Willkommen beim ersten Teil meiner METALHEADs Toplist 2023. Ich möchte euch meine persönlichen Favoriten aus den unzähligen Veröffentlichungen des Rock und Metal präsentieren. Auch wenn ich versuche einen Überblick zu behalten, so ist das bei der Masse an Releases schier unmöglich, vor allem wenn man sich in fast allen Genres wohlfühlt. Von daher sind mir bestimmt auch einige tolle Alben durch die Lappen gegangen. Ich hoffe einfach, dass ihr euch einige Anregungen rausfiltern könnt und wünsche euch viel Spaß beim Stöbern.

Es gibt so dermaßen viele Stilrichungen im Rock und Metal, dass es manchmal schwierig ist, Bands in gewisse Schubladen zu stecken. Oft verwischen die Grenzen zwischen verschiedenen Genres, was ich allerdings sehr begrüße, denn es führt zu noch mehr, und mitunter sogar neuen musikalischen Erfahrungen. Daher möge man mir verzeihen, wenn ich Bands in eine Kategorie packe, die vielleicht nicht 100%ig passt und ihr diese eventuell woanders positionieren würdet.

CLASSIC/ BLUES ROCK

GHOST HOUNDS

aus den U.S.A. sind eine fette Nummer im Rock Business. Die Truppe aus Pittsburgh konnten dieses Jahr mit dem Album „First Last Time“ begeistern. Sänger Tré Nation hat einfach die perfekte Stimme, um den quirligen Rock zu bedienen. Er hat das gewisse Etwas in der Stimme und weiß damit auch perfekt umzugehen.

„First Last Time“ von den GHOST HOUNDS (Facebook) bietet durch und durch bestechende Songs, welche auch starke Country Vibes aufleben lassen. Dafür wären z.B. die Songs „Here No More“ oder das super flotte „Hot Dog“ ein gutes Beispiel. Selbstverständlich macht dabei ein Cover des Klassikers „Country Roads“ auch eine gute Figur. Man kann sich aber darüber hinaus an fetzigen Gitarren in kraftvollen Songs wie beispielsweise „Dirty Angel“ oder „Make It Shake“ erfreuen. Ich liebe diesen Flair mit dem Klavier und Streichern, die dem ganzen noch mehr Atmosphäre verleihen. Es nimmt mich einfach mit. Es gibt eine breite Palette an Songs, die viele Facetten des Rock ausleuchten und somit einen großen Unterhaltungswert haben.

TÚSK

Túsk (Facebook / Bandcamp) aus Irland konnten in diesem Jahr die Veröffentlichung ihres selbstbetitelten Debütalbums feiern. Mir hat sofort diese authentische lebendige Art gefallen, welche mich sofort gepackt hat. Es ist ein wirklich cooles Album, dass man sich anhören sollte. Die Gitarren sind in permanenter Action und peitschen den Sound mit geilen wilden Solos zusätzlich auf. Sänger Jamie brilliert dazu passend mit einer sehr starken inbrünstigen Gesangsleistung. TÚSK kommen mit einem sehr beeindruckenden Debütalbum daher und präsentieren allerfeinsten Blues Rock. Sie bieten eine feine Palette an qualitativ hochwertigen Songs, die handwerklich und technisch über jeden Zweifel erhaben sind.

BAD TOUCH

BAD TOUCH (Facebook) aus England kommen mit einer satten Ladung guter Laune daher, die sich in jeder Note des Albums „Bittersweet Satisfaction“ widerspiegelt und ein Feuerwerk guter Laune ist. Sie haben sich schön weiterentwickelt und knallen mal eben 10 super Kracher aus dem Ärmel. Von lässig cool, über modern eingängig bis hin zu mitreißend ekstatisch gibt es hier das komplette Verwöhnprogramm. Dieses Album lässt auch an dunkelsten Tagen die Sonne scheinen. (Review)

BAD TOUCH sind für mich einer der positivsten Bands, die ich kenne. Sie sind nach wie vor ein Garant für erstklassigen Classic Rock. Auf „Bittersweet Satisfaction“ präsentieren sie sich noch reifer und vielseitiger.

LUCIFER STAR MACHINE

Das Album „Satanic Age“ von LUCIFER STAR MACHINE (Facebook) hat mich vom ersten Song an direkt abgeholt und mich bis zum letzten nicht mehr losgelassen. Die Songs haben mich hart durchgewirbelt. Einerseits wetzt Euch die Band mit einer groben harten Körnung das Fleisch von den Knochen, können aber andererseits mit Feinschliff geile Melodien in die Songs fräsen, in die man sich einfach verlieben muss. LUCIFER STAR MACHINE haben mit ihrem Album „Satanic Age“ ein brandheißes Eisen im Höllenfeuer. Da dreht der Belzebub völlig durch. Diese teuflische Party mit dämonischgeilen Songs ist der absolute Knaller. Der Sound von LUCIFER STAR MACHINE hat alles, was ich am Rock ’n‘ Roll liebe.

PHIL CAMPBELL AND THE BASTARD SONS

Tja, was sollte da noch kommen? Eigentlich war ich mir sicher, dass das keiner mehr übertreffen könnte, aber dann kamen halt PHIL CAMPBELL AND THE BASTARD SONS (Facebook) mit ihrem Album „Kings Of The Asylum“ um die Ecke. PHIL CAMPBELL AND THE BASTARD SONS haben ihrem Sound sozusagen ne Nitro-Einspritzung verpasst. Fehlzündungen kann ich hier absolut keine feststellen. Denn „Kings Of The Asylum“ geht ausnahmslos in die Vollen und bietet dabei ein top ausgearbeitetes Programm an fantastischen Songs. Deshalb küre ich mit einem Hauch Vorsprung das Album „Kings Of The Asylum“ zum Rock ‚N‘ Roll Album des Jahres. (Review)

Das Album „Kings Of The Asylum“ hat Eier! Es brennt für den heißen old school Rock ’n‘ Roll! Wer da nicht mitgerissen wird, der liegt schon unter der Erde.

FORMOSA (Facebook) sind mittlerweile sehr erfolgreich unterwegs und haben sogar ein eigenes Festival ins Leben gerufen, nämlich das ‚FORMOSA-Bierfest‘! Und das erfreut sich immer größerer Beliebtheit im Ruhrgebiet. (siehe Bericht 2022 und Bericht 2023). Da kommen die Bands sogar gerne mal aus dem Ausland angereist, um ein Teil davon zu sein. Mittlerweile sind wir von ‚metal-heads.de‘ sogar offizielle Medienpartner dieses tollen Events.

Aber nun kurz zu dem aktuellen Album „Bittersweet“ (Review). FORMOSA haben sich merklich weiterentwickelt und schütteln durchweg tolle Songs aus dem Ärmel.

FORMOSA schenken uns mit ihrem Album „Bittersweet“ ein wirklich famoses Rockalbum. Der Sound hat sich merklich entwickelt und ist heaviger geworden. Großartige catchige Melodien sind Grundpfeiler des Albums, so dass alle Songs mit Leichtigkeit an Euren Rocksynapsen andocken und dort Glückshormone freisetzen.

