STEPFATHER FRED (Facebook) sind nach ihrem letzten Kracheralbum „Like The Sea“ (Review) wieder da mit ihrem neuen Album „Rubicon“. Von STEPFATHER FRED kann man eigentlich alles erwarten. Grundsätzlich ist der Sound roh und dreckig mit einer gehörigen Portion Härte, die manchmal die Grenze zum Metal verschwimmen lässt. Es gibt also gehörig was vor den Latz geballert. Doch auch gefühlvolle Momente sind der Band nicht fremd. Mit dieser spannenden Mischung im Gepäck geht die Reise nun weiter mit

„RUBICON“

Das Album trumpft mit satten 12 Songs auf und der Opener „Move Your Limit“ verteilt schon direk zu Beginn kräftige Arschtritte. Den typischen STEPFATHER FRED Sound erkennt man sofort. Was mir ebenfalls auffällt, ist die meines Erachtens bessere Produktion, die etwas „sauberer“ auftritt ohne glattpoliert zu klingen. Ein markantes Merkmal im Sound ist sicherlich Frontmann Basti mit seiner unglaublichen Stimme, die er meisterlich beherrscht. Er kann zuschlagen wie ein Monsterhammer, aber auch unheimlich viel Gefühl zeigen und erreicht dabei klare Töne in höheren Bereichen.

Das ist echt krass und einen Vorgeschmack bekommt man beim zweiten Song „Collecting Faith“. Der Wechsel zwischen den leichten beschwingten Strophen mit dem druckvollen harten Refrain ist fantastisch gelungen. Beachtlich wie unterschiedlich auch die Gitarren den Song begleiten. Von einer gewissen beschwingten Leichtigkeit mit melodischen Flügeln wechselt man geschickt in einen druckvollen harten Refrain, der quasi wie ein Vulkan ausbricht. Genial!

STEPFATHER FRED stehen auch für Kreativität!

Sie können straight hart geradeaus rocken wie beispielsweise beim Brecher, aber es fließen auch kreative Ideen in den Sound ein, der dadurch manchmal für coole Überraschungen sorgt. So fließen auch gerne mal ruhigere Momente ein, die den Sound auflockern. Und wenn es etwas mehr von den ruhigen Momenten gibt, dann kommt eine echt coole Power Ballade wie „Spiral“ dabei heraus. Sie beginnt super lässig, entwickelt dann aber doch einen ordentlichen Druck und kommt mit viel Schmackes daher. „Abacus“ geht in eine ähnliche Richtung und dieser Song wurde noch mit einem schönen Video bedacht, dass sicherlich eine ungewöhnliche Richtung einschlägt. Mal was anderes! Prädikat: Künstlerisch wertvoll!

Kontrastreiche Vibes

bekommt man mit „Fail“ geboten, der zwischen viel melodischem Gefühl und brutalen Ausbrüchen hin- und herspringt. Das ist auch Teil des besonderen Flairs bei STEPFATHER FRED, der sie ausmacht und den sie perfekt beherrschen. Eine Spur extravagant wird es dann beim Song „Ghost Of Time“. Das merkt man schon bei dem gesanglich ungewöhnlichen Einstieg in den Song. Recht schnell kommt die rockige Note zum Vorschein und der Song zeigt seine raue Schale, wobei er mit einem tollen eingängigen Refrain glänzen kann.

Und dann kommt einer dieser Überraschungsmomente, mit dem man nicht rechnet. Der Part mit dem Gitarrensolo greift das gesangliche Thema vom Beginn auf, während die Gitarre zunächst wunderbar melodisch harmonische Vibes produziert, bis sie dann plötzlich auf Vollgas schaltet. Noch ne Spur abgedrehter geht es beim Song „sVenorita“ zu. Man spürt zwar schon zu Beginn einen leichten spanischen Folkflair in diesem knusprigen Rocksong, aber diese Andeutung ist nur ein Vorbote dessen, was man später noch zu hören bekommt. Denn dort wird das Thema noch einmal exzessiver ausgespielt.

