NYKTOPHOBIA – „To The Stars“ Review

NYKTOPHOBIA (Facebook) stammen aus Deutschland und haben bereits drei Longplayer veröffentlicht, die da wären: „Fallen Empire“ (2017), „Fate Of Atlantis“ (2018) und „What Lasts Forever“ (2020). Die Alben bisher waren schon immer von guter Qualität und hohem Unterhaltungswert, jedoch war mir das Konzept im gesamten Kontext etwas zu gleichförmig und die Entwicklung zu wenig innovativ. Man hat sich nun etwas mehr Zeit gelassen, um am 05. Juli das neue Album „To The Stars“ zu präsentieren. Daher war ich gespannt, was mich nun erwarten würde. Aber zunächst einmal zum Cover-Artwork.

Das Cover Artwork sieht jedenfalls gigantisch aus. Und wenn man sich die Vinyl-Ausgaben und das Booklet anschaut, dann muss man sagen, dass die optische Aufmachung absolut erstklassig ist. Bei den Vinyls gibt es limitierte Ausgaben von Pictured-Discs und verschiedenen Marbled-Editions und sogar eine transparente mit Sand gefüllte Vinyl (für 99,99 €). So etwas habe ich noch nie gesehen. Aber darüber braucht ihr euch keine Gedanken machen, denn kurz vor Fertigstellung dieses Reviews war das Ding bei einer Auflage von 33 Stück bei Bandcamp trotz des stolzen Preises von 99,99 € schon vor Veröffentlichung des Albums ausverkauft. Aber es gibt noch alle anderen hübschen Exemplare, für die man erheblich weniger Euro über die Theke wandern lassen muss. Und diese sehen wirklich auch klasse aus!

Neue Welten

Auf dem neuen Album gibt es weiterhin klassischen Melodic Death Metal. Jedoch ist gerade die Single „Voyager 1“ etwas anders und hat man so von NYKTOPHOBIA noch nicht gehört. Der Finaltrack war mein erster Eindruck von dem neuen Songmaterial und was ich hörte, fand ich phänomenal. Es brachte mich direkt dazu diesen Song mehrmals hintereinander zu hören.. Mit sieben Minuten Spielzeit ist es der mit Abstand längste Track auf dem Album. Damit betreten NYKTOPHOBIA Neuland, denn so einen epischen Song gab es bisher in dieser Form noch nicht. Bisher war das Material eher geprägt von schnellen prügelnden Songs. „Voyager 1“ geht einen anderen Weg, und das in verschiedener Hinsicht. Es ist ein langsamer, von einer intensiven melancholischen Atmosphäre getragener Song, bei dem auch prägnante Synthies eine tragende Rolle Spielen. Auch wenn man das von NYKTOPHOBIA nicht gewohnt ist, so gefällt mir diese neue Facette außerordentlich gut und für mich ist dieser Song ein Überraschungshit und mein absoluter Liebling auf dem Album. Ich liebe diesen Song!

Mehr Epik

NYKTOPHOBIA sind ihrem Sound jedoch grundsätzlich treu geblieben, aber er hat sich weiter entwickelt. Und er hat sich glücklicherweise mehr entwickelt als bei den ersten drei Alben, die in relativ kurzen Abständen erschienen sind. Was hat sich geändert? Nun, zum einen drückt man trotz aller Vehemenz nicht so häufig nur aufs Tempo, auch wenn Blastbeats bzw. furioses Drumming nach wie vor ein wichtiger Bestandteil sind. Aber man gibt den Songs auch Luft zum atmen, so dass sie sich entfalten können. Man muss sagen, dass die neuen Songs im allgemeinen mehr atmosphärische Tiefe besitzen. Dabei funktioniert das Konzept mit den zwei männlichen Sängern weiterhin hervorragend. Dunkle Growls und fiese Screams liefern sich hier ein kämpferisches Duell oder ein harmonisches Duett, je nachdem, wie man es sehen will.

Allerdings bleibt der Einsatz von Synthies eine Seltenheit auf dem Album. Ich persönlich finde das etwas schade, weil mir dieser Ansatz gut gefällt. Hätte mir gut mehr Songs vorstellen können, die einen mutigeren und progressiveren Ansatz geboten hätten. Ich denke, dass da bei der Band in der Richtung durchaus viel Potential vorhanden ist. Andere Fans, die mehr die rein klassische Herangehensweise bevorzugen, werden das allerdings sicherlich anders sehen. Ist wie immer eine Geschmacksfrage…

Doch ich finde auch gerade die schöne Einleitung beim Song „Progenitor“ sehr ansprechend, auch wenn der Song anschließend in die Vollen geht. Und so muss man sich keine Sorgen machen, denn es gibt sie natürlich noch, die nackenbrechenden Phasen, die brachial voranstürmen. „Millenium“ ist relativ einfach gestrickt, aber wie alles andere auch wunderbar umgesetzt, so dass sich der Song sehr schnell im Kopf festsetzt. Es werden krasse Kontraste geboten, die wirklich klasse funktionieren. Und das funktioniert nicht nur bei diesem Song, sondern auf dem gesamten Album. Das Konzept mag insgesamt, bis auf den letzten Track, nicht viel Variationen und Überraschungen bieten, aber es ist in sich stimmig und ausgezeichnet umgesetzt.

