FRONT ROW WARRIORS (Facebook) liefern zwei Jahre nach ihrem super gelungenen Einstand mit „Wheels Of Fortune“ (Review) nun die nächste Ladung melodischen Metals. „Running Out Of Time“ heißt das neue Werk und ist vollgepackt mit 11 Songs, die euch begeistern wollen. Dann wollen wir mal sehen, ob ihnen das gelingt.

Seinerzeit hatte ich beim Debüt den Charme der 80’er Jahre gelobt. Dies ist dem Sound zum Glück erhalten geblieben und auch sonst behält man den tollen Sound bei. Soll heißen, dass FRONT ROW WARRIORS immer noch ein Händchen für detailverliebte atmosphärische Songs haben, die sich sofort im Kopf festsetzen. Das hat sicherlich auch mit der hervorragenden Sängerin Elkie Gee, die wie gewohnt mit viel Herzblut und Charisma den Songs mit ihrer Stimme einen unverwechselbaren Charakter verleiht. Ich schätze sie sehr.

„Turn The Tide“ als Eröffnungstrack legt die Messlatte direkt sehr hoch an. Mit flottem Tempo und eindringlichem Riffing beginnt die Reise. Es geht also recht hart los, was für mich natürlich gar kein Problem darstellt. Der Song rüttelt auf und peitscht an, was der Message des Songs natürlich zu Gute kommt. Die gewohnte Eingängigkeit findet sich im Refrain wieder.

Anschließend folgt ein Instrumentaltrack, der DEEP PURPLE Vibes versprüht, wenn ein feines Gitarrensolo durch sphärische Synthies untermalt wird. Nahtlos findet eine Überleitung zum Song „The Holy“ statt, bei dem man sofort beim Einsetzen der Synthies Erinnerungen an die 80’er Jahre aufkommen. Den Song würde ich in die Kategorie Powerballade einordnen, die durchaus ihren liebvollen Reiz hat.

Genug ausgeruht. „Cast A Spell“ drückt wieder mehr aufs Tempo und entzündet bei mir ein heißes Feuer der Begeisterung. Ein wahnsinnig toll arrangierter Song, der mich voll mitnimmt. Die Bridge zum Refrain ist wunderbar gelungen, der Refrain geht umgehend in Fleisch und Blut über. Und auch der balladeske Part holt mich voll ab. Ein imposantes Beispiel für den fantastischen Gesang, dem hier die Möglichkeit gegeben wird sich mit viel Power und Gefühl zu entfalten.

Auch wenn Songs wie „New Horizons“ mich nicht so dermaßen mitreißen wie andere, so liegt das nicht an den handwerklichen Fähigkeiten, sondern nur an meinem Geschmack. Denn jeder Song ist wieder mit viel Liebe zum Detail arrangiert worden und jeder Hörer wird dies bestätigen. Jeder wird auf diesem Album seine ganz persönlichen Favoriten finden.

„Rise Against“ ist wieder ein Song der härteren Machart mit schönen Solos von Gitarre und Keybord. Das düstere „Don’t Think The Night Is Over“ geht dann einen ganz anderen Weg, der vor allem gesanglich für angenehme Abwechslung sorgt und mit einem coolen Refrain daherkommt. Nicht umsonst hat der Song aufgrund seines komplexeren Aufbaus eine Spielzeit von über fünf Minuten.

Hinter „Seems Like A Paradise“ versteckt sich dann eine waschechte Ballade, welche recht einfach gehalten ist und hauptsächlich vom wunderschönen Gesang lebt. Mit „Heartbreaker“ schließt sich wieder ein echte Stimmungskanone an, den ich mir live wunderbar vorstellen kann. Den Refrain kann jeder sofort aus vollem Halse mitsingen. Und mit „Front Row Warriors“ schließt man das Album würdig ab, obwohl ich mir bei dem selbstbetilten Track etwas mehr Schmackes gewünscht hätte.

Fazit

FRONT ROW WARRIORS sind eine wunderbare Band mit einem individuellen attraktiven Sound, mit dem man sich von der Masse abhebt. Diesen Sound kann man auch auf „Running Out Of Time“ ausgiebig genießen, denn die Songs sind allesamt mal wieder super gelungen. Man geht sogar stellenweise noch mehr aus sich heraus und schmiedet den Sound mit härterem Stahl, was die Band für meinen Geschmack gerne noch in mehr Songs hätte verarbeiten können. Glücklicherweise sind die wohlklingenden Melodien und diese besondere Atmosphäre nach wie vor erhalten geblieben. Handwerklich sind FRONT ROW WARRIORS über jeden Zweifel erhaben und der Gesang von Elkie ist schlichtweg wie gewohnt wunderbar.

FRONT ROW WARRIORS(Facebook) now deliver the next batch of melodic metal two years after their super successful debut with „Wheels Of Fortune“ (Review) . „Running Out Of Time“ is the name of the new album and it’s packed with 11 songs that are want to entertain you. Let’s see if they succeed.

Last time I had praised the charm of the 80s on the debut. Fortunately, the great sound has been maintained. In other words, FRONT ROW WARRIORS still have a knack for creating detailed, atmospheric songs that immediately stick in your head. This is certainly also due to the excellent singer Elkie Gee, who, as usual, gives the songs an unmistakable character with her voice, full of heart and charisma. I really appreciate her.

The opening track „Turn The Tide“ immediately sets the level very high. The journey begins with a brisk tempo and insistent riffing. So it starts quite hard, which of course is pleasing to me. The song whips you up, which benefits the message of the song. The usual catchiness is found again in the chorus.

This is followed by an instrumental track that exudes DEEP PURPLE vibes when a fine guitar solo is accompanied by spherical synths. There is a seamless transition to the song „The Holy“, which immediately brings back memories of the 80s when the synths kick in. I would classify this song as a power ballad, which certainly has its own charming appeal.

Enough rest. „Cast A Spell“ picks up the pace again and ignites a hot fire of joy in me. It’s an incredibly well arranged song that really gets me going. The bridge to the chorus is wonderfully successful, the chorus immediately becomes second nature. And the balladic part also really gets me. An impressive example of the fantastic vocals, which are given the opportunity to unfold with a lot of power and emotion.

Even if songs like „New Horizons“ don’t carry me away as much as others, it’s not because of the craftsmanship, but just because of my personal taste. Because every song has once again been arranged with great attention to detail and every listener will confirm this. Everyone will find their own personal favorites on this album.

„Rise Against“ is another song of the heavier variety with beautiful guitar and keyboard solos. The gloomy „Don’t Think The Night Is Over“ then takes a completely different path, providing pleasant variety, especially vocally, and featuring a cool chorus. It is not for nothing that the song has a playing time of over five minutes due to its more complex structure.

Behind „Seems Like A Paradise“ is a genuine ballad, which is kept quite simple and lives mainly from the beautiful vocals. „Heartbreaker“ is another rousing tune that I can imagine playing live. Everyone can sing along to the chorus at the top of their lungs. And the song „Front Row Warriors“ brings the album to a worthy close, although I would have liked a bit more brisk hardness in this track.

Conclusion

FRONT ROW WARRIORS are a wonderful band with an individual, attractive sound that makes them stand out from the crowd. This sound can also be enjoyed extensively on „Running Out Of Time“, as the songs are once again all very well done. In some places, the band goes even further and forges the sound with harder steel, which I think the band could have used in more songs. Fortunately, the wonderful melodies and this special atmosphere are again part of the journey. The craftsmanship of FRONT ROW WARRIORS is of high quality and Elkie’s vocals are fantastic as usual.

