Revolution Calling Festival 2024 – Der Report

[ENGLISH VERSION]

Was für ein Tag…ich bin immer noch total geflasht!

Auf nach Holland

Aber erst einmal zurück zum Anfang. Revolution Calling. Das ist nun zum 4. mal der Aufruf an die Hardcore-Jüngerschaft nach Eindhoven zu pilgern. Und sie kamen aus allen Herren Ländern – 49 verschiedene Nationen feierten zusammen am 23.11.24 ein Fest in den Glockenhallen (Klokgebouw) unserer niederländischen Nachbarn.

3 Konzerthallen, 27 Bands und eine Halle mit Fressmeile und Disco – dazu gleich mehrere Merchstände in den verschiedenen Hallen.

10 Uhr, Duisburg West. Kollege Treasureman, mit der Knipse bewaffnet, sammelte mich ein, um die Autobahn Richtung Holland zu nehmen und noch frühzeitig einen Parkplatz im nahegelegenen Parkhaus zu ergattern. Um 12:30 Uhr sollten sich nämlich bereits die Tore öffnen und vielleicht kommen wir ja was früher rein, um schon mal die Lage zu checken. 11:15 Uhr waren wir dann auch vor Ort, mussten dann aber erst einmal herausfinden, wo die Reporter reinkommen. Durch den Bauzaun gequetscht, die Fotopässe abgeholt, und dann standen wir auch schon mitten im Geschehen – alles noch so gut wie leer. WIE leer sollte sich am späten Nachmittag noch herausstellen!

Kurz vorab. Leider konnten wir aus diversen Gründen nicht alle Bands auf dem Revolution Calling Fest sehen und/oder fotografieren. Somit möge es uns verziehen sein, wenn eben diese hier leider unerwähnt bleiben.

Und dann ging´s los…

BULLBAR

Die erste Band des Tages für uns spielten mal direkt auf der Main Stage. Bullbar aus den Niederlanden starteten mit einem Set Oi-Punk, vor, zugegebenermaßen, noch recht wenigen Zuschauern. Kurz vor 13:00 Uhr war wohl für den ein oder anderen doch noch einen Ticken zu früh. Getränkemarken kaufen, erstes Merch ergattern, bevor es zu voll wird. Aber so ist ja leider oft bei Festivals; zu so früher Stunde ist es oft schwierig viel Leute zu motivieren. Schade eigentlich, denn mir haben die Jungs durchaus gut gefallen, obwohl Oi eigentlich nicht ganz so ganz meine Stilrichtung ist.

SWELL

Weiter ging´s dann in der zweitgrößten Halle im Klokgebouw auf der Stronger Stage mit Swell. „Groovy Ass Hardcore“ titulieren die Jungs aus Tilburg (NL) selbst ihre Musik. Groovy, funky, punky Hardcore – jo, das war ein gutes, wenn auch kurzes Stelldichein und ich werde im Nachgang unbedingt mal näher reinhören.

HETZE

Direkt weiter ging es dann mit Hetze aus Belgien. Furious Punk Violence. Kann man so stehen lassen. Mit 3 Mädels und einem männlichen Vertreter an den Trommeln ging es dann auch direkt von Anfang an ordentlich aggressiv zu Werke. Insbesondere Frontfrau Eva gab einem permanent das Gefühl, dass sie genau DIR ins Gesicht schreit. Der Kick Violence kommt insbesondere durch das Drumplay hinzu, kommt Schlagzeuger Viktor doch ursprünglich aus der Death Metal Szene.

PROWL

Dann kam für mich die erste Überraschung des Tages mit Prowl. Kannte ich nicht, hat mich aber sofort umgehauen; dachte nur: scheisse, wie geil sind die denn? – Mit einer Mixtur aus Hardcore und Thrash haben die 4 Jungs aus Kanada bei mir direkt einen Nerv getroffen. Werde ich unbedingt auf dem Schirm behalten!

