Die schwedische Band ORBIT CULTURE hat es geschafft. Mit unermüdlichem Einsatz und einer beständigen Weiterentwicklung haben die Shooting Stars eine Reihe von Alben entwickelt, die sie letztlich zu einer der spannendsten und vielversprechendsten Bands gemacht haben. Sie waren bisher beim Label Seek & Strike, was ich sehr schätze. Nun sind sie aber bei Century Media unter Vertrag und „Death Above Life“ ist das erste Album unter dieser Label-Fahne.

Den Grundstein ihres charakteristischen markerschütternden legten sie damals mit ihrem dritten Album „Nija“ aus dem Jahr 2020. Danach folgten noch die EP „Shaman“ und der Longplayer „Descent“ 2023. ORBIT CULTURE haben mit diesen Releases bei mir immer Höchstnoten abgeräumt. Außerdem haben wir mit Niklas 2021 ein Interview geführt.

Können ORBIT CULTURE also den Level halten?

Nach dem ersten Durchhören muss ich leider sagen, dass ich das nicht in vollem Umfang positiv bestätigen kann. Mit ihrem unverkennbaren Sound rennen sie grundsätzlich bei mir offene Türen ein. Das hat sich nicht geändert. Diesem Sound kann man schlichtweg nichts entgegensetzen. Es ist ein zerstörerisches Erdbeben, der von einem brutalen Orkan begleitet wird. Der Opener „Inferna“ lässt genau diese Vibes aufleben! Es startet ohne Vorgeplänkel direkt und hart. Man fühlt sich sofort wieder heimisch in der ORBIT CULTURE Welt. Gesanglich gibt es eine breite Palette und es werden schöne epische Momente eingestreut. Ein perfekter monumentaler Einsteiger, der fast sieben Minuten überragende Unterhaltung bietet.

Die Drums sind knallharte Herzdruckmassagen und könnten nicht martialischer klingen. Ein wahre Wucht und immer wieder ein umwerfendes Erlebnis, was dem Hörer entgegengeschmettert wird. „Bloodhound“ treibt es auf die Spitze. ORBIT CULTURE stürmen zunächst sehr straight und gnadenlos voran. Dann gibt es eine Verschnaufpause nach 2 1/2 Minuten. Allerdings finde ich den Break eher unangebracht und verwässert die an sich höllische Feuersbrunst. Der Song ist ein Blitzangriff und so hätte er auch belassen werden sollen. Dies wäre ein Song gewesen, der mit einer kurzen knackigen Spielzeit meiner Meinung nach besser gewirkt hätte. Kurz und kompromisslos wäre die besser Devise gewesen!

„Inside The Waves“ ist ebenfalls ein solider Song, der wieder mehr in die epische Richtung geht, kann aber so einem Song wie „Inferna“ nicht das Wasser reichen. „Tales Of War“ wird symphonisch eingeleitet, bis diese Töne einem längeren Instrumentalpart weichen, der sehr massiv rüberkommt. Mit dem Einsetzen des Gesangs nimmt der Song leicht an Fahrt auf. Hier zeigen sich wieder geschmeidige Tempiwechsel, so dass der Song eine schöne Dynamik entwickelt. Und ein ansprechendesvGitarrensolo wird ebenfalls angeboten.

Mein erster Eindruck

ist ehrlicherweise nach den ersten vier Songs gespalten. Natürlich sind ORBIT CULTURE weit davon entfernt langweilige Kost anzubieten, aber mich überzeugen die Songs dieses Mal nicht zu 100 Prozent, wenn man mal von dem fantastischen Opener „Inferna“ absieht. Ich habe schon das Gefühl, dass ORBIT CULTURE so ein wenig mit angezogener Handbremse agieren.

Der dämonische Faktor mit seine ungezügelten Wildheit und ungestümen Brutalität geht mir ein wenig verloren. Und auch wenn ich die kraftvolle melodische Komponente von ORBIT CULTURE mag, so erscheint mir auf dem neuen Album zu viel davon präsent zu sein. Die Songs kicken mich einfach nicht mehr dermaßen wie auf dem letzten Album, wo ORBIT CULTURE noch so „groß und aggressiv wie möglich“ klingen wollten und dies auch geschafft hatten.

Und die nächsten Songs haben zwar auch ihre großen Momente, aber mein Eindruck bleibt. Die Songs bewegen sich häufig im Midtempo, was bei mir manchmal das Gefühl der Eintönigkeit hervorruft und einschläfernd wirkt. Das ist mir bei ORBIT CULTURE noch nie passiert. „Death Above Life“ macht da als Titeltrack keine Ausnahme. Der Synthiepart ist irgendwie auch öde… so leid mir das tut. Und der Song läuft gemächlich gelangweilt dem Ende hingegen. Ich vermute, dass ORBIT CULTURE den Songs irgendwie eine cineastische Ausstrahlung verleihen wollen, aber irgendwie verfängt sich das bei mir nicht in der Art und Weise.

Da kommt mir ein Sturm gerade recht. „The Storm“ bläst mal wieder ordentlich die Gehörgänge durch. Und die kämpferischen hymnischen Chöre ab der dritten Minute habe ich so auch noch nie bei ORBIT CULTURE gehört. Ungewohnt, aber gar nicht schlecht. Doch ich sehe das mit gemischten Gefühlen, weil ich nicht weiß, wo ORBIT CULTURE nun mit ihrem Sound hinwollen. Ich glaube, dass die Band gerade auf eine schwierigen Gratwanderung ist. Sie arbeiten weiter an ihrem Sound und probieren sich aus. Ich denke schon, dass dieses Album bei der Fanbase hitzig diskutiert werden wird.

„Neural Collapse“ gehört mit zu meinen Lieblingen auf dem Album. Ein hochdynamischer mitreißender Song, der mich mit seinem Gesang voll abholt. Die Wechsel zwischen Aggression und Melodie sind packend und zeigen, wie stark Niklas Karlsson seine Stimme inzwischen beherrscht. Der Song hat ein Konzept, was mich völlig überzeugt und umhaut. Es wird kontrolliertes Chaos geboten ohne sich darin zu verlieren. Aber auch hier hätte der Song nach vier Minuten beendet sein können und alles wäre gut gewesen. Stattdessen folgt wieder ein Synthiepart, der den Song meiner Meinung nach unnötig runterfährt und dem Song nicht dienlich ist.

Apropos runterfahren…zum Abschluss noch die Ballade „The Path I Walk“ genießen, in der uns Niclas mit seiner schönen Stimme beschaulich und nachdenklich verwöhnt. Bei einer Spielzeit von fünf Minuten erwarte ich natürlich einiges. So viel passiert allerdings nicht mehr. Es setzen noch mal Drums und Synthies ein, die dem Ganzen Epik und Drama verleihen. Ist ganz nett, kommt jedoch nicht gegen die Ballad „Through Time“ vom letzten Album an und wirkt etwas blass im Vergleich.

Fazit

Mit „Death Above Life“ liefern ORBIT CULTURE ein Album ab, das zweifellos auf hohem Niveau produziert ist und mit einzelnen Glanzmomenten wie dem monumentalen Opener „Inferna“ oder dem dynamischen „Neural Collapse“ seine ganze Wucht entfaltet. Doch trotz dieser Highlights gelingt es der Band nicht, an die kompromisslose Größe und Aggression der Vorgängerwerke anzuschließen. Statt ungestümer Wildheit dominieren häufig groovige Midtempo-Passagen und stadiontaugliche Hymnen, die zwar massentauglich wirken, aber nicht immer die gleiche Intensität transportieren. Es will groß und episch sein, verliert dabei aber etwas von ihrer unberechenbaren Wildheit.

So bleibt am Ende ein zwiespältiger Eindruck: „Death Above Life“. Die Hoffnung bleibt, dass der Wechsel zu einem Major Label nicht endgültig den Weg in Richtung Verwässerung bedeutet, sondern ORBIT CULTURE künftig wieder kompromissloser und unberechenbarer aufzuspielen.

The Swedish band ORBIT CULTURE has made it. With tireless dedication and constant development, the shooting stars have developed a series of albums that have ultimately made them one of the most exciting and promising bands around. They were on the great Seek & Strike label for a long time. But then they are signed to Century Media and „Death Above Life“ is the first album under this major label.

They laid the foundation for their characteristic trademark shaking sound with their third album „Nija“ from 2020, which was followed by the EP „Shaman“ and the longplayer „Descent“ in 2023. ORBIT CULTURE have always scored top marks with these releases. We also conducted an interview with Niklas in 2021.

So can ORBIT CULTURE hold this level?

After listening to it, I’m sorry to say that I can’t say that completely this time. Their unmistakable sound blows me away every time. That hasn’t changed. There’s simply nothing that can compete with this powerful sound. It’s a destructive earthquake accompanied by a brutal hurricane. The opener “Inferna” revives exactly these vibes! It starts directly and hard without any preliminaries. You immediately feel at home again in the ORBIT CULTURE world. Vocally, there is a wide range and beautiful epic moments are sprinkled throughout. A perfect monumental opener that offers almost seven minutes of outstanding entertainment.

The drums are hard-hitting chest-bursting beats and couldn’t sound any more martial. A real force to be reckoned with and always a stunning experience, which is blasted at the listener. „Bloodhound“ takes it to the extreme. At first, ORBIT CULTURE storm forward very straight and mercilessly. Then there is a breather after 2 1/2 minutes. However, I find the break rather inappropriate and dilutes the hellish blaze. The song is a lightning attack and should have been left as such. This would work better with a short, crisp playing time in my opinion. Short and uncompromising!

“Inside The Waves” is also a solid song that leans more toward the epic, but it can’t hold a candle to a song like “Inferna.” “Tales Of War” begins symphonically, until these tones give way to a longer instrumental part that comes across massive. With the onset of vocals, the song picks up speed slightly. Here, smooth tempo changes are evident again, allowing the song to develop a nice dynamic. An appealing guitar solo is also offered.

My first impression

is split after the first four songs. Of course, ORBIT CULTURE are far from offering boring music, but this time around, the songs don’t convince me 100 percent, apart from the fantastic opener “Inferna„. I think that ORBIT CULTURE are holding back a little.

The demonic factor with its unbridled wildness and impetuous brutality is a little lost on me. And even though I like the powerful melodic component of ORBIT CULTURE, there seems to be too much of it on the new album. The songs just don’t kick me as much as on the last album „Descent“, where ORBIT CULTURE wanted to sound as „big and aggressive as possible“ and succeeded in doing so.

And the next songs also have their great moments, but my impression remains. The songs are often mid-tempo, which sometimes gives me a feeling of monotony.This has never happened to me with ORBIT CULTURE. „Death Above Life“, the title track, is no exception. The synth part is also kind of dull. And the song runs leisurely and bored towards the end. I suspect that ORBIT CULTURE somehow want to give the songs a cinematic aura, but it doesn’t catch me this way.

A storm comes at just the right time. „The Storm“ once again blows your ears to pieces. And I’ve never heard ORBIT CULTURE’s heroic, anthemic choruses (from the third minute onwards) like this before. Unusual, but not bad at all. But I have mixed feelings about it, because I don’t know where ORBIT CULTURE want to go with their sound. I think the band is currently walking a difficult tightrope. They are still working on their sound and trying things out. I think this album is going to be a hotly debated album with the fanbase.

