Das letzte Album „The Witch Of The North“ der BURNING WITCHES (Facebook) liegt nun schon vier Jahre zurück. Mit ihrem traditionellen melodischen Heavy Metal können sie durchaus überzeugen, obwohl es mir persönlich häufig ne Spur zu seicht war. Aber mit einigen Songs haben sie mich echt abgeholt. Nachdem ich mir nun die Promo vom kommenden Album „Inquisition“ anhörte, erhärtete sich bei mir der Eindruck, dass die Songs dieses Mal noch mehr knallen werden. Diese Erwartung wird weiter durch das gelungenen actionreiche Cover-Artwork unterstützt.

Der Albumtitel „Inquisition“ ist ein hartes Thema. Es ist der Inbegriff des Krieges der Kirche gegen die Ungläubigen. Es war eine grausame Zeit im Mittelalter, in der die Kirche Gewalt und Folter für ihr Missionierung nutzte, um den christlichen Glauben zu verbreiten. Anders- oder Ungläubige sollten damit auf Spur gebracht werden. Schlimmer war es noch, wenn man als Hexe diffamiert und verurteilt wurde, um dann qualvoll auf dem Scheiterhaufen verbrannt zu werden. Das waren schon grausame Zeiten.

So ist das Intro schon mal sehr passend ausgewählt, dass eine recht unheilvolle Stimmung aufbaut und mit lateinischen Chören unterlegt ist. Und sobald der Song „Soul Eater“ aus den Boxen donnert, werde ich schlichtweg umgeblasen. Also von Zurückhaltung ist hier keine Spur. Die Hexen lassen es krachen und legen brachial los. Ohne die melodische Komponente außen vor zu lassen, schmieden sie die Songs mit verdammt harten Stahl. Was für ein grandioser Beginn! Ich bin sofort Feuer und Flamme!

Und auch „Shame“ kann mich völlig überzeugen! Ein wuchtiger Midtempo Stampfer, der ab und an etwas an Tempo zulegt. Der Refrain haut zudem richtig auf die Kacke. Die BURNING WITCHES kommen plötzlich mit einer guten Portion Düsternis rüber, die sie so bisher noch nicht gezeigt haben. Dagegen ist die vorab veröffentlichte Video-Single „The Spell Of The Skull“ im direkten Verhältnis noch recht harmlos gehalten, aber dennoch hörenswert. Aber so kräftig wie bei den ersten beiden Songs beißen sie hier nicht zu.

Beim Titelsong „Inquisition“ erwarte ich eine lodernde Feuersbrunst. Und was bekomme ich? Nun, es ist zwar kein Inferno, aber zumindest geht es wieder ne Spur knackiger zur Sache. Sehr gut gefällt mir das äußerst lebendige Gitarrenspiel mit seinen netten Details auch abseits der geilen Soli. Die Riffs sind ebenfalls sehr gelungen und sorgen für mucho Energie. Gesanglich hat sich ebenfalls einiges getan. Die Vocals haben noch mehr Power und Ausstrahlung. Da geht mächtig was ab. Zudem sind die mehrstimmigen Chorusse gut umgesetzt.

Mit „Burn In Hell“ erreicht man wieder den Siedepunkt. Der Song bläst zur Treibjagd. Ohne Pause geht es mit voller Attacke schonungslos voran. Ein Song voll nach meinem Geschmack. Also bisher ist es wirklich ein schönes abwechslungsreiches Album ohne einen Durchhänger. Da verzeihe ich auch die gefühlvolle Ballade „Release Me“, die eine wohlklingende Atempause verschafft.

„In For The Kill“ lässt dann wieder mehr die Muskeln spielen und kommt angriffslustig rüber. Mit „In The Eye Of The Storm“ und „Mirror Mirror“ folgen dann noch zwei sehr solide Tracks, die sich wacker schlagen, aber nicht mehr so richtig fett auf den Putz hauen. Dies gilt auch für den Song „High Priestess Of The Night“ in der Mitte des Albums.

Fazit

BURNING WITCHES lassen es mit „Inquisition“ gehörig krachen. Neben heiß lodernden Songs, die alles und jeden verschlingen, brennen die Songs auch mit vielen melodischen Flammen. Manchmal wird aus der Feuerbrunst eher ein gemütliches Lagerfeuer, was zwar auch seinen Reiz hat, aber ich persönlich hätte mir schon noch mehr Songs der knallharten wütenden Variante gewünscht. Aber insgesamt ist es wirklich eine schöne Mischung geworden, die auch für mich einige super starke Highlights liefert.

The last album „The Witch Of The North“ by BURNING WITCHES (Facebook) was released four years ago. Their traditional melodic heavy metal is quite convincing, although it was often a bit too shallow for me personally. But with some songs they really picked me up. After listening to the promo of the upcoming album „Inquisition“, I got the impression that the songs are going to be even more banging this time. This expectation is further supported by the successful, action-packed cover artwork.

The album title „Inquisition“ is a tough subject. It is the epitome of the church’s war against the unbelievers. It was a cruel time in the Middle Ages when the church used violence and torture for its missionary work to spread the Christian faith. The aim was to bring dissenters or unbelievers into line. It was even worse if you were defamed and condemned as a witch and then burned at the stake in agony. Those were cruel times.

Close to the theme the intro is very appropriately chosen, setting a rather ominous mood and accompanied by Latin choirs. And as soon as the song „Soul Eater“ thunders out of the speakers, I am simply blown away. So there is no trace of restraint here. The witches let it rip and let it rip. Without leaving out the melodic component, they forge the songs with damn hard steel. What a great start! I’m immediately on fire!

And „Shame“ is also completely convincing! A powerful mid-tempo stomper that picks up the pace from time to time. The chorus also really kicks ass. The BURNING WITCHES suddenly come across with a good dose of gloom that they haven’t shown before. In contrast, the pre-released video single „The Spell Of The Skull“ is still quite harmless in direct proportion, but still worth listening to. But it doesn’t bite as hard as the first two songs.

With the title track „Inquisition“, I expect a blazing inferno. And what do I get? Well, it’s not an inferno, but at least it’s a bit harder again. I really like the extremely lively guitar playing with its nice details, even apart from the great solos. The riffs also banging and provide a lot of energy. The vocals have even more power and charisma. There’s a lot going on. The polyphonic choruses are also well realized.

The boiling point is reached again with „Burn In Hell“. The song blows for a fight. Without a pause, it relentlessly goes full attack. A song totally to my taste. So far, it really is a nicely varied album without a let-up. I can forgive the soulful ballad „Release Me“, which provides a melodious respite.

„In For The Kill“ then flexes its muscles again and comes across as aggressive. With „In The Eye Of The Storm“ and „Mirror Mirror“, two more very solid tracks follow, which put up a good fight, but don’t really pack a punch. This also applies to the song „High Priestess Of The Night“ in the middle of the album.

Conclusion

BURNING WITCHES really let it rip with „Inquisition“. In addition to hot blazing songs that devour everything and everyone, the songs also burn with many melodic flames. Sometimes the blaze turns into more of a cozy campfire, which also has its charm, but personally I would have liked more songs of the hard-hitting, angry style. But all in all, it has become a really nice mixture, which also delivers some super strong highlights for me.