UNDYING

Auf Undying war ich persönlich sehr gespannt. Hat sich die Band, wenn auch nicht in Ursprungsbesetzung, doch erst vor nicht all zu langer Zeit nach 16 Jahren wieder reformiert. Mit ihren Einflüssen aus dem Metalcore und Death Metal hatten die North Caroliner seinerzeit bei mir schon immer einen besonderen Stellenwert. Danke Revolution Calling, für diesen ersten Gänsehautmoment, wenn man Bands sehen darf, die man eigentlich bereits totgesagt hat.

ALL FOR NOTHING

All For Nothing wurden mir von Kollege Treasureman wärmstens ans Herz gelegt. Also nix wie hin vor die Stage. Die Rotterdamer Formation existiert auch bereits seit über 20 Jahren – Hardcore mit Einflüssen aus dem Metal und auch Punk Rock. Bisher irgendwie an mir vorübergegangen, leider. Aber was für eine Energie! Frontfrau Cindy van der Heijden hatte richtig Bock, genauso wie das Publikum. Ne Menge Leute haben hier textsicher mit ins Mic gegröhlt und auch anderweitig für einen wahrhaft großartigen Gig gesorgt! Geil und jederzeit wieder!

REPROACH

Dann wurde es noch intensiver mit Reproach – ich weiß nicht, ob man deren Musik richtig beschreiben kann. In die Fresse Core mit einer mehr als ordentlich Portion Fuck You Attitude. Sie selbst titulieren sich als Belgian Skatethrash mayhem. Ich fand´s jedenfalls sehr geil und werde die mir bei Gelegenheit wieder live reinziehen. Sehr intensiv!

MURPHY´S LAW

Und dann kam der erste Big Player auf meiner Liste – eigentlich direkt 2 – sehr zum Leid von mir, aber auch vielen vielen anderen spielten nämlich Murphy´s Law und Integrity zeitgleich! WTF!!! – Murphy´s Law haben jedenfalls ne echt große Fanbase: tummelten sich doch direkt mal CIV, Roger Miret, Vinnie Stigma, Craig Setari und viele andere auf der Bühne im Background rum! – Und was soll ich sagen – was für eine Stimmung! Ich musste mal direkt beim ersten Ton meine Kamera beschützen. Das Publikum anzuheizen war unnötig, voll auf die Omme! – Kollege Treasureman hat es auch nicht lange in vorderster Front ausgehalten, die Kamera sollte lieber in sichererer Entfernung das restliche Konzerte festhalten! Und spätestens als Frontmann Jimmy sich ne Bierdose schnappte und quasi fast direkt über mir rein gebissen hat brachte ich mich dann auch in Sicherheit! Meine Kamera war dem Jägermeister-Fan mal so was von scheißegal! 😉

Ich machte mich dann nach 3 Songs auf den Weg zu Integrity, während Treasureman den ML Gig noch zu Ende knipste!

INTEGRITY

Ja, Integrity – das war einer meiner MUST HAVES an diesem Tag! Seit frühester Jugend einer meiner Favourite Bands – ich musste ganz schön kämpfen, um halbwegs nah an die Bühne ranzukommen! Es war voll – richtig übel voll! Aber egal – als ich dann die Stimme von Dwid Hellion hörte bekam ich sofort Gänsehaut! Genauso rauh und dreckig, wie ich es kannte und auch erwartet habe. Dwid ist ja irgendwie quasi das einzige permanente Mitglied von Integrity und lebt mittlerweile in Belgien (ursprünglich aus Cleveland) – ansonsten spielten wohl bereits weit mehr als 50 verschiedene Musiker bei Integrity mit. So what! – Ich fand´s mehr als fett!!!

NO TURNING BACK

Im Anschluss dann die Band, die immer spielt: No Turning Back! Sänger und gleichzeitig Veranstalter Martijns Hausband heizte mal sofort mit lupenreinem Hardcore alter Schule ein. Die aus dem Nordbrabant stammenden Niederländer gibt es nunmehr auch schon seit bereits 27 Lenzen. Natürlich liess es sich Martijn nicht nehmen die ein oder andere Ansprache zu halten, den Fans den Bands und dem ganze Team rund ums Festival zu danken!