„Neural Collapse“ is one of my favorites on the album. A highly dynamic, rousing song that really gets me with its vocals. The changes between aggression and melody are gripping and show just how much Niklas Karlsson has mastered his voice. The song has a concept that completely convinces and blows me away. It offers controlled chaos without getting lost in it. But here, too, the song could have ended after four minutes and everything would have been fine. Instead, another synth part follows, which in my opinion brings the song down unnecessarily and doesn’t serve the song.

Speaking of driving down… enjoy the ballad „The Path I Walk“ at the end, in which Niclas give us a wonderful time with his beautiful voice in a contemplative and thoughtful manner. With a playing time of five minutes, I expect a lot. However, not that much happens. Drums and synths kick in, adding epicness and drama. It’s quite nice, but can’t compete with the ballad „Through Time“ from the last album.

Conclusion

With „Death Above Life“, ORBIT CULTURE deliver an album that is undoubtedly produced to a high standard and unfolds its full force with individual moments of brilliance such as the monumental opener „Inferna“ or the dynamic „Neural Collapse“. However, despite these highlights, the band is unable to match the uncompromising grandeur and aggression of its predecessors. Instead of impetuous ferocity, groovy mid-tempo passages and stadium-ready anthems often dominate, which may seem suitable for the masses but don’t always convey the same intensity. It wants to be big and epic, but loses some of their impetuous wildness.

In the end, an ambivalent impression remains: „Death Above Life“. The hope remains that the switch to a major label does not mean a step towards calmer waters and that ORBIT CULTURE will once again play more uncompromisingly and unpredictably.

Endlich haut die finnische Band MORS PRINCIPIUM EST (Facebook) mal wieder ein brandneuen Longplayer raus, nachdem man 2022 mit „Liberate The Unborn Inhumanity“ zunächst einmal eine Auswahl älterer Songs aufpoliert hatte und im kraftvollen neuen Glanze erschienen ließ. Diese Mission hatten sie äußerst erfolgreich abgeschlossen, so dass dieses Album auch in jede Sammlung gehört.

Von der Vergangenheit in die Gegenwart…

Doch nun gibt es 11 brandneue Songs auf dem kommenden Album „Darkness Invisible“. Ich erwarte nichts weniger als High End Musik in extremen Bereichen. Inhaltlich soll es laut Pressetext um folgende Dinge gehen:

Textlich ist das Album durchdrungen von existenzieller Angst, innerem Aufruhr und einem eindringlichen Gefühl der Unbeständigkeit. Themen wie psychologische Isolation, unsichtbares Leid und der langsame Zerfall des eigenen Ichs ziehen sich wie ein roter Faden durch das Album. Dies ist nicht nur Dunkelheit um der Atmosphäre willen – es ist ein persönlicher und philosophischer Abstieg in Gefilde, die in diesem Genre selten mit solcher Intensität erforscht werden. Das Ergebnis ist ein Werk, das sowohl kathartisch als auch niederschmetternd wirkt.

MORS PRINCIPIUM EST stehen für technisch höchst anspruchsvollen Melodic Death Metal, der mit gnadenloser aggressiver Präzision geschmettert wird. Und ich stelle nach den ersten Momenten des Openers „Of Death“ fest, dass sie dieses Prädikatsmerkmal ohne Zweifel beibehalten haben. Die Einleitung wird angenehm kurz gehalten, um dann mit melodischem Riffing den Hörer langsam vorzubereiten.

Was für eine Vehemenz!

Jedoch haute mich dann die ungemeine Vehemenz des musikalischen Sturms doch aus den Latschen. Wow… das hat gesessen! Da hat sich scheinbar bei den Männern ein Menge Energie angesammelt, die sich hier in einem wahren Inferno entlädt. Sie verschaffen es allerdings dem Song Raum zum Atmen, wenn es in den epischen Chorus geht, der sich hier wunderbar einfügt. Der epische Chorus wirkt wie ein Lichtstrahl, der durch die dunklen Wolken bricht. Die Melodien öffnen den Song, lassen ihn wachsen, ohne die Intensität zu verlieren. Man spürt förmlich, wie sich die Komposition ausdehnt, fast filmisch – wie ein Szenenwechsel in einem düsteren Fantasy-Epos. Ein wahrlich cineastisches Erlebnis, was MPE hier zelebrieren.

Auf höchstem Niveau!

Dermaßen geflasht weiß man gar nicht so genau, was man nun noch erwarten soll. Das ist ja gar nicht mehr steigerungsfähig. Und wenn man es nicht mehr steigern kann, dann mach man einfach auf den Niveau weiter. Dementsprechend prügelt man sich weiter in überwältigender Manier durch das Album. MPE haben auf jeden Fall ihre Vorliebe für monumentale Auftritte bei diesem Album voll ausgelebt. Die symphonischen Elemente werden gerne genutzt, allerdings ohne aufgesetzt zu wirken. MPE haben ebenfalls ein Gespür dafür, den Hörer nicht zu überfordern.

Die Band inszeniert sich nicht als bloße Musiker, sondern als Architekten eines Klangtempels. Jeder Song wirkt wie ein Kapitel in einem Epos, jeder Break wie ein Schnitt in einem Film, jeder Chorus wie ein Blick auf das Schlachtfeld. Es ist Musik, die nicht nur gehört, sondern erlebt werden will.

Sind die ersten zwei Songs „Of Death“ und „Venator“ wahre Vernichtungsmaschinen, so kommt „Monuments“ dagegen fast balladesk daher. Trotzdem klingt er massiv und wuchtig, verinnerlicht aber gleichermaßen ein Füllhorn von Melodien. Die Gitarren sind schlichtweg ein Traum und erschaffen zauberhafte Momente, was in einem gigantischen schönen Solo gipfelt. das sich aus dem Chaos erhebt. Ich liebe die ganze Atmosphäre des Songs und es zeigt mir, dass es nicht immer erbarmungsloses Gemetzel geben muss. „Monuments“ ist ein ergreifender Song.

Auch die instrumentalen Zwischenspiele sind wirklich gut gelungen, so dass man sie sich gerne anhört ohne den Wunsch zu verspüren gleich einen Track weiterzuspringen. „Tenebrae Latebra“ ist ein sehr klassisch angehauchtes Stück, bei dem später noch weiblicher Engelsgesang Einzug erhält. Es ist, als würde man durch eine gotische Kathedrale schreiten, in der jede Note ein Lichtstrahl durch buntes Glas ist.

Tatsächlich wünsche ich mir danach aber wieder ne volle aggressive Ladung und werde nicht enttäuscht. „Summoning The Dark“ stößt wieder mit voller Wucht voran und offenbart sogar einige ganz dunkle Growls, die ich nicht erwartet hätte. Die Gitarren sind wieder messerscharf, aber diesmal mit einem Hauch von Disharmonie, der die Unruhe verstärkt. Die Drums treiben gnadenlos voran, und doch bleibt Raum für atmosphärische Zwischentöne.

Keine Schwächen!

MPE manövrieren sich mehr als gekonnt durch die stürmische See des extremen Metal. Oft besteht ja die Gefahr bei extremen Metal, dass man als Hörer vor lauter Monsterwellen und viel Getöse den Überblick verliert und es schwerfällt, einzelne Songs herauszufiltern, weil es an individuellen Akzenten fehlt. Dies ist hier nicht der Fall, da MPE ein eindrucksvolles Songwriting enthüllen.

Magnus Opus

Damit komme ich zu dem Magnus Opus des Albums, welches sich aus der Einleitung „An Aria Of The Damned“ und „All Life Is Evil“ zusammensetzt. Die Einleitung verkörpert einen ähnlichen Flair wie das o.g. „Tenebrae Latebra“. Orchestrale Epik gepaart mit weiblichem Engelsgesang bilden zunächst eine sanfte Schmeichelei, in die man sich fallen lassen kann. Der epische Charakter setzt sich mit „All Life Is Evil“ nahtlos fort. Es ist kein Song, der auf Geschwindigkeit setzt. Trotzdem prägen viele Blastbeats den Song.

Die Drums sind ohnehin genauso beeindruckend wie alles andere und sind nicht nur bloße Begleitung, sondern architektonisches Fundament. Sie formen den Raum, in dem sich die Gitarren und orchestralen Elemente entfalten. Es ist fast, als würde der Song auf den Drums ruhen – und alles andere sich darum herum aufbauen.

In dem dunklen Vermächtnis erklingen auch zeitweise die engelsgleichen Chöre und so wird das Thema aus dem Intro noch einmal aufgenommen. Diese Gesänge sind wie die Sirenen bei den Sagen von Odysseus: Absolut unwiderstehlich! Auch das ausgiebige Gitarrensolo ist mal wieder unglaublich imposant, ein emotionaler Ausbruch, ein letzter Schrei, ein Triumph über die Dunkelheit. Insgesamt ist dieser Song in seiner emotional dichten Wirkung ein außergewöhnliches Highlight und ist ein supergigantisches Finale des Albums gewesen. (Allerdings gibt es beim limitierten Digipack noch einen Bonussong hintendran.)

Fazit

Mit „Darkness Invisible„ haben MORS PRINCIPIUM EST ein Werk erschaffen, das sich mit Fug und Recht als Magnus Opus bezeichnen lässt. Wenn es im extremen Metal so etwas wie Perfektion geben kann, dann ist dieses Album ein ernstzunehmender Kandidat dafür. Das Songwriting ist anspruchsvoll, durchdacht und bis ins Detail ausgearbeitet – nicht bloß auf Zerstörung ausgelegt, sondern getragen von einer beeindruckenden Balance zwischen technischer Präzision und atmosphärischer Tiefe.

Die Band versteht es meisterhaft, brachiale Härte mit cineastischer Epik zu verbinden. Jeder Song besitzt eine eigene Identität, jeder Übergang ist dramaturgisch sinnvoll gesetzt. Besonders hervorzuheben ist die handwerkliche Qualität der Darbietung: Die Gitarrenarbeit ist traumhaft, die Drums donnern mit chirurgischer Wucht, und die orchestralen Elemente fügen sich organisch ins Gesamtbild ein.

„Darkness Invisible„ ist nicht nur ein Album – es ist ein Erlebnis. Ein monumentales Statement, das MORS PRINCIPIUM EST endgültig in die oberste Liga des Genres katapultiert. Ohne Zweifel eines der herausragenden Metal-Alben des Jahres.

Finnish band MORS PRINCIPIUM EST (Facebook) are finally releasing a brand new longplayer after initially polishing up a selection of older songs with „Liberate The Unborn Inhumanity“ in 2022 and releasing them in powerful new splendor. They completed this mission extremely successfully, so this album belongs in every collection.

From the past to the present…

But now there are 11 brand new songs on the upcoming album „Darkness Invisible“. I expect nothing less than high-end music in extreme metal. According to the press release, the content will be about the following things:

Lyrically, the album is steeped in existential angst, inner turmoil and a haunting sense of impermanence. Themes of psychological isolation, invisible suffering and the slow disintegration of the self are a common thread throughout the album. This is not just darkness for atmosphere’s sake – it is a personal and philosophical descent into realms rarely explored with such intensity in this genre. The result is a work that is both cathartic and devastating.

MORS PRINCIPIUM EST stand for technically highly sophisticated melodic death metal that is blasted with mercilessly aggressive precision. And after the first few moments of the opener „Of Death“, I realize that they have undoubtedly retained this characteristic. The introduction is kept pleasantly short and then slowly prepares the listener with melodic riffing.

What a force!