Deutschen Thrash Metal mit Geschichte bekommen wir von SODOM. Die Formation im Mastermind Tom Angelripper hat jüngst die neue Single „Taphephobia“ (der Begriff bezeichnet die Angst, lebendig begraben zu werden) herausgebracht. Die Nummer wird auch einen Platz auf dem am 27.06.2025 erscheinenden kommenden Studioalbum „The arsonist“ haben. Hier kommt der Song für euch:

Heavy Metal aus Chile gibt es von der fünfköpfigen Combo IRON SPELL. Die Band will am 25.07.2025 ihr zweites Studioalbum mit dem Titel „From the grave“ herausbringen. Vorab hat man jetzt schon den Song „Sorceress“ für uns. Musik ab:

Aus den USA bzw. Mexico stammen ANIMAL RAGE. Jetzt haben wir mal wieder ein Debütalbum als Thema. Es wurde von den Metallern NIGHTSTEEL aus Griechenland erschaffen. Die selbst betitelte Scheibe ist mittlerweile im Handel erhältlich, wir hatten euch das Release ja vorab angekündigt. Heute wollen wir mit „Warlord’s betrayal“ noch einen Song nachlegen. Aus Norddeutschland stammen die Power Metaller von MOB RULES. Die sechsköpfige Truppe visiert für den 22.08.2025 das Release ihrer neuen Langrille namens „Rise of the ruler“ an. Es gibt doch einige interessante Sachen aus den eigenen Landen. So wechseln wir nach Stuttgart und damit in den Süden der Republik und stellen euch einen Song namens „Turn the tide“ vor. CLASSIC/BLUES ROCK – ROCK ‚N‘ ROLL- HARD ROCK – HEAVY ROCK

Willkommen beim ersten Teil meiner METALHEADs Toplist 2023. Ich möchte euch meine persönlichen Favoriten aus den unzähligen Veröffentlichungen des Rock und Metal präsentieren. Auch wenn ich versuche einen Überblick zu behalten, so ist das bei der Masse an Releases schier unmöglich, vor allem wenn man sich in fast allen Genres wohlfühlt. Von daher sind mir bestimmt auch einige tolle Alben durch die Lappen gegangen. Ich hoffe einfach, dass ihr euch einige Anregungen rausfiltern könnt und wünsche euch viel Spaß beim Stöbern.

Es gibt so dermaßen viele Stilrichungen im Rock und Metal, dass es manchmal schwierig ist, Bands in gewisse Schubladen zu stecken. Oft verwischen die Grenzen zwischen verschiedenen Genres, was ich allerdings sehr begrüße, denn es führt zu noch mehr, und mitunter sogar neuen musikalischen Erfahrungen. Daher möge man mir verzeihen, wenn ich Bands in eine Kategorie packe, die vielleicht nicht 100%ig passt und ihr diese eventuell woanders positionieren würdet.

CLASSIC/ BLUES ROCK

GHOST HOUNDS

aus den U.S.A. sind eine fette Nummer im Rock Business. Die Truppe aus Pittsburgh konnten dieses Jahr mit dem Album „First Last Time“ begeistern. Sänger Tré Nation hat einfach die perfekte Stimme, um den quirligen Rock zu bedienen. Er hat das gewisse Etwas in der Stimme und weiß damit auch perfekt umzugehen.

„First Last Time“ von den GHOST HOUNDS (Facebook) bietet durch und durch bestechende Songs, welche auch starke Country Vibes aufleben lassen. Dafür wären z.B. die Songs „Here No More“ oder das super flotte „Hot Dog“ ein gutes Beispiel. Selbstverständlich macht dabei ein Cover des Klassikers „Country Roads“ auch eine gute Figur. Man kann sich aber darüber hinaus an fetzigen Gitarren in kraftvollen Songs wie beispielsweise „Dirty Angel“ oder „Make It Shake“ erfreuen. Ich liebe diesen Flair mit dem Klavier und Streichern, die dem ganzen noch mehr Atmosphäre verleihen. Es nimmt mich einfach mit. Es gibt eine breite Palette an Songs, die viele Facetten des Rock ausleuchten und somit einen großen Unterhaltungswert haben.

TÚSK

Túsk (Facebook / Bandcamp) aus Irland konnten in diesem Jahr die Veröffentlichung ihres selbstbetitelten Debütalbums feiern. Mir hat sofort diese authentische lebendige Art gefallen, welche mich sofort gepackt hat. Es ist ein wirklich cooles Album, dass man sich anhören sollte. Die Gitarren sind in permanenter Action und peitschen den Sound mit geilen wilden Solos zusätzlich auf. Sänger Jamie brilliert dazu passend mit einer sehr starken inbrünstigen Gesangsleistung. TÚSK kommen mit einem sehr beeindruckenden Debütalbum daher und präsentieren allerfeinsten Blues Rock. Sie bieten eine feine Palette an qualitativ hochwertigen Songs, die handwerklich und technisch über jeden Zweifel erhaben sind.

BAD TOUCH

BAD TOUCH (Facebook) aus England kommen mit einer satten Ladung guter Laune daher, die sich in jeder Note des Albums „Bittersweet Satisfaction“ widerspiegelt und ein Feuerwerk guter Laune ist. Sie haben sich schön weiterentwickelt und knallen mal eben 10 super Kracher aus dem Ärmel. Von lässig cool, über modern eingängig bis hin zu mitreißend ekstatisch gibt es hier das komplette Verwöhnprogramm. Dieses Album lässt auch an dunkelsten Tagen die Sonne scheinen. (Review)

BAD TOUCH sind für mich einer der positivsten Bands, die ich kenne. Sie sind nach wie vor ein Garant für erstklassigen Classic Rock. Auf „Bittersweet Satisfaction“ präsentieren sie sich noch reifer und vielseitiger.

Das Album „Satanic Age“ von LUCIFER STAR MACHINE (Facebook) hat mich vom ersten Song an direkt abgeholt und mich bis zum letzten nicht mehr losgelassen. Die Songs haben mich hart durchgewirbelt. Einerseits wetzt Euch die Band mit einer groben harten Körnung das Fleisch von den Knochen, können aber andererseits mit Feinschliff geile Melodien in die Songs fräsen, in die man sich einfach verlieben muss. LUCIFER STAR MACHINE haben mit ihrem Album „Satanic Age“ ein brandheißes Eisen im Höllenfeuer. Da dreht der Belzebub völlig durch. Diese teuflische Party mit dämonischgeilen Songs ist der absolute Knaller. Der Sound von LUCIFER STAR MACHINE hat alles, was ich am Rock ’n‘ Roll liebe.

Tja, was sollte da noch kommen? Eigentlich war ich mir sicher, dass das keiner mehr übertreffen könnte, aber dann kamen halt PHIL CAMPBELL AND THE BASTARD SONS (Facebook) mit ihrem Album „Kings Of The Asylum“ um die Ecke. PHIL CAMPBELL AND THE BASTARD SONS haben ihrem Sound sozusagen ne Nitro-Einspritzung verpasst. Fehlzündungen kann ich hier absolut keine feststellen. Denn „Kings Of The Asylum“ geht ausnahmslos in die Vollen und bietet dabei ein top ausgearbeitetes Programm an fantastischen Songs. Deshalb küre ich mit einem Hauch Vorsprung das Album „Kings Of The Asylum“ zum Rock ‚N‘ Roll Album des Jahres. (Review)

Das Album „Kings Of The Asylum“ hat Eier! Es brennt für den heißen old school Rock ’n‘ Roll! Wer da nicht mitgerissen wird, der liegt schon unter der Erde.

FORMOSA (Facebook) sind mittlerweile sehr erfolgreich unterwegs und haben sogar ein eigenes Festival ins Leben gerufen, nämlich das ‚FORMOSA-Bierfest‘! Und das erfreut sich immer größerer Beliebtheit im Ruhrgebiet. (siehe Bericht 2022 und Bericht 2023). Da kommen die Bands sogar gerne mal aus dem Ausland angereist, um ein Teil davon zu sein. Mittlerweile sind wir von ‚metal-heads.de‘ sogar offizielle Medienpartner dieses tollen Events.

Aber nun kurz zu dem aktuellen Album „Bittersweet“ (Review). FORMOSA haben sich merklich weiterentwickelt und schütteln durchweg tolle Songs aus dem Ärmel.

