Unglaublich starker Song!
Der Kontrast kommt danach in Form von „We Are The North“. Tja, was soll man sagen….
Wow! Was ist denn hier los?

You can always rely on EVERGREY (Facebook/Homepage). For no less than three decades, the Swedes have regularly delivered new material and have long been a constant in the scene. The five-piece band around founder, singer and guitarist Tom S. Englund will release their fourteenth studio album next Friday on June 7th, 2024. It seems as if the creative cornucopia just never runs dry and EVERGREY keep pouring out new great compositions. Tom Englund says on the subject:
The most important thing for us is to continue to develop. We don’t want our music to stagnate, we want it to stay innovative. With every album we strive for something new – a unique nuance, a new sound, a fresh approach to songwriting or innovative production techniques.

And that is exactly why EVERGREY have managed to create wonderful music over the course of their career, with magnificent melodies that often have a melancholy undertone. The music conveys an impressive sublimity. Epic worlds are created in which you can immerse yourself deeply. This is ensured by the songs, which are arranged with great feeling and, in addition to their primarily melodic magnificence, also come across as powerful and even very heavy.
The opener „Falling From The Sun“ gets to the heart of this musical world impressively.
An EVERGREY universe
full of musical galaxies open up to the listener. Despite its short playing time by EVERGREY standards, the following song „Misfortune“ is a great anthem with a colossal performance. „Become Someone Else“ continues the series of high-class songs. At the beginning, Tom’s vocals dominate, whereby his singing is discreetly accompanied by a dark aura in the instrumental background. But suddenly the massive riffs break through and give the song a shattering vehemence. The song has a more progressive structure again and reveals a spherical interlude with atmospheric synths, whereby these sounds are combined with striking riff-heavy elements as the song progresses. Incredibly strong song!
There are various emotional moments on the album, but „Ghost Of My Hero“ has an extra load of them. It is a dreamlike ballad. You are embraced by paradisiacal, warm melodies and eerily soulful vocals. It melts every block of ice in record time. Very moving!
Compared to other songs on the album, „Say“ doesn’t come across as gloomy and is full of lively power, which also manifests itself in a cracking solo. The keys give the song an atmospheric kick.
A real live firecracker
The contrast then comes in the form of „We Are The North“. Another dark, massive wall of sound that builds up. Well, what can you say…. One anthem after another is revealed! The pithy, brisk „One Heart“ immediately fights its way into your heart. You want to jump into the haunting chorus and sing along at the top of your voice as soon as you hear it. This should be an absolute smash hit live. The song is literally made to be performed with a huge audience. I get goosebumps just imagining it.
After this smash hit, „The Night Within“ doesn’t quite pick me up as much in direct comparison, although it has an interesting charm due to the synths and delivers a strong guitar solo on top. But „Cold Dreams“ immediately makes up for that. Wow! What’s going on here? The progressive song has the most blatant and aggressive moments on this musical journey, thanks to guest vocalist Jonas Renske. Although they don’t last that long, they seem all the more violent because you don’t expect them at all, as the song begins rather harmlessly, with a thoughtful melancholy. But from minute 02:20, all hell breaks loose.
Who would have thought that EVERGREY could sound so hard and dark. Admittedly, it’s due to my personal taste that I could imagine hearing more passages like this in EVERGREY. But other fans might see it differently. For Tom, this song was a special experience, as he explains in his commentary here:
„Cold Dreams“ is probably the darkest piece of music on Theories of Emptiness. Its somber power is quite overwhelming. It’s a composition that honestly leaves me feeling a bit uneasy. To have Jonas Renkse of Katatonia singing words describing fates that we both encountered makes it even more special and intriguing. Jonas’ unique voice of sadness spreads like a disease and to hear him growl, again, is just fucking great! To balance the darkness, we decided to bring in some angelic qualities, and at the time of composing, I couldn’t imagine anything more suiting than my daughter Salina Englund’s voice.

Conclusion
EVERGREY are not satisfied with having climbed a peak and resting there. With her unwavering ambition and her love for music, they are constantly striving for more. They want to scale higher and different peaks in order to broaden their view of things and gain a different perspective. Even after three decades, they still manage to create new shining stars and beautiful galaxies in their musical universe. They have more than succeeded in doing this with „Theories Of Emptiness“. They can reflect on their grandiose monument „Theories Of Emptiness“ with great pride and joy. If you don’t want to miss out on a fascinating journey, you should immerse yourself in the EVERGREY universe.