JUDGE

Und dann…ich war noch lange nicht „Fed Up!“…Judge! – Eine Koryphäe unter allen Hardcorekapellen! – Ich weiß nicht wie, aber ich hab mich noch nach ganz vorne durchgekämpft! Musste so sein. Und wieder musste ich meinen Fotoapparat verteidigen…gegen einen sehr widerspenstigen Stagediver, der wiederholt auf mich zu gesprungen ist! Egal! Und als dann Mike Judge gegen Ende auch noch rief: „It´s Clobbering Time!“ war gar kein Halten mehr!!! – Grüße an Lou! Get well!!! Ich glaube ich muss nicht groß beschreiben welch Offenbarung das für einen Hardcorefan erster Stunde war! Unglaublich! Danke!

ALL OUT WAR

All Out War! …machten dann die kleine Halle zur Warzone! Die Metalcore-Combo aus Newburgh, New York gibt es mit kurzen Unterbrechungen nun auch schon seit 2001. Die Band ist immer noch sehr aktiv, u.a. mit einem erst letztes Jahr erschienenem 8. Studioalbum (Celestial Rot). All Out War machen keine Kompromisse, kein Firlefanz, immer straight forward wie eine Dampfwalze, die alles nieder rollt! Abriss!

THE EXPLOITED

Während All Out War die kleine WARZONE-Stage in alle Einzelteile zerlegten, spielte zeitgleich auf der Revolution-Stage die schottische Hardcore-Punk-Legende THE EXPLOITED. Das Quartett um Gründungsmitglied und Edel-Anarchist Wattie Buchan hat mittlerweile mehr als 44 Jahre auf dem tätowierten und narbigen Buckel und somit fast das Rentenalter erreicht. Aber von Altersmilde und vor allem von Altersruhe war in den folgenden 60 Minuten absolut gar nichts zu spüren. Wattie war angepisst wie eh und je und beschimpfte alles und jeden mit einem freundlichen Fuck-You und reckte auch dementsprechend oft die Mittelfinger in die Luft. Dank einer herausragenden Setlist (angefangen mit Start a war über Chaos in my life, Troops of tomorrow bis zum unverwüstlichen Sex and violence) wurde vor der Bühne die Anarchie ausgerufen. Schön, Wattie und Co. nochmal live gesehen zu haben!

CIV

CIV – Benannt nach Frontmann Anthony Civarelli ist eine etwas eigenwillige Kapelle, die sich irgendwo zwischen Pop-Punk und Hardcore bewegt. Was auch der Grund dafür sein dürfte, dass sich da in Punkto Geschmack die Gemüter etwas streiten. CIV hatten sich eigentlich bereits 2000 aufgelöst und treten seit dem nur alle paar Jahre mal reunited wieder auf. So auch 2024, als Support für Shelter, und eben jetzt auf dem Revolution Calling! – Die Halle war bis zum Bersten voll! Party von der ersten Sekunde an! Das Publikum feierte CIV mächtig ab und auch ich hab mich sofort von der geilen Stimmung anstecken lassen!

AGNOSTIC FRONT

Ja…und jetzt standen einer der ganz großen New Hardcore Legenden auf dem Programm! Über Agnostic Front braucht man eigentlich nicht viele Worte verlieren. Nach Gründung 1982, Auflösung 1993 und Reunion 1998 treibt sich die Band um den charismatischen Gitarristen Vinnie Stigma bis heute auf der ganzen Welt umher. Vinnie ist Gründer der Band und letztes Gründungsmitglied, wobei Shouter Roger Miret seit 1983 quasi fast ebenfalls dazu zählt. Ich konnte AF bereits Ende Juni in Köln sehen und freute mich auf ein schnelles Wiedersehen mit dieser wirklichen geilen Liveband! Es ist wirklich erstaunlich welch große Spielfreude hier nach so vielen Jahren bei jedem Konzert immer noch das Publikum mitreißt. Und mit Gotta Go haben AF sowieso eine der größten Hardcorehymnen geschrieben – wenn hier die ganze Halle mitgröhlt ist Geierpelle garantiert!