FORMOSA schenken uns mit ihrem Album „Bittersweet“ ein wirklich famoses Rockalbum. Der Sound hat sich merklich entwickelt und ist heaviger geworden. Großartige catchige Melodien sind Grundpfeiler des Albums, so dass alle Songs mit Leichtigkeit an Euren Rocksynapsen andocken und dort Glückshormone freisetzen.

„Living On Blade“

RAVENSTINE

RAVENSTINE (Facebook) waren für mich eine Megaüberraschung. Als internationale Band (gegründet im COVID 19-Lockdown) sorgten sie mit ihrem selbstbetitelten Debüt für Aufsehen in der Szene. Seitdem konnten sie ihre Fanschar stetig vergrößern. Dies ist auch kein Wunder, denn die musikalische Qualität ist über jeden Zweifel erhaben. Es werden durchweg knallige Rocksongs geboten, die jeweils ihren eigenen Charme haben und unter anderem mit kuriosen Ideen daherkommen (z.B. „Still Alive“). Ein mitreißendes und bissiges Album! Somit hat diese Band ein Platz in der Bestenliste 2023 sehr wohl verdient. (Review / Interview) Und es gibt tolle Neuigkeiten! Denn schon am 12. Januar wird das neue Album „2024“ präsentiert. Dazu gibt es bald ein Review hier auf ‚metal-heads.de‘.

Das ist Musik, die sofort Adrenalin ins Herz schießt und Glücksgefühle auslöst. Diese Band und ihre Musik muss man lieben!

„Ravenstine“

TEMPLE BALLS

TEMPLE BALLS (Facebook) aus Schweden haben am Ende des Jahres mit ihrem Album „Avalanche“ noch mal richtig einen rausgehauen. Die fetzigen Hardrock-Sounds werden mit schönen Hooks und geilen Mitsing-Refrains veredelt und so entsteht folgendes:

Mit klassischen Zutaten (aus den 80’er Jahren) zaubern die Meister von TEMPLE BALLS eine exquisite Rockmischung, die süchtig macht. Es ist diese Art Album, das man von vorne bis hinten verschlingt und gleich noch mal von vorne beginnt. Diese mitreißende Rock’n’Roll-Musik ist wie geschaffen für Partys!

„Trap“

JELUSICK

Wenn es um technische Vollendung geht, dann ist man bei JELUSICK (Facebook) genau richtig. Dino Jelusick ist nicht nur ein genialer Sänger, sondern auch ein toller Songwriter. Daran besteht wohl kein Zweifel. Mit einem hohen Anspruch an sich selbst und seinen Mitstreitern wurde nun das Debüt „Follow The Blind Man“ veröffentlicht. Lediglich die drei Balladen fallen bei mir hinter den mitreißenden Songs zurück und wirken nicht so spektakulär wie die restlichen mitreißenden Songs, welche wirklich verdammt klasse sind und eindeutig mit zu den besten Rocksongs gehören, die in diesem Jahr veröffentlicht wurden. Es sind mitreißende Songs entstanden, die es gehörig krachen lassen, aber auch zum Teil einen progressive Ader haben. Dabei liefert nicht nur Dino Jelusick als Top-Sänger eine tolle Show. Die gesamte Band spielt (technisch) auf einem hohen Level, so dass etliche ausgezeichnete Rocksongs geboten werden.

„Acid Rain“

Diese Band hat für mich das HARDROCK-Album des Jahres erschaffen. „Wheels Of Fortune“ hat mich einfach mit seinem 80’er Jahre-Charme verzaubert. Auf dem Album schenken FRONT ROW WARRIORS (Facebook) uns nicht nur handwerklich einwandfreie Songs, sondern sie versprühen ihren ganz eigenen Charme, an dem Sängerin Elkie Gee einen großen Anteil hat. Sie hat eine tolle Stimme und liefert hier eine mehr als überzeugende Vorstellung. Die Songs loten auch die Grenzen zum Melodic/Heavy Metal aus. Hört euch dieses verrückte Keyboard-Solo in Kombination mit dem großartigen Gitarrensolo bei „Wheel Of Fortune“ an: !!!! Und dieser Refrain ist einfach zum Niederknien! Ich mag sogar die Power-Ballade „Love Is Not A Game“ mit ihrem großartigen Refrain. (Review / Interview)

FRONT ROW WARRIORS liefern mit „Wheel Of Fortune“ ein perfektes Album ab. Hier gibt es nichts zu kritisieren. Dabei offenbart sich ein buntes Fest individueller Songs, die mit viel Liebe zum Detail und einem geschmeidigen Händchen für atmosphärische Elemente komponiert worden sind. Darüber hinaus werden die Songs handwerklich von der gesamten Band grandios mit viel Können gerockt. Sängerin Elkie setzt dem Ganzen mit ihrer charismatischen Stimme und ihrer Sangeskunst die Krone auf.

Der Sound ist direkt und rau mit Ecken und Kanten. CARBELLION können auch mal den Fuß vom Gas nehmen, verlassen die Piste und fahren querfeldein über Stock und Stein. Alles in allem ein verdammt starkes Rennen, was CARBELLION hier abliefern. (Review)

Noch mal eine Band aus den U.S.A.! TEXAS HIPPIE COALATION (Facebook) sind nun wahrlich keine Unbekannten mehr in die Szene. Mit ihrem fetten Rocksound bringen sie ordentlihc Schwung in die Bude. Das neue Album heißt „The Name Lives On“. Bretthart und schwer grooven sich die Songs durch das Album. Big Dad Ritch am Mikro hat eine krasse Präsenz und lässt keinen Zweifel daran, dass er der richtige Mann für den Job ist. Seine kraftvolle Stimme ist so rau und massiv wie Felsformationen in der texanischen Wüste. (Review)

The new album is called „The Name Lives On“. The songs groove hard and heavy through the album. Big Dad Ritch on the mic has a blatant presence and leaves no doubt that he is the right man for the job. His powerful voice is as rough and massive as rock formations in the Texan desert. (Review)

„Hard Habit“

Tatsächlich hat aber die schwedische Band S.O.R.M. (Facebook) für mich das Album des Jahres im Bereich Heavy Rock auf den Markt gebracht. „Under My Skin“ heißt die Wundertüte mit allerlei Krachern auf der Scheibe, wobei es auch mal gefühlvoll zur Sache geht. Micke Holm hat eine geniale Stimme, die unweigerlich an Blackie Lawless von W.A.S.P. erinnert, nur noch kräftiger. Das Trio rockt einen verdammt starken Sound. Sie driften mit „I Die For My Rock N Roll“ auch gerne mal in der Hardrock Schiene und hauen damit mal eben eine geniale Party Hymne raus oder man gibt sich mal emotional und erschafft eine gefühlvolle Darbietung mit „Under My Skin“. Ansonsten gibt es haufenweise Überraschungen, die allesamt überzeugen. Dabei geht es auch verdammt heavy zur Sache. (Review)

S.O.R.M schicken mit „Under My Skin“ ein astreines Heavy Rock Album ins Rennen. Es ist ein „Hellride“, der auch mal „Under The Skin“ geht. Es wird beste Unterhaltung geboten. S.O.R.M zeigen dabei verschiedene Facetten und haben dabei ihren ganz eigenen charakteristischen Sound, der sie von der Masse abhebt. Die grandiose Stimme von Micke Holm ist ohnehin unverwechselbar.

Welcome to the first part of my METALHEADs Toplist 2023. I would like to present you my personal favorites from the countless releases of Rock and Metal. Even if I try to keep an overview, it’s almost impossible with the mass of releases, especially if you feel comfortable in almost all genres. And that’s why I’m sure some great albums have slipped through my fingers. I just hope you have fun browsing through my toplists.

