Großer Jubel! Es geht weiter mit den namhaften Acts auf der Persistence Tour! Vor einigen Tagen wurden zwei weitere großartige Bands bestätigt!

Nach 2016 wird die aus Pennsylvania/US stammende Hardcore-Band Wisdom In Chains erneut dabei sein! Eigentlich wollte die Band um Frontmann Mad Joe Black ja schon diesen Sommer in Europa touren. Leider mussten die Termine aber wegen gesundheitlicher Probleme abgesagt werden. Mittlerweile ist Mad Joe aber wieder fit und es steht einer Tournee nichts im Wege! Ganz nach dem Motto des aktuellen Albums: „Nothing In Nature Respects Weakness“ möchten sich die Männer natürlich nichts Nachsagen lassen und werden es ordentlich krachen lassen. Und weil das Album eines der besten Hardcore-Scheiben des Jahres 2018 ist, darf man sich hundertprozentig auf einen amtlichen Abriss einstellen!

Band Nummer Sechs ist ebenfalls eine ganz Bekannte! Zumindest ist der Gründer der Band ein ganz Bekannter. Es ist Music-Work-A-Holic und ex-Biohazard Gitarrist Billy Graziadei mit seiner Band BillyBio! Das blonde Kraftpaket scheint ein Dauerabonnement der Persistence Tour zu besitzen. Bekanntlich haben BillyBio ja schon auf der 2019er Tour (zumindest in Oberhausen) gezockt. Jetzt kommt also die komplette Tour dazu! Sehr cool! Wir freuen uns jetzt schon auf die Show zu den „Feed The Fire„-Songs! Atemberaubende Bühnenaction ist bei Billy und Co. definitiv garantiert und die Auftritte der Band werden die Tour absolut bereichern. Davon sind wir von www.metal-heads.de absolut überzeugt. Powerflo spielten am 21.06.2018 im kleinen Luxor in Köln. metal-heads.de besuchte den Gig der All-Star-Band um Sänger Sen Dog und liefert neben dem Bericht auch 1A Bilder.

Die Band veröffentlichte im Juli 2017 das Debütalbum auch in Deutschland und schlugen in eine sehr sehr derbe Kerbe damit ein. Die Kapelle besteht aktuell aus Sen Dog (Cypress Hill), Rogelio Lozano (Downset), Billy Graziadei (Biohazard), Christian Olde Wolbers (Ex-Fear Factory) sowie Fernando Schaefer (Worst).

Grindhouse erwischten keinen guten Tag

Den Support machten die Jungs von Grindhouse. Irgendwo zwischen Old School Hardcore und Punk wurden die wenigen Besucher im Luxor knapp 25-Minuten unterhalten. Die Band kämpfte neben Soundproblemen auch mit Problemen mit dem eigenen Equipment. Direkt zum Anfang riss eine Gitarrensaite und der Wechsel dieser zog sich über 5-Minuten hin. Das ist leider eher unvorteilhaft für den Sound, wenn die Gitarre das einzige Melodieinstrument ist. Was dann folgte, war leider nicht wirklich besser. Hier und da konnte man im Anschluss die Gitarre nicht bzw. kaum hören. Hier gibt es die aktuelle Platte zum Anhören, die deutlich positiveres von der Band preisgibt als der (leider) vermurkste Gig.

Pünktlich um 21 Uhr startete die Show von Powerflo. Nach einem Intro von N.W.A. starteten die Jungs mit „Resistance“. Was für eine Bombe! Der Sound hatte ordentlich Druck und die Kapelle ging mächtig ab. Gitarrist Billy sprang, poste, head-bangte wie ein Teenager auf der Bühne hin und her. Der Aktionsradius von Sen Dog hingegen war der von einem IKEA-Kühlschrank. Dafür bewegten sich Christian und Rogelio ordentlich. Das Luxor war mit 120 Leuten dürftig gefüllt (komisch bei so einer hohen Dichte von Superstars). Die wenigen hielten dafür die Stimmung am Leben!

Besonders gut kamen die Songs „The Grind“, „Where I Stay“ und „Made It This Way“ an. Hier wurde nach einer Ansage von Sen der Club in Kürze auf links gedreht. Hoffentlich kommen die Jungs mit einem neuen Album bald wieder.

BIRU BABY – Ladies first

Ich fange mal bei den Mädchen von BIRU BABY an. Sie sind irgendwo zwischen BABYMETAL (nur irgendwie ‚erwachsener‘) und DIE ANTWOORD (allerdings nicht ganz so abgedreht) einzuordnen – oder eben auch nicht.