However, the immense vehemence of the musical storm blow me away. Wow… that’s really a full punch! The men seem to have accumulated a lot of energy, which is unleashed here in a veritable inferno. However, they give the song room to breathe when it comes to the epic chorus, which fits in wonderfully here. The epic chorus acts like a ray of light breaking through the dark clouds. The melodies open up the song, allowing it to grow without losing its intensity. You can literally feel how the composition expands, almost cinematically – like a scene change in a dark fantasy epic. A truly cinematic experience that MPE celebrate here.

At the highest level!

So impressed, you don’t really know what else to expect. t seems there’s no more room for improvement. And if you can’t increase it any further, then you just continue at the same level. Accordingly, they continue to thrash their way through the album in an overwhelming manner. MPE have definitely lived out their preference for monumental performances to the full on this album. The symphonic elements are used with pleasure, but without seeming artificial. MPE also have a flair for not overwhelming the listener.

The band do not present themselves as mere musicians, but as architects of a huge sound temple. Every song seems like a chapter in an epic, every break like a cut in a movie, every chorus like a view of the battlefield. It is music that not only wants to be heard, but experienced.

While the first two songs „Of Death“ and „Venator“ are pure destruction, „Monuments“ is almost ballad-like. Nevertheless, it sounds massive and powerful, but also internalizes a cornucopia of melodies. The guitars are simply a dream and create magical moments, culminating in a gigantic, beautiful solo that rises out of the chaos. I love the whole atmosphere of the song and it shows me that there doesn’t always have to be relentless carnage. „Monuments“ is a poignant song.

The instrumental interludes are also really well done, so that you can enjoy listening to them without feeling the need to skip to the next track. „Tenebrae Latebra“ is a track with a very classical feel, which later features female angelic vocals. It’s like walking through a Gothic cathedral where every note is a ray of light through stained glass.

After that, I actually want a full aggressive load again and I’m not disappointed. „Summoning The Dark“ pushes forward again with full force and even reveals some very dark growls that I wouldn’t have expected. The guitars are razor sharp again, but this time with a hint of disharmony that heightens the sense of anxiety. The drums drive forward mercilessly, and yet there is still room for atmospheric nuances.

No weaknesses!

MPE maneuver more than skillfully through the stormy seas of extreme metal. There is often a danger with extreme metal that the listener loses track of what is going on because of all the monster waves and noise, making it difficult to filter out individual songs due to a lack of individual accents. This is not the case here, as MPE reveal impressive songwriting.

Magnus Opus

This brings me to the magnus opus of the album, which consists of the introduction „An Aria Of The Damned“ and „All Life Is Evil“. The introduction embodies a similar flair to the aforementioned „Tenebrae Latebra“. Orchestral epicness paired with female angelic vocals initially form a gentle flattery that you can let yourself fall into. The epic character continues seamlessly with „All Life Is Evil“. It is not a song that relies on speed. Nevertheless, many blast beats characterize the song.

The drums are just as impressive as everything else anyway and are not just mere accompaniment, but an architectural foundation. They form the space in which the guitars and orchestral elements unfold. It’s almost as if the song rests on the drums – and everything else is built around them.

In the dark legacy, the angelic choirs also sound at times and the theme from the intro is taken up again. These songs are like the sirens in the legends of Odysseus: absolutely irresistible! The extensive guitar solo is once again incredibly impressive, an emotional outburst, a final cry, a triumph over the darkness. All in all, this song is an extraordinary highlight in its emotionally dense effect and was a super-gigantic finale to the album. (However, the limited digipack also includes a bonus song.)

Conclusion

With „Darkness Invisible“, MORS PRINCIPIUM EST have created an album that can justifiably be described as a magnus opus. If there can be such a thing as perfection in extreme metal, then this album is a serious candidate for it. The songwriting is sophisticated, well thought out and elaborated down to the last detail – not just designed for destruction, but carried by an impressive balance between technical precision and atmospheric depth.

The band are masters at combining brute force with cinematic epicness. Each song has its own identity, every transition is dramaturgically well-placed. The technical quality of the performance deserves special mention: the guitar work is fantastic, the drums thunder with surgical force and the orchestral elements fit organically into the overall picture.

„Darkness Invisible“ is not just an album – it’s an experience. A monumental statement that finally catapults MORS PRINCIPIUM EST into the top league of the genre. Without a doubt one of the outstanding metal albums of the year.

Es ist der zweite Longplayer der schwedischen Band VITTRA (Facebook), nachdem sie „Blasphemy Blues“ 2022 (Review) herausgebracht haben. Es ist eine etwas verrückte Band, was die damalige Single „Necrotic Apocalypse“ schon deutlich machte, welches auf der ersten EP „Wardens“ verewigt wurde.

Mir gefiel bisher der frische Sound und die großartige Dynamik im Sound von VITTRA. Außerdem hinterließ die leicht verrückte Ader einen guten Eindruck, die sich manchmal in herausragenden Songs manifestierte, weil sie einfach anders klingen. Und während ich mir die neuen Songs so auf die Ohren knalle, muss ich feststellen, dass sie ihre frische Energie nicht verloren haben und sogar noch verrückter geworden sind. Wer sich das Cover-Artwork genauer ansieht, wird inmitten des zerborstenen Kopf der Statue das dämonische Wesen entdecken, welches das letzte Cover-Artwork zierte.

Aber fangen wir von vorne an. Es beginnt relativ klassisch mit dem treibenden Song „MOFO“, der eine unheimlich starke Dynamik ausstrahlt. Der Song hat verdammt viel zu bieten. Das fängt bei kleineren aufregenden Tempowechsel an, die den Song aufputschen. Doch VITTRA feuern noch einige andere Überraschungen ab, so z.B. das coole kleine Drumsolo ab Minute 01:49. So was hört man allgemein viel zu wenig im unserer Musikwelt, finde ich. So hätten VITTRA dies ruhig noch einige Sekunden länger knallen lassen dürfen.

Darüber hinaus ist auch das Gitarrenspiel mit seinen Riffs und Leads ist wieder phänomenal. „MOFO“ ist ein perfekter Einstieg in das Album und ich habe diesen geilen Song direkt mehrmals gehört bevor die Hörsession weiterging. Von dem Song gibt es kein Video, aber vom Song „The Leap“, der für mich in eine ähnliche Richtung geht.

„Reign Supreme“ legt ebenfalls einen furiosen Auftritt hin, hat aber eine etwas leichtere Ausstrahlung mit rockigen Einschlägen, was besonders im Mittelteil deutlich wird, wo mir auch der melodische Bass besonders gut gefällt plus dem fetzigen Gitarrensolo. Melodische Aggressivität gepaart mit verrückter Energie ist eine gute Beschreibung für das gesamte Album. Auf hohem technischen Niveau wird der Hörer auseinandergenommen.

Pausen zu Erholung sind Fehlanzeige. Hier geht es Schlag auf Schlag und manchmal kann man sich einen Staunen oder ein Schmunzeln nicht verkneifen. Spätestens beim Song „Transylvanian Buffet“ wird das passieren und man wird auch diesen Song gleich noch einmal oder mehrmals hören, weil man hier Dinge hört, mit denen man sicherlich nicht rechnet. Und das macht die Spannung aus, wenn man VITTRA hört. Man muss auf alles gefasst sein. „Transylvanian Buffet“ ist ein Song, der schlichtweg Spaß macht.

Es könnte sogar eine Art Partysong mit Moshpitgarantie sein. Allein dieses Westernpiano ist einfach so genial, aber als ob das nicht reichen würde, fliegt die Saloontür auf und ein ganzer Westernpart kommt reingeflogen und mischt die Party auf. Das Ganze ist aber so genial miteinander verwoben, dass es der ruchlosen Härte keinen Abbruch beschert, sondern nur den Unterhaltungswert steigert.

„Soul Searcher“ hat zwar eine harte Schale wie eine Auster, aber plötzlich öffnet sie sich und man darf sich an einer wunderbaren musikalischen Perle erfreuen, bevor die Auster wieder brutal zuschnappt. Denn ab Minute 01:23 folgt eine harter Break und man darf sich an einem schönen akustischen Gitarrensolo erfreuen, welches dann noch in ein kurzes intensives elektrisches Gitarrensolo übergeht. Cool gemacht!

VITTRA hauen mit „Bound By Blood“ einen mächtigen und gleichzeitig dynamischen Midtempo-Kracher raus, der tatsächlich mal mit einem massiven cleanen Band-Chorus auftritt, was auf jeden Fall eine Ausnahme bei VITTRA darstellt. Es zeigt wiederum, dass VITTRA vielseitig aufgestellt sind und gerne mal experimentieren. Das eröffnet ihnen unheimlich viele Möglichkeiten.

Zum Ende des Albums hin geben VITTRA mit den letzten drei Songs noch mal Vollgas und brennen ein wahres Feuerwerk ab und es verstecken sich immer wieder kleine, aber feine Ideen, die es entdecken gibt. So z.B. ein schickes Basssolo ab Minute 01:40 beim Song „Hate“, an welchem sich ein wildes rockiges Gitarrensolo anschließt. Mit dem mächtigen Cover vom 1986’er Slayer Klassiker „Piece By Piece“ durchqueren VITTRA die Ziellinie wie ein rasender Büffel und lässt den Hörer völlig zerstört zurück.

Fazit

Ich kann auf „Intense Indifference“ Review keine Schwachstelle finden. VITTRA haben nochmals zugelegt und liefern eine furiose Vorstellung, die zu keinem Zeitpunkt irgendeine Art von Schwäche zeigt. Hier geht es Schlag auf Schlag mit knallharten Songs, die kurz und knackig brutal austeilen und gnadenlos mitreißen. Darüber hinaus sorgen VITTRA mit kleinen ungewöhnlichen Einlagen und technischen Feinheiten für das gewisse Etwas, das sie aus der Masse hervorstechen lässt. Es ist eine völlig ausgereifte Vorstellung mit perfektem kurzweiligen Unterhaltungswert. Und sicherlich werden VITTRA uns zukünftig weiter überraschen und mit extrem starken Song versorgen. Ich vergebe aber jetzt bereits 10 Punkte für dieses Album.

Ich würde mich wahnsinnig freuen, diese Band einmal live zu erleben. Sie würden hervorragend als Support zu etlichen Bands passen oder auch ein Festival ungemein bereichern. Also falls jemand nach einer ausgefallenen positiv verrückten Band mit viel Energie sucht, der ist mit VITTRA bestens bedient. Sie würden sich liebend gerne mal auf die Reise begeben und ihre Musik dem Rest der Welt präsentieren.

This is the second longplayer from Swedish band VITTRA (Facebook), following the release of „Blasphemy Blues“ in 2022 (Review). It’s a somewhat crazy band, which was already made clear by the single „Necrotic Apocalypse“, which was immortalized on the first EP „Wardens“.

So far, I’ve liked the fresh sound and the great dynamics in VITTRA’s sound. In addition, the slightly crazy vein left a good impression, which sometimes manifested itself in outstanding songs because they really sound different. And as I listen to the new songs, I can’t help but notice that they haven’t lost their fresh energy and have become even crazier. If you take a closer look at the cover artwork, you will discover the demonic creature that adorned the last cover artwork in the middle of the broken head of the statue.

But let’s start from the beginning. It starts relatively classically with the driving song „MOFO“, which radiates an incredibly strong dynamic. The hellish song has a lot to offer. It starts with small, exciting tempo changes that spice up the song. But VITTRA also fire off a few other surprises, such as the cool little drum solo from minute 01:49. I think, VITTRA could have extended this a little more.

In addition, the guitar playing with its riffs and leads is once again phenomenal. „MOFO“ is a perfect introduction to the album and I listened to this great song several times before the listening session continued. There is no video of this song, but there is one of the song „The Leap“, which for me goes in a similar direction.