UNBROKEN

Jetzt kam für mich dann endlich die Band, für die ich allein schon nach Eindhoven gereist wäre! – Eine Band, die mich seinerzeit geprägt hat mit ihrem Ausnahmewerk „Life. Love. Regret.“ und immer noch bei mir regelmäßig auf dem Plattenteller rotiert – insbesondere in schweren Zeiten hat mich diese Scheibe den Kopf hoch halten lassen! Dieses Album sollte am heutigen Abend zum 30 Jährigen gefeiert werden! Was mich dann allerdings erwartete hat bei Weitem noch alles übertroffen, was ich mir vorgestellt habe! Ich habe selten solch ein gewaltiges, emotionales, intensives Konzert erlebt! Scheiss auf Brügge…Unbroken sehen und sterben!

BIOHAZARD

So dermaßen geflasht von Unbroken hatte es die letzte Band des Abends tatsächlich schwer mich aus dieser Trance wieder rauszuholen. Biohazard in Urbesetzung auf dem Revolution Calling. Da nun keine andere Band mehr spielte wurde es dementsprechend voll in der Main Hall und ich konnte mich nur noch nach Balkonien hochkämpfen, um das Konzert zu sehen! – Kollege Treasureman war aber rechtzeitig da, um sich einen Platz am Bühnenrand zu sichern. – Wie oft habe ich Biohazard schon gesehen, gerade in den Anfangsjahren. Und die Jungs haben kein Bisschen an Charisma verloren. Billy ist immer noch agil auf der Bühne wie eh und jeh unterwegs – einfach nicht tot zu kriegen der Bursche! Einfach nur pure Spielfreude, die er immer noch versprüht. Was soll ich sagen: Biohazard from Brooklyn New York! – IN YOUR FACE!

Danke! Und bis nächstes Jahr!

Und so ging ein wirklich geiles Event nun dem Ende zu! Eindhoven hat gerufen, und alles ist gekommen, um das Klokgebouw in Schutt und Asche zu legen. Allein die 100% Barrierefreiheit, keine Fotograben macht dieses Event zu einem Erlebnis. Zu keiner Sekunde waren Berührungsängste zwischen Publikum und Bands zu spüren oder erwünscht. Jeder Hardcorefan war willkommen auf der Bühne zum Mitgröhlen oder Stagediven. Ganz wie in alten Zeiten! Das Billing war unbestritten phänomenal und ich glaube ich brauche mich nicht zu wiederholen, wer an diesem Tag alles die Bretter in Eindhoven bestiegen hat!

Ein ganz großes Lob an den Veranstalter, dass er all diese Bands zu sich gelockt hat. Die komplette Organisation und Stimmung waren beeindruckend! Und wir freuen uns bereits jetzt auf ein hoffentliches Wiedersehen im nächsten Jahr!

REVOLUTION CALLING 2024 – the report

What a day…I’m still totally blown away!

Off to Holland

But first back to the beginning. Revolution Calling. This is now the 4th time that the hardcore disciples have made a pilgrimage to Eindhoven. And they came from all over the world – 49 different nations celebrated a festival together on 23.11.24 in the bell halls (Klokgebouw) of our Dutch neighbours.

3 concert halls, 27 bands and a hall with a food court and disco – plus several merch stands in the various halls.

10 a.m., Duisburg West. My colleague Treasureman, armed with a camera, collected me to take the motorway towards Holland and get a parking space in the nearby multi-storey car park early. The gates were due to open at 12.30pm and we might be able to get in a little earlier to check out the situation. We arrived at 11.15am, but first had to find out where the reporters could get in. We squeezed through the site fence, collected our photo passes and then we were right in the middle of the action – everything was still pretty much empty. Just how empty we were to find out in the late afternoon!

A few words in advance. Unfortunately, for various reasons, we weren’t able to see and/or photograph all the bands at Revolution Calling Fest. So please forgive us if these are not mentioned here.

And then it started…

BULLBAR

The first band of the day for us played directly on the Main Stage. Bullbar from the Netherlands started with a set of Oi-Punk in front of, admittedly, still quite a small audience. Shortly before 13:00 was probably a bit too early for some of us. Buying drink tokens, getting hold of the first merch before it got too crowded. But unfortunately that’s often the case at festivals; it’s often difficult to motivate many people at such an early hour. A pity really, because I quite liked the guys, although Oi is not really my style.