Schaut selbst:

HÁNNA, KT und IKI stammen aus dem Kulturraum der Samen, das Gebiete in Finnland, Russland, Schweden und Norwegen umfasst. Über die Entstehung der Band im Jahr 2014 wird berichtet, dass IKI ihre Rentiere durch die Finmark trieb, dabei auf HÁNNÁs Lavvu (das traditionelle Zelt der Samen) stieß und sich dort mit mit ihr anfreundete. Später trafen sie auf KT (leider wird nicht erzählt, wie dieses Zusammentreffen zustande kam), die die Band vervollständigte.

BIRU BABY wollen sich in keine Schublade stecken lassen. Sie mischen traditionelle Sounds mit Metalelementen und Synthesizerklängen.

Visuelle Kunst

Bei ihren Shows werden sie von HELL-G begleitet, mit dem zusammen sie verrückte Auftritte veranstalten.

Ihr  Album Ancien Call, das im April 2018 erschien,  ist exzentrisch, surreal und bizarr. Das kann man auch von ihren Videos sagen, die fantastisch und eigenartig sind.

POWERFLO die Crossover-Vision

Die Jungs von POWERFLO sind keine Unbekannten. Mit Sen Dog (Vocals) von CYPRESS HILL, Bill Graziadei (Gitarre) von BIOHAZARD, Roy Lozano (Gitarre) von DOWNSET, Christian Olde Wolbers am Bass (Ex-FEAR FACTORY) und Fernando Schaefer, Drums (WORST) kommen Musiker aus Band zusammen, die dort schon mit Mischungen aus Metal, Hardcore, Punk und HipHop gearbeitet haben.

2016 begann ihre Zusammenarbeit an Songs, die das Fundament für das im Juni 2017 erschienene selbstbetitelte Album Powerflo bildeten. Den Review dazu könnt ihr HIER lesen.

Dabei betrachten alle POWERFLO-Mitglieder diese Band nicht lediglich als ein Nebenprojekt, sondern als ein weiteres Experimentierfeld für Crossover-Geschichten.

Bring That Shit Back

HipHop, Heavy Metal, Punk und Rock werden zu einem wahren Kraftpaket verbunden. Die gemeinsame Arbeit wurde dadurch erleichtert, dass sich die POWERFLO-Mitglieder schon so lange kennen, jeder weiß, wie der andere drauf ist und worauf es ihnen ankommt.

Jetzt kündigen POWERFLO eine neue EP mit dem Titel Bring That Shit Back an.

Wir hatten die Chance Sen Dog für ein Interview zu gewinnen und sprachen u. a. über die Bands, die er hört sowie die Aufteilung innerhalb der Band. HIER könnt ihr das volle Interview mit Sen nachlesen. Im folgenden ein kleiner Auszug:

Which Heavy Metal or Hardcore bands do you like? And which influenced you and why?

My favorite metal bands are Slayer, Pantera, Megadeth, Anthrax, Motörhead, System of a Down, Body Count, Metallica, Soundgarden and Hatebreed. I think I’m influenced by all these bands but not to be like them or sound like them – for instance I am influenced by Metallica’s longevity, professionalism and commitment to their craft. Body Count has influenced me for their aggression and their “fuck you if you ain’t down with us” attitude. I pay attention to what the greats do outside of the studio or off the stage as well the legendary songs that bands create.

I am close to the music of the individual members and for me the record sounds like that everybody somehow contributed his style in a song. That sounds like the band is a democratic band. Was it important for you that everybody contributed something?

Yes Powerflo has a democratic writing process, we all contribute ideas into every song no matter who came up with main idea. I want my band mates to feel like we’re a brother hood one for all and all for one type shit. I think you get the best out of people when we create a team environment.

Auf ein Wort mit Sen Dog

When did you start POWERFLO? What was the vision of the sound and direction you had? Or did all the things come naturally, time after time? Like a puzzle which is building the picture to a whole!

The idea for what would end up being Powerflo was started as a SenDog solo project that was first discussed between myself and Roy Lozano, that was in late 2014 I eventually got the first couple tracks that were written by Roy Lozano and Josh Lynch in early 2015.

I really didn’t have a vision as far as sound or direction all I knew was that I wanted to get into the heavy metal field. I listen to heavy metal everyday and I felt that I could sound good over some metal tracks with tracks from people I respected musically.

Eine ganz natürliche Entwicklung

Things started coming together naturally once we got a couple songs going – at that point I thought this has the potential for a really great band. While we were recorded those songs Roy Lozano would describe my rhyme style on this as a powerflo which basically means a powerful style of music with a rap flow hence the name.

You know, I am a German and I am not quite sure about specific english meanings. The first song of the record is called My M O. I did a research for what M O stands and found this definition:

M O stands for Modus Operandi, a Latin phrase that refers to a pattern of procedure. It is most commonly used by law enforcement to describe the predictable way a criminal commits crimes.