„Reign Supreme“ also puts in a furious performance, but has a somewhat lighter vibe with rock influences, which is particularly evident in the middle section, where I particularly like the melodic bass plus the groovy guitar solo. Melodic aggression paired with crazy vibes is a good description for the whole album. The listener is taken apart at a high technical level.

There are no breaks to relax. It’s all in rapid succession and sometimes you can’t help but be amazed or smile. This will happen at the latest with the song „Transylvanian Buffet“ and you will listen to this song again or several times, because you will hear things here that you certainly didn’t expect. And that’s what makes listening to VITTRA so exciting. You have to be prepared for anything. „Transylvanian Buffet“ is a song that is simply fun.

It could even be a kind of party song with a mosh pit guarantee. The western piano alone is just so ingenious, but as if that wasn’t enough, the saloon door flies open and a whole western part comes flying in and mixes up the party. However, the whole thing is so ingeniously interwoven that it doesn’t detract from the nefarious harshness, but only increases the entertainment value.

„Soul Searcher“ has a hard shell like an oyster, but suddenly it opens up and you can enjoy a wonderful musical pearl before the oyster snaps brutally shut again. Because from minute 01:23 there is a hard break and you can enjoy a beautiful acoustic guitar solo, which then turns into a short, intense electric guitar solo. Cool job!

With „Bound By Blood“, VITTRA deliver a powerful and at the same time dynamic midtempo cracker that actually features a massive clean band chorus, which is definitely an exception for VITTRA. It shows again that VITTRA are versatile and like to experiment. This opens up an incredible amount of possibilities for them.

Towards the end of the album, VITTRA go full throttle again with the last three songs and burn off a real firework display, and there are always small but fine ideas to discover. For example, a chic bass solo from minute 01:40 onwards in the song „Hate“, which is followed by a wild rocking guitar solo.With the mighty cover of the 1986 Slayer classic „Piece By Piece“, VITTRA cross the finish line like a raging buffalo and leave the listener completely devastated.

Conclusion

I can’t find a weak point on „Intense Indifference“ Review. VITTRA have stepped up their game once again and deliver a furious performance that never shows any kind of weakness. Here, it’s one hit after another with hard-hitting songs that are short and crisp, brutal and mercilessly captivating. In addition, VITTRA provide that certain something that makes them stand out from the crowd with little unusual interludes and technical subtleties. It is a completely mature performance with perfect entertainment value. And VITTRA will certainly continue to surprise us in the future and provide us with extremely strong songs. But I’m already awarding 10 points for this album.

I would be incredibly happy to see this band live. They would be an excellent support act for a number of bands or would enrich a festival immensely. So if anyone is looking for an offbeat, positively crazy band with a lot of energy, VITTRA is the band for you. They would love to go on the road and present their music to the rest of the world.

NEPHYLIM (Facebook) haben 2020 ihr Debüt „Severance Of Serenity“ herausgebracht und nun erscheint das neue Werk „Circuition“. Mir ist sofort das sehr schön gestaltete Cover des Albums aufgefallen. Im Zentrum des Bildes sieht man schemenhaft einen Fötus, der an einer Nabelschnur hängt, wobei die Nabelschnur aus einer hölzernen bzw. pflanzlichen Verflechtung besteht. Es macht für mich den Eindruck, dass es sich sinnbildlich um die Gebärmutter der Natur handelt, in der wir Menschen mit allem versorgt werden und von der wir abhängig sind. Daher sagt man ja auch gerne: Mutter Natur.

Zum konzeptionellen Inhalt des Albums sagt die Band folgendes:

Wie das Debütalbum ist auch „Circuition“ ein Konzeptalbum, das die Abläufe des Lebenszyklus und des Schicksalsrads erforscht. Jeder Song auf dem Album ist mit einer Bedeutung oder einem Zustand des Seins verbunden, wie z.B. dem Ursprung des Lebens: der Geburt, den Folgen des Alters oder jedermanns Wahrnehmung des Kreislaufs des Lebens.

Homogenes Konzept

Das Album wird sehr ruhig und melodisch eingeleitet und im sphärischen Intro „Travail Pt. I – Anima„ mischen sich dezente fernöstliche Klänge ein. Das ganze erstreckt sich über zwei Minuten und dann findet ein fließender Übergang in den ersten Song „Travail Pt. II – Animus„ statt. Zu Beginn setzt sich ein leichte melodische Ader fort, doch dann geht’s ans Eingemachte. Die Riffs werden härter, die Drums massiver und dazu gesellen sich die finsteren Growls. Fürwahr verliert man die Melodien nie aus den Augen. Der Sound hat eine grundsolide Basis und die Komponenten greifen harmonisch ineinander, was zu einem tollen Hörerlebnis führt. Durch einige Features, z.B. durch Einsatz von Synthies, gelingt NEPHYLIM eine ansprechende Atmosphäre zu erschaffen. Dies wird auch beim Schlusstrack „Inner Paradigm“ deutlich.

Beim Song „Amaranth“hört man zur Einführung einen längeren einführender Instrumentalpart, wo sich zunächst Drums und Bass hervortun, um eine bedächtige Stimmung hervorzurufen, die auch erst einmal bestehen bleibt, wenn sich die E-Gitarre einmischt. Jedoch folgt eine langsame Steigerung der Intensität und es kommt zu martialischen Ausbrüchen. Bei „Grand Denial“ wird es wieder stürmischer, aber grundsätzlich rudert man im gleichen Fahrwasser. Der massive Ausbruch nach dem Synthiepart weiß zu gefallen und bringt noch mal einen Kick in den Song.

Ein anderes bzw. zusätzliches Feature bekommt man dann beim Titeltrack „Circuition“. Man arbeitet hier mit cleanen Vocals als Kontrast zu den Growls. So entfaltet sich ein epischer Track mit einem gehaltvollen Package an schönen Melodien und auch melancholischen Passagen, die mit einer gefühlvollen Attitüde für Besinnlichkeit verantwortlich sind. NEPHYLIM vermögen es durchaus den Hörer zu fesseln. Auch auf „Withered“ lässt man cleane Vocals einfließen, aber der Song ist trotzdem aggressiver als „Circuation“ und das Finale ist wirklich stark.

Fazit

Das Album „Circuition“ von NEPHYLIM ist ein rundum gelungenes Werk, dass ein durchweg tolles Hörerlebnis bietet. Es gelingt ihnen eine ansprechende reizvolle Atmosphäre zu generieren. Insgesamt sind die Songs homogen gestaltet, wobei ich mir durchaus noch progressivere Songstrukturen oder spezielle Elemente hätte vorstellen können, die den einen oder anderen Überraschungseffekt bedeuten würden, um den einzelnen Songs noch mehr Individualität zu verschaffen. Ich erinnere mich da beispielsweise an das Intro, wo man einen Hauch fernöstlicher Vibes hat einfließen lassen. (8 von 10 Punkten)

In the middle of the picture, you can see a shadowy fetus hanging from an umbilical cord, which consisting of a wood or plant weave. It gives me the impression that it is symbolically the womb of nature, in which we humans are provided with everything and on which we are dependent. That’s why people like to say: Mother Nature.

The band has the following to say about the conceptual content of the album:

Like the debut album, „Circuition“ is also a concept album that explores the processes of the life cycle and the wheel of fate. Each song on the album is linked to a meaning or state of being, such as the origin of life: birth, the consequences of old age or everyone’s perception of the cycle of life.

Homogeneous concept

The album opens very calmly and melodically and the spherical intro „Travail Pt. I – Anima“ is interspersed with subtle Far Eastern sounds. The whole thing lasts for two minutes and then there is a smooth transition into the first song „Travail Pt. II – Animus“. At the beginning, a slight melodic vein continues, but then it gets down to business. The riffs become heavier, the drums more massive and the dark growls join in. The melodies are never lost sight of. The sound has a strong-solid basis and the components interlock harmoniously, resulting in a great listening experience. NEPHYLIM manage to create an appealing atmosphere through a few features, e.g. the use of synths. This is also evident in the final track „Inner Paradigm“.

The song „Amaranth“ is introduced by a long introductory instrumental part, where drums and bass initially come to the fore to create a deliberate mood, which remains for the time being when the electric guitar joins in. However, this is followed by a slow increase in intensity and martial outbursts. Things get stormier again on „Grand Denial“, but the band is basically rowing in the same waters. The strong outburst after the synth part gives the song another kick.

The title track „Circuition“ offers a different or additional feature. Clean vocals are used here as a contrast to the growls. The result is an epic track with a rich package of beautiful melodies and melancholy passages, which are responsible for a soulful attitude of contemplation. NEPHYLIM are definitely able to captivate the listener. Clean vocals are also used on „Withered“, but the song is still more aggressive than „Circuition“ and the finale is really strong.

Conclusion

The album „Circuition“ by NEPHYLIM is an all-round successful work that offers a consistently great listening experience. They succeed in generating an appealing and attractive atmosphere. Overall, the songs are homogeneous, although I could have imagined even more progressive song structures or special elements that would have give the individual songs even more individuality. I remember the intro, for example, where a touch of Far Eastern vibes was incorporated. (8 out of 10 points)

Die Finnen VOIDFALLEN (Facebook) sind mit ihrem zweite Album „The Rituals of Resilience“ am Start. Ursprünglich als Zwei-Mann-Projekt im Jahr 2019 von den Gitarristen Tommi Kangaskortet und Henri Vuorenmaa gegründet, wurde das Line Up mit schießlich weiteren Musikern komplettiert, um auch für Live-Auftritte gewappnet zu sein. Ihr Debütalbum „The Atlas of Spiritual Apocalypse“ erschien 2021 und nun ist man bereit für den nächsten Angriff auf die Death Metal Szene. Und der fällt heftig aus!

Hochwertig

Das Debüt wandelte schon auf sehr harten Pfaden und diesen Pfad hat man auch mit dem neuen Album beschritten. Da sich das Debüt technisch bereits auf einem beeindruckend hohen Level abgespielt hat, kann man sich bei dem neuen Album ebenfalls auf eine großartige Show freuen. Es dauert auch nicht lange, bis beim Opener „Threads of Blood“ die Fetzen fliegen. Der kraftvolle vor Melodien strotzende Sound türmt sich zu monumentaler Größe auf. VOIDFALLEN setzen weiter auf atmosphärische Synthie-Untermalung, die auch mit orchestralen Elementen arbeitet, wie es z.B. bei „Hymn For The Fallen“ deutlich zum Ausruck kommt. Dadurch entstehen durchaus interessante und ansprechende Klanglandschaften.

VOIDFALLEN verschaffen ihren Songs durchweg einen gewaltigen Auftritt und scheuen sich auch nicht in extreme Bereiche zu steuern. „Starved of Martyrs“ beispielsweise gerät zum Ende in einen unglaublichen Geschwindigkeitsrausch.

Extreme Ausbrüche

werden euch häufiger auf dem Album begegnen. „The Original Wound“ ist z.B. eine brachiale Zerstörungsorgie epischen Ausmaßes, was durch orchestrale Elemente verstärkt wird. Es ist ein unheimlich dynamischer abwechslungsreicher Song, der mit einer starken atmosphärischen Dichte punktet. Ich bin beeindruckt! Und damit sind wir bei einem großen Pluspunkt von VOIDFALLEN. Sie gehen zwar unheimlich aggressiv vor, erschaffen aber in ihren Attacken immer wieder erhabene Mo(nu)mente, um ein großartiges Ambiente zu erzeugen. Das gründet auf einem hohen technischen Level, den die Musiker hier in allen Bereichen demonstrieren. Viel Dynamik und Raffinesse prägen den Sound.

