
Wenn ich Musik höre, achte ich sehr auf den Rhythmus. Nicht nur das Schlagzeugspiel an sich, sondern den Gesamtrhythmus und die Interaktion zwischen den Elementen in der Musik, auch wenn es keine Drums gibt. Ich kann mich in allen möglichen Musikrichtungen verlieren, sei es Pop, Klassik oder Metal, wenn mir der Rhythmus gefällt.

Gibt es einen Schlagzeuger, der dich besonders beeindruckt/interessiert?
Was die Schlagzeuger betrifft, die mich heute beeindrucken, gibt es keinen Zweifel daran, dass Eloy Casagrande von SEPULTURA der beeindruckendste Schlagzeuger ist, der derzeit da draußen ist.

Einige Schlagzeuger spielen unglaublich schnelle und komplizierte Patterns. Was denkst du darüber?
Es gibt Schlagzeuger, die fast unmenschliche Sachen machen, und ich bewundere sie dafür. Ich werde nie in der Lage sein, das zu tun, und das ist in Ordnung. Ich versuche es aber trotzdem! (lacht)
Wenn es zur Musik passt und nicht nur kompliziert oder schnell als athletische Showeinlage ist, bin ich dafür. Selbst die athletische Showeinlage ist in Ordnung, solange es das ist, was es ist.

Drumming als Basis, Schlagzeugsolo, Triolen und Magie

Wie siehst du deine Rolle als Schlagzeuger/Schlagzeug: mehr als Basis der Songs oder als Element, das die Instrumente mit dem Gesang verbindet?
Normalerweise als Grundlage, auf der die anderen aufbauen können, da der Gesang immer zuletzt kommt. Als wir anfingen, live zu spielen, hat sich das ein wenig geändert, da ich angefangen habe, mehr Akzente um die Gesangsphrasen herum hinzuzufügen, ohne den Haupt-Rhythmus zu ändern. Es entwickelt sich also immer weiter.

In den Songs von SKÁLMÖLD spielen ausgedehnte Schlagzeugsoli keine große Rolle. Möchtest du eines Tages ein längeres Solo spielen?
Nicht wirklich. Ich leide unter ständigem Impostersyndrom. Es würde viel Überzeugungsarbeit erfordern, um mich davon zu überzeugen, dass ich es kann oder dass es die Leute interessieren würde. Außerdem gibt es eine Zeit und einen Ort für Schlagzeugsoli, und ich glaube nicht, dass ein Skálmöld-Konzert dieser Ort ist.

Gibt es eine rhythmische Figur, die du besonders gerne spielst? Oder Strukturen, auf die du dich besonders konzentrieren musst?
Ich liebe Triolen und alle Muster, die mit drei über vier spielen. Einige meiner Lieblingsdrumbreaks in Skálmöld-Songs sind Triolen. Zum Beispiel in „Sorg“ vom Album „Baldur“ ca. bei 2:11.

Drum-Stil

Um auf dein Schlagzeugspiel zurückzukommen: Würdest du sagen, dass du deinen eigenen Stil hast? Was macht ihn aus oder anders gesagt: Wie erkennt man, dass du hinter den Drums sitzt?
Ich denke, ich habe meinen eigenen Stil. Aber es ist eine Zusammenstellung von Dingen, die ich auf dem Weg von anderen übernommen habe, und wenn jemand sagen würde, dass es typisch für Jón Geir ist, könnte ich wahrscheinlich sagen, von wem ich das aufgegriffen habe. Ich weiß nicht, ob die Leute mich aus einer Gruppe von Schlagzeugern heraushören würden, wenn sie nur zuhören. Aber wenn man mich auf der Bühne sieht, erkennt man mich immer an diesem idiotischen Grinsen. (lacht)

Ach, ich finde es einfach mitreißend! Du spielst mit SKÁLMÖLD auf großen Bühnen (z.B. auf Festivals), aber auch auf kleineren Bühnen (ich denke zum Beispiel an den „Græni Hatturinn“). Was gefällt dir besser?
Ich liebe es, vor großen Festivalmassen zu spielen. Aber die wahre Magie passiert, wenn man uns auf einer kleinen, schweißtreibenden Bühne mit Leuten direkt vor uns platziert.