SWELL

The show continued in the second largest hall in the Klokgebouw on the Stronger Stage with Swell. The guys from Tilburg (NL) describe their music as ‘groovy ass hardcore’. Groovy, funky, punky hardcore – yep, it was a good, albeit short show and I will definitely listen to it more closely afterwards.

HETZE

The show continued directly with Hetze from Belgium. Furious Punk Violence. You can leave it at that. With 3 girls and a male representative on the drums, they were really aggressive right from the start. Front woman Eva in particular constantly gave you the feeling that she was screaming in YOUR face. The kick of violence was added by the drumming in particular, as drummer Viktor originally comes from the death metal scene.

PROWL

Then came the first surprise of the day for me with Prowl. I didn’t know them, but I was immediately blown away; I just thought: shit, how cool are they? – With a mixture of hardcore and thrash, the 4 guys from Canada immediately struck a chord with me. I’ll definitely keep them on my radar!

UNDYING

I was personally very excited about Undying. The band had reformed not too long ago after 16 years, even if not in its original line-up. With their influences from metalcore and death metal, North Carolinians have always had a special place in my heart. Thank you Revolution Calling for this first goosebump moment, when you are allowed to see bands that have already been declared dead.

ALL FOR NOTHING

All For Nothing were warmly recommended to me by my colleague Treasureman. So off we went to the stage. The Rotterdam band has been around for over 20 years – hardcore with influences from metal and punk rock. Unfortunately, I’ve somehow missed them so far. But what an energy! Front woman Cindy van der Heijden was really up for it, as was the audience. A lot of people sang along into the mic and made for a really great gig! Awesome and anytime again!

REPROACH

Then it got really intense with Reproach – I don’t know if you can describe their music properly. In your face core with a more than decent portion of fuck you attitude. They call themselves Belgian Skatethrash mayhem. In any case, I thought it was very cool and will see them live again when I get the chance. Very intense!

MURPHY´S LAW

And then came the first big player on my list – actually 2 – much to my chagrin, but also to the chagrin of many others, Murphy’s Law and Integrity played at the same time! WTF!!! – Murphy’s Law have a really big fanbase: CIV, Roger Miret, Vinnie Stigma and many others were on stage in the background! – And what can I say – what an atmosphere! I had to protect my camera right from the first note. Heating up the audience was unnecessary, full on! – My colleague Treasureman didn’t last long at the front either, the camera was better off capturing the rest of the concert from a safer distance! And at the latest when frontman Jimmy grabbed a can of beer and bit into it almost directly above me, I got myself to safety! The Jägermeister fan didn’t give a shit about my camera 😉

After 3 songs I made my way to Integrity, while Treasureman finished the ML gig!

INTEGRITY

Yes, Integrity – that was one of my MUST HAVES on this day! One of my favourite bands since my early youth – I had to fight hard to get halfway close to the stage! It was packed – really packed! But no matter – when I heard the voice of Dwid Hellion I immediately got goose bumps! Just as rough and dirty as I knew and expected. Dwid is somehow the only permanent member of Integrity and now lives in Belgium (originally from Cleveland) – apart from that, more than 50 different musicians have played with Integrity. So what! – I thought it was more than great!!!

NO TURNING BACK

Followed by the band that always plays: No Turning Back! Singer and organiser Martijn’s house band immediately fired things up with flawless old-school hardcore. The Dutch band from North Brabant have been around for 27 years now. Of course Martijn didn’t miss the opportunity to give a few speeches and thank the fans, the bands and the whole festival team!

JUDGE

And then…I was far from ‘Fed Up!’…Judge! – A luminary among all hardcore bands! – I don’t know how, but I fought my way to the very front! It had to be that way. And again I had to defend my camera…against a very stubborn stage diver who repeatedly jumped towards me! No matter! And when Mike Judge called out towards the end: ‘It’s Clobbering Time!’ there was no stopping me!!! – Greetings to Lou! Get well!!! I don’t think I have to describe what a revelation this was for a hardcore fan of the first hour! Unbelievable! Thank you!

