Normalerweise erscheinen unserer Reviews vor dem offiziellen Release, aber das Album „The Silver Key“ von GJALLARHORN’S WRATH (Facebook) erlangte erst nach seinem Erscheinen zufällig beim Stöbern durch die Metalwelt meine Aufmerksamkeit. Da mir der Sound sehr gut gefiel, habe ich ein wenig recherchiert. Die internationale Band rekrutiert sich aus ehemaligen Mitgliedern der Band ‚Oblivion‘, die aber nicht mehr existent ist. GJALLARHORN’S WRATH markiert also eine neue Ära.

„The Silver Key“ ist also das Debüt der Band und nachdem ich das Album nun schon einige Male durchgehört habe, bin ich von der musikalischen Qualität sehr beeindruckt. Darüber hinaus ist die Produktion von sehr guter Qualität. Und die Band bzw. das Label hat sich nicht lumpen lassen und sogar ne Vinyl herausgebracht, die man hier beziehen kann:

Die Band bezeichnet ihre Musik als Melodic Black Metal. Kann man machen, aber ich würde es eher als Blackened Death Metal bezeichnen, denn sie bewegen sich definitiv nicht im Bereich des klassischen, rohen und manchmal chaotischen Black Metal. Stattdessen ist ihr Sound strukturierter, dichter und oft melodischer. Es gibt tiefe Gitarrenriffs und einen Mix aus dunklen gutturalen Growls und aufpeitschenden Screams. Aber es gibt auch die typischen Blastbeatgewitter, die über einen hereinprasseln und schnelle fiese Gitarren.

Das einminütige Intro setzt direkt das Thema der orchestralen Ausrichtung im Sound von GJALLARHORNS WRATH. Ein Erzähler baut den Spannungsbogen auf und alsbald setzt der Song „Wiccan Wyrd“, der sich erst einmal schwerfällig und düster seinen Weg bahnt. Die ochestralen Elemente sind wirklich von guter Qualität und lassen eine dichte Atmosphäre entstehen. Man muss nicht lange warten, bis der Song dann seine wilden Black Metal Qualitäten ausspielt. Aber der Song entblößt schon viele brachial doomige Elemente. Jedenfalls entsteht durch ein kompositorisch durchdachtes Konzept eine guter Spannungsbogen, der viel Drama aufbaut und nicht mit Eindrücken geizt. Macht euch am besten selber ein Bild.

„The Abysswalker“ bleibt größtenteils im Midtempo und, beeindruckt in der Mitte mit epischen Gitarrenläufen, und lässt die Black Metal Vibes nur sporadisch aufblitzen. „Fangs of Fate“ entfaltet dann wieder eine furiose Klanglandschaft. Der heroische Charakter des Stücks wird durch den gezielten Einsatz von Bläsern eindrucksvoll unterstrichen. Besonders spannend ist die Kombination aus bösartigen Screams und einem dezent melodischen Klangteppich in einem Teil des Songs – eine ungewöhnliche, aber wirkungsvolle Kontrastierung.

Im weiteren Verlauf entwickelt sich der Song zu einem regelrechten Wirbelsturm, dessen Dynamik überrascht und fesselt. Die Songstruktur bleibt unvorhersehbar, was den Spannungsbogen konstant aufrechterhält. Selbst für weiblichen Sirenengesang findet sich Raum – eine klangliche Erweiterung, die dem Stück zusätzliche Tiefe verleiht.

Bemerkenswert ist, wie die Band unterschiedlichste Elemente zu einem harmonischen Ganzen formt: orchestrale Wucht, technische Brillanz und emotionale Intensität greifen nahtlos ineinander. Ein starkes Statement, das neugierig auf mehr macht.

„Through The Gates Of The Silver Key“ spielt ebenfalls gekonnt mit den verschiedenen Elementen und entfacht ein loderndes Feuer. Er ist vielschichtig, dynamisch und dramaturgisch stark. Die Band jongliert hier mit orchestralen Elementen, melodischen Gitarrenläufen und harschen Ausbrüchen, ohne den roten Faden zu verlieren. Dagegen wirkt „Falcon Of Darkness“ leider sehr eindimensional. Ein Song, der so dahinplätschert und bei mir keinen bleibenden Eindruck hinterlässt.

