Der Bandname CHOPPED IN HALF (Facebook) lässt schon so einiges vermuten, was man musikalisch erwarten darf. Fröhliche Partysmasher sind es jedenfalls nicht. Vielmehr geht es in die dunkelsten Abgründe der menschlichen Existenz. „Chopped In Half“ war übrigens ein Song der alten Haudegen OBITUARY, die wohl jedem bekannt sein dürften, die sich mit Death Metal beschäftigen. Als Ehrerbietung für diese Band findet sich dann zusätzlich sogar ein Song namens „Obituary“ auf dem Album.

Nachdem ich das Album „The End Of Human Tragedy“ von CHOPPED IN HALF zum ersten Mal gehört habe, war ich sehr angetan von dem old school Sound, der hier ohne Schnickschnack auskommt und klassischen Death Metal ganz ohne cleane Vocals brettert. Mit dem Fokus auf das Wesentliche braut sich eine unheimlich packende Atmosphäre zusammen. In Zeiten vieler Soundkreationen im Bereich Metal, die verschiedene Genres in sich vereinen, was auch zu vielen tollen Ergebnissen führt, ist es dann doch auch mal erfrischend, wenn Bands in „alter“ Machart Songs raushauen.

Es beginnt mit einer kleinen instrumentalen Einleitung, die so ein wenig gruselige Horrorstimmung aufbaut, aber jetzt auch nicht sonderlich spektakulär daherkommt. Ein paar Synthies und Geräuscheffekte, mehr gibt es nicht. Da hätte ich mir schon auch düstere Riffs, eine schwere Basslinie und/oder schleppende Drums gut vorstellen können, die den Spannungsbogen stärker hätten spannen können, bevor es dann mit „House Of Pain“ richtig losgeht. Und mit „House Of Pain“ machen CHOPPED IN HALF alles richtig, denn dieser Song ist ein fieses Monster, das mit aller Kraft hervorkommt und euch in die Hölle zieht.

„IH8UALL“ könnte als Message kaum klarer sein. Der Song benötigt allerdings ein wenig, um in die Gänge zu kommen, da er mit einem Intro eingeleitet wird, was mir ein wenig zu lange dauert. Aber darüber sehe ich dann hinweg, wenn der Song schließlich die Tore zur Hölle pulverisiert und die Todeswalze erbarmungslos losrollt. Ein treibender Song mit einer abgrundtiefen Bösartigkeit, die dich packt und gnadenlos durchschüttelt. Ein Song mit unaufhaltsamen Zerstörungspotential, der Nacken brechen lässt.

Sehr gelungen finde ich den Mix zwischen langsamen Passagen, die sich zerstörerisch wie zähfließende Lava einen Weg durch das Gehör bahnen, den hämmernden Passagen, welche erbarmungslos auf deinen Körper einschlagen bis hin zu den treibenden groovigen Ausschweifungen, die dich voranpeitschen oder einfach zermalmen.

Sogar in Instrumentaltrack mit dem passenden Titel „No More Words“ weiß sich auf dem Album zu behaupten und bietet mit seiner melodischeren Ausrichtung eine willkommene Abwechslung. Ansonsten bleiben CHOPPED IN HALF ihrem Stil treu und bewegen sich im gleichen Fahrwasser. Wie sagt man so schön: Alles wirkt aus einem Guß! So bleibt die Atmosphäre stimmig. Große Experimente würden hierbei nur schaden. Vielleicht hätte man aber trotzdem einige Akzente noch mehr herausarbeiten können.

Da fällt mir der letzte Song „Morbid“ ein, der mit über sechs Minuten die längste Spielzeit aufweist. Nimmt man den vorgelagerten Track „Fall Of The Last Civilization“ mit seinem dystopischen Pianospiel als Intro noch dazu, hat man einen Monstersong am Ende, wo einige Dinge eingebaut werden, welche durchaus hervorstechen und dem Sound auch gut zu Gesicht stehen. Dazu zähle ich auch den Gesangspart ab Minute 04:25, wo mal in höheren fiesen Tonlagen „gekeift“ wird und einen tollen Kontrast zu den ansonsten finsteren Growls darstellen. Damit könnte man bestimmt noch mehr anstellen.

Fazit

CHOPPED IN HALF beweisen mit „The End Of Human Tragedy“, dass auch old school Death Metal weiterhin für Begeisterung sorgen kann. Mit der Besinnung auf das Wesentliche gelingt es CHOPPED IN HALF eine bedrohliche von Verdammnis geprägte Atmosphäre zu erschaffen, die intensiv spürbar ist.

The band name CHOPPED IN HALF (Facebook)already gives you an idea of what you can expect musically. They are certainly not cute cuddly bunnies. Instead, they delve into the darkest abysses of human existence. Incidentally, „Chopped In Half“ was a song by the old legend band OBITUARY, who are probably known to everyone who is into death metal. As a tribute to this band, there is even a song called „Obituary“ on the album.

After listening to the album „The End Of Human Tragedy“ by CHOPPED IN HALF for the first time, I was very impressed by the old school sound, which gets by without any frills. They blast out classic death metal without any clean vocals. The focus on the essentials creates an incredibly gripping atmosphere. In times of many sound creations in the field of metal that combine different genres, which also leads to many great results, it is refreshing when bands come up with songs in the good „old“ style.

It begins with a short instrumental introduction that builds up a somewhat creepy horror atmosphere, but doesn’t come across spectacular. A few synths and sound effects, that’s all there is. I could have imagined darker riffs, a heavy bass line and/or sluggish drums that would have increased the tension before „House Of Pain“ really gets going and beats the shit out of you. CHOPPED IN HALF do everything right, because this song is a nasty monster that comes out with all its might and drags you into hell.

The message of „IH8UALL“ could hardly be clearer. However, the song takes a little while to get going, as it is introduced with an intro, which takes a little too long for me. But I can get over it when the song finally pulverizes the gates to hell and the death train rolls mercilessly. A driving song with an abysmal evilness that grabs you and shakes you mercilessly. A song with unstoppable destructive potential that breaks necks.

I like the mix between slow passages, which destructively make their way through your ears like viscous lava, the hammering passages, which mercilessly beat your body, and the driving groovy excesses, which whip you forward or simply crush you.

Even the instrumental track with the fitting title „No More Words“ knows how to assert itself on the album and offers a welcome change with its more melodic orientation. Otherwise, CHOPPED IN HALF remain true to their style and move in the same waters. This keeps the atmosphere coherent. Big experiments would only do harm. But perhaps some accents could have been worked out even more.

The last song „Morbid“ comes to mind, which has the longest playing time at over six minutes. If you add the preceding track „Fall Of The Last Civilization“ with its dystopian piano playing as an intro, you have a monster song at the end, where some things are incorporated that really stand out and also suit the sound well. I also mention the vocal part from minute 04:25 onwards, where the vocals are „nagged“ in higher, nasty pitches and provide a great contrast to the otherwise dark growls. You could definitely do more with that.

Conclusion

With „The End Of Human Tragedy“, CHOPPED IN HALF prove that old school death metal can still generate great entertainment. By concentrating on the essentials, CHOPPED IN HALF succeed in creating a menacing atmosphere characterized by damnation that can be felt intensely.