Fazit

NYKTOPHOBIA ist mit „To The Stars“ ein sehr starkes Album gelungen. Dabei sind sie die richtigen und wichtigen Schritte gegangen, haben ihren Sound weiterentwickelt ohne ihre Wurzeln zu vergessen. Der Sound vereint viele epische Melodien mit brutaler Härte, wobei die Mischung durchweg einen sehr guten Eindruck macht. Dabei können die Songs mit mehr Atmosphäre aufwarten als bisher. Jedoch hätte ich mir noch ein wenig mehr Raffinesse bei der individuellen Gestaltung der Songs gewünscht. Hier sei noch einmal der Finaltrack „Voyager 1“ genannt, der für mich die Überraschungshit des Albums ist und etwas von den Möglichkeiten bzw. dem Potential erahnen lässt, wohin die Reise in Zukunft noch gehen könnte. Ich wäre bereit dafür! So vergebe ich insgesamt fette 8 Punkte (die schon heftig an der 9 Punkte Zone kratzen).

The albums so far have always been of good quality and high entertainment, but the concept was a little too uniform in the overall context and the development was not innovative enough. They have now taken a little more time to present the new album „To The Stars“ on 5 July. So I was curious to find out what to expect. But first of all, I want to say something about the cover artwork.

The cover artwork certainly looks gigantic. And if you look at the vinyl editions and the booklet, you have to say that the visual presentation is absolutely first class. The vinyls include limited editions of pictured discs and various marbled editions and even a transparent vinyl filled with sand (for €99.99). I’ve never seen anything like it. But you don’t need to worry about that, because shortly before this review was finalised, the thing was sold out of 33 copies on Bandcamp before the album was even released, despite the hefty price tag of €99.99. But there are still all the other pretty copies available, for which you have to fork over considerably fewer euros. And they look really great too!

New worlds

The new album still features classic melodic death metal. However, the single „Voyager 1“ in particular is something different and has never been heard before from NYKTOPHOBIA. The final track was my first impression of the new song material and what I heard was phenomenal. It made me want to listen to this song several times in a row. With a playing time of seven minutes, it is by far the longest track on the album. NYKTOPHOBIA are breaking new ground with this, as there has never been such an epic song in this way before. So in the past, the material was more characterised by fast, thrashing songs. „Voyager 1“ takes a different path, and in several ways. It is a slow song with an intense melancholic atmosphere, in which concise synths also play an important role. Even if you’re not used to this from NYKTOPHOBIA, I really like this new facet and for me this song is a surprise hit and my absolute favourite on the album. I love this song so much!

More epics

NYKTOPHOBIA have remained fundamentally true to their sound, but it has evolved. And fortunately it has developed more than the first three albums, which were released at relatively short intervals. What has changed? Well, for one thing, despite all the vehemence, they don’t just push the tempo so often, even if blast beats and furious drumming are still an important component. But the songs are also given room to breathe so that they can unfold. It has to be said that the new songs generally have more atmospheric depth. The concept with the two male vocalists continues to work excellently. Dark growls and nasty screams engage in a combative duel or a harmonious duet, depending on how you want to see it.

However, the use of synths remains a rarity on the album. Personally, I would have liked more of them. I could have imagined more songs that would have offered a bolder and more progressive approach. I think the band has a lot of potential in that direction. Other fans who are more fond of the pure classic approach will certainly see it differently. As always, it’s a question of taste…

But I also find the beautiful introduction to the song „Progenitor“ very appealing, even if the song then goes into full attack. And so you don’t have to worry, because of course they still exist, the neck-breaking phases that rush forward with brute force. „Millenium“ is relatively simple, but like everything else it is wonderfully played, so that the song gets stuck in your head very quickly. It offers stark contrasts that work really well. And this works not only for this song, but for the whole album. The overall concept may not offer many variations or surprises, apart from the last track, but it is coherent and excellently realised.

Conclusion

NYKTOPHOBIA have produced a very strong album with „To The Stars“. They have taken the right and important steps and developed their sound further without forgetting their roots. The sound combines many epic melodies with brutal heaviness, and the mixture makes a very good impression throughout. The songs have more atmosphere than before. However, I would have liked a little more sophistication in the individualisation of the songs. The final track „Voyager 1“ should be mentioned here once again, which for me is the surprise hit of the album and gives a hint of the possibilities and potential of where the journey could take us in the future. I would be ready for that! So I award a total of 8 points (scratching hard to the 9-point section).