Welche kommenden Shows gibt es, auf die du dich freust?
Wacken ist immer etwas Besonderes. Und dann haben wir unsere erste Headliner-Tour, die auf unser neues Album „Ýdalir“ folgt, auf das ich übrigens sehr stolz bin.

Nach dem, was ich bisher gehört habe, ist es ein tolles Album geworden. ‚Typisch SKÁLMÖLD‘ aber mit vielen Überraschungen und großartigen Ideen. Vielen Dank für das Interview und hab weiterhin viel Spaß mit SKÁLMÖLD

A few days ago I announced SKÁLMÖLD’s new album. And wrote that there would be an interview with SKÁLMÖLD’s drummer Jón Geir Jóhannsson.
In this interview, the focus was not on the upcoming album „Ýdalir“, but on Jón Geir as a drummer.
It was about both how he discovered drumming, which path he took, how he came to SKÁLMÖLD, how he puts together his drum set – and what role „The Animal“ from The Muppet Show plays.

In the beginning was: ruined chair upholstery

You got your first drum set when you were 13. Allegedly because, at some point, your parents had had enough of you working on the furniture with all kinds of utensils that could be used as drumsticks.
What was more important in the beginning: to express the different sounds or the rhythm?
It is true – I had ruined the upholstery of several kitchen chairs when I got my first kit.  I think it was mostly about the rhythm and the expression, as the chairs sounded, for the most part, all the same, but in my head, I knew what sound each piece was supposed to represent. 

Did you then have lessons, or were you more of a ’self-educator’?
I was born in a small town in the west fjords called Ísafjörður, and even though it had a very good music school and active cultural scene, it was very classically biased, so there were no drums.  I did learn to play the French horn until I was 15, but by then, the drums had completely taken over everything.  From day one, I learned by playing to records and imitating my favourite albums.

Oh, I find that difficult.
I was lucky that we had an L.P. player that had four speeds, so I could play albums at 16 rpm and analyse rhythms very slowly what each limb was doing until I had figured it out.  Later I tried to order all the instructional books and videos I could find.  There were not many drummers around me to learn from, but because of that shortage, I got a chance to play with all kinds of musicians, most of whom were much older than me, in all kinds of projects, jazz, brass bands, dance band etc. and that diversity taught me a lot.

Growing fascination and “Animal”

Has your enthusiasm for the instrument changed over the years?
I am still as enthusiastic as I was when I started, and I am still learning but of course, the focus changes. When I was starting, it was all about playing – (speed, technique, looking cool), but as I grew as a drummer, I became more and more obsessed with the instrument itself.   I started building my own drums and learning about how the instrument works and what makes it do what it does etc.

Did you have any role models when you started playing drums? (Was it more bands and their music, specifically the drummers, that interested you?) What interested or impressed you about the drummers? Were there songs at that time that you wanted to play, and that was something like the motivation to try out and to improve/differentiate your technique?
My idol since I was a kid was always Animal from the Muppets, but when I started to play the drums, I tried to imitate the drummers of my favourite bands, so naturally, Nicko McBrain and Clive Burr from IRON MAIDEN and Lars Ulrich became my mentors.  When you are starting, it is all about feeling as if you have no idea if that drummer is more technical or “better” than the next one, you are driven by what you connect with, and for me, it was the power and the energy of those metal bands.

Do you remember the first song you played?
The first song I tried to play was “The Prisoner” by Iron Maiden.  It is a brilliant drum intro, kind of basic, but quite a  challenge for a beginner who is learning the basic independence of your right arm and your right leg.

SKÁLMÖLD and Viking Metal

What role did ‚practising‘ play for you? Did you try out different styles? What did you enjoy most about it?
As a kid with ADD, the drums were a lifesaver.   There I got the perfect outlet for built-up energy.   As I said before, I was pushed to practise all kinds of styles, and I loved the challenge, and I still do.   I used to go straight from school to the rehearsal room and just play alone for two and up to five hours a day.

How did you come to SKÁLMÖLD?
Snæbjörn and I had worked together on some theatre projects, and when he and Böbbi got the idea of the band, he contacted me, and I jumped on it right away.

What do you like about SKÁLMÖLD: the ideas, the basics of the music, the lyrics?
All of the above, but mostly it is the friendship and the energy that we still feel when we play together.   That those things are still there after thirteen years is incredible.

The music is often called „Viking metal“. What do you think of this description/categorisation?
I don’t really know what criteria you have to fulfil to be tagged as Viking metal.  But if that categorisation helps people to understand what we do, then it is fine with me.

