Aus dem amerikanischen Portland stammen die 4 Herren von UNTO OTHERS. Das kommende Album mit dem Titel „Never, Neverland“ soll am 20.09.2024 über Century Media Records erscheinen. Gothic Doom aus dem europäischen Norden. Das sind EVIG NATT aus Norwegen. Die Formation mit Frontfrau Kirsten Jørgensen hat jetzt – angesichts der Vertragsunterzeichnung bei Wormholedeath  – mit dem Song „Når Lyset Svikte“ einen Vorgeschmack auf zukünftiges Material geliefert. Hier bekommt ihr den Track:

Sagt euch der Name Aaron Stainthorpe etwas? Richtig, das ist der Frontmann von MY DYING BRIDE. Der wird bei dem Material gefeatured. Und dann wäre da noch „Greg“ Mackintosh. Ja, genau, der PARADISE LOST-Gitarrist. Der hat das Material produziert. Zwei angesehene Namen in der britischen Metalszene also. Aber worum geht es überhaupt? Die Rede ist vom Debütalbum „Forever we burn“ der neu erschaffenen Formation HIGH PARASITE. Das soll am 27.09.2024 erscheinen. Schon jetzt gibt es mit „Wasn’t human“ eine erste Single daraus:

Jetzt geben wir noch mal Gas! Mit „Villain“ von DEADLANDS. Das ist die brandneue Single und der Beginn der Zusammenarbeit mit Spinefarm. Man hat kürzlich einen Deal unterzeichnet und so darf man sich hoffentlich bald auf weiteres Material freuen. Die erste Ladung hat schon mal Power…

Natürlich kennt ihr Jerry Cantrell. Der Gitarrist und Sänger hat sich neben seinen Aktivitäten bei ALICE IN CHAINS als Solokünstler einen Namen gemacht. Sein neues Album „I want blood“ ist für den 18.10.2024 zum Release eingeplant. Neun Songs sollen darauf Platz finden. Die erste Single liegt schon jetzt als Video vor. Today we are happy to speak with drummer Jeff Singer, known from his work with various bands in the british metal scene. And now he is back very active with KILL II THIS. We had some questions and below, you’ll find the answers. So let’s go for it!

MH: Hey Jeff, you have been pretty busy in various activities regarding music. And there are some things going on in the near future. Please bring us and our readers up to date by answering the following questions. KILL II THIS has quite some fanbase in Europe. And these fans are waiting patiently for the release of a new album, as there have been songs released as videos in the past years (as for „Sleeper cell“ and „Coma karma“). Tell us more about the new material and the idea of the upcoming album.

Touring with MEGADETH, ANNIHILATOR & Co.

JS: KILL II THIS has a long history with European shows going right back to 1996 where we completed tours with ANNIHILATOR, GRIP INC., SLIPKNOT, MACHINE HEAD and MEGADETH amongst others. I went on to play in other big projects, but we decided to put the band back together in 2014. We have played some shows here and there but we wanted to return with a new album. We are older and wiser and wanted to record a classic KILL II THIS album with a modern edge, which we certainly have achieved. What we didn’t realise when we started the process was, that I would have a serious spinal injury. Covid would knock us all out of the park, we would get busy with other projects we were committed to and Mark (the producer and guitar player for KILL II THIS) would be so busy with production work.

JS: The album will be released in May 2024 on Revolver Records and is the first with our new singer Simon Gordon who was formally in XENTRIX. He has a great voice with great versatility and range. The rest of the band are the same lads who toured together as China Beach in 2005/2006, before forming KILL II THIS. Our new single „Less Human“ is out now. The the second track to be released, „DEUS“, will be released on 22.03.2024.

MH: in how far is there a record deal and are there any touring plans yet, in relation of the release of the studioalbum?

JS: There are always discussions about tours and shows but we have to think around our current schedules and try and make something fit. Also, the shows have to be a good fit for the band.

Interview with Jeff Singer (KILL II THIS)

MH: in what ways were you involved in the creation of the new songs?