ALL OUT WAR

All Out War! …turned the small hall into a warzone! The metalcore combo from Newburgh, New York has been around since 2001, with short interruptions, and is still very active, with an 8th studio album (Celestial Rot) released just last year. All Out War make no compromises, no frills, always straight forward like a steamroller that rolls everything down!

Demolition!

THE EXPLOITED

While All Out War were tearing the small WARZONE stage to shreds, Scottish hardcore punk legends THE EXPLOITED were playing on the Revolution stage at the same time. The quartet around founding member and noble anarchist Wattie Buchan now have more than 44 years under their tattooed and scarred belts and have almost reached retirement age. But there was absolutely no sign of old-age mellowness and, above all, old-age rest during the following 60 minutes. Wattie was as pissed off as ever and insulted everything and everyone with a friendly fuck-you and accordingly often raised his middle fingers in the air. Thanks to an outstanding setlist (starting with Start a war, Chaos in my life, Troops of tomorrow and the indestructible Sex and violence), anarchy was declared in front of the stage. Nice to have seen Wattie and co. live again!

CIV

CIV – named after frontman Anthony Civarelli – is a somewhat idiosyncratic band, somewhere between pop-punk and hardcore. Which is probably also the reason why opinions are somewhat divided when it comes to taste. CIV actually disbanded back in 2000 and have only reunited every few years since then. In 2024, as support for Shelter, and now at Revolution Calling! – The hall was full to bursting! Party from the very first second! The audience celebrated CIV wildly and I was immediately infected by the great atmosphere!

AGNOSTIC FRONT

Yes…and now one of the great New Hardcore legends was on the programme! You don’t really need to say much about Agnostic Front. Founded in 1982, disbanded in 1993 and reunited in 1998, the band around charismatic guitarist Vinnie Stigma is still travelling the world today. Vinnie is the founder of the band and the last founding member, whereby shouter Roger Miret has almost also been a member since 1983. I was able to see AF in Cologne at the end of June and was looking forward to a quick reunion with this really great live band! It’s really amazing how much enthusiasm they still have at every concert after so many years. And with Gotta Go, AF have written one of the greatest hardcore anthems anyway – when the whole hall is roaring along, vultures are guaranteed!

UNBROKEN

Now the band that I would have travelled to Eindhoven just for finally arrived! – A band that influenced me at the time with their exceptional work ‘Life. Love. Regret.’ and still regularly rotates on my turntable – especially in difficult times, this disc made me hold my head high! This album should be celebrated tonight for its 30th anniversary! But what awaited me then far exceeded anything I had imagined! I have rarely experienced such a powerful, emotional, intense concert! Fuck Bruges… See Unbroken and die!

BIOHAZARD

So flashed by Unbroken, the last band of the evening actually had a hard time getting me out of this trance. Biohazard in their original line-up at Revolution Calling. Since no other band was playing, the Main Hall was accordingly full and I could only fight my way up to the balcony to see the concert! – But my colleague Treasureman was there in time to secure a place at the edge of the stage. – How many times have I seen Biohazard, especially in the early years. And the guys haven’t lost a bit of their charisma. Billy is still as agile on stage as ever – you just can’t kill the bloke! Just pure joy of playing, which he still radiates. What can I say: Biohazard from Brooklyn New York! – IN YOUR FACE!

And so a really great event came to an end! Eindhoven was calling, and everyone came to reduce the Klokgebouw to rubble. The 100% accessibility alone, no photo pits, made this event an experience. At no time was there any fear of contact between the audience and the bands. Every hardcore fan was welcome on the stage to shout along or stage dive. Just like in the old days! The billing was undeniably phenomenal and I don’t think I need to repeat who all took to the stage in Eindhoven that day!

Kudos to the organisers for attracting all these bands. The complete organisation and atmosphere were impressive! And we are already looking forward to a hopeful reunion next year!

EU 2025), Killing Time, Sorcerer, Ringworm, Whispers and of course No Turning Back as every year. – And as rumour has it: in all probability Slapshot with their last appearance in Europe!