Fun, enthusiasm and rhythms 

What criteria do you use to assemble your drum set? What role does the equipment play for you?
That is one of the things that change with age and experience. Once, it would have been about how it looks cool, but now   I try to set up the kit as physically ergonomically as possible.  So I begin with the drum throne as a centre point and then arrange things so I can reach them without twisting my back or doing any stupid movements.  I have my favourite sizes of drums etc., but when you are playing festivals and stuff, you don’t always get 100% of what you want, so you learn to adapt and don’t get too hooked up on the details that much.

In addition to your „stage equipment“, you also have „Animal“. Since when has it accompanied you? Are there parallels between your drumming and his?
He has been my idol since I was a kid.  He is what happens when you forget yourself at the moment and stop caring if you look like an idiot.  Animal and Nicko McBrain are the drummers that shape my on-stage persona.  Nicko taught me that you can play in a metal band and still smile and look like you are having fun, and if you mix Animal’s enthusiasm with that, I guess that’s what I do.

Drum Battle

Would you have liked to have had a drum battle with „Animal“ (actually it is Ronnie Verrell)  like Dave Grohl  had?
Damn, yes, or with Dave Grohl, for that matter.

When you listen to music or go to concerts: Do you pay special attention to the drumming? What do you listen to in particular? 
  When I listen to music, I get very hung up on the rhythm.  Not drumming per se but the overall rhythm and the interaction between elements in the music, even if there are no drums.  I can lose myself in all kinds of music, be it pop, classical, or metal if I like the rhythm.  

Is there a drummer who particularly impresses or interests you at the moment?
About drummers that impress me today, there is no doubt that Eloy Casagrande from SEPULTURA is the most impressive drummer out there today.

Some drummers play incredibly fast and complicated patterns. What do you think about that?
There are drummers out there doing almost non-human stuff, and  I admire them.  I will never be able to do this, and that is just fine. But  I still try! ( laughs) 

If it fits the music and is not just complicated or fast as some athletic show-off, I am all for it.   Even the athletic show-off is fine for what it is.

Drumming as base, drumsolo, triplets and magic

How do you see your role as a drummer/drumming: more as the basis of the songs or as an element that connects the instruments with the vocals?
Usually, as a foundation that the others can build on as the vocals always come last, and they play a lot of the rhythm that has been laid down.   When we started playing live, it changed a bit as I started to add a bit more accents around the vocal phrases without changing the main rhythm.   So it is always evolving.

In SKÁLMÖLD’s songs, extended drum solos don’t play a big role. Would you like to play a longer solo one day?
Not really.   I suffer from constant imposter syndrome, and I it would take a lot to convince me I could do it or that people would care for that.  
Besides, there is a time and a place for drum solos, and I don´t think a Skálmöld concert is that place.

Is there a rhythmic figure that you particularly like to play? Or any structures that you have to concentrate on in particular?
I love triplets and all patterns that play around with three over four.  Some of my favourite drum breaks in Skálmöld songs are triplets. For example, in “Sorg” from the album “Baldur” about.min 2:11.

Drum-Style

To return to your drumming: Would you say you have your own style? What makes it different, or in other words: how can one recognise that you are behind the drums?
I guess I have my own style, but it is a culmination of things I have borrowed from others along the way and what someone would say was quintessential Jón Geir I could probably point out from whom I picked that up.   I don’t know if people would pick me out of a line of drummers if they were just listening, but I you see me on stage, you can always know me from that idiotic grin. (laughs)

You play with SKÁLMÖLD on big stages, e.g. at the festivals but also on smaller stages. I think of the „Græni Hatturinn“, for example. What do you like better?
I love playing for big festival crowds, but the real magic happens when you put us on a small sweaty stage with people right in our faces.

Which upcoming show are you looking forward to the most?
Wacken is always special, and then we have our first headline tour coming to follow up on our new album “Ýdalir”, which I am very proud of, by the way

From what I have heard so far, it has become a great album. Typical SKÁLMÖLD but with many surprises and great ideas.

SKÁLMÖLD: „Ýdalir“ im August und Tour ab Oktober

Am 18. August 2023 veröffentlichen SKÁLMÖLD – endlich – ihr sechstes Studioalbum.
Es trägt den Titel „Ýdalir“. Damit bleiben sie ihrer Linie, Songs zu entwickeln, die auf isländischen Sagen und der nordischen Mythologie basieren, treu.