JS: I have always been someone to help with arrangements and that has continued with this album. Right back to the times of „Another Cross To Bare“ and „Deviate“. Mark and I worked very closely on tempos, feel and structure which is something I really enjoy doing. Mark is such a perfectionist, the rest of the album has followed suit but has taken a long time to complete. If we hadn’t mixed and mastered the tracks, I am sure he would still be looking at ways to make everything even better! That is his nature.

MH: in the past months (and years) you have been invited to play with other bands like MY DYING BRIDE and others. Please tell us about these experiences.

The past and the present

JS: I have been so very lucky in my career surrounding myself with excellent situations with great people, which have provided me with incredible experiences and memories. Unfortunately, MY DYING BRIDE didn’t work out that way for me. With that said, I hope fans enjoyed the album and EP I recorded with them. I am now playing live with ARD and I have a secret project which I can’t talk about at the moment, but that will be available soon. It is worth the wait.

MH: how is the contact to the guys from PARADISE LOST? You have been playing together for quite a while in the past…

JS: PARADISE LOST will always be in my heart. As a fan it was a joy to be in the band and to be part of their amazing legacy. And I have much love and respect for all of the lads and their team. I last went back to play with them at Bloodstock in the UK in 2021 and hope that opportunity arises again. That band are a force of nature and in many ways. I think it is so sad I had to leave, but family at the time had to come first.

MH: then you said, that there is a new project coming up. I don’t know, how far the progress has developed, but maybe you can already gives us an insight about what is going on!?

Mir ist, als wäre es gestern gewesen, als ich erstmals auf AFTER ALL gestoßen bin. Die belgische Formation hat mittlerweile mehr als 3 Jahrzehnte auf dem Buckel und mit mehreren Line up-Wechseln 10 Alben rausgehauen. Anno 2022 fand nun ein Labelwechsel statt und bei Metalville Records soll am 14.10.2022 die neue Scheibe mit dem Titel „Eos“ erscheinen. Wir werden 11 Tracks bekommen und die Band stellt uns den neuen Drummer Bert Guillemont sowie Frontmann Mike Slembrouck vor. Man darf also gespannt sein, was uns da im Oktober erwartet und wie sich der Austausch der Bandmember musikalisch auswirkt. Sobald uns die erste Musik vorliegt, stellen wir sie euch vor und zu gegebener Zeit ist dann auch eine Review geplant.

Auf XENTRIX bin ich damals gestoßen, weil ich eine ansprechende Review in einer Metalzeitschrift (ja, so aus Papier zum Blättern…) gelesen habe. So habe ich mir 1989 das Debütalbum gekauft. Mittlerweile schreiben wir das Jahr 2022 und November soll mit „Seven words“ das siebte Studio-Release der britischen Formation erscheinen. 11 Tracks hat der Vierer für seine Fans in petto. Ich freue mich schon auf das neue Material, bei dem bei Mix & Mastering der renommierte Andy Sneap Hand angelegt hat…

David Readman kennen wir von verschiedenen Bands und Projekten als starken Sänger und vor wenigen Tagen hat der sympathische Frontmann nun sein aktuelles Soloalbum namens „Medusa“ herausgebracht. Auch wenn sich langsam erste Lichtblicke bei den Pandemiebeschränkungen ergeben, weil die Infektionszahlen erfreulicherweise etwas rückläufig sind, so bleibt es vorerst dabei: die Konzert- und Festivalszene liegt komplett auf Eis und damit sind zahlreiche Menschen, die in diesem Bereich die tragenden Jobs hinter den Kulissen ausüben, ohne Einkommen. Die Rede ist von den Roadies, den Technikern, den Tourmanagern etc. – sie alle haben keine Chance in ihrer regulären Branche einem Job nachzukommen, weil es einfach die entsprechenden Veranstaltungen nicht gibt. Wir hatten ja hier bei metal-heads.de schon mehrfach vom tollen Projekt UK Metal Merger berichtet. U.a. könnt ihr hier etwas dazu lesen. In Schweden gibt eine andere Aktion, die in eine vergleichbare Richtung weisen soll. Dazu könnt ihr unseren Beitrag hier finden.