There are so many styles in rock and metal that it’s sometimes difficult to pigeonhole bands. Often the boundaries between different genres become blurred, which I welcome, because it leads to even more, and sometimes even new musical experiences. So please forgive me if I put bands in a category that might not fit 100% and you might put them somewhere else.

CLASSIC/ BLUES ROCK

GHOST HOUNDS

from the U.S.A. are a big name in the rock business. The band from Pittsburgh impressed audiences this year with their album „First Last Time“. Singer Tré Nation simply has the perfect voice to deliver this kind of rock music. He has the perfect voice for that and he knows how to use it.

„First Last Time“ by GHOST HOUNDS (Facebook) offers thoroughly captivating songs, which also bring strong country vibes to life. The songs „Here No More“ or the super rousing „Hot Dog“ are good examples of this. Of course, a cover of the classic „Country Roads“ also cuts a fine figure. But you can also enjoy groovy guitars in powerful songs such as „Dirty Angel“ or „Make It Shake“. I love this flair with piano and strings, which give the whole thing even more special atmosphere that carrys me away. There is a wide range of songs that illuminate many facets of rock and therefore have great entertainment value.

„Last Train To Nowhere“

TRÚSK

Túsk (Facebook / Bandcamp) from Ireland celebrated the release of their self-titled debut album this year. I immediately liked their authentic, lively style, which grabbed me straight away. It’s a really cool album that you should listen to. The guitars are in constant action and whip up the sound with awesome, wild solos. Singer Jamie shines with a very strong, fervent vocal performance. (Review)

TRÚSK come along with a very impressive debut album and present the finest blues rock. They offer a fine range of high-quality songs that are technically and technically beyond reproach.

BAD TOUCH

from England come along with a full load of good humor, which is reflected in every note of the album „Bittersweet Satisfaction“. This is a firework of good mood. BAD TOUCH (Facebook) have evolved nicely and just bang out 10 great hits. From casually cool, to catchy modern, to rousingly ecstatic, there’s the complete pampering program here. This album makes the sun shine even on the darkest of days. (Review)

For me, BAD TOUCH are one of the most positive bands I know. They are still a guarantee for first-class classic rock. On „Bittersweet Satisfaction“ they present themselves even more mature and versatile.

LUCIFER STAR MACHINE (Facebook) is one of them. The album „Satanic Age“ picked me up right from the first song and didn’t let go until the last. The songs gave me a hard time. On the one hand, the band grinds the flesh off your bones with a rough, hard grit, but on the other hand, they are able to mill great melodies into the songs with a fine touch that you can’t help but fall in love with. LUCIFER STAR MACHINE have with their album „Satanic Age“ a red hot iron in the hellfire. There the devil himself goes completely crazy. This devilish party with demonically horny songs is the absolute blast.

PHIL CAMPBELL AND THE BASTARD SONS

Actually, I was sure that nobody could top LUCIFER STAR MACHINE, but then PHIL CAMPBELL AND THE BASTARD SONS (Facebook) came around the corner with their album „Kings Of The Asylum“. PHIL CAMPBELL AND THE BASTARD SONS have given their sound a nitro injection, so to speak. I can’t detect any misfires here. Because „Kings Of The Asylum“ goes all out without exception and offers a top-notch program of fantastic songs. That’s why I’m crowning „Kings Of The Asylum“ the rock ’n‘ roll album of the year.(Review)

The album „Kings Of The Asylum“ has big balls! It burns for the hot old school Rock ’n‘ Roll! Who is not carried away, is already under the earth. But even that should not be enough. Because for that sound even the dead rise from the graves and let their bare bones rattle and rock. Great album!

FORMOSA (Facebook) are now very successful on the road and have even launched their own festival, the ‚FORMOSA beer festival‘! And this is becoming increasingly popular in the German Ruhr region. (see report 2022 and report 2023). Bands even like to come from abroad to be a part of it. We at ‚metal-heads.de‘ are now official media partners of this great event since this year.

The current album „Bittersweet“ (review) is a beautiful pearl. FORMOSA have developed noticeably and have consistently come up with great songs.

FORMOSA schenken uns mit ihrem Album „Bittersweet“ ein wirklich famoses Rockalbum. Der Sound hat sich merklich entwickelt und ist heaviger geworden. Großartige catchige Melodien sind Grundpfeiler des Albums, so dass alle Songs mit Leichtigkeit an Euren Rocksynapsen andocken und dort Glückshormone freisetzen.

„Living On A Blade“

RAVENSTINE

RAVENSTINE (Facebook) were a mega surprise for me. As an international band (founded during the COVID 19 lockdown) they caused a stir in the scene with their self-titled debut. Since then, they have steadily increased their fan base. And it’s no wonder, because the musical quality is beyond reproach. The band consistently delivers banging rock songs, each with its own charm and some curious ideas (e.g. „Still Alive“). A rousing and biting album! So this band definitely deserves a place in the 2023 best list. (Review / Interview) And there’s some great news! Because the new album „2024“ will be presented on January 12.

waren für mich eine Megaüberraschung. RAVENSTINE (Facebook) als internationale Band (gegründet im COVID 19-Lockdown) sorgte mit ihrem selbstbetitelten Debüt für Aufsehen in der Szene. Seitdem konnten sie ihre Fanschar stetig vergrößern. Dies ist auch kein Wunder, denn die musikalische Qualität ist über jeden Zweifel erhaben. Es werden durchweg knallige Rocksongs geboten, die jeweils ihren eigenen Charme haben und unter anderem mit kuriosen Ideen daherkommen (z.B. „Still Alive“). Ein mitreißendes und bissiges Album! Somit hat diese Band ein Platz in der Bestenliste 2023 sehr wohl verdient. (Review / Interview)

Das ist Musik, die sofort Adrenalin ins Herz schießt und Glücksgefühle auslöst. Diese Band und ihre Musik muss man lieben!

TEMPLE BALLS (Facebook) from Sweden really hit it out of the park at the end of the year with their album „Avalanche“. The groovy hard rock sounds are refined with beautiful hooks and great sing-along choruses, resulting in the following:

With classic ingredients (from the 80’s), the masters of TEMPLE BALLS conjure up an exquisite rock mixture that is addictive. It’s the kind of album that you devour from beginning to end and start all over again. This rousing rock’n’roll music is made for parties!

„Trap“

JELUSICK

When it comes to technical perfection, JELUSICK (Facebook) is the right choice. Dino Jelusick is not only a brilliant singer, but also a great songwriter. There is no doubt about that. The debut „Follow The Blind Man“ has now been released with high standards for himself and his fellow musicians. Only the three ballads fall behind the rousing songs for me and don’t seem as spectacular as the other rousing songs, which are really damn great and are clearly among the best rock songs released this year. The result is thrilling songs that really let it rip, but also have a progressive streak in some cases. Dino Jelusick is not the only top singer to deliver a great show. The entire band plays (technically) at a high level, resulting in a number of excellent rock songs.

„Acid Rain“

This band has created the Hardrock album of the year for me. „Wheels Of Fortune“ simply enchanted me with its 80s charm. On the album, FRONT ROW WARRIORS (Facebook) not only give us songs with impeccable craftsmanship, but they also exude their very own charm, which singer Elkie Gee plays a big part in. She has a great voice and delivers a more than convincing performance here. The songs also explore the boundaries of melodic/heavy metal. I even like the power ballad „Love Is Not A Game“ with its magnificent chorus. Listen to this crazy keyboard solo in combination with the great guitar solo on „Wheel Of Fortune“!!!! And this chorus is simply to kneel down! (Review / Interview)

FRONT ROW WARRIORS deliver a perfect album with „Wheel Of Fortune“. There is nothing to criticize here. It is a colorful feast of individual songs that have been composed with great attention to detail and a deft touch for atmospheric elements. In addition, the songs are rocked by the entire band with great skill. Singer Elkie tops it all off with her charismatic voice and singing skills.