Ýdalir – die Eibentäler – sind in der nordischen Mythologie der Wohnsitz des Gottes Ullr. Ullr oder Ullur, der als geschickter Jäger und Bogenschütze dargestellt wird, der auf Skiern über das Land gleitet. Auch für ihn gibt es einen Song auf dem neuen Album.

Zuletzt hatten SKÁLMÖLD 2018 das Studioalbum „Sorgir“ veröffentlicht. 2019 beschlossen sie, eine kreative Pause einzulegen. In den vergangenen Jahren hatten sie icht nur fünf Alben herausgebracht, viele Shows gespielt (u.a. 2013 mit dem Isländischen Symphonie Orchester) und waren mehrfach auf Tour. Mit der Pause wollten sie sich Zeit geben, um über neue Songs nachzudenken, aber auch nach den vielen Touren mehr Zeit mit den Familien zu verbringen und die Batterien aufzuladen.
2020 veröffentlichten sie zu ihrem 10jährigen Bestehen das Album „10 Year Anniversary – Live in Reykjavík“.
Und dann kam Corona und die Pause wurde länger als geplant.

„Ratatoskur“ – das ‚Botschaften-Eichhörnchen‘

Aber jetzt sind sie wieder da und haben mit „Ratatoskur“ den ersten Song aus dem neuen Album „Ýdalir“ veröffentlicht. Sie sind also zurück. Und das, wie Sänger und Gitarrist Björgvin Sigurðsson sagt, „ …voller Energie und Hunger, neue Musik zu machen und sie unseren Fans zu präsentieren“.

Ýdalir ist ein Album, auf das wir uns sehr freuen und hoffen, dass es euch genauso gut gefällt wie uns. Es ist an der Zeit, dass wir euch etwas neue Musik präsentieren. Also genießt es! Skál!

Björgvin

Zu „Ratatoskur“ erzählt er: „Die erste Single, die wir euch präsentieren, ‘Ratatoskur’, ist genau das. Angetrieben von einer eingängigen und folkigen Melodie. Aber trotzdem schwer und episch. Alles, was man von einem Lied erwarten würde, das dem Eichhörnchen gewidmet ist, das auf dem Yggdrasill auf und ab läuft und dem Drachen Níðhöggur, der unter einer der Wurzeln des Yggdrasill wohnt, Botschaften vom Adler in der Spitze des Weltenbaums überbringt, oder?“

Heute veröffentlicht Kjel Braaten mit „Jotun“ eine neue Single.
Wie auch die Songs der EP „The Cabin“, die im letzten Monat herauskam ist „Jotun“ kein aktuell komponiertes Stück. Es ist daher ein wenig anders als das, was Kjell Braaten auf seinen Alben „Ferd“ (2020), „Bronseplassen“ (2021) und „Blóta“ (2022) veröffentlicht hat.

„Jotun“ und auch das im Mai folgende „Ragnarök“ zeigen weitere Facetten seines musikalischen Spektrums. Neben seiner eigenen Musik hat Kjell Braaten auch für Theater und Film (zuletzt für die Serie „Vikings Valhalla“) geschrieben. Außerdem stand er im letzten Jahr mit NEBALA auf der Bühne und vorher bereits mit WARDRUNA. Und er war an weiteren Bands beteiligt (z.B. EHWAZ), hat mit verschiedenen Projekten und Künstlern zusammengearbeitet u.a. FOLKET BORTAFOR NORDAVINDEN.

Auch wenn die verschiedenen Projekte und Veröffentlichungen anders sind als die Musik seiner letzten Alben, gibt es doch Überschneidungen, gemeinsame Ideen und Themen. Dies hat sicher auch damit zu tun, dass er immer schon mit verschiedenen Musikstilen und Klangräumen (ob nun natürlichen oder elektronisch erzeugten) gearbeitet hat.
Dies macht auch den Reiz von „Jotun“ aus.

Jotun – „Riesenhaftes“ ‚sichtbar‘ gemacht

Der Beginn des Stückes klingt bedrohlich und ich musste an Szenen aus „Attack On Titan“ denken, in denen die Titanen die Menschen angreifen.