Neues von MIRRORPLAIN

Mehr als 250.000 Pfund für den guten Zweck & weitere News

Die Formation PENTESILEA ROAD ist schon seit ein paar Jahren aktiv, aber erst in diesem Februar hat man das gleichnamige Debütalbum an den Start gebracht. Mit der tatkräftigen Unterstützung aus der „FATES WARNING-Familie“ – namentlich Ray Alder und Mark Zonder – hat der Vierer ein Studiorelease mit einem Dutzend Tracks veröffentlicht.  Hier bekommt ihr eine aktuelle Auskopplung aus von der Scheibe als Video.

Zuletzt noch der Hinweis, dass bedingt durch die Kontaktbeschränkungen im Rahmen der Situation Dank Covid-19 ein weiteres angesehenes Event verschoben wird. Es handelt sich um das Bochumer Zeltfestival Ruhr. Die Veranstaltung vereint traditionell verschiedene Bereiche und bietet neben Bands und Solokünstlern auch diversen Acts aus der Comedy- und Kabarettszene eine Plattform in der besonderen Atmosphäre der Zelte aufzutreten. Aufgrund der Corona-Pandemie wurde also nun das Event auf den 19.08.-04.09.2022 verschoben. Das Programm soll laut einer aktuellen Pressemitteilung grundsätzlich bestehen bleiben. Allerdings müssen wohl noch ein paar Termine abgestimmt werden.

Wir von metal-heads.de haben euch ja bereits erstmals hier das erste Mal von UK Metal Merger berichtet. Das unterstützenswerte Projekt von zahlreichen britischen Musikern soll ein Zeichen setzen und denjenigen Menschen helfen, die unter den Folgen der Corona-Pandemie für die Musikszene vermutlich am meisten leiden. Die Rede ist von den Roadies, Ton- und Soundtechnikern, Tourmanagern und Mechandisern. Während die Bands im besten Fall noch Studioaufnahmen für neue Veröffentlichungen hinbekommen, bricht für die Mitglieder der Roadcrews jede Form von Einnahmequellen weg. Denn ohne Tourneen und Festivals gibt es keine Tätigkeit für sie. Und mit ihrer Spezialisierung und in diesen ohnehin schwierigen Zeiten, findet man ja auch nicht mal eben eine alternative Beschäftigung, um seinen Lebensunterhalt zu sichern.

Deshalb ist die Idee großartig, unter dem Namen UK Metal Mergers als Zusammenschluss mehrerer Musiker aus britischen Bands unterschiedlichen Bekanntheitsgrades (von CRADLE OF FILTH und MY DYING BRIDE über KILL II THIS bis zu XENTRIX) gemeinsam Musik zu erschaffen und damit Geld für den guten Zweck zusammenzutragen.

Und heute ist der Erscheinungstag der ersten Single mit dem Titel „In solitude“ aus dem kreativen Aufeinandertreffen engagierter Musiker. Das Video mussten wir bis jetzt unter Verschluss halten. Jetzt also dürft ihr es euch anschauen. Film ab.

Hier könnt auch ihr euren Beitrag leisten und eine Spende für die Aktion beisteuern. Eine gute Sache und viele von uns haben vermutlich das Glück, dass ihr Job finanziell nicht oder zumindest nur teilweise von den Folgen der Corona-Pandemie betroffen ist.

Interviews mit zwei beteiligten Musikern

Zum Abschluss unseres heutigen Beitrags wollen wir euch noch auf zwei in den vergangenen Wochen geführte Interviews hinweisen. Einerseits haben wir mit aktuellen MY DYING BRIDE-Drummer Jeff Singer über sein Mitwirken bei UK Metal Merger und einen Ausblick auf die anstehenden Aktivitäten mit der Band gesprochen. Dazu haben wir Mark Mynett (u.a. KILL II THIS-Gitarrist) einige Fragen gestellt, denn der gute Mann hat mit seinen Mynetaur Productions den technischen Teil des Projektes übernommen und die Zusammenkunft der Musiker vom Sound her gut klingen lassen. Today we are happy to talk to Mark Mynett, founding member and guitarist of KILL II THIS, and also music producer and a lecturer in music technology at the university of Huddersfield. The occasion is the great project going on these days under the flag of UK Metal Merger. The idea is, to gather money for the people in the music business, that are totally dependent on the work during festivals and live concerts, which is impossible for a longer time due to the ongoing covid-19-pandemic.