„Living On Blade“

RAVENSTINE

RAVENSTINE (Facebook) waren für mich eine Megaüberraschung. Als internationale Band (gegründet im COVID 19-Lockdown) sorgten sie mit ihrem selbstbetitelten Debüt für Aufsehen in der Szene. Seitdem konnten sie ihre Fanschar stetig vergrößern. Dies ist auch kein Wunder, denn die musikalische Qualität ist über jeden Zweifel erhaben. Es werden durchweg knallige Rocksongs geboten, die jeweils ihren eigenen Charme haben und unter anderem mit kuriosen Ideen daherkommen (z.B. „Still Alive“). Ein mitreißendes und bissiges Album! Somit hat diese Band ein Platz in der Bestenliste 2023 sehr wohl verdient. (Review / Interview) Und es gibt tolle Neuigkeiten! Denn schon am 12. Januar wird das neue Album „2024“ präsentiert. Dazu gibt es bald ein Review hier auf ‚metal-heads.de‘.

Das ist Musik, die sofort Adrenalin ins Herz schießt und Glücksgefühle auslöst. Diese Band und ihre Musik muss man lieben!

„Ravenstine“

TEMPLE BALLS

TEMPLE BALLS (Facebook) aus Schweden haben am Ende des Jahres mit ihrem Album „Avalanche“ noch mal richtig einen rausgehauen. Die fetzigen Hardrock-Sounds werden mit schönen Hooks und geilen Mitsing-Refrains veredelt und so entsteht folgendes:

Mit klassischen Zutaten (aus den 80’er Jahren) zaubern die Meister von TEMPLE BALLS eine exquisite Rockmischung, die süchtig macht. Es ist diese Art Album, das man von vorne bis hinten verschlingt und gleich noch mal von vorne beginnt. Diese mitreißende Rock’n’Roll-Musik ist wie geschaffen für Partys!

„Trap“

JELUSICK

Wenn es um technische Vollendung geht, dann ist man bei JELUSICK (Facebook) genau richtig. Dino Jelusick ist nicht nur ein genialer Sänger, sondern auch ein toller Songwriter. Daran besteht wohl kein Zweifel. Mit einem hohen Anspruch an sich selbst und seinen Mitstreitern wurde nun das Debüt „Follow The Blind Man“ veröffentlicht. Lediglich die drei Balladen fallen bei mir hinter den mitreißenden Songs zurück und wirken nicht so spektakulär wie die restlichen mitreißenden Songs, welche wirklich verdammt klasse sind und eindeutig mit zu den besten Rocksongs gehören, die in diesem Jahr veröffentlicht wurden. Es sind mitreißende Songs entstanden, die es gehörig krachen lassen, aber auch zum Teil einen progressive Ader haben. Dabei liefert nicht nur Dino Jelusick als Top-Sänger eine tolle Show. Die gesamte Band spielt (technisch) auf einem hohen Level, so dass etliche ausgezeichnete Rocksongs geboten werden.

„Acid Rain“

FRONT ROW WARRIORS

Diese Band hat für mich das HARDROCK-Album des Jahres erschaffen. „Wheels Of Fortune“ hat mich einfach mit seinem 80’er Jahre-Charme verzaubert. Auf dem Album schenken FRONT ROW WARRIORS (Facebook) uns nicht nur handwerklich einwandfreie Songs, sondern sie versprühen ihren ganz eigenen Charme, an dem Sängerin Elkie Gee einen großen Anteil hat. Sie hat eine tolle Stimme und liefert hier eine mehr als überzeugende Vorstellung. Die Songs loten auch die Grenzen zum Melodic/Heavy Metal aus. Hört euch dieses verrückte Keyboard-Solo in Kombination mit dem großartigen Gitarrensolo bei „Wheel Of Fortune“ an: !!!! Und dieser Refrain ist einfach zum Niederknien! Ich mag sogar die Power-Ballade „Love Is Not A Game“ mit ihrem großartigen Refrain. (Review / Interview)

FRONT ROW WARRIORS liefern mit „Wheel Of Fortune“ ein perfektes Album ab. Hier gibt es nichts zu kritisieren. Dabei offenbart sich ein buntes Fest individueller Songs, die mit viel Liebe zum Detail und einem geschmeidigen Händchen für atmosphärische Elemente komponiert worden sind. Darüber hinaus werden die Songs handwerklich von der gesamten Band grandios mit viel Können gerockt. Sängerin Elkie setzt dem Ganzen mit ihrer charismatischen Stimme und ihrer Sangeskunst die Krone auf.

„Wheels Of Fortune“

CARBELLION

CARBELLION (Facebook) haben auf jeden Fall Benzin im Blut. Die leidenschaftlichen Rocker lassen mit ihrem Album „Weapons Of Choice“ die Reifen qualmen. Hier gibts knallharten deftigen Heavy Rock. Der Sound ist direkt und rau mit Ecken und Kanten. CARBELLION können auch mal den Fuß vom Gas nehmen, verlassen die Piste und fahren querfeldein über Stock und Stein. Alles in allem ein verdammt starkes Rennen, was CARBELLION hier abliefern. (Review)

CARBELLION rocken mit satten 10 Krachern auf ihrem Album „Weapons Of Choice“. Ihre Waffen der Wahl sind kreischende Gitarrenleads, brettharte Riffs, ein wuchtiger groovender Bass, lebendige Drums und eine dreckige Rockröhre am Mikro.

„Barfight“

TEXAS HIPPIE COALATION

Noch mal eine Band aus den U.S.A.! TEXAS HIPPIE COALATION (Facebook) sind nun wahrlich keine Unbekannten mehr in die Szene. Mit ihrem fetten Rocksound bringen sie ordentlihc Schwung in die Bude. Das neue Album heißt „The Name Lives On“. Bretthart und schwer grooven sich die Songs durch das Album. Big Dad Ritch am Mikro hat eine krasse Präsenz und lässt keinen Zweifel daran, dass er der richtige Mann für den Job ist. Seine kraftvolle Stimme ist so rau und massiv wie Felsformationen in der texanischen Wüste. (Review)

Another band from the U.S.A.! TEXAS HIPPIE COALATION (Facebook) are no longer unknown on the scene. With their fat rock sound, they really get the crowd going. The new album is called „The Name Lives On“. The songs groove hard and heavy through the album. Big Dad Ritch on the mic has a blatant presence and leaves no doubt that he is the right man for the job. His powerful voice is as rough and massive as rock formations in the Texan desert. (Review)

TEXAS HIPPIE COALITION sind auf den staubigen Pisten in der heißen Wüste von Texas zu Hause. Auch auf dem neuen Album „The Name Lives On“ liefern sie authentischen exzellenten Südstaatenrock. Damit bestätigen sie ihren eigenständigen Status als eine der besten Bands in diesem Genre.

„Hard Habit“

S.O.R.M.