Verschiedene Percussionsinstrumente verleihen dem donnernden Vorangehen dennoch eine gewisse Leichtigkeit. Die einsetzenden Hörner unterstreichen die Vorwärtsbewegung. Geräusche und die tiefe Laute lassen keinen Zweifel daran, dass etwas Unheimliches vorgeht.

Nach einem kurzen Innehalten wird der Marsch fortgesetzt, durchgängig begleitet von Horn und Stimme. Das Ganze hat etwas Beängstigendes und gleichzeitig Erhabenes. Es ist nicht eindeutig, ob sie Gutes oder Böses im Schilde führen.

Das Situation verdichtet sich, da die Intensität der Trommeln zunimmt. Das Ende ist offen.

Das Stück ist perfekt für Situationen, in denen es darum geht, dass sich jemand Ungewissem oder gar Bedrohlichem stellen muss. Ob im Film, einem Videogame oder zu einer Erzählung.

Macht, Weisheit, Naturgewalten und Chaos

Jotun (oder Jötunn) wird meist mit „Riese“ übersetzt. Dass die Jötnar tatsächlich ‚übermenschlich groß‘ sind, geht aus den Geschichten der Eddas nicht hervor. Ihr meist bedrohlicher Charakter allerdings schon.

Die Jötnar sind in der nordischen Mythologie die ersten Wesen, die zu Beginn der Zeit auftauchten. Sie sind mit den Naturgewalten und dem Chaos verbunden und sind oft Gegner der Asen und Wanen und auch der Menschen.  

In der nordischen Mythologie werden die Jötunn als Wesen mit großer Macht und auch Weisheit dargestellt. Aber sie gelten auch als chaotisch und wild.

Jötnar, Riesen, Titanen, Oni, Asura und andere ‚riesenhafte‘ Wesen

Wesen, die Gegenspieler von Göttern oder Menschen sind, gibt es in allen Mythologien und religiösen Schriften. Weil es anscheinend hilfreich ist, einer Bedrohung eine vorstellbare Form zu geben.

In der griechischen Mythologie gibt es die Giganten, riesenhaft und stärker als Menschen. Wesen, die aus dem Blut von Uranus entstanden sein sollen.

In der japanischen Mythologie gibt es die Oni, eine Art von riesenhaften Dämonen, die oft als sehr stark, aber auch als ungeschickt oder töricht dargestellt werden.

In der indischen Mythologie werden Riesen oder riesenhafte Wesen als „Asuras“ bezeichnet. Die Asuras sind eine Gruppe von Wesen, die oft als Feinde der Götter oder „Devas“ dargestellt werden.

Die Liste ließe sich noch weiter fortsetzen. Kurz gesagt: Wesen, die ‚übermenschlich‘ aber nicht unbedingt ‚göttlich‘ sind, die dem Menschen und sogar den Göttern feindlich gegenüberstehen, gibt es in Erzählungen überall auf der Welt.

Kein Wunder, dass ihnen auch Bands wie IN FLAMES („Jotun“ auf „Whoracle“), SKÁLMÖLD „(Með Jötnum“ auf „Með Vættum“) und ENSLAVED („Jotunblod“ auf „Mardraum“) Songs gewidmet haben, wenn sie in vielen Geschichten und Legenden solch eine wichtige Rolle spielen.

„Jotun“, the new single by Kjell Braaten (release date 18 April 2023)

Today Kjel Braaten releases a new single, „Jotun“. Like the songs from the EP „The Cabin“, which came out last month, „Jotun“ is not a currently composed track. It is therefore a little different from what Kjell Braaten has released on his albums „Ferd“ (2020), „Bronseplassen“ (2021) and „Blóta“ (2022).

„Jotun“ and also the following „Ragnarök“ in May show further facets of his musical spectrum. Besides his music, Kjell Braaten has also written for theatre and film (most recently for the series „Vikings Valhalla“). He also performed on stage with NEBALA last year and with WARDRUNA before that. And he has been involved in other bands (e.g. EHWAZ) and collaborated with various projects and artists including FOLKET BORTAFOR NORDAVINDEN.

Even though the various projects and releases are different from the music on his last albums, there are overlaps, common ideas and themes. This certainly has to do with the fact that he has always worked with different musical styles and sound spaces (whether natural or electronically generated). This is also what makes „Jotun“ so appealing.

Jotun – ‚Giantness‘ made ‚visible‘

The beginning of the piece sounds threatening and I had to think of scenes from „Attack On Titan“ where the Titans attack the humans.