We from metal-heads.de have been reporting about the gig of KILL II THIS at the RAGE AGAINST RACISM open air in 2019 here and now we wanna get in touch and see, how Mark got involved with this new project and what else is going on.

How did you get involved with UK Metal Merger?

MH: Hey Mark, great to speak to you again. The last occasion was your time at the festival here in Duisburg in 2019, where our magazine is based and where we spent some time together around your gig. That was before covid-19 came up and messed it all up quite a bit. Now we are happy to have you back here and learn something about UK Metal Merger. Can you tell us, how it all developed and how did you get involved?

MM: Hey Amir! Always a pleasure to chat with you and be involved in any way possible with the mighty metal-heads.de site! Having a lot of friends involved in live music production from a really wide range of perspectives – sound engineers, monitor engineers, lighting designers, guitar/bass/drum/keyboard techs, tour managers, production managers, stagehands, house technicians, etc. – it quickly became obvious how incredibly hard the pandemic hit their lives and livelihoods. Whilst most musicians could at least continue with their creativity, and potentially still receive revenue from continued merchandise sales and album royalties, this was far from the case with live music crew. I know so, so many that have slipped through the gaps in government support, with many going on to lose their houses, and provide for their families via food banks. It has been a particularly grim time for them.

It all started in the first lockdown…

So, in lockdown one, I decided that it would be a great project to start a collaboration with some great UK metal musicians, and the song just came together beautifully…I think it is a really great song, with some killer performances!   

MH: Of yourse, being a musician yourself, that is playing (and visiting) live concerts for many years, you know about the importance of the road crew. Where do you see the main goals of UK Metal Merger?

Not back to normal on 21.06.2021!

MM: To raise awareness and funds for live music crew, providing vital financial (and in some instances mental health) support aimed at preventing a catastrophic loss of skills, knowledge and experience in the UK live-music industry, to help them through the crisis they are going through. So many people just think that on June 21^st, when live music is allowed to restart, that a switch will get flicked and everything will be back to normal. This is far from the case.

MH: As far as I know, you took part as a musician and also „behind the scenes“. How much material was composed for this great idea and what was your part in that process?  

MM: In the first instance, I sent Jeff’s drum tracks to various guitarists and, after re-amping the DI parts (to provide a consistent rhythm tone) arranged these contributions into a cohesive song. I then got strings, cello, piano parts introduced via contributions from session cellist Jo Quail, and composer Mark Deeks (Winterfylleth keys), and then got bass, then numerous vocal contributions. I then mixed and mastered the song.  

MH: How did the recording etc. work with all these contact restrictions and hygienic rules due to covid-19?

MM: All carried out in isolation, Amir!

Recording of a full album and live shows…wait and see!

MH: Do you see an expansion of the project? I mean, that other musicians in England join (I’m thinking about PARADISE LOST or even IRON MAIDEN etc.)? Are there any plans for live appearances with the musicians being involved in UK Metal Merger?

MM: I would like to think so….we have already been approached about a live appearance, and there is some discussion about a full album being produced….we’ll see!

MH: Do you expect other musicians maybe also in other countries to follow the good example of UK Metal Merger and set up similar projects?

Expanding the idea to the USA and mainland Europe!!

MM: Potentially…there is discussion about the project being repeated in US, then mainland Europe.

MH: Let’s talk about yourself and the situation as a musician in these crazy times. As far as I know, after the above mentioned festival appearance KILL II THIS had the plans to record/release more music, right? What happened to these plans? Are there ideas of doing more things in the studio to use the time while live activities are delayed right now?

MM: The new KILL II THIS-album will be ready for release in September this year, and it is sounding KILLER!

MH: Are there any ideas for live concerts for the time after the end of the pandemic?

MM: For my own part, only as front of house engineer for MY DYING BRIDE.

MH: Finally: how does the pandemic affect your job at the university? Many people switched to working online with video conferences etc. – is that possible for you?