Ich liebe solche Dinge. Aber ich liebe auch Songs, die einfach ihren Stiefel abrocken ohne abzuschweifen. Und auch davon haben STEPFATHER FRED was zu bieten, wie z.B. „Tripped My Demon“. Ja, das hat Groove, das hat Schliff! Ein gnadenloser Nackenbrecher!

Fazit

STEPFATHER FRED haben es einfach drauf. Ich liebe ihre musikalische Interpretation, die einen ganz eigenen Charakter hat und einen sehr hohen Wiedererkennungswert besitzt. Schmutzig harter Rock, der auch mal mit dem Metal liebäugelt und sich auch mit gefühlvollen Passagen versteht ohne „weich“ zu klingen. Auf ihrem neuen Album „Rubicon“ nutzen sie gekonnt all ihre Stärken und hauen wieder einmal astreine Kracher raus, die mal mit kreativen Ideen begeistern, aber auch mal einfach geradeaus rocken. So wird das Album „Rubicon“ zu einem fulminanten Rockevent mit einem durchweg guten Punch.

STEPFATHER FRED (Facebook) are back with their new album „Rubicon“ after their last cracking album „Like The Sea“ (Review) . You can actually expect anything from STEPFATHER FRED. Basically, the sound is raw and dirty with a good dose of heaviness that sometimes blurs the line to metal. So there’s a lot of banging in action. But the band are no strangers to emotional moments either. With this exciting mixture the journey now continues with

„RUBICON“

The album boasts a whopping 12 songs and the opener „Move Your Limit“ kicks ass right from the start. The typical STEPFATHER FRED sound is instantly recognisable. What I also notice is the better production in my opinion, which is a bit „cleaner“ without sounding polished. A striking feature of the sound is certainly frontman Basti with his incredible voice, which he has mastered to perfection. He can hit like a big steel hammer, but also show an incredible amount of feeling and achieve clear tones in the higher ranges.

That’s really cool and you get a taste of it in the second song „Collecting Faith“. The alternation between the light, melodious verses and the powerful, hard chorus is fantastically successful. It’s remarkable how differently the guitars accompany the song. They skilfully switch from a certain lightness with melodic wings to a powerful, hard chorus that erupts like a volcano. Ingenious!

STEPFATHER FRED also stand for creativity!

They can rock straight ahead, but creative ideas also flow into the sound, which sometimes provides cool surprises. They also like to incorporate quieter moments that loosen up the sound. And when there are more of the quiet moments, the result is a really cool power ballad like „Spiral“. It starts off super laid-back, but then develops a decent amount of pressure and comes along with a lot of grit. „Abacus“ goes in a similar direction and this song was also given a nice video, which certainly takes an unusual direction. Something different! Rating: Artistically valuable!

Contrasting vibes

is offered with „Fail“, which jumps back and forth between a lot of melodic feeling and brutal outbursts. This is also part of the special flair that characterises STEPFATHER FRED and which they have mastered perfectly. Things get a little extravagant with the song „Ghost Of Time“. You can tell from the unusual vocal introduction to the song. The rocky note quickly comes to the fore and the song shows its rough shell, whereby it can shine with a great catchy chorus.

And then comes one of those surprise moments that you don’t expect. The part with the guitar solo picks up on the vocal theme from the beginning, while the guitar initially produces wonderfully melodic, harmonious vibes until it suddenly switches to full throttle. The song „sVenorita“ is a bit more wacky. You can sense a slight Spanish folk flair in this crunchy rock song right from the start, but this hint is just a harbinger of what you will hear later. Because there the theme is played out even more excessively.

I love things like that. But I also love songs that just rock their boots off without digressing. And STEPFATHER FRED have some of that to offer, such as „Tripped My Demon“. Yes, it’s got groove, it’s got edge! A merciless neckbreaker!

Conclusion

STEPFATHER FRED simply have what it takes. I love their musical interpretation, which has its very own character and is highly recognisable. Dirty hard rock that sometimes flirts with metal and also knows how to play soulful passages without sounding „soft“. On their new album „Rubicon“, they skilfully use all of their strengths to produce once again real smash hits, which inspire with creative ideas, but also simply rock straight ahead. This makes the album „Rubicon“ a brilliant rock event with a consistently good punch.