Tatsächlich hat aber die schwedische Band S.O.R.M. (Facebook) für mich das Album des Jahres im Bereich Heavy Rock auf den Markt gebracht. „Under My Skin“ heißt die Wundertüte mit allerlei Krachern auf der Scheibe, wobei es auch mal gefühlvoll zur Sache geht. Micke Holm hat eine geniale Stimme, die unweigerlich an Blackie Lawless von W.A.S.P. erinnert, nur noch kräftiger. Das Trio rockt einen verdammt starken Sound. Sie driften mit „I Die For My Rock N Roll“ auch gerne mal in der Hardrock Schiene und hauen damit mal eben eine geniale Party Hymne raus oder man gibt sich mal emotional und erschafft eine gefühlvolle Darbietung mit „Under My Skin“. Ansonsten gibt es haufenweise Überraschungen, die allesamt überzeugen. Dabei geht es auch verdammt heavy zur Sache. (Review)

S.O.R.M schicken mit „Under My Skin“ ein astreines Heavy Rock Album ins Rennen. Es ist ein „Hellride“, der auch mal „Under The Skin“ geht. Es wird beste Unterhaltung geboten. S.O.R.M zeigen dabei verschiedene Facetten und haben dabei ihren ganz eigenen charakteristischen Sound, der sie von der Masse abhebt. Die grandiose Stimme von Micke Holm ist ohnehin unverwechselbar.

Welcome to the first part of my METALHEADs Toplist 2023. I would like to present you my personal favorites from the countless releases of Rock and Metal. Even if I try to keep an overview, it’s almost impossible with the mass of releases, especially if you feel comfortable in almost all genres. And that’s why I’m sure some great albums have slipped through my fingers. I just hope you have fun browsing through my toplists.

There are so many styles in rock and metal that it’s sometimes difficult to pigeonhole bands. Often the boundaries between different genres become blurred, which I welcome, because it leads to even more, and sometimes even new musical experiences. So please forgive me if I put bands in a category that might not fit 100% and you might put them somewhere else.

CLASSIC/ BLUES ROCK

GHOST HOUNDS

from the U.S.A. are a big name in the rock business. The band from Pittsburgh impressed audiences this year with their album „First Last Time“. Singer Tré Nation simply has the perfect voice to deliver this kind of rock music. He has the perfect voice for that and he knows how to use it.

„First Last Time“ by GHOST HOUNDS (Facebook) offers thoroughly captivating songs, which also bring strong country vibes to life. The songs „Here No More“ or the super rousing „Hot Dog“ are good examples of this. Of course, a cover of the classic „Country Roads“ also cuts a fine figure. But you can also enjoy groovy guitars in powerful songs such as „Dirty Angel“ or „Make It Shake“. I love this flair with piano and strings, which give the whole thing even more special atmosphere that carrys me away. There is a wide range of songs that illuminate many facets of rock and therefore have great entertainment value.

„Last Train To Nowhere“

TRÚSK

Túsk (Facebook / Bandcamp) from Ireland celebrated the release of their self-titled debut album this year. I immediately liked their authentic, lively style, which grabbed me straight away. It’s a really cool album that you should listen to. The guitars are in constant action and whip up the sound with awesome, wild solos. Singer Jamie shines with a very strong, fervent vocal performance. (Review)

TRÚSK come along with a very impressive debut album and present the finest blues rock. They offer a fine range of high-quality songs that are technically and technically beyond reproach.

BAD TOUCH

from England come along with a full load of good humor, which is reflected in every note of the album „Bittersweet Satisfaction“. This is a firework of good mood. BAD TOUCH (Facebook) have evolved nicely and just bang out 10 great hits. From casually cool, to catchy modern, to rousingly ecstatic, there’s the complete pampering program here. This album makes the sun shine even on the darkest of days. (Review)

For me, BAD TOUCH are one of the most positive bands I know. They are still a guarantee for first-class classic rock. On „Bittersweet Satisfaction“ they present themselves even more mature and versatile.

LUCIFER STAR MACHINE (Facebook) is one of them. The album „Satanic Age“ picked me up right from the first song and didn’t let go until the last. The songs gave me a hard time. On the one hand, the band grinds the flesh off your bones with a rough, hard grit, but on the other hand, they are able to mill great melodies into the songs with a fine touch that you can’t help but fall in love with. (Review)

LUCIFER STAR MACHINE have with their album „Satanic Age“ a red hot iron in the hellfire. There the devil himself goes completely crazy. This devilish party with demonically horny songs is the absolute blast.

PHIL CAMPBELL AND THE BASTARD SONS

Actually, I was sure that nobody could top LUCIFER STAR MACHINE, but then PHIL CAMPBELL AND THE BASTARD SONS (Facebook) came around the corner with their album „Kings Of The Asylum“. PHIL CAMPBELL AND THE BASTARD SONS have given their sound a nitro injection, so to speak. I can’t detect any misfires here. Because „Kings Of The Asylum“ goes all out without exception and offers a top-notch program of fantastic songs. That’s why I’m crowning „Kings Of The Asylum“ the rock ’n‘ roll album of the year.(Review)

The album „Kings Of The Asylum“ has big balls! It burns for the hot old school Rock ’n‘ Roll! Who is not carried away, is already under the earth. But even that should not be enough. Because for that sound even the dead rise from the graves and let their bare bones rattle and rock. Great album!

FORMOSA (Facebook) are now very successful on the road and have even launched their own festival, the ‚FORMOSA beer festival‘! And this is becoming increasingly popular in the German Ruhr region. (see report 2022 and report 2023). Bands even like to come from abroad to be a part of it. We at ‚metal-heads.de‘ are now official media partners of this great event since this year.

The current album „Bittersweet“ (review) is a beautiful pearl. FORMOSA have developed noticeably and have consistently come up with great songs.

RAVENSTINE (Facebook) were a mega surprise for me. As an international band (founded during the COVID 19 lockdown) they caused a stir in the scene with their self-titled debut. Since then, they have steadily increased their fan base. And it’s no wonder, because the musical quality is beyond reproach. The band consistently delivers banging rock songs, each with its own charm and some curious ideas (e.g. „Still Alive“). A rousing and biting album! So this band definitely deserves a place in the 2023 best list. (Review / Interview) And there’s some great news! Because the new album „2024“ will be presented on January 12.

TEMPLE BALLS (Facebook) from Sweden really hit it out of the park at the end of the year with their album „Avalanche“. The groovy hard rock sounds are refined with beautiful hooks and great sing-along choruses, resulting in the following:

With classic ingredients (from the 80’s), the masters of TEMPLE BALLS conjure up an exquisite rock mixture that is addictive. It’s the kind of album that you devour from beginning to end and start all over again. This rousing rock’n’roll music is made for parties!