Überrascht hat man mich dann noch beim letzten Song „The Mourning Shores“, wo ich unerwartet cleane Vocals zu hören bekam, die den Song einleiten. Davon war die ganze Zeit vorher nichts zu hören. Der Song beinhaltet auch gesprochene Vocalparts. Mir gefällt die Struktur des Songs mit seinen verschiedenen besonderen Akzenten. Er hebt sich in einer Reihe von Songs ab, die alle durchweg qualitativ hochwertig sind. Ich mir mehr solcher außergewöhnlicher Ideen auch auf dem Album vorstellen können.

Fazit

VOIDFALLEN liefern mit „The Rituals of Resilience“ einen würdigen Nachfolger des starken Debütalbums. Konzeptionell bleibt man sich treu und demonstriert mit 10 Songs monumentalen melodischen Death-Metal, der heftig einschlägt und einen starken Eindruck hinterlässt. Der Sound ist noch gewaltiger worden und es gibt auch extreme Ausbrüche, die sich in verschiedenen Formen manifestieren. Dadurch kristallisiert sich ein dynamischer Sound heraus, der mit viel Raffinesse präsentiert wird.

The Finns VOIDFALLEN (Facebook) are back with their second album „The Rituals of Resilience“. Originally founded as a two-man project in 2019 by guitarists Tommi Kangaskortet and Henri Vuorenmaa, the line-up was completed with additional musicians in order to be prepared for live performances. Their debut album „The Atlas of Spiritual Apocalypse“ was released in 2021 and now they are ready for the next assault on the death metal scene. And it’s going to be fierce!

High quality

The debut was already on a very hard path and this path has also been followed with the new album. As the debut was already on an impressively high technical level, you can also look forward to a great show with the new album. It doesn’t take long and the sound immediately cranks up with the opener „Threads of Blood“. The powerful sound, bursting with melodies, builds up to monumental proportions. VOIDFALLEN continue to rely on atmospheric synth background music, which also works with orchestral elements, as is clearly expressed in „Hymn For The Fallen“, for example. This results in interesting and appealing soundscapes.

VOIDFALLEN give their songs a powerful performance throughout and are not afraid to go to extremes. „Starved of Martyrs“, for example, gets into an incredible frenzy of speed towards the end.

Extreme outbreaks

you will encounter more frequently on the album. „The Original Wound“, for example, is a brute orgy of destruction on an epic scale, which is reinforced by orchestral elements. It is an incredibly dynamic and varied song that scores with a strong atmospheric density. I am impressed! And that brings us to a big plus point for VOIDFALLEN. Although they are incredibly aggressive, they always create sublime mo(nu)ments in their attacks to create a great ambience. This is based on a high technical level, which the musicians demonstrate here in all areas. The sound is characterized by a lot of dynamics and sophistication.

I was surprised by the last song „The Mourning Shores“, where I unexpectedly heard clean vocals introducing the song. I hadn’t heard any of that before. The song also contains spoken vocal parts. I like the structure of the song with its various special accents. It stands out in a line of songs that are all consistently high quality. I could imagine more of these unusual ideas on the album.

Conclusion

With „The Rituals of Resilience“, VOIDFALLEN deliver a worthy follow-up to their strong debut album. Conceptually, the band remains true to itself and demonstrates monumental melodic death metal with 10 songs, which hits hard and leaves a strong impression. The sound has become even more powerful and there are also extreme outbursts that manifest themselves in various forms. This crystallizes a dynamic sound that is presented with great finesse.

SMORRAH „Welcome To Your Nightmare“

SMORRAH aus Gelsenkirchen lassen mit ihrem Debüt „Welcome To Your Nightmare“ ein böses Ungeheuer auferstehen, welches euch mit neun krassen Albträumen heimsucht. Gnadenlos gute und gleichzeitig bitterböse Unterhaltung mit hemmungslosen Angriffen, die euch alles abverlangen werden.SMORRAH verarbeiten Wut in ihren aggressiven Songs und das spürt man auch deutlich beim unerbittlichen Sound. SMORRAH schaffen es dabei nicht immer in den gleichen Stiefeln zu rocken. Natürlich wird hier nirgends in Balletschläppchen getanzt, aber die Songs werden eben nicht einfach nur stumpf durchgetrampelt oder durchgeprügelt. Die Songs haben insgesamt ein stimmiges Soundkonzept aus einem stählernen Guß, tragen aber ihre individuelle Rüstung und sorgen mit ihren musikalischen Waffen für unterschiedliche Angriffe. (review)

ANDY GILLION „Exilium“ 

ANDY GILLION geht auf seinen Soloreisen mit dem Album „Exilium“ neue Wege und gibt auf diesem Album sein Debüt als Sänger. Und auch dafür hat der vielseitig begabte Musiker Talent und zeigt eine enorme wütende Inbrunst, die dazu führt, dass man auf „Exilium“ von gnadenlos harten Attacken überrannt wird. Die technische Umsetzung ist überaus beeindruckend und die musikalischen Attacken werden auf hohem Niveau geführt.

Der Sound bewegt sich in rauen Gewässern und die Songs fegen gnadenlos stürmisch über alles hinweg. Andy bindet auch mal symphonische Elemente ein, hält sich dabei aber zurück, denn der Fokus richtet sich dabei natürlich auf das famose Gitarrenspiel, über dessen fantastische Qualität kein Zweifel besteht und unglaublich beeindruckend ist. Zudem schmettert Andy seine Vocals ansprechend raus und die Growls klingen gut, haben Power und Aggression. Als imponierendes Beispiel sei der Song „Call To Arms“ genannt. Dieser ist eine brutale Vernichtungsmaschine, in der alle Stärken vehement und eindrucksvoll herausgestellt werden. Als Ausnahmesong auf dem Album kann man eindeutig „As The Kingdom Burns“ anführen. Dieser bietet andere Impressionen. Denn hier hat Andy als gesangliche Verstärkung Brittney Slayes von der Band ‚Unleash The Archers‘ eingeladen. Der Song sticht damit eklatant im Gesamtkonzept des Albums hervor und schenkt dem Sound eine erfrischende Komponente. (review)

THIS ENDING „Crowned In Blood“

THIS ENDING haben mit „Crowned In Blood“ noch mal einen Gang höher geschaltet und erschaffen mit gewaltigen Songs eine Atmosphäre, die in ihrer Unerbittlichkeit noch zusätzlich durch den stringenten Einsatz der melodischen Riffs einen epischen Faktor ausstrahlt. Das Album ist knallhart, was die ersten Songs auch unmissverständlich klarstellen, aber die Band sorgt mit einem guten Songwriting dafür, dass es nicht nur zu einer stumpfen Prügelorgie wird. Und es gibt sogar Songs, die im Gesamtkonzept überraschen.

„Will Of Iron“ ist dabei sehr interessant und zeigt eine andere Facette. Der Song kommt mit einem schönen Chorus daher und bringt ein wenig heroisches Power-Metal-Feeling in den ansonsten knallharten Banger. Eine kleine Überraschung stellt auch „Hope In Inferno“ dar. Man greift das gern genutzte Thema der akustischen Gitarre erneut auf, doch diesmal kommt es anders als man erwarten würde. Denn die cleanen Gitarrenklänge bleiben dem Song erhalten und werden später mit dem harten Riffing kombiniert. Der Song hält sich tatsächlich erst einmal zurück. Und auch wenn er im Verlauf robuster wird, so behält er doch seinen balladesken Charakter. Mir gefällt die Entwicklung innerhalb des Songs und die Komposition bzw. Kombination der Elemente sehr, denn dieser Song setzt so mal einen anderen Akzent, fügt sich aber wunderbar ins Gesamtkonzept ein. (review)

OAK, ASH & THORN „Our Grief Is Thus“

OAK, ASH & THORN (Facebook) aus Denver in den U.S.A. gehören definitiv zu den verheißungsvollen Bands, die Lust auf mehr machen. Der melodische Death Metal wird hier wieder einmal sehr einfallsreich interpretiert und wunderbar dargeboten. Auch kann ich eine progressive Herangehensweise nicht ganz verneinen, denn die musikalischen Einflüsse gestalten sich vielfältig. Die sagenhafte Cierra White präsentiert hier durchweg hohe Kunstfertigkeit an den Drums. Es wirkt so lebendig und dynamisch wie ich es kaum woanders höre. Viele fordernde Rhythmuswechsel, die wie selbstverständlich ineinander übergehen ohne das der musikalische Fluß verloren geht. Gnadenlos ratternde Blastbeats gehören ebenfalls zum Repertoire. 

Sänger Adam begeistert mit einer breiten Palette seiner gesanglichen Fähigkeiten. Der Einsatz kraftvoller melodischer Vocals ist wirklich sehr gelungen und sind genauso eindrucksvoll wie die extremen Vocals. OAK, ASH & THORN legen mit „Our Grief Is Thus“ ein fantastisches Album vor, dass zerstörerischen melodischen Death Metal mit äußerst kraftvollem Power Metal vereint und zwischendurch noch eine Prise Black Metal einstreut. Alles wird auf technisch höchstem Niveau äußerst dynamisch umgesetzt, wobei finstere Abgründe, hemmungslose Attacken und epische Ausflüge höchst ansprechende und ereignisreiche Geschichten erzählen. ACT OF CREATION „Moments To Remain“

ACT OF CREATION (Facebook) lassen sicherlich niemanden unbeeindruckt, denn die Songs bieten verdammt viele geile Momente. ACT OF CREATION stürmen mit einer gewaltigen Wucht gnadenlos voran ohne sich dabei nur in einfach strukturierte vorhersehbare Angriffe zu verrennen. Vielmehr gelingt es ihnen durch geschicktes durchdachtes Songwriting den Spannungsbogen und den Unterhaltungswert sehr hoch zu halten. Die technische Präsentation ist phänomenal und die kraftvolle Produktion steht dem Ganzen in nichts nach. Ein absoluter Pflichtkauf! (review)

Leider gibt es die Band nicht mehr, da sie im Dezember ihre Auflösung bekanntgegeben hat. Sehr schade, aber ich denke, dass die Musiker sicherlich irgendwo wieder von sich hören lassen werden.

WOLFHEART „Draconian Darkness“

WOLFHEART (Homepage, Facebook) haben meiner Meinung nach noch kein schlechtes oder durchschnittliches Album abgeliefert. Ihre Entwicklung gipfelte für mich im Album „King Of The North“. Mir schien es, als ob WOLFHEART damit ihren Sound perfektioniert hatten, wenn man dieses Wort überhaupt so wählen sollte. Der Sound hatte eine monumentale Größe erreicht, wobei aggressive dunkle nordische Härte sich mit epischen Eskapaden paarte.