The sound is raw with rough edges. CARBELLION can also take their foot off the gas, leave the track and drive cross-country over hill and dale. All in all, CARBELLION deliver a damn strong race here.(Review)

CARBELLION rock out with a whopping 10 bangers on their album „Weapons Of Choice“. Their weapons of choice are screeching guitar leads, rock-hard riffs, a powerful grooving bass, lively drums and a dirty rock voice on the mic.

The Swedish band S.O.R.M. (Facebook) has actually released the album of the year for me in Heavy Rock. „Under My Skin“ is the name of the grab bag with all kinds of bangers, which also has some soulful moments. Micke Holm has a brilliant voice that inevitably reminds me of Blackie Lawless from W.A.S.P., only even more powerful. The trio rocks a damn strong sound. With „I Die For My Rock N Roll“, they also like to drift into the hard rock genre and come up with an ingenious party anthem or get emotional and create a soulful performance with „Under My Skin“. Apart from that, there are plenty of surprises, all of which are convincing. And it’s also pretty damn heavy. (Review)

With „Under My Skin“, S.O.R.M are sending a pure Heavy Rock album into the race. It is a „Hellride“ that also goes „Under The Skin“. This is best entertainment . S.O.R.M show different facets and have their very own characteristic sound that makes them stand out from the crowd. Micke Holm’s magnificent voice is unmistakable anyway.

Beeindruckender Start der Band

MH: Herzlich Willkommen Elkie von FRONT ROW WARRIORS zum Interview bei ‚metal-heads.de‘! Euer Album „Wheel Of Fortune“ hat bei mir einen echt starken Eindruck hinterlassen. Für mich ein perfektes Album, was die Magie der 80′ er Jahre fantastisch einfängt.

Sehr beeindruckend finde ich ebenfalls die Tatsache, dass Ihr kurz nach Bandgründung im Jahr 2021 als beste deutsche Hardrock-Band vom Pop- und Rockmusikverband gewählt wurdet. Und im Jahr 2022 wurde Elkie mit dem Song „Dystopian Time“ als beste deutsche Hardrock-Sängerin gekürt. Warum habt Ihr Euch bei dem Wettbewerb ausgerechnet mit dem Song „Dystopian Time“ beworben?

EG: Danke für das Interview und deine Zeit, freut uns sehr, dass dir unser Album gefällt, das nun endlich am 9.6. erschienen ist. Das mit den Auszeichnungen hat sich in der Corona Zeit ergeben als wir nach und nach die Songs produziert hatten, mit „Chasing Shadows“ haben wir uns 2021 beworben und waren ganz aus dem Häuschen als wir diese tolle Auszeichnung erhielten. „Dystopian Time“ ist einer meiner Favoriten auf unserem Album und ich war neugierig auf die Bewertung. Das Ergebnis hat uns dann umgehauen.

Die Rolle von Gastsänger Todd Michael Hall

MH: Bei dem Song hat Todd Michael Hall als Gastsänger (Band RIOT V) mitgewirkt. Hat das einen besonderen Hintergrund?

EG: Ganz sicher kein Namedropping, was man vielleicht vermuten würde.  Er ist ein fantastischer Sänger und langjähriger guter Freund, der mich gesanglich unheimlich inspiriert hat und auch animierte, nach Ampyre (ehem. Band der Sängerin) wieder musikalisch tätig zu werden. Er war auch während der gesamten Produktionsphase immer beratend an Bord und mit dem Duett hat er mir einen Herzenswunsch erfüllt, wir sind sehr stolz darauf ihn dabei zu haben.  Wer die Chance hat, sollte sich unbedingt ein Riot V Konzert mit ihm ansehen.

MH: So eine Auszeichnung schüttelt man ja auch als erfahrene Musikergilde nicht mal eben aus dem Ärmel, oder? Welche Türen öffnet man sich mit solchen Auszeichnungen?

EG: Na ja, handwerklich haben wir schon definitiv tolle Leute an Bord und das hilft etwas weiter. Die ganz großen Türen haben sich aber dadurch noch nicht geöffnet.

Label ROCK OF ANGELS RECORDS

MH: Hat es auch dabei geholfen, beim Label ROCK OF ANGELS RECORDS einen Deal zu bekommen?

EG: Das kann ich gar nicht genau sagen, ich hatte bereits während den Aufnahmen Kontakt zu Akis Kosmidis, als er sich die Songs angehört hat gab er uns sofort grünes Licht.

MH: Ihr seid sogar kürzlich nach Griechenland zum Label gereist. Dort fand eine Party statt? Wie war es dort?

EG: Ja, vor drei Wochen fand dort das 10-jährige Jubiläum des Labels statt und wir releasten an diesem Wochenende auch unser Debüt, wir hatten also allen Grund der Welt dahin zu fahren. Was wir dort erlebt haben würde hier jeden Rahmen sprengen, so viel aber sei gesagt, die Gastfreundschaft und Herzlichkeit beim Label ist beeindruckend und hatte etwas filmreifes…

Der Auftritt von Ashes of Ares im renommierten eightballclub in Thessaloniki war ein Highlight, eine solche Atmosphäre erlebt man nicht so häufig.  Wir haben viele beeindruckende Musiker und tolle Menschen auf unserem Trip nach Griechenland kennengelernt, das war schon etwas ganz Besonderes.  

Entstehung der Band

MH: FRONT ROW WARRIORS sind eine junge Band, allerdings mit erfahrenen Musikern. Anders wäre ein solch grandioses Album auch nicht möglich gewesen. Natürlich wird es jeden interessieren, wie es zu Eurer Zusammenkunft kam. Könntet Ihr das kurz skizzieren?  Wer kam auf die Idee? Kanntet ihr Euch schon länger persönlich?  

EG: Die Idee eine neue Band zu gründen geisterte schon lange in meinem Kopf herum. Es war klar, dass Jay-G (Sharon, Shining) an den Drums und Ritchie Seibel (Ivanhoe, Them) an den Keys sein würden. Auf ein Inserat schrieb uns unser Gitarrist Sorin Badin (Samsara, Crystal Maze) eine supernette Mail und schickte ein paar YouTube Videos mit, die uns sehr beeindruckt hatten.

Nach der ersten Session, bei der er uns sowohl spielerisch als auch menschlich sprichwörtlich weggefegt hatte, war für uns klar, dass er der Mann an der Gitarre sein würde. Timo Michels (Pump), unseren Bassisten kannten wir ebenfalls schon seit vielen Jahren und er musste auch nicht lange überredet werden. Im Sommer 2022 kam mit Stef Binnig-Gollub (Septagon)unser zweiter Gitarrist hinzu der wiederum ein alter Spezi von Ritchie ist und mit Sorin wunderbar harmoniert. Wir sind also keine gecastete Band, sondern wenn man so will sechs Freunde mit derselben Vision.

Die Albumproduktion

MH: Wie seid ihr dann an das Album herangegangen? Womit hat es begonnen? Worauf habt ihr den Focus gelegt? Wie sind die Songs entstanden?

EG: Zunächst haben wir die Songs im Proberaum kreiert, dann bei Roland Seidel die Vorproduktion aufgenommen. Jay-G. hat die Drums im Heimstudio eingespielt, alle anderen ihre Takes ebenfalls in den eigenen Studios und meinen Gesang habe ich bei Michael Bormann in dessen Studio in Duisburg aufgenommen der auch an den Chören beteiligt ist und einen tollen Job gemacht hat.

Wir wollten eine ordentliche Produktion mit nem amtlichen Sound haben und hatten das Glück, dass Achim Köhler, FOH von Avantasia, Hammerfall, Hooters, coronabedingt Zeit hatte und mal nicht um die Welt gereist ist….:)  Er hat das Ganze produziert und gemischt, final gemastert wurde das Ding von Patrick W. Engel.

Lieblingssongs

MH: Normalerweise hat jedes Bandmitglied immer seinen Lieblingstrack auf einem Album. Das hat meist ganz verschiedene Gründe. Wie sieht es denn bei Euch aus?