„Trap“

JELUSICK

When it comes to technical perfection, JELUSICK (Facebook) is the right choice. Dino Jelusick is not only a brilliant singer, but also a great songwriter. There is no doubt about that. The debut „Follow The Blind Man“ has now been released with high standards for himself and his fellow musicians. Only the three ballads fall behind the rousing songs for me and don’t seem as spectacular as the other rousing songs, which are really damn great and are clearly among the best rock songs released this year. (Review)

The result is thrilling songs that really let it rip, but also have a progressive streak in some cases. Dino Jelusick is not the only top singer to deliver a great show. The entire band plays (technically) at a high level, resulting in a number of excellent rock songs.

„Acid Rain“

This band has created the Hardrock album of the year for me. „Wheels Of Fortune“ simply enchanted me with its 80s charm. On the album, FRONT ROW WARRIORS (Facebook) not only give us songs with impeccable craftsmanship, but they also exude their very own charm, which singer Elkie Gee plays a big part in. She has a great voice and delivers a more than convincing performance here. The songs also explore the boundaries of melodic/heavy metal. I even like the power ballad „Love Is Not A Game“ with its magnificent chorus. Listen to this crazy keyboard solo in combination with the great guitar solo on „Wheel Of Fortune“!!!! And this chorus is simply to kneel down! (Review / Interview)

FRONT ROW WARRIORS deliver a perfect album with „Wheel Of Fortune“. There is nothing to criticize here. It is a colorful feast of individual songs that have been composed with great attention to detail and a deft touch for atmospheric elements. The Swedish band S.O.R.M. (Facebook) has actually released the album of the year for me in Heavy Rock. „Under My Skin“ is the name of the grab bag with all kinds of bangers, which also has some soulful moments. Micke Holm has a brilliant voice that inevitably reminds me of Blackie Lawless from W.A.S.P., only even more powerful. The trio rocks a damn strong sound. With „I Die For My Rock N Roll“, they also like to drift into the hard rock genre and come up with an ingenious party anthem or get emotional and create a soulful performance with „Under My Skin“. Apart from that, there are plenty of surprises, all of which are convincing. And it’s also pretty damn heavy. (Review)

With „Under My Skin“, S.O.R.M are sending a pure Heavy Rock album into the race. It is a „Hellride“ that also goes „Under The Skin“. This is best entertainment . CARBELLION (Facebook) aus Southeastern Wisconsin waren schon einmal zu Gast hier bei ‚metal-heads.de‘. In einem coolen Interview inklusive toller Fotos durften wir einiges über die Band erfahren.

Nun kommt am 17. März das neue Album „Weapons Of Choice“ raus. Ganze 10 Knaller erwarten euch. Und es beginnt mit einer

Kneipenschlägerei

„Barfight“ ist der Opener des Albums. Erdige schwere Rockvibes erschüttern die Boxen und der flotte Smasher marschiert voran. Das sehr lustig aufgemachte Video ist der Hammer! Man beachte diesen nostalgischen SHARP-Röhren-Fernseher. Wie geil ist das denn! Der Song jedenfalls tritt der Dekadenz gehörig in den Arsch, auch wenn der Ausgang der „Schlägerei“ dann doch anders kommt als erwartet. Steckt doch mehr in dem feinen Schnösel als man denkt.

Der Sound ist purer Rock’n Roll und punktet mit jaulenden Gitarren, schmissigen Riffs und einem schwer schwingenden Bass. Man bekommt also genau das, was man von einem authentischen old school Rocksound erwartet. Zieht’s Euch rein!

CARBELLION sind ein fetter V8-Big Block

Dementsprechend klingt der Song fett und schwer. Darüber fegt immerzu eine spielfreudige Lead-Gitarre und der wummernde Bass ist ein permanenter Begleiter, der zu jeder Zeit präsent ist und einen fetten Groove erzeugt. Und ich finde, dass das genauso sein muss! Der Sound klingt so authentisch als hätte man ihn in einem Rutsch bei einem feuchtfröhlichen Studiogig mitgeschnitten. Hier wird nichts im Sound beschönigt. Der Sound ist direkt und hart mit Ecken und Kanten. Das ist wie Autofahren ohne unnötige neumodische elektrische Fahrassistenzsysteme.

Die Band mag es laut und schnell, wenn man sich so Songs wie beispielsweise „Barfight“, „Listen For Ghosts“ oder „Pity The Backseat“ anhört. Doch damit ist das Repertiore nicht erschöpft. CARBELLION können auch mal den Fuß vom Gas nehmen, verlassen die Piste und fahren querfeldein über Stock und Stein. Auch das schüttelt ordentlich durch wie z.B. das düstere „Weapons Of Choice“ beweisen. „Origin“ vereint sogar beide Welten in sich.

Für mich könnten CARBELLION gerne noch wilder sein, stellenweise noch mehr aufs Gas treten und den Nitro Boost einschalten. Mir würde auch noch die eine oder andere Nummer gefallen, die etwas eingängiger klingt. So wie z.B. der…

„Jungle Song“

Dieser Track nimmt eine Sonderrolle auf dem Album ein, aber eine sehr coole. Der Song beginnt für CARBELLION ungewöhnlich ruhig und sehr entspannt. Ich könnte auch die Begriffe „bekifft“ oder „maximal lässig“ verwenden. Plötzlich setzt der Song aber Energie frei und die Gitarren schreien wieder. Der Song lebt dann im folgenden von dem Wechsel dieser lässigen ruhigen Phasen mit den wilden Höhepunkten. Ich liebe diesen Song, weil er eben anders ist. Für mich eine richig coole Nummer!

Fazit

CARBELLION rocken mit satten 10 Krachern auf ihrem Album „Weapons Of Choice“. Ihre Waffen der Wahl sind kreischende Gitarrenleads, brettharte Riffs, ein wuchtiger groovender Bass, lebendige Drums und ein dreckige Rockröhre am Mikro. Alle Waffen zusammen ergeben einen energiegeladenen musikalischen Angriff, der alle Kolben zum Glühen bringt und die Maschine unter Feuer setzt. Barfight

„Barfight“ is the album’s opener. Earthy heavy rock vibes shake the speakers and the snappy smasher marches ahead. The very funny video is awesome! Note that nostalgic SHARP tube TV. How cool is that! The song in any case kicks the decadence properly in the ass, even if the outcome of the „brawl“ then comes differently than expected. Is but more in the fine schnoz than one thinks.

The sound is pure rock’n roll and scores with howling guitars, snappy riffs, a heavy swinging bass and lively drums. So you get exactly what you expect from an authentic old school rock sound. Check it out!

CARBELLION are a V8-Big Block

Accordingly, the song sounds fat and heavy. Over it sweeps constantly a playful lead guitar and the booming bass is a permanent companion, which is present at all times and creates a fat groove. And I think that’s exactly how it should be! It sounds as authentic as if it had been recorded in one go at studio gig with a few cold beers included. Nothing is glossed over in the sound here. The sound is direct and hard with rough edges. This is like driving a muscle car without unnecessary newfangled electric driver assistance systems.

The band likes it loud and partly fast, if you listen to songs like „Barfight“, „Listen For Ghosts“ or „Pity The Backseat“. But this is not the end of the repertoire. CARBELLION can also take their foot off the gas, leave the track and drive cross-country over hill and dale. Also this shakes properly as e.g. the gloomy „Weapons Of Choice“ prove. „Origin“ even combines both worlds in itself.