Various percussion instruments nevertheless lend a certain lightness to the thunderous advance. The horns that come in underline the forward movement. Noises and the low lute leave no doubt that something sinister is going on.

After a brief pause, the march continues, accompanied throughout by a horn and voice. The whole thing has something frightening and at the same time sublime. It is not clear whether they are up to good or evil.

The situation thickens as the intensity of the drums increases. With an open end.

The piece is perfect for situations where someone has to face uncertainty or even threat. Whether in a film, a video game or a narrative.

Power, wisdom, forces of nature and chaos

Jotun (or Jötunn) is usually translated as ‚giant‘. That the Jötnar are actually ’superhumanly large‘ is not clear from the stories of the Eddas. Their mostly threatening character, however, does.

In Norse mythology, the Jötnar are the first beings to appear at the beginning of time. They are associated with the forces of nature and chaos and are often opponents of the Aesir and the Vanir, as well as of humans. 

In Norse mythology, the Jötunn are depicted as beings with great power and also wisdom. But they are also considered chaotic and wild.

Jötnar, giants, titans, oni, asura and other ‚giant-like‘ beings.

Beings who are opposites of gods or humans exist in all mythologies and religious writings. Because it is apparently helpful to give an imaginable form to a threat.

In Greek mythology, there are giants, bigger and stronger than humans. Beings that are said to have been created from the blood of Uranus.

In Japanese mythology, there are the Oni, a type of giant-like demon, often portrayed as very strong but also clumsy or foolish.

In Indian mythology, giants or giant-like beings are called „Asuras“. The Asuras are a group of beings who are often portrayed as enemies of the gods or „devas“.

The list could go on and on. In short, beings who are ’superhuman‘ but not necessarily ‚divine‘, who are hostile to humans and even the gods, exist in narratives all over the world.

No wonder that bands like IN FLAMES („Jotun“ on „Whoracle“), SKÁLMÖLD „(Með Jötnum“ on „Með Vættum“) and ENSLAVED („Jotunblod“ on „Mardraum“) have also dedicated songs to them when they play such an important role in many stories and legends.

Interview mit Þráinn Árni Baldvinsson zu seinem Soloalbum

Þráinn Árni Baldvinsson ist bestimmt vielen von euch als Gitarrist der isländischen Metal Band SKÁLMÖLD bekannt.

SKÁLMÖLD wurden 2009 gegründet. In ihren bisher sechs Studioalben geht es ihnen darum, das kulturelle Erbe Islands und der Wikingerzeit zu würdigen. Die Lyrics sind daher nicht nur auf Isländisch sondern dazu in einer traditionellen Form verfasst.

Im heutigen Interview geht es aber nicht um SKÁLMÖLD, sondern um das Solo-Album, dass Þráinn demnächst veröffentlichen wird. Bisher gibt es mit „Stringendo“ einen ersten Vorgeschmack.

Wir haben uns über das kommende Album, Instrumentalmusik, die Bands, in denen Þráinn spielt (SKÁLMÖLD, BASTARÐUR), die Freude an der Arbeit als Lehrer und darüber, welche Rolle Mythologie und Geschichte in seinem Leben spielen, unterhalten.

About the interview

Þráinn Árni Baldvinsson is probably known to many of you as the guitarist of the Icelandic metal band SKÁLMÖLD.
SKÁLMÖLD was founded in 2009. In their six studio albums so far, they are concerned with paying tribute to the cultural heritage of Iceland and the Viking Age. The lyrics are therefore not only written in Icelandic but also in a traditional form. Today’s interview is not about SKÁLMÖLD, but about the upcoming solo album that Þráinn will release.
So far there is a first foretaste with „Stringendo“.

We talked about the upcoming album, instrumental music, the bands Þráinn plays in (SKÁLMÖLD, BASTARÐUR), the joy of working as a teacher and the role mythology and history play in his life.

Differences are refreshing; music, horses and fly-fishing

Þráinn, what should our readers know about you or what do you want to tell about yourself?

I grew up in the north of Iceland on a small farm. Music was always most interesting to me and my parents were both very much into music and my father still is. My mother passed away many years ago but she was always encouraging me to follow my dream to become a musician. Enjoy life and help others as well.
I´m married, I have two daughters. I love to help out at my father’s horse farm.