Aber es bleiben noch drei Songs, um zum Ende noch mal richtig durchzustarten. „With Souls Reborn“ klingt wieder energischer, ein solider Track ohne Überraschungen. „Pain Remains The Core Of Thist World“ ist dann wieder ein Volltreffer. Dämonische Screams schneiden schmerzhaft wie eine Kreissäge. Stark auch, wie Sänger Alex die Lyrics ab Minute 04:18 rausschmettert. Hier entsteht wieder ein pompöses Klanggemälde, welches die Stärken der Band emporhebt. Der krönende Abschluss „Silent Scream“! Episch, emotional und klanglich überwältigend. Die Band zieht hier alle Register: symphonische Breite, aggressive Spitzen, und ein Gefühl von finaler Erlösung.

Fazit

Mit „The Silver Key“ legen GJALLARHORN’S WRATH ein Debüt vor, das weit über das hinausgeht, was man von einem Erstlingswerk erwarten würde. Extrem vielschichtiger Metal, der sich kraftvoll aus der Masse erhebt. Es ist ein kunstvolles Klanggemälde der Düsternis, das mit Raffinesse den Weg in epische Gefilde ebnet. Orchestrale Wucht trifft auf die rohe Brutalität des Black Metal – und verschmilzt zu einem monumentalen Erlebnis.

Normally our reviews appear before the official release, but the album „The Silver Key“ by GJALLARHORN’S WRATH (Facebook) caught my attention by chance after its release while browsing through the metal world. As I really liked the sound, I did a little research. The international band is recruited from former members of the band ‚Oblivion‘, which no longer exists. GJALLARHORN’S WRATH thus marks a new era.

So „The Silver Key“ is the band’s debut and after listening to the album a few times now, I’m very impressed by the musical quality. The production is also of very good quality. And the band, or rather the label, didn’t mess around and even released a vinyl, which you can buy here:

The band describes their music as melodic black metal. You can do that, but I would rather call it blackened death metal, because they are definitely not in the realm of classic, raw and sometimes chaotic black metal. Instead, their sound is more structured, denser and often more melodic. There are deep guitar riffs and a mix of dark guttural growls and whipping screams. But there are also the typical black metal blastbeat thunderstorms that crash over you and fast, nasty guitars.

The one-minute intro immediately sets the theme for the orchestral orientation of GJALLARHORNS WRATH’s sound. A narrator builds up the tension and soon the song „Wiccan Wyrd“ begins, ponderously and darkly paving its way. The orchestral elements are of really good quality and create a dense atmosphere. You don’t have to wait long for the song to display its wild black metal qualities. But the song already reveals many brute doomy elements. In any case, a well thought-out compositional concept creates a good arc of tension that builds up a lot of drama and is not stingy with impressions. It’s best to make up your own mind.

„The Abysswalker“ remains mostly mid-tempo and impresses in the middle with epic guitar runs, only sporadically flashing up the black metal vibes. „Fangs of Fate“ then unfolds another furious soundscape. The heroic character of the track is impressively underlined by the targeted use of brass. The combination of vicious screams and a subtly melodic soundscape in one part of the song is particularly exciting – an unusual but effective contrast.

As the song progresses, it develops into a veritable whirlwind whose dynamics surprise and captivate. The song structure remains unpredictable, which keeps the tension constant. There is even room for female siren vocals – a sonic extension that gives the piece additional depth.

It is remarkable how the band forms the most diverse elements into a harmonious whole: orchestral power, technical brilliance and emotional intensity intertwine seamlessly. A strong statement that makes you want to dive deeper into the sound.

„Through The Gates Of The Silver Key“ also plays skillfully with the various elements and ignites a blazing fire. It is multi-layered, dynamic and dramaturgically strong. The band juggles with orchestral elements, melodic guitar runs and harsh outbursts without losing the central theme. In contrast, „Falcon Of Darkness“ unfortunately seems very one-dimensional. A song that ripples along and doesn’t leave a lasting impression on me.

But there are still three songs left to really take off at the end. „With Souls Reborn“ sounds more energetic again, a solid track with no surprises. „Pain Remains The Core Of Thist World“ is then a great impression again. Demonic screams cut painfully like a buzz saw. The way singer Alex belts out the lyrics from minute 04:18 is also impressive. Once again, a pompous soundscape is created that highlights the band’s strengths. The crowning finale „Silent Scream“! Epic, emotional and sonically overwhelming. The band pulls out all the stops here: symphonic breadth, aggressive peaks and a feeling of final redemption.

Conclusion

With „The Silver Key“, GJALLARHORN’S WRATH present an album that goes far beyond what you would expect from a debut. Extremely multi-layered metal that rises powerfully above the crowd. It is an artistic sound painting of darkness that paves the way into epic realms with sophistication. Orchestral power meets the raw brutality of black metal – and merges into a monumental experience.