For me, CARBELLION could be even wilder, step on the gas even more in places and turn on the nitro boost or creating some crazy u turns. I would also like the one or other number that sounds a bit catchier. Like for example the…

„Jungle Song“

This track takes a special role on the album, but a very cool one. The song starts unusually calm and very relaxed for CARBELLION. I could also use the terms „stoned“ or „maximum casual“. But suddenly the song releases energy and the guitars scream again. The song then lives in the following from the alternation of these casual quiet phases with the wild climaxes. I love this song because it is different. For me a really cool thing!

CARBELLION (Facebook ) sind waschechte Amerikaner, die mit ihrem authentischen Heavy Rock die Straßen und Hütten brennen lassen. Diese Jungs rocken wie ein fetter V8 Big Block! Es ist wie immer gesagt: Es gibt keinen Ersatz für Hubraum außer…. mehr Hubraum!

Und ich denke, dass die Amis uns auch hierzulande mit ihrem PS-starken Sound mächtig einheizen können.
Deshalb war es für mich ein Muss, diese Band in unserem Land vorzustellen. Ein Live-Konzert mit CARBELLION ist auf jeden Fall ein Burner, denn sie liefern wirklich eine heiße Show ab, die das Fan-Publikum zum Kochen bringt. Einige Videos zeugen davon. Die Band gibt es seit 2004 und ich habe noch nichts von ihnen gehört. Das kann doch nicht wahr sein! Dabei haben sie in Amerika schon hunderte von Shows in mehreren Bundesstaaten abgerockt.

Deshalb bin ich froh, dass Sänger Cameron mich in die Welt von CARBELLION eintauchen lässt. Einen kleinen Vorgeschmack bekommt man mit dem Video zu dem Song „Without A Trace“ von der EP „In Due Time“. Ein authentisches unterhaltsames Video, dass einen schönen Einblick in die Welt von CARBELLION liefert. (Ich wurde beim Ansehen und Anhören direkt ziemlich durstig.)

Lange Freundschaften, die zusammenschweißen

MH: Hi Cameron, viele Grüße von ‚metal-heads.de‘ über den großen Ozean nach Amerika. CARBELLION sind keine Newcomer. Ihr seid schon eine ganze Weile im Musikgeschäft, genauer gesagt seit 2004.
Wo genau kommt Ihr her?

Cameron: CARBELLION kommen aus Plymouth, Wisconsin, USA. Plymouth ist keine große Stadt, aber die Bandmitglieder haben sich auf andere Städte in Wisconsin verteilt, darunter Milwaukee, Racine und Sheboygan. Plymouth ist unser zentraler Ort zum Proben und Schreiben.

MH: Wie habt ihr euch damals kennengelernt?

Cameron: Die Gründungsmitglieder, die noch in der Band sind (Cameron Kellenberger und Brandon Bauer), waren in zwei verschiedenen Bands, die befreundet waren und oft zusammen auftraten. Die Bands hießen CARBON PARLOR und WHISKEY REBELLION. Wir sind schon eine sehr lange Zeit befreundet.

MH: Das ist insofern interessant, als dass ihr die ganze Zeit über ein fast stabiles Line-Up hattet, richtig?

Cameron: Das Line-Up hat sich im Laufe der Zeit nur ein wenig verändert. Wie schon erwähnt, sind die Gründungsmitglieder, Cameron und Brandon, seit 2004 original. Der Lead-Gitarrist, Jamie Damrow, kam 2007 dazu, war aber eigentlich bis 2018 der Schlagzeuger! Brent Nimz hat 2018 das Schlagzeug übernommen, als Jamie zur Leadgitarre wechselte. Steve Sheppard kam 2015 am Bass hinzu. Der ursprüngliche Bassist (Steve Richgruber) und der Leadgitarrist (Peter Ruesch) sind jedoch Freunde geblieben.

MH: Das ist ziemlich ungewöhnlich für Bands mit einer langen Geschichte.

Cameron: Es ist ein bisschen ungewöhnlich, dass wir das alles zusammengehalten haben, auch wenn wir schon so lange eine tourende, aber unabhängige Band ohne Major-Label-Unterstützung sind!

Vorliebe für heiße Kisten

MH: Der Bandname CARBELLION wurde wohl nicht umsonst gewählt. Ihr seid Fans von großen Motoren.
Wie drückt sich eure Leidenschaft für Autos und Motorräder aus?

Cameron: Es ist auf jeden Fall im Vibe der Musik. Wir haben auch einige Songs mit Texten geschrieben, die direkt vom Rennsport handeln. Wir haben einen Song namens „TOP ALCOHOL“ auf der 2009er LP „THE HORSE“ für einen Kindheitsfreund von mir namens Andy Bohl geschrieben, der professionell in der NHRA in den USA in der Top Alcohol Funny Car Klasse Rennen fährt. Sein 1970er Cuda aus der Zeit, als wir jünger waren, ist auch das Auto auf dem Cover des VILLAINS-Albums!

MH: Welche Fahrzeuge habt Ihr so in der Garage?

Cameron: Ich persönlich habe eine 2004 Victory Vegas Bobber und 2012 Victory Vegas Crossroads Motorräder in meiner Garage.

Brandon hat einen klassischen Chevy Pickup aus den frühen 70ern und ein paar Harley Davidsons.

Jamie fährt eine Harley Davidson Street Glide, die aufgemotzt ist.

Brent hat unter anderem einen schwarz auf schwarz lackierten Dodge Challenger mit einem Big-Block-Hemi-Motor.

MH: Was würdest Du tun, wenn ein Liter Benzin 2 Dollar kosten würde (wie in Deutschland)?

Cameron: Rationieren… LOL! Es wäre hart, aber wir würden das Fahren wohl einschränken, bevor wir unser Spielzeug ganz aufgeben würden.

Musik als Ventil

MH: Haben Eure Hauptjobs etwas mit Musik zu tun oder ist Musik nur der notwendige Ausgleich, um sich auszutoben?

Cameron: Ein bisschen von beidem. Ich arbeite hauptberuflich in der Branche für Live Nation und habe daher das Glück, mit Veranstaltern, Bands, Sportteams, Festivals usw. zu arbeiten. Das hat mir sicherlich geholfen, CARBELLION in den letzten 15+ Jahren zum Erfolg zu führen! Die anderen Jungs arbeiten in anderen Branchen, haben aber eine starke Leidenschaft für die fast Vollzeitarbeit, die in der Band steckt.

Cameron: Inwieweit bestimmt die Musik euren Alltag?

Cameron: Sie hat viel mit jedem von uns zu tun. Sie bedeutet Flucht und Druckabbau. Sie ist die Stimme und Plattform für das, was wir musikalisch und kulturell ausdrücken möchten.

Die Welt ist kein friedlicher Ort

MH: Eure Musik steht für bissigen Rock’n Roll, der mit ausgelassener Stimmung auch für viel Spaß sorgt! Allerdings sind die Texte oft nicht fröhlicher Natur.
Was für Themen behandelst du in deinen Songs?