„Draconian Darkenss“ führt diese Reise fort und wer das letzte Album mochte, der wird sich auch auf der neuen Reise umgehend wohlfühlen. Das Niveau der Songs ist auf dem gleichen Level angesiedelt. Beim Opener „Ancient Cold“ zeigt sich bereits während der Einleitungsphase besonders deutlich, dass WOLFHEART mittlerweile gerne mit imposanten orchestralen Elementen arbeiten, die dem Ganzen eine gigantische erhabene Ausstrahlung verleihen. Doch sie verlassen sich nicht darauf. Beispeilswweise verzichtet man bei „Evenfall“ auf symphonische pompöse Ausflüge und marschiert eher geradlinig voran und gibt sich „old school“. Allerdings sorgt eine kleine akustische folkloristisch angehauchte Einlage für einen originellen Touch. „Draconian Darkness“ ist wieder ein durchgängig exzellentes Album, weswegen ich keinen Grund sehe einen Punkt abzuziehen. DARK TRANQUILLITY „Endtime Signals“

DARK TRANQUILLITY sind schon seit Ewigkeiten eine beständige Größe in der Szene und haben großartige Alben in ihrer Karriere veröffentlicht. Das letzte Album „Moment“ liegt nun vier Jahre zurück und jetzt haben sie dieses Jahr mit dem 13. Album „Endtime Signals“ wieder einmal für Begeisterung gesorgt. Ich kann diese Begeisterung teilen, denn DARK TRANQUILLITY stehen für eine wunderbare Symbiose zwischen rigoroser Härte und emotionalen Momenten. Ich habe den Gesang von Mikael Stanne schon immer sehr geschätzt. Seine Growls sind exzellent, denn er schafft das Kunststück in diesem extremen Bereich noch so klar und deutlich zu klingen, dass man alles verstehen kann. Auf der anderen Seite klingt seine cleane Stimme phänomenal und verkörpert Emotionen pur. Zugleich legen sie großen Wert auf eine atmosphärische Dichte in den Songs, die durch den intelligenten Einsatz von Keys mit geprägt wird. All diese Zutaten haben DARK TRANQILLITY wieder einmal hervorragend in 12 Songs verpackt. Eigentlich kann man deren Alben immer blind kaufen.

Auch unser Redakteur Matt ist hin und weg von dem Album und hat folgende Worte für das Album übrig (review):

Das Album mit gut 50 Minuten Spielzeit ist ein richtig starkes Lebenszeichen aus Göteborg: Auf „Endtime Signals“ zeigen Dark Tranquillity, dass sie noch immer zu den Größten in Sachen Melodic Death Metal gehören…..Die wiedererstarkte Besetzung, verstärkt durch Joakim Strandberg Nilsson (Schlagzeug) und Christian Jansson (Bass), verleiht Dark Tranquillity eine frische Energie…. Der Song „Unforgivable“ dürfte die Fans ziemlich überraschen, denn so hart und vor allem rasend schnell war die Band lange nicht mehr….Das Album hält konsequent einen sehr hohen, kompositorischen Standard…Das Album ist uneingeschränkt großartig, absolut hörenswert!

NIGHT IN GALES „Shadowreaper“

Dieses Album wurde von meinem Redaktionskollegen Moldi begutachtet und ich stimme mit seinem Fazit überein. Daher mache ich es mir jetzt einfach und zitiere sein Resümè. (review)

Kaum eine aktive Band zelebriert den klassischen schwedischen Melodic Death Metal so, wie Night in Gales. Kein Intro, kein Outro, kein Gefrickel, keine Lückenfüller, sondern 90er Jahre pur. Der leicht veränderte Sound, der jeden Puristen erfreuen wird, tut sein übriges. Die Songs sind gut strukturiert und bieten immer wieder viel Abwechslung. Sogar der Klargesang in den wenigen Passagen stört nicht. Jens Basten hat einfach mehr Melodien im kleinen Finger, als andere auf ein ganzes Album packen(können). Je öfter die Scheibe dreht, desto besser wird sie. Genreliebhaber können und sollten hier blind zuschlagen!

DISPARAGED „Down The Heavens“

DISPARAGED aus der Schweiz haben eine elfjährige Pause hinter sich, melden sich aber mit einem Riesenknall zurück. Auch wenn DISPARAGED den Death Metal melodisch inszenieren, so wird beim Gesang harte Kante gezeigt. Der Sound ist insgesamt brutal und beim ersten Hören ist mir direkt das furiose Drumming sehr positiv aufgefallen. Drummer Heinz entfacht hier eine atemberaubende Show und liefert neben krassen Blastbeats-Attacken auch in den temporeduzierten Phasen eine unglaubliche Lebendigkeit und Dynamik. Diese Dynamik wird von den Mitstreitern aufgenommen und noch weiter verfeinert bzw. intensiviert. Die Gitarren sägen sich mit ihren Riffs brutal durch die Songs, während die Leadgitarre ganz vorzügliche Arbeit leistet und mit unglaublichen Solos angreift.

DISPARAGED haben mit „Down The Heavens“ ein Death-Metal-Monument erschaffen, noch dazu mit einer sehr üppigen Spielzeit von über 60 Minuten. Die Songs wirken aus einem Guss, zeigen aber immer wieder durch hervorragendes Songwriting andere Facetten, so dass sie eine dichte faszinierende Atmosphäre erzeugen. Es ist durchweg ein echter Genuss dieser exzellenten Show zuzuhören. Am Ende ist man sprachlos und überwältigt! Was für ein grandioses Comeback! (review)

SMORRAH „Welcome To Your Nightmare“

With their debut album „Welcome To Your Nightmare“, SMORRAH from Gelsenkirchen bring to life an evil monster that will haunt you with nine blatant nightmares. Mercilessly good and at the same time bitterly evil entertainment with unrestrained attacks that will demand everything from you.SMORRAH process anger in their aggressive songs and you can clearly feel this in their relentless sound. SMORRAH don’t always manage to rock in the same boots. Of course, there’s no dancing in ballet slippers here, but the songs aren’t just bluntly stomped or beaten through. Overall, the songs have a coherent sound concept, but wear their individual armor and provide different attacks with their musical weapons. (review)

ANDY GILLION „Exilium“ 

ANDY GILLION breaks new ground on his solo tours with the album „Exilium“ and makes his debut as a singer on this album. And the multi-talented musician also has talent for this, displaying an enormous, furious fervor that leads to „Exilium“ being overrun by mercilessly hard attacks. The technical realization is extremely impressive and the musical attacks are carried out at a high level.

The sound moves in rough waters and the songs sweep mercilessly and stormily over everything. Andy also incorporates symphonic elements from time to time, but holds back, because the focus is naturally on the fantastic guitar playing, the fantastic quality of which is beyond doubt and incredibly impressive. Andy also belts out his vocals in an appealing manner and the growls sound good, have power and aggression. An impressive example is the song „Call To Arms“. This is a brutal destruction machine in which all the strengths are vehemently and impressively emphasized. „As The Kingdom Burns“ is clearly the exceptional song on the album. It offers other impressions. Andy has invited Brittney Slayes from the band ‚Unleash The Archers‘ to join him on vocals. The song stands out strikingly in the overall concept of the album and gives the sound a refreshing component. (review)

THIS ENDING „Crowned In Blood“

With „Crowned In Blood“, THIS ENDING have shifted up a gear and create an atmosphere with powerful songs that also exude an epic factor in their relentlessness through the stringent use of melodic riffs. The album is hard-hitting, as the first songs make unmistakably clear, but the band’s good songwriting ensures that it doesn’t just become a blunt orgy of bludgeoning. And there are even songs that surprise with their overall concept.

„Will Of Iron“ is very interesting and shows a different facet. The song comes with a beautiful chorus and brings a little heroic power metal feeling to this hard-hitting banger. Hope In Inferno“ is also a little surprise. The popular theme of the acoustic guitar is taken up again, but this time it is different than you would expect. The clean guitar sounds remain in the song and are later combined with the heavy riffing. The song actually holds back at first. And even though it becomes more robust as it progresses, it still retains its ballad-like character. I really like the development within the song and the composition and combination of elements, because this song sets a different accent, but fits wonderfully into the overall concept. (review)

OAK, ASH & THORN from Denver are definitely one of those promising bands that make you want more. The melodic death metal is once again interpreted very imaginatively and presented wonderfully. I can’t completely deny a progressive approach either, as the musical influences are diverse. The outstanding Cierra White presents a high level of skill on the drums throughout. It is as lively and dynamic as I have hardly heard anywhere else. There are many demanding rhythm changes, which flow naturally into one another without the musical flow being lost. Mercilessly rattling blast beats are also part of the repertoire.

Singer Adam impresses with a wide range of his vocal abilities. The use of powerful melodic vocals is really very successful and are just as impressive as the extreme vocals. With „Our Grief Is Thus“, OAK, ASH & THORN present a fantastic album that combines destructive melodic death metal with extremely powerful power metal, with a pinch of black metal thrown in for good measure. Everything is realized extremely dynamically at the highest technical level, with dark abysses, unrestrained attacks and epic excursions telling highly appealing and eventful stories. (review)

ACT OF CREATION „Moments To Remain“

ACT OF CREATION certainly leave no one unimpressed, because the songs offer a hell of a lot of great moments. ACT OF CREATION storm mercilessly forward with a tremendous force without getting bogged down in simply structured, predictable attacks. Rather, they manage to keep the tension and entertainment value very high through cleverly thought-out songwriting. The technical presentation is phenomenal and the powerful production is in no way inferior. An absolute must-buy!

Unfortunately, the band no longer exists, as they announced their break-up in December. A great pity, but I think that the musicians will certainly be heard from again somewhere.

WOLFHEART „Draconian Darkness“

In my opinion, WOLFHEART have never delivered a bad or average album. For me, their development culminated in the album „King Of The North“. It seemed to me that WOLFHEART had perfected their sound, if that’s the right word to use. The sound had reached monumental proportions, combining aggressive dark Nordic heaviness with epic escapades.

„Draconian Darkenss“ continues this journey and anyone who liked the last album will immediately feel at home on the new one. The quality of the songs is on the same level. During the opening track „Ancient Cold“, it becomes particularly clear that WOLFHEART now like to work with imposing orchestral elements that lend the whole thing a gigantic, sublime aura. But they don’t rely on this. For example, „Evenfall“ dispenses with symphonic, pompous excursions and instead marches forward in a straightforward, old-school manner. However, a small acoustic folkloristic interlude provides an original touch. „Draconian Darkness“ is another consistently excellent album, which is why I see no reason to deduct a point. (review)

DARK TRANQUILLITY „Endtime Signals“

DARK TRANQUILLITY have been a big name in the scene for ages and have released great albums throughout their career. The last album „Moment“ was released four years ago and now this year they have once again created a buzz with their 13th album „Endtime Signals“. I can share this enthusiasm, because DARK TRANQUILLITY stand for a wonderful symbiosis between rigorous heaviness and emotional moments. I’ve always really appreciated Mikael Stanne’s vocals. His growls are excellent, because he manages the feat of sounding so clear and distinct in this extreme range that you can understand almost everything. On the other hand, his clean voice sounds phenomenal and embodies pure emotion. At the same time, they attach great importance to an atmospheric density in the songs, which is also characterized by the intelligent use of keys. DARK TRANQILLITY have once again packed all these ingredients into 12 songs. Actually, you can always buy their albums blindly.

NIGHT IN GALES „Shadowreaper“

This album was reviewed by my editorial colleague Moldi and I agree with his conclusion. So I’ll make it easy for myself and quote his summary.(review-only german)

Hardly any other active band celebrates classic Swedish melodic death metal like Night in Gales. No intro, no outro, no frills, no gap fillers, just pure 90s. The slightly different sound, which will please every purist, does the rest. The songs are well structured and always offer a lot of variety. Even the clean vocals in the few passages are not distracting. Jens Basten simply has more melodies in his little finger than others (can) pack onto an entire album. The more the album spins, the better it gets. Genre lovers can and should go for it blindly!

