THIS ENDING – „Crowned In Blood“ Review

„Crowned In Blood“

THIS ENDING (Facebook) from Sweden will complete their bloody coronation on Friday with their fifth longplayer „Crowned In Blood“. I couldn’t really get into the first two albums „Inside The Machine“ and „Dead Harvest“. But with the third album „Garden Of Death“, which was released seven years later, that they took the decisive step for me and were able to convince with strong songs. The band stepped up the tempo considerably and the overall sound was more harmonious, but still more aggressive. They continued on this path and it’s often a phenomenon that bands make their sound more extreme over time. „Needles Of Rust“ confirmed this path and with „Crowned In Blood“ it gets even more extreme.
„Crowned In Blood“
This is immediately and drastically expressed with the powerful opener and title track „Crowned In Blood“. This sinister orgy of destruction lasts almost seven minutes. It is in parts a very thrashy trip with a damn high tempo and massive charisma. The nimble melodic guitar riffs are very dynamic and also take care of the epic factor. I’m not sure whether I really like the sharp cut into the quiet acoustic part (minute 03:24). It’s like slowing down from highway to playground. But the epic part that follows is right up my cup of tea and then the song really takes off again. „Birth Of Evil“ goes one better in terms of heaviness and beats the listener through hell without stopping. There are definitely some black metal vibes coming across here. I really like the nasty, but wonderfully epic melodic chorus.
„DEVILS“ continues the journey seamlessly. However, the spoken parts are not quite 100% to my taste. The whole sound on the album remains coherent and creates a harmonious atmosphere, which nevertheless radiates an epic factor in its relentlessness thanks to the stringent use of melodic riffs. „Will Of Iron“ is very interesting and shows another facet. It comes with a beautiful chorus and brings a little heroic power metal feeling to the otherwise hard-hitting banger. „Blood King“, an instrumental acoustic interlude, brings a little relaxation to the inferno at half-time.
Really strong
Afterwards, „A Venomous Prison“ throws itself back into battle with full force. But the following „Hope In Inferno“ is a bit of a surprise. The popular theme of the acoustic guitar is taken up again, but this time it’s different than you might expect. These clean guitar sounds remain in the song and are later combined with the heavy riffing. At first the song holds back. And even though it becomes more raw as it progresses, it still retains its ballad-like character. I really like the development within the song and the composition and combination of elements, because this song sets a different accent, but fits wonderfully into the overall concept.
This is followed by the longest song on the album at over seven minutes. „Lord, Master, King & Emperor-All in One“ goes in full force again and blows your head off by revealing some of the most draconian moments on the journey. These are also created by certain black metal injections. All in all, the seven minutes just race by. „Awakening“ and „Light The Flame“ bring the album to a fittingly hard-hitting finale without showing any weaknesses.
Conclusion
THIS ENDING have shifted up a gear again with „Crowned In Blood“. There is more of everything that has characterized THIS ENDING so far. It has become heavier and darker, but also more monumental and epic. It’s an album full of tremendous songs that don’t show any weakness and are technically beaten at a high level. It is a coherent album with an impressively vehement sound. Overall, one or two concise ideas would have been desirable, which would have given the whole thing even more highlights. But in the end, it has to be said that „Crowned In Blood“ is a damn strong performance.