Cameron: Ich habe im Laufe der Jahre Songs mit Texten zu den unterschiedlichsten Themen geschrieben. Einige Songs erzählen Geschichten, die lustig sein können (ONE NIGHT STAND von THE HORSE LP), sarkastisch (SAPPHIRE EYES von VILLAINS), verbittert (EX-CHANGER von der IN DUE TIME EP), rachsüchtig (DARKHORSE von der IN DUE TIME EP) und sogar gedämpfte Wut (LISTEN FOR GHOSTS- neue Single).

Die meisten Themen sind nicht glücklich, denn die Welt um uns herum ist nicht gerade ein friedlicher Ort ohne Konflikte, die gelöst werden müssen. Die neue LP, die später in diesem Jahr erscheint, wird viele der Emotionen und Themen abdecken, die an der Spitze der heutigen Situation stehen. Wir versuchen nicht, jemandem vorzuschreiben, wie er denken oder fühlen soll, aber wir möchten die Hörer dazu inspirieren, beides zu tun.

Verrückte Amerikaner

MH: Wie viele Shows habt Ihr bisher gespielt?

Cameron: Zu viele, um sie zu zählen! Ich habe vor Jahren aufgehört, die Shows genau zu zählen. 2010 waren es über 300, also können Sie sich vorstellen, bei wie vielen wir jetzt sein könnten.

MH: Welche Staaten in den USA habt ihr bereist?

Cameron: CARBELLION hat über 20 Staaten bereist, vor allem den Mittleren Westen (Minnesota, Iowa, Indiana, etc), den Süden (Florida, Texas, Alabama, Louisiana, etc) und den Westen (Kalifornien, Arizona, New Mexico, etc).

MH: Wo leben die verrücktesten Amerikaner und wie drückt sich ihre Verrücktheit aus?

Cameron: Ich würde sagen, die verrückteste Zeit habe ich zu Hause in Wisconsin oder in Texas verbracht. Texas hat sich aus irgendeinem Grund immer wie eine zweite Heimat für uns angefühlt – lol!

CARBELLION sorgen für Stimmung

MH: Was war das verrückteste Erlebnis bei einem eurer Gigs?

Cameron: Da gibt es so viele! Alkoholgeschwängerter Blödsinn war schon immer ein Teil der Geschichte von CARBELLION….

MH: Oder sind alle eure Gigs verrückt?

Cameron: Die meisten unserer Live-Shows haben uns den Ruf eingebracht, eine sehr rowdyhafte Band zu sein. Während und nach den Konzerten sind wir sehr interaktiv mit dem Publikum, was uns geholfen hat, einige großartige Freundschaften zu schließen und unsere Fanbase in den ganzen USA zu vergrößern. Wir sind bekannt dafür, dass wir Bierrunden und Shots mit ganzen Veranstaltungsorten teilen! Wir dulden auch keinen Scheiß von Fans, die andere Fans schlecht behandeln. Es geht um eine gute Zeit und wir sind nicht die Art von Band, die sich das von irgendjemandem vermasseln lässt, wenn Du weißt, was ich meine.

MH: Wie sieht es mit Ihren Charaktereigenschaften aus? Wie würdest du die Band CARBELLION in einer kurzen Art und Weise beschreiben?

Cameron: Das ist schwierig! Ich würde sagen: CARBELLION sind frech, aufgeschlossen, intensiv und leidenschaftlich mit einem kräftigen Schlag schwerer Riffs.

Konzerte als intensives Erlebnis

MH: Was macht für dich ein gutes Konzert oder eine gute Live-Band aus?

Cameron: Ich persönlich mag die Präsenz in den Auftritten einer Band. Wenn eine Band in einem Club mit 25 Leuten die gleiche Intensität haben kann wie auf einem Festival mit 10.000 Leuten, dann ist das das einzig Wahre. Ich mag es, Blut, Schweiß und Rock n‘ Roll auf der Bühne zu sehen.

MH: Hast Du die Bühne jemals nüchtern verlassen?

Cameron: LOL! Ja, sogar mehr als in anderen Zuständen. Ich möchte, dass die Fans das Beste bekommen, was ich zu dem Zeitpunkt bieten kann, wenn wir auf der Bühne stehen. Aber nach den Shows… das steht auf einem anderen Blatt!

MH: Welches Getränk darf auf einem Konzert auf keinen Fall fehlen?

Cameron: Bourbon (viele gute Optionen), Jack Daniels, Tequila (alles geht, aber Don Julio ist eine Präferenz), etc. bei Bier sind Coors Light, Miller High Life und Lone Star (wenn man in Texas ist) ein Muss.

Pandemiesituation in Amerika

MH: Wie habt Ihr die Pandemiezeit in den USA bisher erlebt?

Cameron: Es war auf jeden Fall hart. Glücklicherweise habe ich keine Verluste von Freunden oder Familie zu beklagen, wie so viele andere.

Es hat CARBELLION dazu gebracht, in der Zeit, in der wir keine Shows gespielt haben, eine Menge neues Material zu schreiben. So waren wir in der Lage, eine neue Full-Length-LP zusammenzustellen, die später in diesem Jahr veröffentlicht wird.

MH: Wie kompensiert ihr diese Einschränkungen, die fast jeden Spaß und jedes Feiern verhindern?

Cameron: Es war wirklich hart, um es mal so zu sagen. Die Menschen brauchen die Interaktion mit anderen Menschen für unsere geistige Gesundheit. Aus diesem Grund sind wir in der ganzen Geschichte Stammeswesen. Kleinere private Zusammenkünfte mit Familie und Freunden, sobald die Dinge im Sommer und Herbst 2020 Gestalt annahmen, sind es, wie ich persönlich es durchgestanden habe.

MH: Wie ist die aktuelle Situation in den USA?

Cameron: Es geht wieder aufwärts, was großartig ist. Zwischen den verfügbaren Impfungen, der Herdenimmunität und dem Rückgang von Krankenhausaufenthalten und Todesfällen kehrt das Wohlbefinden im Umgang mit Menschen schnell zur Normalität zurück. Die Gesellschaft braucht das bei all der Polarisierung, die zwischen den verschiedenen politischen, religiösen und kulturellen Unterschieden besteht.

Die Bedeutung von Freiheit

MH: Was bedeutet „Freiheit“ für Dich?

Cameron: Ist „Freiheit“ nicht nur ein anderes Wort für „nichts mehr zu verlieren“? LOL, natürlich ein Scherz, der einen Kris Kristofferson-Text zitiert, der durch Janis Joplin berühmt wurde. Ganz im Ernst: Für mich bedeutet „Freiheit“, dass man selbst entscheiden kann, was man will, solange es anderen nicht direkt schadet. Die Welt ist im Moment so polarisiert, die Politik wird zur Religion als Glaubenssystem. Es ist eine Kultur, die gegen dieses oder jenes ist, anstatt für dieses oder jenes zu sein.