Today we from metal-heads.de are hooking up with well known british drummer Jeff Singer, who has played the drums in various bands during his career. Most impressing in the past probably his work with PARADISE LOST, and right now he is active with the famous MY DYING BRIDE and also still involved with the great band KILL II THIS. We want to ask him a few questions about the great idea of UK Metal Merger (here is a first news about the project) and how he got involved there. Also, as we would like to take a look at his personal situation as a musician in this covid-19-pandemic. Let’s go.

MH: Hi Jeff, great to talk to you again. The last occasion was the chat about MY DYING BRIDE in January 2020 (you can find that here), that was before it all began with the worldwide spreading of covid-19…now we are happy to have you back here and learn something more. First of all, let’s talk about the idea of UK Metal Merger. Who is the one with the idea behind that project and how did you get involved?

The idea behind UK Metal Merger and how it started

JS: Hi Amir. Thanks for having me on to discuss the project. My long term band mate and excellent producer Mark Mynett got in touch with me last summer to say, he had an idea to make a song involving a wide variety of musicians to help with fundraising and try and assist all of the crews and engineers in the music industry affected by the Covid crisis. The problem is, this crisis is wider than anyone comprehends and to get back to any sort of ’normal‘ will be very difficult. We take all of these crew guys for granted, but without them all of the shows we love, just wouldn’t happen and now they all falling through the cracks and some are in real trouble.

I recorded drums for the song ‚In Solitude‘ and then Mark sent the files out to a range of musicians who kindly contributed remotely. The song is over 12 minutes and showcases the wealth of talent our genre is blessed to have.

MH: As a musician, that is playing (and visiting) live concerts for decades, you of course know about the importance of the road crew. Where do you see the main goals of UK Metal Merger?

Now it’s time to help the crews

JS: We have to help these people. Some have lost their homes, some have had to take any job just to try and make ends meet. If we lose this experience and talent, how will it be replaced all around the world?  They are the first to step up for charity shows, when asked and they give their time freely. Now it is their turn. I say to people not to turn their backs. A little contribution from every one can go a long way.

MH: Do you see an expansion of the project, meaning more musicians to join? Are there any plans for live appearances as soon, as the pandemic allows to gain even more money?

Covid-19 makes it difficult to come together

JS: This year for obvious reasons will mean it is very difficult to get anything together for such a complex project with so many musicians. There has been talk of the project being taken to other territories to get musicians from different countries involved, but nothing has been confirmed to me…and I said any musicians can be involved…but the drums stay!  

Interview with Jeff Singer about his contribution to UK Metal Merger

MH: Let’s talk about yourself and the situation as a musician in these crazy times. There had been dates booked with MY DYING BRIDE for big festivals like the GRASPOP METAL MEETING and then – due to the ongoing pandemic – been postponed to 2022. I’m sure, when a musician records new material, he wants to go out there and play it for an audience. How do you feel with the breakdown of the live music scene at the moment?

Cancelled shows bring frustration, big festivals were booked

JS: The breakdown of these shows is really worrying and frustrating. This is the second year, which affects the touring cycle for „Ghost Of Orion“ and „Macabre Cabaret“ (MY DYING BRIDE’s two releases in 2020). We haven’t played one show to support and we were looking forward to festivals with IRON MAIDEN and JUDAS PRIEST amongst others. The other side is that I worry about, is promoters going bust, experienced staff being lost and the prospect that these annual shows we know and love may simply be lost.

MH: Are there any plans, safe enough to talk about, regarding future live appearances? Or are there ideas of doing more things in the studio to use the time while live activities are delayed so much?

A new MY DYING BRIDE-album…!?

JS: Unfortunately our gigs seem to be dropping off one by one because of the impact of the virus, but we are rehearsing and throwing around new ideas for an album, but it is early days. It is good to see each other and to blow away the rustiness when playing. KILL II THIS are recording a short stream for UK Metal Merger for release on May 1st as a run up to the „In Solitude“ release on May 4th.

MH: Finally: there is a big interest from companies regarding endorsements for their products these days. Can you tell us, what was/is going on there and how it came up!?