Is that right? And what do you mean in the bridge part with “I am a son of a Bitch // Here for the fame and glory“?

Yes my M.O. is the Latin term Modus Operandi and that song is pretty much about myself. When I say „I am a son of a bitch here for the fame and the glory“ what you should take from that is I feel I am a bad ass at my profession and that I am here to successful to furthest point of our ability and talents

Wann ist ein Song „fertig“ für ein Album?

Art or music is not like a job from 5 to 9 and done. When did you know for this record a song is done or perfect and fits on the LP just like that?

Every artist should know exactly when a song they gave birth to has reached its point of completion. It is very easy to keep working on songs and keep trying to make them better but from my experience it’s very important that you know when a song is good to go just the way it is. It’s rock n roll not rocket science.

Rock and metal music was always an influence for you and your main band Cypress Hill. When do you get in touch with heavy rock and metal music and tried to experiment with hip hop and metal?

Yes rock and metal have always been a big influence on all of us in Cypress Hill and we all grew up listening to bands like Van Halen, Black Sabbath, Kiss, Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, Scorpions, The Who and Thin Lizzy just to name a few along with all the great funk, soul and oldies. All the early hip hop was reaching the west coast in the early 80’s, I think I was around 15 years old when music became really important in my life, I first started experimenting with rock and metal in the mid 90’s when I got involved with a band called SX-10.

„Mordern Hardcore“?

In my area where I live, it´s the home of a lot of famous Hardcore/Beatdown bands and they changed their style over the years into what I call “Modern Hardcore“. The singing style is rap and the musical direction and the roots are hardcore. But then the sound is more metal and the production is darker and heavier. The style of your record reminds me a bit of that. So is the term “Modern Hardcore“ with this definition something, you could accept or is this kind of „genre thinking“ something stupid to categorize bands and fans, and you think, I should not think that way?

I have no problem with the term „modern Hardcore“, because of the fact that we are a new modern band. And we also have a strong hardcore vibe over all. I just see POWERFLO as a metal band.

Your record is out and you will also play some shows in the US. When will the German fans see you guys on stage over here?

Realistically I believe POWERFLO will be touring in Europe in early 2018. If we can get out there sooner, than that we will.

Finally, our artists always have the chance to say the last words. Is there anything you want to share with your fans and our readers?

I would like to say to all the fans and readers that I am extremely greatful for all the support and respect, that we have been given over the last 26 years. I am very honored to have our music received so well around the globe for all this time. For that I say thank you and for that same reason I stay creative always trying to come up with something that the worlds music listeners will embrace.

It’s Sen Dog, Rogelio Lozano from Downset, Billy Graziadei from Biohazard, myself and Fernando Schaefer, who is a drummer in Worst – a Brazilian band….Prophets Of Rage is going out next year, and there’s been talk about Powerflow being the opening band and also Tim’s Commerford’s Wakrat.

Das Album im Soundcheck

New Metal? Crossover? Rapcore? Hardcore? Es steckt von allen dieser Genres irgendetwas im Debütalbum von Powerflo. Die Jungs werden niemanden enttäuschen, der Fan von Deez Nuts, Body Count oder Limp Bizkit ist. Die erwähnten Body Count von ICE-T überraschten uns im Frühjahr mit dem Album „Blood Lust“. Jedoch toppen Powerflo ihre Crossover-Kollegen um wenige Meter.

Sen Dog mag es gerne hart! Dies hat er mit seiner Main-Band Cypress Hill oder bei diversen Features (u. a. Biohazard) schon mehrmals gezeigt. Mit seiner All-Star-Truppe rappt der Frontmann über diverse Themen wie Unterdrückung, Dope und eine gute Zeit in L.A.!! Zugegeben, lyrisch ist es nicht das tiefsinnigste Album. Doch das braucht es auch nicht unbedingt zu sein, in diesen Sommertagen.

Musikalisch bietet die Band sehr viel unterschiedliche Stilrichtungen. Mal Hardcore, dann Punk und dann doch wieder ein fettes Nu-Metal-Brett. Wie könnte die Band auch anders bei diesen Musikern an den Äxten? Ein Traum! Immer Vollgas und am spitten, Powerflo halt! Wer also keine Lust mehr auf ICE-T’s Gejaule von einer schlechten Welt hat, sich aber trotzdem richtig viel Aktion im Haus halten will, der sollte sich diesen Silberling anhören. Es lohnt sich!!

Mögliche Reunion mit Christian´s Ex-Band

Da Chris häufiger in den letzten Monaten über eine mögliche Fear Factory Reunion angesprochen wurde, sagte er desweiteren:

I still feel like there might be a small chance. There’s been some communication but me and Raymond don’t really hold the cards, so they need to come to us and be like, ‘All right. Let’s make this happen, let’s fix all this.