DISPARAGED „Down The Heavens“

DISPARAGED from Switzerland have had an eleven-year break, but are back with a great bang. Even though DISPARAGED’s death metal is melodic, the vocals have a hard edge. The overall sound is brutal and I immediately noticed the furious drumming on first listen. Drummer Heinz unleashes a breathtaking show here and, in addition to blatant blastbeat attacks, also delivers incredible liveliness and dynamics in the time-reduced phases. This dynamic is taken up by the other musicians and further refined and intensified. The guitars saw their way brutally through the songs with their riffs, while the lead guitar does an excellent job and attacks with incredible solos.

With „Down The Heavens“, DISPARAGED have created a death metal monument with a very generous playing time of over 60 minutes. The songs show other facets through excellent songwriting, creating a dense, fascinating atmosphere. It is a real pleasure to listen to this excellent show. At the end you are speechless and overwhelmed! What a magnificent comeback!(review)

Die Nummer entstammt dem für den 29.11.2024 zur Veröffentlichung vorgesehenen Studioalbum „Rush of power“. Mal schauen, wie das vierte Album des Fünfers einschlagen wird:

TROLLWAR, JUMPSCARE, TZADOK & mehr

SOULSKINNER stammen aus Griechenland und haben sich auch dem melodischen Death Metal verschrieben. Am 26.11.2024 plant man das Release seines nächsten Studioalbums „Glorified by the light“. Die bereits sechste Langrille der fünfköpfigen Formation enthält zehn Songs und wir haben als Kostprobe für eure Ohren heute „Mighty titans“ parat. Musik ab:

Weiter geht es mit Heavy Metal aus Mexico. Dort sind TZADOK beheimatet. Der Vierer hat einen Deal mit Wormholedeath gesigned und wollen am 06.12.2024 ihr neues Album „We are TZADOK“ veröffentlichen. Man möchte acht Songs auf diesen Silberling packen. Einen davon stellen wir euch mit dem dazugehörigen Video vor: „Redeemer man“. Starkes Ding!

Kommen wir abschließend zu REVERENT TALES. Die portugiesischen Metaller haben Ende Oktober mit „Your future died“ einen neuen Song veröffentlicht. Man integriert dabei verschiedene Stile, u.a. progressive Elemente. Weitere Musik soll folgen. Der Anfang ist gemacht…und das ganz ordentlich, meint ihr nicht?

ANDY GILLION (Facebook/Homepage) ist ein begnadeter Musiker, dessen erster Kontakt mit der Welt der Musik nicht die Gitarre, sondern das Klavier war. Er war fünf Jahre jung, als er damit begann. Erst nach Jahren kam die Gitarre und das Schlagzeug hinzu. Andy ist also ein Multiinstrumentalist, dürfte aber den meisten als Gitarrist und Songwriter der erfolgreichen schwedischen Band ‚Mors Principium Est‘ bekannt sein. Aber das ist nicht seine einzige Spielwiese. Neben seinem Soloprojekt schreibt er auch Soundtracks für Computerspiele, Filme usw.

Mit seinem Soloprojekt hat er bereits die Alben „Neverafter“(2019) und „Arcade Metal“ (2022) veröffentlicht, welche rein instrumentaler Natur waren. Andy ist sicherlich kein Typ für halbe Sachen. Als Vollblutmusiker hat er sich einen großen Namen gemacht. Mit so einem hervorragenden Ruf in der Szene weckt man natürlich Erwartungen. Und diese hat er bisher immer mehr als erfüllt. So war ich sehr gespannt auf sein neues Album „Exilium“

Neue Wege

Einen ersten Vorgeschmack gab es mit der Single „Prophecy“, die uns bereits prophezeite, dass es diesmal kein Instrumentalalbum werden wird. Andy gibt sich zum ersten Mal selber die Ehre bei den Vocals und schmettert mit harten Growls die Lyrics. Also der Mann ist wirklich ein Multitalent!

„Prophecy“ ist der Opener des neuen Albums und er verspricht einen hohen Härtegrad. Hier geht es richtig zur Sache. „Prophecy“ ist eine hemmungslose Attacke, welche in höchstem Maße kunstvoll dargeboten wird. Das Violinenspiel gleich zu Beginn gefällt mir auch sehr gut. Es dient aber nur der Einleitung und taucht später noch einmal in einem Instrumentalpart auf. Dafür bekommen wir knallhartes Riffing und fantastische Gitarrensolos geboten. Ein wahre Freude Andy dabei zu hören und auch zu sehen. Ebenso darf man sich auf ein flammendes Drum-Inferno von Dave Haley freuen, der hier auch eine Wahnsinnsperformance liefert.

Stürmisch

Der Sound verbleibt in rauen Gewässern und die Songs fegen gnadenlos stürmisch über alles hinweg. „Call To Arms“ ist eine brutale Vernichtungsmaschine, in der alle Stärken herausgestellt werden. Andy bindet auch mal symphonische Elemente ein, hält sich dabei aber zurück, denn der Fokus richtet sich dabei natürlich auf das famose Gitarrenspiel, über dessen fantastische Qualität kein Zweifel besteht und unglaublich beeindruckend ist. Zudem schmettert Andy seine Vocals ansprechend raus und die Growls klingen gut, haben Power und Aggression.

Das macht nicht nur den Song „Call To Arms“ zu einer gewaltigen Show. Doch auf die Gesamtlänge des Albums hätte ich mir mehr Variation gewünscht, auch gesanglich. Ansätze von cleanen Gesangslinien finden sich mal hier und da, wie z.B. am Schluss von „Acceptance“.

Tolle Gastsängerin

Aber am deutlichsten wird das bei dem Song „As The Kingdom Burns“ eingesetzt. Denn hier hat Andy als gesangliche Verstärkung Brittney Slayes von der Band ‚Unleash The Archers‘ eingeladen. Der Song sticht damit eklatant im Gesamtkonzept des Albums hervor und schenkt dem Sound eine erfrischende Komponente ohne das dieser an Härte und Druck verliert. Eine meiner Meinung nach sehr gelungene Kombination, auch wenn das Fans des no-clean-singing dies sicherlich anders sehen würden. Aber hört doch mal selbst und bildet euch ein eigenes Urteil.

Fazit

ANDY GILLION geht auf seinen Soloreisen mit dem Album „Exilium“ neue Wege und gibt auf diesem Album sein Debüt als Sänger. Und auch dafür hat der vielseitig begabte Musiker Talent und zeigt eine enorme wütende Inbrunst, die dazu führt, dass man auf „Exilium“ von gnadenlos harten Attacken überrannt wird. Die technische Umsetzung ist überaus beeindruckend und die musikalischen Attacken werden auf hohem Niveau geführt.

ANDY GILLION (Facebook/Homepage) is a gifted musician whose first contact with the world of music was not the guitar, but the piano. He was five years old when he started. It was only years later that he picked up the guitar and drums. Andy is therefore a multi-instrumentalist, but is probably best known as the guitarist and songwriter for the successful Swedish band ‚Mors Principium Est‘. But that is not his only playground. In addition to his solo project, he also writes soundtracks for computer games, films, etc.

With his solo project, he has already released the albums „Neverafter“ (2019) and „Arcade Metal“ (2022), which were purely instrumental. Andy is certainly not a guy for half measures. He has made a great name for himself as a thoroughbred musician. With such an outstanding reputation in the scene, you naturally raise expectations. And he has always more than fulfilled them. So I was very excited about his new album „Exilium“.

New paths

The single „Prophecy“ gave us a first taste of what’s to come, already predicting that this time it won’t be an instrumental album. For the first time, Andy does the honours on the vocals himself, belting out the lyrics with hard growls. The man really is a multi-talent!

„Prophecy“ is the opener of the new album and it promises a high degree of heaviness. It really gets down to business here. „Prophecy“ is an unrestrained attack that is presented with the utmost artistry. I also really like the violin playing right at the beginning. However, it only serves as an introduction and appears again later in an instrumental part. On the other hand, we are treated to hard-hitting riffing and fantastic guitar solos. It’s a real pleasure to hear and see Andy play. You can also look forward to a flaming drum inferno from Dave Haley, who also delivers an insane performance.

Stormy

The sound remains in rough waters and the songs sweep mercilessly and stormily over everything. „Call To Arms“ is a brutal machine of destruction in which all strengths are emphasised. Andy also incorporates symphonic elements from time to time, but holds back, because the focus is naturally on the fantastic guitar playing, which is beyond doubt incredibly impressive. Andy also belts out his vocals in an appealing manner and the growls sound good and have power and aggression.

This not only makes the song „Call To Arms“ a powerful show. However, I would have liked more variation over the entire length of the album, including the vocals. There are hints of clean vocal lines here and there, such as at the end of „Acceptance“.

Great guest singer

But this is most clearly utilised in the song „As The Kingdom Burns“. Andy has invited Brittney Slayes from the band ‚Unleash The Archers‘ to provide vocal support. The song stands out strikingly in the overall concept of the album and gives the sound a refreshing component without losing much of its heaviness and pressure. A very successful combination in my opinion, even if fans of no-clean-singing would certainly see it differently. But listen for yourself and form your own judgement.

Conclusion

ANDY GILLION breaks new ground on his solo mission with the album „Exilium“ and makes his debut as a singer on this album. And the multi-talented musician also has a talent for this, displaying an enormous, furious fervour that leads to „Exilium“ being overrun by mercilessly hard attacks. The technical realisation is extremely impressive and the musical attacks are carried out at a high level.

KVAEN (Facebook) ist ein Soloprojekt des Musikers Jacob Björnfot. Inspiration für den Bandnamen war übrigens die Bezeichnung des Stammes, welches zur Wikingerzeit die Heimat von Jacob bevölkert hat. Jacob stammt aus Kalix im hohen Norden Schwedens. Dort schmiedet er seine dunkle Musik. Er fühlt sich sehr wohl dort abseits der großen Städte.

Unsere Umgebung, die bizarren Wetterbedingungen, die Nordlichter usw. prägen die Art und Weise, wie wir Dinge sehen und hören. Es beeinflusst uns mehr, als wir denken. Ich denke, es ist viel besser, hier aufzuwachsen als in Stockholm zum Beispiel. Ich habe Großstädte nie gemocht, außer für Wochenendbesuche. Ich mag die Großstadtmentalität nicht; hier sind wir alle ruhig und bodenständig. Ich bin in meinen Dreißigern und die meisten Leute sind entweder weggegangen oder zurückgekehrt. Ich habe nicht vor, in nächster Zeit irgendwohin zu gehen. Ich gehe immer noch in meine Hütte in den Wäldern von Torne Valley und schreibe viel Musik, vor allem im Winter, der sich sehr lang und manchmal hart anfühlen kann.

Diese einsame Abgeschiedenheit scheint Jacob jedenfalls sehr zu inspirieren. Mit seinem letzten großartigen Album „The Great Below“ hat er seine musikalischen Fähigkeiten mehr als eindrucksvoll unter Beweis gestellt. Der Sound von KVAEN führt uns in turbulente Gewässer und Stromschnellen des Black Metal, Speed Metal und Pagan Metal. Weiterhin ist er ganz allein für das Songwriting und das Einspielen der Instrumente verantwortlich. Nur die Drums werden von Fredrik Andersson geprügelt, der übrigens auch zum stabilen Live-Line-Up gehört, welches Jacob um sich versammelt hat.