JS: Things have been a bit mad. I have never been so busy. I had a custom British Drum Company kit delivered last September with all of their new hardware set to arrive later this year. I have a signature stick deal with the fantastic Wincent company from Sweden. I have Remo, Sabian, Hardcase and Roland really on board and have just agreed to use Drum Workshop pedals. I have another thing in discussion, but I can’t talk about that yet. I am a very lucky boy. I just need some gigs to get everything out of the boxes!

Die Corona-Pandemie mit ihren Kontaktbeschränkungen hat die Welt seit mittlerweile mehr als einem Jahr fest im Griff. Das betrifft auch einen wesentlichen Bereich, mit dem wir von metal-heads.de uns täglich beschäftigen. Die Musikszene ist gemeint. Glücklicherweise werden ja weiter großartige Alben aufgenommen, teils aus der Ferne und unter abenteuerlichen Bedingungen. Aber immerhin. Live-Konzerte und Festivals sind dagegen langfristig auf Eis gelegt.

Diese Menschen sind direkt betroffen

Das trifft natürlich die Fans als Konsumenten und auch die Besitzer von Clubs, Konzerthallen etc., aber vor allem sind diejenigen betroffen, die ihren Lebensunterhalt ausschließlich mit ihrem Einsatz auf den Touren rund um den Erdball verdienen. Sound- und Tontechniker, Roadies, Tourmanager etc. – ohne sie und ihre motiviert ausgeübte Arbeit könnte auch die beste Band keine Gigs spielen und das größte Festival wäre nicht viel wert. Vielen Leuten scheint die Bedeutung dieser Berufsgruppen nicht bewusst. Aber den Musikern ist natürlich aus ihrer täglichen Zusammenarbeit klar, welche wichtige Rolle diese Menschen spielen. So haben sich jetzt zahlreiche britische Musiker unter dem Titel UK Metal Merger zusammengeschlossen, um auf die Missstände aufmerksam zu machen und Geld zur Unterstützung für die Roadcrews zu sammeln.

Namhafte Musiker bringen uns Musik für den guten Zweck

Der Titel deutet es an, es ist ein Zusammenschluss von britischen Musikern namhafter Bands. Es ist ja unbestritten, welche großartigen Acts auf der Insel beheimatet sind, aber es ist schon recht beeindruckend, wenn man die Liste der Beteiligten liest. Es seien nur beispielhaft Richard Shaw von CRADLE OF FILTH, Stan Havard von XENTRIX, Luke Appleton von ICED EARTH, Simon Gordon von KILL II THIS und Jeff Singer von MY DYING BRIDE genannt. Gemeinsam hat man Musik komponiert und aufgenommen. Für Produktion, Mix und Mastering war Mark Mynett von Mynetaur Productions verantwortlich, der seinerseits selber als Musiker die Bedeutung der Aktion aus seinem Touralltag kennt.

Am 06.05.2021 erscheint „In solitude“ als Single. Den Song gibt es einerseits in einer langen Version und dazu in einem knapp 6-minütigen Radio Edit. Wie es zu der momentanen Stimmung in der Live-Musikszene passt, ist der Track recht düster und melancholisch, wenn man berücksichtigt, welche Musiker beteiligt sind, ist auch eine gewisse Heavyness nachvollziehbar. Zunächst geht es langsam los mit Pianoklängen, bevor eine Schwere – man fühlt sich da an Werke von PARADISE LOST erinnert – den Hörer ergreift. Das Ganze nimmt dann Fahrt auf, um plötzlich wieder innezuhalten. Das hat inhaltlich irgendwie etwas mit Achterbahnfahren zu tun. So fühlt man sich ja auch regelmäßig bei den Entwicklungen im Zusammenhang mit der Pandemie.