Es gibt viel zu viel Abschottung und Kategorisierung von Menschen auf der Grundlage von Rasse, Religion, Geschlecht anstatt ihrer charakterlichen Qualität. Menschen können und sollten unterschiedliche Gedanken, Gefühle und Meinungen haben. Das ist es, was „Freiheit“ erlaubt.

Knifflig wird es, wenn Entscheidungen für große Gruppen oder Gesellschaften getroffen werden müssen. Entscheidungen müssen für eine Gruppe auf der Grundlage der positiven Auswirkungen für den höchsten Prozentsatz der Menschen in dieser Gruppe logisch und nicht emotional getroffen werden. Das ist natürlich sehr schwierig, wenn Ausreißer von der positiven Auswirkung einer Regierungsentscheidung ausgeschlossen werden könnten.

„Freiheit“ erlaubt es Individuen aber auch, sich in Gruppen oder Gesellschaften mit ihren gemeinsamen Zielen und Bestrebungen zusammenzuschließen. Schwerer Stoff, über den man nachdenken muss.

Neues Album dieses Jahr

MH: Eure letzte EP „In Due Time“ wurde 2019 veröffentlicht. Habt ihr ein neues Album in Arbeit? Was sind eure Pläne für die Zukunft?

Cameron: Ja, auf jeden Fall! Wir sind sehr aufgeregt über eine neue Full-Length-LP, an der wir gearbeitet haben und die wir nun während des Covid 19 Shutdowns aufgenommen haben. Die Songs decken eine große Bandbreite unserer musikalischen Interessen ab. Textlich wird die neue Platte sowohl schwerere Themen umfassen, die von den sozialen Dilemmas des letzten Jahres inspiriert sind, als auch einige leichtere Storytelling-Songs. Wir planen eine Veröffentlichung im Herbst/Winter 2021 und werden uns bald bei verschiedenen Independent-Labels umsehen, mit denen wir für Marketing und Vertrieb zusammenarbeiten.

Musikalische Gedanken zu Deutschland

MH: Was ist das erste, was Ihnen in Verbindung mit Europa und Deutschland im Besonderen einfällt?

Cameron: Rock n‘ Roll in all seiner Pracht und Vielfalt ist in Europa und Deutschland lebendig und gut! In den USA hat man das Gefühl, dass er etwas aus dem Mainstream herausgerutscht ist, was neue Rock/Metal/Punk-Bands angeht, die groß rauskommen. Viele Bands, die wir kennen, ziehen es derzeit vor, in Europa zu touren, anstatt in den USA. Das ist etwas, worüber wir auch schon diskutiert haben. MH: Gibt es eine deutsche Band, die Ihr gut findet? Welche anderen Bands sind eure Favoriten im Allgemeinen?

Cameron: Zwischen uns allen gibt es einige deutsche Bands, die wir nennen können. DESRUCTION, SODOM, KREATOR, RAMMSTEIN, SCORPIANS, ACCEPT, KMFDM, HELLOWEEN, TANKARD, WARLOCK/Doro Pesch, etc.

Was andere Einflüsse angeht, würde ich CLUTCH, DANZIG/MISFITS, CORROSION OF CONFORMITY, KYUSS, METALLICA, ALICE IN CHAINS, ACDC, THE BRONX, HELMET, QOTSA, WASP, etc. nennen. Das könnte eine wirklich große Liste werden!

CARBELLION rocken wie Sau! Wir haben es hier mit astreinem Heavy Rock zu tun, der gehörig Arschtritte verteilt und auch für ausgelassene Stimmung sorgt. Auf Bandcamp gibt es schon mehrere Alben von CARBELLION. Das Debütalbum „Villains“ ist sogar für lau und alle anderen Alben gibt´s für unter 10 Euro in einem Bundle. Heavy Rock with gasoline in the blood

CARBELLION (Facebook ) are real Americans who let the streets and the huts burn with their authentic Heavy Rock. These guys rock like a fat V8 big block It is like as always said: There is no substitute for displacement except…. more displacement!

And I think that the Yanks can also heat us up in this country with their powerful sound.
Therefore it was a must for me to introduce this band in our country. A live concert with CARBELLION is definitely a burner, because they really deliver a hot show that gets the fan audience running wild. Some videos testify to that. The band exists since 2004 and I haven’t heard anything from them yet. That can’t be true!

You can get a little foretaste with the video for the song „Without A Trace“ from the EP „In Due Time“. An authentic entertaining video that provides a nice insight into the world of CARBELLION. (I got quite thirsty while watching and listening to it).

Long friendships that weld together

MH: Hi Cameron, many greetings from ‚metal-heads.de‘ across the big ocean to America. CARBELLION are not newcomers. You have been in the music business for quite a while, since 2004.

Where exactly do you come from?

Cameron: Carbellion are based out of Plymouth, Wisconsin, USA. Plymouth is not a big city but the band members have been spread out between other Wisconsin cities including Milwaukee, Racine, and Sheboygan. Plymouth is our centralized location for rehearsal and writing.

MH: How did you get to know each other back then?

Cameron: The founding members still in the band (Cameron Kellenberger and Brandon Bauer) were in two different bands that were friends and performed together often, CARBON PARLOR and WHISKEY REBELLION. We are friends for a long time.

MH: That’s interesting in the sense that you’ve had a almost stable line-up all this time, right?

Cameron: The line up has changed a bit over time. As mentioned the founding members, Cameron and Brandon, are original since 2004. The lead guitarist, Jamie Damrow, joined in 2007 but was actually the drummer until 2018! Brent Nimz took over on drums in 2018 when Jamie moved to lead guitar. Steve Sheppard joined on bass in 2015. The original bass player (Steve Richgruber) and lead guitarist (Peter Ruesch) have remained friends however.

MH: That’s quite unusual for bands with a long history.

Cameron: It’s a bit different that we’ve held it all together while remaining a touring, yet independent, band without major label support as long as we have!

Love for hot engines

MH: The band name CARBELLION was probably not chosen for nothing. You are fans of big engines.

How does your passion for cars and bikes express itself? 

Cameron: It’s in the vibe of the music for sure. We’ve written some songs with lyrics that are directly about racing as well. We did a song called TOP ALCOHOL on 2009’s THE HORSE LP for a childhood friend of mine named Andy Bohl who races professionally in the NHRA in the USA in the Top Alcohol Funny Car class of racing. His 1970 Cuda from when we were younger is the car on the cover of the VILLAINS album as well!

MH: Which vehicles do you have in your garage?

I’ve personally got a 2004 Victory Vegas bobber and 2012 Victory Vegas Crossroads motorcycles in my garage.

Brandon has a classic early 70s stepside Chevy pickup and a few Harley Davidsons.

Jamie rides a Harley Davidson Street Glide that’s hot-rodded.

Brent has a black on black Dodge Challenger with a big block hemi engine.

MH: What would you do if one liter of gasoline would cost 2 dollar (like in Germany)?

Cameron: Ration… LOL! It would be tough but we’d share rides more often before we’d give up our toys.