„The Formless Fires“

als Titeltrack eröffnet das Album. Das Vorgängeralbum war schon echt stark, doch Jacob hat es geschafft den Sound auf ein noch höheres Niveau zu heben. Im Vergleich war „The Great Below“ ein rauer wütender Sturm, der mit brachialer Gewalt alles weggefegt hat. Der Sound war etwas grobschlächtiger, wenn man das mit den neuen Songs vergleicht. Ohne an schwarzmetallischer Energie einzubüßen, hat KVAEN mehr Feinheiten verpasst bekommen, was man nicht nur am detailverliebten Songwriting feststellen kann, sondern vor allem beim Gitarrenspiel. Dadurch gewinnt der Sound an klangvoller Macht und erschafft gewaltige melodische Momente, die sogar in epische Gefilde reichen. Dazu muss man sich beim Opener nur den Solopart anhören. Ein völliger Kontrast zu den harschen finsteren Phasen, aber wunderbar eingebunden und fantastisch gespielt. Das sind Dinge, die einem Song zusätzlich Charakter verleihen.

Mit dem zweiten Song „Traverse The Nether“ wird es noch höllischer. Das Riffing ist ein feuriges Höllenfest und es geht darüber hinaus teuflisch schnell zur Sache. Und auch hier gibt es ein Flitzefingersolo, dass euch garantiert aus den Schuhen hauen wird. Verantwortlich dafür ist Gastgitarrist Sebastian Ramstedt (Necrophobic). Mir gefällt, dass die Songs auf dem neuen Album noch mehr Individualität ausstrahlen. „Tornets Sång“ hat wieder eine andere Ausstrahlung. Der Song geht mehr Richtung Pagan-Metal. Mit schwungvollen fiesen Riffs werden die marschierenden Drums begleitet. Das Riffing ändert sich beizeiten und wird dann melodischer, so dass ein feiner Kontrast entsteht.

Dasselbe gilt für „The Ancient Gods“, welches ebenfalls im im gemäßigten Tempo verharrt und sich genauso als Hymne entpuppt. Das sind so soundtechnische Erscheinungen, die man auf dem Vorgängeralbum nicht zu hören bekommen hat. Deshalb klingen die neuen Songs nicht immer so abgrundtief finster wie auf dem letzten Album, was ich aber gar nicht als negativen Aspekt betrachte, sondern als neue Facette. Damit unterstreicht man auch eine Entwicklung im Soundkonzept.

Nachdem man sich während zwei Songs ein wenig „ausruhen“ konnte, so feuert „Basilisk“ wieder aus allen Rohren. Und ich kann verstehen, dass Jacob sich für die Drums Fredrik Andersson (ex-Amon Amarth) an Bord geholt hat. Denn so eine wilde Prügelorgie wie z.B. bei „Basilisk“ wird nicht jeder Drummer liefern können. Hier gibt es Fratzengeballer ohne Ende. Eine wahre Orgie der schwarzmetallischen Kunst, die wieder einmal mit einem ekstatischen Gitarrensolo begeistert. Vor allem die Klänge ab Minute 02:20 finde ich super genial und haben eine ganz besondere Ausstrahlung. Kann man kaum beschreiben… muss man gehört haben. Also hier muss man herausstellen, dass schon vorher geilen Solos sich nochmals in ihrer Qualität gesteigert haben. Ich bin jedenfalls hin und weg von dem, was ich hier zu hören bekomme. Überragend!

In der Tat kann ich nach dieser wilden Orgie wieder kurzfristig etwas Erholung gebrauchen und die von akustischen Gitarrenklängen geprägte Einleitung des Songs „De Dödas Sång“ kommt mir da gerade recht. Die Drums klopfen immer eindringlicher an und so soll es nicht lange dauern, bis der Song mit Kraft die Tür eintritt und zum Tanz auffordert. Also flott die Hufe schwingen und den Nacken kreisen lassen. Bei den letzten beiden Songs „The Perpetual Darkness“ und „The Wings of Death“ kommt wieder mehr die epische Note zur Geltung, die auf diesem Album Einzug gefunden hat. Beim Finalsong wird das Gitarrensolo übrigens von Chaq Mol (Dark Funeral) dargeboten.

Ich möchte ausdrücklich noch auf den lyrischen Inhalt eingehen, der sich äußerst interessant gestaltet. Ich bin ein Fan von Mythologie und liebe alte Sagen und Geschichten, die in verschiedenen Völkern der Erde überliefert werden. Das sind unheimlich spannende Themen. Auch Jacob ist diesem Thema sehr zugetan, wie er hier erklärt:

Ich liebe Mythologie. Der Basilisk ist zum Beispiel der König der Schlangen, wird aber vom Mainstream selten erwähnt. In „The Perpetual Darkness“ geht es darum, dass man anders geboren wird als die ’normalen‘ Menschen. Es geht auch darum, ein einsamer Wolf zu sein und von der Gesellschaft verbannt zu werden. Dieser Song ist zu einem meiner persönlichen Favoriten geworden. Darüber hinaus behandelt De Dödas Sång (Song Of The Dead) das verstörende Thema Ättestupa, das altnordische Selbstmordritual, bei dem ältere Dorfbewohner von steilen Abgründen in den Tod springen (grafisch dargestellt im schwedisch-amerikanischen Horrorfilm Midsommar von 2019). Da steckt viel Geschichte drin. Ich möchte nicht zu viel verraten, denn die Hälfte des Spaßes besteht darin, das Booklet aufzuschlagen und die Texte zu lesen!

Fazit

KVAEN setzt seine Erfolgsserie mit dem neuen Album „The Formless Fires“ imposant fort. Es offenbaren sich neue hochklassige Facetten im Sound und im Songwriting. So klingt das neue Album insgesamt nicht derart finster und grob wie der Vorgänger, dafür werden dem schwarzmetallischen Sound großartige Momente geschenkt, die sich auch in einer fantastischen Gitarrenarbeit offenbaren. Das Riffing und vor allem die Solos sind ein unglaublich intensives Vergnügen und schenken den Songs einen wertvollen Glanz und auch einen epischen Touch.

Es ist ein weiterer (Fort-)schritt und stellt die herausragenden Qualitäten des multiinstrumentalen Musikers eindrucksvoll zur Schau. Lobenswert ist darüber hinaus, dass mit Fredrik Andersson ein überragender Drummer an Bord geholt wurde, der dem Anspruch von KVAEN mehr als gerecht wird und eine wahnsinnig gute Leistung abliefert, die den Sound noch zusätzlich mit viel Energie und Dynamik bereichert. Für mich ist „The Formless Fires“ eine grandiose Leistung.

KVAEN (Facebook) is a solo project by musician Jacob Björnfot. The inspiration for the band name was the name of the tribe that populated Jacob’s homeland during the Viking Age. Jacob comes from Kalix in the far north of Sweden. This is where he forges his dark music. He feels very much at home there, away from the big cities.

Our surroundings, the bizarre weather conditions, the northern lights, etc. shape the way we see and hear things. It influences us more than we think. I think it’s much better to grow up here than in Stockholm, for example. I’ve never liked big cities, except for weekend visits. I don’t like the big city mentality; here we’re all quiet and down to earth. I’m in my thirties and most people have either left or returned. I have no plans to go anywhere anytime soon. I still go to my cabin in the woods in Torne Valley and write a lot of music, especially in the winter, which can feel very long and sometimes hard.

This solitary seclusion certainly seems to inspire Jacob. With his last great album „The Great Below“, he has more than impressively demonstrated his musical abilities. The sound of KVAEN takes us into the turbulent waters and rapids of black & death metal and a bit of pagan metal Furthermore, he is solely responsible for the songwriting and playing the instruments. Only the drums are beaten by Fredrik Andersson, who incidentally is also part of the stable live line-up that Jacob has assembled around him.

„The Formless Fires“

as the title track opens the album. The previous album was already really strong, but Jacob has managed to raise the sound to an even higher level. In comparison, „The Great Below“ was a raw, angry storm that swept everything away with brute force. The sound was a bit rougher when compared to the new songs. Without losing any of its black metal energy, KVAEN has been given more finesse, which can be heard not only in the detailed songwriting, but above all in the guitar playing. As a result, the sound gains sonic power and creates powerful melodic moments that even reach into epic realms. You only have to listen to the solo part of the opener. A complete contrast to the harsh, dark phases, but wonderfully integrated and fantastically played. These are things that give a song additional character.

The second song, „Traverse The Nether“, is even more hellish. The riffing is a fiery hell-fest and things get devilishly fast. And here, too, there is a lightning-fingered solo that is guaranteed to knock your socks off. Guest guitarist Sebastian Ramstedt (Necrophobic) is responsible for this. I like the fact that the songs on the new album radiate even more individuality. „Tornets Sång“ has a different vibe again. The song goes more in the direction of pagan metal. The marching drums are accompanied by sweeping, nasty riffs. The riffing changes at times and then becomes more melodic, creating a subtle contrast.

The same applies to „The Ancient Gods“, which also remains at a moderate tempo and also turns out to be a hymn. These are technical sound phenomena that you didn’t get to hear on the previous album. That’s why the new songs don’t always sound as abysmally dark as on the last album, which I don’t see as a negative aspect, but rather as a new facet. This also underlines a development in the sound concept.

After being able to „rest“ a little for two songs, „Basilisk“ fires from all guns again. And I can understand why Jacob got Fredrik Andersson (ex-Amon Amarth) on board for the drums. Because not every drummer will be able to deliver such a wild beating orgy as on „Basilisk“, for example. A true orgy of black metal art, which once again delights with an ecstatic guitar solo. I particularly like the sounds from minute 02:20 onwards and they have a very special aura. You can hardly describe it… You have to hear it. So here you have to emphasize that the quality of the already great solos has increased even more. In any case, I’m blown away by what I get to hear here. Outstanding!

In fact, after this wild orgy, I could do with some short-term relaxation and the introduction to the song „De Dödas Sång“, characterized by acoustic guitar sounds, comes just at the right time. The drums knock more and more insistently and so it’s not long before the song kicks in the door with force. In the last two songs, „The Perpetual Darkness“ and „The Wings of Death“, the epic note that has found its way onto this album comes to the fore again. Incidentally, the guitar solo on the final song is performed by Chaq Mol (Dark Funeral).

I would like to specifically mention the lyrical content, which is extremely interesting. I am a fan of mythology and love old legends and stories that have been passed down in different peoples of the world. These are incredibly exciting topics. Jacob is also very fond of this subject, as he explains here:

I love mythology. The basilisk, for example, is the king of snakes, but is rarely mentioned by the mainstream. The Perpetual Darkness is about being born different from ’normal‘ people. It’s also about being a lone wolf and being banished from society. This song has become one of my personal favorites. In addition, De Dödas Sång (Song Of The Dead) deals with the disturbing theme of Ättestupa, the old Norse suicide ritual in which elderly villagers jump to their deaths from steep precipices (graphically depicted in the 2019 Swedish-American horror film Midsommar). There’s a lot of history in it. I don’t want to give too much away, because half the fun is opening the booklet and reading the lyrics!

Conclusion

KVAEN impressively continues its successful streak with the new album „The Formless Fires“. New high-class facets are revealed in the sound and songwriting. Overall, the new album doesn’t sound as dark and coarse as its predecessor, but the black metal sound is given some great moments, which are also revealed in the fantastic guitar work. The riffing and especially the solos are an incredibly intense pleasure and give the songs a valuable sheen and an epic touch.

It is another step and impressively showcases the outstanding qualities of the multi-instrumental musician. It is also commendable that with Fredrik Andersson, an outstanding drummer has been brought on board, who more than lives up to KVAEN’s claim and delivers an incredibly good performance, which further enriches the sound with a lot of energy and dynamics. For me, „The Formless Fires“ is a magnificent achievement.