EG: Da kann ich jetzt nur für einen Teil der Band sprechen, bei mir sind es „Hell Awaits“, Dystopian time“, Ritchie liebt „Wasted life“, Jay G-„Wheel of Fortune“, Sorin mit Sicherheit „The Hunter“ aber es ist recht schwer, weil wir die Songs ja alle toll finden denn sonst wären sie nicht auf dem Debüt gelandet.

Fantasie & Magie

MH: Euer Cover-Artwork könnte mit seinen magischen Elementen auch ein Plakat für einen Fantasyfilm sein. Hältst Du Dich für einen fantasievollen Menschen? (Oft nimmt diese Fähigkeit im Laufe der Lebensjahre leider bei vielen Menschen ab.) Wo siehst Du noch magische Dinge in unserer Welt?

EG: Auf unser Coverartwork von Uwe Jarling sind wir richtig stolz. Er zeichnet unter anderem tatsächlich viele Fantasy Cover für Bücher, das Wheel haben wir  gemeinsam mit ihm herausgearbeitet. Er ist unglaublich kreativ und ein sehr netter Zeitgenosse.

Ich denke ich konnte mir die Fantasie recht gut bewahren und sie rettet mich immer wieder wenn es im Leben etwas schwieriger wird…  Magische Dinge gibt es an jeder Ecke, wir müssen uns nur den Blick darauf bewahren, das Lächeln eines Kindes, ein Schmetterling der vorbeifliegt, eine Biene die auf einer Blüte sitzt, Regenbogen, der Duft von frischem Heu, gute Bücher, und natürlich jede Menge guter Musik die ihre Magie entfaltet, wenn wir es zulassen und uns die Zeit dafür nehmen.

Rad des Schicksals

MH: Das Album heißt „Wheel Of Fortune“ (Rad des Schicksals). Was hat es damit auf sich? Worum geht es inhaltlich bei den Songs? Glaubst Du an höhere Mächte?

EG: Das Schicksals- oder Glücksrad… ich glaube schon an eine höhere Macht und auch daran, dass unser Schicksal in gewisser Weise vorbestimmt ist. Alles, was kommt, macht oft im Nachhinein erst Sinn und wenn ich an die letzten vier Jahre mit der Band und alles, was damit zusammenhängt, zurückdenke, dann bin ich sicher, dass es schon irgendwie eine Bestimmung war, diese zu gründen.

Meine Texte handeln von all den Dingen die mich umtreiben, von all den Kriegstreibern dieser Welt, sie sind durchaus mal sozialkritisch und nachdenklich aber ohne missionieren zu wollen. Natürlich spielt die Liebe und die Sehnsucht mit ihren vielen Gesichtern eine Rolle wie bei „Chasing Shadows“ oder „Wheel of Fortune“, aber auch Dinge wie unsere Endlichkeit….

In „Wasted Life“ habe ich den Tod meiner Mutter verarbeitet, der deshalb meine emotionalste Nummer ist. Bei „Dystopian time“ hat Todd auf meine Bitte die „Weissagung der Cree“ eingesprochen, auch Wahlspruch der US-amerikanischen Umweltbewegung, die mich in ihrer Aussage schon früh gefesselt hat weil sie so einfach und klar das in Worte fasst was wirklich zählt im Leben und wir leider so oft vergessen, das war auch die Grundlage für die Lyrics von „Dystopian time“.

Kinder der 80’er

MH: Wie eingangs bereits erwähnt, ist Euer Sound sehr stark an die 80′ er und frühen 90′ er Jahre angelehnt. Warum habt Ihr Euch gerade für diesen Sound entschieden? Was verbindet Ihr mit dem Rock- und Metalmusik der 80′ er und frühen 90′ er Jahre?

EG: Letzlich sind wir ja alle Kinder der 80er und 90er, und haben diese Musik in ihrer Blüte erleben dürfen, den Lebensstil der mit den frühen Musikvideos aus den USA herüberschwappte und natürlich alle diese begnadeten Gitarrengötter, die Hairmetal Zeiten und diesen positiven Vibe der bei Livekonzerten die Hallen zum Beben gebracht haben. Das alles wollten wir zurückhaben.

Veränderung in der Musikwelt

MH: Kommen wir von höheren Mächten wieder auf den Boden der Tatsachen zurück. Wie habt Ihr die Veränderung der Musikbranche in den letzten 20 Jahren wahrgenommen? Welche Entwicklungen sind für Euch besonders gravierend, sowohl im positiven als negativen Sinne? Ist es heutzutage leichter oder schwerer als früher seine Musik an die Leute zu bringen?

EG: Die Welt befindet sich ja in stetigem Wandel und alles Neue hat nicht immer nur Vorteile. Die Homestudios vereinfachen heute vieles, allerdings kann man es nicht mit der Magie eines Studioaufenthaltes von früher vergleichen, als die gesamte Band im Regieraum saß und mit dem Toningenieur heiße Debatten führte, das Bier ausging und es noch keine Lieferdienste gab…. Sicherlich sind die Entwicklungen in Sachen Streaming ein riesiges Thema, an dem wir leider alle nicht vorbeikommen und uns damit arrangieren müssen. Dass beispielsweise Vinyl wieder derart auf dem Vormarsch ist grenzt schon ein wenig an ein Wunder, und freut mich persönlich total.

Probleme im Live-Sektor

Was uns alle umtreibt ist die Entwicklung im Live Sektor, es wird für Newcomerbands immer schwerer an Konzerte zu kommen, ganz davon abgesehen, dass die Veranstalter oft kaum noch oder sehr geringe Gagen zahlen und die Anzahl der Clubs ständig abnimmt. Und leider auch die Vorverkäufe oft recht schleppend sind, wobei diese wiederum entscheidend sind für das Stattfinden vieler Konzerte.

Schade, dass sehr viele Leute immer noch lieber in die großen Arenen rennen wo sie ihre Künstler oft nur auf der Leinwand sehen können und horrende Eintrittspreise bezahlen, um dann gefühlt drei Stunden für ein Bier anzustehen. Das alles kann man so viel schöner und entspannter für wenig Geld haben und dabei noch viele neue tolle Bands kennenlernen.

MH: Wo wir gerade beim Thema sind… Ihr habt ein tolles Album am Start und wollt es sicherlich auch sehr gerne live präsentieren. Konntet ihr schon einige Auftritte absolvieren und was sind Euer Pläne diesbezüglich?

EG: Wir haben vor einigen Wochen unsere Feuertaufe gehabt und Michael Bormann´s Jaded Hard supportet. Das lief trotz des noch nicht erschienenen Albums und ohne Merch aber so gut, dass wir jetzt wo alles am Start ist, heiß darauf sind endlich den Proberaum gegen die Bühnen der Welt einzutauschen. Wir sind momentan mit einigen Veranstaltern von Festivals in Verhandlung. Es gibt auch schon tolle Zusagen für 2024 und etliche Pläne. Impressive start of the band

MH: Welcome to the interview at ‚metal-heads.de‘! Your album „Wheel Of Fortune“ has left a really strong impression on me. For me a perfect album, which captures the magic of the 80’s fantastically.

I am also very impressed by the fact that shortly after the band was founded in 2021 you were elected as the best German hard rock band by the Pop and Rock Music Association. And in 2022 Elkie was chosen as the best German hard rock singer with the song „Dystopian Time“. Why did you apply to the competition with the song „Dystopian Time“ of all things?

EG: Thank you for the interview and your time, we are very happy that you like our album, which is finally released on 9.6. The thing with the awards came up in the Corona time when we had produced the songs one by one, with „Chasing Shadows“ we applied in 2021 and we were quite excited when we received this great award. „Dystopian time“ is one of my favorites on our album and I was curious how it would be judged. Then the result blew us away.

Todd Michael Hall as a guest vocalist

MH: The song features Todd Michael Hall as a guest vocalist (band RIOT V). Does that have a special background?