Music for pressure relief

MH: Do your main jobs have something to do with music or is music just the necessary balance to let off steam?

Cameron: A bit of both. I work full time in the industry for Live Nation so I’ve been fortunate to work with promoters, bands, sport teams, festivals, etc. It certainly has helped me help navigate Carbellion through success the last 15+ years! The other guys work in different industry’s but maintain a strong passion for the near full time work that goes into the band.

MH: To what extent does music determine your everyday life?

Cameron: It has a lot to do with each of our lives. It means escape and pressure release. It’s the voice and platform for what we’d like to express musically and culturally.

The world is not a peaceful place

MH: Your music stands for heavy biting rock’n roll, which also provides a lot of fun with a boisterous mood! However, the lyrics are often not cheerful nature.

MH: What kind of topics do you deal with in your songs?

Cameron: I’ve written songs with lyrics on a wide variety of topics over the years. Some songs are storytelling which can be funny (ONE NIGHT STAND off THE HORSE LP), sarcastic (SAPPHIRE EYES off of VILLAINS), bitter (EX-CHANGER off of IN DUE TIME EP), vengeful (DARKHORSE off of IN DUE TIME EP), and even subdued rage (LISTEN FOR GHOSTS- new single). Most of the subject material isn’t happy as the world around us isn’t typically a peaceful place lacking conflict that needs resolution. The new LP coming out later this year will cover many of the emotions and topics that are at the forefront of the where things are at today. We aren’t trying to tell anyone how to think or feel but we’d like to inspire listeners to do both.

Crazy Americans

MH: How many shows have you played so far?

Cameron: Too many to count! I stopped tallying the shows accurately years ago. There were over 300 by 2010 so you can imagine how many we might be at now.

MH: Which states in the U.S. have you traveled to?

Cameron: Carbellion has toured in over 20 states throughout the midwest (Minnesota, Iowa, Indiana, etc), the South (Florida, Texas, Alabama, Louisiana, etc), and the West (California, Arizona, New Mexico, etc) for the most part.

MH: Where do the craziest Americans live and how does their craziness express itself?

Cameron: I would say the craziest times have been at home in Wisconsin or in Texas. Texas has always felt like a second home for us for some reason- lol!

CARBELLION kicks ass

MH: What was the craziest experience at one of your gigs?

Cameron: There are so many! Drunken shenanigans have always been part of the story with Carbellion….

MH: Or are all your gigs crazy?

Cameron: Most of our live shows have lead to us having a reputation for being a very rowdy band. We are highly crowd interactive during and after the sets which has helped us make some great friendships while growing our fanbase all across the US. We’ve been known to  share rounds of beers and shots with entire venues! We also don’t tolerate any sh!t from fans who treat other fans poorly. It’s about good times and we aren’t the type of band to let anyone screw that up if you know what I mean.

MH: What about your character traits? How would you describe the band CARBELLION in a short way?

Cameron: That’s tough! I would say bold, outgoing, intense, and passionate with big slabs of heavy riffs.

MH: What makes a good concert or a good live band for you?

Cameron: I personally like the reality in band’s performances. When a band can have the same intensity in a club with 25 people as they have at a festival with 10,000 then that is the real deal. I like to see blood, sweat, and rock n‘ roll on the stage.

Concerts as an intense experience

MH: Have you ever left the stage sober?

Cameron: LOL! Yeah, more often than not actually. I don’t want fans to not get the best I have at the time when we are on stage. Now after the shows… that can be a different story!

MH: Which drink should not be missing at a concert in any case?

Cameron: Bourbon (lots of good options), Jack Daniels, Tequila (anything goes but Don Julio is a preference), etc. For beer Coors Light, Miller High Life, and Lone Star (when in Texas) are a must have.

Pandemic situation in America

MH: How have you experienced the pandemic period in the U.S. so far?

Cameron: It’s been tough for sure. Fortunately I haven’t been touched with any losses of friends of family like so many others have. It has pushed Carbellion to write a ton of new material with our time not playing shows. That is how we’ve been able to pull a new full length LP together for release later this year.

MH: How do you compensate for these restrictions that prevent almost all fun and partying?

Cameron: It’s been really tough to say the least. People need to be interactive with other people for our mental health. We are tribal throughout history for that reason. Smaller private gatherings with family and friends once things started to take shape in the Summer and Fall of 2020 is how I personally got through it.

MH: What is the current situation in the U.S.A.?

Cameron: It’s opening back up which is great. Between vaccinations being available, herd ammunity, and hospitalizations/fatalities being way down, the comfort level with being around people is getting back to normal fast. Society needs this with all the polarization that exists between people’s different politics, religious beliefs, and cultural differences.

The meaning of freedom

MH: What means „Freedom“ for you?

Cameron: Isn’t „Freedom‘s just another word for nothing left to lose“? LOL, kidding of course quoting a Kris Kristofferson lyric made famous by Janis Joplin. In all seriousness „Freedom“ to me is about choice for oneself so long as it doesn’t directly harm others. The world is so polarized right now with politics becoming religion as a belief system. It’s a culture of against this or that instead of being for this or that.

There is far too much compartmentalizing and categorizing people based on race, religion, sex instead of their quality of character. People can and should have differing thoughts, feelings, and opinions. That is what „Freedom“ allows. It gets tricky when decisions have to be made for large groups or societies. Decisions need to be made for a group based on the positive impact for the highest percentage of the people in that group logically and not emotionally.

That is obviously really difficult when outliers could be left out of the positive affect of a governing decision. „Freedom“ also allows individuals to get into groups or societies with their common goals and aspirations also though. Heavy stuff to think about.

New album this year

MH: Your last EP „In Due Time“ was released 2019. Do you have a new album in the works? What are your plans for future?

Cameron: Yeah, for sure! We are very excited about a new full length LP we’ve been working on writing and now recording during the Covid 19 shutdowns. The songs cover a wide variety of our musical interests. Lyrically this new record will span heavier topics inspired by the social dilemas of the last year as well as some lighter hearted storytelling songs. Shooting for a Fall/Winter 2021 release and soon to be shopping around to some different independent labels to partner with for marketing and distribution. 

MH: What is the first thing that comes to your mind in connection with Europe and Germany in particular?

Cameron: Rock n‘ Roll in all of its glory and variety is alive and well in Europe and Germany! In the US it feels like it has slipped off the mainstream somewhat as far as new rock/metal/punk bands hitting it big. Many bands we know prefer touring in Europe over the US at this point. It is something we’ve been discussing as well. We’ve traditionally toured the Midwest, South, and West areas of the US but have strong relationships with some Scandanavian bands that are pushing to come over. We’d love to visit Germany!

MH: Is there a German band that you like? What other bands are your favorites in general?

Cameron: Between all of us there are some German bands we can call out. DESRUCTION, SODOM, KREATOR, RAMMSTEIN, SCORPIANS, ACCEPT, KMFDM, HELLOWEEN, TANKARD, WARLOCK/Doro Pesch, etc.