I own a music school where I teach and ensure everything works correctly for the students and the other teachers. When I´m not touring or teaching guitar I love to go fly-fishing and enjoy nature.

You play in SKÁLMÖLD and BASTARÐUR – bands that make different music. What do you see as the differences between these bands? Is it the difference that appeals to you or what is the significance of the bands for you?

I love playing in Bastarður and yes, because of the difference between the two bands it´s refreshing. The songs are totally different from the Skálmöld songs but just as fun to play. It´s easier to play the Bastarður songs but challenging at the same time.

What are your tasks in BASTARÐUR? [BASTARÐUR is the band by Aðalbjörn Tryggvason (SÓLSTAFIR) and Birgir Jónsson (DIMMA)]

I was asked to play on the album [„Satan‘s Loss Of Sons”] so I just went to the studio and recorded solos and stuff. Then Addi asked me to play in a video shoot and then a few shows. I may have a riff or two for the next album. You never know but Addi is the main songwriter and wrote all of that first album. At least 99% of it.

And now a solo album – was that always your wish to release such an album?

Yes. I wanted to do this for many years now and when Skálmöld decided to take a break in 2019 I started actively working on my solo project.

Is there a common thread like a theme running through the album? Or are the pieces the realisation of different musical ideas that you have tried out and developed over the past years?

The theme is basically Þráinn´s life. I´m not doing this for anybody else, It´s a very selfish thing. I am doing this for me and me alone. The idea of this first solo album is to get out songs that are a work in progress or have been ready for some time. It is because I need to clean out the hard drive in my head to make space for more music. Every time I finish a song for Skálmöld or anybody: really, it makes me write more, the ideas never run out. If you keep at it you never run out of ideas. You live in music and musical ideas are everywhere. If you experience a shortage of ideas you just need to take a step back from what you are doing, try a different kind of music, then get back at what you want to do and … bam! Ideas come at you. I promise.

Heavy metal with surprises

Have you decided on a style? It is said that it will be a heavy metal album – is that true? Or will there be completely different songs?

There will be songs that will surprise some people but the major element is heavy metal. I will at some point make an album with only acoustic guitars but not until I´ve finished this one. I need this to be a basically heavy metal guitar album.

In the first song you released, there are also ‚quotes‘ from classical music. What is the idea behind this connection?

It just happened. I grew up listening to Accept and bands that incorporated classical music into their metal music. Ritchie Blackmore is my guitar god among others and as you know, he uses a lot of classical melodies in his songs and solos. But this just … happened. And by releasing this as the first single, people will not just hear new music made by me but also something they have (hopefully) heard before in Rondo alla Turca by Mozart.

Do you have a classical education on the guitar or just a lot of fun with classical music?

Both. I started learning the electric guitar but I was lucky, both with my guitar teacher and my music teacher in elementary school. They showed me cool stuff to listen to all the time and I wanted to be able to play classical guitar as well. Maybe we should let young students play what they want to play and not tell them what to play? Just show them cool stuff and then they will be interested in learning classical music? All music is good, some of it is better, but you know what I mean. Let´s enjoy music whatever you want to call the music. Classical, metal, Viking metal, pop … shit or gold. Music is just music. Right?

Music is just music

Yes, any kind of music can be shit or gold, as you said.  Above all, it should be for the musician first and not for the others. On your album, you play instrumental music. I’ve been talking recently with other guitarists who have released instrumental albums about whether or not the guitar ‚replaces‘ the vocals. How is that with you?

I never write melodies for my guitar with singing in mind. I have been listening to a lot of Marty Friedman and I think he sometimes writes melodies that we can imagine being vocal melodies, sung by a human being. I might try that. But I have never thought of writing melodies on the guitar in that way. But I do write some vocal melodies for Skálmöld.

The question is often asked about musical influences. Which guitarist has influenced you? Did you ‚copy‘ something from other guitarists when you started to develop your style?

I think Ritchie Blackmore is my first guitar hero. I still listen to his music and I tried to BE Mr Blackmore. Bruce Kulick and Ace Frehley, Dave Murray and Adrian Smith are also major influences on me. Kirk Hammett is someone I loved and still do and then Yngwie J. Malmsteen. I practised a lot when learning his solos as well as Jason Becker´s and Marty Friedman´s. I´m inspired by everything that moves me but these players are probably my main influences and the guys I would copy all the time, trying to learn their solos and listening to them nonstop means that their music is always in my head and heart.