EG: Definitely not name-dropping, which you might think. He is a fantastic singer and a good friend for many years, who inspired me vocally and also animated me to become musically active again after Ampyre (former band of the singer). He was also always on board during the entire production phase in an advisory capacity and with the duet he fulfilled a wish of my heart, we are very proud to have him on board. If you have the chance, you should definitely go and see a Riot V concert with him.

MH: Even as an experienced musician you don’t just shake an award like that out of your sleeve, do you? What doors do you open for yourself with such awards?

EG: Well, technically we definitely have great people on board and that helps a bit, but the really big doors haven’t opened yet.

Label ROCK OF ANGELS RECORDS

MH: Did it also help to get a deal with the label ROCK OF ANGELS RECORDS?

EG: I can’t say exactly, I was already in contact with Akis Kosmidis during the recordings, when he listened to the songs he immediately gave us the green light.

MH: You even recently traveled to Greece to the label. There was a party there? How was it there?

EG: Yes, three weeks ago the 10th anniversary of the label took place there and we also released our debut that weekend, so we had all the reason in the world to go there. What we experienced there would go beyond the scope of this article, but let’s just say that the hospitality and warmth at the label is impressive and had something cinematic…
The gig of Ashes of Ares in the renowned eightballclub in Thessaloniki was a highlight, you don’t experience such an atmosphere very often. We met a lot of impressive musicians and great people on our trip to Greece, that was really special.

Formation of the band

MH: FRONT ROW WARRIORS are a young band, but with experienced musicians. Otherwise such a great album would not have been possible.
Of course, everyone will be interested to know how you came together. Could you briefly outline it? Who came up with the idea? Did you know each other personally for a long time?

EG: The idea of forming a new band had been in my head for a long time. It was clear that Jay-G (Sharon, Shining) would be on drums and Ritchie Seibel (Ivanhoe, Them) on keys. On an ad our guitarist Sorin Badin (Samsara, Crystal Maze) wrote us a super nice mail and sent us some YouTube videos which impressed us very much.

After the first session where he literally swept us away both playfully and humanly. So it was clear that he would be the man on guitar, Timo Michels (Pump) our bass player we also knew for many years and he also did not have to be persuaded long. In the summer of 2022 Stef Binnig-Gollub (Septagon) joined us as our second guitarist, who again is an old friend of Ritchie and harmonizes wonderfully with Sorin. So we are not a cast band, but if you will six friends with the same vision.

MH: How did you approach the album then? What did it start with? What did you focus on? How did the songs come about?

EG: First we created the songs in the rehearsal room, then we recorded the pre-production at Roland Seidel. Jay-G. recorded the drums in his home studio. All the others also did their takes in their own studios and I recorded my vocals with Michael Bormann in his studio in Duisburg who is also involved in the choirs and did a great job. We wanted to have a proper production with an official sound and were lucky that Achim Köhler, FOH of Avantasia, Hammerfall, Hooters, had time for corona and didn’t travel around the world….:). He produced and mixed the whole thing, final mastering was done by Patrick W. Engel.

favorite songs

MH: Normally every band member has his favorite track on an album. This usually has very different reasons. How does it look like with you?

EG: I can only speak for one part of the band, for me it’s „Hell Awaits“, Dystopian time“, Ritchie loves „Wasted life“, Jay G-„Wheel of Fortune“, Sorin for sure „The Hunter“ but it’s quite difficult because we all like the songs, otherwise they wouldn’t have ended up on the debut.

fantasy & magic

MH: Your cover artwork with its magical elements could also be a poster for a fantasy movie. Do you consider yourself an imaginative person? (Often, unfortunately, this ability diminishes in many people as they get older). Where do you still see magical things in our world?

EG: We are really proud of our cover artwork by Uwe Jarling. Among other things, he actually draws a lot of fantasy covers for books, and we worked out the Wheel together with him. He is incredibly creative and a very nice guy.
I think I’ve been able to keep my imagination pretty well and it always saves me when life gets a bit more difficult… Magical things are around every corner, we just have to keep our eyes on them: the smile of a child, a butterfly flying by, a bee sitting on a flower, rainbows, the smell of fresh hay, good books, and of course lots of good music. Many things are magic if we take time to see and perceive them.

Wheel Of Fortune

MH: The album is called „Wheel Of Fortune“. What is that all about? What is the content of the songs about? Do you believe in higher powers?

EG: Wheel of Fortune, I do believe in a higher power and also that our fate is in a way predetermined. Everything that comes often only makes sense in retrospect. When I think back how the last four years with the band have gone and all that has happened, I’m sure that it was already a destiny to form this.

My lyrics are about all the things that bother me, about all the warmongers of this world. They are sometimes socially critical and thoughtful but without wanting to proselytize. Of course, love and longing with its many faces play a role as in „Chasing Shadows“ or „Wheel of Fortune“, but also things like our finiteness…. In „Wasted Life“ I have processed the death of my mother, which is therefore my most emotional track.

In „Dystopian time“ Todd has at my request the „prophecy of the Cree“ recorded, also motto of the U.S. environmental movement, which has captivated me in its statement early because it so simply and clearly puts into words what really counts in life. We unfortunately so often forgotten, that was also the basis for the lyrics of „Dystopian time“.

MH: As mentioned at the beginning, your sound is very much based on the 80s and early 90s. Why did you choose this sound in particular? What do you associate with the rock and metal music of the 80’s and early 90’s?

EG: After all, we are all children of the 80’s and 90’s, and have experienced this music in its heyday. The lifestyle that came over from the USA with the early music videos and of course all those gifted guitar gods, the hair metal times and this positive vibe that made the halls shake at live concerts. We wanted all that back in our music.

Change in the music world

MH: Let’s come back down to earth from higher powers. How have you perceived the changes in the music industry in the last 20 years? Which developments are particularly serious for you, both in a positive and negative sense? Is it easier or harder to get your music out there nowadays than it used to be?

EG: The world is constantly changing and everything new doesn’t always have advantages. The home studios simplify a lot of things today, but you can’t compare it with the magic of a studio stay in the past. When the whole band sat in the control room and had hot debates with the sound engineer, the beer ran out and there were no delivery services yet…. Certainly, the developments in streaming are a huge topic that unfortunately we all can’t get past and have to come to terms with. The fact that vinyl, for example, is on the rise again is a bit of a miracle, and I’m personally very happy about it.

problems in the live sector

What we are all concerned about is the development in the live sector. It is getting harder and harder for newcomer bands to get concerts, not to mention that the promoters often hardly pay or pay very low fees and the number of clubs is constantly decreasing. And unfortunately also the pre-sales are often quite sluggish. Whereby these are again crucial for the taking place of many concerts.

It’s a pity that many people still prefer to run to the big arenas where they can often only see their artists on a big screen. Also they pay horrendous ticket prices to then stand in line for what feels like three hours for a beer. You can have all this so much nicer and more relaxed for little money and still get to know many new great bands.

MH: While we are on the subject… You have a great album at the start and certainly want to present it very much live. Were you able to play some gigs already and what are your plans in this regard?

EG: We had our baptism of fire a few weeks ago and supported Michael Bormann’s Jaded Hard. Despite the fact that the album hasn’t been released yet and without any merch, it went so well that now that everything is up and running. We’re eager to finally swap the rehearsal room for the stages of the world. We are currently negotiating with some festival organizers, there are already great commitments for 2024 and several plans. FRONT ROW WARRIORS (Facebook, Homepage) huldigen auf ihrem Album „Wheel Of Fortune“ dem klassischen Hardrock, der sich am Sound der 80’er Jahre anlehnt. Dabei verschwimmt manchesmal die Grenze zum melodischen Heavy Metal. Und ich möchte es direkt vorwegnehmen: Das Album ist absolut fantastisch und niemand würde glauben, dass es sich tatsächlich um ein Debütalbum handelt.