Aber im weiteren Verlauf zeigt sich die Nummer kraftvoll. Zwischendurch eingebaute weibliche Vocals. Ein bisschen Hoffnung scheint da durchzuschimmern…

Wir bleiben für euch am Ball, Details folgen…

Wir von metal-heads.de kümmern uns darum, an diesem Projekt aktiv beteiligte Personen für Interviews zu bekommen. Also schaut regelmäßig bei uns rein und dann erfahrt ihr mehr zum Thema. Das Ganze ist absolut unterstützendswert, denn es wird eine Zeit nach dem „Stillstand“ geben und dann sind wir wieder auf die fachliche Kompetenz und den Einsatz der Techniker etc. angewiesen, um Konzerte und Festivals über die Bühne zu bringen.

Tomorrow’s Rain

Der Opener „Trees“ kommt noch ohne Gastauftritte aus, hat dafür aber ein Intro und Outro mit spielenden Kindern. Ein melancholischer Death Doom Song, der im Midempo gehalten ist und über dessen Grundstimmung mit der Textzeile „Zeit heilt alle Wunden, aber bringt auch den Tod“ alles gesagt ist. Toll depressiver Auftakt. Der zweite Song ist dann schon der obige „Fear“ mit Aaron Stainthorpe als Gastsänger und er verleiht dem Song eine wirklich tolle 90er Melodic Doom Komponente. Ich mag dieses Wechselspiel aus Klargesang und Growls. Und die eingebaute Bouzuki gefällt mir auch richtig gut. „A Year I Would Like To Forget“ könnte vom Titel her der Song sein, der das Jahr 2020 beschreibt. Ist er aber nicht und gerade der direkte Vergleich zu „Fear“ zeigt, dass Yishai im Klargesang nicht die Qualitäten eines Aaron von My Dying Bride hat. Aber dafür kann Raffael Mor an der Gitarre glänzen und muss sich nicht hinter Greg Mackintosh verstecken, der „In The Corner Of A Dead End Street End“ mit seinen Künsten veredelt. Fast gehauchter Klargesang trifft auf die Growls von Sakis von Rotting Christ. Musikalisch sind die Gesangswechsel auch perfekt untermalt. Ich mag so etwas.

Tomorrow’s Rain der Gästereigen geht weiter

„Misery Rain“ kann zwar wieder mit prominenten Namen (siehe unten das Video) aufwarten, ist aber der Song der mich am wenigsten packt. Abwechslungsreich und von vielen Stimmungen geprägt, aber der Aha Effekt will sich bei mir nicht einstellen. „Into The Mouth Of Madness“ ist Warrel Dane gewidmet und da passt die Gitarre von Jeff Loomis natürlich perfekt dazu. Nostalgischerweise verspüre ich hier einen leichten Nevermore-Touch und alleine deswegen mag ich den Song. Das Video gibt es unten als krönenden Abschluss. Es folgt der Titelsong, der komplett aus der Feder von Keyboarderin Shiraz Weiss stammt und mehr auf Atmosphäre denn Härte setzt. Die weiblichen Vocals im Kontrast zu den Growls von Spiros (Septicflesh) sind eine weitere Note auf dieser vielfältigen Platte. Als letzten Song gibt es noch eine Coverversion vom „Weeping Song“ von Nick Cave. Ich hätte nie gedacht, dass es davon mal eine Death Doom Version geben würde. Nun hier ist sie und klingt erstaunlich gut.

Tomorrow’s Rain mit einem starken Debüt

Tomorrow’s Rain ist mit „Hollow“ ein starkes Debüt gelungen. Die Platte lebt von der Vielfalt, gerade bei den Vocals. So gelingt es der Band zu jedem Song die passende Atmosphäre und Spannung zu kreieren. „Hollow“ ist kein modernes Album geworden. Es lebt und atmet mit jeder Note den frühen Death Doom mit einer guten Prise Gothic. Die Liste der Gastmusiker ist da auch ein guter Indikator. Ob es richtig ist bei seinem Debüt auf so viele Gäste zu setzen? Mir ist das vollkommen egal, wenn das Ergebnis so gut ist wie hier. Tomorrow’s Rain ist mit „Hollow“ ein Album gelungen, das mich mit seiner Atmosphäre in den Bann zieht und auch gerade wegen der vielen Mitwirkenden begeistert. Ein Debüt, das für mich bis jetzt zu den vielversprechendsten des Jahres gehört und mich gespannt auf den Nachfolger zurücklässt.