Kids are honest and awesome

Now you are also something of a ‚role model‘ for others in various roles. Or don’t you see yourself that way?

I don’t think about it but I know other guitar players look to me for advice and lessons. It is important to have someone you can look to and say; “hey, I want to do what he is doing”. But it´s only music you should focus on. Lifestyle and people´s view on life Is another matter. If I can help you on your musical journey, I´m here for you. You have to be able to mirror yourself in others and if you never see anyone whom you look up to you´re missing out on something magical. That´s why we, the people on this earth, need role models that are different and can offer different things. Everybody needs role models and we have to make sure kids can find their role models in every aspect of life.

You are a guitar teacher, you give tips on guitar playing on your social media channels, and you make music with children of kindergarten age. How did that come about? What experience do you have there: which songs, which style of music goes down best with the children? I have noticed that the children also like to listen to the music of SKÁLMÖLD.

Music should be available to everyone, anytime, everywhere. No matter age or status in society. I was asked to play in a kindergarten millions of years ago and I still do it because it´s fun and the kids are honest and awesome. I play whatever songs I want to play and all the songs they ask me to play. I often get asked to play AC/DC and Rammstein songs. I do as they command.

Help and guide – interest and passion should be the driving force

What do young people who learn guitar from you want to know about music, the music business and about you?

Every student is different from the next. I try to help them in the best possible way. But it´s very different from student to student. Every year a 6-year-old walks in and only wants to learn “Back In Black” and every year someone wants to learn the “Hotel California” –  solo. Someone wants to learn all the Billie Eilish songs etc etc.
A lot of students want to learn Skálmöld songs and everyone should have an idea of what they want to play. Their interest in music should be the main driving force in their way to success playing the guitar. Through their interest and passion, I show them the best way to become the best they can be. A good teacher should show the way, guide, and help, but keep out of the students’ way because every student needs to find his own way and work hard because the teacher can’t put in the hard work for them. Just help and guide.

And what do you want them to take away with them?

Happiness and the feeling that they control their own destiny. If my student can look back at the time he was my student and say that he is happy and feels he has improved, then all is good.

„Be here, now, and make sure you make the world a better place by being humble, grateful and kind.“ This quote comes from a recent interview you gave at “The Valknut”. You told us that you have been active in Ásatruárfélagið since 2011. That your interest in the stories led you there. And also that respect for others and respect for history is important to you. Also to learn from it. What influence do these have on your everyday life?

I go to work every day with a smile on my face and It´s not forced, I am genuinely happy starting each day doing the thing I love which is being in music. Playing an instrument and being there for others that want to experience the same thing. I have my radio shows on the national radio talking about guitars and guitar music and I play in bands with my friends. What could be better? Helping others is the noblest thing that you can do and I try to help as many as I can at the same time I do what I know is the best thing for me and my family. If you are happy in life you should share that happiness.
Regarding history, only people who know history can avoid the same old mistakes and people who know nothing of history make the mistakes again and again. To be fully aware and responsible you have to know about the past.

… and the magic of mythology

You also talked about the magic that comes from mythology and that you like the atmosphere that comes with it. Can you explain that a little bit? 

Every story is a bit of magic. When your grandparents tell you a story, true or a myth, you get lost in the storytelling. Why do most people get a nice relaxing feeling sitting close to a campfire or a fireplace? Because that is what kept the human race alive and sitting next to the fire people sang and told stories. Magic. That atmosphere is still here for everyone to enjoy. Sometimes you just have to stop and stay in the moment. Enjoy the silence … just be.

Do these basic ideas or the basic feeling also play a role in your album?

Yes because this is who I am. I am comfortable and happy in life so yes; it is in everything I do.

Finally, a question about SKÁLMÖLD: You are going on tour with FINNTROLL in autumn. Will there also be a new album?

Yes, finally a tour and next year a new album. We are writing, sharing ideas, and throwing riffs at each other. We are all very excited about touring again and writing for a new album. Re-energized and happy. Life in the Skálmöld camp is good.

The first single from your upcoming album is called „Stringendo“ and was released on 17.6.2022. The album is scheduled for release in early 2023. Can you already reveal what the album will be called?

All I can say is that “Stringendo” is a good example of how the album will be. Full of energy, positive vibes and guitar shredding. All is good.