FRONT ROW WARRIORS liefern ein ganzes Album voller grandioser Songs, mit denen man in den 80’er Jahren definitiv große Arenen gefüllt hätten. Wir haben nun andere Zeiten, aber dieser Sound hat nach wie vor eine Magie, der man sich nicht entziehen kann. Schon gar nicht, wenn so eine charismatische Sängerin wie Elkie Gee am Mikro ihre vortreffliche Sangeskunst zum Besten gibt. Diese Stimme ist einfach der Hammer und ich könnte mir niemanden vorstellen, der die Songs besser performen könnte.

Ausgeklügelte Performance

Es bedarf nur der Vorstellung von dem Video zum Titeltrack „Wheel Of Fortune„, um die Fähigkeiten der Band zu demonstrieren. Tja, und das geilste daran ist, dass nicht nur Elkie mit ihrer geilen Voice den Sound super bedient, sondern auch alle anderen in der Band eine einwandfreie ausgeklügelte Performance abliefern. Ich bin jedenfalls so dermaßen angetan, dass ich diese Band auf alle Fälle gerne live sehen möchte. Das ausgezeichnete Songwriting und die unglaubliche Präsentation dessen mit diesen famosen Musikern ist einfach unbeschreiblich genial. Hört Euch dieses irre Keybordsolo in Verbindung mit dem grandiosen Gitarrensolo an!!! Und dieser Chorus ist einfach zum Niederknien!

Was will man mehr?

Na gar nix! Es ist ein rundum geiler Songmix! Hier wird ein erstklassiger Song nach dem anderen geliefert. Songs, die abrocken und Songs, die mit einer fetten Ladung Atmosphäre punkten wie zum Beispiel der Midtempo-Kracher „Fantastic“. Die Gitarren sind immer wieder ein wahrer Genuß und man kann sich gar nicht satt hören, egal ob es die griffigen Riffs oder die traumhaften Solos sind. Sehr wohlwollend nehme ich auch zur Kenntnis, dass der Sound super abgemischt wurde und sehr ausgewogen klingt. Alles wird schon herausgearbeitet, so dass jederzeit alles so zur Geltung kommt wie es sein muss.

Alles drin, alles dran!

Dann preschen FRONT ROW WARRIORS plötzlich mit „Deadly Sins“ hervor. Wow!!! Was für eine Rakete! Wer da keine Zuckungen bekommt und mitfiebert, der hat einfach keinen Sinn für mitreißenden hervorragend inszenierten Heavy Metal der klassischen Art. Es gibt einfach nichts, was man hier besser machen könnte. Der Sound packt einen und man lässt einen nicht mehr los. Die Keys in den Songs sind perfekt inszeniert und sorgen für die wichtige atmosphärische Verzierungen der Songs.

Das Wunderbare an dem Album ist, dass die Songs sehr individuell gestaltet sind. Man kann jeden Songs sofort wiedererkennen. „Hellinvaders“ ist z.B. ein echter Brecher mit stark sägenden Riffs und einem Gigantosolo des Leadgitarristen Sorin Badin. Da bleibt einem die Spucke weg! Und das passiert häufiger auf diesem Album.

Jeder Song wäre in den 80’er Jahren ein Hit gewesen. Und auch die gefühlvolle Seite hat die Band megamäßig drauf. Man nehme z.B. die Power Ballade „Love Is Not A Game“ mit seinem prächtigen Refrain. Und schwuppdiewupp erwischt man sich wieder einmal dabei wie man bei den geilen Solos die Luftgitarre bespielt. Der letzte Track ‚Wasted Life‘ begeistert mit ebenfalls mit einer emotionalen Ader. Ruhige Phasen plätschern schön sanft dahin, aber es es kommt auch Bewegung und Power in den Song. Ein episches Ende für ein ausgezeichnetes Album!

Fazit

FRONT ROW WARRIORS liefern mit „Wheel Of Fortune“ ein perfektes Album ab. Hier gibt es nichts zu kritisieren. Dabei offenbart sich ein buntes Fest individueller Songs, die mit viel Liebe zum Detail und einem geschmeidigen Händchen für atmosphärische Elemente komponiert worden sind. Darüber hinaus werden die Songs handwerklich von der gesamten Band grandios mit viel Können gerockt. Sängerin Elkie setzt dem Ganzen mit ihrer charismatischen Stimme und ihrer Sangeskunst die Krone auf.

‚Wheel Of Fortune‘ muss man lieben! Wirklich jeder Song ist ein Hit! Und deswegen ist es für mich ein absoluter Volltreffer und sahnt bei mir wohlverdiente 10 Punkte ab. Und es wird Zeit, dass diese Band viel mehr wohlverdiente Aufmerksamkeit bekommt. Ich jedenfalls fiebere dem ersten Konzert in meiner Region entgegen. Das werde ich mir nicht entgehen lassen!

Hardrock

FRONT ROW WARRIORS (Facebook, Homepage) pay homage to classic Hardrock on their album „Wheel Of Fortune“, which is based on the sound of the 80s. Sometimes the border to melodic Heavy Metal is crossed. And I would like to anticipate it directly: This album is absolutely fantastic and no one would believe that it is actually a debut album.

FRONT ROW WARRIORS deliver a whole album full of great songs that would have definitely filled big arenas in the 80’s. We have different times now, but this sound still has a magic you can’t escape. Especially not when such a charismatic singer like Elkie Gee shows her excellent singing skills. This voice is great and I could not imagine anyone who could perform the songs better.

Sophisticated performance

It only takes the video for the titletrack „Wheel Of Fortune“ to demonstrate the band’s abilities. Well, and the greatness doesn’t only come from Elkie, who brilliantly handles the sound with her brilliant voice, but also all the other bandmates deliver a flawless sophisticated performance. In any case, I am so impressed that I would definitely like to see this band live. The excellent songwriting and incredible presentation of it with these fabulous musicians is just indescribably awesome. Listen to that insane keyboard solo combined with the terrific guitar solo!!!! And this beautiful chorus is simply to die for!

What more could you want?

Nothing at all! It’s an all-around awesome song mix! Here one awesome song after the other is delivered. Songs that rock and songs that score with a dense atmosphere like the song „Fantastic“. The guitars are always a real pleasure and you can’t get enough of them, no matter if it’s the catchy riffs or the dreamlike solos. Very benevolently I also note that the sound was mixed flawless and sounds very balanced.

All in!

Then FRONT ROW WARRIORS suddenly burst out with „Deadly Sins“. Wow!!! What a rocket! If you don’t get excited, you just don’t have any sense for rousing rockmusic. There is simply nothing that could be done better here. This sound grabs you and you don’t let go. The keys in the songs are perfectly staged and provide the important atmospheric embellishments to the songs.

The wonderful thing about the album is that the songs are very individual. You can recognize each song immediately. „Hellinvaders“, for example, is a real breaker with strong sawing riffs and a gigantic solo by lead guitarist Sorin Badin. It’s enough to make you drool! And that happens more often on this album.

Every song would have been a hit in the 80’s. The band also shows a superb emotional side. Take for example the power ballad „Love Is Not A Game“ with its magnificent chorus. And you catch yourself many times playing the air guitar during the awesome solos.The last track „Wasted Life“ also inspires with an emotional vein. Quiet phases ripple along gently, but there is also movement and power in the song. An epic end for an excellent album!

Conclusion

FRONT ROW WARRIORS deliver a perfect album with „Wheel Of Fortune“. There is nothing to criticize here. It reveals a colorful feast of individual songs that have been composed with great attention to detail and a supple knack for atmospheric elements. In addition, the songs are rocked with great craftsmanship by the entire band. Singer Elkie puts the crown on the whole thing with her charismatic voice.

You have to love ‚Wheel Of Fortune‘! Really every song is a hit! And that’s why „Wheel Of Fortune“ is an absolute blast for me and gets a well-deserved 10 points. And it’s about time that this band gets much more well-deserved attention. I for one am looking forward to the first concert in my region. I will not miss it!
